[lively chatter]
DANNY: What a game. What a game!
- Calm down, Dad.
- Not gonna calm down.
- I have reasons to celebrate, okay?
- Yeah?
It's your first day on the
job and a Mets win over
the stinkin' Red Sox. [people booing]
- MAN: Shut up!
My first day is tomorrow,
and I'd like to live to see it,
- so
- DANNY: You'll be fine, Sean.
And not for nothing,
you were in a coma three weeks ago.
Forgive me for being excited
that you're gonna follow in
the family footsteps, okay?
- Not nervous, are you?
- No.
I can stay a few more days,
- keep an eye on you.
- I'm fine, Dad. I [chuckles]
- I'm serious. All right.
- I'm good. I'm more than fine.
Any fear, any hesitation
- Compartmentalize? I know.
- That's right.
I'm taking those feelings,
putting them right here
- in my pocket, just like you taught me.
- All right.
- I'm ready.
- All right.
Then I hope Jonah's ready
to keep up with you.
How's that for fresh paint?
You nervous about tomorrow,
shooting like that?
You know, one of them's
out of center mass.
- Show-off.
- That's right.
Lena, just give me the big sister advice
that you came here to give me, please.
What happened to your
childhood best friend Sheila?
We stopped hanging out
after junior high.
Yeah. Why?
Because we kissed, and it got awkward,
but you don't have to worry,
because me and Sean
- don't plan on kissing.
- Well, you're not gonna need to,
'cause you've already changed
the nature of your relationship.
It's the same as Sheila.
I don't want you stuck
in the sidekick zone.
- He's my best friend.
- DANNY: No, no, no, no, no.
Tomorrow, friendship
goes out the window.
Okay? It's all about
partnership tomorrow.
- Mm-hmm.
- No more friendship.
That's a whole different ship.
LENA: Every partnership
has a hero and a sidekick.
And you, Jonah Silver, are the hero.
You are Sherlock.
What?
- You know Sherlock and Watson?
- Yeah.
Tomorrow's gonna set the
tone for your partnership,
so you got to show Sean who's boss,
or you'll be Watson forever.
- You got to be Batman, not Robin.
- Mm-hmm.
Establish yourself right out of the gate
so nobody thinks that
you're getting a free pass
just 'cause you're a Reagan.
This isn't New York.
I'm the only Reagan in Boston PD.
That's true. You are the
only Reagan in Boston.
Plus, Jonah's got way
more to worry about.
Both his sisters are cops,
his mom's the D.A.,
- his dad was a judge.
- Right.
So, tomorrow, you got to
make sure that you drive,
- that you pick the music
- JONAH: Wow.
You have some serious
partnership baggage, huh?
And make sure you pick lunch,
'cause otherwise,
you're gonna be hearing Sean talk about
how the food is better in New York.
Trust me, I've been
there with new partners.
You got to drive,
you got to pick the music,
and you got to pick where you get lunch.
Sean and I have been best
friends since the academy.
We are gonna be fine.
All right, that's enough
pointers out of you.
- All right.
- Let's just enjoy
your last day here and then
get you back to New York.
Trying to get rid of me already, huh?
No, it's actually been nice
having you around, you know?
All the doctor's appointments and rehab.
Thank you.
It's been good for me, too, kid.
[gunshots in distance]
- [people screaming]
- Get out of the way.
Police! Move!
NYPD! Move it!
Move out of the way!
Step back! Back up!
- Get a bus.
- Huh?
I said call it in, Sean.
Come on!
Yeah, this is Officer Sean Reagan.
Shots fired outside of Fenway.
Appears to only be one victim.
We're gonna need EMS.
Hey, guys, get back! Go. Come on.
This is an active crime scene,
okay? Get back!
Dad, what the hell's going on?
I don't know.
[camera clicking]
[indistinct police radio chatter]
Trouble follows you, huh?
- Only in Boston.
- [laughs]
- Thank you for calling.
- Yeah.
- Is Sean okay?
- He's good. He gave a statement
and went home to rest for tomorrow.
I was first on the scene.
That why you call?
So we could work it together?
Technically, I am still on loan to BPD,
and you seem to still be riding solo.
Sure you won't get distracted?
Sean and Jonah's first tour?
Ah.
Know you were helping Sean
through rehab for a whole month,
- so you got to be nervous for him.
- Yeah, I'm good.
I can put that aside.
I know how to compartmentalize.
Well, all right, Brooklyn.
What do we got?
One vic. Male, white, middle-aged.
Single gunshot wound to the back.
Gagged, bound. In silk pajamas.
LENA: Someone roughed
him up pretty good.
Yeah, they did.
CSRUs are scrubbing for shell casings.
We got a witness, too.
Excuse me, sir.
Detective Reagan, Detective Silver.
Can you tell her what you saw?
He jumped out of a blue van,
ran to the park.
I heard shots go off,
and he just dropped.
A-And then the van took
off around that corner.
Did you get the plates?
Make or model?
No.
All right, thank you.
[siren wailing]
We need that footage.
Fenway is surrounded
by security cameras.
Yeah. What's your mom doing here?
What is the district attorney
doing at our crime scene?
Hey, Mom, what's going on?
- You're working this case?
- Yeah.
Killer shot into a crowd where
me and my son were walking
and killed this guy.
I assume you haven't
I.D.'d the victim yet,
otherwise there'd be
cameras here by now.
- Why? Who is he?
- Winston Ballard.
He walked away from a
fortune to move forward
as a whistleblower in my
case against Lou Malakov.
Ponzi scheme guy. That's a huge case.
Yeah. Winston's testimony
would've been a sure conviction.
It would've brought justice
to a hundred families
that Malakov stole from.
