They said winter brought
silence, but last year,
(stinging music) winter brought him.
A young girl from our village
swore she saw something in the woods,
uh, uh, taller than a man,
skin cracked like ice,
eyes burning blue.
(wretched music continues)
Children imagine things.
Then one night, during the
heaviest snowfall we'd ever seen,
she wandered into the
forest to prove it was real.
The storm swallowed her tracks.
The searchers found nothing:
No footprints, no body,
just the endless white.
Days later, she returned.
She stood at the edge of town,
barefoot in the snow,
unharmed, smiling too wide.
Her hair had turned pale as frost;
Her eyes, wrong, empty, cold.
She told us she had met the Snow Demon.
Said it lives beneath the drifts,
waiting for winter to form,
waiting for the lost.
And when she finished
her story, she whispered,
"He's coming again."
Then she vanished into the storm.
And every winter since,
after the first snowfall,
children disappear.

[Rhea] Looks smaller than I remember.
Everything does when
you go back, doesn't it?
You all right?
[Harper] Mm, f;Ine.
(bird trills)
(chuckles) Bit creepy, that.
Oi. You don't have to
be the strong one this time.
Doesn't really feel like
there's any other choice.
We're doing the right thing, coming back.
Hmm. Are we?
Lila. She would've wanted this.
(stinging music continues)
(stinging music fades out)
(door clunks)
(shoe clops)
God, it's colder in
here than it is outside.
(Rhea huffs)
The last time we were here...
(huffs) Maybe, um, we
should get a fire going.
And then what?
And then we remember her.
Little help getting the bags.
(door clacks)
It doesn't feel like a year.
It is.
This is about Lila's wishes, this weekend,
rather than us.
Yeah, of course. It's just... (huffs)
I know, but that's why
we're here, together.
Yeah.
(dispirited music) (Rhea huffs)
You all right?
Yeah, fine.
(torch clatters)
(Rowan sighs)
Argh. Right.
(haunting music fades in)
(haunting music fades out)
(door clacks) (shoes clop)
Lila would say we look
like a crap support group.
And then make us tea.
And then make us play
stupid drinking games.
That's hint to get the kettle on.
[Rowan] Yep. On it. (Huffs)
'Kay, 'kay, we settle in.
And then tonight, we'll...
We'll light the candles.
Say what we need to say.

notes: Owen McLennan.
Winter's Hollow. Day three on site.
(Owen breathes)
Locals won't talk,
not really, not directly,
but the name keeps
coming up, in the old stories:
Ankuron Geal, the White Devourer.
Uh, guardian? Punisher?
Depends which version you read.
But something. There's
something going on up here.
I don't care what people are saying.
Over the course of nearly 100 years:
17 confirmed deaths,
18 people missing
until the most recent one,
the girl that went missing last year.
(bird chirps)
It's like there's a veil of
silence around this place.
Locals won't venture up here,
and all the people that
go missing, that disappear,
they're all lonely.
(Owen sighs)
You know, they talk about myth,
but myth and story has a basis,
a foothold in reality,
(tuts) in our reality.
So the question is what.
What goes on? Accidents?
(uneasy music)
Something else.
(wind murmurs)
(tuts) Okay, Owen, it's time,
(uneasy music swells)
Time to prove some of
these theories correct.
(yearnful music) (bird squeaks)
(leaves rustle) (birds twitter)
(bird cuckoos)
(shoe taps)
How are we doing?
"We"? Fine, never better.
You can talk to me, Jade.
Oh, I know.
Then talk.
About what? How you all
strong-armed me into this trip?
Jade.
[Jade] What?
We light the candles and
Yeah, I know, okay? Then
she finds her way home.
What is it?
(handle squeaks)
(latch clunks)
(insidious music)
(bird twitters)
(bird chirps)
(door clacks)
They never recovered it.
Her body.
This feels wrong,
like she's still out there.
I thought Lila was the spiritual one.
[Jade] Or serious.
You're right.
Her body wasn't recovered, but
some of her clothes were,
and you know what they said.
Yeah, I know.
She was in subzero temperature, okay?
