White Star (1983) Movie Script
1
Good morning, Dreamers.
This is Harry Halibut on Radio 66.
Heavy radio in the city of Berlin.
In local news this morning,
four youths were found
deader than carp in a local lake.
Apparently of heroin overdoses.
And what do I tell you about fishing and
taking drugs, huh?
In other news,
squatters took over a
couple new buildings
in the northern
part of the city.
And I wish they'd
take over my place.
It's pretty messy. Maybe
they could do something with it.
In music news, Moody, the former
keyboard player from the Purple Rats,
has gone solo.
And has teamed up with
a guy named Kenneth Barlow,
an American producer
who had something to do with
the Rolling Stones back in the 60s.
Anyway, Barlow was born in Heidelberg.
Some say he was the son
of an American spy there.
He worked as a photographer
in Vietnam during the war.
He's been around.
More recently, he was
an ordained minister
in the Sun City Unification
Church in Palo Alto, California.
Now he's discovered Moody.
They're going into one of
Berlin's finest studios this morning
to begin work on an album
tentatively to be titled White Star.
There seems to be a lot
of money involved in that.
And tonight, as a special treat at the
Gomorrah Club, you can see Moody,
in concert, for the first time,
doing his own new music from White Star.
That's Moody Tonight at 9 o'clock at the
Gomorrah Club.
- Hey.
- What did you do, buddy?
- Hey, she's cool, man. Good.
- Hey.
Your gettin' hot out
there, you hear that, kid?
I'm not dead, huh?
Look at that.
He's a big star now.
You look terrific.
- You think so?
- Yeah, you look great.
Your suit. You know
it's dirty back there.
- Oh yeah.
- Yeah.
That's the reason for that, you see.
They never turn you
back to the audience.
Never turn you back to the audience,
my advice.
You know that Alan Ladd wore this in
Shane, but they cut the scene out?
You know that Errol Flynn wore this in
Captain Blood?
Do you know what a
star you're gonna be?
You go out there and play it like
you know it or I'm gonna kill you.
You get that damn kid out there.
Those punks are tearing my place apart!
No, wait, I'm not sending
my sister's kid out there.
The hell you're not!
They're paying to see him, that's why
they're tearing the place apart!
They're gonna see him!
They're gonna see him!
- Get him out there!
- It's your job!
It's your responsibility
to quiet him down!
I said get out of here!
Quiet him down!
Don't let that bother you.
Don't let that fool you.
- You see this?
- Yeah.
Okay, five minutes.
Five minutes, right?
Five minutes, they're
gonna be good and hot.
You know what you're gonna do?
You're gonna go out there and your
music's just gonna cool them right out.
You just believe me.
Don't do that to your hair,
let me do that to my hair.
Don't do that to your hair.
Do it, baby.
Do it, man.
I'll kill you.
What's he doing? He's crazy!
Hello, hello, hello.
Officer, listen.
There's a riot down here.
It's the Gomorrah Club riot.
Officer, yes.
I'm reporting a riot.
And, like, you know, I want you...
Well, one sec...
Yeah, this riot started in the streets.
Yeah, like, get down here.
There's a riot going on.
My star's being killed.
Get down here.
Get those people down here.
You hear me, officer?
I gotta hang up.
Can you hear this?
Listen to this!
Did you hear that?
Now, get down here!
That's YOUR future.
This is White Star talking to you.
White Star, mister.
Who bought it tonight?
You made me a great star night.
White Star. Moody MUdinsky!
How do you like that?
Who bought it tonight?
White Star!
Moody Mudinsky!
What is this shit?
The second coming?
You fucking hump.
Hey. Why you let
him waste my life?
I told you this wasn't the right place to flock
Paul my film. I'm loving it.
Buck you.
Just stay out there as long as you can.
Take as much as you can.
Come on.
Just stay out there.
You're crazy, man.
Hey, listen to me.
You don't even know how crazy.
Crazy, man.
What's wrong with you?
Just stay hanging there, Moody!
Hey, get away from there, man.
Get away from there.
The mother fucker pulled the fight.
Hey. Hey. The mother fucker
called the fight.
Change the cassette.
I'm gonna tell you something.
You know, this is White Star.
This is the future.
What do you know about music?
You thugs.
Come on!
How do you like that?
What do you know about music?
This is White Star.
This is the future.
You thugs.
Come on!
That's it!
Get him out of here!
Get him out of here!
Let's go! Come on!
Let's go!
That was a short concert.
Come on. Don't worry.
I'm sure Stravinsky was booed to start
with.
I can understand that.
Yes, I'm quite sure about Rachmaninoff.
Yes, I even think Beethoven.
If you carry on like this, you're
bound to have a great future.
Frank! Frank!
Wait a second here.
Give me the keys, Frank.
I don't like the fucking beds in this
precinct.
Hey, keep it back to the wall.
Listen to me.
Did anybody see you?
No, and they're not gonna.
You ain't finished, mister.
We just started.
Don't panic on me.
Let's move it out.
The publicity's out front.
You see what I mean?
Out front there.
That door's locked.
The door's locked.
You gotta go out the entrance.
You gotta go out the front.
The door's locked.
Come on.
Keep it going.
Just move it now.
Move it.
You have the evidence, Josh.
Move it.
It's all in the graveyard.
Remember what Winston Churchill said.
It's gonna be locked.
It's gonna be hot.
And there's gonna be something down.
Take a rest.
- It's gonna be...
- Get us out of here.
Come on.
Open this door.
My son's dying in here.
Get me out of here.
Get me out.
Get out, out, out.
- Get in the car. Get in the car.
- Okay.
Knight in shining armor.
It's a knight thing.
Stop it.
Where do you think you're going?
Get in. Get in.
Get everyone in there.
All right.
Get him over, man.
Where's your next gig?
Because we want to be there!
We want to be in the city, man!
Thanks for making me a star, gentlemen!
9.42 in the city.
54 degrees or 12 Celsius
downtown right now.
I'm Harry Halibut
on heavy radio.
Radio 66 in the city.
Big news last night.
There was a riot at the Gomorrah Club.
During the first appearance of Moody.
150 Berlin policemen and one
punker are in the hospital this morning.
Believe it or not, in a riot
that wiped out five city blocks.
There's some kind
of protest movement
by some citizen group this morning
to close down the Gomorrah
Club for good this time.
They can't do that, can they?
And I received an anonymous letter this
morning that's really negative,
predicting no future for Moody.
I can't understand why anybody
would write a letter like this.
From what I've heard about Moody,
he seems like a nice guy, I like him.
And apparently,
Eurosound does too.
Because we have unconfirmed
rumors this morning
that Eurosound is interested in a
possible recording contract with Moody.
Eurosound, it's your sound.
When you're in the
mood for music,
Eurosound Records has
the music for your mood.
Music to dance to, music to dream by,
music that rocks you.
It's fun, it's seductive,
it's explosive.
It's all on Eurosound records and tapes.
Eurosound.
It's your sound.
Listen, Moody's been launched
like a space satellite, you know.
I hope you don't miss the first flight.
Four city blocks demolished for what?
For the sound of the future.
Yeah, it's yours for a hundred.
Can I have a line, please?
We agreed on 75.
You ain't betting on a filly anymore,
mister.
Just let me take care of this first.
Look, the day after tomorrow there's a
promotion party up at the Pender.
Okay? Hang on,
honey, hang on, honey.
We'll close the deal then, okay?
Here's the down payment.
Still no deal.
My business is none of your business.
How is business?
Just go with the plan.
You all right?
It sounds strange.
Hey.
There's a telephone call for you.
Oh.
- Um, who is it?
- It's George.
I think I better talk to him upstairs.
Yeah.
Hey, man.
I got the Moody blues.
Uh, George.
Do you have the contract?
Moody, we should have taken that Banana
Records offer.
Only $15,000, maybe.
But here,
in Uncle Tom's cabin, we
could have made it for that.
Well, so we'll do the next one there.
Moody, Barlow sold me down the river.
You're his White Star.
Well, I could be wrong.
Hey, man.
You'll make it anyway.
Go ahead.
That's him.
That's him.
Hi.
I came by to pick up my belt.
Oh, what a surprise.
Um, I made it into a key chain.
Boy, that looks like blood on the tracks
to me.
Actually, it's a butterfly.
A butterfly.
Well, I think you better keep this
butterfly.
So how you doing?
Oh, great, great, you know.
Everybody wants a story
about my White Star album.
You know, we're
playing it cool till we get
all the marketing
campaign stuff worked out.
It's a big deal, huh?
Big deal.
Yeah, well, we think so.
Hmm.
Barlow's really good.
You know, my manager.
He's great.
But he's upstairs right now.
We got this big contract with EuroSound,
you know.
The money talks.
Money talks.
Nobody walks.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow, you better believe it.
Money or you're out.
Money talks.
Nobody walks.
Well, believe it or not, you call Mr.
Schlesinger.
His number is 774-9324.
We're having a meeting tomorrow,
and we're gonna close the deal.
Write it down, okay?
Right.
Could you please sign these blank
letterheads?
I'll type up the letters later.
Hey, this is Marcia.
She's a singer.
- This is Mr. Barlow, my manager.
- Hi.
You know, maybe he can
help you out. Or something.
He used to manage the Stones.
Yeah.
Now, don't exaggerate, now.
I was only their tour manager.
- Well, maybe you remember me.
- Yeah?
I was the in-house nurse at the Gamora.
Oh, yeah.
I remember you.
What happened to the tall guy,
huh?
Look at this, huh?
Well, we don't talk about that anymore,
do we?
No, I don't think it's very funny.
I know who started the trouble.
- Oh, you do?
- Yeah.
He's a Turkish Arab.
He's got black curly hair.
And I saw him on the streets
and you were talking with him.
- I was talking with him?
- Yes.
And that fucking mess with those punks?
I sure as hell don't remember anything
and I'm really surprised that you do.
So, Mr. Conners has taken over Mr.
Schlesinger's job.
Things sure move fast around your shop.
Thank you very much.
Your Mr. Schlesinger's
just got his walking papers.
And you're getting yours.
Money talks, nobody walks.
He got what?
That happens sometimes.
What's his successor's name?
Connors.
Connors.
Mr. Connors.
Mr. Connors is in a conference.
It's Barlow, right?
You know, it's about
Moody and, uh...
You know, we almost had a
contract as good as signed, so, uh...
Ah, yes, Moody.
Yes, Mr. Barlow, we remember.
I'm sure Mr. Connors
will be interested in a tape.
Uh, Mr. Schlesinger has the tapes.
Oh, I fear things have changed.
Mr. Connors is concentrating on a
promising marketing strategy.
Well, good for him.
I told Schlesinger that for years.
All right.
Now, uh, would you put Connors on the
phone?
Because I need to talk to him.
Mr. Barlow, I'm sure
Mr. Connors will get back to you.
When he has time.
Well, thank you very much.
I appreciate that.
Did you remember me?
Okay, thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
That's good.
One week, 12,000.
How am I gonna get my money?
Oh, you're gonna get it.
Fine.
If not, you're out tomorrow.
Yeah.
Excuse me, Marshal.
That's the end.
No, that's the beginning.
Because Connors is my man, Jack.
He's kicking us out.
Let me tell you.
In that fucking eight-track shack,
you got $30,000 worth of equipment.
Yeah.
That belongs to you.
Yeah, right.
And we scraped for it a long time,
you know?
Well, so?
Well, so without it, I mean, what,
George can go live in the fucking park.
