and arrogant kid.
I would tell anyone that would listen
that I was gonna
be the best golfer in the world.

This guy's the same skin color as I am.
[reporter] Do you think
you can win the Masters this week?
I do.
[man 4] The PGA TOUR is the pinnacle
of men's professional golf.
[woman] There's just
a whole different level of competition.
[man 5] There are
over 50 tournaments a year,
with over 100 golfers at each event.
[woman] Any player will tell you.
You cannot emulate
the feeling of a major championship.
[man 6] If you don't win a major,
you can't be considered
one of the all-time greats.
There's nothing like the life of a golfer.
It's a traveling circus.
[announcer]
This is starting to get interesting.
If you're gonna be a pro golfer, you have
to accept that it'll be a wild ride.

There is a power struggle
going on in golf.

of the biggest names in the sport.
Everything's got a price, I guess.
It's not really like anything
that we've seen in sports before.
[woman 2] It's rattled the golf ecosystem,
hasn't it?
Honestly, it's going to shape the future
of professional golf.
[man 6] The golf world is teeming
with storylines right now.
[man 10] The game has never been more
controversial than it is this year.

in so many different directions.
What's noise, and what's not noise?
You can't, almost, believe
what's happening in the game.
I did not envision any of this happening.
It's a totally different situation now,
and anything can happen.

since we were 13.

because it's like it wasn't me.

Jordan turned pro before JT did.

and JT's reputation at that time
was kind of Jordan's friend.

[Thomas] He's one of my best friends.
We're always gonna pull for each other,
but at the same time,
you know, I hope that I beat him
at every single tournament that we play in
for the rest of our life.

Gotta make it seem like I can do something
for myself every once in a while.

a year and a half or so
when I started screwing around
with plastic clubs.

[Thomas] My dad

[Thomas] He's been
a club pro for a long time.
My grandpa was a PGA pro
for 50-plus years.
If I look at the order, I should be able
to find it. Yes, still here.
Looks like we started in '99,
so he'd have been six years old.
Kind of cool.
Looks like we stopped in 2021.
Guess he reached the end there.
[chuckles]
If I was going to play a sport, it wasn't
gonna be anything other than golf.

[Thomas] It just so happened
this was, fortunately for me,
the only thing I was good at.
[man laughs]
Thank goodness.
[cheering]
[Thomas] So I pursued a career in it.
[announcer] And Thomas
with the finishing touches.
Third generation PGA professional.
[fan whistling]
[Thomas]
Winning my first major was awesome.
But, um, haven't won another since then.
I'm eager. I'm ready. I know
that I'm playing well enough to win.
To be perfectly honest, just kind of
pissed off I haven't gotten it done yet.
[man] How is your relationship with Jordan
nowadays? Are you guys still tight?
Yeah, uh, he's the best man at my wedding.
So I hope he'd say the same.

two of my closer buddies out on tour.
Yeah, I'd do just about anything for them.

[Fowler] We're, in a way,
kind of all out there and in it together.
You do get a sense of satisfaction when
you do see a friend succeed and play well.
But there's also kind of an underlying
kind of kick in the butt, like
I don't want to see him beat me.
I wanna go beat him.

When's the first time you met?
Was it a golf tournament?
Yeah. It was here in Texas.
Our 2011 high school class
was really strong.
I mean, there's probably a dozen guys
that still have tour cards 10 years later.
So it was really competitive,
and we were one and two in the country.
You know, when you watch both of them,
their passion is to be the best,
and Jordan just came out with that flash.
That's never gonna happen again.
It's not like Jordan's dropped off.
Winning that many majors early on, I mean,
that's hard to continue to do that.
And then you have Justin Thomas, who's
been getting better and better and better.
And you could say that Justin
has closed the gap on Jordan.
But Jordan still has the potential
to be great.

Golf on the PGA TOUR is difficult, tiring.
It's stressful.
But we just know
there's gonna be ups and downs.
This game's a roller coaster ride.
[Thomas] I just feel like if I just go
for a weak left hand
and try not to dig,
it's never really gonna get in trouble.
[Thomas] If you're competitive
and a good player,
all it takes is one week
and your life changes.

There's a full field

higher and higher as the days go on,

when I was hitting shots on the

PGA TOUR event is to win,
but when guys actually do,
they don't just get the trophy
and the first-place check.

and sponsor deals.
You went there to win a golf tournament,
and you end up turning into a celebrity.

is because you perform and you succeed.

of a 40-minute flight there and back

it just totally made sense.

It's really screwed up to say,
but it's almost like you try harder.

circled on his calendar
because he needs it
to complete the Career Grand Slam.
That means winning
all four major championships,
which is a feat that only five players
in the game's history
have ever been able to accomplish.
If he could win and finish off
the Career Grand Slam,
that would cement Spieth's status
as an all-time legend of the game.

having the defending champ here this week?
And just the whole Saudi golf story.
What's your take?
It's unfortunate Phil's not here.
