Vini Jr. (2025) Movie Script
1
[tense music playing]
[distant clattering]
[Vini] I've been playing soccer
since I can remember.
It's what I enjoy the most.
On vacation, I play soccer.
At home, I'm playing soccer video games.
When I'm on my phone, I'm watching soccer.
Everything I know is from soccer.
And the most important things I've learned
have come from soccer.
Building character, connecting with fans
Soccer gives you all of that.
[crowd chanting, cheering]
Without the fans,
it's a whole different stadium. [laughs]
Ah!
I don't know how to describe it.
What can I say? It's my home.
I feel more at home here than I do
in my house.
[crowd roaring]
[bright, rhythmic music playing]
[crowd chanting]
[bright, rhythmic music intensifies]
For me, he's the number one.
There are other players.
But the determining factor is Vinicius.
[crowd roaring]
When he has the ball, he's so fierce,
so determined to get past his man,
and he's so direct to go for goal.
[crowd cheering]
[bright, rhythmic music continues]
[crowd roaring]
[man 1] The way Vini plays is fun,
full of dribbling,
and always looking
to take players one-on-one.
[crowd roaring]
On the field, he's electric.
Off the field, he's pure joy.
[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
Our rivals know
that he's a player to to to watch out
because he can destroy you
in any in any moment of the game.
[man 2] Down there, it's like
a pickup game. Nothing intimidates him.
-[upbeat music continues]
-[no audible speech]
If you mark him closely,
he'll use his body.
If you mark him from afar,
he'll destroy you.
[Vini shouts]
[man 2] How many fouls
have been committed against him
that VAR didn't call?
How many times
have they nearly broken his leg?
An injury is the worst thing in the world.
That's when you have to train harder,
work harder, and you can't even play.
[dramatic music playing]
[man 3] Switch!
Vinicius doesn't require any rest.
Because physically, he's a machine.
[woman 3] Vini's story's very different
from any other players.
All the adversity has made him stronger.
[woman 2] And he never gave up.
He never did.
[man 4] He doesn't have what it takes
to play in Real Madrid's attack.
[announcer] Vinicius Junior is
the 2017 version of Negueba.
I was criticized so heavily,
and I obviously wasn't prepared for it.
[man 5] Pressure on Vinicius was there
from the moment
he began playing professionally
and there were racist
attacks from day one.
[crowd chanting] Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!
Monkey! Monkey! Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!
[woman 2] I began seeing pictures of him.
And I wasn't there to hug my son.
What could I do when I saw
the footage of him crying
and looking up at the sky?
[man 6] What can I say to Vini
in that moment?
What can we do
other than fight the way he's fighting,
standing his ground, speaking out?
[man 5] Having gone through
everything he has,
for me, that's
what sets Vinicius apart his resilience.
I made it out of a neighborhood in Brazil
where you either become
a criminal, or you
have to work really hard to
[crying]
[intense, rhythmic music playing]
[crowd roaring]
VINI JR.
And the Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year
is
Vinicius Junior!
Congratulations.
[dramatic music playing]
I don't even know where where to begin.
Because this reality was so distant,
it just seemed impossible to get here.
I never dreamt of being
the best player in the world.
That I could possibly make it this far
and be put onto the same list
as all idols I grew up watching on TV.
It seemed impossible,
but when you get to Real Madrid,
you realize anything is possible.
7 YEARS EARLIER
[funky music playing]
Today, we're here
to introduce Vinicius Junior,
who is the greatest hope
for the future of soccer in Brazil.
[reporter] Vinicius Junior was officially
introduced by Real Madrid,
with the backing
of President Florentino Prez.
I'm ready to sacrifice a lot to show
that I deserve this opportunity.
Sacrifice isn't anything new in my life.
I come from a very humble family
which I'm very proud of
because of all they have done for me.
[announcer shouting indistinctly]
[camera clicking]
And wearing number 28 Vinicius!
Real Madrid invested
45 million euros in Vinicius Junior.
[Vini] I used to think like a kid.
Real buying me for 45 million
was something I'd never imagined.
And once you get here,
there's the pressure and also
all the things people
are saying about you online.
You have to forget that
you cost that much.
[crowd clamoring]
[crowd roars]
I moved up really young.
So the difference in physical strength
was absolutely unreal.
I'd try to dribble and it seemed like
they were taking the ball from a child.
[man] In Brazil,
the game was a bit slower.
Here, the ball moved very quickly
and they marked me really tightly.
I didn't have
time to control it or even think.
You end up not being yourself at first.
I wasn't able to play
the way I did in Brazil when I got here.
Of course everybody wanted him to
become an extraordinary, fantastic player
from the minute he set foot in Europe.
But the truth is, that takes time.
It requires lots of work,
practice and adapting.
[crowd clamoring]
[Vini] It's the highs and lows, right?
The high of training every day
with the greatest players
and and the low of not being
at their level yet, and having to play.
Remember what you said during
your first training sessions?
-Yeah.
-"Oh, I think I"
"I don't think I'm qualified
to play with them."
[man 2] When Vini first got here, it was
very clear that he was a skilled player.
but his talent
still needed some refinement.
I mean, he was a young kid
who was superfast and great at dribbling.
But his shooting wasn't as good at first.
And once he got close to the goal,
his nerves would kick in
and affect his ability to score.
And he'd make the wrong decisions.
So when he had to shoot, he'd pass.
And when he should've passed,
he'd dribble instead.
[announcer 1] He can't shoot,
and he plays for Real Madrid!
[announcer 2] It was clear he had
an issue with decisiveness.
[announcer 3] That's why his name is
coming up in the transfer market.
Real Madrid is considering
loaning him to Arsenal or Liverpool.
You have to show up prepared,
if you don't do well, game over.
There are other players out there,
ready to take your spot.
He can't score.
-Vinicius Junior?
-Useless.
I came like this
because Vinicius runs a lot,
does bicycles, and then
swims around doing nothing. [laughs]
I was very young,
and people on the outside had no idea.
Everyone just assumes
that you're prepared enough
to handle all that criticism.
[man 3] I think that family and friends
can work as a network
of affection of sorts.
It's a way of bringing
comfort along with you
to a place where everything's gonna be
quite tough to navigate,
at least in the beginning.
[woman 1] He brought his parents,
his siblings,
and two friends that he felt
he needed there with him.
He wanted to bring five.
And his dad said, "Five's impossible!"
"There's no way."
So that's when he chose
Menegate and Wesley to come here with him.
[Wesley] When he told me, I was like,
"No way, man. Are you for real?"
And I started thinking about
how it'd even be like, you know?
'Cause this was all brand new to us,
and we were so young.
[laughing]
[laughing]
[teacher] Where is your vacation?
-Mykonos.
-Mykonos
Italy.
-Sardinia.
-And Sardinia.
Sardinia.
[teacher] Okay. Together.
-Togedinho.
-Togedinho.
-Togedinho!
-Togedinho.
[all laughing]
When we were around 14 or 15,
we'd all go out
in a group of five with ten reais.
I wonder how we managed to go out
with just ten reais
and spend the entire night
holding the same can of
Pepsi or whatever it was,
so people would think
that we were drinking all night long,
when actually, it was gone
in the first hour of the party.
Menegate, Felipe and I had
many moments like this together.
And that's the reason why
they're here with me today.
[funky music playing]
20TH BIRTHDAY
Congratulations to you
Congratulations, on this special day
Lots of happiness, many years of life
Many years of life
Congratulations!
Is this fruit?
-What?
-Is it fruit?
What were you expecting
this early in the morning?
[man] When she asked
what we should bring you for breakfast,
I thought You wanted a burger?
-Yeah? What did you expect?
-I want chocolate or something!
How many players have the courage
to create this kind of structure?
Even earning what Vini earns?
In fact, Vini is a business.
With a whole bunch of employees. Tons.
I'm Vini's "no" man.
Douglo, no cell phones now.
Step aside now,
'cause things are about to get serious.
Okay. Thanks. See you.
Knowing the time to cut a dinner short
'cause Vini has a set bedtime.
I kinda do it all.
It's a full-spectrum job.
From being on the red carpet
to cleaning a bathroom, if needed.
I'm here to do whatever needs doing.
[crowd roars]
Good evening! Good evening, everybody!
Good evening, Madrid!
I saw you today, man.
People wanna see you too.
-Did you like it?
-Man, I was going, "Ooh!" [laughs]
[all laugh]
[Felipe] We left Whindersson's show.
I was driving the Audi
and Vini was in the passenger seat.
-[tense music playing]
-[siren wailing]
[Felipe] Should we pull over?
An officer stops us for no reason.
"Hands on the hood."
"Turn off the car."
Meanwhile, Vini is in the passenger seat.
So, then I ask the guy,
"Hey man,
I'm sorry, but I wasn't going fast."
"Why'd you pull us over?"
"This type of car is used in robberies
and there are suspicious people inside."
There weren't suspicious people.
There were Black people
in an expensive car. You know?
For them, Black people can't be
in expensive cars.
[announcer] Welcome to
the Second Division derby,
game number two
[woman] Real Madrid decides he trains
with the A team, but plays on the B team.
First, our youth teams
go play in Castilla,
in order to learn and understand
how to better adapt to the club's culture,
its identity and behavior.
You're playing well. Go to the B team.
Playing great? To the A team.
Are you gonna play?
You're not. You're benched.
Then you start feeling deflated,
because you barely play.
When you think you're gonna play,
someone else gets to play instead.
When you first come in, you see the level.
There's your own mental barrier
that you have to be at that level,
and that can be difficult, you know.
And for Vini, obviously,
I know it took a little bit more time
because his, probably,
style of play is different,
but it says a lot about
his mental strength and his personality
that he can take
those setbacks and then still turn into
one of the best players in the world.
[reporter] In July 2018,
he began the season at Real Madrid.
After the arrival of Solari,
Vinicius Junior has had many opportunities
to play in the first team.
[Vini] Because he's also South American,
you know?
Solari's from Argentina. He knows
how hard it is to leave Argentina
and come play here in Spain.
[woman] And he made the most
of every second Solari gave him.
So that was when Vinicius
had his first big breakthrough.
He was filling a gap
Real Madrid had at that moment.
Because he's the kind of player
that plays with joy.
He looks at the crowd
with a smile on his face,
And it makes them say, "We want you here."
[crowd roars]
They qualify for the round of 16
of the Champions League.
First game's in Holland.
Vini owns the game.
He gives Benzema an assist.
Real Madrid wins 2-1. They go home.
They're the current
three-time Champions League winners.
No one's worried.
[announcer] Good ball from Modri.
Nice pass from Benzema.
Modri to Vinicius Junior,
now he's one-on-one!
Vinicius Junior pushes it forward!
Vinicius Junior keeps hold of the ball,
kicks it, but the ball hits
the side-netting!
Ho-ho! He felt that.
[tense music playing]
And we're now seeing
Vinicius Junior limping off the field.
It feels like the wave of bad news
just keeps on piling up for Real Madrid!
[Vini] It was all very upsetting,
you know?
'Cause we were being eliminated
from the tournament,
which was the one
that mattered the most to us.
And on top of that,
I got injured and would have to be out
for like, two months without playing.
I'd never been injured before.
The second Vini was injured
I called Thiago.
-I know that--
-I play pickup games all the time!
I go out and play and never get hurt!
-But here I get injured?
-No. Listen.
-Without the ball.
-It's not about that.
-It's about activating your body to play.
-It was already activated!
-You were sitting!
-But it's up here!
-We were together.
-It's all right here.
I know it is! Come on.
Let's do this. Really quick.
Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Stop.
Thirty-five. You spent a long time in
[Vini] I knew you were
gonna say that again.
The first two rounds I did, I crushed it.
No, the first two were high.
You'll see it in the video.
-[Wesley] Seriously?
-I know. He's the only one doing this.
-[Thiago] No, it's--
-Him and airplane pilots. Am I a pilot?
-Come on.
-[Thiago] The focus is performance.
But also, injury prevention.
There's an indicator that shows that
if you reach a pilot's level,
you have a much lower chance of injury.
I guess I'll be flying a plane soon.
What about the ball? Nowhere in sight.
[Thiago] When I got here,
he was obviously upset.
But I didn't find someone
that was defeated.
I found someone who was
very determined to get through it.
[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
[Thiago] Four, five, six,
seven, eight, nine, ten!
Okay, take a break.
[exhaling]
[Tati] That injury was absolutely crucial.
It made Vini come to the realization
that his body is a machine.
[Thiago] Hold it! Three! Four!
[Tati] He starts
taking better care of himself.
[beeping]
[Thiago] Go, go, go. Harder, harder,
harder, harder, harder, harder!
Come on. There! Good, good, good, good!
Good, Vini. Very good.
[panting]
[reporter] After two months,
Vinicius will play again for Real Madrid,
despite being injured
during that fateful game.
He'll return with three games remaining.
[Vini] Then, Zidane arrives.
-And it was back to square one again.
-[man] One.
[Vini] New coach, new year.
And Rodrygo had a great start.
He scored on his first game.
With him playing, there were now
three of us in the same position.
Me, Hazard, and Rodrygo.
The change at the moment is
that there are other important players,
And I have to choose.
It's my role and that's
not gonna change.
It's definitely one of
Vini's hardest seasons because
he played less,
he had less time on the field,
and when a player isn't playing,
the first thing to go is his confidence.
[delicate, somber music playing]
[man] I remember seeing him
checking his phone, and
kind of tossing it
on the rug on the floor,
and just lying there, watching TV,
staring at nothing.
Then we knew he hadn't made the roster.
When I got here,
he was already with Zidane.
In that first year,
what I was filming was
a completely different reality from today.
We'd be there in the house
waiting for Friday to come
so we could see the roster.
And when it came out and he was
on the bench, we'd celebrate!
We had no idea if he was gonna play.
[Vini] I wasn't scoring many goals,
and every day I'd ask
to practice finishing.
He was there with me every day.
-He was the one who convinced you to mark.
-He'd always get me to mark, to defend.
He showed me videos to convince me
that that's what I had to do.
All that decision-making
was important for him as a young player
to understand what to do, when,
in which position,
and what space into the pitch.
That entire period with Zidane
also really helped him
toughen up, you know?
And build up some resilience.
He was heavily criticized.
There was that chat
with Benzema, saying, "Hey, man."
"Don't pass to him,
because he's playing against us."
[tense music playing]
[Benzema] He just does whatever he wants.
And he never sees a through ball.
Bro, don't play to him.
Today, we have to be
very respectful to everyone
because any silly thing you say or do
will get you in trouble.
Many things are said on the field.
And that's where they should stay.
You know, ultimately,
we're a team, we're a unit.
And I believe our energy is
actually needed
for other things.
That's the kind of stuff
that happens in soccer.
It's normal. It's nothing horrible.
He's like my little brother,
so I can say that to him.
It's normal. In my opinion,
he didn't play well enough in that game.
But it's not like I'm really mad at him.
I'm mad about what he's doing on the field
because I know what he's capable of.
He came over to talk to me.
And he said that he
he said those things
because he was hotheaded and
he wanted to help me
to be more useful for the team,
because he was aware of my potential.
From day one, he's been the guy
who's helped me the most.
When we start a match,
I just know we're gonna make a difference
because we play off of each other.
And that's very important,
for us to have chemistry on the field,
And in the end, it all worked out,
because after that conversation
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 1] Vinicius facing up to Semedo
once again tonight.
Benzema.
Vinicius passes to Kroos.
Benzema shows up for it.
Vinicius finds some space
and receives the ball from Kroos.
Vinicius Vinicius Goal!
For Madrird!
Goal!
Vinicius!
[funky music playing]
[announcer 2] Did you see that?
What a kick from Vinicius!
[announcer 3 in Portuguese] Precision
pass, brilliant first touch! Vinicius!
He's at his mark.
What a goal!
[players clamoring]
[in English] He's helping us.
So, at the end of the day
and he's also an entertainer
because you pay ticket to see him play.
Come on, Vini!
Three today, Vini. Three.
Go Vini! Go!
-[man 1] Vinicius!
-[man 2] Come on!
[announcer 1] What a show!
Vini's unstoppable!
Just look at him go!
[announcer 2] From the very start,
you can tell
that Vini's game is pure street.
[kids chattering]
[Fernando] That's his style.
It's bold, it's daring, it's fun.
He's not afraid to go for it, to dribble
He's unique. He's different.
He's brought his street soccer style
into professional soccer.
[mellow electronic music playing]
34KM FROM RIO DE JANEIRO
[Vini] Anything goes here,
there's no responsibility.
Here, I kicked the ball against the wall
to learn control and to use my left foot.
I learned some dribbling
that I'd seen on YouTube.
I'd watch Neymar, Ronaldinho,
and I'd always try the moves out
against my friends.
In order to describe
everything that I've lived,
everything that all Brazilians
living in favelas have to go through,
I'd suggest going there for a day
to see what it's like.
And to try living
with eight people in a house
that has only one bedroom.
[gentle music playing]
[Fernanda] I had Vini really young.
I was 18 at the time.
Soccer's always been his thing.
As long as he had his ball,
could be a soda cap or whatever it was,
he'd always be playing with it.
He never caused any trouble.
He was with me all the time,
he always slept by my side.
Every single day, until he was 16.
She took up half the bed
and I was left with a tiny little corner
where I'd sleep every night, and
she's always been
a very important person in my life.
When my dad died,
he was about to retire.
He'd always say, "I'm gonna retire
and watch my grandson play for Flamengo."
I guess we inherited that dream.
[Vini] My biggest dream
was to play for Flamengo.
Because I'd cry over Flamengo
when I was a kid.
FLA YOUTH SCHOOL
FLA CUP 2012
[woman] He was about five or six years old
when he got here.
And just like many other kids,
he had dreams of becoming a soccer player.
Vini was always looking for the ball.
He'd keep it all day if you'd let him.
He was always very quiet and calm.
The minute he set foot on the field,
he was an entirely different kid.
There, he would completely let loose.
He was an untamed lion on the field.
Once he was on the field,
he'd just complain and fight.
[tense, energetic music playing]
[crowd clamoring]
[Douglonez] When he steps onto the field,
he feels everything.
If anger shows up, he'll feel it,
and he'll for sure let it out.
I'd say Vini is my laid-back persona,
and Malvadeza is
when I'm a lot more turned up.
[announcer 1] Vini drives at speed
for the first time What?!
The referee points for a goal kick
and gives him a yellow card.