Well, you wanna get buried with that
nigger in the fucking park?
Go ahead, man.
I can't do that.
I'd have to be a fucking bastard.
Don't you, stupid fucking bastard.
What are you staring at?
I can't imagine.
It's this big of a production.
Thank you.
Oh, I'd love to.
Hey, I'm sorry.
Hey, never say you're sorry.
You know something, man?
You got weird taste.
You want girls that can get
you hundreds of them with...
Tits at least. Yeah, tits.
- Good.
- Yeah, that's right.
You know why?
Because I'm there.
Because I made it.
No, huh.
You make it when I make it.
Yeah. You call me
when you've made it.
You'll make it.
Okay.
To sum it up, you have a young man who's
found his way into the headlines.
The public is on his side.
He's done nothing wrong.
He just wants to play a little music.
But it's not at all certain.
Baby boy can come across with the goods.
So what you've got is just a name.
No, no, no, no.
I've got more than just a name here,
mister.
Connors.
Look at this.
This is an image.
It's a face.
This is more than just a name.
Okay.
You have a name.
Not big yet.
But a clear image.
- That's right.
- Away from punk.
- That's right.
- Clean-cut guy.
Yeah.
Assassination attempt.
- Yeah, well, you know...
- Just a minute.
Facts like that we can
produce on an assembly line.
Mama's boy threatened in his recording
studio.
Police escort to the hospital.
Innocent girls.
Sentimental stuff, huh?
You know?
All that's no trouble
for my organization.
It's for the masses.
Yellow press.
So what you've got is a trading value.
But you don't have a product.
But I do have a product.
White Star, Mr. Barlow, is an accident.
Not a product.
Here, this is a product.
And they're already waiting to buy it.
Record of the month club.
More sales than you'll ever dream of.
Okay, I'll make you a solid offer.
I'll buy Moody and Future both.
But for my music.
One, two, three.
50,000.
Payment due when the records press.
Now look, that you've got to accept.
I don't have to accept anything.
Must cost a fortune just to keep that
thing clean, huh?
You bet.
That's beautiful.
Oh, boy.
Now, I want White Star, Mr. Conner.
Keep a couple.
He's a nice kid.
Take it easy, Mr. Stringman.
Hey.
Hey. That's expensive
easy with it, all right?
Expensive, huh?
You decided to sell it, right?
Yeah, I decided.
It's my stuff.
Yeah. Well, expensive
is expendable, mister.
And a lot of people die early.
You understand what I mean?
Go for the other gig, huh?
Go for this one.
Look, go slow with this one.
- Be cool.
- Be cool?
Cool's for school, mister.
Just help me move this stuff out.
Out!
Prick.
Just get your hands on it
and help me lift it out of here.
We're on the run.
Take this other one.
Be easy with this.
Just be cool with it.
Watch it, watch it, watch it.
It's a little expensive.
You know what I mean?
All right.
Hey, Moody.
Go on. Get in.
You used to have a telephone.
Would you call?
You could take me out dancing.
We'd have a ball.
All alone.
Hey, what are we producing here?
Bubblegum?
I thought we were producing White Star.
That's it, huh?
Let's mix right away.
Look,
as of today, we're spending my money.
As of today, I'm the producer.
Yeah, I see.
I see.
Here.
Yeah, it takes me off the hook.
Here.
Here's your money.
Now you go up and pay him.
And as producer, I'm sure you'll know
exactly what to do next.
Hey, there's only 12,000
here, man. We said 30.
Hey, you paid 30.
I got 15.
We paid 50.
Anyway, you got 13.
This is only 12.
Where's the other 1,000?
You think I'm cheating you?
Huh?
I still want to know where's the other
1,000.
I mean 2,000.
3,000.
And it's here.
Right here, man.
Yeah.
Want to know an asshole?
Here's an asshole.
Right here, man.
There it is.
Yeah, it's the
future. Right. Yeah.
I had 2,000 of these made.
I had 2,000 of them.
You want some more?
Huh? Want some? Pin them.
Pin them. Put them on your friends, man.
Because there's no future.
Yeah.
2,000 of them distributed in every shop,
every school, every disco.
Pepe's having a blowout tonight.
Punk's gonna be there.
You remember the Gamora?
Don't you know how many they are,
don't you?
Okay, wow, huh?
How about 2,000 people screaming future?
No future. Future. No
future. Future. No future.
Man, are you nuts?
- What about my future?
- Don't you understand?
What about George's future?
What about your future, huh?
You want to know something?
Name that baby.
Name that future
because it has a ring to it.
You understand what I mean?
That's marketing.
Marketing.
I want to tell you something.
That's more important than music.
Because I'm promoting you.
Man, this isn't even enough to pay our
debts here.
God damn it, I could have told you that.
That's why I'm your producer.
You want to pay everything
in fucking cash?
Go ahead, man.
But I'll tell you something.
Credit's where it's at.
Credit.
I'll get some.
That's right.
The future knows your future.
Is this the studio?
Let me talk to Barlow.
Hello?
Hey, listen, man.
I got a great idea.
I got 20 points.
I got nothing to do with it.
I'm gonna turn them loose on the studio,
okay?
What are you fucking talking about, man?
It's a fantastic idea,
for Christ's sake.
Just think about it.
A Moody month in the Paragon?
I mean, Jesus Christ, you ain't...
While I was making White Star,
well, you may even...
God damn name in the paper.
I can't stop him, man.
I can't stop him.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
They fucking thwarted
off the goddamn Gamora.
For Christ's sake, and
they're playing Moody's court.
And these fuckers
got nothing to do with it.
They're getting real angry.
And I'm gonna tell you right now, you
better not fucking call the doctor, boy!
Where are we going?
Listen, man.
This is screwed.
This is really screwed.
We gotta give him a
warning or something.
Let that shit get in the car.
It's murder not to warn him, at least.
Shut the fuck up, will ya?
We can at least call the police.
Oh, yeah, invite the police
and the punks to the same party.
That's real cute.
Why don't we call the police?
What do we call the police?
You guys are a couple of scaredycats.
Okay, fine, well, it's your gig.
Damn right, it's my gig.
Come on, Marshal,
let's get out of here.
Come on, Marshal, let's get out of here.
Yeah, get the fuck out of here.
Shit, man, the punks, they're gonna
fucking get him.
They're gonna kill him, man.
How the hell did Vidal know they were
gonna show up here?
He used to manage a punk band,
you know, he sort of knows us.
You know what? You bought it, sucker.
The music is this?
What kind of fucking business is this?
You motherfuckers.
You fucking idiots.
Goddamn, get out of here.
Get out of here.
You fucking motherfuckers.
You fucking assholes.
Okay, all right.
Oh, shit.
Goddamn son of a bitches.
Goddamn bitches, you fuckers.
Hey. Let's burn this son of a batch.
Hey.
This is the guy from the Camorra.
Come here.
You gotta see him.
Come here.
Let's burn the fucker, all right?
Let's burn it.
Hey, man.
He doesn't take your music seriously.
He takes me seriously.
He'd burn your songs if he could.
He's primitive.
Look.
He may be the first person
ever to take me seriously.
Hey. I need to call...
I'm from the newspaper, that
punk's out here. That punk.
Now, you must let me in, lady.
Let me in.
Keep quiet.
Good luck to you.
Bet you're glad to see me.
Frank.
I think you forgot
to game plan a little bit.
You know what I mean?
And I'm not gonna
understand the game plan.
Until I get my money.
I need some money.
Hey, uh, why don't
you do something useful,
like, you know, uh,
get the fuck out of the apartment.
Here they come.
Make it look good!
Stop! Stop! Get away!
Get!
My fucking leg.
Fucker.
Cool it!
Come on, now!
For Christ's sake, lighten up!
Come on, what's happening?
Lighten up here!
- Hey, man!
- Guys, come on!
Jesus.
Hey. Let's do it.
Hey. Fuck that.
Get that--
Get down!
Oh, God.
- Hey, pinch me.
- Yeah!
How are you?
How are you?
Oh, so good.
Oh shit.
Yeah, that's better.
Taxi!
Hey! Taxi!
Eating already, eh?
I can't fucking wait
to see what happens next.
What happens next, you wanna see it?
That happens next.
The cream puff.
That's what I want, right there.
You know, after that?
Patience.
Patience happens after that.
You hear me?
I like frankfurter.
I like mustard.
I like a lot of ketchup on it.
Yeah.
Because, you see, TV takes time.
Believe me. Patience.
It takes time.
It's not like a newspaper.
It's not like Snap, you know.
And there's the article,
and Zippo Zappo, huh?
TV takes time.
Here, here. Beer.
I'd like a beer.
Future. You see, the future.
The future.
Future!
Future, man!
That's where it's at.
The future!
That's where it's at.
You see?
That's what they wanna hear.
That's what the TV wants.
That's what's selling
the idea to the TV.
The future!
The future is always the future.
- There you go.
- Yeah.
And you just, uh, you just, uh,
believe me.
Once we hit TV, just one minute.
Once we hit TV, it's Biffo Box Office,
mister.
It's socket to him right there,
George.
That's your bullshit, you know?
- My bullshit?
- I just wanna know about my music.
I wanna know how
I'm getting back in the studio.
- Your music you wanna know about?
- Yes.
How you gonna get back in the studio?
Do you mind if I smoke a cigarette and
drink a beer and eat some food?
And would you pay the man?
Yeah, E to the B, huh?
- How much is that?
- 6.43.
You know, he's really pissed off.
Big fucking deal, you know what I mean?
I mean, you got out, didn't you?
And they didn't get in, right?
Right, right, right.
Look, we didn't even warn him,
you know?
That was your brilliant idea, remember?
Yeah, nobody got into his studio.
Nobody fucked with his studio.
They fucked with me, man!
They fucked with me, you understand?
Now, what you... I mean, you
probably even lost my clothes by now.
They're right there, right here.
I got them.
I know they're right there.
I can smell them.
Jesus Christ.
I lost my fucking appetite.
Hey, come on.
Finish eating.
Let me have a bottle of red wine.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Thank you.
You're a fucking jerk.
Jerk, man.
Yeah, money talks.
Money walks.
What a bunch of fucking crap, man.
What a bunch of fucking crap.
Pardon me, man.
Hey, come on.
Excuse me.
What is money?
Money's paper.
That's what paper is.
It's money.
That bastard beat the fuck out of me.
I'm surprised, man,
how much paper I got.
That's great, you know.
So turn it into money, huh?
That's right, hot dog.
- Hey, hey.
- You asshole.
Come on, I didn't tip her.
What's this money you're talking about?
Wow. Wow, this is too hot
for me, you know what I mean?
You assholes.
You know something?
It ain't the goddamn fucking washer,
mister.
You know that it's too hot?
It's the money.
Fuck.
Yeah, but so what's this money,
anyway?
Well, you know what
George Raft would say.
This is my last quarter.
That's right.
All right.
We got credit, mister.
Hey.
Didn't that bastard say that
he would pick up the tab for a week?
Huh?
Look, here.
It's not much.
It's just $1,500.
Cleaned out my account.
It's just from some papers
my grandma left me, you know?
- Your grandma left you that, huh?
- Yeah.
Go ahead, take it.
Uh, she might have, uh,
wanted it for your education, kid.
Yeah, I know.
And, uh, you respect the old
lady's wishes too much, right?
Consider it tuition.
If you insist.
Now.
But I used to, uh...
I used to give tips bigger than this.
Yeah, that's probably
why you went broke.
