Bergerac (2025) s01e01 Episode Script

Person of Interest

1
MUSIC: Casta Diva
from Norma by Bellini
They talk about the
five stages of grief.
I think that's a myth. I
think there are dozens.
Or maybe it's the
same five, and I'm
I'm caught in this loop,
going through the same
ones over and over again.
And of course, what drink does,
what drink did, was flatten it out.
No No! GLASS SMASHES
You know what I realised?
We say "blind drunk".
Our sight is obliterated,
our awareness is obliterated.
Argh Argh.No.
Argh!
No!
No!
Argh!
I love my wife, present tense,
because love doesn't
end with death.
It just changes shape.
If I'm drunk,
I'm not present, for this
part of our marriage,
I'm absent, obliterated.
BABY CRIES
I drank because
it hurt too much.
I've stopped because
it's meant to.
APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
Thanks for listening, folks.
MOBILE VIBRATES
Jim Bergerac.
Hey.
What happened?
She was having a
meal in a restaurant.
They think it's a bit odd, 14-year-old
kid on her own, but whatever.
Then, the bill comes and
she tries to do a runner.
So, called you, but
you were unavailable.
She got bored after
a bit so gave us
the number of her
grandmother and she is
Oh, God, don't tell me you
So kind of you to pop by.
Charlie. Sorry you
got dragged out.
It's a bit of a mix up. Anyway.
I'll take things from here.
I'd like to make sure my
granddaughter is all right.
I'm sure she's fine.
She's fine, isn't she?
See? So, yeah.
Now, did you drive?
You'll need a thing
for the car park.
Where were you? Where was I?
I was at an AA meeting, since
you ask. Like we agreed.
Word of advice.
After your next "meeting",
buy a packet of mints.
Go home, Charlie.
Look, we've been through
something unimaginable,
after which, a period of adjustment
is to be expected, but this
This is chaos.
Er, keep things in perspective,
shall we? She's a teenager.
Who's been arrested,
and is now in a cell apparently
next to somebody called "Vegas".
As soon as you stop talking,
I will deal with it.
DOOR LOCK BEEPS
Sorry. Er
It's because you don't work
here any you're on leave,
so, the thing doesn't
Hang on, I'll make
you a guest pass.
You have my attention.
Oh, God! Seriously, Dad,
Let's not make this a thing.
No, trust me, it's a
thing. Yeah. You think
you think, because you're my
daughter that I just say the word
and this gets forgotten? I
have to contain this now.
Well, just tell them I'm
acting out. You are acting out!
I mean, this is
just so unnecessary.
Just talk to me.
Did they tell you what
restaurant it was?
It was Tommassi's.
Where we'd all go
to All right, yeah.
I know.
Listen, let's just Can
we just stick a pin in that?
What can we do now? What
do you What do you need?
And there we go. What?
I'm not saying that
I'm just I'm saying
..one thing at a time.
I'd like to stay with
Granny for the weekend.
Right. I meant, like a day out?
But, no. Er. You need
some space, you know.
I need to tidy the
house. That's
That's actually a
really good plan.
DOG BARKS
Oof
TELEVISION NEWS: Returning
to our top story,
the body discovered by police at St
Brelade's Bay has now been identified as that
of Cate Wakefield. Reporters spoke
earlier to Chief Constable Uma Dalal.
Chief Constable, is
this a murder inquiry?
I am not in a position to release
any more details at this time.
Jersey Police don't
have much experience
with crimes of this nature. Are you sure
your officers have the necessary skillset?
Serious crimes of
this nature are rare,
that's true, but the team
will be working tirelessly
to bring this matter to a
swift conclusion. Thank you.
One more question
Give me five minutes.
Hey.Hey.Hey
Oh, look, I wasn't
sure what you needed,
so I grabbed, erm
everything. So I see. Oh,
my God, my bed is so comfy.
And Grandma made me
an omelette this morning
and it was amazing.
Yeah? Yeah. Well,
maybe I should come
and stay. What do
you think, Charlie?