[announcer 2] Vinicius Junior is
pressuring them. He's getting in closer,
but he can't stay there.
When he sees someone giving him
an opening to get inside their head,
he'll annihilate them.
I don't get paid to be nice.
I get paid to get out there and score.
[crowd clamoring]
[no audible speech]
[blowing whistle]
[no audible speech]
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 3] Vini is talking
a whole lot out there!
I've always said to him,
"Don't talk to the referee or the crowd."
"You need to resolve things on the field."
I've also told Vini,
"Don't stop
if the ref doesn't blow the whistle."
There's no point in stopping and waiting
for the referee to whistle
if he doesn't think
that you've been fouled.
We don't want him
talking to the ref all the time.
We want to see him
playing like he can play,
and that's what we all enjoy.
-[energetic music playing]
-[crowd cheering]
[announcer] Vinicius Junior!
He pushes it! Here comes Vini!
Goal!
[Vini] Here I am,
best player of the match trophy.
And I'm very happy about it.
[crowd cheering]
[crowd roaring]
He's always been like that.
He dances, he's playful.
-["20 Minutinhos Pisto" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[Vini] I've danced since I was a kid.
Every time there was a party in my hood,
there also was a dancing competition.
Even though I've always been shy,
I would go up on the stage.
I really admire Vinicius,
because I also grew up dancing.
It's something I love,
but I've never had the nerve to do it
'cause I was
afraid of what people would say.
People are used to seeing Vini
during games.
They see the exceptional player
that he is, the star, right?
But in the locker room and in the hallway,
he's the guy who always
makes us smile every single day.
[players shouting joyfully]
[announcer] Here we go. It's dance time!
Moving in all directions.
[man 1] He is from Brazil,
and Brazilians like to have fun.
So I would characterize him
as a joyful guy.
The joyful way that we celebrate
isn't even Vini's.
Neymar and Ronaldinho did it before.
[man 2] Vini wasn't the first player
to ever dance.
Maybe the thousandth.
Brazilians, Africans, and that's where
all the prejudice we have here stems from.
If you want to dance samba,
go to the Sambadrome in Brazil.
But here, you have to
respect your colleagues
and stop acting like a monkey.
What I'm trying
The first big statement Vini ever made
came when he was discussed on a talk show.
Some guy said that he needed
to quit acting like he was a monkey.
[reporter 1] The soccer world responds
after Vinicius Junior is
the target of racism.
[reporter 2] Vinicius Junior found support
on social media
with the hashtag "#BailaViniJr."
[man] It became a global commotion.
And there came a time when Vini said,
"Man, I've gotta say something."
As long as the color of the skin is
more important than the sparkle in my eye,
there will be war. I don't usually
publicly respond to criticism.
I'm attacked and I stay silent.
I'm praised and I stay silent.
But I will repeat this for you, racists.
I will not stop dancing.
-["Eu Fiz o Jogo Virar" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd cheers]
[man 1] When he does a dribble
or a bicycle kick,
some other thing he does,
it's not to provoke people
It's because he likes to do those things.
It's not meant to disrespect anyone.
[announcer] Vini Junior. Brilliant!
Absolutely brilliant.
[man 2] The main feature
of Vini's play is dribbling.
Man, if he can't dribble,
what's he gonna do?
Just go through the motions?
His Brazilian flair would be wasted.
Should he just run, cross into the box
and go back to defend? Is that it?
[crowd clamoring]
[man in crowd] Go get a banana!
Go get a banana!
[Tat] The away matches
were becoming unbearable.
[crowd booing, grunting]
There was an issue at every match
and people were blaming him.
They said he was provoking them.
[reporter] On the eve of the derby
against Atltico Madrid,
a doll wearing the Brazilian's jersey
has been hung by the neck from a bridge.
For many, many years in Spain,
there were very few Black soccer players.
As Black soccer players
started coming to Spain,
just like with anything new,
the idiots, the racists,
and all the intolerant people
focused solely on that.
[crowd clamoring]
[commentator] No more. No more.
[Moya] They sang the "monkey" chant
in all stadiums to Samuel Eto'o,
one of Barcelona's star players.
In some ways, it's similar
to what is happening to Vinicius.
Due to numerous racist incidents,
Roberto Carlos is reconsidering
whether to stay in Spain next season.
MONKEY
[Carlos] In my days as a player,
I was afraid of speaking up.
Sometimes you're afraid to speak up
and have them say,
"This guy is stealing someone else's job
and now he's complaining about racism?"
But it's true.
It was there for everyone to see.
I experienced that in Spain.
When I dribbled, they'd hit me,
they'd insult me.
Oh, yeah, for sure they were racist.
You're racist.
Because he's a racist. Come on!
That's how we are as Brazilians.
We don't know how to fight. We just don't.
It's not our style to lash out
or to intimidate others.
Our style is having
the gift of playing soccer.
[aggressive music playing]
[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd cheering]
[Fernando] Vinicius is the kind of guy
who lives and breathes his job.
[Menegate] It's mine! Call it! It's you!
[man shouts] Yeah!
"Some things'll never change."
Tupac! As Tupac used to say.
[aggressive music continues]
[men clamoring, laughing]
So bad, bro.
It's lack of training, man.
[announcer] Cross. It's a low ball.
It falls to Andr.
It's back with Flamengo.
-Come on.
-Goal! Son of a bitch!
[men shouting, clamoring]
[music fades]
[crowd roaring, singing]
[Vini] Ever since I got to Flamengo,
I've always been among the top players.
I've always, without question,
paid close attention to my teachers.
-We're champions.
-We're champions.
-Champions.
-Champions, dude.
-Champions.
-Champions.
-Champions.
-[man] Show us your medals.
[Vini] I played on one of the best
youth teams that Flamengo's ever had.
And they'd say,
"Only two or three will ever make it."
And I was like, "No way. Impossible!"
[man 2] He doesn't fit the typical profile
of the boys at this stage
because it's very easy
to fall into the clichs about
how the poor kid is trying to find a way
to ascend socially through the game.
Not that it's not true,
but if you highlight
that aspect of it too much,
you can end up hiding
a much harsher reality.
By leaving out the thousands of kids
that end up not making it.
[Vini] It kept narrowing down,
and fewer players
made it to the next level.
And every time,
you would have to give up doing even more.
So that it could all work out.
He missed a lot of his childhood.
When we had a party to go to,
he couldn't come.
And when he did come,
he knew he couldn't stay for too long.
I remember when he was first called up
to the national team.
He was on the youth team.
[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
SOUTH AMERICAN U-17 CHAMPIONSHIP
[crowd cheering]
[players yelling]
[man 3] Go on, Vini! Vini! Go on! Go on!
[Vini] The South American
Under-17 Championship was unreal.
I was way above the other players.
No other player has had before or after
that U-17 Championship,
a performance like his in that tournament.
Top scorer, goal scorer and best player.
And thats's when the European clubs
start scrambling to sign Vini.
I had lunch with City,
had lunch with Chelsea.
Went for a drink with Tottenham
Many offers came in.
But they only told me about two,
to make it easier. [chuckles]
I just say yes or no,
and where I wanna go.
It was just completely overwhelming,
because in one month,
everyone's life changed.
Vinicius's Flamengo's and ours.
[reporter] Flamengo and Real Madrid made
a deal, for the Jewel of Gvea.
[Peixoto] It's hard to believe, isn't it?
I mean, 45 million euros
for a 16-year-old kid
who hadn't yet played professionally.
FIFA allows a deal to be made
with the team a player is with,
before they turn 18.
But the player will only sign it
after their 18th birthday.
[Fred] With the sale agreement settled,
he renews his contract with Flamengo.
I'm very happy with everything
that's going on in my life
and with everyone's support at Flamengo.
-I've just signed my first contract.
-[players cheering]
Being able to
financially support my whole family
was extremely gratifying.
And that was only possible
because of soccer.
My dad could move up at his job,
but he wouldn't earn much
because he didn't have an education.
And my mom had to take care of us.
Then one day he said to me,
"Hey! Why don't you just manage me
instead of working?"
You know that kind of thing can happen
when your son's a soccer player
and starts earning more than you do.
So what do you do?
Huh?
That's when it gets tricky.
What do you do
when your son earns more than you do?
Who's in charge of the house?
How do you deal with that?
But, no.
He he's always been very chill about it.
I was already so happy with everything
and being able to debut at the Maracan
with Flamengo fans screaming my name.
All my family and friends were there.
I remember we bought, like, 100 tickets.
MAY 13TH, 2017
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer 1]
Vinicius Junior, 16 years old,
is selected for the squad
for the first time.
[Luana] Then they announced it
"Vinicius Junior is coming on."
When it said that oh, Lord.
We got to live his dream,
which was to make it to Flamengo.
One of the best day's in my family's life.
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 2]
Vinicius Junior has been called.
[announcer 3] It sounded
like a goal celebration down here.
[announcer 3] The fans are
on their feet, clapping.
-Vinicius Junior is coming on!
-[Vini] I was 16.
And had just played on the youth team,
with no fans, no nothing.
The path from behind the goal
to Z Ricardo took forever
because I didn't want to go on.
I was so nervous.
[applause]
[Luana] I have a video where I screamed,
"Dad, he made it!
What you said came true!"
He said my nephew would play for Flamengo
when he was 18,
and it was even sooner than that.
I have that date right here.
[emotional music playing]
Uh
[Vini] I have it tattooed right here.
It's the date when everything changed.
It marks the moment
that changed my history in soccer.
The day I began playing professionally
and signed
with the greatest club in the world.
[Tat] His rise was truly meteoric.
How could he possibly become
a starter for Flamengo?
He did it.
How can he be
one of the best on the team? He did it.
-[funky dance music playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd roaring]
[crowd roaring]
[Fernando] Vinicius is
the face of Flamengo,
the face of Rio de Janeiro.
He embodies the Maracan.
And he's the embodiment
of Brazilian soccer.
[Douglonez] He's the ultimate story
of Rio de Janeiro,
of the Black man from the favela,
the dancer filled with contagious energy.
And at the same time,
he's a dedicated professional.
[Vini] I never thought about Real Madrid
while I was playing for Flamengo.
I was living my dream
of playing for the club I'd always loved.
When he turned 18,
he could go to Europe to play.
It was mid-season here,
Flamengo was top of the table.
Just the thought that you'd have to leave
It's rough.
[crowd roaring]
[crowd, in Portuguese] Stay, Vinicius!
Oh oh oh-oh
[Vini, in English] I knew it was
my last game at the Maracan.
And the fans were shouting for me to stay.
[crowd in Portuguese] Oh, stay Vinicius
Oh, stay Vinicius
Oh oh-oh
[tender music playing]
[in English] So,
today I'm saying goodbye, to
to go after my dreams and
fulfill all the other dreams
I have for my life.
I'm going to Real Madrid, and to
to Europe, to a different culture,
which won't just help me, but
will also help all my family
and the people that love me
and are always with me.
And I have to say thank you
to every single one of them.
SPAIN
-[man] Going up?
-[Tat] Yeah, let's go.
Let's wake him up. Give him a fright.
Wait. Wake him up? Really?
-Is he alone?
-[Tat] He is, yeah.
[laughs]
[Tat] Here. [whistles]
[whistling]
-[Tat] Wakey, wakey!
-Oh, my goodness.
[man] You wake up this easy?
[all laughing]
[man] What's up?
[Vini] Grab me some shorts.
Hey, what's up?
-You good?
-I'm fine.
-All good.
-And London?
I saw your photo with with Jay-Z.
That's awesome.
One hell of a show.
-Fuck, that was awesome.
-[Tat] So cool.
[man] Put some shorts on.
He scared me. [chuckling]
Out of nowhere.
You know, normally, I don't freak out
when I meet other players or celebrities.
I'm usually very cool about it,
but with Ronaldo and Ronaldinho,
I just can't get used to it.
Because we all know that after Pel,
he's our greatest player.
When I'm out there on the field,
the things he's told me come to mind.
And just yesterday, with Kylian's goal,
I was able to do a Ronaldo-style dribble.
And I really hope that I was
able to make him proud.
TO VINI JR.
A BIG HUG FROM YOUR FRIEND RONALDO
There you go. That's it, you know.
Scoring a goal is
How many years have you been here?
Five years. Nearly five.
And you've been scoring goals
for two, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, and a goal gives you
a lot of confidence for the next game.
"Oh, I don't need to score
in the next game."
When you're cool about it,
is when you score.
But when you're thinking about scoring
No, and there's also that trick
to throw the defender's rhythm off,
because when the guy tries
to race against you, like Walker,
he's fast as hell,
but if you do that little trick
and go again, he'll fall behind.
It's tough if he catches up,
but then you just do it again. Screw it.
To one side, then the other.
Eventually, he'll throw up from dizziness.
[all laughing]
-Seriously, man, really good. Congrats.
-Thanks.
One heck of an evolution.
-[man on TV] Lucas Paquet
-[Vini] Right there. Who got it right?
[man 2] Do you know the whole squad?
-[man on TV] Forwards Bruno Henrique.
-[man 2] Coutinho.
-Flamengo, Bruno Henrique.
-[man 2] David Neres, Ajax.
-[man 2] Vinicius Junior.
-[all cheering]
[Menegate] Hell yeah! Fuck!
My dream is to be able to help
the Brazilian team as much as Pel did,
as much as Zico.
Like all the greats
who have represented the national team
and have had
incredible careers like Ronaldo,
who won two World Cups
and reached three finals.
That's my dream.
[table rattling]
[men] Oh
I'm Vinicius Junior,
I'm 19 years old.
I'm from Rio de Janeiro
and I play for Real Madrid.
[group singing "Falta Voc" in Portuguese]
QATAR WORLD CUP
[singing continues]
[all continue singing in Portuguese]
[percussive instruments playing]
[all singing in Portuguese]
[crowd clamoring]
[Vini] I was so nervous.
It was my first World Cup match.
And I knew that the entire country
had their eyes glued to their TVs
to watch these 22 players on the field.
[der] It's a unique feeling.
It's something that represents
so much to many people.
And we all know the weight
that the yellow jersey carries.
[announcer] Turning on.
-Vinicius Junior, fine save! Bundled in!
-[crowd roaring]
Awesome!
Come on!
[energetic music playing]
Let's go! Let's go! Come on!
[announcer] Pushing Lazovi back
and finding Richarlison!
[crowd roaring]
Now that is Brazil!
BRAZIL 2 X 0 SERBIA
[camera clicks]
How do you feel now?
Wherever you go, everyone's filming you.
I watch what I say more.
[both laugh]
[all singing, chanting]
-[announcer 1] Here's Raphinha.
-[announcer 2] What a fantastic ball.
BRAZIL 1 X 0 SWITZERLAND
[crowd groaning]
[energetic music continues]
[laughing]
Hey, Juninho.
-[man 1] You'll be a champion.
-[man 2] Champion.
[man 1] Vini!
-[woman] Vini! Vini!
-[man 2] Vini! Vini!
[announcer 1] It's knockout time.
Brazil vs. South Korea.
[announcer 2] And keep on going too,
and he has plenty to pick out!
[announcer 1] Go on, Vini!
Go on! Go on! Goal!
For Brazil!
[crowd cheering]
[joyful music playing]
[announcer 1] Vinicius.
Paquet!
BRAZIL 4 X 1 SOUTH KOREA
Four-nil Brazil!
[laughing]
[announcer 2] And the quarterfinals begin.
Brazil versus Croatia.
[tense music playing]
[announcer 1] Vinicius Jnior
charges forward again.
Can he make it count?
-[announcer 1 groans]
-[crowd groaning]
[announcer 1] Driving forward,
still Vinicius Jnior.
-This is Neymar.
-[crowd cheering]
Brilliant challenge. Wait, there's chaos!
-[crowd groaning]
-Livakovi steps in to block.
Wow, that was brave.
Now he's got a fresh test.
Rodrygo steps up in his place.
Extra time looms.
It could all come down to penalties.
Marquinhos has to score, and he hasn't!
He's missed it!
Croatia did it again!
PENALTY SHOOTOUBRAZIL 2 X 4 CROATIA
What an unbelievable
footballing fairy tale this is.
[somber music playing]
[Vini] It was the saddest day of my life,
for sure.
One mistake we made,
cost us four years of hard work.
After the game's over, you say,
"Damn, I could've gone for that ball.
I could've passed better."
[sobbing]
[car horn blaring]
[Carlos] No one likes losing.
Players don't go on the pitch
wanting to lose or be substituted.
But there are some days
when the night is really tough.
We left the game
and went to the apartment
where we were staying.
All he said was to get him out of there.
He wanted to leave.
He was fouled.
If the game stops there, it's over.
Substitutions take at least two minutes
by the time everyone leaves.
[man] The ref would add two more minutes.
The guy has to kick it long.
In the end, if he takes off Ney
and puts Bremer on,
the game's over, finished.
Just one shot on goal.
The game was dead, it was already over.
[pensive music playing]
Remarkably, Real Madrid gets it very right
by appointing Ancelotti.
He was exactly who they needed
to manage a locker room
with such a range of ages,
nationalities, cultures,
and so many differences.
[Rodrygo] He's a coach
that handles the locker room very well.
Much more than just tactics
and technicalities,
he can sometimes win a game
just by the culture he creates.
For me, Carlo Ancelotti is like a father.
It must feel good
to have someone like that as your manager
because he is like your dad.
You feel the confidence.
You feel the love.
Ancelotti, more or less,
gives us the freedom to do what we want,
but always responsibly.
[laughs]
The last thing we want to do
is to take away his ability
in one-on-one situations.
He needs to be comfortable on the field.
[Douglonez] Maybe let's walk
in the direction of where you play.
-But I prefer it here.
-[Douglonez] You do?
Yeah, 'cause this side
attacks towards our fans. [laughs]
-[Douglonez] Let's go there, then.
-Over here?
I like here 'cause of the fans,
but I prefer there
'cause it's far from Ancelotti.
[laughs]
'Cause when I'm here,
he can complain to me.
Over there, I just pretend I'm listening.
[laughs]
[Douglonez] Ancelotti gave him two tools.
The first one, was confidence.
In the sense,
"That's how you play, so go do that."
And the other one was,
"This team is going to play in a way
that gets to fully explore your potential
in this space on the left."
And the two things clicked.
And he was scoring
from the start of the season.
He earned his spot
and he became unstoppable.
-[crowd cheering]
-[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
[announcer 1] He got himself
in a pickle there.
The ball's been stolen.