Broke my ass.
Broke my ass.
You know, there's only
one type that goes broke.
And they take chances
and they take risks.
Now, have you ever, uh...
Have you ever heard of a mailman going
broke or an ice cream man going broke?
I had an uncle once who sold ladies'
lingerie.
Bullshit!
What'd he do, sell door-to-door?
Huh, man?
You're talking about,
like, being hard up.
Well, I was never fucking hard up.
Broke! Huh? Oh, boy.
Yeah.
I mean, really going broke.
That's where millions change hands.
You know something?
At that time, uh...
we had millions...
in our hands.
Look at this, man.
Golden toilet seats.
The Royal Garden.
The Glass Cove.
I haven't changed, man.
The times have changed.
The fucking times have changed.
There were real stars.
There were real stars?
Let me tell you.
They weren't like plastic papas,
you know?
With spastic sounds.
They were real stars.
Real stars.
Real stars.
We eat this food.
Real stars.
We were punks, man.
Shit.
Groupies, you know, used to come up at
night.
No big thing, you know.
Lay around naked.
No names.
What do we know?
Dining in bed.
Silver trays.
Then wearing garter belts
as targets, which we supplied.
I mean, which was not
a cheap thing to do at that time.
However, we did...
So, anyway, hey, man, listen, man.
Dig.
Keith.
Keith gets up one morning,
but he doesn't know morning.
Day, night, night, day, he doesn't know,
you know.
He wants to know whether it's day or
night, you know.
I mean, what the hell?
So he opens the window.
And this very valuable Chinese vase...
falls out six storeys down with...
a bouquet of flowers in it.
One minute later, there is the manager
there, in a tuxedo.
And he says that
here's a brand-new vase.
And the girls downstairs, they picked up
all the flowers...
and rearranged them in the vase for him.
And Keith says...
and there's the naked women laying all
around.
Yeah.
And, well, um, yes, well, I mentioned
that, and I have to excuse myself.
Yeah, right.
That was rock and roll.
We changed a lot of shit, man.
And, you know...
Yeah.
We were, uh...
in Nero.
You know, when you're feeling your way
through it.
How about Caligula, huh?
You like that?
Richard the, uh...
Oh, man.
Or Henry the Eighth.
Off with their fucking heads.
But there was rock music.
Hey.
You know, later...
I mean, if we make it, um, you know,
uh, stuff with the groupies, uh,
does it still happen?
You like that part.
Very neat, huh?
You like that?
That's cute.
Yeah, I think they can be arranged.
Because I know this man that, uh,
he owns a tit show.
Yeah, not that kind.
I mean, you know, I
mean, I'm a groupies.
You know, groupies.
Hey, these girls ain't bad, you know.
And they're great women, you know.
And, uh, they got a little experience.
Yeah.
They're, uh, you know.
Shit.
You know something, Moody?
With your face...
I could take you to the top.
I'll tell you something.
You know why I want to do it?
Because I want to show
them that I can do it again.
That's why.
I want to tell you something.
You're gonna have to
come up with your stuff, kid.
You understand what I'm saying to you?
Because, like, I'm gonna go to a half...
Oh, boy, man, am I going in deep,
you know?
I'm going in so deep.
I'm gonna get it here.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- You know, don't give me this shit.
You know, kamikaze heroics, you know.
What an asshole you are.
Listen, let me tell you something.
Just think about the future, all right?
The future.
The future.
We are the future.
Moody...
Me and you are the fucking future.
We got the rest.
Yeah, uh, play a thrill case.
Hey, man.
Dad, dad.
You know, you're a punk sometimes,
you know that?
God damn it.
Sounds like music, you know.
I was coming down the hallway,
you know.
I heard it, and then I went inside and
listened to it.
Yep.
Equals my money in a couple years, bro.
Hey, what's the tune?
You didn't even hear me.
I'm gonna go and get some music,
you know.
Yeah, that's why I'm a musician,
you know.
Mom's forgot a bag out here.
Uh, I'll drop it by her place.
Hey, you know something?
What am I, just not the credit card
to you?
Just not the guy who pumps
your organ, man? Huh?
I just never know whether to take you
seriously, you know?
Seriously?
Yeah.
Are you serious, man?
If I may say so, man.
I am the most scrupulous and most
honorable.
And if I may say so, the most valuable
dude in the whole motherfucking,
like, you know, music business.
And I'm gonna tell you something,
Jack.
Hey, man.
Do you question my sincerity, man?
And you don't trust me?
Well.
You've done me
a little blow, man.
Hey, uh, Bert here tells me you gave the
studio a big, fat advance.
Where'd you get money like that from,
huh?
Well...
Hey.
I got it.
Don't question it.
Hey.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
There's something else here.
There's something else here.
You know, it's right down in my office
here.
Look at this. Look
at this. Here we are.
- Yeah, right.
- Read that.
- Huh?
- Right there.
A sound that enters an area as yet
unexplored.
It almost had to be called future.
What? This guy really said that?
- Peter Fuller?
- Hey, did you read it?
Did he really say it?
Y-eah.
Yeah, he's a friend of mine.
It cost me a very expensive
dinner at the Hilton.
That's what he did, baby.
But I'll tell you something.
There's something else.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I hired two managers.
And they're eight groups.
Um, they're all calling their sound
future.
And there will be more to follow.
Wait, wait. What kind of
groups are you talking about?
Oh, fuck them, man.
They're groups that need a gig.
That's what kind of fucking groups they
are.
You're the star, my man.
You're my man. Now, listen.
Let's go.
Future!
Ha, ha, ha, ha. Yeah.
In the beginning, there was a word.
Let me show you the beginning.
In the beginning.
In the beginning.
Took him.
Oh, shit.
I just keep working so hard.
You know what I mean?
Come on, I got something I want to show
you.
Oh, my leg.
My leg.
What's the matter with your leg?
Oh, not too much.
I'm just not used to walking.
I'm gonna buy a new Mercedes Benz
tomorrow.
You know, uh...
I've thought a lot about, like,
musicians just having ears, you know?
And not having eyes, you know?
Besides Ray Charles and Stevie
Wonder and people like that.
Yeah.
Because, uh...
Have you ever had an eye test?
Yeah, well... Well, I mean, how
about looking right over there?
See that?
Does that... See this?
See all this that you just walked by?
- Huh? See all that?
- Yeah. Yeah.
See that?
See that down there?
Look at all that.
You know what that says?
That says, Moody, White Star, Future.
Can you read that?
Can you read it?
Maybe you're nearsighted, huh?
Why don't you look right there?
Right over there.
See?
Nearsighted.
That's what I say.
Hey.
Mercedes-Benz for me tomorrow.
Not bad, huh?
Not bad.
A tour? What the hell?
Yeah.
Yeah.
An opening concert and a tour.
Yeah, but in two weeks?
I mean, I don't even need to
be out of the studio in two weeks.
I got a press conference
scheduled for you tomorrow.
So they'll know what
you really look like.
You know what I mean?
A tour? A concert?
I gotta have musicians, you know?
I gotta have a show, you know?
I gotta rehearse.
That takes longer than two weeks.
What's the matter with you?
You think this is really gonna happen,
kid?
I mean, what, do you believe everything
you read?
So what? It's not gonna happen?
Why does it say it there,
then, huh? I mean, you read it.
You got these things plastered all over
the place.
It's supposed to cost you a bundle.
Where'd you get money like this,
anyway?
They're on every corner.
There's plenty more
where that came from.
Listen, your music's gonna be on the
radio.
It's gonna be on AM.
It's gonna be floating like waves across
this country.
And I'll tell you another thing,
too.
Newspapers are gonna
be interviewing you.
Yeah, there you are.
There you are.
Let me tell you
another thing, kid.
And you take this from a pro.
A canceled tour is
better than doing one.
So how's it gonna work?
How's it gonna work?
How the hell did this work?
I'm gonna make it work.
I'm gonna make it work.
Adios.
Oh, look, this is the guy.
This is the movie I was
reading about last week.
I read about it in a magazine,
and I'd really like to go, you know?
Yeah, I heard it was a riot.
Yeah, well, I'd still like to go.
I think it's cute.
Come on.
Hey, have a good night.
It's the future.
It's White Star, man.
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.
Got it.
Here's to the thousands.
Check it.
Did you see the posters, man?
They're all smeared with paint and shit.
Smeared with paint?
Do you know we're late for a press
conference?
Why are you always
getting invites for it anyway?
I was just standing
there in front of this car.
- Where'd you get this car?
- Publicity. It's all free.
Let me drive it.
Let me get in.
- We're late.
- Oh, fuck.
You know how late we are, man.
Put that white suit on.
Oh, man, I am zoned.
Zoned. Take these. Take
these. Take these. Take these.
Hey, keep driving the road.
Put on that goddamn
white suit, will ya?
Goddamn cab drivers.
I wish I could get them off the fucking
road.
We're going to strike.
- Dynamite, huh?
- Dynamite. Yeah.
It's a computerized star.
It has batteries and twinkles.
I only give them to journalists.
Here, here, here, here, here.
Goddamn it. Shit.
Put on that white suit, goddamn it.
- Get down.
- Come on.
Goddamn trucks, get
off the fucking road.
Put it on.
All right, now.
Watch your image.
Lend me your ears.
You died at least once.
What?
On drugs, you died.
You know I'm not into drugs.
Of course you're against drugs.
That's the whole point.
But not because you're some sort of
Midwestern whole grain granola.
You know what I mean.
A little pink-faced Pat Boone here.
But because you've been
through all that, you see.
You've been through it and you survived.
And you were a junkie when you were ten.
You understand?
And you OD'd.
And you were pronounced clinically dead.
And then you saw the light.
The White Star.
Oh, fuck!
Fuck!
Goddamn, what we need is a goddamn good
depression.
So these fuckers can't fucking afford
cars.
Okay, I'm ready, I'm ready.
Image has to fit, you know what I mean?
I can't sell an old saddlebag as a sex
bomb.
Why don't you sell me as a sex bomb?
Then I can keep my mouth shut.
That's exactly right, exactly,
exactly.
Shut up, shut up.
Gives you that mysterious touch,
you know what I mean?
And all that stuff comes out in the
press releases anyway, all that info.
And if you get in any trouble,
any trouble at all,
just remember I'm here to help you.
That's why I'm your promoter, huh?
But you better get on that
site, by that door over there,
because we're coming in and
here's the audience, brother.
Can you stay here?
Wait a minute, let me have your shades.
No, no, you look perfect like that.
I'll be right back, I'll get you in a
minute.
Okay, all you cameramen, I want you over
here.
All right, okay.
It's beautiful.
It is so beautiful, man.
Wait, let me turn the lights down.
You don't think it's too much,
maybe?
It isn't too much, nothing's too much.
Listen, I got this thing's rigged.
Okay, let's take some pictures here.
All right, let's go, okay?
Smile, smile, smile.
Hey, you know what I mean?
All right, you got it?
Okay, stop here.
Where is your video?
Video over there!
Come on, man.
Over there, that's it, that's it,
baby.
Okay, smile, all right.
Okay, cuties, come on in, darlin,
there they are.
Come on, groupies, come on, let's go,
come on in, come on in.
All right, all right, huh?
Autographs, huh?
Ah, who remembers things?
Who remembers things, huh?
Groupies, I promise you, groupies.
Okay, bring the toilets we need.
How to get them naked is most important.
I mean, that's what I say.
Okay, all right, keep signing,
keep signing, keep signing.