No, you should. I'll muck
out one of the stables.
I Well, I'll come and
pick you up on Monday.
What? We have decided that Kim
should stay here indefinitely,
until you are in a position
to better help her
process what has happened.
She needs an environment that
is calmer. More sober.
Sober, as in? As in
the opposite of this.
And this is Kim speaking, is it?
No, it's me, I recognise my voice.
It's me, Dad,
This is coming from me. I
need you, but not this you.
Yeah. Right. No, I understand.
Yeah, no. The last few
months have Have been
But, no, I am turning a corner.
I've turned a corner.
I'm going back to work.
I don't know if you saw on the news,
the body they found at St Brelade
You're going to be
investigating that?
Er, it happened very
They've asked me to lead,
I'm taking it slowly.
That feels like a big step, Dad.
No, it isn't. Honestly.
This is a new
It's a new chapter. And
I'm ready, you'll see.
And then Then,
you can come back.
Well, there's something
else. Is there? Good.
I want to talk
about Mum. With you.
Yeah, yeah, we do talk about
her. We don't. You know we don't.
Yeah, OK.
I mean, it's weird
that you think that.
But no, of course. We will.
Um More.
OK.Yeah.
Thank you, Dad.Oh
Police Headquarters. St Helier.
Sorry, Jim, she's actually just
really busy, just at the moment.
Just give me two minutes. Could
I just pop in ahead of you?
Hey. Jim? I didn't
see you in the diary.
No, I was just passing and Wendy
said you could squeeze me in.
Er, of course.
Take a seat. How's Kim?
Amazing, she's been amazing.
Give her my love. I'm
sorry, today is
You can imagine.
You saw the news?
I'm just drafting a
brief to the minister.
Can we set something
up for next week?
You said you've
assembled your team.
I've got Barney Crozier
leading. I thought you might.
He's smart.
He's solid.
Ah, he did a good job
standing in for you.
Yeah. Though obviously, he's not
had to deal with anything like this.
He's made a good start.Sure.
I mean, at the start
of an investigation,
there's established protocols. You know my
concern would be when it's up and running,
because then it becomes
about instincts.
Experience.
Jim I'd like to come
back, in some shape or form.
I'm not sure that's appropriate.
Well, it's been seven,
eight months now and I'm
Nobody's denying
I've I'm doing OK.
It's six months, Jim. I know
..when my wife died.
Look, I'm talking about
shadowing, that's all.
A high-profile victim,
it's a different game,
we both know it. Things drag
on, the press get restless,
minister starts
breathing down your neck.
You need someone with experience,
who can bring this in quickly.
You support.
Barney stays the lead.
If that's what you think is
best. And you have counselling.
I'll make a referral
to occupational health.
Sure Sure.
Totally.
Go for a walk. I'll
talk to Barney.
I'm not just going
to drop this on him.
MOBILE VIBRATES
Jim. Welcome back, so good
to see you. How are you?
Oh, my God, so bloody good
to see you. How are you?
I'm OK.Great to see you,
Jim. Hey, Paul, hello.
How you doing?
You think he's back for good?
I think he thinks he is.
Come on.
Jim!
So good to see you.
Look, I just wanted to
say again how sorry I am.
Yeah, yeah, I know. Thank you.
I'll be honest. I'm not thrilled
about this, as a process.
No, I understand that.
I mean it's a mess.
I mean, you were Head of
Crime Services. Then, I was
Acting, technically. And now you're
back, but you're not back-back.
And it's a It's a tangle.
Yeah. You're leading, Barney.
I'm just here to enhance.
We'll work it out.
Right, team, can we gather? I'd
like to get Jim up to speed.
So, victim is Cate
Wakefield, 26.
Married to Julien Wakefield, 30.
And daughter-in-law
of Arthur Wakefield,
CEO of AWE. That's Arthur
Wakefield Engineering.
They and Cate's baby daughter
Lily are all resident at
Arthur's house in St Brelade.