Vinicius cuts it back. Benzema!
[announcer 2] A defensive slip.
And he punishes them!
[announcer 1] Vini Junior makes a run!
It's now him against Danilo. Vini Junior!
He squares it to Modri.
Benzema, it's looking good!
And goal!
[announcer 2] Goal!
And that's how comebacks happen.
Because of everything that team had done,
game after game in the Champions League.
And it all started with that incredible
turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain.
[announcer 1] Into the box!
Vinicius crosses it to Benzema!
[Tati] And the best part is
that he understands
that he can be the supporting star,
with his assists.
Because he knows,
every time he gets the ball in the box,
Benzema will score.
[announcer 1] Whoa!
[announcer 2] Goal!
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 1] Oh, my goodness gracious!
[announcer 2] Oh, my God!
What a beautiful play!
It was amazing to see!
Very beautiful! Look at this goal!
Goal!
Ha ha!
[Ancelotti] You could lose a semifinal.
What you can't lose is the confidence
that you'll reach the final.
[announcer 1] City come forward.
He cuts it back behind Gabriel.
Bernardo Silva! He leaves it to Mahrez!
[Tat] Seventy minutes have gone by.
How can they possibly turn it around?
[announcer 1] Benzema right in the middle!
Goal!
And when Rodrygo put the ball
on the center spot to restart,
the fourth official holds up
the board showing "six minutes."
And it felt like
we had just scored a goal!
[crowd cheering]
[Vzquez] Whenever we enter the Bernabu
and see the stadium full of people,
and they're all cheering you on,
we like to say it's like
having an extra player on the field.
[announcer 1] Real Madrid keeps
pressuring them.'
Here comes Rodrygo! Rodrygo! Goal!
[announcer 2] Look at that!
Rodrygo cuts it back from the right,
and it's intended for him.
Rodrygo plays it inside,
it goes to Benzema!
He goes down! Penalty!
Real Madrid inch towards the final.
It's Benzema!
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
[shouting, cheering]
[in Portuguese] Yes. Yes. Yes.
We're going to Paris!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
We're going to Paris!
[announcer 1] Long live Real Madrid!
Long live the kings of Europe!
The game ends at the Bernabu!
[Vini] We hugged each other
and started crying.
And we looked at each other again.
And we hugged again,
and we just couldn't believe it.
We were in disbelief.
We were in the final
of the Champions League.
In that moment,
it felt like seeing a movie
with everything we'd been through
from the beginning.
all the difficulties,
and all the doubts they had about us.
It was a magical night,
but after one heck of a storm. [laughs]
Shit, we're in the Champions League final.
That means we made it!
We've become real players.
[pensive music playing]
The days were slow.
I tried my best
not to think about the final.
But all day,
I just thought about the final.
Time stood still.
[buzzing]
[man] Is it easier now?
-No.
-[man] Hard, huh?
It depends on how it goes.
If we score early, then yeah.
Otherwise, they'll come after me.
-[man] Then it's rough.
-Yeah.
If they all come for me, it gets tough.
[phone bleeps]
Vini, we're here
to wish you luck.
We know that
Good luck!
you're really nervous
Good luck!
[laughs] Bernardo!
[in Portuguese] Yeah,
and God's will be done and Amen.
SIBLINGS AND NIECE
[Bernardo] Good luck!
PARIS
FRANCE
[crowd clamoring]
[Vini, in English] I was nervous
until the game started.
After the game starts,
you just relax a little
and you kind of forget
that you're in a final.
And Liverpool,
once again ran all over us.
[announcer] He controls it in the area.
Alexander-Arnold pushes forward,
gets clear of Mendy, and crosses it in.
The touch! Courtois!
Look at Man. He gets past the first,
gets past the second, Man is charging!
He's hit the post and Courtois!
Off his head!
Off Courtois's back! Again!
[Vini] Thibault put in
one of the best performances
in the history of the Champions League,
stopping God knows how many shots.
But once again, they made the mistake
of not finishing the game.
They couldn't score.
[announcer] Valverde,
it's Real Madrid's now.
Carvajal bombs past him,
Benzema's arriving.
Valverde. The cross comes in. Vini!
Goal!
In theory it's an easy goal.
But it's actually very difficult.
You don't know if the goalkeeper
can reach the ball or not,
so you have to hit it hard
so that the goalkeeper doesn't get to it,
but you don't want to sky it.
At crucial moments, it often happens
that you're already thinking
about your celebration.
And you end up missing that goal,
which, theoretically, for those watching,
is very easy.
[crowd roaring]
[Vini] After the goal,
I had no idea where to run.
I didn't know what to do,
or where my family even was anymore.
I just wanted to look at them,
send them a hug,
and dedicate this goal to them.
That goal in the final had more
impact than Vini's entire season.
A great season. This season was
very long and full of comebacks.
We have to celebrate
our accomplishments for this season.
[Felipe] That moment changed
both his life and career.
His life after that goal was different.
One of fame, recognition,
and new standing as an athlete.
That's when Vini showed everybody
the player he really is.
A decisive player who makes a difference,
who knows how to win games,
and who can win titles.
And after some challenging years,
at the end of the day,
that goal will be remembered as the one
that secured his first Champions League.
He has done extremely well
in the 2021 season.
He's shown everybody
exactly what he's capable of
and who he is.
The goal in that final
was Vini channeling
everything he's ever been through
and kicking it into that ball.
He then rises
to a completely different level.
That moment marks
his transformation from a great player
into the global superstar he became
after that Champions League final.
["Eu Fiz o Jogo Virar" playing]
Oh, my God!
[lyrics in Portuguese]
[cameras clicking]
Yeah. I'm ready now.
That one over there is really cool.
[all clamoring]
Yeah, I like this. Looks good.
"Classy's" the word you're looking for.
DANCE, VINI JR
[all shouting, clamoring] Vini!
-[all clamoring]
-[cameras clicking]
-[man] It's so awesome to meet you.
-[woman] Vini, look!
It's a dream to meet you. Thank you.
-[man] Vinicius!
-[cameras clicking]
[man 2] Vinicius!
-Here's a kiss! I love you! Thank you!
-[van starts]
Thank you very much!
-[laughs]
-[Douglonez] They're gonna follow us.
They're still following us.
And he's riding a scooter!
That's not gonna be easy, man.
Look at him. [laughing]
[Douglonez] And the one driving
is getting in the way of the photographer.
[Vini chuckles] Jeez.
[distant siren wailing]
He's there.
[Douglonez] Yeah, I see him.
As if we couldn't see him from here.
-That's crazy, man.
-[Vini] Look, he grabbed his phone.
-He's probably telling the others.
-[Douglonez] For sure.
[Douglonez] If you go out to a restaurant,
everybody's gonna know about it.
His profession kind of keeps him
trapped inside of this
athlete's cage, of sorts.
He has to find ways of being
comfortable in his own home.
Because a top-level player is practically
living under house arrest, you know?
You can't go out.
[menacing music playing]
Freddy!
-[man] This is crazy.
-[Vini] Oh, damn.
Ice. Ice.
[inhaling sharply]
[laughing]
-No, I don't want it.
-[man] Let me show you.
This one's a bit short.
That one's awesome.
-Which one! This?
-That one.
I like both.
Fresh.
[both laugh]
-That's cool.
-[Vini] Did he say how much?
-[Felipe] He said they're expensive.
-[Vini] Hmm.
I'll take it off then. I'm not crazy.
How much?
Uh, for this set?
Come the price.
-Holy shit.
-[Vini] No way! Take it off. Yeah.
Take them off already. Come on.
Take them off. Quick. Take them off, man.
[steam hissing]
[Najib] It's not cooked.
When I make him beans,
I add all sorts of things
he doesn't usually eat.
Because that way
we make sure he gets
all the vitamins he needs,
and I'm constantly talking
to Thiago about all of this.
So I add lots of seasoning.
And this is the secret.
[chuckles]
[sizzling]
We have a weekly plan in place
which is based on the club's requests.
But depending on Vini's level
of wear and tear,
we have to adjust it as we go.
We're always trying to make things
as tasty as possible for him
because food is not just about
replenishing nutrients.
It's not just about
making sure he has energy to train.
It's also his social time.
It's the time when we sit down and chat.
It's a moment when he reconnects
with Brazil.
[Vini] You know,
so many players can come back,
and it's just over, man.
-Sure, man. You have no idea.
-[Menegate] I didn't remember him coming.
He had no idea how to turn it on.
They all came over.
[Menegate] Like, if you're
not willing to fail.
It's more than the prize.
He's gonna work? [laughs]
But if you asked him
Look at that.
Hey, Douglonez.
[laughs]
I see. But then Vin is even
paying tribute to you there.
[laughing]
But one thing that bothers me
[Tat] Uh-huh.
as an outsider watching the game,
is the way a club's captain is selected.
Who's gonna be the captain?
It's easy to use time
as the decisive factor, isn't it?
But often, that isn't a reflection
of a true leader on the field.
[Vini] But the best way
to be captain is that--
Yes, easier, not the best way.
-It's the easiest.
-[Vini] No, best.
[Thiago] You have a bunch of companies.
You're a successful guy.
Would you pick the employee
that's been at your company the longest--
It's different, Thiago. The boss,
the head of the club is the president.
He's not the club captain
on on on the field.
You're muddling it, man.
You can't compare it to a company.
-Totally different.
-You're asking not just on the pitch?
But off as well? The years give you that--
Maybe in three years, Vini can be captain.
-Oh, I'm not old enough to be captain.
-[Tat] Exactly!
I don't know. In ten years,
you won't be the same person you are now.
-[Tat] Of course not.
-Nor will Valverde. Or Bellingham.
So, it's good man. That's why it's good.
The guy already knows everyone
and knows the situation.
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer] Vinicius Junior!
[crowd cheering]
[Tati] Vini wants to be a great player.
In order to be a great player,
you need to win titles.
To win titles,
you need to have the best team.
You're not playing on your own.
[crowd roaring]
[bright, ethereal music playing]
[announcer] Valencia versus Real Madrid
has always been a very important match.
-[man 1 in Spanish] Monkey!
-[man 2 in Spanish] Asshole!
[men grunting, shouting]
[Fernando] What happened in Valencia
was extremely traumatic
Especially because Real Madrid
was already the Spanish Champion.
Then all of a sudden,
it turns into the game of the season
for reasons
completely unrelated to soccer.
MAY 21ST, 2023
What I witnessed inside of that stadium
was that every time he touched the ball
there was pressure.
There were a lot of insults
and a lot of noise.
[reporter] I've heard more than one
racist chant from the Valencia fans,
aimed at Vinicius Junior. Unacceptable!
Unacceptable!
[der] We had a corner kick.
And I asked him what happened.
He said, "That guy insulted me."
[Rodrygo] He heard a fan
call him a "monkey"
[announcer] Vini's talking to Gay,
Valencia's captain,
pointing that way and saying,
"Right there. That's him. That's the one."
[Rodrygo] In that moment,
I got really angry too.
You know, as a Black man,
it it got under my skin.
[Tat] Vini doesn't really talk much.
That's just how he is.
But there's a point where things
build up inside and he falls apart.
[crowd chanting in Spanish]
Monkey, monkey, monkey!
I was in Valencia that day.
I was in the stadium. I was it all happen.
It was a very small group of people.
who yelled racist insults at Vinicius.
[crowd chanting in Spanish]
Monkey! Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!
[crowd jeering]
[Fernanda] I was back in Brazil that day.
When the game ended,
I just couldn't stop crying.
I began seeing pictures of him.
And I was really nervous.
And I wasn't there to hug my son.
What could I do?
[crowd jeering]
You guys kept a lot of things from me.
We didn't tell her.
We had to wait in order to
We wouldn't even watch TV.
So she wouldn't get upset.
When she found out
she cried, her blood pressure went up.
To suffer that in the middle of a game
was very sad because I'm normally
so concentrated during a game
that I usually don't hear anything.
But that day it happened so many times
that I lost the will to play,
I wanted to get off the field.
Then the referee asked me to keep playing
and my teammates asked me to stay.
The attacks on Vinicius had been going on
for many months, and they kept escalating.
And the escalation was
partly due to the lack of consequences.
[announcer 1] And now,
there's a fight going on.
There's a big fight going on.
[announcer 2] Bengoechea is trying
to figure out what's just happened here.
Bengoechea will have to decide
if this was an assault.
Let's see.
He puts his hand in his pocket.
[crowd roaring]
[announcer 1] He's swapping Vinicius's
yellow card for a red one.
[pundit] There's the play itself,
which you could analyze technically
to conclude if it merits
a yellow or a red card,
but in that game,
there was already an existing
backdrop of hatred against Vinicius.
VAR edited the images
shown to the referee,
leaving out the headlock that triggered
Vinicius Junior's reaction.
[all clamoring]
[Tat] A kid being a victim of racism,
being portrayed in that moment
as the one responsible
for the whole situation.
[reporter 1] Good evening.
How do you feel about another defeat
after having already lost to Man City?
What are your thoughts?
-Yeah. Should we talk about soccer?
-[reporter] Yes.
Or something else?
What happened here today
should never happen.
-This all seems quite obvious.
-[reporter] Absolutely.
When a stadium shouts "monkey" at a player
and a coach considers taking him
out of the game for that reason,
there's something very wrong
happening in this league.
[reporter] We're on the same page.
I want you to know that.
Would you still like to talk about soccer
No. I do not want to.
He makes it clear that racism exists
and always has.
And that other Black players,
even bigger than him,
like Pel, for example,
chose to not confront it.
THIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME
OR THE SECOND OR THE THIRD
RACISM IS NORMAL IN LA LIGA
[Gustavo] And after this whole situation,
Javier Tebas,
who's the President of La Liga,
decides to criticize Vinicius in a Tweet.
BEFORE CRITICIZING LA LIGA,
YOU SHOULD GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGH[Tebas] The outcome was what it was.
It wasn't my intention whatsoever.
I only meant to explain what was going on.
But clearly, I was mistaken
because the impact caused
was not what I intended.
And when you have good intentions,
but the impact is the opposite,
well, you've clearly done something wrong.
Sometimes, certain things happen
that end up being quite positive
when something truly significant
and relevant occurs,
creating a situation
where people can't remain silent anymore.
-["Negro Drama (Ao Vivo)" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[man 1] What we've all seen happen
today in Valencia was truly shameful.
La Liga should have stopped the game!
Real Madrid will not tolerate
racist insults against any of our players.
[chanting]
[man 2] United against racism.
[woman 1] Racism scandal
has hit Spanish football.
IT'S A RACIST COUNTRY
VINI JR
We have a real problem in this country.
[woman 2] Rio's Christ the Redeemer statue
will go dark as a symbolic gesture.
There may come a time where Black players
will just say, "I'm not going to Spain."
[woman 2] Vinicius Junior's red card
has been overturned,
ensuring he won't face suspension.
[Douglonez] Gotta win the game.
But today I'll be sitting
next to the President.
He asked me
to watch the game with him.
-[Douglonez] How was your conversation?
-It went well.
He said what he always says.
That this kind of thing
can't happen in the league.
and he'll do everything in his power
so we can make a change together.
In order for us to address
what no one's managed to change so far.
[announcer] All the Real Madrid players
wearing Vinicius's jersey.
"We're all Vinicius."
"Enough is enough," that's the slogan.
RACISTS OUT OF SOCCER
That's being displayed everywhere
at the Santiago stadium.
He's sacrificing some of the greatness
he could achieve as a player
for an even greater cause.
-[crowd chattering]
-[cameras clicking]
Vini, is the fight
against racism in your life
even at the expense of soccer?
Is it greater than your soccer ambitions?
Oh, it definitely is, because in soccer,
there are so many people,
so many players that are better than me,
who've been here before.
And what I want
is to make people
in this world evolve and improve.
I want us to have equality,
that, in the near future,
we will have fewer cases of racism.
And that Black people are able to have
normal lives like everyone else.
I go to the games
with my head fully in the game
so that I can do
my very best for the team,
but sometimes it's just not possible.
So, I have to concentrate really hard
every single day.
[cameras clicking]
I'm sorry.
I just want to play soccer. All I want
is to do everything I can
for my team and my family.
[announcer] Martinelli called
for the cross, up goes Vini Junior!
And the ball goes over the goal!
[announcer] Second half is underway.
One-nil Brazil after MartinellI's goal.
Gabriel takes the ball.
Plays it with his left.
Colombia's raised the pressure
on the Brazilian team.
Joo Pedro couldn't control it.
Here comes Brazil! Bruno Guimares.
Look at Vini! Down on the right.
Snchez comes in. What now, ref?
No way!
That tackle clearly calls
for a yellow card.
Poor thing.
Once again, Vini Junior's
a reason for concern.
I think the doctor
just indicated something.
Vini will no longer be able to play.
For fuck's sake!
Fernando Diniz calls on
forward Joo Pedro, number nine,
who's a former player for Fluminense
and currently plays
for Brighton in England.
This had never happened before.
In the five years we've worked together,
the only injury he had
was when I got here.
Then never again.
Now he had two muscular injuries in a row.
[announcer] Vini Junior has gone down
15 minutes in.
[Tat] He got injured
in the third game of the season,
was able to come back,
then played for Brazil,
and got injured again in that game.
I don't know if he realized
how much he could benefit from that.
But since he's always so dedicated,
he entrusts his body to Thiago.
Then Thiago's skill comes into play,
turning this moment into something
useful for the rest of the season.
[Thiago] Look at the wall,
not at the floor.
That's it! The form is looking great.
Three!
Lift those hips.
[Vini] Every bad situation
has a silver lining.
So, during these two injuries,
I focused even more
on my physical preparation.
Bend even lower. Go up. That's it.
Everybody said
that Vini came back much stronger.
That just happened
because we had the extra time to work,
without worrying about conflicting
with the team's activities.
Bend those knees.
Good one.
I use Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James,
and Luka Modri as examples for my team.
I don't drink, I don't smoke.
I do everything I can to stay on track
and play for as long as I possibly can.
[Tat] The whole structure
we put in place for Vini
could be used
for lots of different players.
But it wouldn't yield the same results.
So, this is the progression
from the first MRI.
[Tat] Because it depends on
him wanting it.
[Vini] Vini Junior.
[Thiago] He's in the hyperbaric chamber
for about an hour and 20 minutes,
which is when he begins
to feel the benefits
of that oxygen supplementation.
This helps him not only with his muscles
but with his entire system.
