This Is Going to Be Big (2023) Movie Script

1
[dynamic music playing]
[bright music playing]
[atmospheric music playing]
[wind blowing]
[ambient music playing]
[indistinct student chatter]
[indistinct chatter continues]
[Halle] So, ah,
how do you feel about
being in the school play?
[Andre] I don't know.
I did it
I did the, um,
Peter Pan one we did.
[Halle] Oh yeah, I remember.
You played Smee.
[Andre]
That was the one, yeah.
[in pirate voice] "Smee,
you blithering blockhead."
-Yeah, I remember that.
-Who was Hook?
I can't remember who Hook was.
Oh, I know that Jordan
was Peter Pan. Yeah.
I think Devon, before he left,
was one of the kids.
[woman over PA system]
Excuse me, everyone.
If anyone has taken some milk
out of the staff room,
if they could put it back,
that would be great.
Thank you.
So, um, I don't know.
It's depending
Isn't this one about,
like, singing
and timelines and
Well, technically, it's gonna
be about John Farnham.
Oh.
So what they're doing,
they're, like,
going back in time
and then they have to meet
John Farnham in each year.
Ah, yeah.
Like, when he's, when he's
new doing his music
and then when he becomes
a big star.
Oh.
Like, when he's performing
and whatnot.
The main song that I
I would really love to sing
if I ever got a role in
John Farnham
I know I'm a girl, but
I really wanna try and get
the role of John Farnham
so I can sing
my aunt's favourite song.
-Mmm.
-"You're The Voice."
Right.
I'm not much
of a good singer though.
-Mm.
-But I'm gonna try.
-[pensive music playing]
-[keyboard clacking]
[distant, indistinct chatter]
[grunts]
[indistinct chatter continues]
[male voice] All right, then.
[female teacher]
Yeah. All right.
Do you guys want to come
to the bean bags?
Yeah, come on.
Come close to bean bags.
[man speaking indistinctly]
Okay, Snakes and Ladders,
or do you want to do the
ah, Connect 4?
[boy] I think one.
[boy] All I've got is
four and a half.
[teacher] Ah, it's taking
forever again.
[woman over PA system]
Attention, everyone.
If anyone has an asthma kit
from the First Aid room,
can you please bring it
to the office?
Thank you.
All right, what I'd like you
to think about is how
you can apply this to school.
All right?
John Farnham's famous,
famous, famous song,
"You're The Voice".
Because you are the voice.
If you don't use your voice
or sign or communicate,
how do we know
what we need to do?
Or how do we know what to feel
and work together as a?
-[girl] Team.
-Team. Okay?
[teacher] You know
that school production
that we've spoken about?
[student] Yeah.
It's a production about
these three
time-travelling students
and they do a project
on John Farnham.
[male student]
You can't travel back in time.
Oh, that's why
it's a production.
That's why it's like a movie.
It's a play.
[light music playing]
[tape clicking, whirring]
[John Farnham sings "Raindrops
Keep Fallin On My Head"]
[Molly Meldrum] I'm talking
about John Farnham.
John has just done
a gruelling five weeks
overseas in, uh, Europe.
He went to number one
in West Germany this week,
number one in Sweden,
roaring up the French
and Italian charts,
and they're really keen
for him in America.
So, congratulations, John.
All I am is Basically,
all I am is a singer.
And I love to do that.
Get up and make your way
to the stage.
It's like a dream.
[singing "You're The Voice"]
[pensive music playing]
[female teacher] All right.
So, at the moment,
we've got some auditions
for three main parts.
We've got Darcy.
We've got the three students:
one, two, and three,
which I can make four
if I have some awesome people.
And we've got some
John Farnhams.
So, we've got
four John Farnhams,
one from the '60s,
one from the '70s,
one from the '80s,
and one from the '90s.
So you might choose to
audition for any of these.
Oh no.
I don't know how I'm gonna do.
[quirky music playing]
[teacher]
What about you, mister?
Do you think that you'd like
to be in a production?
-[male student] No.
-Sir?
No. No.
-Not Byron?
-No.
Would you like to help out
backstage, Byron?
No.
-Nothing at all?
-No.
Okay.
Harry. You gonna be
in the production?
Okay. So, the production,
hands up
who is going to help me
and be in the production.
[male student] Yeah.
[quirky music
continues playing]
[teacher] I have here today
some scripts.
We're gonna practise them
so that when it's time
to audition,
you can choose
which role you want
and you'll be ready
to audition.
The TV interviewer begins
to introduce John Farnham
to the crowd.
[in deep voice] "Welcome
to John Farnham."
-[normal voice] But you say?
-"It's John Phantom."
I know, he wants us to
make a presentation about
John Farmhouse?
Do you know any of his songs?
Oh, hey.
I just loo looked up music
from the 1960s, and it's
on this website, it said that
they had beetles
that could sing.
That can't be right, can it?
Cool. Good.
See how much better you do
when you've got a prop
and you've got your space
and everything?
But the main thing to focus on
when you're, like,
doing the acting,
and you gotta do
the expression
and the body language.
That's right, the body.
You can't just stand there.
You gotta
You can't just stand still
like a hunched statue.
No, absolutely not.
It doesn't work that way.
So, you've gotta move
your body.
It's about everything
that makes
It's like being in a
It's like making a cartoon.
You gotta make a lot of, like,
body language expressions
and, like, if the character
doesn't have a mouth,
you have to do the eyes more.
-Mostly.
-That's right.
Like, you know Gromit
-from Wallace and Gromit?
-Yep.
-He doesn't say a word.
-Nup.
But you can understand
what he's feeling
by his body language
and his eyebrows.
Yes, you can.
Absolutely, I agree.
[beeping sound]
[clicks]
[Darcy] Good morning,
students.
Today's the day we're gonna
be doing auditions
for the school production.
If you'd like to audition,
please make your way
to the music room.
Thank you.
[PA system clicks]
[Lori] Hey, Joshie.
-[Josh] Hello.
-[Lori] How are ya?
[Josh] Waiting for the real
performance now.
[Lori] You ready?
So, we're gonna get you
to read the lines.
Darcy's gonna be Student 1,
I'm gonna be Student 2,
and Tony's gonna be Student 3.
And you're gonna be
John Farnham.
All right?
And we will get you to choose,
and I'm pretty sure,
'cause you, I know
you want the '80s,
so you've gotta choose
"You're The Voice,"
to pretend to sing along
with for us.
-Yeah, all right.
-All right?
So, we'll do the lines first.
Then we'll do the singing bit.
So, remember what I said
last week?
We are staring at you. We have
no idea what's going on.
We've just travelled back in
time and we're a bit
-All right. A bit?
-[Lori] Yeah, strange.
-Yep.
-Yep.
Off you go.
[Josh] Hey guys, are you okay?
You look like
you have seen a ghost.
Do ghosts time travel?
Well, I don't know what
the answer to that is,
but nice to meet you.
-[whispers] It's John Phantom.
-Farnham.
Whoa, this is so cool.
Hope you enjoyed the show.
Wait. Wait. Can we ask you
some questions?
Yeah, yeah.
We think you're cool.
Sure, what do you uh
Sure, what did you
want to know?
[Lori] Great, Josh.
Well done, mate.
-[Lori] Thanks, buddy.
-[door opens]
[Darcy] Good job, my man.
Who's next?
[Darcy] Halle.
I've decided to put
my hair down for this one
so it's John Farnham
wears a mullet.
[Lori laughs]
Now, do you wanna sing?
Or pretend to sing along
with "You're The Voice",
"Chain Reaction,"
"Sadie"?
[Halle] Do is there
a "You're The Voice" karaoke
that I could
follow along with?
-We've only got it on here.
-Only got the
You can just follow this one
and we'll practise
the karaoke one later.
So, do I have to sing
or do I have to do the script?
-[Lori and Darcy] Both.
-Oh, both.
[Lori] But you don't
have to sing.
You can pretend to sing
if you want to.
But I know that you
like to sing.
All right.
-I know you like to sing.
-[Halle inhaling]
I'm not
the best singer though.
-[Lori] Neither am I.
-I'm not good with vocals.
[Lori] I don't sing well,
but doesn't stop me, does it?
I've been singing
all the last few weeks.
-[Halle] All right.
-Thank God.
So, should I sing the song
first or do the script?
[Lori and Darcy] We're gonna
do the script first.
Darcy's gonna be Student 1.
I'll be Student 2.
-Tony will be Student 3.
-[Tony] I'll give you
-[Lori] Here we go.
-[Darcy] Cool.
Are you guys lost?
Is there another TV show
being filmed?
Cool costumes.
Hey. Hey guys, are you okay?
You look like
you've seen a ghost.
Um, well,
do ghosts time travel?
Well, I don't know
what the answer is to that
but nice to meet you.
[Halle clicks her tongue]
-That's John Phantom.
-Farnham.
Oh, this is so cool.
All right, you do
your performance
and then you come back.
Ready?
Hope you all enjoyed the show.
Wait. Wait. Can we ask you
some questions?
Yeah, we think you're so cool.
Sure. What'd you want to know?
-Good one.
-Good girl. All right.
Are you ready to be
"You're The Voice"?
Here you go. Look.
Oh, do I have to?
I've never done this.
[Lori] It's not a real one.
It's just pretend.
[Darcy] It's not plugged
into anything.
You just give your
You just follow along with it.
So, I can't turn it on
or anything?
-No, it's not plugged in.
-Well, I won't turn it on.
All right, so, I'm going to
go from around about
where the chorus starts, like,
the pre-chorus chorus.
You'll know the words.
[Halle] Like the
"down the barrel of a gun?"
-Yes. Pretty much.
-[music starts]
[Halle sings along] We're
all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we
look at each other
[Tony] Move around.
Good, good, good.
[Lori] That's it.
Down the barrel of a gun?
[muffled] You're the voice
try and understand it
[indistinct office chatter]
[woman on phone] Okay.
All right. I will tell him.
-[chatter indistinct]
-[school bell rings]
[pop music playing]
[students chatter
indistinctly]
Peppa Pig. [snorts]
[students laugh]
Ah, I hate you.
