MICKEY: Someone asked me
why I wanted to be sheriff.
Truth is, I don't.
I want to be sheriff of Edgewater.
You can't be carrying
around oxy, Brandon.
Skye, you're moving back in with me.
She can't be around this kid.
Are you even drug testing her?
She has been clean for four months now.
He's gonna bring her down with him.
CASSIDY: Travis, where are you?
I heard the news.
You're really going legit?
- Weed's legal.
- I want you to move in with us.
I'd like a chance to be a sister again.
A better sister.
MICKEY: It's you, isn't it?
Punch approached me
about the job, but I did not say yes.
Did you say no?
- What's this?
- It's my letter of resignation.
SKYE: Brandon. I get to his house,
he's on the ground.
And there's blood and a knife,
and he was dead.
MICKEY: You have to do exactly as I say.
You're gonna have to do it on your own.
Just tell them the truth.
- (twigs snap)
- (rapid footsteps)
(panting)
(moaning)
(twig snaps)
What if it's your husband?
What if he followed us?
And miss his stupid softball game?
It's probably just a raccoon.
- Help me!
- (screams)
Please call the police.
They're gonna kill my friends.
Please. They're gonna kill them.
MICKEY: I'm here for you, Skye.
Look, you're not a suspect.
They're just processing evidence.
I know you've had a long night.
Cassidy's at the scene.
We'll find whoever did this.
Boone is gonna ask you some questions.
Just tell them the truth
and you'll be okay.
She's been in that
interrogation room too long.
You're the damn sheriff.
Why don't you go in there?
I can't be involved in a case
where my daughter is a witness.
It's a conflict of interest, Dad.
And for the record,
you've asked me that three times now.
I'm inquisitive. It's my nature.
We never should've brought her here.
She should be in my truck,
headed out of town.
It's a witness statement.
She's gonna be home in an hour.
Boone is a good cop.
Oh, the guy you fired?
Th-That's who you're trusting right now?
I didn't fire him. He resigned.
Oh, well, you accepted, so
Effective in two weeks.
Until then, he's number
two in the department
and the best person to be
leading this investigation.
(scoffs) Yeah. You hope.
(shouts)
You missed.
And that's when you found Brandon?
What happened next?
I screamed, I think.
I ran o I ran over to him.
(sniffles)
The knife was in his back.
I pulled it out.
I-I thought I was helping.
- Hey. Hey.
- There was so much blood.
And h-he he was dead.
Brandon was dead.
- (crying)
- It's okay.
It's okay, honey. You're doing great.
(sniffles)
Your-your dad's right, Skye.
You're doing fine.
- (softly): Yeah.
- Now,
y-you said Brandon was
dead when you found him.
How did you know? You didn't call 911.
- She panicked, Boone.
- It's just a question, Travis.
How did you know Brandon was dead?
Lucky.
I knew because of Lucky.
It's our dog.
When Skye was little,
he got hit by a car.
Skye found him.
SKYE: When someone's dead
you can tell.
At least I can.
BOONE: Now, Skye,
you said you grabbed the knife. Yeah?
What did you do with it?
I dropped it and then I-I ran home.
And I-I told Mom what happened.
She brought me here.
Th-That's it.
My ex-husband used to call decaf
- "the taste of betrayal."
- WES: Thanks, Gina.
Until I get to Costco,
I'm afraid that's all we've got.
Mm.
You know, she's gonna be fine, Wes.
Mickey knows what she's doing.
Hell, I know.
So, what's eating you?
Mm.
When I lived on the mountain,
I was in charge.
Any problems I had
with the neighbors, with the law
I took care of it my way.
Now
Now you live in town
and you feel helpless
because you promised Mickey
you'd live by her rules.
Well
I didn't exactly promise.
Hmm.
Hey, Mick.
She's doing fine. We're almost done.
She told me about the knife.
I-I think she just touched
it because she panicked.
- (stammers)
- Mickey.
I believe her.
So it's not just me.
It's not just you.
Have you eaten?
No.
Huh. 'Cause if there's
anything I picked up
from riding around in a car
with you for two years,
it's when your blood sugar's low.
Really?
'Cause all I learned from
you is a bunch of garbage
about how the early-2000 Oakland Raiders
were better than the 49ers.
Garbage?
This is what's known
as a historical fact.
Sorry, Sheriff.
I know it's a bad time,
but a case came in.
There's someone in your office.
Think you might want
- to talk to him.
- MICKEY: All right.
Give me a minute.
Tish. I'm-I'm so sorry.
I can only imagine what
you're feeling right now.
He had his problems, Mickey, Brandon,
but, but h-he didn't deserve this.
CADEN: Who killed our brother?
- You have any suspects?
- Not yet.
We're just starting our investigation.
The deputies are still at the scene.
We heard Skye got brought in.
I brought her in.
She's the one that found
your brother's body.
Deputy Boone is talking
to her right now.
She's a witness.
Look, as a mom, I promise
we are going to find whoever did this.
I'd like to speak to
Deputy Boone, please.
Of course.
Take a seat. As soon as he's available.
(Ethan crying)
- (door opens)
- MICKEY: Ethan, right?