Okay.
They're shooting.
My baby!
All right, somebody stole my star!
You understand what I mean?
It's an assassination attempt.
Just relax.
Assassination attempt!
Assassination attempt!
It's an emergency!
I'll get an ambulance!
Oh, my baby!
She's all right.
She'll be all right. She'll
be all right. She'll be all right.
What are you staring at?
Somebody get an ambulance!
Get a doctor, for God's sake!
Get a doctor!
It's an assassination attempt!
She's all right.
She's all right.
Get a pillow for her.
Get in.
Get him a pillow.
Get the child a pillow.
A pillow.
A pillow.
Please, I need a pillow.
I'll get you a pillow.
I'll get you a pillow.
Wait a moment.
I'll get you a pillow.
Daniel, what's going on out there?
They shot at me.
I don't know.
No, no.
I don't know.
They tried to shoot at me.
Good morning.
I'm Harry Halibut on heavy radio
with some very heavy
news this morning.
There was an assassination attempt on
Moody outside his hotel yesterday.
It's on the front pages of most of the
Berlin papers.
And I've been on the phone all morning
trying to clear up rumors about this.
Moody was not injured.
He is okay.
However, a young girl was shot.
And she is in the hospital.
And we hope she'll get well soon.
Man, it's incredible what
happens to this Moody guy.
The other day, all his posters were
smeared with red paint.
And he was involved in some kind
of fight while trying to protect them.
I've been on the phone talking with all
kinds of interested people this morning.
Schoolgirls, school groups,
a couple of parents.
And a peace group that
wants Moody to participate
in some kind of peace movement
that they're planning.
Ever since Moody came onto
the scene a few short weeks ago,
he's brought something
new to the youth of the city.
This idea of future.
And a hope for a better future
for all of us.
And I just wish that my own future were
more certain at this point.
And everyone's been asking me, when
is the White Star LP going to come out?
Well, we don't know.
But in the mail this morning,
I got a tape from Moody.
It's a sneak preview
of the White Star LP.
And I want to play it now for Sandra,
who's in the hospital.
And if you can hear me now, Sandra,
I want you to know
that this is for you.
And everyone hopes
that you get well soon.
This is Moody, a sneak
preview from the White Star LP.
For you, Sandra,
and your future.
Sunglasses, I'm blind.
Farsighted, you know what I mean?
Alright, that's the deal.
Okay, we're in business now, mister.
You know what I mean?
I would.
If you only knew what I meant.
You are a maniac.
Mr. Connors, you are a maniac.
Alright, let's see our future party.
Future party, my ass.
This is future rock, Mr. Smith.
Future rock.
It's written in the contract.
Hey, Conor, I want to talk
to you for a minute. Sit down.
What's this about?
I got some art designs here, you know?
Advertising ideas, you know,
for posters, things like that.
Okay, good.
That hospital idea, Mr. Connors,
is a great idea.
Yeah, yeah.
A TV crew, full TV crew.
Wait a minute, you mean today?
Yeah, I mean today.
See, how long can I keep the kid in the
hospital, right?
I can't keep him there forever.
I mean, like, you know,
pulls at the heartstrings.
Don't it, Mr. Connors? Eh, baby?
Okay, yeah.
Oh, yeah, the cops, the cops.
Now, the cops is a great idea,
and I can arrange that.
How about that one?
I can arrange that.
Listen, Mr. Connors, excuse me.
Uh, look, we've got to press this record
right now.
Thanks for the tip, Mr. Barlow.
No, no, you're welcome, mister.
Now, this is marketing, right?
Marketing, all right?
You just think now.
You think of John Lennon being
assassinated, all right?
You think of that.
You think of a sing-in.
You think of a sing-in like, you know,
in Central Park, right?
And five hours later, those
records are out on the press.
Hot on the beach.
You got it?
Now, that's marketing, mister.
Okay? Hey, Carroll, I want
to talk to you for a minute.
- Hey, Carl.
- I'll be with you in just a minute.
No, I want to talk to you in a minute.
Listen, listen, listen.
There's something really
important to me, man.
What's that?
That's that you don't tell
Moody about the contract, okay?
- Oh, doesn't he know?
- No, no, no.
- No, he don't know.
- No, no, wait a second.
I'm his producer, and I have
the right to sign the contract.
But let me tell you something.
They're laying bubble gum on me.
You understand what I'm saying to you?
They're laying bubble gum on me.
And, like, you know,
And it's not his music.
And I don't know how he's going
to react to that, you understand?
And so, like, you know, listen,
mister.
I have to have this moment with my man.
I have to tell him, see?
Okay?
Thank you very much, sir.
Okay.
What the fuck is going down here, man?
Do you hear me, Bert?
I mean, what kind of drug is he on,
man?
You should know.
Would you get your shit together,
man?
Please, man.
Hey, listen, man.
The hospital, man.
Hey, look at me, man.
TV, the girl.
Do you understand
what I'm saying to you?
The mother, the girl.
Do you remember it all?
TV, the hospital right now.
I'm fine.
Barlow, there's a
telephone call for you.
I'm just fine.
Who's calling me?
It's your bank.
Mr. Barlow.
Actually, I need to speak with
the head of the studio, Mr. Gellner.
I'm glad to help you out.
It's about the guarantee he provided for
you.
Just a formality.
But he put a limited stamp on the form.
I'm sure it was just an oversight on his
part.
But for loans of this amount, we'd like
his personal guarantee.
Since I've already paid out the amount,
I really have trouble.
He'll have to come into the bank.
Hey, listen, listen.
I can pick it up myself.
No trouble at all.
Thank you.
Uh, Bert said somebody phoned from the
bank.
Yeah, it was the bank.
And they actually wanted to talk to me.
Okay.
Barlow, yeah, I want to talk
to Inspector Bloom, please.
Hello, Mr. Barlow.
Well, uh, Moody got
a threatening letter.
Yeah.
What's it about?
Okay.
Uh, the business with the girl was an
accident.
We'll get you yet, you dog, man.
That's what it says.
Who do you think sent it, Mr. Barlow?
It's like, it's like newspapers.
Like, you know, uh, cut out newspapers,
pasted together.
Inspector, now, like, I gave you a
composite picture of the guy.
Why haven't you done anything?
Why hasn't this man's picture been on
television, huh?
Look, Mr. Barlow. We have our methods.
You understand we just can't
override what's worked for us before.
Well, look, I'm driving Moody
over to the hospital right now.
You understand what I mean?
Yeah, and everywhere he goes, there's a
crowd.
I need police protection.
Yeah, that's right, mister.
Because we've got posters all over the
place.
All over town.
And we're planning a tour.
And if that tour's canceled,
if this man isn't caught, the
tour's gonna be canceled.
Now, what do we have to do here?
Huh?
Do we have to have a man killed here?
Look, that's your business.
The police have nothing
to do with a concert tour.
If you want to send out your
man to go on a tour-- we can--
I'm sorry. There's
nothing we can do about it.
You understand that
we just cannot offer...
Well, I can't help that.
You know what I mean?
I can't help it.
He's a star.
Shit. Get yourself together.
I'm all right. I'm all right then.
I just have to piss.
You just hold it.
Hold it.
How much further?
Just down the 147.
Moody! Moody!
Loved it.
Moody. How are you doing?
This place is great, man.
Why didn't you bring me here sooner?
Because I didn't know you really just
sexed.
- Funny.
- Smile with me.
You're really funny.
You ought to be a comedian, you know?
- Yeah.
- A comedian.
Hey, you ought to be in here.
You ought to be in here, you know,
then you could be a lie-down comedian.
- You get it?
- Yeah. A lie-down comedian.
That's what you just did, huh?
- Comedian.
- Funny.
Just any smile you give to the girl.
You understand?
My sisters, huh?
Or the missus.
I gotta piss this.
Hey, listen.
I'm gonna kick the shit out of you,
man.
If you don't get your act together,
I'm gonna turn you all around.
You understand what I mean?
You can't do that.
You gonna blow my show, huh?
Oh, look at that.
It's a real punk army.
Listen, I'm worried about you.
I'm worried about you.
Look.
I want you to smile.
You see the rooms right there?
You stay here.
You understand what I mean?
You keep your stuff together for these
pictures.
Hiya.
You new here?
What do you ask?
I haven't seen you around here before.
Oh, with an eye like that, I'm not
surprised.
You're cute. You're
really cute. It's the truth.
Don't worry about it.
Excuse me, huh?
Hey. What are you doing?
Hey. Give me that.
Barlow.
Get her to crack. Cut the crap.
Anybody want my vase?
Listen to me. Don't you
get it, man? The girl is dead, man.
The kid's dead.
Do you understand
what I'm saying to you?
Moody, do this. Moody, do that.
Moody, don't eat the baby.
What kind of a man are you?
I'm Moody the Dinky lady.
Haven't you heard?
Oh, I can't believe it.
All I know is my girl's dead.
Huh?
My girl's dead.
What kind of man are you?
What kind of a man are you?
We got to go.
Put the fucking flowers on her.
.You like that, huh?
Come on, man. What are you doing?
Hello, Mr. Barlow, how are you?
Well, this is Mr. Carrol.
Yeah, well, I'm just calling.
Yeah, good.
Well, look, I'm just calling in reference
to paragraph 16 of our contract.
And the expected publicity concerning
Mr. Modinsky's recent faux pas.
Yes, we consider it unlikely that the
contract will be fulfilled.
Yes, uh...
That was no public relations
gimmick, you understand that?
Mmm.
That was between Moody
and, uh...
trying not to be aesthetic,
but his conscience...
Well, I think the best way
to handle the matter is to
just turn it over to our lawyers
for clarification.
Don't you agree?
I mean, look, the matter
can be decided in court
if either party
feels it's necessary.
Yeah man. Well listen.
I think that's fantastic.
And and I just uh...
That's fine, Mr. Carl.
- Good.
- Congratulations.
And regards to your wife.
Mm-hmm. Thank you. Yes.
Thank you.
You don't have a contract.
Well, Bert says you have a contract.
But you don't look like it.
You know your star performance at the
hospital?
You look gross-outs like, you know,
uh...
What a thing in the past.
Or haven't you heard that?
We got split up.
You're killing me, man.
We got to split up.
I'm killing you, man.
We're with the future, man!
Hit a dog, kill a dog, man.
If a dog runs across the road,
you know.
Oh, yeah.
Hey.
That's great.
That's terrific, man.
Oh, God.
What the fuck am I doing?
God.
Hey, what happened, man?
I'm Mr. Cool.
Okay, man.
All right, you goddamn bastards.
Where am I going?
Where am I going?
Okay.
It's my responsibility.
Please.
No.
You chill White Star.
I'll tell you fucking something when you
come into me, motherfucker.
You... Turn your lights on!
Please, please.
God.
God damn it.
God damn it.
You can.
Okay, Casey.
This fucker.
God.
Fuck you, man.
What are you talking to yourself for?
You're just talking to yourself?
Huh?
Good job, boys.
That's it.
Shit.
Oh, stop it now, man, if you want to,
man.
If it's too slow for you, because,
man, I...
You're fucking doing hell, man.
You motherfuckers.
You want to fuck with me, man.
You fuck with me!
Hi, friends.
This is Harry Halibut on Radio 66.
I've got good news for you today.
Moody has finally made it at last.
After leaving his former manager
and producer Kenneth Barlow,
he was signed up yesterday by Eurosound,
who are going to present
him live in concert really soon.