Any idea what he's doing around Fenway?
MAE: That's what I was gonna ask you.
Stick around, work with Lena,
find out who did this.
Ready to run it back, Brooklyn?
Try and stop me, Beantown.
KARIM: Attention.
Officer Reagan, Officer Silver,
welcome to the rank and file.
They say the police belong to the people
and the people belong to the police,
but above all,
you're partners,
you belong to each other.
Look out for each other.
Something happens to one of you,
it's the other that's
got to tell the family.
Get your patrol assignments at the desk,
come back in one piece.
Dismissed.
JONAH: Bruh, it's been
a rough three weeks.
Good to have you back.
- Uh
- Oh.
I'm sorry.
You, uh, you nervous about today?
I was just thinking about the guy
that got killed at Fenway.
Kept me up last night, you know?
My dad and I were standing right there.
It was crazy.
Hey, we've been working towards
this since the academy.
All right? It's gonna be great.
- Yeah. Yeah.
- Okay?
Yeah.
MAE: Can you tell us what happened,
Mrs. Ballard?
They crashed into the apartment,
tied Winston's hands.
They were white. I could see through
the-the holes in the mask.
You say "they." Are you saying
there was more than one?
No, I-I couldn't tell whether
it was a-a man or a woman.
They didn't talk.
They just started hitting
Winston with a gun.
I was so scared.
And then they took him.
They pushed him into a blue van.
Can you think of anything else?
[whispers]: No.
MAE: Mrs. Ballard, I
You were supposed to protect us.
There were supposed to be
cops watching our house.
I am truly sorry for what happened.
Winston blew the whistle on
Lou Malakov's Ponzi scheme
because he wanted to do the right thing.
But I begged him not to come forward.
Detectives Silver and Reagan
are outstanding investigators,
with the full resources of the
Major Case Unit behind them.
We will get justice for your husband.
Call me if you remember anything.
NAOMI: Thank you.
She's right.
I rarely get involved with these cases.
25,000 cases flow through
this office every year.
I have 160 prosecutors,
but her husband took a big risk,
so it inspired me to
make personal assurances
I shouldn't have made.
I failed that woman.
Help me make this right.
Tell me you got a lead.
We got the security
footage on the blue van,
but there's no plates.
Couldn't even tell make or model.
It's just a dead end.
I'm sorry.
Unless, of course,
we could speak to Malakov.
He's so cocky, maybe he'd slip up
and say something he shouldn't.
It's the only lead you
have for the moment?
With your blessing, it is.
He's on bail at his house in Lexington.
Maybe we should pay him a visit.
Yeah.
MAE: Be safe.
[busy chatter]
[knocks]
- Hmm?
- KEITH: Superintendent Silver?
- This is, uh
- I know Officer Min quite well already.
Have a seat, Sylvia. Thank you.
Yes, ma'am. It's been a while.
You were protection
detail on a whistleblower
and left your post.
And he ended up shot outside Fenway.
Help me understand.
I will accept whatever
punishment you see fit,
but if you're gonna ask for my badge,
I respectfully request a union rep.
I need to maximize my pension.
It's just me and the kids now.
I was sorry to hear
about Frank's accident.
Let's start with what happened,
and we'll sort out the
repercussions from there.
It was shift change,
and I got a call from June's school.
She fell off the monkey bars
and was being taken to the E.R.
Raines was supposed to relieve me,
but he was late.
He said he was close,
just around the corner.
- So I left.
- June okay?
Fractured her wrist.
But you know protocol is not to
leave your post until relieved.
I messed up.
A man is dead,
and I'll never forget that.
I just didn't know what to do.
June needed me.
You're on a desk until
I finish investigating
and make my recommendations.
[sighs]
EDWIN: Heavenly Father,
I thank you for this
food to nourish my body
so that I may do your will
and especially doughnuts.
SARAH: Grandpa.
Sneaking doughnuts?
- Sarah.
- Really?
[chuckles] What are you doing here?
Well, I came to see you.
Was told you were taking a walk.
Oh, Sister Lyn must have been mistaken.
I said I was taking some air.
- The rest is not her business.
- Mm. Mm-hmm.
You hear about that murder
at Fenway yesterday?
Yeah, it's been all over the news.
Poor guy stepped up
to do the right thing
and got killed for his efforts.
That's why I'm here.
Couple of my cops were
supposed to be watching
the whistleblower.
They dropped the ball,
now the whistleblower's dead,
and Mom's case is imploding.
One of the cops who dropped
the ball is a friend.
Sylvia Min.
Sylvia. I remember her.
You brought her to dinner a few times.
We rode together for a
while when I was on patrol.
Her husband died recently.
You have friends on the
POST Commission, right?
[laughs softly]
If you are here to ask me to intervene
on your friend's behalf
I talked to Sylvia, I heard her side.
I'm gonna talk to the other cop soon.
Between the two of them,
they left a witness
unprotected and he was killed.
- I assume they'll be punished.
- But how severely
will come down to my recommendation.
I see.
And the review board can either mitigate
or amplify the punishment, so [sighs]
you want me to put in a good word.
Your voice carries weight.
Exactly why I stay out of these matters
- when family's involved.
- [sighs]
Please.
Consider putting in a
good word for Sylvia.
She is a good cop.
She just made a mistake.
That's it. Thank you.
- EDWIN: Love you.
- Love you, Grandpa.