She likely froze
- Shh, you shouldn't do this.
- To death, or animals got
to her.
I'm just...
I'm trying to make sense of it all.
Her parents declared her
dead. They've had her funeral.
With an empty coffin.
They've said goodbye.
Now it's our turn.
Yeah, all right.
(brooding music)
(brooding music fades out)
Are you going for a run?
Just don't go far off the trail.
It's me. I won't.
Don't look at me for help.
(Rhea huffs)
(intense music)
(bird whistles)
(bird chirps)
(latch rattles)
(bird chirps) (intense music continues)
(Jade sniffles)
(intense music continues)
Do you know how, do you
kn-kno-know how to play snap?
Yeah, I think I can manage that.
Okay, so... (laughs)
You don't know how to play snap?
- No.
- So, literally,
you just go like this
until you get, like, a matching number.
So if I got, like, five and five.
(card slaps)
[Rowan] Okay.
He's getting it now.
Snap.
You looked at that.
[Jade] You can't (indistinct).
Oh, I had
- my card's the other way!
- Outwards.
Sorry. That's on me, yeah, yeah.
All right, all right.
- Go on then.
- I'm still winning.
It's cool.
[Emma] Put a card down.
Ooh, go.
- Stop.
- Rowan.
- Snap!
- Snap! Aw.
(intense music)
(intense music continues)
(bird chirps)
(sheet metal clangs and echoes)
(stick snaps)
(Harper whispers indistinctly)
Excuse me. (Horrified music)
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry. I didn't mean to spook you.
[Harper] Jesus!
[Owen] You okay?
You can't just appear like that.
[Owen] I did call out.
You seem very distracted.
- Yeah.
- You okay?
Bit jumpy, I guess.
(chuckles) It's okay.
These woods are, uh...
They'll do that to ya. The
sound carries strangely out here.
Are you a hiker?
A hi-...
N-no, no. Uh, uh, uh, my name's Owen.
I'm, I'm a folklorist.
A folklorist.
Yeah, an expert in folklore and stuff.
Right. Right, yeah,
I, I know what that is.
Just, why are you out here?
A walk. Uh, I'm staying
out near the village.
Right.
I'm Harper.
Staying at the cabin. Bit further up.
We're just here for a weekend thing.
The one by the east ridge?
Yeah, that's the one.
Beautiful spot.
Yeah. Well, we're here for my friend.
She disappeared. While back.
Oh, yeah, I remember.
You do?
Yeah, the, uh, search
team combed the whole area
if I remember rightly.
(huffs) Yeah. They,
uh, they never found her.
(huffs) I mean, well, they think she...
It was her cabin.
Her parents want to sell it,
so we're up here to pay our respects.
Why are you here, again?
Research.
Related in a way to what
happened to your friend.
Wait. If you know something
No, no, I really don't know anything.
I'm, I'm here because I'm, I'm drawn
to folk stories and legends
that go on to the modern day.
Right. Like Bigfoot?
Yes! Yeah, exactly!
Yeah, so, so, the villagers around here,
they see hikers disappearing
all the time, okay?
Misadventure, accident, whatever;
However, a healthy contingent still believe
it might be the Winter Wolf.
The Winter Wolf.
Yeah, these woods,
they're meant to be
stalked by the Winter Wolf,
a, uh, a spirit demon.
A wolf.
A demon.
Look, I've been researching
this book for years:
Legends, myths, things that
stay alive to the modern world.
I have traveled the world.
(huffs) Doesn't really
look like you're, uh,
able to tackle a demon wolf.
Oh, (laughs) no. No, no, m-...
What I do is...
I'm just here to take photographs.
See, I would a come
up here last year, but...
My friend, she disappeared.
[Owen] Yeah.
(huffs) Don't tell me
you're here to tell me
that she was killed by a demon wolf.
No. No, no, no, no.
What happened to your friend
was probably a tragic accident;
However, they never found her body.
(uneasy music)
These woods, they tell
their own stories, you know?
Yeah, well, take it easy, okay?
You too.
(intense music)
(leaves rustle)
(debris rustles)
(Harper breathes)
Two queens.