Good morning, Dreamers.
This is Harry Halibut on Radio 66.
Heavy radio in the city of Berlin.
In local news this morning,
four youths were found
deader than carp in a local lake.
Apparently of heroin overdoses.
And what do I tell you about fishing and
taking drugs, huh?
In other news,
squatters took over a
couple new buildings
in the northern
part of the city.
And I wish they'd
take over my place.
It's pretty messy. Maybe
they could do something with it.
In music news, Moody, the former
keyboard player from the Purple Rats,
has gone solo.
And has teamed up with
a guy named Kenneth Barlow,
an American producer
who had something to do with
the Rolling Stones back in the 60s.
Anyway, Barlow was born in Heidelberg.
Some say he was the son
of an American spy there.
He worked as a photographer
in Vietnam during the war.
He's been around.
More recently, he was
an ordained minister
in the Sun City Unification
Church in Palo Alto, California.
Now he's discovered Moody.
They're going into one of
Berlin's finest studios this morning
to begin work on an album
tentatively to be titled White Star.
There seems to be a lot
of money involved in that.
And tonight, as a special treat at the
Gomorrah Club, you can see Moody,
in concert, for the first time,
doing his own new music from White Star.
That's Moody Tonight at 9 o'clock at the
Gomorrah Club.
- Hey.
- What did you do, buddy?
- Hey, she's cool, man. Good.
- Hey.
Your gettin' hot out
there, you hear that, kid?
I'm not dead, huh?
Look at that.
He's a big star now.
You look terrific.
- You think so?
- Yeah, you look great.
Your suit. You know
it's dirty back there.
- Oh yeah.
- Yeah.
That's the reason for that, you see.
They never turn you
back to the audience.
Never turn you back to the audience,
my advice.
You know that Alan Ladd wore this in
Shane, but they cut the scene out?
You know that Errol Flynn wore this in
Captain Blood?
Do you know what a
star you're gonna be?
You go out there and play it like
you know it or I'm gonna kill you.
You get that damn kid out there.
Those punks are tearing my place apart!
No, wait, I'm not sending
my sister's kid out there.
The hell you're not!
They're paying to see him, that's why
they're tearing the place apart!
They're gonna see him!
They're gonna see him!
- Get him out there!
- It's your job!
It's your responsibility
to quiet him down!
I said get out of here!
Quiet him down!
Don't let that bother you.
Don't let that fool you.
- You see this?
- Yeah.
Okay, five minutes.
Five minutes, right?
Five minutes, they're
gonna be good and hot.
You know what you're gonna do?
You're gonna go out there and your
music's just gonna cool them right out.
You just believe me.
Don't do that to your hair,
let me do that to my hair.
Don't do that to your hair.
Do it, baby.
Do it, man.
I'll kill you.
What's he doing? He's crazy!
Hello, hello, hello.
Officer, listen.
There's a riot down here.
It's the Gomorrah Club riot.
Officer, yes.
I'm reporting a riot.
And, like, you know, I want you...
Well, one sec...
Yeah, this riot started in the streets.
Yeah, like, get down here.
There's a riot going on.
My star's being killed.
Get down here.
Get those people down here.
You hear me, officer?
I gotta hang up.
Can you hear this?
Listen to this!
Did you hear that?
Now, get down here!
That's YOUR future.
This is White Star talking to you.
White Star, mister.
Who bought it tonight?
You made me a great star night.
White Star. Moody MUdinsky!
How do you like that?
Who bought it tonight?
White Star!
Moody Mudinsky!
What is this shit?
The second coming?
You fucking hump.
Hey. Why you let
him waste my life?
I told you this wasn't the right place to flock
Paul my film. I'm loving it.
Buck you.
Just stay out there as long as you can.
Take as much as you can.
Come on.
Just stay out there.
You're crazy, man.
Hey, listen to me.
You don't even know how crazy.
Crazy, man.
What's wrong with you?
Just stay hanging there, Moody!
Hey, get away from there, man.
Get away from there.
The mother fucker pulled the fight.
Hey. Hey. The mother fucker
called the fight.
Change the cassette.
I'm gonna tell you something.
You know, this is White Star.
This is the future.
What do you know about music?
You thugs.
Come on!
How do you like that?
What do you know about music?
This is White Star.
This is the future.
You thugs.
Come on!
That's it!
Get him out of here!
Get him out of here!
Let's go! Come on!
Let's go!
That was a short concert.
Come on. Don't worry.
I'm sure Stravinsky was booed to start
with.
I can understand that.
Yes, I'm quite sure about Rachmaninoff.
Yes, I even think Beethoven.
If you carry on like this, you're
bound to have a great future.
Frank! Frank!
Wait a second here.
Give me the keys, Frank.
I don't like the fucking beds in this
precinct.
Hey, keep it back to the wall.
Listen to me.
Did anybody see you?
No, and they're not gonna.
You ain't finished, mister.
We just started.
Don't panic on me.
Let's move it out.
The publicity's out front.
You see what I mean?
Out front there.
That door's locked.
The door's locked.
You gotta go out the entrance.
You gotta go out the front.
The door's locked.
Come on.
Keep it going.
Just move it now.
Move it.
You have the evidence, Josh.
Move it.
It's all in the graveyard.
Remember what Winston Churchill said.
It's gonna be locked.
It's gonna be hot.
And there's gonna be something down.
Take a rest.
- It's gonna be...
- Get us out of here.
Come on.
Open this door.
My son's dying in here.
Get me out of here.
Get me out.
Get out, out, out.
- Get in the car. Get in the car.
- Okay.
Knight in shining armor.
It's a knight thing.
Stop it.
Where do you think you're going?
Get in. Get in.
Get everyone in there.
All right.
Get him over, man.
Where's your next gig?
Because we want to be there!
We want to be in the city, man!
Thanks for making me a star, gentlemen!
9.42 in the city.
54 degrees or 12 Celsius
downtown right now.
I'm Harry Halibut
on heavy radio.
Radio 66 in the city.
Big news last night.
There was a riot at the Gomorrah Club.
During the first appearance of Moody.
150 Berlin policemen and one
punker are in the hospital this morning.
Believe it or not, in a riot
that wiped out five city blocks.
There's some kind
of protest movement
by some citizen group this morning
to close down the Gomorrah
Club for good this time.
They can't do that, can they?
And I received an anonymous letter this
morning that's really negative,
predicting no future for Moody.
I can't understand why anybody
would write a letter like this.
From what I've heard about Moody,
he seems like a nice guy, I like him.
And apparently,
Eurosound does too.
Because we have unconfirmed
rumors this morning
that Eurosound is interested in a
possible recording contract with Moody.
Eurosound, it's your sound.
When you're in the
mood for music,
Eurosound Records has
the music for your mood.
Music to dance to, music to dream by,
music that rocks you.
It's fun, it's seductive,
it's explosive.
It's all on Eurosound records and tapes.
Eurosound.
It's your sound.
Listen, Moody's been launched
like a space satellite, you know.
I hope you don't miss the first flight.
Four city blocks demolished for what?
For the sound of the future.
Yeah, it's yours for a hundred.
Can I have a line, please?
We agreed on 75.
You ain't betting on a filly anymore,
mister.
Just let me take care of this first.
Look, the day after tomorrow there's a
promotion party up at the Pender.
Okay? Hang on,
honey, hang on, honey.
We'll close the deal then, okay?
Here's the down payment.
Still no deal.
My business is none of your business.
How is business?
Just go with the plan.
You all right?
It sounds strange.
Hey.
There's a telephone call for you.
Oh.
- Um, who is it?
- It's George.
I think I better talk to him upstairs.
Yeah.
Hey, man.
I got the Moody blues.
Uh, George.
Do you have the contract?
Moody, we should have taken that Banana
Records offer.
Only $15,000, maybe.
But here,
in Uncle Tom's cabin, we
could have made it for that.
Well, so we'll do the next one there.
Moody, Barlow sold me down the river.
You're his White Star.
Well, I could be wrong.
Hey, man.
You'll make it anyway.
Go ahead.
That's him.
That's him.
Hi.
I came by to pick up my belt.
Oh, what a surprise.
Um, I made it into a key chain.
Boy, that looks like blood on the tracks
to me.
Actually, it's a butterfly.
A butterfly.
Well, I think you better keep this
butterfly.
So how you doing?
Oh, great, great, you know.
Everybody wants a story
about my White Star album.
You know, we're
playing it cool till we get
all the marketing
campaign stuff worked out.
It's a big deal, huh?
Big deal.
Yeah, well, we think so.
Hmm.
Barlow's really good.
You know, my manager.
He's great.
But he's upstairs right now.
We got this big contract with EuroSound,
you know.
The money talks.
Money talks.
Nobody walks.
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow, you better believe it.
Money or you're out.
Money talks.
Nobody walks.
Well, believe it or not, you call Mr.
Schlesinger.
His number is 774-9324.
We're having a meeting tomorrow,
and we're gonna close the deal.
Write it down, okay?
Right.
Could you please sign these blank
letterheads?
I'll type up the letters later.
Hey, this is Marcia.
She's a singer.
- This is Mr. Barlow, my manager.
- Hi.
You know, maybe he can
help you out. Or something.
He used to manage the Stones.
Yeah.
Now, don't exaggerate, now.
I was only their tour manager.
- Well, maybe you remember me.
- Yeah?
I was the in-house nurse at the Gamora.
Oh, yeah.
I remember you.
What happened to the tall guy,
huh?
Look at this, huh?
Well, we don't talk about that anymore,
do we?
No, I don't think it's very funny.
I know who started the trouble.
- Oh, you do?
- Yeah.
He's a Turkish Arab.
He's got black curly hair.
And I saw him on the streets
and you were talking with him.
- I was talking with him?
- Yes.
And that fucking mess with those punks?
I sure as hell don't remember anything
and I'm really surprised that you do.
So, Mr. Conners has taken over Mr.
Schlesinger's job.
Things sure move fast around your shop.
Thank you very much.
Your Mr. Schlesinger's
just got his walking papers.
And you're getting yours.
Money talks, nobody walks.
He got what?
That happens sometimes.
What's his successor's name?
Connors.
Connors.
Mr. Connors.
Mr. Connors is in a conference.
It's Barlow, right?
You know, it's about
Moody and, uh...
You know, we almost had a
contract as good as signed, so, uh...
Ah, yes, Moody.
Yes, Mr. Barlow, we remember.
I'm sure Mr. Connors
will be interested in a tape.
Uh, Mr. Schlesinger has the tapes.
Oh, I fear things have changed.
Mr. Connors is concentrating on a
promising marketing strategy.
Well, good for him.
I told Schlesinger that for years.
All right.
Now, uh, would you put Connors on the
phone?
Because I need to talk to him.
Mr. Barlow, I'm sure
Mr. Connors will get back to you.
When he has time.
Well, thank you very much.
I appreciate that.
Did you remember me?
Okay, thank you very much.
I appreciate it.
That's good.
One week, 12,000.
How am I gonna get my money?
Oh, you're gonna get it.
Fine.
If not, you're out tomorrow.
Yeah.
Excuse me, Marshal.
That's the end.
No, that's the beginning.
Because Connors is my man, Jack.
He's kicking us out.
Let me tell you.
In that fucking eight-track shack,
you got $30,000 worth of equipment.
Yeah.
That belongs to you.
Yeah, right.
And we scraped for it a long time,
you know?
Well, so?
Well, so without it, I mean, what,
George can go live in the fucking park.