(grunts)
Deputy Chang said that you
refused to go to the hospital?
Yeah. They're gonna kill my friends.
Uh, let's start at the beginning. Uh
- what are your friends' names?
- Seth and Jay.
We go to Piedmont State.
It's our summer break,
so we were just looking
for something to-to do, so
So you thought you would spend
the summer trimming some bud,
making some money,
sampling the merchandise
until the growers who
hired you refused to pay.
Right? And then,
when you called them on it,
let me guess, they roughed you up.
They put us in chains.
They beat us.
And-and they kept us in pens.
Th-They gave us something
to-to make us work,
some kind of drug.
They said if we tried to escape,
they'd kill us.
All right, now, Ethan.
These men, how many were there?
Three? Three? I-I don't know.
Whatever they gave us
messed with our heads.
Can you tell me their names?
What they look like?
Uh, no names. They
But they had beards. Tattoos.
Half the men in this town.
How did you manage to escape?
Last night they drove to, uh
Barstow to do a deal.
They locked us up
and tied our wrists with
these yellow nylon cords,
but I chewed through my
cords and I got free.
But they dosed us so hard,
I was seeing stuff.
Animals.
Crazy stuff.
And I couldn't free Jay and Seth,
so I just started running.
Ethan, I need you to think, okay?
I need you to try to remember
anything about where you were held.
Anything that could help
me find Jay and Seth.
Santa Claus was there.
Santa Claus?
Yeah, and-and it was snowing.
- It's July.
- (crying)
I-I'm sorry, guys.
Everything's just so hazy.
MICKEY: Last question, okay?
The guys who held you,
when you first met them,
do you remember where that was?
(exhales) Uh, it was a couple weeks ago.
Right when we first got to
Edgewater, at a, at a
some diner with a cow out front?
The Meat Up.
H-Hey, look, look, tho-those guys said
that they were coming back tonight.
And when they see that I'm gone
I'm telling you,
those are some really bad guys.
MICKEY: If we don't find
Ethan's friends before sundown,
we're never gonna find them.
You know what? Call his parents.
They haven't heard from
him in a couple of weeks.
Let them know he's safe.
She did great.
Of course she did great. Come on, kid.
Let's get the hell out of here.
Unfortunately, I can't go.
A case came in. It's very serious.
What could be that serious?
Uh, life-and-death serious.
No worries. Wes and I
will take Skye home.
- Come on, kid.
- You know what?
Hey, get some rest, okay?
I'm gonna see you tonight.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
I just have a few more
questions for Skye.
Oh. Typical cop maneuver.
Dad, stop. What's going on?
We've got a problem.
Cassidy just got back
from the crime scene.
And?
- The knife wasn't there.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Wh-What do you mean,
the knife wasn't there?
We searched Brandon's house, his yard.
- We looked everywhere
- The murder weapon's gone, Mickey.
Is there anything that you
have to say about that?
WES: Are you accusing my granddaughter?
- Is that what's going on here?
- BOONE: No one
is accusing anyone of anything.
I am just asking Skye a question.
Uh, he's just doing his job.
That's what he's doing.
Okay? Skye, honey,
do you remember where
you dropped the knife?
Yeah, on the floor, next to Brandon.
- I already told him
- TRAVIS: Okay, hold on, hold on.
You know what? Enough of this.
Wes is right.
Charge Skye, or we're walking
out of here right now.
Travis, can I talk to you?
Boone?
Skye is just a witness.
If she wants to leave,
we can't stop her.
No, I-I don't want to leave.
I-I want to answer their questions
- and help them find who killed Brandon.
- Hey, listen to me.
- Skye, listen
- No! I want to help them find this guy.
Then that's what you should do.
- Mickey.
- On one condition.
She has been going nonstop,
so before you ask her
any more questions,
she needs a break.
Dad, let's take her to my office.
(keypad beeping)
(lock buzzes, latch clicks)
Should've got in the damn
truck like I had wanted.
(sighs) Thanks, Dad.
- What are you doing?
- What am I doing?
What are you doing? Our daughter
- Is a witness, not a suspect.
- Yet.
Skye didn't kill Brandon.
This is Skye we're talking
about. We know her.
Refusing to answer questions
is only gonna make her look guilty.
That is a cop talking.
Yeah, it is.
- I'm calling my sister.
- Uh-uh.
I don't want Miranda or anybody
in your family involved.
She has the best defense lawyer
in the state on speed dial, Mick.
Which isn't gonna look
incriminating at all,
for Skye, who is a witness,
to hire a defense lawyer.
I see it all time. Witnesses lawyer up,
and then I'm wondering,
what are they hiding?
Besides, she's got a lawyer.
She's got you.
I am her father, Mickey.
Yes, I am a lawyer.
I am also her dad, and I have
to keep those things separate.
So, will you please do Skye a favor?
Will you please stop
thinking like the sheriff
and start thinking like her mom?
- I'm calling my sister.
- (door opens)