(chuckles) Oi, guys, I was just scrolling
through photos of (inhales)
us lot and Lila last year.
Do you, do you remember
when she used to hide
the cards up her sleeve
to cheat in the game?
(Rowan laughs)
- Cheat?
I think that's just you, Rowan.
All right, cool.
There you are.
I thought you'd gone for miles.
Yeah. I just needed some air.
[Jade] Oh yeah, 'cause
nothing says relaxation
like running through
the freezing woods alone.
Everything okay?
Yeah, just lots and lots of trees.
Temperature's already dropped.
Right, we need something
warm, something comforting.
Why don't we make a
proper meal, like old times?
Fine, but if anyone
suggests bonding exercises,
I'm throwing myself into a snowdrift.
Well, I, I can chop things,
vegetables or whatever.
Like a proper man?
Well done, Rowan.
(packet crackles)
Okay, we have pasta,
(tins scrape) tinned tomatoes,
a questionable bag of herbs.
[Rowan] Mm-hmm.
Pasta it is?
I'll help.
Ah, look at us: Domestic.
Lila would've laughed herself sick.
She'd say we were doing it wrong.
She'd tell us to stop
being weird about it.
Yeah, she hated awkwardness.
Well, good news is there's
plenty of awkwardness here.
Let's just have a nice evening, 'kay?
(huffs) Yeah.
A nice evening sounds perfect.
Yeah, we can manage that.
(wretched music)
(cricket chirps)
(wolf howls)
See, what these
stories all have in common
is fear, (pants)
Mankind's innate fear,
fear of the unknown,
fear of the parts of itself
that it doesn't wanna face,
(wolf howls) (sniffles) and I myself,
in my weaker moments, have pondered,
"What if it's real?"
What if you had to kill it?
"How would you kill it?"
You know it's close
when the wood falls silent.
(debris rustles and crunches)
(malevolent music fades in)
Hello?
(branch snaps)
Who's there?
Come on out!
Easy, now.
(dry leaves rustle)
Come out now!
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(debris rustles)
(the Snow Demon snarls) Argh! (Crunches)
(stinging music) Argh! (Cracks)
So, I know some of us
used to make fun of Lila
for her more spiritual side of things,
but this is what she would've wanted,
for us to come out here
to the place where she passed
and... (huffs)
For Lila. (Dispirited music)
She always used to say
if someone passed away far from home
light a candle:
"Light a candle, and
they'll find their way back."
She really believed that,
all the spirits and the signs, everything.
She'd probably love this,
us freezing our arses off for her.
Let's just do it properly, for her.
We will.
She'd laugh at how serious we're being.
She mattered. That's why we're here.
Find your way home, Lila.
- Argh!
- Find your way home.
Home, Lila.
We miss you.
Come back, huh?
[Owen] Argh!
(uneasy music)
Harper.
Harper, did you hear that?
[Owen] Argh!
Shit, I think that might've
been the guy I saw earlier.
He's hurt. Has to be.
Rowan, it's dark out there.
So? We have a first aid kit in the car.
If he's injured, we have to go.
Fuck. What if he's fallen?
What if it was Lila?
What if she vanished and someone heard her
and they did nothing?
(Rowan huffs)
Let's go.
(uneasy music swells)
(wind murmurs) (crickets chirp)
[Emma] Shouldn't we all go?
(scoffs) God no, we're faster.
What if it's, I dunno,
a bear or something?
Rhea, there's no bears
in this country. Remember?
At least take a knife with you.
Rhea, the guy's
- injured.
- Please, Rowan!
It's fine. Okay?
Call the police. We need them on the way.
(door clacks) (seething music)
Came from this direction I'm pretty sure.
He sounded close, about half a mile out.
Are you all right?
I'm on edge.
What?
It's just (huffs)
Lila was out here
in the middle of the night.
You don't need to worry.
You've got me here now.
I promise you we'll find him.
Let's just keep moving.
Do you really think it
was that guy from earlier?
All I know is someone screamed.
That's enough, don't you think, huh?
Yeah. But what would
make a guy scream like that?