[Adelaide] That's Jason?
[Chelsea] Hey.
Jason, come here. Come here.
-Ex-boyfriend.
-[speaks indistinctly]
Jason I dumped after two hours
because he was being boring.
Every five minutes,
"I love you, baby.
I can't wait to [laughs]
get married. I love you.
I love you."
But, you know, I've always
just wanted to say,
"I dump your arse,"
so I said it over text.
And then he had another
girlfriend the next day.
So, oh well.
But, you know,
don't you just hate it
when your parents are
disappointed in you?
Yes.
Like, you're not the favourite
child anymore.
Yes.
I mean, the child that's
getting every
I've never been
the favourite child.
Oh, how do you think I feel?
I'm a disappointment because
I set my sister up
with her boyfriend
to get married.
[laughter]
And she doesn't want to.
-It's like, ridiculous, like
-It's her choice.
Oh, she doesn't know
what she wants.
Yes, but it's her choice.
[school bell rings]
[indistinct chatter]
[Lori] Who's next?
[Darcy] Reece, Harry,
and Chelsea.
[quirky music playing]
-[Reece] Here.
-[Chelsea] Here.
[Darcy] Yeah, that's okay.
It's all right.
[Chelsea] I mean, I want
to be famous and stuff.
[Lori laughs]
Do we need to use expression
like when we're?
-[Lori] Absolutely.
-[Darcy] Absolutely.
-[Darcy] We'd love it.
-And speak slowly and clearly.
That's it. Take your time.
All right.
Can you believe what Darcy
wants us to do?
It sounds like so much work.
It's like he wants us to learn
or something.
We have to make a poster
about John Farmhouse?
[Harry] It's, it's Farnham.
Ugh, old musicals suck.
I know. It can't be any good
if it's that old.
-Well done, guys.
-Whoo-hoo! Yeah!
Big claps. You can put
your script back here.
-[Tony] Good job. Good job.
-[Darcy] Is that your one?
[Lori] Thank you, my darling.
Good job.
[Elyse] Oh, it keeps moving.
[laughing]
[light music playing]
[yelps]
[light music continues]
Ahh!
-[Lori] Hi, Elyse.
-Hi.
-[Darcy] All right.
-Are you ready, sweets?
-[Elyse] Mm-hm.
-[Lori] All right.
Hey, guys, you okay?
You look like
you've seen a ghost.
Um, well, do ghosts
time travel?
Well, I don't know what
the answer is to that,
but nice to meet you.
-[Lori] Well done, sweetheart.
-[Darcy] Good job, buddy.
-All right.
-Well done. All right.
-Gonna sing along.
-This one's for you.
[Lori] Ready?
["Sadie The Cleaning Lady"
starts playing]
[Elyse sings along]
Sadie, the cleaning lady
[Lori] Good girl.
[Lori sings along] With
trusty scrubbing brush
And a pail of water
Worked her fingers
to the bone
-[Lori] Good girl, that's it.
-[Darcy] Nice.
-Well done. Good.
-Well done, buddy.
-Excellent work.
-[Lori] Good, good, good.
[light guitar music playing]
-I I like Jack's face.
-I love him.
-He's beautiful.
-He's got a big face.
-I know.
-A big expressive face.
-And same with Chelsea.
-Yeah.
-She's just spot on.
-She's already
Really, she's one of our best
options for a student.
So, I really
You know what I mean?
[Tony] Mm-hmm.
Is she the one that's been to
acting school or something?
I don't know.
She just loves it.
She just wants to be
a superstar.
[laughter]
[Darcy]
Halle's got some pipes.
Anyone else notice that?
-Who?
-Halle.
-Halle? Yeah, she's not bad.
-[Darcy] That wasn't bad.
-[Darcy] I liked that.
-Problem is,
-I want her as a student.
-I know you do but
So, we've got Cory, tick.
Halle, Josh, Andre, tick.
-Adelaide is a tick.
-[Lori] Yep.
Reese is a tick.
Halle is a tick.
And Chelsea is a tick.
I think for Elyse,
maybe having a lesser role
is not gonna have her
-Yeah.
-remembering heaps of lines.
You know, and putting a lot
of pressure on herself.
'Cause that is a real spiral
for her
-Yeah.
-to have her episodes.
So, um
[Lori] I could make her
a student.
Minor student with the others
if she wants.
That would be perfect.
-Into
-So, we talk to Halle and say:
"What would you
actually prefer?"
Yeah. I think that's
what we do.
[Lori] And if she actually
wants to be John Farnham,
she can be one of them.
Yeah. We've got 20-odd minutes
here. Do you wanna grab?
-I reckon we grab her.
-Grab her?
Yep. Let's find out
what she wants.
[teacher] People
fill out the votes.
Remind students they can
vote for themselves.
So, it's the same as
when we picked
the school captains last year.
They made the ballot papers.
They delivered the
ballot papers to each class.
[Darcy] Hey, I know you're
in the middle of something,
but can I borrow Halle
for, like, five minutes
at the most?
-[teacher] Yeah.
-Sorry.
[woman speaks indistinctly]
-[Lori] All right, so.
-[Halle] Yes.
Lovely girl, you have
blown us away,
which I told you you would.
-[Halle] Yeah? What's news?
-Um
[Lori] So,
what we would like to know
is what you would prefer.
-Okay?
-[exhaling]
Would you prefer to be
John Farnham,
but only on stage
for then a short time?
Or would you prefer
to be a student
who will be on stage
for most of the time?
Ooh, that's
a bit of a hard one.
Well, the thing is,
I wanna play a main role
so I can, like, be
a big actress
[Lori] Mmm. And that
would be the student
for something.
But I also wanna be
a good singer as well.
And I wanna sing that
to honour my aunt.
-[Lori] I know. Absolutely.
-So
I completely get that.
Are you happy to wait
until next Thursday?
-Mmm, I'll decide. I'll dec
-It's a week.
-Okay.
-[Lori] Have a think.
I'll think about it.
[Tony] But next Thursday's
the cut-off.
If you haven't decided
by then, we will.
[gentle, upbeat music playing]
[mooing]
[gentle, upbeat music
continues]
My name is Halle, um,
and I have a big interest
in movie making.
The thing is, they can tell us
stories about ourselves
and what we can actually do
for our futures.
But my main interest
is, um, dragons.
Dragons are awesome,
don't get me wrong,
but a lot of people shamed me
because of my liking
for dragons.
Um, I had a couple of people
that kept bullying me
and they would usually
pick on me
because of my liking for
dragons and drawing.
They would tell me,
"Oh, all you draw is dragons.
You're pathetic."
And they always made fun
of me because I'm
I have an
autism spectrum disorder,
and I was having difficulty
understanding things
and not doing things right,
and they would call me
pathetic and stupid,
and it just hurt me really bad
because it made me feel like
I can't do anything right,
and it just made me feel that
I wasn't smart enough
or good enough to do anything.
So, tell me how you're feeling
about the school production.
I really want to know.
Well, I'm feeling very nervous
about it,
'cause, I don't know,
I always had a fear that
I'm gonna mess it up somehow.
[Halle's mum] Yeah,
but that's, that's normal
and it's exactly what happens
to everybody.
-Yeah?
-Mm. True.
You just gotta try your what?
-Best.
-Yeah.
I'm trying to follow along
with what
John Farnham's vocals
go into the song.
What do you mean?
Well, the way he sings it.
Like
[singing "You're The Voice",
voice going up and down]
Oh, 'cause he goes
up and down.
Yeah, 'cause he goes up
and down and whatnot.
Yeah.
That was Aunt's
favourite song.
I know.
She'd be proud of you
for doing this.
Yeah. What do you think
she would say?
I can hear her saying,
"You go, Hall."
Yeah, I can hear her
saying it now.
And can you remember
this photo being taken?
Yeah, I remember.
We were walking
up and down the new
neighbourhood that day.
-[Halle's mum] I miss her.
-[Halle] Me too.
[Halle's mum] So,
Aunt was quite elderly
and passed away
quite suddenly,
and I think Halle harbours
a lot of guilt
that she didn't get
to say goodbye,
because Halle's core being
is family and, and trust.
Um, as a mum,
all I want for her
is to be happy
and part of something
where she feels like
she belongs,
because so often in life,
she feels that
she's never belonged.
And watching her up there
doing her thing
and wanting to make
someone proud,
I think I'll be hoping for her
that she fulfils that.
[cooing indistinctly]
What do you reckon's
the best Disney cat?
Like, an animated cat.
Oh, God, Halle, I don't know.
[indistinct student chatter]
[Halle] Hello.
[Halle] Morning!
[student] So, um,
I'll see how it goes.
[beeping sound]
-[Darcy] How are you feeling?
-[Halle] Nervous.
Nervous? Now, last week
we left you with a question.
Yes.
I've decided to go for the
role of John Farnham.
-[Darcy] You have?
-[Lori] Okay. And so
[Darcy] And you feel
excited for that?
-Yes.
-[Darcy] Excellent.
And when I mean John Farnham,
I mean the '80s one
with the one,
"You're The Voice".
-Yes.
-You are locked in.
-All right? Ready to go.
-Locked in, mate.
-I got the part?
-[Lori] Yep.
[Darcy] You got the part,
my friend.
-Oh, yes.
-[Darcy and Lori laugh]
My aunt's gonna be so proud.
I know she would, mate.
Very cool.
[Lori] She is, she's gonna be
And you know what?
We're gonna actually
ask you also
if you can learn
the '60s one as well,
just in case the '60s person
is sick.
-Okay.
-[Lori] Yeah?
[Darcy] So, that's called
an understudy.
-[Halle] Understudy, got it.
-Understudy, that's right.
Well, I'm not very good at
an understudy part, but
[Lori] It just means learning
some lines and being prepared.
Let's just hope I can learn
both roles at the same time.
[Darcy] Yeah. When we put
"The Incredibles" on,
what did we do the other day?
Did we quote every line
word for word?
-Uh, yeah, we did.
-[Darcy] All right.
And I think that your memory
for learning lines
will come in handy,
and you'll be all over it.