SKYE: I dropped the knife, I know I did.
I-I don't know what could
have happened to it.
Now, you didn't tell them
anything about Brandon
stealing the money
from my hives, did you?
No, it-it never, it never came up.
Good. Good girl.
My advice? Never trust a cop.
Never tell them anything.
But, Grandpa,
I grew up with these people.
Cassidy, Sheriff Fred when he was alive,
Boone these last few years.
I want to help.
Listen to me.
These people are your mom's friends.
They're not yours.
If they decide that you are guilty,
then not even your
mom can help you out.
TRAVIS: Mickey's always hated my family.
And I get it. Sometimes I hate 'em, too.
CASSIDY: I'm sorry, Travis.
I know this is really hard for you.
Take a team up to where Ethan was found.
It's a big area and he'd
been running all night,
but maybe we'll get lucky.
Cassidy and I are gonna
start at The Meat Up.
If that's where they
met their abductors,
maybe somebody saw them?
- Okay.
- (Boone speaks indistinctly)
Hey, Mick?
Hey.
Just so you know, this is not
how I wanted it to go with Skye.
I know.
I-I know you're in a tough spot.
Just, please,
don't talk to Skye without
me or Travis there.
Hey.
Are you sure you're up
for this abduction case?
I'm gonna bring those kids home.
MICKEY: We know the
kidnappers kept them drugged.
Scopolamine.
Maybe that's what they dosed them with.
It's called the Devil's Breath,
a zombie drug.
You-you slip it in someone's drink,
and then they drain their ATM,
hand you the cash,
and can't even remember
anything about it.
He's mad at me.
Travis.
I think it's because I was the one
who reported the knife missing.
(sighs)
Cassidy, I'm gonna say this one time.
You need to be 100% focused
on finding Jay and Seth right now.
- I'm sorry, you're right.
- And you can't be
talking to a witness's
father about the case,
even if you two are
whatever it is you and Travis are in.
Look, I know that this
must be weird for you.
He's your ex-husband and you're my boss.
But does it have to be weird?
Between us?
Scopolamine.
I'm thinking that's what they
dosed them with, for sure.
They would've been here
a couple weeks ago.
AMBER: I'm sorry, Mickey.
I don't remember.
But we get lots of trimmigrants,
so maybe they were here.
That'll be $3.50 for the coffee.
MICKEY: Thanks, Amber.
Mm-hmm.
Sorry. Never seen 'em.
The growers who hired them
we think they keep them drugged.
You guys know anybody who
moves that kind of stuff?
- Hi, Mickey.
- We don't talk to cops.
I know.
Is that a ring?
Yes.
Oh, wow.
Oh, it's gorgeous.
JOSIE: Seriously, Mickey.
Okay? We're not gonna get involved.
Where'd you ask her?
Give me the details.
- Shelley Point.
- At sunset.
How romantic is that?
Oh, that's amazing.
I'm so happy for you guys.
So, these missing boys,
they're not experienced
trimmers like you guys.
They got in over their heads, you know?
They're in danger.
You know all the growers around here.
You know anybody that's drugging people?
Come on, guys. Help me out.
Okay, fine.
Word is, there are some
scary new dudes in town.
Very weird vibes.
- Yeah, okay. Names?
- No.
No, no, no. No names.
All right. What about the drugs?
I'm thinking scopolamine?
You know anybody pushing that stuff?
- Sorry, Mickey, we really can't.
- Purdy.
Um, William Purdy.
He has a cabin off Dansby Creek.
Invite her to the wedding,
why don't you?

I called in backup.
SKYE: You think I did it, don't you?
BOONE: No, I-I don't
think you did it, Skye.
I'm just trying to get to the truth.
For Brandon.
For his family.
I can tell you really cared about him.

- Wait. Wait, wait, wait. No.
Look, I'm not a lawyer,

You are helping her, Wes,

Isn't that what they say?
90% of parenting is just being there.
Oh, you mean, like I wasn't for Mickey?
No, that's not what I meant, but fine.
What you weren't for Mickey.
Look, Mickey is Skye's mom,

But you're here for her.
And don't think Mickey

Now watch. Here comes Purdy.