(uneasy music fades in)
(warped music fades out)
(handle rattles) (wind murmurs)
Come inside. It's freezing out here.
They shoulda been back by now.
Well, I told him not to go.
Should we go after them?
No, it's not safe.
We don't know that.
(huffs) Mum's gonna be pissed
if I don't bring that idiot back.
Em, did you get any signal?
No, but what would I say?
"We heard a scream in
the woods. Come quick."
- Come on.
- Yeah, well, just come inside
'cause it's too cold out here.
Let's go.
(uneasy music)
(shocking music) (Harper gasps)
Here, look. (Uneasy music continues)
Jesus Christ.
[Harper] Whoa, it's gotta be fresh.
What the hell is this?
[Owen] What makes
the story so interesting
is the connections, the similarities.
Every country, continent, has a variation
- It's him.
- On the legend.
In Native America, they
called them skin-walkers.
That's his voice.
[Owen] And here, here
they're something else.
Switch it off.
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
What do you think happened here?
Harper.
[Harper] What?
Move, now.
(Harper pants) (the Snow Demon grumbles)
Run!
(dry leaves rustle)
(Rowan breathes)
(the Snow Demon roars)
Argh! (Squelches) Argh!
Argh! Urgh!
(Rowan gurgles and rasps)
Argh, uh. (Hiccups and croaks)
Argh. Uh, uh, uh, urgh.
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(Rowan crunches and rasps)
Urgh. (Squelches)
(the Snow Demon growls)
(Harper gasps)
(cursing music)
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(deranged music)
(Harper pants)
(Harper sniffles)
(zipper buzzes)
(Harper sniffles)
(hostile music)
(Harper pants)
[Harper] Jade! Jade!
Harper?
Harper, Jesus!
Please.
(Jade groans and pants)
[Jade] Guys!
Harper, oh my god, what happened?
Where's Rowan?
Talk to us. Harper.
Talk to us.
Where's Rowan?
He was right behind you, wasn't he?
Harper, listen to me.
You're inside, okay?
You're safe now, yeah?
What the hell happened out there?
(Harper speaks indistinctly)
Harper?
(Harper sniffles)
[Harper] It, it got him.
No. No, you're wrong.
Harper, you're wrong!
What does that mean? "Got him."
What does that mean?
[Jade] Harper.
Harp, you with me?
I think she's in shock.
We need to think.
We need to figure out
what the hell is out there.
Rowan's out there!
He needs our help.
We can't just stand here.
We need to call someone.
There's no service. I tried earlier.
Someone followed them back.
Harper, listen to me.
Look at me.
You're safe.
Okay? You're safe.
You're inside. What the
hell happened out there?
(shoes patter)
(wind murmurs)
(mug clinks)
(lid clacks)
(sachet tears)
(sachet slaps)
(water trickles)
(shoes patter)
[Emma] Just try a sip. It'll help.
Harper, please.
[Jade] I'm checking
for a signal, anything.
Come on. Come on, gimme something.
Damn it.
Harper, what's that?
Whose is this?
Did it belong to that guy,
that man you encountered?
Jesus Christ. Is he a
fucking killer or something?
[Jade] Rhea, calm down.
[Owen] A beast, a hunter, a predator.
Every country, continent,
has a variation on the legend.
In Native America, they
called them skin-walkers,
and here, here they're something else.
As we encroach more and
more into the natural world,
deforestation, houses
- He's talking about Lila.
- Roads, are we encroaching
- Jesus.
- More into the world
of these myths?
(wind murmurs)
It has to be a person,
some psychopath or a hunter, something.
It has to be.
Or him! Harper, was it him?
Was it the guy you met?
Whoever it was... Urgh!
They tracked them.
That's not random.
Jade.
Last year, Lila,
she went missing right out there, too.
No. No, no, don't.
Don't make this about Lila.
That was different!
Was it? Rhea, look at Harper.
She doesn't have a scratch.
[Jade] What?
Not a cut, not a bruise, nothing.
Then whose blood?
[Rhea] It's Rowan's.
[Emma] Oh God.
[Rhea] That's Rowan's blood.
Jade.