-[Darcy] Yeah.
-All right.
-[Darcy] Cool? You happy?
-Thank you so much.
This is gonna be big.
Over here. Over here.
[Darcy] That one there, buddy.
[Lori] That's it, sweetie.
Good girl.
[Chelsea] Oh,
you called me a sweetie.
[Lori] Yeah,
'cause you are sweetie.
My mum does that.
-You are a sweetie.
-How are you feeling?
Pretty nervous, actually.
-Pretty nervous?
-[Lori] Yeah?
We would both like to
congratulate you
in being successful
in being one of the students.
[Chelsea gasps]
[laughter]
[Chelsea squeals]
-[Lori laughs]
-[Darcy] Are you excited?
[Lori] Do you want Student 1
or Student 3?
Um, Student 1.
[Lori] You wanted Student 1?
All right, you are Student 1.
-[Darcy] There you go.
-[Lori] Done.
-[Chelsea squeals]
-[Darcy] Congratulations.
Obviously, you're excited.
[Chelsea] Yeah,
I'm more than that.
Maybe I can get
whatever I want tonight.
[all laughing]
[Lori] You mean dinner-wise?
Do you get to choose dinner,
you reckon?
Oh, no. I can just tell my
parents what to do and
[Lori and Darcy laugh]
"I'm gonna be a star, Mum.
You need to do everything
I want you to do."
[Darcy] You're just gonna
swish your hair back.
[Lori] That's it, that's it.
Good girl, that's it.
[Darcy] Well, congratulations.
[Darcy] All right.
How are you feeling?
-Good.
-[Darcy] Good.
-Are you excited?
-Yeah.
So, what Lori and I
had a chat about,
I know we auditioned
for John Farnham.
-All right?
-Mm-hm.
But Lori and I
really wanted to make
some more student roles
available.
How do you feel about
being a student?
Um, not too sure.
Not too sure? That's okay.
So, what we'll do from now is
we'll get the script
all ready to go,
and we'll get your lines that
you're gonna have.
-So you can practise them.
-Okay.
-Does that sound good?
-Yep.
Awesome. How are you feeling?
-Good.
-Good. Awesome.
[Lori] All right.
[Darcy] So, how you feeling?
-Nervous, but confident.
-[Lori laughs]
[Darcy] So, there is
a role, all right?
There's a role for you in
the production, all right?
-Yep.
-So, congratulations.
-Good job.
-Thank you.
At the moment,
we're looking to put you
as '60s John Farnham.
-Yep.
-[Lori] If that's okay.
[Darcy] If that's okay.
How's that sound?
-Yep, that's all right.
-Excellent.
And I know you wanted
the '80s, I know.
No, that's all right.
[Lori] But Sadie is actually
a really important
-part of the show.
-Yeah.
And we thought that you
would actually be
-the best one for it.
-All right.
And we thought you'd look
pretty good in a suit as well.
You're gonna look
pretty dapper.
-All right.
-[Darcy] What do you reckon?
-[Darcy] Sound good?
-Sounds good.
[Lori] Now, what we'd like
you to do, though,
is be the understudy
for the '80s one.
[Darcy] Do you know what
understudy means?
-No.
-[Lori] So that means that
if the person who's playing
the '80s John Farnham is sick
Yep.
you'll be doing
that one as well.
I'll be the replacement?
All right, brilliant.
-[Darcy] Perfect, man.
-[Lori] All right?
-Thank you.
-[Darcy] No dramas.
-No, thank you.
-Are you happy?
I'm absolutely happy.
I didn't
It doesn't matter
what John Farnham role I got
as long as
I preferably
would like the '80s,
but, hey, that's all right.
-[Darcy] Perfect.
-All right.
-[Darcy] All good, mate?
-Thank you.
-Well done. Excellent, Josh.
-Thank you, Josh. All right.
[indistinct chatter]
[pensive music playing]
[Josh] I wanted to get
the '80s John Farnham,
but not everything works out.
My grandpa actually put this
perfectly to my mum once.
You know, you have to roll
with the punches
sometimes, you know?
I still at least got
the backup role
with the '80s John Farnham,
so I'm still happy about that.
I think if you're gonna
portray someone
like John Farnham, you
I look at it that you wanna
dot all your t's
Ah, cross the t's, dot
dot the i's.
Because he just became one of
Australia's brilliant legends,
so I was
I was pretty much humbled
by the fact that
I manged to even get a role.
[school bell rings]
[quirky music playing]
[quacking]
[Josh's mum] There's that
[Josh's mum] There's another
Milo there for you, mate.
Thanks, Mum.
Grandma made it before.
-Ah, sweet.
-Mm-hmm.
Bit cold, this one.
That's all right.
[Josh's mum]
Yeah, it fell out
[Josh] You know,
family's definitely
the number one
important thing, um, for me,
um, Mum and Grandma
especially.
So, they've both helped me
to get to who I am
and where I am today.
And the other thing that
I really love and enjoy
is aviation.
And I hope to get a job
as a fast jet pilot.
I don't think there's anything
quite like it.
[music ends]
Hear one.
And he's coming
from the front, roughly.
[distant aircraft sounds]
[gentle music playing]
[Josh] Here in Victoria,
we do our pilot's training
down at RAAF base, Point Cook.
And that occurs during the
school holidays for two weeks.
I was hoping to do that
but 'cause I'm still
in the process
of getting
my medical certificate,
they need to get more
background details
on my disabilities
and how that affects
my ability
to pilot an aircraft.
Probably an A320. Probably.
Just a different tone
of the engine.
But, yet again,
that could be due to
the different distance.
So, there is a lengthy process
to it with my case.
But they've not said no.
And I
The key to getting
to your goals
is through determination.
I mean, at the end of the day,
you never know
what's gonna happen.
Yeah, I hear 'em.
I think.
Unless that's
[distant plane roaring]
a different one.
No, that's definitely
another one that's coming in.
[plane roaring louder]
[indistinct student chatter]
-[whistle blowing]
-[chatter continues]
[Elyse] You know,
being able to go to school's
been a blessing.
At my other school
I used to get sent home
because of my seizures
multiple times a day.
Used to have
eight to ten a day.
Now I'm having none
or one a day.
And I
I haven't really been
bullied here.
So, at my other school,
I used to get bullied
every day, pretty much.
And that's made going
to school a nightmare.
And then caused me
to do self-harm
and all that sort of stuff.
So I've, trust me,
I've improved so much
from then.
I'm going to school
five days a week now.
I used to go
three days a week to school,
or hardly at all
because of it.
[school bell rings]
[piano notes playing
under gentle music]
I got diagnosed with
generalised anxiety disorder.
So, it started off with ticks,
and then little jolts,
and they said,
"You need to go home.
They look like mini seizures."
And I went home
bawling my eyes out.
You're always looking for
the dangers with anxiety.
You're not looking
You're not looking
for the positive,
you're looking for
the dangers.
And that's what kept
pushing me
back and back and back.
And that's what made me worse,
is because I didn't know
how to use positive self-talk
or how to
Can I help myself get out
of this situation?
[pensive music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
-[Lori] All right.
-[girl] What are we doing?
[Lori] We're going to start
looking at the script.
Now, Student 2 is not going
to be called Student 2.
[Chelsea] It's going
to be called what?
You need to come up with
a name for your character.
-Can we use our actual name?
-No. Absolutely not.
-Rose.
-Rose.
So, Student 2's name is Rose.
Okay, what would your
character like to be called?
You can have a think about it
and tell me next week.
Okay, what's a name you really
want to call your baby?
[laughter]
She might not want
to have babies.
Okay, I'm gonna choose a name
that my parents will hate.
And it's going to be
[Chelsea laughs]
[Adelaide] Just go. Hurry up.
-Brooke.
-Brooke. Are you sure?
-No, Madison.
-Mad are you sure?
Yeah.
Actually, can I
change my name?
[Lori] I knew
you might change it.
-[Lori] That was very quick.
-I am changing to Max.
I am changing it to Max.
Well, Max can be
a girl or a boy,
-'cause you can be Maxine
-Yeah. So Max, Max, Max.
-So maybe Max.
-And then if I change my mind,
-that I wanna be a boy
-Wait, hang on.
-None of this "if".
-No, no, no, no if I
If I change my mind,
I wanna be a boy
instead of a girl,
then I'll still be Max.
-[Lori] Oh, okay.
-Calm down.
I reckon you should be a girl
Max. Girl Max is pretty cool.
Calm down. Yeah.
And are you still stalking
John Farnham?
John Farnham, of course.
I need to find him.
Is that illegal?
-Stalking?
-Yeah.
Well, officially, actual
stalking is illegal, yes. But
All right, because
I technically stalk
all my crushes,
just 'cause they're so cute.
[laughter]
Yeah.
-Nice.
-I'm gonna change my name.
[sighs] To what?
Um
Can you imagine how long
it's going to take me
to go through on the computer
and change your
the "Student 1" to Brooke
every single time
it says "Student 1"?
-Okay, let's get to it.
-[Lori] Okay.
-[laughs]
-[Lori] Um
So, this scene,
you've been at school,
Darcy has given you
your project.
You're a bit grumpy about it.
-[Adelaide] Who's going first?
-[Lori] All right.
So, Student 1
[Chelsea] Can you believe what
Darcy wants us to do?
[announcement over PA system]
Good afternoon, students.
Just a reminder that
applications
for school captain
close tomorrow,
so make sure you
get those in soon.
Thank you.
[pensive music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
Finally.
[indistinct chatter continues]
[Chelsea] Thalia! Thalia.
Thalia, come here.
Fatty Pumba.
T-T-Thalia!
Thalia Willmer.
Thalia Willmer Aquilina,
you come here right now.
Don't go and hurt the ferrets.
You know better.
Come here right now.
Yeah, come here.
Yeah, yay! Yay!
[laughing]
Do I get a kiss?
Growing up,
my dreams were always like,
be a princess
and live in a magic castle.
But my mum has always
told me that, like,
spiritually, maybe I could be,
like, you know, a princess
or something.
But now my dreams
are more like
being a motivational speaker
and a businesswoman one day.