AWE's brand is ethical practices,
environmentally-friendly materials.
It's made them a lot of friends.
Arthur's on various planning boards,
advisory panels,
governmental bodies.
They're popular, connected, and
as far as we can see, clean.
Various daily staff at the
house. Lily's nanny Mia,
31, Portuguese. And
Margaret Heaton,
Arthur's, er, chief of
staff. So, last night,
Arthur, Julien,
and Margaret attended a charity
event at the Opera House.
Thank you. Cate was meant to go
with them, but she had a headache,
stayed at home with
Lily. 60-plus witnesses,
reams of mobile footage
showing them arriving at eight
and then returning home about
two and a half hours later.
And the statements
from all three
say they returned
home at 11 to find
the annex door hanging open.
Upstairs, they found Cate
dead, with severe head wounds.
A house like this must have
security. Cameras up the wazoo.
But the system's been down
for a couple of weeks due to
a dispute with the company that
installed it. Minds are open,
but everything points
to burglary-gone-wrong.
Thief or thieves are
interrupted by Cate,
reach for the first
thing that comes to hand,
that's where it all gets
a little bit Cluedo.
Big, heavy candlestick.
Cate takes two blows,
one to the temple, one
to the back of the skull.
It's gone to forensics,
but we're not holding out
too much hope for prints.
There were some blood traces,
but they were smeared,
which would suggest that the
murderer wiped it clean afterwards.
OK, first we need to establish
who knew there was no CCTV.
I'm putting a list together
now, including employees of
the company that
Arthur's in dispute with.
Yeah, and we need the names
of the Wakefields' current
and ex-employees,
household and business.
Already up on the CMS.
And anyone who's applied
for work with them
but been refused.
Should have it in the next hour.
Great start, guys.
So pleased you think so.
Right, shall we head
to the house, "guys"?
HORN BEEPS
Excuse me, excuse me, excuse
me Any comments on the murder?
Well, well, well. Did you see
who was in the passenger seat?
No.Jim Bergerac.
Really? Who's Jim Bergerac?
Maybe that's why they
were late getting here.
They had to search every
pub in Jersey to find him!
But who is Jim Bergerac?
He's going to be like,
"I should probably just
check on your wine cellar."
LAUGHTER Brilliant!
Mr Wakefield.
Detective Inspector Barney Crozier.
We met very briefly last night.
Let me introduce Detective
Chief Inspector Jim Bergerac.
I'm sorry for your
loss, Mr Wakefield.
Thank you, yes. It's
erm It's horrific.
Er, this opera gala
night that you were at,
Cate was planning to go with you
but she developed a headache?
So, who knew about
the change of plan?
No-one. Maybe the staff.
Was it announced in any way?
On your social media maybe?
My social media?
I didn't think, erm, "woman
with headache" merited
a press release, actually.
I hear you're in dispute with
the company that installed
your security system.
Yeah, well, when they
realised who I was,
a lot of extra costs suddenly
started to magically appear.
Right, but this was two
weeks ago, wasn't it?
It's a long time to leave your
home unprotected, Mr Wakefield.
You know,
I thought protecting
the public was your job,
Inspector. Gosh
How stupid am I?
Yeah, that did sound a smidge
like victim blaming there,
Jimbo. Didn't we all have
to do a course on that?
Yeah. Bit rusty.
Hmm. Right come on,
I'll show you the scene.
Yeah, look, I'll catch you up.
I'm good.
Lesson learned.
It's Julien, isn't it?
DCI Jim Bergerac. I'm
so sorry about Cate.
Here, let me.
I lost my wife.
So, I have an understanding
of what you're going through.
There's something I wish
someone had told me,
when I was where you are.
You need to respect yourself.
There's a temptation
to destroy everything,
including you. Don't do that.
People are going to need you.
Your daughter will need you.
It gets better, then, does it?
So I'm told.
Tim Bruce, Channel Island
Voice. New to Jersey,
I take it? Good to
see a fresh face.
I get a bit sick of
these tired old hacks.