We're leaving.
[Rhea] What? Jade, we can't!
The car's right there.
We just get in, and we go.
[Rhea] But... (huffs)
[Jade] Yeah, we can. And
we're doing it now, come on.
[Harper] Hmm. Aw.
(wretched music)
(snow patters)
(jittery music)
(latch rattles)
(Rhea pants)
[Jade] Harper, come on.
(locks clunk)
Where the fuck are they?
I don't know. They were right behind us.
Come on!
Oh come on, 'kay?
Look at me. Look at me.
Harper, we've just gotta
get to the car, okay?
Harper, look at me. It's okay.
Argh, fuck. Harper, okay, listen.
We should go.
[Emma] Go where?
I don't know. To the police station.
Why don't we wait?
I think we should go.
No, they could come
out, and we'd be gone.
I can't do that. I can't leave them.
Yeah, but we're already here.
We might as well just drive.
Yeah, but they're not here.
- I can't leave them.
- We'll come back
- I won't leave them.
- For them.
Rhea, please. I won't.
(huffs) Fuck.
Jade wouldn't leave us.
Harper, listen to me. We
need to get out of here, okay?
We need to go. Come on.
(Jade grumbles)
Harper, listen to me. You're safe, okay?
We're inside and you're safe, okay?
But we need to get out of here.
If we do not leave now,
then whatever got Rowan
is going to get us, okay?
- We need to leave.
- No! No!
Harper, we need to leave
- now!
- No! I'm not going!
Please, we need to
go. Harper, look at me.
We need to leave.
(Harper sniffles) We need to go, okay?
We need to go. Please, Harper.
Please. Please, we need to go, okay?
Okay. Okay, come on, we need to go.
We need to go, okay? Come on.
[Emma] Come on.
- Fine.
- Let's go and see.
Quickly.
(locks click)
What are you doing?
(hateful music)
(trembling music)
(pants) Uh.
(the Snow Demon growls)
(Jade gasps) (the Snow Demon pants)
(Jade yelps) (the Snow Demon growls)
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(squelches) Argh! (Squeals)
Argh!
Argh! (Squelches and squeals) Argh!
Argh! Argh!
(Rhea croaks and coughs)
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(Rhea gurgles and rasps)
(Rhea squelches)
(Rhea groans)
(gasps) Uh.
(Rhea squelches and retches)
Uh. (Grunts)
[Jade] No!
(Jade sobs)
(Jade whimpers)
Rhea! Rhea!
No! No!
No, no, no.
(Emma sobs)
(the Snow Demon breathes)
(the Snow Demon roars)
(Emma pants)
Oh! Whoa!
Argh! No!
(the Snow Demon growls)
Argh! Whoa!
Whoa! Huh!
Whoa! Whoa!
(grumbles) Oh! (Pants)
(Emma grunts)
(clandestine music)
(latch clunks)
(trunk whirs)
Argh!
(trunk thuds)
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(keys jangle)
(Emma pants)
(Rhea squelches)
(Emma wheezes)
(despairing music)
No.
(Emma wheezes)
(Emma sobs)
Rhea. Argh.
Argh. (Wheezes)
(Emma whines and wheezes)
(despairing music fades out)
(sniffles) I should've pushed harder.
I should've gotten them out sooner.
I've fucked it up,
Like always.
Harper.
Harp. (Sniffles)
He's dead.
That demon did it.
It was the demon.
(Harper sputters)
Harper, we have to get out of here, okay?
Whatever that thing is,
we have to get out of here.
(Harper sputters)
Fuck.
Emma.
(hushed music)
I think my phone's still paired. Wait.
[Emma] (rasps) Argh.
(console chimes) (Emma pants)
Come on, Emma. Pick up.
Pick up, please. Come on.
(Emma pants)
Is Emma okay?
(wheezes) Jade! Jade! (Pants)
Listen to me, Emma. Can you see the keys?
(gasps) I don't have the keys!
I dropped the keys! Uh...
Okay. C-can you reach them?
[Emma] Oh! I, I can.
I can see them.
(Rhea squelches)
Look, they're literally
right outside the door, okay?