It also means
I'm going to have to do
a lot of work and stuff,
like, actually
get off my butt.
To be honest,
when I was a little girl
I definitely imagined myself
being in a wheelchair forever.
You know,
it's actually my, um
my eleven-year anniversary
in a few weeks
from when I got hit
by the car.
I developed
quite a few problems,
like, I get tired so easily,
and sometimes when I'm
really, really stressed
or I kind of over-exert,
then I end up fainting.
To be honest, I like to scream
into my pillow
and just scream
all the bad out.
Oh, hi, Wendy.
Sorry, my cat's right ne
behind you.
Yeah. Wendy! Wendy!
Come to Mama.
[Chelsea's mum] Chelsea's my
youngest child. She's 16.
And, when she was five, she
got an acquired brain injury.
So she was hit by a car.
Very close to dying.
At the time when
when it happened,
we spent about six months
at the Children's recovering.
And so she had to do,
you know,
everything again,
walking, talking.
Um, but she's really strong
in herself,
and I think that's really
helped her
because she's like a fighter.
Yeah.
Um, she's super funny.
You know, everyone says
she should be a comedian.
[laughs] Yeah.
Has she cried yet?
See, that, she just [laughs]
She wants me to cry
but I'm not gonna.
[laughs]
All right.
Nice?
It's actually really good.
Which is understandable,
'cause I helped.
[laughter]
And did you hear what I said
about Hotdog Awareness Month?
So, Mum, did you know that
it's Hotdog Awareness Month?
That means all month long
everyone's a wiener.
[Chelsea's mum
and Chelsea laugh]
-[Chelsea's mum] Mmm.
-[Chelsea's dad] Told you.
I really know
how to lighten the mood.
You weirdo. [laughs]
Is there anything that's
worrying you about
the production?
-Well, I
-That's gonna come up, or?
I did say my anxiety and me
forgetting my lines, but I
Yeah? Do you ever
do it in rehearsal?
-Hardly.
-Yeah.
It wouldn't be
the end of the world
if you forgot your lines.
Yeah. I told them
it is just a school play,
but, like,
I'm a perfectionist, so
Yeah.
I lose, they lose.
[all laughing]
[Chelsea's sister]
You're evil.
And you're gonna make
Mum cry again.
-You love it. Look at her.
-[Chelsea's mum] No, I'm not.
[laughs]
You know, Chelsea, that
we're all really proud of you.
Yeah?
I'm listening.
[Chelsea's mum laughs]
You're doing great things
at school.
Do I get a puppy from it?
-[dad] Oh, Chelsea. No.
-[Chelsea's mum] No.
[Chelsea's dad] You're cheeky.
[Chelsea] I just think
that I need
to look ahead to the future
not back into the past
of what could have happened,
you know?
And that's why I think that
on the show,
I was really happy
to get the role.
I didn't expect to get it
because I've always kind of
hoped for things
and then end up
don't getting them
'cause I was a kid
with a brain injury.
Now it's like a whole mountain
that I need to climb to,
you know, get over it.
But it's been a lot of tears,
a lot of anxiety.
But I'm really excited
about it.
[magical music playing]
[Lori]
They're really very late.
They are, that's what I'm
saying, you might need to go
I'll make an announcement.
I'll make an announcement.
So glad you do that.
[Lori over PA system]
Good morning, everybody.
Sorry for another
announcement,
but we will be having
a full run-through
for production this morning,
so all production crew need
to come down to the gym.
And we'll be doing
a full run-through.
Anyone is welcome
to come and watch as well.
So, we would welcome
an audience.
Thank you.
[indistinct chatter]
[Darcy] Guys, so, can we all
please come and find a seat
somewhere in here where you
can see-slash-hear me,
while we get ready for
today's, ah, chaos.
Organised chaos,
I think we'll call it.
Ah, who's got a bit of an idea
about how today's
going to run?
-Hands up.
-[Shell] Um
Darcy? I have a question.
Charlotte,
what do you think's
[Shell] We're gonna be
dancing all day.
[Darcy] Dancing all day.
Good shout.
-Josh?
-[Josh] Um
Well, it's gonna be
pretty much
the whole entire run-through,
but just several times
throughout the day
-[Darcy] Correct.
-So we've got it.
[Darcy] So,
two full run-throughs,
but spread out
across the whole day.
-Does that sound okay?
-[all] Yeah.
All right, can I have everyone
from scene one?
[Lori] That's you, darling.
Over you go.
[Darcy] Over to behind
Or over where Amber's sitting.
[boy] Just show thumbs up.
[Darcy] All right, here we go.
Welcome back,
ladies and gentlemen.
Today, we are going
to hear a song
from a great new talent.
His name is Johnny Farnham.
Here he is with some
lovely backup dancers,
and his song
"Sadie, The Cleaning Lady."
-[Lori] Hit it, Liam.
-[Darcy] Go for it, Liam.
["Sadie The Cleaning Lady"
by John Farnham starts]
Sadie the cleaning lady
With trusty scrubbing brush
and pail of water
[Darcy] Good job, you girls.
Good job. That's it.
[Lori] To your spots.
[Darcy] Find your spots.
Find your spots.
she had at home
[Darcy] Ready for our dance.
Providing at the same time
for her daughter
Oh Sadie the cleaning lady
[Darcy] Good.
Her female mind would find
a way of trapping
Though as gentle as a lamb
Sam the elevator man
So she could spend the night
by a TV napping
[sound gradually fading]
-[distant roadway noise]
-[birds calling]
[unlocks door, opens door]
-[Josh] Hi, Mum.
-What have you gone and done?
Well, uh,
I've had an award today.
[gasps] You got another award.
-Yeah.
-Oh, mate, that's excellent.
-Look.
-[Josh's mum gasps]
Darling. Oh my gosh.
Oh, sweetheart,
I am so proud of you.
Oh, darling, that's great.
I have to stand on tippy toes
'cause you're so tall.
I know.
[Josh] Hi, Grandma. I've just
got some news for you.
[grandma over phone]
What's that, love?
Oh, I've just gotten an award
at school today
for Outstanding
School Citizenship.
Oh, Josh, that's lovely.
Oh, I'm absolutely proud
of you, darling.
That's wonderful.
Yeah, well, I have to
get going, Grandma.
I need to get ready.
No, that's all right, love.
You go and get organised,
darling.
And thanks for letting me know
your wonderful news.
-No worries.
-It's really good.
-All right, see you, Grandma.
-Okay, love.
-See you, Mum.
-Bye.
-Bye, love. Love you. Bye-bye.
-Love you too, bye.
-Love you too. Bye, love.
-Bye. Bye.
-Bye-bye.
-Bye.
[shaver buzzing]
[Josh's mum] With Josh, he was
always going to be a fireman
and then he just said,
"No, I can do better than
a fireman, Mum."
And he come to us
and said when he turns 18,
he wants to join
the Air Force.
And basically, he just
lives and breathes
for Air Force Cadets.
Loves it.
He used to have meltdowns
with his emotional autism.
If he's had a bad day,
I take him to
get his mind off it,
and we go
and watch the planes,
and they come right over
the top of our car.
And he'll say,
"Mum, that's a A380,"
and I'll say, "Okay,
I just know it's got wings."
[Josh's mum]
Yeah. Yeah, lovely.
[distant, indistinct chatter]
[Josh] Excuse me.
Banner coming through.
[Josh] Really, I
I love aviation,
and and that's why
I've signed up
to the Australian
Air Force Cadets.
We actually came second
this year, ah,
runners up in drill comp
and annual parade.
[leader] Turn to the right,
in column of route.
Right turn.
[inaudible instructions]
[instructor] March.
[band plays
"Waltzing Matilda"]
[indistinct chatter]
[Josh's mum]
He makes me so proud
because I know
I've raised him the right way.
It's been pretty tough.
I've also got an intellectual
disability, like Josh.
I didn't grow up, ah,
having a lot of friends.
I said to my mum,
[emotionally] "Why aren't I
like everybody else?"
And then Josh
would get emotional,
and he would say, "Why can't
I be just like someone else?"
And I said,
"Because you're unique."
And I said,
"You're like your mum.
And, unfortunately,
I made a mini-me."
And that's when he said,
"I love you so much, Mum."
He said, "For the way you sit
and explain things to me."
[indistinct chatter]
I would just say to him,
"It is hard.
And life isn't gonna
always be kind.
And you've just gotta
find another way
to get around those
those things."
[woman 1] When they went
when they went to, um
[woman 2] Yeah, you.
Your name is
-Your name is that, right?
-Yeah.
[indistinct chatter]
[beeping sound]
-[loud, indistinct chatter]
-[door shuts]
[man] All right, everyone.
We might get started.
I've got a very important
thing to do
today at assembly,
and that's to listen to
the school captain's
speeches for 2023.
So, the first person
that's gonna come up
and do their school captain
speech for 2023
is Halle.
[applause, cheering]
All right.
Does it need a wipe?
No? Okay.
[Halle exhales]
Okay.
Hello, everybody,
my name is Halle Grant.
Many of you know me for doing
my art works in the art shows,
organising
Halloween dress-up day,
and being in the school
production this year.
To me, being a school captain
is about showing respect
towards everyone,
making their day,
giving them
the help they need,
and showing them
all kind and caring support.
I hope you can vote for me,
because if you do,
I will be the best helping,
supportive school captain.
Thank you all so much
for listening
and have a great day.
Vote for Halle
to get a Halle-lujah.
[students applauding,
cheering]
Well done, Halle. Excellent.
Um, next I'll ask Andre
to come up, please.
[applause]
[Andre]
Firstly, I would like to
help students
with their mental health.
And I would also like to
get more shade cloths
or shelter in the yard.
I would like to thank everyone
for listening to my speech.
And always remember, a smile,
a smile will take you a mile.
Please vote for
Andre Lilian McMann.
Thank you for listening,
everyone.
[cheering, applause]
Awesome, that's great.
Good stuff.
Thank you, everyone.
Have a nice weekend.
[indistinct chatter]
-And he goes in with the, um
-[school bell rings]
sword, the guard
didn't go back.