You were asking about Bergerac.
Interesting character.
Let's grab a coffee some time.
I'll give you some background.
"Jim Bergerac.
"Solved the Armstrong
kidnapping ten years ago.
"Tracked down the girl
down to a basement,
"found her chained to a pipe.
"From that, worked out she'd
been kidnapped by this guy,
"John Blakely. And sure enough,
found her DNA in his car.
"Blakely gets ten years.
Bergerac gets a medal.
"First of three commendations
"and the start of a
glittering career.
"Then, six months
ago, his wife dies.
"He's put on compassionate
leave. Hence the drinking."
20 minutes ago, you
didn't know who he was.
That was 20 minutes ago.
Say it again.
Copy that, Sarge.
Barney.
Right, mind if I? All yours.
Oh.
Sorry, can you get
a shot of that?
Yes, boss.
Thank you.
Baby clothes.
Just shoved in there like
someone packed in a hurry.
I take it that's
not THE candlestick.
No, that 1's back at the lab.
It is identical to that, though.
Right. You want me to play
Devil's Advocate, right?
I don't remember saying that.
These jewelled egg things,
someone could easily
stuff them in a bag or
a pocket as they go
past. You reach the top,
your eyes are drawn this
way, to the bedrooms.
What do you find in
bedrooms? Er, watches,
jewellery But no, you go
that way, to the nursery.
What are you going
to find there?
Wait, what thief takes
things on their way in?
Nah. It's pitch black,
they're confronted by Cate.
She scrambles back,
yells for help,
they follow her in,
try to shut her up
Candlestick. Bosh.
She reels around.
Bosh. They scarper.
Where was the
candlestick? On the floor.
No, before it was used on Cate.
I'm guessing on the opposite
side of this little island.
So, yeah, they're in the
doorway trying to shut Cate up,
how do they reach that?
Look, I'm not saying that it
wasn't burglary gone wrong,
I'm saying let's not
exclude everything else.
This guy
Right?
DCI Bergerac? Margaret Heaton,
Mr Wakefield's Principal
Private Secretary.
I thought I should say hello.
Er, there's a bag
packed in the nursery.
Would that be the
nanny? Mia, is it?
Correct. Sometimes,
if Mr Wakefield junior
and his wife are
away for the night,
Mia will take Miss Lily
back to her own apartment.
OK, do you know
where Mia is now?
I believe she's already
been interviewed.
Belt and braces.
Of course. This way.
Mia, this is DCI Bergerac.
He'd also like to ask
you a few questions.
Thank you.
I know what a
difficult time this is.
Erm
Was there anything
else, Margaret?
Oh, I just thought,
if there's anything
Mia can't answer
Right, well, I'll know who
to ask. Thanks so much.
Is this Lily?
Oh, she's She is beautiful.
She sometimes stayed
with you, is that right?
In your apartment?
Cate and Julien had
a lot of engagements.
Some days, I couldn't wait
up for them to return, so
I would take Lily home, bring
her back in the morning.
But not last night.
I was going to,
so that Cate could go
to the opera thing,
but she changed her
mind, stayed at home.
Right, because in the
nursery there is, erm,
like a little bag, of
baby clothes in it.
Cate must have just
forgotten to unpack it.
How were things between
Cate and her father-in-law?
She liked him, he
was kind to her.
And between Cate
and And Margaret?
Good.
Very good.
One big happy family, then.
Have you shown them the letters?
Who knew about the CCTV being down,
aside from myself, you, and Julien?
Cate could have told
someone, I suppose.
But other than the
staff, there's no-one.
You think it was one of the
staff? Opportunity, motive,
means It's how
it usually works.
So, I want them
gone, all of them.
But this is Have you
shown them the letters?
This has noth
This has nothing to do
with the damn letters!
Every one of them. Today.
Oh, and change the locks.
Good morning.
I'm Detective Inspector
Barney Crozier.
Between the hours of
8pm and 11pm last night,
a young woman was killed.
She has been identified
as Cate Wakefield.