[chamber whirring, beeping]
You know, he's been out for a few weeks,
yet he's immediately regained his rhythm.
He's someone who's
completely focused on his profession.
-[Douglonez] Good game.
-[Vini] Thank you.
[reporter] Valencia and Real Madrid
will be playing again.
It'll be the first time
Vinicius Junior will be back here
after what he went through.
Valencia have decided
that the Brazilian production company
filming the documentary
will not be granted access to the stadium.
[Cortes] I understand that, at this point,
Valencia didn't want
any more problems with their supporters.
So, that's why they decided to ban
the Netflix cameras
from the Mestalla Stadium.
[crowd, in Spanish] Where is Netflix?
Netflix where are you?
Where is Netflix?
[Vini, in English] In the last game,
I didn't know
what was gonna happen in Valencia.
So, of course, it surprised me.
But not today, though. My head is clear.5
My teammates
will have my back for anything
that might happen on or off the field.
[announcer 1] It seems like
this has the potential
of being a very intense match.
[announcer 2] Vinicius protects the ball,
he's toppled over, but wins the foul.
[dramatic music playing]
Valencia fans are booing Vinicius Junior.
He's gone down. He's complaining.
He's asking for a penalty.
Gil Manzano sees it as a normal play.
There's a deflection shot from Hugo!
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
This is a dangerous attempt.
He rolls it in! Goal!
[stadium announcer] Goal!
[announcer 2] Goal for Valencia!
Carvajal wants the ball.
They cross it to Carvajal
on the right side andVini Junior!
Goal!
Hell yeah!
[hopeful music playing]
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer 2] He's created an opportunity.
The cross comes in!
Vini Malvadeza gets
his second against Valencia!
We're sure that the whole world
got to see that.
They didn't watch the game? Maybe not.
But the next day,
they all read it in the paper.
This just happened.
In that moment, we can say that
Spanish society begins to see a shift.
[newscaster] Today, a court in Valencia
handing down eight-month sentences
to three Valencia fans
who racially abused Vinicius
in a game in May 2023.
It's taken a long time
for this to come to court,
but the fact it has come to court
has never happened before,
with fans being prosecuted
for racist abuse at a Spanish game.
I'M NOT A VICTIM OF RACISM
I EXECUTE RACISTS
THIS HISTORIC SENTENCING IN SPAIN
IS FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE
LET OTHER RACISTS BE SCARED,
ASHAMED, AND HIDE IN THE SHADOWS.
IT'S FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE.
When he makes that post,
he gets everyone involved in the debate.
He doesn't let it lie
That would be easy, wouldn't it?
To let it lie.
"Oh, I play for Real Madrid."
"Oh, never mind, it's an away game
next week at the Bernabu."
"I'm gonna be loved by the fans
and everything's cool."
No, it's not cool.
So, tomorrow is the day
of the draw for the
[Douglonez] The Champions League, man.
This is it.
Any preference?
[Vini] All the big teams
made it through, so no.
We'll see.
I'd rather we don't
get City though. [laughs]
[man] The team that is drawn first,
will play the first leg at home.
For fuck's suck. Real Madrid.
First leg's at home.
-[man] They play at home.
-[woman] They will also play at home.
[man 2] Manchester City.
Damn! Ugh.
Where's the VAR?
-[woman] It happened before.
-[man] Let's see what happens.
Now we gotta pray for one of them
to catch a cold or something.
-[woman] Let's analyze these brackets.
-It's a tough one.
[clippers buzzing]
-[Douglonez] Did you watch the draw?
-Nah, I was asleep.
I have practice this afternoon. [laugh]
[Douglonez] And what'd you think
of the results?
I just wanted to know if the first leg was
at home or away.
We're away on the second leg again.
It really sucks. But it is what it is.
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer] You're now at the home
of the Champions League!
We're ready to go!
The 16 that started the year
in contention for the title,
are now just eight!
The first 45 minutes are about to start.
Look at this, Bernardo Silva shoots!
Goal!
The score board is now live
at the Bernabu!
Every team Guardiola trains
always knows what you're gonna do.
He'll take away all your possibilities
with the ball and he'll wear you out.
[announcer 1] Camavinga.
Tries to go past Grealish,
left foot, gets a deflection!
Goal!
Ten minutes after conceding!
Hold on now!
Here comes Rodrygo. He takes it forward.
Rodrygo against Akanji.
Rodrygo!
Goal!
They've turned it around!
In only two minutes!
[announcer 2] He slows it down,
plays it to the edge of the box.
Stones lays it off to Phil Foden!
What a goal! Tying the game in Madrid!
In a game that was just crazy!
Back and forth, back and forth.
[announcer 1] Grealish is inside the box.
He plays it back.
Gvardiol is there, he threatens to
Goal!
We were all absolutely destroyed.
And I was like, "Damn, man.
We just can't beat these guys!"
[announcer 1] Vini Junior.
He switches the play to the right.
Valverde kicks it in!
[crowd roars]
[announcer 2] Goal!
What a goal!
VINI JR WITH THE ASSIST TO RODRYGO
WE WON'T SURRENDER
[Vini] Playing against the best
in the world makes you a better player.
And against the best teams,
I usually have more space.
When I play in the league, there's usually
two or three players marking me.
And it gets a bit complicated,
and I don't always get to play my game.
And in the Champions League,
no teams actually do that,
so there's more goals.
That's why people like
watching those games a lot more.
[man] He was trying to close it,
so I said, "Dude, don't close it."
"Buy another one, you idiot."
[Tat] I'm getting tired already!
[man] No you're the idiot.
[men laughing]
[pensive music playing]
-You can't drop the ball.
-That's too close.
There you go. There you go.
[laughing]
[Thiago] That's it.
Bend your knees lower.
Get closer to the bottom.
Good.
Stop when you get there
and come back again.
[music fades]
-What's up?
-Wow, man! You're looking fancy.
[chuckles]
[Tat] Your backpack's in the trunk.
See you tomorrow.
Bye now.
[announcer] The first half is
about to get underway!
Here's Bellingham with the ball!
It slips a bit. Passes to Valverde.
Vini asks for it up front.
Is the timing right?
Vini's inside the box,
crosses it to Rodrygo.
Spectacular move from Rodrygo!
Goal!
Great ball to De Bruyne! It looks good!
It was meant for Haaland! Lunin!
[tense music playing]
De Bruyne crosses it. Lunin!
Kevin De Bruyne, to Haaland.
That was really strong!
Nacho! Nacho! Almost scores on own goal!
We don't usually play this way,
defending for the whole game.
Usually, we're the ones
dictating the game,
but against Man City it's
completely different,
especially on their home turf,
with their fans.
[tense music playing]
Doku runs deep, crosses it.
Rdiger clears it.
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
I don't know who wrote
that the Champions League
isn't about surviving.
It's about not dying.
'Cause if you don't die, you can
you can then move on to the next round.
And we held on for 90 minutes
and then we had to go through extra time.
And we were all exhausted.
But we knew that if it went to penalties,
we would make it through.
[announcer] Rdiger!
With his right foot.
Ederson is in the goal.
It's Rdiger!
Goal!
[Luana] You won!
I called it. You guys won!
Good one. Congratulations.
They kept chanting, "Seven! Seven!"
But when they chanted for De Bruyne
-Oh, my God!
-[Thiago] That was badass.
It felt like
the stadium was gonna collapse!
That was so badass!
I've never seen that in a soccer stadium.
I was singing too!
Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
[all laugh]
Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
He's still a young boy,
and I'm a bit older than him.
A bit more experienced in life,
but he's already he's a big star.
But he listens,
and for me, this makes him special.
I see him as a younger brother.
MUNICH
GERMANY
SEMIFINAL
BAYERN MUNICH X REAL MADRID
AWAY GAME
[announcer 1] Here we are in the stadium
for the Champions League semifinals!
[Felipe] It's the perfect combination.
The experience on one hand,
and youth on the other.
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 1] He's a master midfielder,
isn't he?
-[announcer 2] Gotta spread it a bit.
-[announcer 1] He passed it!
[announcer 3[ He's left Vinicius
in front of the goal!
[Kroos] I saw him
joining more the midfield.
The pass for himself
was not that most difficult pass,
but the one who made it
more easy for me was Vini with his run.
[Vini] I often make that run,
but I don't always get the ball
because sometimes I'm just too fast.
We were able to read each other.
That comes from five or six years
of playing together.
And just as we were playing our best,
they scored twice.
[tense music playing]
[announcer] What a goal!
He hammers it in with his right foot!
Goal!
They seemed to be completely done.
Bayern, all of a sudden,
scored two goals really quickly.
[announcer] He still hasn't
found space for the shot.
He decides to run with it!
Great pass and penalty!
Rodrygo wins the penalty.
Vinicius Junior is going to take it.
[crowd clamoring]
I thought about Karim
when he scored that penalty against City.
And I realized that in recent games,
Neuer had been jumping a bit early.
"So I thought,
"I'll put it in the corner."
"And if he dives early,
I'll roll it down the middle."
[announcer] Right foot!
Goal!
[Vini] It was an important game.
And it was great
to come back home without a loss.
Being able to come back to the Bernabu
for the second leg was great.
We missed playing in front of our fans.
[crowd clamoring] Vini! Vini!
Vini! Vini! Vini! Vini! Vini!
[clamoring continues]
[sirens wailing]
[crowd cheering]
[crowd chanting]
RETURN GAME
[announcer] The road to Wembley!
The first half of the game
is about to start!
A spot in the final's up for grabs
at the final before the final,
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich!
Vini Junior!
[crowd cheering]
[Tat] He's a big game player.
He thrives when there's a full house.
The bigger the pressure
the more he shines.
Vini runs with it! Vini down the left!
Vini with the cross!
Neuer!
[crowd cheering]
[announcer] Vini Junior again,
faked Kimmich.
Vini Junior gets to the byline,
and crosses!
That pass was meant for Valverde!
Look at him coming again.
Look at him go! It's wide!
Vini's coming again!
He's going for it! Look at him go!
Neuer!
[cheering]
Good ball to Vini in there!
Hits the post, bounces back!
Rodrygo! Neuer!
Now Bayern Munich comes back again,
Davies against Rdiger.
Davies shifts the ball
onto his right foot!
-[crowd cheering]
-Goal!
[Vini] It's a do or die game,
but we have the advantage
of being on our home turf,
with our families close by
and our fans here with us.
[announcer] Vini Junior!
Real Madrid are not done yet!
Neuer let's it slip!
-[crowd roaring]
-Goal!
Real Madrid just never dies!
[Gustavo] It wasn't surprising.
We saw it coming.
"Real Madrid is gonna
turn this game around."
"They're gonna do it."
[announcer] Left foot pass to Rdiger.
The ball's in the box!
[crowd roaring]
[announcer] My God!
This is unbelievable!
The referee called an offside.
Let's see what they decide now.
They will now review the goal.
Let us see. Let us see!
Let's direct our attention
to the referee for the official call.
[blows whistle]
-And the game is over!
-[crowd roaring]
Goal!
[crowd, in Spanish]
Madrid! Madrid! Madrid!
Go, Madrid!
And nothing more!
And nothing more! Go Madrid!
[murmur of voices]
[Thiago and Douglonez]
Drink it all in one gulp.
-[Thiago] Swirl it and drink what's left.
-[Douglonez] Look at that.
[Thiago] Drink it all.
Don't make that face.
[Douglonez] Look at that.
That's good. Good.
I would like to propose a toast.
In the last week of this season I was
-Feeling sick.
-[Tat] Feeling sick.
-That's right. That's right.
-[Tat] He is.
Feeling sick,
but there's one last game to play.
[all cheering, whooping]
[Vini] I was feeling really sick,
so I had to leave lunch.
Douglo was filming at the time.
I went to have a lie down and and
and all I kept thinking was,
"Oh, man, will I be okay
in the next 48 hours?"
Vini wasn't feeling very well.
He was showing
some symptoms of a viral infection.
Once we get to London, he'll be treated,
get an IV to help him recover,
and we hope he gets better
as soon as possible
so he can be at his best for the final.
Wait, Copa Amrica is
six games in total, right?
If you reach the final,
it's six games, isn't it?
[pensive music playing]
I don't know yet. It's all very new.
I'm scared of flying.
-I'm preparing myself 'cause I'm scared.
-I'm scared too.
I still haven't gone because of that.
I'm scared.
-It's gonna be fine.
-And he's waiting for us to go.
We're going.
He's waiting.
[pensive music continues]
[indistinct chatter, laughter]
[whistling, whooping]
[alert chimes]
Made it.
How are you, Mrs. Nilza?
It's your first time in Spain, isn't it?
[Felipe] See how beautiful Madrid is?
Now she'll come all the time.
No more excuses.
She'll have to come every month.
[Vini] Seeing my whole family there was
something I've always dreamed of.
Being able to see my grandmother
after so much time without seeing her
and having her watch the final.
And my aunt,
who really doesn't like flying at all,
but they made the effort for me.
-[all laughing]
-It's a shame I'm not at home.
Or I'd take all of them with me.
[chuckles]
It took me a while, but I came.
-How are you?
-I found the courage to come for him.
-You made it here.
-Yeah, she's staying.
No, I'm not. I'm going back.
-You're gonna stay, Mrs. Nilza.
-I have to take care of him.
[Luana] Look at that.
Oh wow! Look at this, Nilza!
[ladies laugh]
[Luana] See that?
[Nilza] Oh, my sweet boy!
You going to the final? Are you?
-Are you?
-Yeah!
-See, he's excited.
-[Menegate] We're watching the final, man!
What day is it? I don't remember.
[Tat over speakers] There's still
25 minutes left before we land.
I want to thank all of you for being here.
First of all, I want to thank Papa
for making all of this happen today.
Also, Vini
[Vini] It's a father-son relationship
as well.
My dad is often away, and Tat was
the person who always looked after me.
Both, they're like
my two dads away from home.
Everyone, enjoy every bit of this,
because we don't know
when it'll happen again.
Getting here isn't easy.
So let's cheer like crazy
and Hala Madrid!
Let's go, guys!
[group cheering]
LONDON
ENGLAND
[crowd chattering]
[pensive music playing]
JUNE 1ST, 2024
REAL MADRID X BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Vinicius Junior
La la la la la la
[crowd cheering]
[announcer] It's about to start.
This is the game that matters.
This decides everything!
Now, there's 90 minutes to go
until someone gets to shout,
"We are the champions!"
It's in play!
The Champions League final is underway!
[Vini] I always think about
how many more finals I'll play.
And this could be the last one.
So you better enjoy every second,
all the anticipation,
the whole allure of the Champion's League.
'Cause it's not easy to get to the final.
Not everybody can win.
And I've already won once.
But I want to win many more.
[announcer] He's lost the ball.
Camavinga's complaining about it.
He's right in front of the goal!
Fllkrug's shot smashes off the post.
[Vini] I had to keep tracking back
because we were facing a great team
who was giving it
everything they had to try to win.
[announcer] He passes the ball,
good thinking by Sabitzer,
sets up a shot and oh!
Courtois!
Ball to Vinicius.
A cross towards Rodrygo.
He jumps on it but goes over.
Carvajal!
[Ancelotti] I don't know how far he'll go.
But the reality is, at the moment,
he's the most decisive player in soccer.
[Vini] I was never a fan
of the number seven
until I got here and saw
what it actually represents.
What Cristiano did here, what Ral did.
[announcer] He's lost it.
Another corner for Madrid.
Which Toni Kroos is about to take.
Into the box, a header from Carvajal.
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
What a smooth pass!
Vinicius has an opportunity.
He controls it. He make space!
And shoots!
[crowd cheering]
[dramatic music playing]
Vinicius Junior!
Vini! Junior!
Goal for Real Madrid!
[cheering, whooping]
He received the ball from Bellingham,
and now Real Madrid lead two-nil.
Yes, you said it.
He matched Messi, right?
[announcer 2] He's surpassed Messi.
He's the youngest player to score
in two Champions League finals.
[cheering continues]
[dramatic music continues]
Champions, ol, ol, ol, ol
We're champions again!
I'll see you in Cibeles!
It's been a season
that I'll never forget in my life.
It's a crowning moment not just for me,
but my entire family.
And my friends and everybody
who rooted for me. [sniffles]
Is he here?
He's here. Awesome!
Hello!
[group cheering, applauding]
Champions, ol, ol, ol
["Gratido" playing]
[men continue singing in background]
[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd cheering]
I am very happy
with the best player in the world.
[laughing]
[announcer] Here comes Vini!
He's flying, Vini Junior!
He's got past Emre Can!
Vini Junior! He's coming back!
Here comes Malvadeza!
Vini Junior. The best in the world!
Whoa!
I was just a kid who liked
playing soccer barefoot
in the streets of So Gonalo.
Getting here means a great deal to me.
-["Gratido" continues playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[shouting indistinctly]
It's a pleasure for me to play with
all of these players, to play for
[crowd, in Spanish]
Golden Ball! Vinicius, Golden Ball!
[Tat] To hear
the most demanding fan base in the world
chanting that you're
the world's best player
That right there, says it all.
-["Gratido" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[announcer] What a cross.
What a ball from Vini.
Go! Vini does it again!
[Vini] I improve with every game,
and in each game I do things better.
The next step is winning the World Cup.
[announcer] Goal!
[Vini] I want to put my country on top,
make all Brazilians proud,
and be the happiest man on earth.
'Cause when you win a World Cup,
it's not just you who's happy,
it's the entire country as well.
-["Gratido" continues playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[announcer] It's with Kylian Mbapp,
through ball to Vini Junior,
in front of goal!
Goal!
Lunin moves it forward quickly,
passes it on to Vini Junior!
He's flying!
The goalkeeper hasn't come out!
Vini's gonna be face-to-face with him.
Go Vini!
[crowd roaring]
I'LL DO IT 10X IF I HAVE TO.
THEY AREN'T READY.
-["Set Vini JR." playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
VINI JR.
[cheering]
MEETING THE CHILDREN
VINI JR INSTITUTE
This one.
Where are we going?
CHARITY AUCTION
VINI JR INSTITUTE
[man] How did you get the items?
Did you tell people,
"I'm holding an auction."
"Let's do some good?"
I'm not taking requests.
[man laughs]
[man 1] Five hundred ten, bidder one.
-[man 1] Six hundred.
-[man 2] Six hundred. Bidder six.
[man 1] Two forty.
A photo?