Well, you wanna get buried with that
nigger in the fucking park?
Go ahead, man.
I can't do that.
I'd have to be a fucking bastard.
Don't you, stupid fucking bastard.
What are you staring at?
I can't imagine.
It's this big of a production.
Thank you.
Oh, I'd love to.
Hey, I'm sorry.
Hey, never say you're sorry.
You know something, man?
You got weird taste.
You want girls that can get
you hundreds of them with...
Tits at least. Yeah, tits.
- Good.
- Yeah, that's right.
You know why?
Because I'm there.
Because I made it.
No, huh.
You make it when I make it.
Yeah. You call me
when you've made it.
You'll make it.
Okay.
To sum it up, you have a young man who's
found his way into the headlines.
The public is on his side.
He's done nothing wrong.
He just wants to play a little music.
But it's not at all certain.
Baby boy can come across with the goods.
So what you've got is just a name.
No, no, no, no.
I've got more than just a name here,
mister.
Connors.
Look at this.
This is an image.
It's a face.
This is more than just a name.
Okay.
You have a name.
Not big yet.
But a clear image.
- That's right.
- Away from punk.
- That's right.
- Clean-cut guy.
Yeah.
Assassination attempt.
- Yeah, well, you know...
- Just a minute.
Facts like that we can
produce on an assembly line.
Mama's boy threatened in his recording
studio.
Police escort to the hospital.
Innocent girls.
Sentimental stuff, huh?
You know?
All that's no trouble
for my organization.
It's for the masses.
Yellow press.
So what you've got is a trading value.
But you don't have a product.
But I do have a product.
White Star, Mr. Barlow, is an accident.
Not a product.
Here, this is a product.
And they're already waiting to buy it.
Record of the month club.
More sales than you'll ever dream of.
Okay, I'll make you a solid offer.
I'll buy Moody and Future both.
But for my music.
One, two, three.
50,000.
Payment due when the records press.
Now look, that you've got to accept.
I don't have to accept anything.
Must cost a fortune just to keep that
thing clean, huh?
You bet.
That's beautiful.
Oh, boy.
Now, I want White Star, Mr. Conner.
Keep a couple.
He's a nice kid.
Take it easy, Mr. Stringman.
Hey.
Hey. That's expensive
easy with it, all right?
Expensive, huh?
You decided to sell it, right?
Yeah, I decided.
It's my stuff.
Yeah. Well, expensive
is expendable, mister.
And a lot of people die early.
You understand what I mean?
Go for the other gig, huh?
Go for this one.
Look, go slow with this one.
- Be cool.
- Be cool?
Cool's for school, mister.
Just help me move this stuff out.
Out!
Prick.
Just get your hands on it
and help me lift it out of here.
We're on the run.
Take this other one.
Be easy with this.
Just be cool with it.
Watch it, watch it, watch it.
It's a little expensive.
You know what I mean?
All right.
Hey, Moody.
Go on. Get in.
You used to have a telephone.
Would you call?
You could take me out dancing.
We'd have a ball.
All alone.
Hey, what are we producing here?
Bubblegum?
I thought we were producing White Star.
That's it, huh?
Let's mix right away.
Look,
as of today, we're spending my money.
As of today, I'm the producer.
Yeah, I see.
I see.
Here.
Yeah, it takes me off the hook.
Here.
Here's your money.
Now you go up and pay him.
And as producer, I'm sure you'll know
exactly what to do next.
Hey, there's only 12,000
here, man. We said 30.
Hey, you paid 30.
I got 15.
We paid 50.
Anyway, you got 13.
This is only 12.
Where's the other 1,000?
You think I'm cheating you?
Huh?
I still want to know where's the other
1,000.
I mean 2,000.
3,000.
And it's here.
Right here, man.
Yeah.
Want to know an asshole?
Here's an asshole.
Right here, man.
There it is.
Yeah, it's the
future. Right. Yeah.
I had 2,000 of these made.
I had 2,000 of them.
You want some more?
Huh? Want some? Pin them.
Pin them. Put them on your friends, man.
Because there's no future.
Yeah.
2,000 of them distributed in every shop,
every school, every disco.
Pepe's having a blowout tonight.
Punk's gonna be there.
You remember the Gamora?
Don't you know how many they are,
don't you?
Okay, wow, huh?
How about 2,000 people screaming future?
No future. Future. No
future. Future. No future.
Man, are you nuts?
- What about my future?
- Don't you understand?
What about George's future?
What about your future, huh?
You want to know something?
Name that baby.
Name that future
because it has a ring to it.
You understand what I mean?
That's marketing.
Marketing.
I want to tell you something.
That's more important than music.
Because I'm promoting you.
Man, this isn't even enough to pay our
debts here.
God damn it, I could have told you that.
That's why I'm your producer.
You want to pay everything
in fucking cash?
Go ahead, man.
But I'll tell you something.
Credit's where it's at.
Credit.
I'll get some.
That's right.
The future knows your future.
Is this the studio?
Let me talk to Barlow.
Hello?
Hey, listen, man.
I got a great idea.
I got 20 points.
I got nothing to do with it.
I'm gonna turn them loose on the studio,
okay?
What are you fucking talking about, man?
It's a fantastic idea,
for Christ's sake.
Just think about it.
A Moody month in the Paragon?
I mean, Jesus Christ, you ain't...
While I was making White Star,
well, you may even...
God damn name in the paper.
I can't stop him, man.
I can't stop him.
Do you understand what I'm saying?
They fucking thwarted
off the goddamn Gamora.
For Christ's sake, and
they're playing Moody's court.
And these fuckers
got nothing to do with it.
They're getting real angry.
And I'm gonna tell you right now, you
better not fucking call the doctor, boy!
Where are we going?
Listen, man.
This is screwed.
This is really screwed.
We gotta give him a
warning or something.
Let that shit get in the car.
It's murder not to warn him, at least.
Shut the fuck up, will ya?
We can at least call the police.
Oh, yeah, invite the police
and the punks to the same party.
That's real cute.
Why don't we call the police?
What do we call the police?
You guys are a couple of scaredycats.
Okay, fine, well, it's your gig.
Damn right, it's my gig.
Come on, Marshal,
let's get out of here.
Come on, Marshal, let's get out of here.
Yeah, get the fuck out of here.
Shit, man, the punks, they're gonna
fucking get him.
They're gonna kill him, man.
How the hell did Vidal know they were
gonna show up here?
He used to manage a punk band,
you know, he sort of knows us.
You know what? You bought it, sucker.
The music is this?
What kind of fucking business is this?
You motherfuckers.
You fucking idiots.
Goddamn, get out of here.
Get out of here.
You fucking motherfuckers.
You fucking assholes.
Okay, all right.
Oh, shit.
Goddamn son of a bitches.
Goddamn bitches, you fuckers.
Hey. Let's burn this son of a batch.
Hey.
This is the guy from the Camorra.
Come here.
You gotta see him.
Come here.
Let's burn the fucker, all right?
Let's burn it.
Hey, man.
He doesn't take your music seriously.
He takes me seriously.
He'd burn your songs if he could.
He's primitive.
Look.
He may be the first person
ever to take me seriously.
Hey. I need to call...
I'm from the newspaper, that
punk's out here. That punk.
Now, you must let me in, lady.
Let me in.
Keep quiet.
Good luck to you.
Bet you're glad to see me.
Frank.
I think you forgot
to game plan a little bit.
You know what I mean?
And I'm not gonna
understand the game plan.
Until I get my money.
I need some money.
Hey, uh, why don't
you do something useful,
like, you know, uh,
get the fuck out of the apartment.
Here they come.
Make it look good!
Stop! Stop! Get away!
Get!
My fucking leg.
Fucker.
Cool it!
Come on, now!
For Christ's sake, lighten up!
Come on, what's happening?
Lighten up here!
- Hey, man!
- Guys, come on!
Jesus.
Hey. Let's do it.
Hey. Fuck that.
Get that--
Get down!
Oh, God.
- Hey, pinch me.
- Yeah!
How are you?
How are you?
Oh, so good.
Oh shit.
Yeah, that's better.
Taxi!
Hey! Taxi!
Eating already, eh?
I can't fucking wait
to see what happens next.
What happens next, you wanna see it?
That happens next.
The cream puff.
That's what I want, right there.
You know, after that?
Patience.
Patience happens after that.
You hear me?
I like frankfurter.
I like mustard.
I like a lot of ketchup on it.
Yeah.
Because, you see, TV takes time.
Believe me. Patience.
It takes time.
It's not like a newspaper.
It's not like Snap, you know.
And there's the article,
and Zippo Zappo, huh?
TV takes time.
Here, here. Beer.
I'd like a beer.
Future. You see, the future.
The future.
Future!
Future, man!
That's where it's at.
The future!
That's where it's at.
You see?
That's what they wanna hear.
That's what the TV wants.
That's what's selling
the idea to the TV.
The future!
The future is always the future.
- There you go.
- Yeah.
And you just, uh, you just, uh,
believe me.
Once we hit TV, just one minute.
Once we hit TV, it's Biffo Box Office,
mister.
It's socket to him right there,
George.
That's your bullshit, you know?
- My bullshit?
- I just wanna know about my music.
I wanna know how
I'm getting back in the studio.
- Your music you wanna know about?
- Yes.
How you gonna get back in the studio?
Do you mind if I smoke a cigarette and
drink a beer and eat some food?
And would you pay the man?
Yeah, E to the B, huh?
- How much is that?
- 6.43.
You know, he's really pissed off.
Big fucking deal, you know what I mean?
I mean, you got out, didn't you?
And they didn't get in, right?
Right, right, right.
Look, we didn't even warn him,
you know?
That was your brilliant idea, remember?
Yeah, nobody got into his studio.
Nobody fucked with his studio.
They fucked with me, man!
They fucked with me, you understand?
Now, what you... I mean, you
probably even lost my clothes by now.
They're right there, right here.
I got them.
I know they're right there.
I can smell them.
Jesus Christ.
I lost my fucking appetite.
Hey, come on.
Finish eating.
Let me have a bottle of red wine.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Thank you.
You're a fucking jerk.
Jerk, man.
Yeah, money talks.
Money walks.
What a bunch of fucking crap, man.
What a bunch of fucking crap.
Pardon me, man.
Hey, come on.
Excuse me.
What is money?
Money's paper.
That's what paper is.
It's money.
That bastard beat the fuck out of me.
I'm surprised, man,
how much paper I got.
That's great, you know.
So turn it into money, huh?
That's right, hot dog.
- Hey, hey.
- You asshole.
Come on, I didn't tip her.
What's this money you're talking about?
Wow. Wow, this is too hot
for me, you know what I mean?
You assholes.
You know something?
It ain't the goddamn fucking washer,
mister.
You know that it's too hot?
It's the money.
Fuck.
Yeah, but so what's this money,
anyway?
Well, you know what
George Raft would say.
This is my last quarter.
That's right.
All right.
We got credit, mister.
Hey.
Didn't that bastard say that
he would pick up the tab for a week?
Huh?
Look, here.
It's not much.
It's just $1,500.
Cleaned out my account.
It's just from some papers
my grandma left me, you know?
- Your grandma left you that, huh?
- Yeah.
Go ahead, take it.
Uh, she might have, uh,
wanted it for your education, kid.
Yeah, I know.
And, uh, you respect the old
lady's wishes too much, right?
Consider it tuition.
If you insist.
Now.
But I used to, uh...
I used to give tips bigger than this.