Er, Chief Inspector Bergerac,
have you identified
a prime suspect?
Give us a chance, Tim.
Er, yes. As you can see,
Jim Bergerac is assisting us on
the case. We're asking anyone
Are you sure you should be involved
in such a serious case, Mr Bergerac?
I'm not sure I
understand the question.
Well, have you had to reassure
the family that you'll
be able to stay focused?
We're incredibly
lucky to have someone
with Jim's experience
on the team.
Anyone with any information
should contact police immediately.
Thank you.Detective Can you tell
us any more? over here, please.
Does this mean you're
back full time?
Jesus, was that a
reference to your wife?
It was a reference
to me drinking.
Well, it's out of line, though.
Find out who she works for. On it.
I'll say something.
How'd it go with Mia?
Fine. I don't know. No, weird.
Well, someone had to tell the
burglar there was no CCTV.
Hang on, I thought we agreed
that burglar was just one option.
Did you ask Mia about the bag?
Yeah. Erm
She thinks Cate packed it before
she changed her mind about going to
the opera. So like
I said, burglar.
No Anyway, I've
got a job for you.
I want you to go
through all the calls to
the Incident Room.
Give them a ring,
see if there's anything
worth chasing up.
What? No. Normally, you
get a DC to do that,
and 99% of those
calls are bullshit.
Well, there's always the 1%.
Besides, you want to
enhance, don't you?
How's it going?
Yeah, pinch me.
What have you got?
Individuals who applied to
work for Wakefield's company
but were rejected. One
name does spring out.
You are kidding me!
When sorrows come,
they come not as single
spies, but in battalions.
Yeah, yeah, fucking
right they do.
Where's Bergerac going? I've asked
him to look through the call logs.
Well, I can do that. No, that's
all right, he was really up for it.
Only, I need to tell him about
this. He was the one who
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Easy, easy, tiger.
That's just a name
on a list for now.
Yeah? If he sees that, he's
going to get distracted.
So, why don't we
keep this between us?
In the meantime,
you look into his
movements last night.
Do that discreetly.
Don't spook the horses.
RING TONE
Hello? Er, good morning,
is that Sandra Cook?
Yes, speaking.
Hi, this is Detective Chief
Inspector Jim Bergerac.
Oh, right.
You left a message saying you had
some information which may assist us
in our investigation. Yes, Yes, I
did. I'm not sure if it's any help,
but last night,
I had this dream.
I think it was the husband.
I just think he
looks really shifty.
Actually, it's not about that. It's about the
bastard upstairs and his bastard flamenco.
Yeah? Your mum.
My mum what?
SNIGGERING, HANGS UP
Bad news. I checked out
the Shh, shh, shh.
Them er the name you
wanted checking out.
It's a shame. Thought
we were onto something.
Yeah, I'll get over it.
Er, what you going to do now?
Put it all on our CMS? Yeah.
No, good. Show me again.
So, put that bit
on high priority
and that bit on medium priority.
I did say that out loud, yeah?
Yeah Yeah, yeah, sure.
DCI Bergerac? Yeah.
Oh, good, it is you.
Er, Pete Benedict,
your new counsellor. Look,
I mean, we're not scheduled
to start until tomorrow.
But I was just passing by,
thought I'd introduce myself.
Yeah, look,
tomorrow's not great.
But when things calm down, I'll, give
you a call and we can sort something out.
I literally spend
half my week here.
Look. This is a mandatory stipulation
of your involvement in the case.
Well, that's what Uma said.
OK, listen, no offence, Pete
Already love where this is going. ..I
only agreed to this to appease Uma,
not because I need it, because I'm
actually here to solve a fucking murder.
But fine. I feel it's
all getting too much,
I give you a call -
how does that sound?
Understood.
Let's talk about that tomorrow.
I'll email you the details.
Nothing of any use
on the call log.
OK. Always worth
checking, though.
Pop that on the CMS, yeah?
Someone to see you, John.
Life on the outside
treating you well, John?