DIFFERENCE ENRICHES US
RESPECT UNITES US
TO VINI JUNIOR
WITH ALL OUR LOVE
[applause]
[lyrics in Portuguese continue]
[announcer] The ball to Vini Junior!
-[funky dance music playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[tense music playing]
[distant clattering]
[Vini] I've been playing soccer
since I can remember.
It's what I enjoy the most.
On vacation, I play soccer.
At home, I'm playing soccer video games.
When I'm on my phone, I'm watching soccer.
Everything I know is from soccer.
And the most important things I've learned
have come from soccer.
Building character, connecting with fans
Soccer gives you all of that.
[crowd chanting, cheering]
Without the fans,
it's a whole different stadium. [laughs]
Ah!
I don't know how to describe it.
What can I say? It's my home.
I feel more at home here than I do
in my house.
[crowd roaring]
[bright, rhythmic music playing]
[crowd chanting]
[bright, rhythmic music intensifies]
For me, he's the number one.
There are other players.
But the determining factor is Vinicius.
[crowd roaring]
When he has the ball, he's so fierce,
so determined to get past his man,
and he's so direct to go for goal.
[crowd cheering]
[bright, rhythmic music continues]
[crowd roaring]
[man 1] The way Vini plays is fun,
full of dribbling,
and always looking
to take players one-on-one.
[crowd roaring]
On the field, he's electric.
Off the field, he's pure joy.
[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
Our rivals know
that he's a player to to to watch out
because he can destroy you
in any in any moment of the game.
[man 2] Down there, it's like
a pickup game. Nothing intimidates him.
-[upbeat music continues]
-[no audible speech]
If you mark him closely,
he'll use his body.
If you mark him from afar,
he'll destroy you.
[Vini shouts]
[man 2] How many fouls
have been committed against him
that VAR didn't call?
How many times
have they nearly broken his leg?
An injury is the worst thing in the world.
That's when you have to train harder,
work harder, and you can't even play.
[dramatic music playing]
[man 3] Switch!
Vinicius doesn't require any rest.
Because physically, he's a machine.
[woman 3] Vini's story's very different
from any other players.
All the adversity has made him stronger.
[woman 2] And he never gave up.
He never did.
[man 4] He doesn't have what it takes
to play in Real Madrid's attack.
[announcer] Vinicius Junior is
the 2017 version of Negueba.
I was criticized so heavily,
and I obviously wasn't prepared for it.
[man 5] Pressure on Vinicius was there
from the moment
he began playing professionally
and there were racist
attacks from day one.
[crowd chanting] Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!
Monkey! Monkey! Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!
[woman 2] I began seeing pictures of him.
And I wasn't there to hug my son.
What could I do when I saw
the footage of him crying
and looking up at the sky?
[man 6] What can I say to Vini
in that moment?
What can we do
other than fight the way he's fighting,
standing his ground, speaking out?
[man 5] Having gone through
everything he has,
for me, that's
what sets Vinicius apart his resilience.
I made it out of a neighborhood in Brazil
where you either become
a criminal, or you
have to work really hard to
[crying]
[intense, rhythmic music playing]
[crowd roaring]
VINI JR.
And the Best FIFA Men's Player of the Year
is
Vinicius Junior!
Congratulations.
[dramatic music playing]
I don't even know where where to begin.
Because this reality was so distant,
it just seemed impossible to get here.
I never dreamt of being
the best player in the world.
That I could possibly make it this far
and be put onto the same list
as all idols I grew up watching on TV.
It seemed impossible,
but when you get to Real Madrid,
you realize anything is possible.
7 YEARS EARLIER
[funky music playing]
Today, we're here
to introduce Vinicius Junior,
who is the greatest hope
for the future of soccer in Brazil.
[reporter] Vinicius Junior was officially
introduced by Real Madrid,
with the backing
of President Florentino Prez.
I'm ready to sacrifice a lot to show
that I deserve this opportunity.
Sacrifice isn't anything new in my life.
I come from a very humble family
which I'm very proud of
because of all they have done for me.
[announcer shouting indistinctly]
[camera clicking]
And wearing number 28 Vinicius!
Real Madrid invested
45 million euros in Vinicius Junior.
[Vini] I used to think like a kid.
Real buying me for 45 million
was something I'd never imagined.
And once you get here,
there's the pressure and also
all the things people
are saying about you online.
You have to forget that
you cost that much.
[crowd clamoring]
[crowd roars]
I moved up really young.
So the difference in physical strength
was absolutely unreal.
I'd try to dribble and it seemed like
they were taking the ball from a child.
[man] In Brazil,
the game was a bit slower.
Here, the ball moved very quickly
and they marked me really tightly.
I didn't have
time to control it or even think.
You end up not being yourself at first.
I wasn't able to play
the way I did in Brazil when I got here.
Of course everybody wanted him to
become an extraordinary, fantastic player
from the minute he set foot in Europe.
But the truth is, that takes time.
It requires lots of work,
practice and adapting.
[crowd clamoring]
[Vini] It's the highs and lows, right?
The high of training every day
with the greatest players
and and the low of not being
at their level yet, and having to play.
Remember what you said during
your first training sessions?
-Yeah.
-"Oh, I think I"
"I don't think I'm qualified
to play with them."
[man 2] When Vini first got here, it was
very clear that he was a skilled player.
but his talent
still needed some refinement.
I mean, he was a young kid
who was superfast and great at dribbling.
But his shooting wasn't as good at first.
And once he got close to the goal,
his nerves would kick in
and affect his ability to score.
And he'd make the wrong decisions.
So when he had to shoot, he'd pass.
And when he should've passed,
he'd dribble instead.
[announcer 1] He can't shoot,
and he plays for Real Madrid!
[announcer 2] It was clear he had
an issue with decisiveness.
[announcer 3] That's why his name is
coming up in the transfer market.
Real Madrid is considering
loaning him to Arsenal or Liverpool.
You have to show up prepared,
if you don't do well, game over.
There are other players out there,
ready to take your spot.
He can't score.
-Vinicius Junior?
-Useless.
I came like this
because Vinicius runs a lot,
does bicycles, and then
swims around doing nothing. [laughs]
I was very young,
and people on the outside had no idea.
Everyone just assumes
that you're prepared enough
to handle all that criticism.
[man 3] I think that family and friends
can work as a network
of affection of sorts.
It's a way of bringing
comfort along with you
to a place where everything's gonna be
quite tough to navigate,
at least in the beginning.
[woman 1] He brought his parents,
his siblings,
and two friends that he felt
he needed there with him.
He wanted to bring five.
And his dad said, "Five's impossible!"
"There's no way."
So that's when he chose
Menegate and Wesley to come here with him.
[Wesley] When he told me, I was like,
"No way, man. Are you for real?"
And I started thinking about
how it'd even be like, you know?
'Cause this was all brand new to us,
and we were so young.
[laughing]
[laughing]
[teacher] Where is your vacation?
-Mykonos.
-Mykonos
Italy.
-Sardinia.
-And Sardinia.
Sardinia.
[teacher] Okay. Together.
-Togedinho.
-Togedinho.
-Togedinho!
-Togedinho.
[all laughing]
When we were around 14 or 15,
we'd all go out
in a group of five with ten reais.
I wonder how we managed to go out
with just ten reais
and spend the entire night
holding the same can of
Pepsi or whatever it was,
so people would think
that we were drinking all night long,
when actually, it was gone
in the first hour of the party.
Menegate, Felipe and I had
many moments like this together.
And that's the reason why
they're here with me today.
[funky music playing]
20TH BIRTHDAY
Congratulations to you
Congratulations, on this special day
Lots of happiness, many years of life
Many years of life
Congratulations!
Is this fruit?
-What?
-Is it fruit?
What were you expecting
this early in the morning?
[man] When she asked
what we should bring you for breakfast,
I thought You wanted a burger?
-Yeah? What did you expect?
-I want chocolate or something!
How many players have the courage
to create this kind of structure?
Even earning what Vini earns?
In fact, Vini is a business.
With a whole bunch of employees. Tons.
I'm Vini's "no" man.
Douglo, no cell phones now.
Step aside now,
'cause things are about to get serious.
Okay. Thanks. See you.
Knowing the time to cut a dinner short
'cause Vini has a set bedtime.
I kinda do it all.
It's a full-spectrum job.
From being on the red carpet
to cleaning a bathroom, if needed.
I'm here to do whatever needs doing.
[crowd roars]
Good evening! Good evening, everybody!
Good evening, Madrid!
I saw you today, man.
People wanna see you too.
-Did you like it?
-Man, I was going, "Ooh!" [laughs]
[all laugh]
[Felipe] We left Whindersson's show.
I was driving the Audi
and Vini was in the passenger seat.
-[tense music playing]
-[siren wailing]
[Felipe] Should we pull over?
An officer stops us for no reason.
"Hands on the hood."
"Turn off the car."
Meanwhile, Vini is in the passenger seat.
So, then I ask the guy,
"Hey man,
I'm sorry, but I wasn't going fast."
"Why'd you pull us over?"
"This type of car is used in robberies
and there are suspicious people inside."
There weren't suspicious people.
There were Black people
in an expensive car. You know?
For them, Black people can't be
in expensive cars.
[announcer] Welcome to
the Second Division derby,
game number two
[woman] Real Madrid decides he trains
with the A team, but plays on the B team.
First, our youth teams
go play in Castilla,
in order to learn and understand
how to better adapt to the club's culture,
its identity and behavior.
You're playing well. Go to the B team.
Playing great? To the A team.
Are you gonna play?
You're not. You're benched.
Then you start feeling deflated,
because you barely play.
When you think you're gonna play,
someone else gets to play instead.
When you first come in, you see the level.
There's your own mental barrier
that you have to be at that level,
and that can be difficult, you know.
And for Vini, obviously,
I know it took a little bit more time
because his, probably,
style of play is different,
but it says a lot about
his mental strength and his personality
that he can take
those setbacks and then still turn into
one of the best players in the world.
[reporter] In July 2018,
he began the season at Real Madrid.
After the arrival of Solari,
Vinicius Junior has had many opportunities
to play in the first team.
[Vini] Because he's also South American,
you know?
Solari's from Argentina. He knows
how hard it is to leave Argentina
and come play here in Spain.
[woman] And he made the most
of every second Solari gave him.
So that was when Vinicius
had his first big breakthrough.
He was filling a gap
Real Madrid had at that moment.
Because he's the kind of player
that plays with joy.
He looks at the crowd
with a smile on his face,
And it makes them say, "We want you here."
[crowd roars]
They qualify for the round of 16
of the Champions League.
First game's in Holland.
Vini owns the game.
He gives Benzema an assist.
Real Madrid wins 2-1. They go home.
They're the current
three-time Champions League winners.
No one's worried.
[announcer] Good ball from Modri.
Nice pass from Benzema.
Modri to Vinicius Junior,
now he's one-on-one!
Vinicius Junior pushes it forward!
Vinicius Junior keeps hold of the ball,
kicks it, but the ball hits
the side-netting!
Ho-ho! He felt that.
[tense music playing]
And we're now seeing
Vinicius Junior limping off the field.
It feels like the wave of bad news
just keeps on piling up for Real Madrid!
[Vini] It was all very upsetting,
you know?
'Cause we were being eliminated
from the tournament,
which was the one
that mattered the most to us.
And on top of that,
I got injured and would have to be out
for like, two months without playing.
I'd never been injured before.
The second Vini was injured
I called Thiago.
-I know that--
-I play pickup games all the time!
I go out and play and never get hurt!
-But here I get injured?
-No. Listen.
-Without the ball.
-It's not about that.
-It's about activating your body to play.
-It was already activated!
-You were sitting!
-But it's up here!
-We were together.
-It's all right here.
I know it is! Come on.
Let's do this. Really quick.
Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Stop.
Thirty-five. You spent a long time in
[Vini] I knew you were
gonna say that again.
The first two rounds I did, I crushed it.
No, the first two were high.
You'll see it in the video.
-[Wesley] Seriously?
-I know. He's the only one doing this.
-[Thiago] No, it's--
-Him and airplane pilots. Am I a pilot?
-Come on.
-[Thiago] The focus is performance.
But also, injury prevention.
There's an indicator that shows that
if you reach a pilot's level,
you have a much lower chance of injury.
I guess I'll be flying a plane soon.
What about the ball? Nowhere in sight.
[Thiago] When I got here,
he was obviously upset.
But I didn't find someone
that was defeated.
I found someone who was
very determined to get through it.
[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
[Thiago] Four, five, six,
seven, eight, nine, ten!
Okay, take a break.
[exhaling]
[Tati] That injury was absolutely crucial.
It made Vini come to the realization
that his body is a machine.
[Thiago] Hold it! Three! Four!
[Tati] He starts
taking better care of himself.
[beeping]
[Thiago] Go, go, go. Harder, harder,
harder, harder, harder, harder!
Come on. There! Good, good, good, good!
Good, Vini. Very good.
[panting]
[reporter] After two months,
Vinicius will play again for Real Madrid,
despite being injured
during that fateful game.
He'll return with three games remaining.
[Vini] Then, Zidane arrives.
-And it was back to square one again.
-[man] One.
[Vini] New coach, new year.
And Rodrygo had a great start.
He scored on his first game.
With him playing, there were now
three of us in the same position.
Me, Hazard, and Rodrygo.
The change at the moment is
that there are other important players,
And I have to choose.
It's my role and that's
not gonna change.
It's definitely one of
Vini's hardest seasons because
he played less,
he had less time on the field,
and when a player isn't playing,
the first thing to go is his confidence.
[delicate, somber music playing]
[man] I remember seeing him
checking his phone, and
kind of tossing it
on the rug on the floor,
and just lying there, watching TV,
staring at nothing.
Then we knew he hadn't made the roster.
When I got here,
he was already with Zidane.
In that first year,
what I was filming was
a completely different reality from today.
We'd be there in the house
waiting for Friday to come
so we could see the roster.
And when it came out and he was
on the bench, we'd celebrate!
We had no idea if he was gonna play.
[Vini] I wasn't scoring many goals,
and every day I'd ask
to practice finishing.
He was there with me every day.
-He was the one who convinced you to mark.
-He'd always get me to mark, to defend.
He showed me videos to convince me
that that's what I had to do.
All that decision-making
was important for him as a young player
to understand what to do, when,
in which position,
and what space into the pitch.
That entire period with Zidane
also really helped him
toughen up, you know?
And build up some resilience.
He was heavily criticized.
There was that chat
with Benzema, saying, "Hey, man."
"Don't pass to him,
because he's playing against us."
[tense music playing]
[Benzema] He just does whatever he wants.
And he never sees a through ball.
Bro, don't play to him.
Today, we have to be
very respectful to everyone
because any silly thing you say or do
will get you in trouble.
Many things are said on the field.
And that's where they should stay.
You know, ultimately,
we're a team, we're a unit.
And I believe our energy is
actually needed
for other things.
That's the kind of stuff
that happens in soccer.
It's normal. It's nothing horrible.
He's like my little brother,
so I can say that to him.
It's normal. In my opinion,
he didn't play well enough in that game.
But it's not like I'm really mad at him.
I'm mad about what he's doing on the field
because I know what he's capable of.
He came over to talk to me.
And he said that he
he said those things
because he was hotheaded and
he wanted to help me
to be more useful for the team,
because he was aware of my potential.
From day one, he's been the guy
who's helped me the most.
When we start a match,
I just know we're gonna make a difference
because we play off of each other.
And that's very important,
for us to have chemistry on the field,
And in the end, it all worked out,
because after that conversation
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 1] Vinicius facing up to Semedo
once again tonight.
Benzema.
Vinicius passes to Kroos.
Benzema shows up for it.
Vinicius finds some space
and receives the ball from Kroos.
Vinicius Vinicius Goal!
For Madrird!
Goal!
Vinicius!
[funky music playing]
[announcer 2] Did you see that?
What a kick from Vinicius!
[announcer 3 in Portuguese] Precision
pass, brilliant first touch! Vinicius!
He's at his mark.
What a goal!
[players clamoring]
[in English] He's helping us.
So, at the end of the day
and he's also an entertainer
because you pay ticket to see him play.
Come on, Vini!
Three today, Vini. Three.
Go Vini! Go!
-[man 1] Vinicius!
-[man 2] Come on!
[announcer 1] What a show!
Vini's unstoppable!
Just look at him go!
[announcer 2] From the very start,
you can tell
that Vini's game is pure street.
[kids chattering]
[Fernando] That's his style.
It's bold, it's daring, it's fun.
He's not afraid to go for it, to dribble
He's unique. He's different.
He's brought his street soccer style
into professional soccer.
[mellow electronic music playing]
34KM FROM RIO DE JANEIRO
[Vini] Anything goes here,
there's no responsibility.
Here, I kicked the ball against the wall
to learn control and to use my left foot.
I learned some dribbling
that I'd seen on YouTube.
I'd watch Neymar, Ronaldinho,
and I'd always try the moves out
against my friends.
In order to describe
everything that I've lived,
everything that all Brazilians
living in favelas have to go through,
I'd suggest going there for a day
to see what it's like.
And to try living
with eight people in a house
that has only one bedroom.
[gentle music playing]
[Fernanda] I had Vini really young.
I was 18 at the time.
Soccer's always been his thing.
As long as he had his ball,
could be a soda cap or whatever it was,
he'd always be playing with it.
He never caused any trouble.
He was with me all the time,
he always slept by my side.
Every single day, until he was 16.
She took up half the bed
and I was left with a tiny little corner
where I'd sleep every night, and
she's always been
a very important person in my life.
When my dad died,
he was about to retire.
He'd always say, "I'm gonna retire
and watch my grandson play for Flamengo."
I guess we inherited that dream.
[Vini] My biggest dream
was to play for Flamengo.
Because I'd cry over Flamengo
when I was a kid.
FLA YOUTH SCHOOL
FLA CUP 2012
[woman] He was about five or six years old
when he got here.
And just like many other kids,
he had dreams of becoming a soccer player.
Vini was always looking for the ball.
He'd keep it all day if you'd let him.
He was always very quiet and calm.
The minute he set foot on the field,
he was an entirely different kid.
There, he would completely let loose.
He was an untamed lion on the field.
Once he was on the field,
he'd just complain and fight.
[tense, energetic music playing]
[crowd clamoring]
[Douglonez] When he steps onto the field,
he feels everything.
If anger shows up, he'll feel it,
and he'll for sure let it out.
I'd say Vini is my laid-back persona,
and Malvadeza is
when I'm a lot more turned up.