Oh, yeah?
-[bus engines idling]
-[chatter, laughter]
[indistinct chatter continues]
Bye, Ann. Bye, Jacko.
[woman] One last
test run for today.
-[Elyse] Bye, Tate.
-[Tate] See you later.
[gentle music playing]
Bye, Tracy.
Look after yourself.
[gentle music continues
playing]
Sometimes, when I get bored,
I look for bugs.
Like, it's just amazing
how fragile they are.
They look all strong,
and then they're very fragile.
It's crazy to think
what a little bug is.
Yep, that's them.
[Elyse laughs]
-[Elyse's dad] Hello, darling.
-[Elyse] Hello.
-How are you doing?
-Good.
How was your day
at school today?
Good.
I caught a skink today.
-You caught a skink?
-Yeah.
-Did you put it back?
-Yes, I did.
But this one pooed
and weed on me.
Ugh!
How are you going
with your maths?
I'm doing actually
really good.
There was only one question
that I did not understand.
-That's good.
-Yeah.
How do you think the, um,
change has been
from going from
your old school to now?
Can you see much
of a difference in yourself?
A huge difference.
I'm not having any
much seizures.
I only had one, Tuesday,
in the first week
of back at school.
But, you know, it happens.
-Yep.
-You know?
You just gotta try and
manage yourself.
-Don't you?
-Yeah.
You can't forget about your
strategies in your toolbox.
-Yeah.
-'Cause that's what's
gonna help you
when you're feeling anxious.
Yeah.
[pensive music playing]
[approaching footsteps]
-[Elyse's mum] Hey.
-[Elyse] Hey.
-How was your day?
-Good.
-Had a good day at school?
-Yeah.
I wanna go down there.
[Elyse's dad] For a long time,
we were pushing for Elyse
to be assessed to be moved
to a different school.
We knew that she wasn't coping
or understanding the work,
but she kept getting
pushed through,
and pushed through,
and pushed through.
For the first time
in her life,
she's actually made friends.
Um, and as a parent,
that's all you want
for your children.
Oh, you got two.
-Really?
-[Elyse's dad] Yeah.
I saw two splashes.
That counts.
[Elyse's dad]
When Elyse came to us
and said that she wanted to be
involved in a musical,
we were absolutely shocked.
We never thought
that she would
push outside her comfort zone
to do that sort of stuff.
[calm music playing]
[Elyse] I thought it would
maybe help boost my confidence
and
yeah, I've always struggled
to get on stage and that.
And I just felt like
I'm doing better now.
I should do something fun
and try and do something new.
I'm really proud of myself,
actually getting in there
and doing stuff.
[door grating]
[upbeat music playing]
[beeping sound]
[woman over PA system] Can all
students in the production
please come to the library?
Can all students
in the production
please come to the library?
[woman] Yeah,
see if that paint's
[female student] I mean,
I have something underneath.
Just go to that
bathroom there.
So, we're gonna go behind
the screen over there
and review.
-You right there?
-Yeah.
[Lori] I think someone
might be in there.
-You've got pants.
-Yeah.
Shirt. Look, don't worry about
the tie, just
Oh, Nelson, we might do
Nelson, at the back.
[Lori laughs]
[woman] The sleeves
are too short.
Your sleeves are too short,
but you look amazing.
-But
-[Lori] How gorgeous is he?
[female student]
Oh, I do like the sleeves.
[Lori] The sleeves
are a bit short,
but, yeah, it's kind of cool.
The sleeves are
a bit short, but
[Lori] Was it cool in the
'60s to have short sleeves?
Can we?
I feel like I need
to Google that. Right.
I worry, do, do we look
tartan or do we look clown?
-I think we look clown.
-[woman] Put your jacket down.
[Lori laughing]
[Josh] Putting on my costume
for the very first time,
it was actually
quite exciting.
Pants were a bit tight, but
around the waist and, ah
But apart from that,
I think we're
pretty much good to go.
[gentle, upbeat music playing]
[Josh practises singing
"You're The Voice"]
[girl] Yes!
I actually remembered
something.
[Darcy] All right, you're
going over, you're waving.
Someone says?
Oh, I changed my stage name
when I released this album.
-Sounds more grown up.
-Sure.
-We can start it together.
-I guess we have to.
[Lori] Down here, and can you
pretend to play guitar?
That's it. Good job, mate.
[feel-good music plays]
Ah, look at this.
[Darcy] All right,
you guys sit down.
You're over his shoulder,
he's typing away.
Lights will fade in
three, two, one.
-You're in darkness. Scram.
-[Lori] Go.
[Darcy] And then you're gonna
get to the front of the scene,
front of the line.
You guys are in the front
of the line.
[girl] Still confident? Go.
[Darcy] Okay.
Are we good to go?
[Lori] You remember, we go to
the corner, and we be naughty.
[Darcy] Mark, you say,
"Did you do your homework?"
Mark?
-[Lori] Finn, that's you.
-Oh.
Did you do your homework?
[Darcy] Hang on, let's pause.
Nice and loud, Mark.
Talk to me.
[louder] Did you do
your homework?
-[Darcy] Good.
-[boy] Yeah, sorta.
I hate homework.
[Darcy] You always
hate homework.
[Finn] I did mine.
[Darcy] Well done, big claps,
great scene.
[applause, cheering]
[Elyse] Doing the singing,
the dancing,
and everything I needed to do,
I felt like I wasn't ready.
But I thought,
I need to give it a go.
'Cause I was worried
of what people would
think about me,
just because of my old school,
um, people not really
liking me
and saying hurtful words
and that.
But there's been
some really big changes
that have helped me
from the production.
[Darcy] Good, but
you're very, very nervous.
[Elyse] I definitely feel like
I'm doing
a really good job now.
Um, my confidence is boosted
and everything.
So, yeah.
[Darcy] Rex stands up
and opens the door.
All right, song starts. We're
going to move out the way.
[music to "Raindrops Keep
Fallin On My Head" starts]
Raindrops keep falling
on my head
Oh, but that doesn't mean
My eyes will soon
be turning red
Crying's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop
the rain by complaining
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me
[cheering and applause]
[Darcy] All right, pause.
Give it a clap.
Way to go, raindrops.
-Good job. All right.
-[Lori] Good job, you guys.
[Darcy] All right.
Now, raindrops,
we're gonna exit
to the back corner.
[Lori] You're going to have to
hang on to them.
[voices fading into
indistinct chatter]
[solemn music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
[Adelaide] Chelsea,
go to scene two,
because there's just us three
in scene two as well,
so let's start that one.
You say, "I know,
it can't be good,
it can't be good
if that's old.
-If it, it's that old."
-Okay.
I know. It can be any good
if it's that old.
Um, and then Beck says,
"My dad had"
No, not "my dad had".
Duh, it's the band,
The Beatles.
Yeah, you know Hey Jude,
and I Wanna Hold Your Hand?
You're doing great, okay?
I don't wanna
overexert myself.
["Sadie The Cleaning Lady"
by John Farnham plays]
[Darcy] Excellent. All right.
-[Lori] To your places.
-[Darcy] Find your spot.
Sienna, you're here.
[Chelsea] I feel like
I could actually faint.
If you do, I'll be here, okay?
I'll be there if you do fall.
I feel blurry.
Okay. Concentrate on me
'cause then maybe
that'll help.
[song continues playing]
Um, what does it,
the middle look like?
[groaning]
[Adelaide]
It's okay. It's okay.
[boy speaks indistinctly]
Hey, help them.
-[Adelaide] It's okay.
-I think she had a seizure.
[Adelaide] No, it's faint.
Just faint, it's okay.
[Darcy] That's all right.
-[Darcy] You all right, Chels?
-[Lori] Chelsea, you okay?
[Adelaide]
She just fainted, that's okay.
[Darcy] Oh, okay.
All right, guys.
Could we just move our way
into the other room
and we'll go and
sit on those chairs?
You too, Adelaide.
Hey, Chels, it's Darce here.
You're okay, buddy.
I've got your hands here.
Everything's okay.
Trace is coming, dude.
Make sure you keep breathing,
yeah? Big breathes.
-[Chelsea inhales deeply]
-[Darcy] That's a girl.
-Big breath in.
-[inhales deeply]
Good job. Well done.
Emma, can you go next door?
You can take that with you.
Yeah, off you go.
You go in that next room.
Good listening. Thank you.
If you have got
have you got some water?
Can you squeeze my finger?
Have you got some water?
Give me a squeeze.
Yeah, thought so. Awesome.
All right.
How you feeling?
There you are.
Hey, welcome back.
Would you like some water?
Can you stand up, sit up?
Come on. Up we get. Good girl.
-[Chelsea groaning]
-[Darcy] Thank you.
[Trace] You should have said.
You should have said.
[Chelsea] That's not
my water bottle.
[Darcy and Trace]
Oh, isn't it?
You normally have that colour.
-[Darcy] Sorry, dude.
-Yeah, it changes a lot.
Okay, where is it?
Where's your bag, miss?
Um, it's over there.
[Tracy] You all right,
darling?
So sorry. I'm just so, like,
like, it's way too much
for me.
I've had rehearsal
for three days, and, like,
a lot of these rehearsals
are now getting
so exhausted for me that
Yeah, it's a lot of work,
isn't it?
-Like, yeah.
-[Trace] Yeah.
[Chelsea] I just got a lot
on my plate right now
and stuff.
I don't know how
to finish it all.
-[Trace, sympathetically] Mm.
-[Chelsea] Yeah.
Don't know if I should
or just give up.
[Trace] Oh, absolute
Don't you dare give up.
-Never, ever give up.
-[Chelsea] Mm-hm.
No. Never, ever.
[gentle music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
[woman] Thank you.
Thanks very much.
-[Riley] No problem.
-Thanks, Riley. Ta.
[man] Um, I'll just
They're gonna find out
who the school captains are.
[woman] We've got a cord now.
[woman, muffled] We won't, um
[Andre] T-shirt is a bit dirty
so cover it with my jacket
so I'll look nice and clean
in case I do get it.
[girl] Oh,
I don't know about that.