Oh, it's not without
its challenges.
I need to know your whereabouts
between 8pm and 11pm last night.
Around the time the
Wakefield girl died, right?
This going to be a
regular thing, then?
Every time there's a major crime on the
island, I can expect a visit from you?
Well, if it fits your
offending profile.
Except, we both know that I
don't have an offending profile.
Two weeks after
you were released,
you applied for work on a
Wakefield Construction site.
Didn't even get an interview.
Must have been frustrating.
Oh, I don't like to
dwell on these things.
"Get rid of all
bitterness, rage and anger,
"brawling and slander, along with
every form of malice." Ephesians 4:31.
You're kidding me. Oh, there's
a lot of time to kill in prison.
I found His light.
And with His light came
the power to forgive.
Specifically, you.
Although, some days
are easier than others.
I admire your consistency.
You sang the same fucking
song all through your trial.
No-one believed it then.
Inspector
Jim
Listen to me.
The relief when you
surrender, to God's plan,
in my case, and to
the truth, in yours
..it's beautiful. Tell me where
you were last night, John
..and you won't see me again.
Killing Cate Wakefield.
There.
I confess.
Ah, Mia. Perfect timing.
In light of recent events, I'm
afraid we'll be letting you go.
Effective immediately. You'll
be given a month's salary.
This is as per your contract.
You'll see it's just
above the NDA clause.
You're.. You're firing me?
I believe you have a set of
keys to Mrs Wakefield's car.
What about Lily?
Yes, leave her too.
I didn't tell him anything.
When I spoke to the policeman,
I didn't say a word.
Well, why, would you?
There's nothing to say.
BABY CRIES
When Barney and I visited
the crime scene this morning,
in the nursery, we
found a small bag
of clean baby
clothes which looked
like they'd been
gathered in a hurry,
and shoved in a bag. On
the way into the nursery,
there are several
small, expensive items,
all left untouched. We've been
looking at this all wrong.
Cate wasn't killed because
she walked in on a burglary,
but an attempted abduction
of Lily Wakefield.
Now, could be a business rival,
a former member of staff,
someone with a grudge.
It's a long list.
But one name really sprang out.
John Blakely.
Now, for some of you,
this was before your time,
so, a bit of background.
John didn't pop onto our
radar until his early 20s.
Nothing major, credit card fraud,
one count of resisting arrest.
He got a job on a
building site as a joiner,
and he calmed down for a bit.
But then he gets sacked
after getting into a fight,
and so he kidnapped the
14-year-old daughter of
the construction company's CEO.
What Jim is too modest to
mention is that he found
the girl and he brought
John to justice.
John was sentenced to 15 years,
released after ten on parole.
Then, he applies for a job on a
building site run by, guess who?
The Wakefields.
His application is
rejected out of hand.
Then an ANPR camera
picks up a car registered
to John Blakely, half a mile
from the Wakefield's house at
the time of crime. Now,
look, this afternoon,
I spoke to John at
work. He was defensive,
he was evasive. He claims
he found God in prison.
Maybe he did, but for
someone with John's history,
a rejection like that from Arthur
Wakefield's company is all it would take.
It's good.
Bit of a coincidence that your
prime suspect is your famous collar.
That kidnapping's not the only
crime I've solved, Barney.
No, no, and with your
wealth of police experience,
you don't need me to remind
you that you pitching up at
John's work like that
I mean, that could be
seen as harassment.
No, I kept it convivial.
OK
OK, I buy it.
Let's bring him in.
Great. We're going full
bells and whistles on this.
What can uniform spare?
What do you reckon? Five
minutes before John cracks?
No, thanks. I'm
not a betting man.
Interview, John Blakely.
September 4th, 2024.
Detective Chief Inspector
Jim Bergerac leading,
along with DC Steve Hobson.
John.
Jim.
You work at Winsford's boatyard.
This is a work placement since
your release from La Moye Prison.
Yes. What time did you
leave work last night?
Around 6:30, 6:45. What
did you do after that?