You just have to open
and close it. That's all.
I don't know. I... (huffs)
You've got this.
(pants) Okay.
Right, I can see it.
(keys jangle) (the Snow Demon snarls)
(cracks) Gah! Argh!
Emma?
Argh! Gah, my ankle!
Argh, argh, oh.
Argh, he broke my fucking ankle! (Pants)
Okay, did you get them?
Did you get the keys?
Yes. Yes.
Argh. (Grumbles and pants)
Okay, just drive.
Just go. Just drive, okay?
(car beeps)
I can't.
(pedal clunks)
I can't!
Emma, it's an automatic,
no clutch. Just drive.
It won't start! It won't fucking start!
Oh my god.
Argh. Oh. (Pants)
Harper.
Harper, come on, we need a distraction. Uh.
Uh, come on.
What are we gonna do?
This'll have to do.
Okay, Emma, listen to me.
When I give you the signal, run, okay?
Make for the porch, and don't look back.
(Emma groans)
Please don't let me die out here.
You won't. I promise.
(phone thuds)
(the Snow Demon snarls)
(latch scrapes)
(the Snow Demon snarls)
(dry leaves rustle) (jittery music)
Now, Emma, now.
(wheezes) Argh.
Uh, (gasps) argh! Fuck.
Uh. (Pants)
Gah. (Pants)
Emma, come on. Emma, come on.
Emma, come on.
Huh. Argh!
Argh. (Pants) Jade!
Emma, come on. Emma, run!
Emma, run!
- Argh!
- Argh. Jade, help me.
Argh! Jade, what are you doing?
Help me!
Emma!
Jade, please!
No! Urgh!
Oh. (Wheezes)
Jade, why are you standing there? Please!
Oh fuck!
Get up, Emma! You can.
You can. Come o-, come on.
Fuck! Jade, you promised!
Come on. Emma.
(keys jangle)
(Emma grunts) (the Snow Demon snarls)
Argh! (Squeals)
Help! (Creaks) Argh! (Squelches)
(Emma squeals)
Argh! (Squeals)
No! Ow!
No! Argh!
(Emma shrieks)
Argh! (Squeals)
(Jade whimpers)
(Jade sobs) No! Argh!
Oh! Argh!
(Emma squeals and squelches)
(the Snow Demon grumbles)
(the Snow Demon howls)
(Jade sobs)
(dispirited music)
(door clacks)
(debris rustles)
(wind murmurs)
[Owen] On my weaker
days, I've actually pondered,
"What if this thing was real?"
Not just a superstition
but "what if it was real?"
How would you kill it?
(dictation machine clacks)
I really tried, you know.
(huffs) I tried to get us out.
I tried to get all of us out.
All I did was get her killed.
Every choice I make, someone dies.
I'm not a leader. (Sniffles)
I'm not even...
Jesus, I'm a fucking disaster.
(button clicks)
You were always stronger than me, you know?
You always knew what to do.
Lila was stronger than all of us.
Yeah, (sniffles) she was.
She wouldn't just, she
wouldn't just leave us, but she...
Maybe she never did.
Harper, I need to tell you something.
It's still here.
Just listen, okay? (Wind whistles)
The night, the night that Lila disappeared,
we had a fight, (sniffles)
And I didn't tell anyone, because I didn't,
I didn't want it to be my fault.
What did you fight about?
Everything. Nothing.
I, I don't know.
It was so silly, and
she said she needed to
go for some air, (sniffles)
And I let her go.
I let her go out into the dark alone.
You didn't know.
But I should've.
(inhales) I should've known.
I should've gone after her. I should've...
(huffs) I should've said sorry.
Lila loved you.
I know that.
I know you fought, but
what friends don't fight?
It's what we do.
I can't lose anyone else because of me.
Then don't. Fight!
Fight for all of us. Fight for Lila.
Nobody else is gonna die because of me.
(luminescent music)
We're not gonna die here.
(lock clicks)
We need to kill this thing.
Harper, focus. We need to find a weapon.
(gasps) Come on, come on.
Perfect.
(stinging music continues)
Harper, stay here.