[Josh] No,
this is the final call.
-[grunts]
-Oh, you nervous?
-[Josh] Yeah. There we go.
-Halle, um
[Andre] Nervous to be, really.
you guys, and they're all
but ready to go in here.
Are you all good to go?
[Josh] Yep. Yep.
Are you nervous about
the school captain?
[Darcy] All right,
I'll let everyone in then.
-Yeah.
-Me too.
Nervous, I'm a big
nervous wreck right now.
[Andre] Even if you got
even if you didn't get it, you
still gave it a shot, Halle.
[Darcy] Welcome, everyone.
I'm just going to
welcome you all
-What an awesome experience.
-[Andre] Yeah. Yeah.
It is. Even if you
didn't get it
[Darcy] We had some technical
difficulties, as always.
you still had a crack at it.
Especially when we wanted it
to work straight away.
But that's okay, we're on now.
So, I'm gonna head now
over to Lee,
I'm just gonna follow
you, mate.
Is there anything you wanna
say to get us started?
[Lee] Um, so, first off, uh,
just I'd like to send
a massive thank you
to our outgoing
school captains for 2022,
in Tamara, Thomas,
Elise and Jake.
Terrific job.
You've been great role models
for our
um, for our school.
Basically, we're gonna now,
um, announce
our school captains
for next year.
But first,
I need to thank the
everybody who nominated
to complete a speech
at assembly.
So, well done on getting up
in front of the whole school
and doing a speech.
I know it's a really
[silence]
Okay. That just froze.
[Josh groans]
[Andre] Yeah, that just froze.
How come we're still moving?
[Josh] Nah, it's lag.
-[Andre] Nah.
-Nah, it's their system.
[Andre] No, yeah.
How we gonna find out?
Darcy, our system's
just crashed.
[laughs]
At the time
he was gonna tell us.
[Andre laughs]
-Oh my God.
-Yeah, nah, you all
Um, all of you guys have
just frozen and
Yeah, and I'm glitching
on the screen.
[laughing]
Oh my God.
We're going into
that classroom.
-[Halle] I'm still going.
-[Andre] Yeah.
-Oh no.
-Oh, we're going
I'm glitching on the screen.
[laughs]
[Halle] No one's vanished
except for us.
[Josh] Smells a bit weird
in here, but okay.
[Halle] It always smells weird
in here.
Okay. Gonna head
back now to Lee
to announce our captains.
[gentle piano music playing]
Thanks, Darce.
So yeah, it gives me
great pleasure
to announce
our school captains for 2023.
And that's Halle Grant
and Andre Laurian McMahon.
-So, congratulations.
-[gasping]
-Yes!
-[Andre] Whoo-hoo!
-[Andre] Oh!
-[Halle] I made it.
-Ooh!
-[Halle laughing]
[Andre]
Skippy the Kangaroo here.
Please be careful.
[Halle] What is wrong
with this?
[Josh] You guys all right?
Sorry, we had we had a bit
of a glitch on our screens
so we had to move
to Secondary 10.
-It was
-[Andre] Yeah. And then
me just then nearly tripping
over the wire.
Clumsy me,
Skippy the Kangaroo.
I'm just dying of laughter
right now.
[Andre] Yeah.
Julie's coming!
[Andre] Geez.
-Congratulations, guys.
-[Halle squeals]
Well done.
I wish Auntie Irene was here
to see this.
-Julie, Julie.
-Yes?
That's just shown me how far
I've come to this point.
-Yes, it's
-I know.
[Halle] So, when do we exactly
get our badges?
-[machinery whirs]
-[indistinct student chatter]
-Oh!
-You're good, you're good.
[man] That's it. All the way.
Grip. And up.
Good job.
[Chelsea sighs]
[sawing sounds]
-[woman] Need a hand?
-Okay.
No worries.
[Chelsea]
I'm gonna sit down too.
[motor revving]
[lawnmower putters]
[Chelsea] I'm writing a speech
for the kids at the school.
Tough.
To be honest, the words
kind of just flow out.
But right now I'm like,
"What do I write?"
[loud mowing noises]
Jesus. Oh my God.
Tell him to turn that
frickin' machine off
or I'll do it for him.
-[Chelsea's mum chuckles]
-[Chelsea] Ugh.
Maybe I could put that
in the speech.
[Chelsea's mum] I'll read what
you have already written.
Okay?
And then you can think about
how to change it around.
-I might change it all around.
-Yeah, yeah.
[Chelsea's mum] Do you?
You could say,
"Welcome, everyone."
'Cause that's how you started
both of them.
It's a good start. Yeah?
[Chelsea] I'm nervous.
Breathe. You're all right.
Have some water.
[Chelsea exhaling]
-Hang on.
-I know.
Take some deep breaths.
[Chelsea] Exhale.
Deep breath. Ready? In.
[Chelsea breathes in
and exhales]
Next, another one.
[Chelsea breathes in
and exhales]
Another deep breath.
[Chelsea breathes deeply]
[gentle music playing]
Sit up.
Swallow what's in your mouth
before we continue.
And then you can put this
in the kitchen.
[chuckles]
[gentle music continues]
[Chelsea clears her throat]
[Chelsea reads]
Welcome, everyone.
Six months ago,
we were all so nervous
for our first auditions.
And now we're all nearly
at the end.
Throughout the last
six months,
we have overcome tonnes
of curveballs thrown at us.
We should all be so proud
of ourselves.
[voice fading]
[magpies warbling]
[Lori] Katie, Emma,
Benji, Jacqui, Ella, Halle,
Marcus, Shea, Josh and Elyse.
Yes, I know, she's not here.
So I, I'm not replacing Elyse
until I know
I absolutely have to.
[Darcy] Drum roll, dudes.
-We need a drum roll.
-[girl] Drum roll. Come on!
[indistinct chatter]
-[Lori] Look at it.
-[everyone gasps excitedly]
[Darcy] Whoo!
Halle did our excellent
artwork on the back,
so let's all give Halle
a big second clap.
[girl] Yeah, Halle.
[anticipatory music building]
So, this is the official
merchandise for the production
that I made.
And
and I absolutely love
how it all came out.
[anticipatory music
keeps building]
[funky music playing
over speakers]
[girl] Oh yeah!
[indistinct chatter]
[Lori] Good girl.
-[Darcy] Smoked. Are we good?
-[Lori] Are you ready?
All right. Josh, are you ready
for a surprise?
Sure am.
[Darcy] Now, Josh,
before today,
I've never held one of these
in my life.
So I don't know
what I'm doing,
so you're gonna have to
work it out for me, okay?
But
Keep your eyes closed
[Darcy laughs]
[Lori] Don't you open them.
-[Lori] That's it.
-All right.
Here they are in front of you.
-[Lori] There we go.
-Ready?
Hold your hands out.
Open your eyes.
-There you go.
-Oh, brilliant.
[laughs] Are you ready
to give them a go?
-We'll work it out.
-I've never Yeah.
[Darcy] But something
to look forward to. How good?
-Brilliant.
-Awesome.
-Are you excited?
-Yep.
[Darcy] Yeah. [laughter]
Okay, Australia.
Do yourselves a favour.
Get the album Whispering Jack.
It's a ripper.
Here's the song
you've all been waiting for.
John Farnham with
"You're The Voice".
[gentle music plays]
[Halle] I'm nervous because
I'm scared I'm gonna screw up.
Because I wanna try
and sing the song
for my aunt that passed away.
'Cause every time I listen to
"You're The Voice", it
I think it tells
to give people
a second chance
after they fail.
And I wanna sing it
to honour her
'cause there was something
that happened
that last time I saw her,
and I never got to say sorry.
So, I just wanted to
sing that song to honour her.
["You're The Voice" playing]
[beeping sound]
[Halle's grandma]
Like, as if David
had finished speaking to him
-five minutes ago
-[door opens]
-he knew exactly
-[door closes]
-You know, it was
-[Halle] Hello.
-[Halle's grandad] Hiya.
-[Halle] Hi.
Surprise. I didn't say
if they were here or not.
Hi, gorgeous girl.
Oh, I thought you might have
ignored my message.
-Hi, Grandma.
-No, I was tricking you.
-Hi, darling.
-[Halle] How are you?
[Halle's grandma]
I'm good. How are you?
I don't wanna hug you
too tight, but
-What for?
-Still But I miss you.
[Halle's grandma] Why aren't
you gonna hug me too tight?
[Halle, whispering]
'Cause you're fragile.
I'm not fragile.
[Halle's grandmother laughs]
I'm pretty good.
-Your turn.
-I'll sit up.
-Hey, Granddad.
-Hey, darling.
How are you going?
-I've got some news.
-Uh-huh.
We're finally able to
buy the tickets.
-[Halle] For the production.
-[Halle's mum] Production.
-[Halle's grandma] Wow.
-[Halle] Yep.
[Halle's grandma] It's
exciting. I'm really excited.
It's gonna be fun.
[Halle's mum] So,
Grandma doesn't really know
what it's about.
Do you wanna tell her?
Well, it's about
these three students
who are working on a project
about John Farnham.
-Right.
-But then they travel
back in time
to meet John Farnham
to learn the history
about him.
Oh, okay.
And tell grandma who you play.
[Halle] And I'm the '80s
John Farnham.
So, they travel from the '60s,
'70s, '80s, and '90s,
and I'm the '80s John Farnham.
'Cause that's when he was
on the show"Countdown"
and when his album
"Whispering Jack" came out.
Oh. That was
Auntie Irene's favourite.
-Did you know that?
-Yeah. I know that.
That's why I'm doing this.
-For Auntie Irene?
-I'm doing it
I'm doing it all
for Auntie Irene.
It's what she would have
wanted me to do.
[Halle's grandma]
She would. She would.
Do you think about her
when you're singing?
Yeah. All the time.
I even cried at one point
when I was talking about her.
Okay.
-I just
-That's that's okay.
I knew that it was
her favourite song and
Which song?
-"You're The Voice."
-Mm.
And I'm singing it for her
because of the last time
that I saw her.
[Halle's grandma] Mmm?
So she would know that
I'm sorry,
and then she would see how
what a woman I would become.
