[person gasps]
Damn.
[exhales]
[clattering, hammering]
Grandpa, what are you doing?
Grandpa.
[banging, clattering on roof]
[teenager on phone]
He doesn't even see me.
[Mom on phone] Wait. What is he doing?
[teenager]
I don't know. He's just on the roof.
[Mom sighs] I told him to wait for you.
Tell him to get down.
Mom says that you have to get down.
[Mom] You need to yell.
Don't be scared.
Okay.
Grandpa, Mom says
that you're not allowed on the roof!
[sighs] Look what you... [sighs]
Why are you yelling?
'Cause she said you can't get on the roof!
Well, apparently, I can.
It's too dangerous.
If I fall, I fall.
- [Mom on phone] Why didn't he pick you up?
- What?
[Mom sighs]
He was supposed to pick you up.
You were supposed to pick me up.
Supposed to, tomorrow on Friday.
It is Friday.
Well, it rained.
I'll call you back.
[Grandpa grunts]
Your phone was disconnected.
Yeah, I know.
Why?
Uh, kept ringing.
Hey, this is why she sent you up here.
- Some gas will take that right off.
- No. No.
Well, why are you here then?
I don't know.
Don't you need help or something?
[Grandpa scoffs]
Yeah, you can, uh, sleep in here.
[Grandpa groans]
Where?
[chuckles] Anywhere.
Now, there's some stuff out in the garden
needs doing. Okay?
[door closes]
[door opens]
I said I'm going out to the garden.
I heard you.
[footsteps depart]
[door closes]
[metallic jingling]
[jingling continues]
[tearing, jingling]
Dinner.
That looks like an onion.
It's not as sweet.
Is that a Cheyenne food?
It's Cheyenne food if I'm eating it.
[crunches]
[snickers] Um, how's school?
School's school.
Not what I asked you.
It's great. So much fun.
Liar.
Why does it matter?
I'm not going back anyways.
Okay.
I mean, you don't have to like it,
you know?
What did Mom tell you?
To ask.
Mom said that you ran away
from boarding school.
And you never talk about it.
[teenager] Ugh, cord.
[Mom on phone] Are you doing okay?
[teenager on phone]
Why'd you send me here?
[Mom] Did Grandpa talk to you?
[teenager] I don't think he wants to.
[Mom sighs] He doesn't like talking
to anyone. Just give him a chance.
When can I come home?
[Mom] Soon, I hope.
Just don't let him on the roof again.
[clattering]
I gotta go.
[door creaks]
Can I help?
[sighs] Apparently not.
[wind chimes ding]
[water drips]
[water drips]
[footsteps depart]
[door closes]
[breathes deeply]
[wind chime dinging]
Fine.
[footsteps approach]
I built a fire.
Bring the dress.
[dress jingling]
[chuckles] Your ke'eehe, your grandma,
wore that jingle dress.
I'm sorry. I didn't...
[Grandpa] Until she was your age.
I remember when you were little,
you always loved to wear it.
[Grandpa chuckles]
Go ahead. Sit down.
Ke'eehe was hetanmn'e.
I don't know that word.
It means she was two-spirit. Like
Like me?
Meeting Ke'eehe was the only good thing
that happened at that boarding school.
They tried to erase us. [chuckles]
Especially things
they didn't know anything about.
Probably a lot, uh,
like the kids at your school.
Hmm.
I wish you could have met her.
I see her in you.
Does that mean... Were you two
Sometimes it's easier to accept
than explain.
Then again, I guess love is like that.
[chuckles]
Ke'eehe did a lot that was hard to explain
to some people.
Built that roof.
[Grandpa chuckles]
[banging on roof]
[metal scraping on roof]
[drill whirs]
Hey! Get down from there! It's dangerous!
If I fall, I fall.
I'm gonna fix it.
Just tell me what to do, and I'll do it.
[Grandpa] Let me get a better look!
[teenager] Mom said you're not allowed
to come up here.
[Grandpa] Well, then she should stop me.
Hmm. Over here.
You forgot to fix this part.
Hold it down tight, so I can screw it in.
[drilling]
[teenager] You think it'll hold?
[Grandpa] Oh, it'll hold, yeah.
[teenager] I have an idea,
just in case it doesn't.
What size are you?
[crowd chattering]
[teenager] Grandpa, what's going on?
I didn't know there was a powwow.
[Grandpa] I made some calls.
[Mom] Oh, your phone's working now.
- Mom!
- [Mom chuckles]
[whispering] Thank you.
Did you bring it?
[wind chime dinging]
[dress jingling]
[jingling continues]
You ready?
I am so proud of you.
[sighs] I... I... I just
[drumming]
[sighs]
[Cheyenne singing, drumming]
[Cheyenne singing, drumming continues]
[singing, drumming stops]
Hey! [chuckles]