I thought you liked that song.
I well, I-I do like

He's got the cash bag.
[tires squealing]
- Go, go. Go.
- I got him.
BPD!
Drop the cash!
- Stop!
- [tires screech]
[horn honking]
[groaning]
[tires screech]
JONAH: Where is he?
He's fast. I lost him.
He's up ahead. He's at the bus stop.
Okay, you stay put.
I'm gonna go around back.
You funnel him to me!
He gets in the crowd, we'll lose him.
I got to go.
We're gonna lose him.
I'm gonna go now, Sean.
SEAN: No. Just wait for
me to get into position.
JONAH: Move! Boston police!
SEAN: Hey. Hey.
- Where'd he go? You spooked him.
- I-I thought I had him.
What the hell, man?
Why didn't you wait for me
- to get into position?
- Sean.
All right. Talk soon.
Sean and Jonah's first
callout didn't go great.
- They okay?
- Yeah, they're fine,
- but their perp got away.
- Huh.
You know you can't stop
bad things from happening.
I know that. I just find it ironic
that you're the one who's
distracted by their first tour.
I mean, if that isn't the pot
calling the kettle black,
- I don't know what is.
- [laughs]: Oh, ho, ho!
Well, I'm not sure how,
but I think that's racist.
- Is it?
- Mm.
[chuckles]
No, really, is it?
LENA: Thank you.
[clears throat]
DANNY: Mr. Malakov.
Detective Reagan.
This is Detective Silver.
Just wanted to ask you a few questions.
I've seen the news, Detective.
I didn't kill him,
if that's why you're here.
But this certainly puts
a Winston-sized hole
in the D.A.'s case.
You know, I think I might win.
Mr. Malakov, uh,
sorry to interrupt your
- cute little morning drink
- Your name's Silver?
The daughter, right?
How's the D.A. doing?
I mean, this must be a blow.
Says the guy who probably
had Winston killed.
Gun!
I'm on the shooter.
DANNY: Okay!
Oh, damn it.
[tires squealing]
Okay. Hold on.
Don't you die on me.
What?
- Win
- Win what?
What are you saying? Hey, look at me.
Win what? Damn it.
[panting]
Hey.
He's gone. There's a bus on the way.
Well, we found our blue van.
Shooter peeled away in it.
- Smashed the gate out front.
- Well, based on his known enemies,
that could mean the shooter
is one of, I don't know,
10,000 people?
Well, at least the CSRUs
can pull a paint sample from the gate.
- Finally something to go on.
- Yeah.
You all right?
Second person that's died
in my arms this week.
It's the second time this
maniac fired in my direction.
When we catch him, it's gonna
take everything in my power
not to kill him myself.
SARAH: You're a hard man to
track down, Officer Raines.
TODD: Superintendent.
I was just visiting my mom.
- She's sick.
- Lowder Brook Assisted Living.
I know. I'm sorry to hear that.
I assume you know why I'm here?
I was late for my shift.
And a man died under BPD protection.
I feel bad about that.
Okay, look, I was just
a few minutes late.
I was with my mom.
My captain's been cutting me
slack considering her condition.
I'm sorry for your situation,
Officer Raines,
but it's not an acceptable
excuse for dereliction of duty.
Do you have anything
else to say for yourself?
No, ma'am.
Except that I am sorry.
You're on a desk until I
make my recommendations.
My name is Naomi Ballard.
Yesterday, an intruder entered my home
and violently abducted
Noah, we need to file a continuance
while we rebuild the case.
Malakov's dead.
Isn't that the whole ball game?
Naomi Ballard is making
the press rounds,
calling for an end to the Malakov case
now that Lou's dead.
Poor woman, she just
wants her life back.
I can't say I blame her.
So end it.
And if we don't continue,
the victimized families