Yeah. She'll be there.
She'll be watching.
Oh, I'm gonna cry
when I get off the stage,
or after the finale.
-Why? Why do you think?
-Or on the way home.
'Cause then I'll be like,
"I finally did it,"
and she'll be proud.
Why wouldn't she?
Why wouldn't she be proud?
I [Halle cries]
[Halle's mum]
'Cause you know what?
One of the last things
she said to me,
and you need to listen,
was that she'd had
the best time ever
-[Halle] I know.
-with you.
-Okay?
-But
-[Halle's mum] I know. I know.
-I never got to
I never got to speak
to her afterwards.
[Halle's mum] But that's okay.
I got to speak to her,
and that's what she said.
She couldn't have
been prouder.
You remember I told you that
I spoke to Auntie I
[both sniffling]
and we talked about, um,
that she'd gone home,
that she'd had a good time
with you and your mum.
[Halle sniffs]
And then with your costumes,
you could even wear
one of her special necklaces
under your costumes,
if you want.
Yeah, I could.
[Halle's mum] Yeah?
I can organise that.
That'd be nice.
[Halle's mum] And then she'd
be with you on stage,
wouldn't she?
-Yeah.
-Auntie Irene loves you.
Tell Grandma what you said
to me about the chair.
-She loved you so much.
-I know she did.
-[Halle's mum] Hey.
-I know she did.
She loved you so much,
and she wasn't cross.
She didn't see that you were
-She was
-I even regret
the last time
I slept at her place.
Why?
Because I tried to sleep
in the single bed,
but I still had
sleeping anxiety.
-Yeah, but she wasn't cross.
-I had to force her
-to sleep with me in the room.
-No. She didn't
No, no, no.
You didn't force her.
Auntie Irene was
really happy to do that.
Tell Grandma what you said
about the chair.
I always make sure it doesn't
have any stuff on it
so she can sit there.
That's good. Mmm.
-It's good.
-[Halle sobs]
It's good. It's good.
-It's good.
-[Halle] It's okay?
We know that she'd like that,
don't we?
-[Halle] Yeah.
-[Halle's grandma] Okay?
And you'll do great
singing the song for her.
That will be just so
I hope I hope
she'll be able to see it.
She will. She will.
Hey. She will.
-[Halle] Okay.
-Okay? She will.
[Halle sniffling]
[poignant music]
[Halle's mother]
I think, um, Halle
harbours a lot of guilt
back then
because she was too young
to process
sort of what happened
at the time.
And the last time she saw her,
her and I were,
had had a fight
and it was a bad day
for her and I,
and it wasn't anything major.
It doesn't matter how much
you prepare yourself,
I think, you know,
huge losses like that
affect everybody in every way.
It doesn't matter how prepared
you think you are.
You know, and you heard
Halle say earlier,
"Oh, I wish I had have known
her as a grownup,"
and she would be so proud.
She would just be blown away
at this child
who was unable to
to process a lot of things
that were happening
in her world,
to now this young lady
who's ready to embark on
this journey of adulthood.
[Halle] That was Auntie Irene.
She would
She had brunette hair
before she got grey
and she was very lovely.
See how see how bad
my art was back then?
[Halle's mum chuckling]
Well, look how much
I've improved.
Look how much I've improved.
[gentle music playing]
[mooing]
[beeping sound]
[distant mooing]
[Chelsea] Oh God.
This is where it gets freaky.
Seeing the big stage.
[Darcy] Come
and take a seat, guys.
Come, move straight in.
Find yourself a spot.
[boy] Lori, where would
you like this?
-[Darcy] Okay.
-[Lori] On the stage.
[Darcy] We are gonna spend
a lot of time today
getting ourselves oriented
with the stage, all right?
We may need to try things
two, three times.
Even more, okay?
So don't get frustrated.
It's not your fault,
all right?
You're not doing
anything wrong.
We're just trying
to get it right.
All right. Does that make
sense to everyone?
-[scattered students] Yes.
-Okay. Excellent. All right.
[student] Those three seats
right there. That's ours.
[student]
Those three right there.
[Lori] All right.
-We shall start.
-[students chatting loudly]
-So, we need shh!
-[chatter quieting]
The script box is over here
I did remember it this time,
everybody.
[Halle] I don't need it.
[Lori] We don't need a script?
-I totally do.
-[girl] Want one?
-[Lori] Who? You don't.
-Hey, Lori!
You don't. I know you don't
because you
-[Andre] Lori?
-had this almost down pat.
Because of my accident,
I tend to forget sometimes.
-Poor thing.
-[Julie laughs]
[Lori] Shall we all
Poor Chelsea.
[Chelsea] I know.
I was only five
when it happened.
-[Lori] All right.
-[boy speaking indistinctly]
[Lori] Okay, all right.
Ready scene one, and
[Chelsea] Because
of my situation,
like, me getting hit by
the car and stuff,
I've always just
kind of wanted to,
you know, motivate people
because I've been through
so much.
And, yeah, people tell me,
"This is what you're
meant to do."
[Lori] All right, now,
Chelsea's
Chelsea's written something
she'd like to read
to everybody.
We're gonna listen
really, really nicely
and be a good audience.
Thank you.
God, this is so
nerve-wracking.
-Do I start?
-[Darcy] Yep.
Welcome, everyone.
Six months ago,
we were all so nervous
for our first auditions.
And now, we're all nearly
at the finish line.
This has been
an awesome experience.
Throughout
the last six months,
we have all overcome
tonnes of curveballs
thrown at us.
And I'm so excited to be
standing on stage
with all of you.
All the hard emotions
and feelings,
the nerves we have now,
will all be worth it.
So, I say
we step on that stage
and we have
the time of our lives.
You're the voice.
I'm the voice.
We're all the voice.
Chelsea out.
[applause and cheering]
[Chelsea] I really want people
to kind of recognise me
as a person who didn't think
that she could do it
because of all her problems
and be like,
"You know, she did it."
I feel like you can conquer
any situation
if you put your mind to it.
Sure, we can
start it together.
I guess we have to.
All right. See you at
Okay, then.
See you at my my house.
[Lori] Be careful.
That's it, good girl.
-[Chelsea] I did it.
-Well done.
[gentle music playing]
[distant plane roars]
[Josh's grandma] What sort of
aircraft was that one, Josh?
A Boeing 737-800.
Okay. How was your day today
at school?
-Yeah. It went well.
-Did it?
-We went over our scripts.
-Yeah. Yep.
We went over our, um
where we had to be and that
on the stage.
[Josh's grandma] Right.
-[plane roars]
-[Josh] There we go.
-What's this one?
-Oh, what's this one?
-Oh, look at that.
-[Josh] Air New Zealand.
[Josh's mum] Air New Zealand?
-That's huge.
-Look at that.
Oh, gosh, that's gorgeous.
Was that a A37, Josh?
No, that's an A321, so
-An A321?
-Yeah.
I didn't know there was A321s.
-[Josh's grandma] And, um
-[Josh] Yeah?
You've got Cadets
tomorrow night.
Yes. So, um,
we've got the new recruit
intake coming in now.
-Yep.
-[Josh] In six months,
I hope to
get on the Sergeants
Promotion Course.
-Right.
-So, once I leave Cadets,
I'll go into the
Royal Australian Air Force
and hopefully become
a fast jet pilot.
So, what would plan B be
if if it didn't quite
work out
to the way that you thought?
Well, I would still stick with
Defence no matter what.
Yeah. Yep.
Because it's
there's always going
to be a job there.
-Yeah.
-And
if they see that
you've got the skills
for a particular area
which would be
more suited to you,
they'll point you into
that area of, "Oh."
-"Well, we"
-Here we go. Sorry.
-[plane roars]
-Oh, sorry.
Oh, wow. What's that, Josh?
[Josh] Another 737.
[plane roars by overhead]
-Wow, look at that.
-So, pretty much
That is beautiful.
[Josh] No matter whatever
happens, you have to try.
-You can't just give up or
-That's right.
say, "Oh, this is too hard."
-I mean
-Yeah.
We're all different. We all
-That's right.
-have our strengths.
-Weaknesses.
-[Josh's grandma] Yeah.
[Josh's mum] And I guess
in life you're going to have
a few hit and misses,
but I don't see that
being a problem.
-[Josh] No.
-And
you were
a very quiet little boy
and to see that little boy
blossom into the beautiful man
that you've become
Mmm.
And I'm so glad that,
you know, how
You turned out pretty good,
I reckon, Josh.
-Yep. You did.
-We're very proud.
Not pretty good.
I think pretty darn brilliant.
Oh, all right.
-All right. Cheeky, cheeky.
-And you got a really lovely
You know, you've got a really
lovely road ahead of you.
[gentle music plays]
[distant plane roaring]
[indistinct student chatter]
[gentle music
continues playing]
[indistinct chatter]
Hey.
Just act natural.
Hey. [laughs]
Hi.
[Halle] Hi, girl.
[gentle music continues,
birds singing]
[indistinct chatter]
[indistinct chatter]
I hate you so much.
[laughter, indistinct chatter]
[Halle] So, Cal, do I get my
makeup done, or?
[woman] Yeah, 'cause you're
the main character
in the main scene.
[Halle] Are you nervous
or excited?
Oh, puns intended
and dad jokes,
um, yeah,
I'm egg-cited. Ha!
[Halle] Hm. Egg-cited,
of course.
Is your family coming
to the production?
Yeah. I have my sister,
my mum, my dad,
and even my sister's boyfriend
and my nan are coming.
-[Halle] Oh, that's nice.
-Yeah.
[Halle] Well,
thank you for your time.
Thank you, Halle.
And thank you
for your time as well.
You're welcome.
[clicks]
[music fading to silence]
[gentle music playing]
[Darcy] All right.
[Darcy hums]
-[drums beat on the door]
-[indistinct chatter]
All right, lads.
Any of our guys
wearing microphones
that have already been
plugged in and set up,
can you please follow me
to the stage
if you are not
doing anything else,
and we'll just do
a quick soundcheck.
[indistinct chatter]
[indistinct chatter, laughter]
-Hi.