[announcer 1] Vini drives at speed
for the first time What?!
The referee points for a goal kick
and gives him a yellow card.
[announcer 2] Vinicius Junior is
pressuring them. He's getting in closer,
but he can't stay there.
When he sees someone giving him
an opening to get inside their head,
he'll annihilate them.
I don't get paid to be nice.
I get paid to get out there and score.
[crowd clamoring]
[no audible speech]
[blowing whistle]
[no audible speech]
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 3] Vini is talking
a whole lot out there!
I've always said to him,
"Don't talk to the referee or the crowd."
"You need to resolve things on the field."
I've also told Vini,
"Don't stop
if the ref doesn't blow the whistle."
There's no point in stopping and waiting
for the referee to whistle
if he doesn't think
that you've been fouled.
We don't want him
talking to the ref all the time.
We want to see him
playing like he can play,
and that's what we all enjoy.
-[energetic music playing]
-[crowd cheering]
[announcer] Vinicius Junior!
He pushes it! Here comes Vini!
Goal!
[Vini] Here I am,
best player of the match trophy.
And I'm very happy about it.
[crowd cheering]
[crowd roaring]
He's always been like that.
He dances, he's playful.
-["20 Minutinhos Pisto" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[Vini] I've danced since I was a kid.
Every time there was a party in my hood,
there also was a dancing competition.
Even though I've always been shy,
I would go up on the stage.
I really admire Vinicius,
because I also grew up dancing.
It's something I love,
but I've never had the nerve to do it
'cause I was
afraid of what people would say.
People are used to seeing Vini
during games.
They see the exceptional player
that he is, the star, right?
But in the locker room and in the hallway,
he's the guy who always
makes us smile every single day.
[players shouting joyfully]
[announcer] Here we go. It's dance time!
Moving in all directions.
[man 1] He is from Brazil,
and Brazilians like to have fun.
So I would characterize him
as a joyful guy.
The joyful way that we celebrate
isn't even Vini's.
Neymar and Ronaldinho did it before.
[man 2] Vini wasn't the first player
to ever dance.
Maybe the thousandth.
Brazilians, Africans, and that's where
all the prejudice we have here stems from.
If you want to dance samba,
go to the Sambadrome in Brazil.
But here, you have to
respect your colleagues
and stop acting like a monkey.
What I'm trying
The first big statement Vini ever made
came when he was discussed on a talk show.
Some guy said that he needed
to quit acting like he was a monkey.
[reporter 1] The soccer world responds
after Vinicius Junior is
the target of racism.
[reporter 2] Vinicius Junior found support
on social media
with the hashtag "#BailaViniJr."
[man] It became a global commotion.
And there came a time when Vini said,
"Man, I've gotta say something."
As long as the color of the skin is
more important than the sparkle in my eye,
there will be war. I don't usually
publicly respond to criticism.
I'm attacked and I stay silent.
I'm praised and I stay silent.
But I will repeat this for you, racists.
I will not stop dancing.
-["Eu Fiz o Jogo Virar" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd cheers]
[man 1] When he does a dribble
or a bicycle kick,
some other thing he does,
it's not to provoke people
It's because he likes to do those things.
It's not meant to disrespect anyone.
[announcer] Vini Junior. Brilliant!
Absolutely brilliant.
[man 2] The main feature
of Vini's play is dribbling.
Man, if he can't dribble,
what's he gonna do?
Just go through the motions?
His Brazilian flair would be wasted.
Should he just run, cross into the box
and go back to defend? Is that it?
[crowd clamoring]
[man in crowd] Go get a banana!
Go get a banana!
[Tat] The away matches
were becoming unbearable.
[crowd booing, grunting]
There was an issue at every match
and people were blaming him.
They said he was provoking them.
[reporter] On the eve of the derby
against Atltico Madrid,
a doll wearing the Brazilian's jersey
has been hung by the neck from a bridge.
For many, many years in Spain,
there were very few Black soccer players.
As Black soccer players
started coming to Spain,
just like with anything new,
the idiots, the racists,
and all the intolerant people
focused solely on that.
[crowd clamoring]
[commentator] No more. No more.
[Moya] They sang the "monkey" chant
in all stadiums to Samuel Eto'o,
one of Barcelona's star players.
In some ways, it's similar
to what is happening to Vinicius.
Due to numerous racist incidents,
Roberto Carlos is reconsidering
whether to stay in Spain next season.
MONKEY
[Carlos] In my days as a player,
I was afraid of speaking up.
Sometimes you're afraid to speak up
and have them say,
"This guy is stealing someone else's job
and now he's complaining about racism?"
But it's true.
It was there for everyone to see.
I experienced that in Spain.
When I dribbled, they'd hit me,
they'd insult me.
Oh, yeah, for sure they were racist.
You're racist.
Because he's a racist. Come on!
That's how we are as Brazilians.
We don't know how to fight. We just don't.
It's not our style to lash out
or to intimidate others.
Our style is having
the gift of playing soccer.
[aggressive music playing]
[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd cheering]
[Fernando] Vinicius is the kind of guy
who lives and breathes his job.
[Menegate] It's mine! Call it! It's you!
[man shouts] Yeah!
"Some things'll never change."
Tupac! As Tupac used to say.
[aggressive music continues]
[men clamoring, laughing]
So bad, bro.
It's lack of training, man.
[announcer] Cross. It's a low ball.
It falls to Andr.
It's back with Flamengo.
-Come on.
-Goal! Son of a bitch!
[men shouting, clamoring]
[music fades]
[crowd roaring, singing]
[Vini] Ever since I got to Flamengo,
I've always been among the top players.
I've always, without question,
paid close attention to my teachers.
-We're champions.
-We're champions.
-Champions.
-Champions, dude.
-Champions.
-Champions.
-Champions.
-[man] Show us your medals.
[Vini] I played on one of the best
youth teams that Flamengo's ever had.
And they'd say,
"Only two or three will ever make it."
And I was like, "No way. Impossible!"
[man 2] He doesn't fit the typical profile
of the boys at this stage
because it's very easy
to fall into the clichs about
how the poor kid is trying to find a way
to ascend socially through the game.
Not that it's not true,
but if you highlight
that aspect of it too much,
you can end up hiding
a much harsher reality.
By leaving out the thousands of kids
that end up not making it.
[Vini] It kept narrowing down,
and fewer players
made it to the next level.
And every time,
you would have to give up doing even more.
So that it could all work out.
He missed a lot of his childhood.
When we had a party to go to,
he couldn't come.
And when he did come,
he knew he couldn't stay for too long.
I remember when he was first called up
to the national team.
He was on the youth team.
[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
SOUTH AMERICAN U-17 CHAMPIONSHIP
[crowd cheering]
[players yelling]
[man 3] Go on, Vini! Vini! Go on! Go on!
[Vini] The South American
Under-17 Championship was unreal.
I was way above the other players.
No other player has had before or after
that U-17 Championship,
a performance like his in that tournament.
Top scorer, goal scorer and best player.
And thats's when the European clubs
start scrambling to sign Vini.
I had lunch with City,
had lunch with Chelsea.
Went for a drink with Tottenham
Many offers came in.
But they only told me about two,
to make it easier. [chuckles]
I just say yes or no,
and where I wanna go.
It was just completely overwhelming,
because in one month,
everyone's life changed.
Vinicius's Flamengo's and ours.
[reporter] Flamengo and Real Madrid made
a deal, for the Jewel of Gvea.
[Peixoto] It's hard to believe, isn't it?
I mean, 45 million euros
for a 16-year-old kid
who hadn't yet played professionally.
FIFA allows a deal to be made
with the team a player is with,
before they turn 18.
But the player will only sign it
after their 18th birthday.
[Fred] With the sale agreement settled,
he renews his contract with Flamengo.
I'm very happy with everything
that's going on in my life
and with everyone's support at Flamengo.
-I've just signed my first contract.
-[players cheering]
Being able to
financially support my whole family
was extremely gratifying.
And that was only possible
because of soccer.
My dad could move up at his job,
but he wouldn't earn much
because he didn't have an education.
And my mom had to take care of us.
Then one day he said to me,
"Hey! Why don't you just manage me
instead of working?"
You know that kind of thing can happen
when your son's a soccer player
and starts earning more than you do.
So what do you do?
Huh?
That's when it gets tricky.
What do you do
when your son earns more than you do?
Who's in charge of the house?
How do you deal with that?
But, no.
He he's always been very chill about it.
I was already so happy with everything
and being able to debut at the Maracan
with Flamengo fans screaming my name.
All my family and friends were there.
I remember we bought, like, 100 tickets.
MAY 13TH, 2017
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer 1]
Vinicius Junior, 16 years old,
is selected for the squad
for the first time.
[Luana] Then they announced it
"Vinicius Junior is coming on."
When it said that oh, Lord.
We got to live his dream,
which was to make it to Flamengo.
One of the best day's in my family's life.
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 2]
Vinicius Junior has been called.
[announcer 3] It sounded
like a goal celebration down here.
[announcer 3] The fans are
on their feet, clapping.
-Vinicius Junior is coming on!
-[Vini] I was 16.
And had just played on the youth team,
with no fans, no nothing.
The path from behind the goal
to Z Ricardo took forever
because I didn't want to go on.
I was so nervous.
[applause]
[Luana] I have a video where I screamed,
"Dad, he made it!
What you said came true!"
He said my nephew would play for Flamengo
when he was 18,
and it was even sooner than that.
I have that date right here.
[emotional music playing]
Uh
[Vini] I have it tattooed right here.
It's the date when everything changed.
It marks the moment
that changed my history in soccer.
The day I began playing professionally
and signed
with the greatest club in the world.
[Tat] His rise was truly meteoric.
How could he possibly become
a starter for Flamengo?
He did it.
How can he be
one of the best on the team? He did it.
-[funky dance music playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd roaring]
[crowd roaring]
[Fernando] Vinicius is
the face of Flamengo,
the face of Rio de Janeiro.
He embodies the Maracan.
And he's the embodiment
of Brazilian soccer.
[Douglonez] He's the ultimate story
of Rio de Janeiro,
of the Black man from the favela,
the dancer filled with contagious energy.
And at the same time,
he's a dedicated professional.
[Vini] I never thought about Real Madrid
while I was playing for Flamengo.
I was living my dream
of playing for the club I'd always loved.
When he turned 18,
he could go to Europe to play.
It was mid-season here,
Flamengo was top of the table.
Just the thought that you'd have to leave
It's rough.
[crowd roaring]
[crowd, in Portuguese] Stay, Vinicius!
Oh oh oh-oh
[Vini, in English] I knew it was
my last game at the Maracan.
And the fans were shouting for me to stay.
[crowd in Portuguese] Oh, stay Vinicius
Oh, stay Vinicius
Oh oh-oh
[tender music playing]
[in English] So,
today I'm saying goodbye, to
to go after my dreams and
fulfill all the other dreams
I have for my life.
I'm going to Real Madrid, and to
to Europe, to a different culture,
which won't just help me, but
will also help all my family
and the people that love me
and are always with me.
And I have to say thank you
to every single one of them.
SPAIN
-[man] Going up?
-[Tat] Yeah, let's go.
Let's wake him up. Give him a fright.
Wait. Wake him up? Really?
-Is he alone?
-[Tat] He is, yeah.
[laughs]
[Tat] Here. [whistles]
[whistling]
-[Tat] Wakey, wakey!
-Oh, my goodness.
[man] You wake up this easy?
[all laughing]
[man] What's up?
[Vini] Grab me some shorts.
Hey, what's up?
-You good?
-I'm fine.
-All good.
-And London?
I saw your photo with with Jay-Z.
That's awesome.
One hell of a show.
-Fuck, that was awesome.
-[Tat] So cool.
[man] Put some shorts on.
He scared me. [chuckling]
Out of nowhere.
You know, normally, I don't freak out
when I meet other players or celebrities.
I'm usually very cool about it,
but with Ronaldo and Ronaldinho,
I just can't get used to it.
Because we all know that after Pel,
he's our greatest player.
When I'm out there on the field,
the things he's told me come to mind.
And just yesterday, with Kylian's goal,
I was able to do a Ronaldo-style dribble.
And I really hope that I was
able to make him proud.
TO VINI JR.
A BIG HUG FROM YOUR FRIEND RONALDO
There you go. That's it, you know.
Scoring a goal is
How many years have you been here?
Five years. Nearly five.
And you've been scoring goals
for two, right?
Yeah.
Yeah, and a goal gives you
a lot of confidence for the next game.
"Oh, I don't need to score
in the next game."
When you're cool about it,
is when you score.
But when you're thinking about scoring
No, and there's also that trick
to throw the defender's rhythm off,
because when the guy tries
to race against you, like Walker,
he's fast as hell,
but if you do that little trick
and go again, he'll fall behind.
It's tough if he catches up,
but then you just do it again. Screw it.
To one side, then the other.
Eventually, he'll throw up from dizziness.
[all laughing]
-Seriously, man, really good. Congrats.
-Thanks.
One heck of an evolution.
-[man on TV] Lucas Paquet
-[Vini] Right there. Who got it right?
[man 2] Do you know the whole squad?
-[man on TV] Forwards Bruno Henrique.
-[man 2] Coutinho.
-Flamengo, Bruno Henrique.
-[man 2] David Neres, Ajax.
-[man 2] Vinicius Junior.
-[all cheering]
[Menegate] Hell yeah! Fuck!
My dream is to be able to help
the Brazilian team as much as Pel did,
as much as Zico.
Like all the greats
who have represented the national team
and have had
incredible careers like Ronaldo,
who won two World Cups
and reached three finals.
That's my dream.
[table rattling]
[men] Oh
I'm Vinicius Junior,
I'm 19 years old.
I'm from Rio de Janeiro
and I play for Real Madrid.
[group singing "Falta Voc" in Portuguese]
QATAR WORLD CUP
[singing continues]
[all continue singing in Portuguese]
[percussive instruments playing]
[all singing in Portuguese]
[crowd clamoring]
[Vini] I was so nervous.
It was my first World Cup match.
And I knew that the entire country
had their eyes glued to their TVs
to watch these 22 players on the field.
[der] It's a unique feeling.
It's something that represents
so much to many people.
And we all know the weight
that the yellow jersey carries.
[announcer] Turning on.
-Vinicius Junior, fine save! Bundled in!
-[crowd roaring]
Awesome!
Come on!
[energetic music playing]
Let's go! Let's go! Come on!
[announcer] Pushing Lazovi back
and finding Richarlison!
[crowd roaring]
Now that is Brazil!
BRAZIL 2 X 0 SERBIA
[camera clicks]
How do you feel now?
Wherever you go, everyone's filming you.
I watch what I say more.
[both laugh]
[all singing, chanting]
-[announcer 1] Here's Raphinha.
-[announcer 2] What a fantastic ball.
BRAZIL 1 X 0 SWITZERLAND
[crowd groaning]
[energetic music continues]
[laughing]
Hey, Juninho.
-[man 1] You'll be a champion.
-[man 2] Champion.
[man 1] Vini!
-[woman] Vini! Vini!
-[man 2] Vini! Vini!
[announcer 1] It's knockout time.
Brazil vs. South Korea.
[announcer 2] And keep on going too,
and he has plenty to pick out!
[announcer 1] Go on, Vini!
Go on! Go on! Goal!
For Brazil!
[crowd cheering]
[joyful music playing]
[announcer 1] Vinicius.
Paquet!
BRAZIL 4 X 1 SOUTH KOREA
Four-nil Brazil!
[laughing]
[announcer 2] And the quarterfinals begin.
Brazil versus Croatia.
[tense music playing]
[announcer 1] Vinicius Jnior
charges forward again.
Can he make it count?
-[announcer 1 groans]
-[crowd groaning]
[announcer 1] Driving forward,
still Vinicius Jnior.
-This is Neymar.
-[crowd cheering]
Brilliant challenge. Wait, there's chaos!
-[crowd groaning]
-Livakovi steps in to block.
Wow, that was brave.
Now he's got a fresh test.
Rodrygo steps up in his place.
Extra time looms.
It could all come down to penalties.
Marquinhos has to score, and he hasn't!
He's missed it!
Croatia did it again!
PENALTY SHOOTOUBRAZIL 2 X 4 CROATIA
What an unbelievable
footballing fairy tale this is.
[somber music playing]
[Vini] It was the saddest day of my life,
for sure.
One mistake we made,
cost us four years of hard work.
After the game's over, you say,
"Damn, I could've gone for that ball.
I could've passed better."
[sobbing]
[car horn blaring]
[Carlos] No one likes losing.
Players don't go on the pitch
wanting to lose or be substituted.
But there are some days
when the night is really tough.
We left the game
and went to the apartment
where we were staying.
All he said was to get him out of there.
He wanted to leave.
He was fouled.
If the game stops there, it's over.
Substitutions take at least two minutes
by the time everyone leaves.
[man] The ref would add two more minutes.
The guy has to kick it long.
In the end, if he takes off Ney
and puts Bremer on,
the game's over, finished.
Just one shot on goal.
The game was dead, it was already over.
[pensive music playing]
Remarkably, Real Madrid gets it very right
by appointing Ancelotti.
He was exactly who they needed
to manage a locker room
with such a range of ages,
nationalities, cultures,
and so many differences.
[Rodrygo] He's a coach
that handles the locker room very well.
Much more than just tactics
and technicalities,
he can sometimes win a game
just by the culture he creates.
For me, Carlo Ancelotti is like a father.
It must feel good
to have someone like that as your manager
because he is like your dad.
You feel the confidence.
You feel the love.
Ancelotti, more or less,
gives us the freedom to do what we want,
but always responsibly.
[laughs]
The last thing we want to do
is to take away his ability
in one-on-one situations.
He needs to be comfortable on the field.
[Douglonez] Maybe let's walk
in the direction of where you play.
-But I prefer it here.
-[Douglonez] You do?
Yeah, 'cause this side
attacks towards our fans. [laughs]
-[Douglonez] Let's go there, then.
-Over here?
I like here 'cause of the fans,
but I prefer there
'cause it's far from Ancelotti.
[laughs]
'Cause when I'm here,
he can complain to me.
Over there, I just pretend I'm listening.
[laughs]
[Douglonez] Ancelotti gave him two tools.
The first one, was confidence.
In the sense,
"That's how you play, so go do that."
And the other one was,
"This team is going to play in a way
that gets to fully explore your potential
in this space on the left."
And the two things clicked.
And he was scoring
from the start of the season.