can't sue for damages,
but that's only if we win.
If we continue this trial,
we risk losing public support.
MAE: That's right, Charlie.
And losing the battle of public opinion
makes the public safety
fight even harder.
Right. Okay.
Let's hold off on the motion
until I can find out if
this hill is worth dying on.
Reverend Peters. [chuckles]
Just in time for the miracle, sir.
Mae's actually considering
some of my advice.
[chuckles softly]
MAE: Thanks, fellas.
- Hey, Dad. You good?
- Hey.
- Yeah.
- What's going on?
Well [sighs]
I have a legal question for you.
Okay.
Say I made a few
calls on behalf of a cop
standing before the
Commission of Peace Officer
- Standards and Training.
- You've done that before.
Mm-hmm. But
what if I did it at the
behest of another officer?
Well, it's not illegal,
but it's just not a good look
for a police off wait.
Which officer is it?
Sarah.
It turns out, one of the
officers who was supposed
to be watching your
whistleblower was Sylvia Min.
Her first partner.
- Oh, I didn't know that.
- Yeah.
Sarah came to me this morning.
Now, if I use my
influence to help Sylvia,
is Sarah in the clear?
Legally.
But it sets a bad precedent.
Sarah doesn't want to
discipline her friend,
so she put you in a bad spot.
What are you gonna do?
I don't know.
MAE: Hmm.
Remember when Sarah
was 15 and she wanted
- to run for student council
- [laughs]
but she was afraid a
sophomore couldn't win?
And I spent weeks helping
with her campaign.
Even drafted Lena into mock debates.
- Mm-hmm.
- It was early in you and Ben's marriage.
You know, I'm convinced
it was that election
that turned you four into a family.
You made those girls fierce.
And Sarah won.
[chuckles]
Do you remember what you said to me?
I said you were raising
little Amazon warriors.
I'm just reminding you who we are.
Are you saying I shouldn't help Sarah?

Blue vans look familiar, don't they?
Yeah.
You'd think they'd have a logo,
you know, so people know
what the charity's doing, who they are.
Fresh-Cue delivers produce to
food deserts in unmarked vans
so people don't feel judged
for taking free food.
Well
You know, what if,
when Malakov said, "Win,"
he was actually trying
to tell us who did it?
Win. Winnie. His ex-wife
who runs this charity.
Maybe your mom's case
was gonna implicate her,
and she took matters into her own hands.
Yeah, but why would
she use her own vans?
You know, she left the company
before it was a Ponzi scheme,
so that motive doesn't hold.
Plus, she's smart and
funny and well-dressed,
- so I'm a fan.
- Oh.
You're a fan? Mm.
How do you know so much about her?
- I read a lot of tabloids.
- You what?
- Uh, I got layers.
- Yeah, like an onion,
but I didn't think tabloids
was one of the layers.
When I was a kid,
I used to stick my face in
those magazines to hide,
'cause it was really tough
when my mom and Ben first got married.
But things got better
when my mom made me help Sarah

It was a big moment for the three of us,
and I've been the glue

That's why you're always
looking after everyone.
[chuckles] You and my late wife Linda
would've gotten along great.
- She did that, too.
- Did what?
Held our family together.
Hmm.

do everything by yourself.
Did she do it all by herself?

no reason to stay in Boston.

I'd put extra aside for them.

any physical harm.
Despite all that, I was still shocked
when I heard he turned our

And did his turning your

maybe have him killed?
I may have hated Lou for what he did,
but I cashed out before
the company went Ponzi,