Yeah, that's probably
why you went broke.
Broke my ass.
Broke my ass.
You know, there's only
one type that goes broke.
And they take chances
and they take risks.
Now, have you ever, uh...
Have you ever heard of a mailman going
broke or an ice cream man going broke?
I had an uncle once who sold ladies'
lingerie.
Bullshit!
What'd he do, sell door-to-door?
Huh, man?
You're talking about,
like, being hard up.
Well, I was never fucking hard up.
Broke! Huh? Oh, boy.
Yeah.
I mean, really going broke.
That's where millions change hands.
You know something?
At that time, uh...
we had millions...
in our hands.
Look at this, man.
Golden toilet seats.
The Royal Garden.
The Glass Cove.
I haven't changed, man.
The times have changed.
The fucking times have changed.
There were real stars.
There were real stars?
Let me tell you.
They weren't like plastic papas,
you know?
With spastic sounds.
They were real stars.
Real stars.
Real stars.
We eat this food.
Real stars.
We were punks, man.
Shit.
Groupies, you know, used to come up at
night.
No big thing, you know.
Lay around naked.
No names.
What do we know?
Dining in bed.
Silver trays.
Then wearing garter belts
as targets, which we supplied.
I mean, which was not
a cheap thing to do at that time.
However, we did...
So, anyway, hey, man, listen, man.
Dig.
Keith.
Keith gets up one morning,
but he doesn't know morning.
Day, night, night, day, he doesn't know,
you know.
He wants to know whether it's day or
night, you know.
I mean, what the hell?
So he opens the window.
And this very valuable Chinese vase...
falls out six storeys down with...
a bouquet of flowers in it.
One minute later, there is the manager
there, in a tuxedo.
And he says that
here's a brand-new vase.
And the girls downstairs, they picked up
all the flowers...
and rearranged them in the vase for him.
And Keith says...
and there's the naked women laying all
around.
Yeah.
And, well, um, yes, well, I mentioned
that, and I have to excuse myself.
Yeah, right.
That was rock and roll.
We changed a lot of shit, man.
And, you know...
Yeah.
We were, uh...
in Nero.
You know, when you're feeling your way
through it.
How about Caligula, huh?
You like that?
Richard the, uh...
Oh, man.
Or Henry the Eighth.
Off with their fucking heads.
But there was rock music.
Hey.
You know, later...
I mean, if we make it, um, you know,
uh, stuff with the groupies, uh,
does it still happen?
You like that part.
Very neat, huh?
You like that?
That's cute.
Yeah, I think they can be arranged.
Because I know this man that, uh,
he owns a tit show.
Yeah, not that kind.
I mean, you know, I
mean, I'm a groupies.
You know, groupies.
Hey, these girls ain't bad, you know.
And they're great women, you know.
And, uh, they got a little experience.
Yeah.
They're, uh, you know.
Shit.
You know something, Moody?
With your face...
I could take you to the top.
I'll tell you something.
You know why I want to do it?
Because I want to show
them that I can do it again.
That's why.
I want to tell you something.
You're gonna have to
come up with your stuff, kid.
You understand what I'm saying to you?
Because, like, I'm gonna go to a half...
Oh, boy, man, am I going in deep,
you know?
I'm going in so deep.
I'm gonna get it here.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- You know, don't give me this shit.
You know, kamikaze heroics, you know.
What an asshole you are.
Listen, let me tell you something.
Just think about the future, all right?
The future.
The future.
We are the future.
Moody...
Me and you are the fucking future.
We got the rest.
Yeah, uh, play a thrill case.
Hey, man.
Dad, dad.
You know, you're a punk sometimes,
you know that?
God damn it.
Sounds like music, you know.
I was coming down the hallway,
you know.
I heard it, and then I went inside and
listened to it.
Yep.
Equals my money in a couple years, bro.
Hey, what's the tune?
You didn't even hear me.
I'm gonna go and get some music,
you know.
Yeah, that's why I'm a musician,
you know.
Mom's forgot a bag out here.
Uh, I'll drop it by her place.
Hey, you know something?
What am I, just not the credit card
to you?
Just not the guy who pumps
your organ, man? Huh?
I just never know whether to take you
seriously, you know?
Seriously?
Yeah.
Are you serious, man?
If I may say so, man.
I am the most scrupulous and most
honorable.
And if I may say so, the most valuable
dude in the whole motherfucking,
like, you know, music business.
And I'm gonna tell you something,
Jack.
Hey, man.
Do you question my sincerity, man?
And you don't trust me?
Well.
You've done me
a little blow, man.
Hey, uh, Bert here tells me you gave the
studio a big, fat advance.
Where'd you get money like that from,
huh?
Well...
Hey.
I got it.
Don't question it.
Hey.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
There's something else here.
There's something else here.
You know, it's right down in my office
here.
Look at this. Look
at this. Here we are.
- Yeah, right.
- Read that.
- Huh?
- Right there.
A sound that enters an area as yet
unexplored.
It almost had to be called future.
What? This guy really said that?
- Peter Fuller?
- Hey, did you read it?
Did he really say it?
Y-eah.
Yeah, he's a friend of mine.
It cost me a very expensive
dinner at the Hilton.
That's what he did, baby.
But I'll tell you something.
There's something else.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I hired two managers.
And they're eight groups.
Um, they're all calling their sound
future.
And there will be more to follow.
Wait, wait. What kind of
groups are you talking about?
Oh, fuck them, man.
They're groups that need a gig.
That's what kind of fucking groups they
are.
You're the star, my man.
You're my man. Now, listen.
Let's go.
Future!
Ha, ha, ha, ha. Yeah.
In the beginning, there was a word.
Let me show you the beginning.
In the beginning.
In the beginning.
Took him.
Oh, shit.
I just keep working so hard.
You know what I mean?
Come on, I got something I want to show
you.
Oh, my leg.
My leg.
What's the matter with your leg?
Oh, not too much.
I'm just not used to walking.
I'm gonna buy a new Mercedes Benz
tomorrow.
You know, uh...
I've thought a lot about, like,
musicians just having ears, you know?
And not having eyes, you know?
Besides Ray Charles and Stevie
Wonder and people like that.
Yeah.
Because, uh...
Have you ever had an eye test?
Yeah, well... Well, I mean, how
about looking right over there?
See that?
Does that... See this?
See all this that you just walked by?
- Huh? See all that?
- Yeah. Yeah.
See that?
See that down there?
Look at all that.
You know what that says?
That says, Moody, White Star, Future.
Can you read that?
Can you read it?
Maybe you're nearsighted, huh?
Why don't you look right there?
Right over there.
See?
Nearsighted.
That's what I say.
Hey.
Mercedes-Benz for me tomorrow.
Not bad, huh?
Not bad.
A tour? What the hell?
Yeah.
Yeah.
An opening concert and a tour.
Yeah, but in two weeks?
I mean, I don't even need to
be out of the studio in two weeks.
I got a press conference
scheduled for you tomorrow.
So they'll know what
you really look like.
You know what I mean?
A tour? A concert?
I gotta have musicians, you know?
I gotta have a show, you know?
I gotta rehearse.
That takes longer than two weeks.
What's the matter with you?
You think this is really gonna happen,
kid?
I mean, what, do you believe everything
you read?
So what? It's not gonna happen?
Why does it say it there,
then, huh? I mean, you read it.
You got these things plastered all over
the place.
It's supposed to cost you a bundle.
Where'd you get money like this,
anyway?
They're on every corner.
There's plenty more
where that came from.
Listen, your music's gonna be on the
radio.
It's gonna be on AM.
It's gonna be floating like waves across
this country.
And I'll tell you another thing,
too.
Newspapers are gonna
be interviewing you.
Yeah, there you are.
There you are.
Let me tell you
another thing, kid.
And you take this from a pro.
A canceled tour is
better than doing one.
So how's it gonna work?
How's it gonna work?
How the hell did this work?
I'm gonna make it work.
I'm gonna make it work.
Adios.
Oh, look, this is the guy.
This is the movie I was
reading about last week.
I read about it in a magazine,
and I'd really like to go, you know?
Yeah, I heard it was a riot.
Yeah, well, I'd still like to go.
I think it's cute.
Come on.
Hey, have a good night.
It's the future.
It's White Star, man.
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha.
Got it.
Here's to the thousands.
Check it.
Did you see the posters, man?
They're all smeared with paint and shit.
Smeared with paint?
Do you know we're late for a press
conference?
Why are you always
getting invites for it anyway?
I was just standing
there in front of this car.
- Where'd you get this car?
- Publicity. It's all free.
Let me drive it.
Let me get in.
- We're late.
- Oh, fuck.
You know how late we are, man.
Put that white suit on.
Oh, man, I am zoned.
Zoned. Take these. Take
these. Take these. Take these.
Hey, keep driving the road.
Put on that goddamn
white suit, will ya?
Goddamn cab drivers.
I wish I could get them off the fucking
road.
We're going to strike.
- Dynamite, huh?
- Dynamite. Yeah.
It's a computerized star.
It has batteries and twinkles.
I only give them to journalists.
Here, here, here, here, here.
Goddamn it. Shit.
Put on that white suit, goddamn it.
- Get down.
- Come on.
Goddamn trucks, get
off the fucking road.
Put it on.
All right, now.
Watch your image.
Lend me your ears.
You died at least once.
What?
On drugs, you died.
You know I'm not into drugs.
Of course you're against drugs.
That's the whole point.
But not because you're some sort of
Midwestern whole grain granola.
You know what I mean.
A little pink-faced Pat Boone here.
But because you've been
through all that, you see.
You've been through it and you survived.
And you were a junkie when you were ten.
You understand?
And you OD'd.
And you were pronounced clinically dead.
And then you saw the light.
The White Star.
Oh, fuck!
Fuck!
Goddamn, what we need is a goddamn good
depression.
So these fuckers can't fucking afford
cars.
Okay, I'm ready, I'm ready.
Image has to fit, you know what I mean?
I can't sell an old saddlebag as a sex
bomb.
Why don't you sell me as a sex bomb?
Then I can keep my mouth shut.
That's exactly right, exactly,
exactly.
Shut up, shut up.
Gives you that mysterious touch,
you know what I mean?
And all that stuff comes out in the
press releases anyway, all that info.
And if you get in any trouble,
any trouble at all,
just remember I'm here to help you.
That's why I'm your promoter, huh?
But you better get on that
site, by that door over there,
because we're coming in and
here's the audience, brother.
Can you stay here?
Wait a minute, let me have your shades.
No, no, you look perfect like that.
I'll be right back, I'll get you in a
minute.
Okay, all you cameramen, I want you over
here.
All right, okay.
It's beautiful.
It is so beautiful, man.
Wait, let me turn the lights down.
You don't think it's too much,
maybe?
It isn't too much, nothing's too much.
Listen, I got this thing's rigged.
Okay, let's take some pictures here.
All right, let's go, okay?
Smile, smile, smile.
Hey, you know what I mean?
All right, you got it?
Okay, stop here.
Where is your video?
Video over there!
Come on, man.
Over there, that's it, that's it,
baby.
Okay, smile, all right.
Okay, cuties, come on in, darlin,
there they are.
Come on, groupies, come on, let's go,
come on in, come on in.
All right, all right, huh?
Autographs, huh?
Ah, who remembers things?
Who remembers things, huh?
Groupies, I promise you, groupies.
Okay, bring the toilets we need.
How to get them naked is most important.
I mean, that's what I say.
Okay, all right, keep signing,
keep signing, keep signing.