He earned his spot
and he became unstoppable.
-[crowd cheering]
-[upbeat, rhythmic music playing]
[announcer 1] He got himself
in a pickle there.
The ball's been stolen.
Vinicius cuts it back. Benzema!
[announcer 2] A defensive slip.
And he punishes them!
[announcer 1] Vini Junior makes a run!
It's now him against Danilo. Vini Junior!
He squares it to Modri.
Benzema, it's looking good!
And goal!
[announcer 2] Goal!
And that's how comebacks happen.
Because of everything that team had done,
game after game in the Champions League.
And it all started with that incredible
turnaround against Paris Saint-Germain.
[announcer 1] Into the box!
Vinicius crosses it to Benzema!
[Tati] And the best part is
that he understands
that he can be the supporting star,
with his assists.
Because he knows,
every time he gets the ball in the box,
Benzema will score.
[announcer 1] Whoa!
[announcer 2] Goal!
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 1] Oh, my goodness gracious!
[announcer 2] Oh, my God!
What a beautiful play!
It was amazing to see!
Very beautiful! Look at this goal!
Goal!
Ha ha!
[Ancelotti] You could lose a semifinal.
What you can't lose is the confidence
that you'll reach the final.
[announcer 1] City come forward.
He cuts it back behind Gabriel.
Bernardo Silva! He leaves it to Mahrez!
[Tat] Seventy minutes have gone by.
How can they possibly turn it around?
[announcer 1] Benzema right in the middle!
Goal!
And when Rodrygo put the ball
on the center spot to restart,
the fourth official holds up
the board showing "six minutes."
And it felt like
we had just scored a goal!
[crowd cheering]
[Vzquez] Whenever we enter the Bernabu
and see the stadium full of people,
and they're all cheering you on,
we like to say it's like
having an extra player on the field.
[announcer 1] Real Madrid keeps
pressuring them.'
Here comes Rodrygo! Rodrygo! Goal!
[announcer 2] Look at that!
Rodrygo cuts it back from the right,
and it's intended for him.
Rodrygo plays it inside,
it goes to Benzema!
He goes down! Penalty!
Real Madrid inch towards the final.
It's Benzema!
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
[shouting, cheering]
[in Portuguese] Yes. Yes. Yes.
We're going to Paris!
Yes. Yes. Yes.
We're going to Paris!
[announcer 1] Long live Real Madrid!
Long live the kings of Europe!
The game ends at the Bernabu!
[Vini] We hugged each other
and started crying.
And we looked at each other again.
And we hugged again,
and we just couldn't believe it.
We were in disbelief.
We were in the final
of the Champions League.
In that moment,
it felt like seeing a movie
with everything we'd been through
from the beginning.
all the difficulties,
and all the doubts they had about us.
It was a magical night,
but after one heck of a storm. [laughs]
Shit, we're in the Champions League final.
That means we made it!
We've become real players.
[pensive music playing]
The days were slow.
I tried my best
not to think about the final.
But all day,
I just thought about the final.
Time stood still.
[buzzing]
[man] Is it easier now?
-No.
-[man] Hard, huh?
It depends on how it goes.
If we score early, then yeah.
Otherwise, they'll come after me.
-[man] Then it's rough.
-Yeah.
If they all come for me, it gets tough.
[phone bleeps]
Vini, we're here
to wish you luck.
We know that
Good luck!
you're really nervous
Good luck!
[laughs] Bernardo!
[in Portuguese] Yeah,
and God's will be done and Amen.
SIBLINGS AND NIECE
[Bernardo] Good luck!
PARIS
FRANCE
[crowd clamoring]
[Vini, in English] I was nervous
until the game started.
After the game starts,
you just relax a little
and you kind of forget
that you're in a final.
And Liverpool,
once again ran all over us.
[announcer] He controls it in the area.
Alexander-Arnold pushes forward,
gets clear of Mendy, and crosses it in.
The touch! Courtois!
Look at Man. He gets past the first,
gets past the second, Man is charging!
He's hit the post and Courtois!
Off his head!
Off Courtois's back! Again!
[Vini] Thibault put in
one of the best performances
in the history of the Champions League,
stopping God knows how many shots.
But once again, they made the mistake
of not finishing the game.
They couldn't score.
[announcer] Valverde,
it's Real Madrid's now.
Carvajal bombs past him,
Benzema's arriving.
Valverde. The cross comes in. Vini!
Goal!
In theory it's an easy goal.
But it's actually very difficult.
You don't know if the goalkeeper
can reach the ball or not,
so you have to hit it hard
so that the goalkeeper doesn't get to it,
but you don't want to sky it.
At crucial moments, it often happens
that you're already thinking
about your celebration.
And you end up missing that goal,
which, theoretically, for those watching,
is very easy.
[crowd roaring]
[Vini] After the goal,
I had no idea where to run.
I didn't know what to do,
or where my family even was anymore.
I just wanted to look at them,
send them a hug,
and dedicate this goal to them.
That goal in the final had more
impact than Vini's entire season.
A great season. This season was
very long and full of comebacks.
We have to celebrate
our accomplishments for this season.
[Felipe] That moment changed
both his life and career.
His life after that goal was different.
One of fame, recognition,
and new standing as an athlete.
That's when Vini showed everybody
the player he really is.
A decisive player who makes a difference,
who knows how to win games,
and who can win titles.
And after some challenging years,
at the end of the day,
that goal will be remembered as the one
that secured his first Champions League.
He has done extremely well
in the 2021 season.
He's shown everybody
exactly what he's capable of
and who he is.
The goal in that final
was Vini channeling
everything he's ever been through
and kicking it into that ball.
He then rises
to a completely different level.
That moment marks
his transformation from a great player
into the global superstar he became
after that Champions League final.
["Eu Fiz o Jogo Virar" playing]
Oh, my God!
[lyrics in Portuguese]
[cameras clicking]
Yeah. I'm ready now.
That one over there is really cool.
[all clamoring]
Yeah, I like this. Looks good.
"Classy's" the word you're looking for.
DANCE, VINI JR
[all shouting, clamoring] Vini!
-[all clamoring]
-[cameras clicking]
-[man] It's so awesome to meet you.
-[woman] Vini, look!
It's a dream to meet you. Thank you.
-[man] Vinicius!
-[cameras clicking]
[man 2] Vinicius!
-Here's a kiss! I love you! Thank you!
-[van starts]
Thank you very much!
-[laughs]
-[Douglonez] They're gonna follow us.
They're still following us.
And he's riding a scooter!
That's not gonna be easy, man.
Look at him. [laughing]
[Douglonez] And the one driving
is getting in the way of the photographer.
[Vini chuckles] Jeez.
[distant siren wailing]
He's there.
[Douglonez] Yeah, I see him.
As if we couldn't see him from here.
-That's crazy, man.
-[Vini] Look, he grabbed his phone.
-He's probably telling the others.
-[Douglonez] For sure.
[Douglonez] If you go out to a restaurant,
everybody's gonna know about it.
His profession kind of keeps him
trapped inside of this
athlete's cage, of sorts.
He has to find ways of being
comfortable in his own home.
Because a top-level player is practically
living under house arrest, you know?
You can't go out.
[menacing music playing]
Freddy!
-[man] This is crazy.
-[Vini] Oh, damn.
Ice. Ice.
[inhaling sharply]
[laughing]
-No, I don't want it.
-[man] Let me show you.
This one's a bit short.
That one's awesome.
-Which one! This?
-That one.
I like both.
Fresh.
[both laugh]
-That's cool.
-[Vini] Did he say how much?
-[Felipe] He said they're expensive.
-[Vini] Hmm.
I'll take it off then. I'm not crazy.
How much?
Uh, for this set?
Come the price.
-Holy shit.
-[Vini] No way! Take it off. Yeah.
Take them off already. Come on.
Take them off. Quick. Take them off, man.
[steam hissing]
[Najib] It's not cooked.
When I make him beans,
I add all sorts of things
he doesn't usually eat.
Because that way
we make sure he gets
all the vitamins he needs,
and I'm constantly talking
to Thiago about all of this.
So I add lots of seasoning.
And this is the secret.
[chuckles]
[sizzling]
We have a weekly plan in place
which is based on the club's requests.
But depending on Vini's level
of wear and tear,
we have to adjust it as we go.
We're always trying to make things
as tasty as possible for him
because food is not just about
replenishing nutrients.
It's not just about
making sure he has energy to train.
It's also his social time.
It's the time when we sit down and chat.
It's a moment when he reconnects
with Brazil.
[Vini] You know,
so many players can come back,
and it's just over, man.
-Sure, man. You have no idea.
-[Menegate] I didn't remember him coming.
He had no idea how to turn it on.
They all came over.
[Menegate] Like, if you're
not willing to fail.
It's more than the prize.
He's gonna work? [laughs]
But if you asked him
Look at that.
Hey, Douglonez.
[laughs]
I see. But then Vin is even
paying tribute to you there.
[laughing]
But one thing that bothers me
[Tat] Uh-huh.
as an outsider watching the game,
is the way a club's captain is selected.
Who's gonna be the captain?
It's easy to use time
as the decisive factor, isn't it?
But often, that isn't a reflection
of a true leader on the field.
[Vini] But the best way
to be captain is that--
Yes, easier, not the best way.
-It's the easiest.
-[Vini] No, best.
[Thiago] You have a bunch of companies.
You're a successful guy.
Would you pick the employee
that's been at your company the longest--
It's different, Thiago. The boss,
the head of the club is the president.
He's not the club captain
on on on the field.
You're muddling it, man.
You can't compare it to a company.
-Totally different.
-You're asking not just on the pitch?
But off as well? The years give you that--
Maybe in three years, Vini can be captain.
-Oh, I'm not old enough to be captain.
-[Tat] Exactly!
I don't know. In ten years,
you won't be the same person you are now.
-[Tat] Of course not.
-Nor will Valverde. Or Bellingham.
So, it's good man. That's why it's good.
The guy already knows everyone
and knows the situation.
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer] Vinicius Junior!
[crowd cheering]
[Tati] Vini wants to be a great player.
In order to be a great player,
you need to win titles.
To win titles,
you need to have the best team.
You're not playing on your own.
[crowd roaring]
[bright, ethereal music playing]
[announcer] Valencia versus Real Madrid
has always been a very important match.
-[man 1 in Spanish] Monkey!
-[man 2 in Spanish] Asshole!
[men grunting, shouting]
[Fernando] What happened in Valencia
was extremely traumatic
Especially because Real Madrid
was already the Spanish Champion.
Then all of a sudden,
it turns into the game of the season
for reasons
completely unrelated to soccer.
MAY 21ST, 2023
What I witnessed inside of that stadium
was that every time he touched the ball
there was pressure.
There were a lot of insults
and a lot of noise.
[reporter] I've heard more than one
racist chant from the Valencia fans,
aimed at Vinicius Junior. Unacceptable!
Unacceptable!
[der] We had a corner kick.
And I asked him what happened.
He said, "That guy insulted me."
[Rodrygo] He heard a fan
call him a "monkey"
[announcer] Vini's talking to Gay,
Valencia's captain,
pointing that way and saying,
"Right there. That's him. That's the one."
[Rodrygo] In that moment,
I got really angry too.
You know, as a Black man,
it it got under my skin.
[Tat] Vini doesn't really talk much.
That's just how he is.
But there's a point where things
build up inside and he falls apart.
[crowd chanting in Spanish]
Monkey, monkey, monkey!
I was in Valencia that day.
I was in the stadium. I was it all happen.
It was a very small group of people.
who yelled racist insults at Vinicius.
[crowd chanting in Spanish]
Monkey! Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!
[crowd jeering]
[Fernanda] I was back in Brazil that day.
When the game ended,
I just couldn't stop crying.
I began seeing pictures of him.
And I was really nervous.
And I wasn't there to hug my son.
What could I do?
[crowd jeering]
You guys kept a lot of things from me.
We didn't tell her.
We had to wait in order to
We wouldn't even watch TV.
So she wouldn't get upset.
When she found out
she cried, her blood pressure went up.
To suffer that in the middle of a game
was very sad because I'm normally
so concentrated during a game
that I usually don't hear anything.
But that day it happened so many times
that I lost the will to play,
I wanted to get off the field.
Then the referee asked me to keep playing
and my teammates asked me to stay.
The attacks on Vinicius had been going on
for many months, and they kept escalating.
And the escalation was
partly due to the lack of consequences.
[announcer 1] And now,
there's a fight going on.
There's a big fight going on.
[announcer 2] Bengoechea is trying
to figure out what's just happened here.
Bengoechea will have to decide
if this was an assault.
Let's see.
He puts his hand in his pocket.
[crowd roaring]
[announcer 1] He's swapping Vinicius's
yellow card for a red one.
[pundit] There's the play itself,
which you could analyze technically
to conclude if it merits
a yellow or a red card,
but in that game,
there was already an existing
backdrop of hatred against Vinicius.
VAR edited the images
shown to the referee,
leaving out the headlock that triggered
Vinicius Junior's reaction.
[all clamoring]
[Tat] A kid being a victim of racism,
being portrayed in that moment
as the one responsible
for the whole situation.
[reporter 1] Good evening.
How do you feel about another defeat
after having already lost to Man City?
What are your thoughts?
-Yeah. Should we talk about soccer?
-[reporter] Yes.
Or something else?
What happened here today
should never happen.
-This all seems quite obvious.
-[reporter] Absolutely.
When a stadium shouts "monkey" at a player
and a coach considers taking him
out of the game for that reason,
there's something very wrong
happening in this league.
[reporter] We're on the same page.
I want you to know that.
Would you still like to talk about soccer
No. I do not want to.
He makes it clear that racism exists
and always has.
And that other Black players,
even bigger than him,
like Pel, for example,
chose to not confront it.
THIS WASN'T THE FIRST TIME
OR THE SECOND OR THE THIRD
RACISM IS NORMAL IN LA LIGA
[Gustavo] And after this whole situation,
Javier Tebas,
who's the President of La Liga,
decides to criticize Vinicius in a Tweet.
BEFORE CRITICIZING LA LIGA,
YOU SHOULD GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGH[Tebas] The outcome was what it was.
It wasn't my intention whatsoever.
I only meant to explain what was going on.
But clearly, I was mistaken
because the impact caused
was not what I intended.
And when you have good intentions,
but the impact is the opposite,
well, you've clearly done something wrong.
Sometimes, certain things happen
that end up being quite positive
when something truly significant
and relevant occurs,
creating a situation
where people can't remain silent anymore.
-["Negro Drama (Ao Vivo)" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[man 1] What we've all seen happen
today in Valencia was truly shameful.
La Liga should have stopped the game!
Real Madrid will not tolerate
racist insults against any of our players.
[chanting]
[man 2] United against racism.
[woman 1] Racism scandal
has hit Spanish football.
IT'S A RACIST COUNTRY
VINI JR
We have a real problem in this country.
[woman 2] Rio's Christ the Redeemer statue
will go dark as a symbolic gesture.
There may come a time where Black players
will just say, "I'm not going to Spain."
[woman 2] Vinicius Junior's red card
has been overturned,
ensuring he won't face suspension.
[Douglonez] Gotta win the game.
But today I'll be sitting
next to the President.
He asked me
to watch the game with him.
-[Douglonez] How was your conversation?
-It went well.
He said what he always says.
That this kind of thing
can't happen in the league.
and he'll do everything in his power
so we can make a change together.
In order for us to address
what no one's managed to change so far.
[announcer] All the Real Madrid players
wearing Vinicius's jersey.
"We're all Vinicius."
"Enough is enough," that's the slogan.
RACISTS OUT OF SOCCER
That's being displayed everywhere
at the Santiago stadium.
He's sacrificing some of the greatness
he could achieve as a player
for an even greater cause.
-[crowd chattering]
-[cameras clicking]
Vini, is the fight
against racism in your life
even at the expense of soccer?
Is it greater than your soccer ambitions?
Oh, it definitely is, because in soccer,
there are so many people,
so many players that are better than me,
who've been here before.
And what I want
is to make people
in this world evolve and improve.
I want us to have equality,
that, in the near future,
we will have fewer cases of racism.
And that Black people are able to have
normal lives like everyone else.
I go to the games
with my head fully in the game
so that I can do
my very best for the team,
but sometimes it's just not possible.
So, I have to concentrate really hard
every single day.
[cameras clicking]
I'm sorry.
I just want to play soccer. All I want
is to do everything I can
for my team and my family.
[announcer] Martinelli called
for the cross, up goes Vini Junior!
And the ball goes over the goal!
[announcer] Second half is underway.
One-nil Brazil after MartinellI's goal.
Gabriel takes the ball.
Plays it with his left.
Colombia's raised the pressure
on the Brazilian team.
Joo Pedro couldn't control it.
Here comes Brazil! Bruno Guimares.
Look at Vini! Down on the right.
Snchez comes in. What now, ref?
No way!
That tackle clearly calls
for a yellow card.
Poor thing.
Once again, Vini Junior's
a reason for concern.
I think the doctor
just indicated something.
Vini will no longer be able to play.
For fuck's sake!
Fernando Diniz calls on
forward Joo Pedro, number nine,
who's a former player for Fluminense
and currently plays
for Brighton in England.
This had never happened before.
In the five years we've worked together,
the only injury he had
was when I got here.
Then never again.
Now he had two muscular injuries in a row.
[announcer] Vini Junior has gone down
15 minutes in.
[Tat] He got injured
in the third game of the season,
was able to come back,
then played for Brazil,
and got injured again in that game.
I don't know if he realized
how much he could benefit from that.
But since he's always so dedicated,
he entrusts his body to Thiago.
Then Thiago's skill comes into play,
turning this moment into something
useful for the rest of the season.
[Thiago] Look at the wall,
not at the floor.
That's it! The form is looking great.
Three!
Lift those hips.
[Vini] Every bad situation
has a silver lining.
So, during these two injuries,
I focused even more
on my physical preparation.
Bend even lower. Go up. That's it.
Everybody said
that Vini came back much stronger.
That just happened
because we had the extra time to work,
without worrying about conflicting
with the team's activities.
Bend those knees.
Good one.
I use Cristiano Ronaldo, Lebron James,
and Luka Modri as examples for my team.
I don't drink, I don't smoke.
I do everything I can to stay on track
and play for as long as I possibly can.
[Tat] The whole structure
we put in place for Vini
could be used
for lots of different players.
But it wouldn't yield the same results.