-You're a wriggler.
[Chelsea]
I am totally a wriggler.
You're totally a wriggler.
Do you want mascara
or just lippy?
-Yes, please.
-Mascara too.
Do you want me to lift up
my hair?
The wig?
Okay. This is for you.
[sprays]
[Halle] Well, I'm wearing
my Auntie Irene's necklace
and I'm also wearing
her perfume tonight,
just so she's there with me.
[Halle, quietly]
Okay. Here we go.
I can do this.
-[gentle music playing]
-[indistinct chatter]
[Darcy] Girls, are we excited?
-Yes.
-[girl, playfully] No!
[Darcy] Have fun.
This is the last time
we'll ever do this,
so make sure
you enjoy yourselves.
Be very proud of yourself
and we'll have
a big celebration
at the end, okay?
Yeah, can.
[magical music playing]
[woman laughing]
[Darcy] How you going? Good?
[Darcy] Welcome, Elyse.
Welcome.
-[Lori] Hey, Elise.
-[Chelsea] Hi.
Oh my God. Yay!
[Elyse] You missed me,
didn't you?
-Yes.
-Happy for me to be back?
[Chelsea] It's exciting.
[Elyse] I was really happy.
I literally was crying,
knowing that I'd be able to
make it to the production.
Gonna be great,
knowing out there
I've got family
that I know
that's watching me,
and they're gonna be
proud of me.
[Elyse's mum] It's just
such a huge thing,
like, you know,
three weeks ago,
she couldn't even walk.
[Elyse's dad] She was
very optimistic,
even when she was
really, really sick.
She was just like,
"Nup, I need to get better
so I can get to the show."
[chuckles]
[gentle music playing]
[upbeat music playing]
[Darcy] Sound works.
[indistinct chatter]
Yeah. It's actually now
the real deal.
It's no longer in front of
our, you know, peers.
[boy] Yeah, no, like,
in front of, like,
the students
and all that stuff.
[Josh] Like
[boy] It's like, this is
actually the real thing.
And so, we're going to get
proper, you know, clapping.
[whispering] Five minutes.
Five minute call.
I'm calm.
I'm not panicking anymore.
I'm calm.
-[anticipatory music building]
-[student] All right.
-Here we go. Here we go.
-[Darcy] Let's do it.
[indistinct chatter]
[man] Uh-oh.
[woman, softly] Let's go.
Second row.
There you go.
[anticipatory music
keeps building]
Yeah, awesome.
Very excited.
Ooh, Mum, I'm nervous.
I'm nervous.
[anticipatory music
keeps building]
[indistinct chatter]
[student] Okay, let's go.
[anticipatory music
keeps building]
[Chelsea] I can't remember
my lines.
Shh.
I am so terrified.
Are you nervous?
I'm terrified.
[Darcy] All right. Doors shut.
Um, fade your lights.
Fade everything back.
Good luck, guys. Break a leg.
All right.
Into position, folks.
Go, team.
[silence]
[school bell rings]
[applause]
[gentle music playing]
-Hello.
-Hey.
G'day.
[Chelsea] Can you believe
what Darcy wants us to do?
It sounds like so much work.
It's like us he wants us
to learn or something.
We have to do a presentation
about John Farmhouse?
Do we even know any of his
songs, for goodness' sake?
[Adelaide] I know.
He can't be any good
if it's that old.
[Andre] Did they even have
music in the 1960s?
[audience laughs]
[Chelsea] It might have
been when those
black things were invented?
What were they called?
Records?
[audience laughs]
[Josh] A lot of people
underestimate people
with a disability
and what I actually hope
for this show to achieve
is that saying, "Hey,
you don't give us
enough credit
for what we actually can do."
[Chelsea] I don't understand.
What is happening?
Where are we?
Maybe we've all fallen asleep
and, huh, we're dreaming.
[Chelsea] Um, I'm sorry.
But even if we have all
just fallen asleep
and are dreaming
[audience claps, laughs]
-[Chelsea] It's John Phantom.
-[Andre] Farnham.
[Adelaide] Let's just
play it cool.
["Sadie The Cleaning Lady"
begins playing]
Sadie the cleaning lady
With trusty scrubbing brush
and pail of water
Worked her fingers
to the bone
For the life
she had at home
[man] Morgan, you're clear.
You can cue up.
Oh, scrub your floors
Do your chores
Dear old Sadie
Looks as though you'll
always be a cleaning lady
[audience applauds, cheering]
I hope you enjoyed the show.
[Andre] Hey,
I have a crazy idea.
[Chelsea, Adelaide] Okay.
Do you know how we went
to the 1960s,
from a song from then?
[Adelaide] Yeah.
[Andre] What if we do
the same thing,
just '70s, '80s, and '90s?
["Raindrops Keep Fallin On My
Head" by John Farnham plays]
Raindrops keep falling
on my head
Oh, but that doesn't
mean my eyes
Will soon be turning red
Crying's not for me
'Cause I'm never gonna stop
the rain by complaining
Because I'm free
Nothing's worrying me
[audience cheers]
[Elyse's mum
speaking indistinctly]
[Elyse's dad] Never, ever
thought I'd see her do that.
-[woman] You mean dance?
-[Elyse's dad] Yeah. Amazing.
[Elyse] I'm really
proud of myself.
The fact that I actually
got out there on stage
with actually
having no seizures,
that's a big step for me.
Before, I couldn't even
get on stage
even with my classmates.
And now the fact that I'm
on stage with classmates
and people that I don't know
is extraordinary.
[Andre] Sounds good.
Anything else?
Well, I know that you will
absolutely,
with a cherry on top,
love the mullet.
['70s Farnham]
Mullet? What is that?
[Chelsea] It is a hairstyle
you will absolutely love.
Okay, I need to go. Good
talking to you. See ya.
[Chelsea] See you, dude.
[audience applauds]
Okay. I think it's time
to go back now.
[audience applauds]
I think so far
we've gone past halfway,
so, um, we've all
gone pretty well.
So, nothing's gone wrong yet.
I mean, there's one more scene
after this and
But, look, I think
we've all nailed it tonight.
Do we think
we should tell anyone?
No way.
No one will believe us.
[Andre replies indistinctly]
[Halle, quietly]
I need to get through.
-Do I get the mic?
-[woman] Yes. Let's go.
What is in this?
No idea.
-[Andre] Have a look.
-[Chelsea] We should look.
[Halle, whispering]
Do I sit in the chair?
[Chelsea]
It looks like a radio.
Do they fish with that?
-Honestly. Seriously.
-[audience laughs]
[audience applauds]
[audience laughs]
[Adelaide] Uh,
where did we turn up?
Are those TV cameras?
I think this is the show
"Countdown".
[Halle] Hey, I know you guys.
Wow, you really are
time travellers.
Go over there and
I'll meet you after my song.
[Andre] Okay.
["You're The Voice"
by John Farnham starts]
[audience cheering]
We have the chance to
turn the pages over
We can write
what we want to write
We gotta make ends meet
before we get much older
We're all
someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look
at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You're the voice
Try and understand it
Make a noise
and make it clear
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
We're not gonna
sit in silence
We're not gonna
live with fear
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
[bagpipes playing]
Ooh, we're all
someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we
look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?
You're the voice
Try and understand it
Make a noise
and make it clear
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
We're not gonna
sit in silence
We're not gonna
live with fear
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
You're the voice
Try and understand it
Make a noise
and make it clear
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
We're not gonna
sit in silence
And we're not gonna
live with fear
Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
[song ends, audience cheering]
[gentle music playing]
[Halle] Finally done it.
I feel relieved
after all of that.
I felt so much anxiety
just pushing through it.
But I pushed through it
as best I could,
through my anxiety
that I was having.
But, thankfully,
I got through it and I did it.
And I saw my family in there.
They were so kind
and loving to come see me.
And I'm so happy
of how this turned out.
And I know that
my friends and family
will be proud of me.
But more importantly,
I need to be proud of myself
and love myself for who I am
because I know that
I can do it.
[audience cheers]
[students cheering]
[girl] Well done, Chelsea.
[Josh] Well done, mate.
[Halle] Come here. Bring it
in, you two. Bring it in.
Oh, you can't just hug them.
[Adelaide] We did it.
I'm going to hug everyone
in my class.
[feel-good music playing]
-We're the best.
-We're the best.
[Chelsea] At the end of this
amazing experience,
I'm so proud.
[woman] You did brilliant.
[Chelsea] Because high school
isn't all about, you know,
just reading
and maths and stuff.
-It's about
-[Darcy] See you, guys.
those days
of living your lives
and feeling like you can act
the way you are
in front of people
and not be ashamed
to say what you think.
You know, we feel like
we need to be something,
but we actually
have to be just ourselves.
[feel-good music playing]
[music slowly fading]
[gentle music playing]
[Halle] Anyone
can hold a camera.
[Andre] Halle, do you have
any, um, final thoughts?
Well, I feel like I've done
what I needed to do
and I finally did the goal
that I needed to do
for Auntie Irene.
I've finally done it,
and you know what?
I think the show's really
helped me move on from her.
Like, every time I hear
"You're The Voice" I cry,
but now, I don't
so much anymore.
I don't cry
as much as I used to
and I think it's helped me
move on pretty well. Hi.
Um, I I just gotta say,
it has made me feel
more confident
about myself and, um,
talking, talking
in a big crowd now,
I'm more confident about it.
It kind of helped me, like,
realise more about my career
that I wanna do
after high school.
[Adelaide] My favourite thing
from the production
was you being so funny
without the script.
[laughter, indistinct chatter]
Hey, wait for me. Wait.
Where's you? Where's you?
[man] Um
[boy] You have to lean
your head in a bit.
[indistinct chatter]
There.
Well, let's, let's say we
Let's say it ended well
and we're proud
of what we all did.
[Chelsea] And don't worry,
you can always find
a Chelsea anywhere.
And I hope everyone
has enjoyed
this experience on TV.
And, and I hope everyone is,
um, inspired by what we've
by what we've all said.
And don't swear
until you're 20, kids.
[gentle music playing]
[music fading]