Okay.
They're shooting.
My baby!
All right, somebody stole my star!
You understand what I mean?
It's an assassination attempt.
Just relax.
Assassination attempt!
Assassination attempt!
It's an emergency!
I'll get an ambulance!
Oh, my baby!
She's all right.
She'll be all right. She'll
be all right. She'll be all right.
What are you staring at?
Somebody get an ambulance!
Get a doctor, for God's sake!
Get a doctor!
It's an assassination attempt!
She's all right.
She's all right.
Get a pillow for her.
Get in.
Get him a pillow.
Get the child a pillow.
A pillow.
A pillow.
Please, I need a pillow.
I'll get you a pillow.
I'll get you a pillow.
Wait a moment.
I'll get you a pillow.
Daniel, what's going on out there?
They shot at me.
I don't know.
No, no.
I don't know.
They tried to shoot at me.
Good morning.
I'm Harry Halibut on heavy radio
with some very heavy
news this morning.
There was an assassination attempt on
Moody outside his hotel yesterday.
It's on the front pages of most of the
Berlin papers.
And I've been on the phone all morning
trying to clear up rumors about this.
Moody was not injured.
He is okay.
However, a young girl was shot.
And she is in the hospital.
And we hope she'll get well soon.
Man, it's incredible what
happens to this Moody guy.
The other day, all his posters were
smeared with red paint.
And he was involved in some kind
of fight while trying to protect them.
I've been on the phone talking with all
kinds of interested people this morning.
Schoolgirls, school groups,
a couple of parents.
And a peace group that
wants Moody to participate
in some kind of peace movement
that they're planning.
Ever since Moody came onto
the scene a few short weeks ago,
he's brought something
new to the youth of the city.
This idea of future.
And a hope for a better future
for all of us.
And I just wish that my own future were
more certain at this point.
And everyone's been asking me, when
is the White Star LP going to come out?
Well, we don't know.
But in the mail this morning,
I got a tape from Moody.
It's a sneak preview
of the White Star LP.
And I want to play it now for Sandra,
who's in the hospital.
And if you can hear me now, Sandra,
I want you to know
that this is for you.
And everyone hopes
that you get well soon.
This is Moody, a sneak
preview from the White Star LP.
For you, Sandra,
and your future.
Sunglasses, I'm blind.
Farsighted, you know what I mean?
Alright, that's the deal.
Okay, we're in business now, mister.
You know what I mean?
I would.
If you only knew what I meant.
You are a maniac.
Mr. Connors, you are a maniac.
Alright, let's see our future party.
Future party, my ass.
This is future rock, Mr. Smith.
Future rock.
It's written in the contract.
Hey, Conor, I want to talk
to you for a minute. Sit down.
What's this about?
I got some art designs here, you know?
Advertising ideas, you know,
for posters, things like that.
Okay, good.
That hospital idea, Mr. Connors,
is a great idea.
Yeah, yeah.
A TV crew, full TV crew.
Wait a minute, you mean today?
Yeah, I mean today.
See, how long can I keep the kid in the
hospital, right?
I can't keep him there forever.
I mean, like, you know,
pulls at the heartstrings.
Don't it, Mr. Connors? Eh, baby?
Okay, yeah.
Oh, yeah, the cops, the cops.
Now, the cops is a great idea,
and I can arrange that.
How about that one?
I can arrange that.
Listen, Mr. Connors, excuse me.
Uh, look, we've got to press this record
right now.
Thanks for the tip, Mr. Barlow.
No, no, you're welcome, mister.
Now, this is marketing, right?
Marketing, all right?
You just think now.
You think of John Lennon being
assassinated, all right?
You think of that.
You think of a sing-in.
You think of a sing-in like, you know,
in Central Park, right?
And five hours later, those
records are out on the press.
Hot on the beach.
You got it?
Now, that's marketing, mister.
Okay? Hey, Carroll, I want
to talk to you for a minute.
- Hey, Carl.
- I'll be with you in just a minute.
No, I want to talk to you in a minute.
Listen, listen, listen.
There's something really
important to me, man.
What's that?
That's that you don't tell
Moody about the contract, okay?
- Oh, doesn't he know?
- No, no, no.
- No, he don't know.
- No, no, wait a second.
I'm his producer, and I have
the right to sign the contract.
But let me tell you something.
They're laying bubble gum on me.
You understand what I'm saying to you?
They're laying bubble gum on me.
And, like, you know,
And it's not his music.
And I don't know how he's going
to react to that, you understand?
And so, like, you know, listen,
mister.
I have to have this moment with my man.
I have to tell him, see?
Okay?
Thank you very much, sir.
Okay.
What the fuck is going down here, man?
Do you hear me, Bert?
I mean, what kind of drug is he on,
man?
You should know.
Would you get your shit together,
man?
Please, man.
Hey, listen, man.
The hospital, man.
Hey, look at me, man.
TV, the girl.
Do you understand
what I'm saying to you?
The mother, the girl.
Do you remember it all?
TV, the hospital right now.
I'm fine.
Barlow, there's a
telephone call for you.
I'm just fine.
Who's calling me?
It's your bank.
Mr. Barlow.
Actually, I need to speak with
the head of the studio, Mr. Gellner.
I'm glad to help you out.
It's about the guarantee he provided for
you.
Just a formality.
But he put a limited stamp on the form.
I'm sure it was just an oversight on his
part.
But for loans of this amount, we'd like
his personal guarantee.
Since I've already paid out the amount,
I really have trouble.
He'll have to come into the bank.
Hey, listen, listen.
I can pick it up myself.
No trouble at all.
Thank you.
Uh, Bert said somebody phoned from the
bank.
Yeah, it was the bank.
And they actually wanted to talk to me.
Okay.
Barlow, yeah, I want to talk
to Inspector Bloom, please.
Hello, Mr. Barlow.
Well, uh, Moody got
a threatening letter.
Yeah.
What's it about?
Okay.
Uh, the business with the girl was an
accident.
We'll get you yet, you dog, man.
That's what it says.
Who do you think sent it, Mr. Barlow?
It's like, it's like newspapers.
Like, you know, uh, cut out newspapers,
pasted together.
Inspector, now, like, I gave you a
composite picture of the guy.
Why haven't you done anything?
Why hasn't this man's picture been on
television, huh?
Look, Mr. Barlow. We have our methods.
You understand we just can't
override what's worked for us before.
Well, look, I'm driving Moody
over to the hospital right now.
You understand what I mean?
Yeah, and everywhere he goes, there's a
crowd.
I need police protection.
Yeah, that's right, mister.
Because we've got posters all over the
place.
All over town.
And we're planning a tour.
And if that tour's canceled,
if this man isn't caught, the
tour's gonna be canceled.
Now, what do we have to do here?
Huh?
Do we have to have a man killed here?
Look, that's your business.
The police have nothing
to do with a concert tour.
If you want to send out your
man to go on a tour-- we can--
I'm sorry. There's
nothing we can do about it.
You understand that
we just cannot offer...
Well, I can't help that.
You know what I mean?
I can't help it.
He's a star.
Shit. Get yourself together.
I'm all right. I'm all right then.
I just have to piss.
You just hold it.
Hold it.
How much further?
Just down the 147.
Moody! Moody!
Loved it.
Moody. How are you doing?
This place is great, man.
Why didn't you bring me here sooner?
Because I didn't know you really just
sexed.
- Funny.
- Smile with me.
You're really funny.
You ought to be a comedian, you know?
- Yeah.
- A comedian.
Hey, you ought to be in here.
You ought to be in here, you know,
then you could be a lie-down comedian.
- You get it?
- Yeah. A lie-down comedian.
That's what you just did, huh?
- Comedian.
- Funny.
Just any smile you give to the girl.
You understand?
My sisters, huh?
Or the missus.
I gotta piss this.
Hey, listen.
I'm gonna kick the shit out of you,
man.
If you don't get your act together,
I'm gonna turn you all around.
You understand what I mean?
You can't do that.
You gonna blow my show, huh?
Oh, look at that.
It's a real punk army.
Listen, I'm worried about you.
I'm worried about you.
Look.
I want you to smile.
You see the rooms right there?
You stay here.
You understand what I mean?
You keep your stuff together for these
pictures.
Hiya.
You new here?
What do you ask?
I haven't seen you around here before.
Oh, with an eye like that, I'm not
surprised.
You're cute. You're
really cute. It's the truth.
Don't worry about it.
Excuse me, huh?
Hey. What are you doing?
Hey. Give me that.
Barlow.
Get her to crack. Cut the crap.
Anybody want my vase?
Listen to me. Don't you
get it, man? The girl is dead, man.
The kid's dead.
Do you understand
what I'm saying to you?
Moody, do this. Moody, do that.
Moody, don't eat the baby.
What kind of a man are you?
I'm Moody the Dinky lady.
Haven't you heard?
Oh, I can't believe it.
All I know is my girl's dead.
Huh?
My girl's dead.
What kind of man are you?
What kind of a man are you?
We got to go.
Put the fucking flowers on her.
.You like that, huh?
Come on, man. What are you doing?
Hello, Mr. Barlow, how are you?
Well, this is Mr. Carrol.
Yeah, well, I'm just calling.
Yeah, good.
Well, look, I'm just calling in reference
to paragraph 16 of our contract.
And the expected publicity concerning
Mr. Modinsky's recent faux pas.
Yes, we consider it unlikely that the
contract will be fulfilled.
Yes, uh...
That was no public relations
gimmick, you understand that?
Mmm.
That was between Moody
and, uh...
trying not to be aesthetic,
but his conscience...
Well, I think the best way
to handle the matter is to
just turn it over to our lawyers
for clarification.
Don't you agree?
I mean, look, the matter
can be decided in court
if either party
feels it's necessary.
Yeah man. Well listen.
I think that's fantastic.
And and I just uh...
That's fine, Mr. Carl.
- Good.
- Congratulations.
And regards to your wife.
Mm-hmm. Thank you. Yes.
Thank you.
You don't have a contract.
Well, Bert says you have a contract.
But you don't look like it.
You know your star performance at the
hospital?
You look gross-outs like, you know,
uh...
What a thing in the past.
Or haven't you heard that?
We got split up.
You're killing me, man.
We got to split up.
I'm killing you, man.
We're with the future, man!
Hit a dog, kill a dog, man.
If a dog runs across the road,
you know.
Oh, yeah.
Hey.
That's great.
That's terrific, man.
Oh, God.
What the fuck am I doing?
God.
Hey, what happened, man?
I'm Mr. Cool.
Okay, man.
All right, you goddamn bastards.
Where am I going?
Where am I going?
Okay.
It's my responsibility.
Please.
No.
You chill White Star.
I'll tell you fucking something when you
come into me, motherfucker.
You... Turn your lights on!
Please, please.
God.
God damn it.
God damn it.
You can.
Okay, Casey.
This fucker.
God.
Fuck you, man.
What are you talking to yourself for?
You're just talking to yourself?
Huh?
Good job, boys.
That's it.
Shit.
Oh, stop it now, man, if you want to,
man.
If it's too slow for you, because,
man, I...
You're fucking doing hell, man.
You motherfuckers.
You want to fuck with me, man.
You fuck with me!
Hi, friends.
This is Harry Halibut on Radio 66.
I've got good news for you today.
Moody has finally made it at last.
After leaving his former manager
and producer Kenneth Barlow,
he was signed up yesterday by Eurosound,
who are going to present
him live in concert really soon.