So, this is the progression
from the first MRI.
[Tat] Because it depends on
him wanting it.
[Vini] Vini Junior.
[Thiago] He's in the hyperbaric chamber
for about an hour and 20 minutes,
which is when he begins
to feel the benefits
of that oxygen supplementation.
This helps him not only with his muscles
but with his entire system.
[chamber whirring, beeping]
You know, he's been out for a few weeks,
yet he's immediately regained his rhythm.
He's someone who's
completely focused on his profession.
-[Douglonez] Good game.
-[Vini] Thank you.
[reporter] Valencia and Real Madrid
will be playing again.
It'll be the first time
Vinicius Junior will be back here
after what he went through.
Valencia have decided
that the Brazilian production company
filming the documentary
will not be granted access to the stadium.
[Cortes] I understand that, at this point,
Valencia didn't want
any more problems with their supporters.
So, that's why they decided to ban
the Netflix cameras
from the Mestalla Stadium.
[crowd, in Spanish] Where is Netflix?
Netflix where are you?
Where is Netflix?
[Vini, in English] In the last game,
I didn't know
what was gonna happen in Valencia.
So, of course, it surprised me.
But not today, though. My head is clear.5
My teammates
will have my back for anything
that might happen on or off the field.
[announcer 1] It seems like
this has the potential
of being a very intense match.
[announcer 2] Vinicius protects the ball,
he's toppled over, but wins the foul.
[dramatic music playing]
Valencia fans are booing Vinicius Junior.
He's gone down. He's complaining.
He's asking for a penalty.
Gil Manzano sees it as a normal play.
There's a deflection shot from Hugo!
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
This is a dangerous attempt.
He rolls it in! Goal!
[stadium announcer] Goal!
[announcer 2] Goal for Valencia!
Carvajal wants the ball.
They cross it to Carvajal
on the right side andVini Junior!
Goal!
Hell yeah!
[hopeful music playing]
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer 2] He's created an opportunity.
The cross comes in!
Vini Malvadeza gets
his second against Valencia!
We're sure that the whole world
got to see that.
They didn't watch the game? Maybe not.
But the next day,
they all read it in the paper.
This just happened.
In that moment, we can say that
Spanish society begins to see a shift.
[newscaster] Today, a court in Valencia
handing down eight-month sentences
to three Valencia fans
who racially abused Vinicius
in a game in May 2023.
It's taken a long time
for this to come to court,
but the fact it has come to court
has never happened before,
with fans being prosecuted
for racist abuse at a Spanish game.
I'M NOT A VICTIM OF RACISM
I EXECUTE RACISTS
THIS HISTORIC SENTENCING IN SPAIN
IS FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE
LET OTHER RACISTS BE SCARED,
ASHAMED, AND HIDE IN THE SHADOWS.
IT'S FOR ALL BLACK PEOPLE.
When he makes that post,
he gets everyone involved in the debate.
He doesn't let it lie
That would be easy, wouldn't it?
To let it lie.
"Oh, I play for Real Madrid."
"Oh, never mind, it's an away game
next week at the Bernabu."
"I'm gonna be loved by the fans
and everything's cool."
No, it's not cool.
So, tomorrow is the day
of the draw for the
[Douglonez] The Champions League, man.
This is it.
Any preference?
[Vini] All the big teams
made it through, so no.
We'll see.
I'd rather we don't
get City though. [laughs]
[man] The team that is drawn first,
will play the first leg at home.
For fuck's suck. Real Madrid.
First leg's at home.
-[man] They play at home.
-[woman] They will also play at home.
[man 2] Manchester City.
Damn! Ugh.
Where's the VAR?
-[woman] It happened before.
-[man] Let's see what happens.
Now we gotta pray for one of them
to catch a cold or something.
-[woman] Let's analyze these brackets.
-It's a tough one.
[clippers buzzing]
-[Douglonez] Did you watch the draw?
-Nah, I was asleep.
I have practice this afternoon. [laugh]
[Douglonez] And what'd you think
of the results?
I just wanted to know if the first leg was
at home or away.
We're away on the second leg again.
It really sucks. But it is what it is.
[crowd clamoring]
[announcer] You're now at the home
of the Champions League!
We're ready to go!
The 16 that started the year
in contention for the title,
are now just eight!
The first 45 minutes are about to start.
Look at this, Bernardo Silva shoots!
Goal!
The score board is now live
at the Bernabu!
Every team Guardiola trains
always knows what you're gonna do.
He'll take away all your possibilities
with the ball and he'll wear you out.
[announcer 1] Camavinga.
Tries to go past Grealish,
left foot, gets a deflection!
Goal!
Ten minutes after conceding!
Hold on now!
Here comes Rodrygo. He takes it forward.
Rodrygo against Akanji.
Rodrygo!
Goal!
They've turned it around!
In only two minutes!
[announcer 2] He slows it down,
plays it to the edge of the box.
Stones lays it off to Phil Foden!
What a goal! Tying the game in Madrid!
In a game that was just crazy!
Back and forth, back and forth.
[announcer 1] Grealish is inside the box.
He plays it back.
Gvardiol is there, he threatens to
Goal!
We were all absolutely destroyed.
And I was like, "Damn, man.
We just can't beat these guys!"
[announcer 1] Vini Junior.
He switches the play to the right.
Valverde kicks it in!
[crowd roars]
[announcer 2] Goal!
What a goal!
VINI JR WITH THE ASSIST TO RODRYGO
WE WON'T SURRENDER
[Vini] Playing against the best
in the world makes you a better player.
And against the best teams,
I usually have more space.
When I play in the league, there's usually
two or three players marking me.
And it gets a bit complicated,
and I don't always get to play my game.
And in the Champions League,
no teams actually do that,
so there's more goals.
That's why people like
watching those games a lot more.
[man] He was trying to close it,
so I said, "Dude, don't close it."
"Buy another one, you idiot."
[Tat] I'm getting tired already!
[man] No you're the idiot.
[men laughing]
[pensive music playing]
-You can't drop the ball.
-That's too close.
There you go. There you go.
[laughing]
[Thiago] That's it.
Bend your knees lower.
Get closer to the bottom.
Good.
Stop when you get there
and come back again.
[music fades]
-What's up?
-Wow, man! You're looking fancy.
[chuckles]
[Tat] Your backpack's in the trunk.
See you tomorrow.
Bye now.
[announcer] The first half is
about to get underway!
Here's Bellingham with the ball!
It slips a bit. Passes to Valverde.
Vini asks for it up front.
Is the timing right?
Vini's inside the box,
crosses it to Rodrygo.
Spectacular move from Rodrygo!
Goal!
Great ball to De Bruyne! It looks good!
It was meant for Haaland! Lunin!
[tense music playing]
De Bruyne crosses it. Lunin!
Kevin De Bruyne, to Haaland.
That was really strong!
Nacho! Nacho! Almost scores on own goal!
We don't usually play this way,
defending for the whole game.
Usually, we're the ones
dictating the game,
but against Man City it's
completely different,
especially on their home turf,
with their fans.
[tense music playing]
Doku runs deep, crosses it.
Rdiger clears it.
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
I don't know who wrote
that the Champions League
isn't about surviving.
It's about not dying.
'Cause if you don't die, you can
you can then move on to the next round.
And we held on for 90 minutes
and then we had to go through extra time.
And we were all exhausted.
But we knew that if it went to penalties,
we would make it through.
[announcer] Rdiger!
With his right foot.
Ederson is in the goal.
It's Rdiger!
Goal!
[Luana] You won!
I called it. You guys won!
Good one. Congratulations.
They kept chanting, "Seven! Seven!"
But when they chanted for De Bruyne
-Oh, my God!
-[Thiago] That was badass.
It felt like
the stadium was gonna collapse!
That was so badass!
I've never seen that in a soccer stadium.
I was singing too!
Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
[all laugh]
Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!
He's still a young boy,
and I'm a bit older than him.
A bit more experienced in life,
but he's already he's a big star.
But he listens,
and for me, this makes him special.
I see him as a younger brother.
MUNICH
GERMANY
SEMIFINAL
BAYERN MUNICH X REAL MADRID
AWAY GAME
[announcer 1] Here we are in the stadium
for the Champions League semifinals!
[Felipe] It's the perfect combination.
The experience on one hand,
and youth on the other.
[crowd cheering]
[announcer 1] He's a master midfielder,
isn't he?
-[announcer 2] Gotta spread it a bit.
-[announcer 1] He passed it!
[announcer 3[ He's left Vinicius
in front of the goal!
[Kroos] I saw him
joining more the midfield.
The pass for himself
was not that most difficult pass,
but the one who made it
more easy for me was Vini with his run.
[Vini] I often make that run,
but I don't always get the ball
because sometimes I'm just too fast.
We were able to read each other.
That comes from five or six years
of playing together.
And just as we were playing our best,
they scored twice.
[tense music playing]
[announcer] What a goal!
He hammers it in with his right foot!
Goal!
They seemed to be completely done.
Bayern, all of a sudden,
scored two goals really quickly.
[announcer] He still hasn't
found space for the shot.
He decides to run with it!
Great pass and penalty!
Rodrygo wins the penalty.
Vinicius Junior is going to take it.
[crowd clamoring]
I thought about Karim
when he scored that penalty against City.
And I realized that in recent games,
Neuer had been jumping a bit early.
"So I thought,
"I'll put it in the corner."
"And if he dives early,
I'll roll it down the middle."
[announcer] Right foot!
Goal!
[Vini] It was an important game.
And it was great
to come back home without a loss.
Being able to come back to the Bernabu
for the second leg was great.
We missed playing in front of our fans.
[crowd clamoring] Vini! Vini!
Vini! Vini! Vini! Vini! Vini!
[clamoring continues]
[sirens wailing]
[crowd cheering]
[crowd chanting]
RETURN GAME
[announcer] The road to Wembley!
The first half of the game
is about to start!
A spot in the final's up for grabs
at the final before the final,
Real Madrid and Bayern Munich!
Vini Junior!
[crowd cheering]
[Tat] He's a big game player.
He thrives when there's a full house.
The bigger the pressure
the more he shines.
Vini runs with it! Vini down the left!
Vini with the cross!
Neuer!
[crowd cheering]
[announcer] Vini Junior again,
faked Kimmich.
Vini Junior gets to the byline,
and crosses!
That pass was meant for Valverde!
Look at him coming again.
Look at him go! It's wide!
Vini's coming again!
He's going for it! Look at him go!
Neuer!
[cheering]
Good ball to Vini in there!
Hits the post, bounces back!
Rodrygo! Neuer!
Now Bayern Munich comes back again,
Davies against Rdiger.
Davies shifts the ball
onto his right foot!
-[crowd cheering]
-Goal!
[Vini] It's a do or die game,
but we have the advantage
of being on our home turf,
with our families close by
and our fans here with us.
[announcer] Vini Junior!
Real Madrid are not done yet!
Neuer let's it slip!
-[crowd roaring]
-Goal!
Real Madrid just never dies!
[Gustavo] It wasn't surprising.
We saw it coming.
"Real Madrid is gonna
turn this game around."
"They're gonna do it."
[announcer] Left foot pass to Rdiger.
The ball's in the box!
[crowd roaring]
[announcer] My God!
This is unbelievable!
The referee called an offside.
Let's see what they decide now.
They will now review the goal.
Let us see. Let us see!
Let's direct our attention
to the referee for the official call.
[blows whistle]
-And the game is over!
-[crowd roaring]
Goal!
[crowd, in Spanish]
Madrid! Madrid! Madrid!
Go, Madrid!
And nothing more!
And nothing more! Go Madrid!
[murmur of voices]
[Thiago and Douglonez]
Drink it all in one gulp.
-[Thiago] Swirl it and drink what's left.
-[Douglonez] Look at that.
[Thiago] Drink it all.
Don't make that face.
[Douglonez] Look at that.
That's good. Good.
I would like to propose a toast.
In the last week of this season I was
-Feeling sick.
-[Tat] Feeling sick.
-That's right. That's right.
-[Tat] He is.
Feeling sick,
but there's one last game to play.
[all cheering, whooping]
[Vini] I was feeling really sick,
so I had to leave lunch.
Douglo was filming at the time.
I went to have a lie down and and
and all I kept thinking was,
"Oh, man, will I be okay
in the next 48 hours?"
Vini wasn't feeling very well.
He was showing
some symptoms of a viral infection.
Once we get to London, he'll be treated,
get an IV to help him recover,
and we hope he gets better
as soon as possible
so he can be at his best for the final.
Wait, Copa Amrica is
six games in total, right?
If you reach the final,
it's six games, isn't it?
[pensive music playing]
I don't know yet. It's all very new.
I'm scared of flying.
-I'm preparing myself 'cause I'm scared.
-I'm scared too.
I still haven't gone because of that.
I'm scared.
-It's gonna be fine.
-And he's waiting for us to go.
We're going.
He's waiting.
[pensive music continues]
[indistinct chatter, laughter]
[whistling, whooping]
[alert chimes]
Made it.
How are you, Mrs. Nilza?
It's your first time in Spain, isn't it?
[Felipe] See how beautiful Madrid is?
Now she'll come all the time.
No more excuses.
She'll have to come every month.
[Vini] Seeing my whole family there was
something I've always dreamed of.
Being able to see my grandmother
after so much time without seeing her
and having her watch the final.
And my aunt,
who really doesn't like flying at all,
but they made the effort for me.
-[all laughing]
-It's a shame I'm not at home.
Or I'd take all of them with me.
[chuckles]
It took me a while, but I came.
-How are you?
-I found the courage to come for him.
-You made it here.
-Yeah, she's staying.
No, I'm not. I'm going back.
-You're gonna stay, Mrs. Nilza.
-I have to take care of him.
[Luana] Look at that.
Oh wow! Look at this, Nilza!
[ladies laugh]
[Luana] See that?
[Nilza] Oh, my sweet boy!
You going to the final? Are you?
-Are you?
-Yeah!
-See, he's excited.
-[Menegate] We're watching the final, man!
What day is it? I don't remember.
[Tat over speakers] There's still
25 minutes left before we land.
I want to thank all of you for being here.
First of all, I want to thank Papa
for making all of this happen today.
Also, Vini
[Vini] It's a father-son relationship
as well.
My dad is often away, and Tat was
the person who always looked after me.
Both, they're like
my two dads away from home.
Everyone, enjoy every bit of this,
because we don't know
when it'll happen again.
Getting here isn't easy.
So let's cheer like crazy
and Hala Madrid!
Let's go, guys!
[group cheering]
LONDON
ENGLAND
[crowd chattering]
[pensive music playing]
JUNE 1ST, 2024
REAL MADRID X BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Vinicius Junior
La la la la la la
[crowd cheering]
[announcer] It's about to start.
This is the game that matters.
This decides everything!
Now, there's 90 minutes to go
until someone gets to shout,
"We are the champions!"
It's in play!
The Champions League final is underway!
[Vini] I always think about
how many more finals I'll play.
And this could be the last one.
So you better enjoy every second,
all the anticipation,
the whole allure of the Champion's League.
'Cause it's not easy to get to the final.
Not everybody can win.
And I've already won once.
But I want to win many more.
[announcer] He's lost the ball.
Camavinga's complaining about it.
He's right in front of the goal!
Fllkrug's shot smashes off the post.
[Vini] I had to keep tracking back
because we were facing a great team
who was giving it
everything they had to try to win.
[announcer] He passes the ball,
good thinking by Sabitzer,
sets up a shot and oh!
Courtois!
Ball to Vinicius.
A cross towards Rodrygo.
He jumps on it but goes over.
Carvajal!
[Ancelotti] I don't know how far he'll go.
But the reality is, at the moment,
he's the most decisive player in soccer.
[Vini] I was never a fan
of the number seven
until I got here and saw
what it actually represents.
What Cristiano did here, what Ral did.
[announcer] He's lost it.
Another corner for Madrid.
Which Toni Kroos is about to take.
Into the box, a header from Carvajal.
-Goal!
-[crowd roaring]
What a smooth pass!
Vinicius has an opportunity.
He controls it. He make space!
And shoots!
[crowd cheering]
[dramatic music playing]
Vinicius Junior!
Vini! Junior!
Goal for Real Madrid!
[cheering, whooping]
He received the ball from Bellingham,
and now Real Madrid lead two-nil.
Yes, you said it.
He matched Messi, right?
[announcer 2] He's surpassed Messi.
He's the youngest player to score
in two Champions League finals.
[cheering continues]
[dramatic music continues]
Champions, ol, ol, ol, ol
We're champions again!
I'll see you in Cibeles!
It's been a season
that I'll never forget in my life.
It's a crowning moment not just for me,
but my entire family.
And my friends and everybody
who rooted for me. [sniffles]
Is he here?
He's here. Awesome!
Hello!
[group cheering, applauding]
Champions, ol, ol, ol
["Gratido" playing]
[men continue singing in background]
[lyrics in Portuguese]
[crowd cheering]
I am very happy
with the best player in the world.
[laughing]
[announcer] Here comes Vini!
He's flying, Vini Junior!
He's got past Emre Can!
Vini Junior! He's coming back!
Here comes Malvadeza!
Vini Junior. The best in the world!
Whoa!
I was just a kid who liked
playing soccer barefoot
in the streets of So Gonalo.
Getting here means a great deal to me.
-["Gratido" continues playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[shouting indistinctly]
It's a pleasure for me to play with
all of these players, to play for
[crowd, in Spanish]
Golden Ball! Vinicius, Golden Ball!
[Tat] To hear
the most demanding fan base in the world
chanting that you're
the world's best player
That right there, says it all.
-["Gratido" playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[announcer] What a cross.
What a ball from Vini.
Go! Vini does it again!
[Vini] I improve with every game,
and in each game I do things better.
The next step is winning the World Cup.
[announcer] Goal!
[Vini] I want to put my country on top,
make all Brazilians proud,
and be the happiest man on earth.
'Cause when you win a World Cup,
it's not just you who's happy,
it's the entire country as well.
-["Gratido" continues playing]
-[lyrics in Portuguese]
[announcer] It's with Kylian Mbapp,
through ball to Vini Junior,
in front of goal!
Goal!
Lunin moves it forward quickly,
passes it on to Vini Junior!
He's flying!
The goalkeeper hasn't come out!
Vini's gonna be face-to-face with him.
Go Vini!
[crowd roaring]
I'LL DO IT 10X IF I HAVE TO.
THEY AREN'T READY.
-["Set Vini JR." playing]
