The Bombing of Pan Am 103 (2025) s01e02 Episode Script
Episode 2
This programme contains some strong language
and scenes which some viewers may find upsetting
I think we're delayed.
- Sorry, darling.
- No, we'll be together before you know it.
- Thank you, Mr Doyle. Have a restful flight.
- Thanks.
You sure they said, "Explosion"?
They said it. I'm just
not sure they meant it.
- Lockerbie. Where is that?
- It's a small town down the A74.
About an hour away.
Hey, lad, you can't be here!
I can't leave. It's my home!
Is everything OK?
Look, have you seen the news?
We just want to know
what's happened to our son.
It's Tim. It's Tim Burman.
We don't think that anyone
has come through this.
The fall was 30,000 feet.
We estimate there's 250
passengers still out there.
The evidence is in Scotland,
but 190 victims are American.
If this was an attack against US
citizens, it would be unprecedented.
Do the Scots have the black box?
We need to piece together the audio
of the plane's last few minutes.
I need to find out if this was
an accident or if it was a bomb.
That loud, thin noise is
the final recorded cockpit sound.
Pilot never saw it coming.
Blackening, scorching
What are you thinking?
I think someone bombed
this plane out the sky.
This was an act of war
..and now we have to find out
who we're fighting.
NEWS REPORTER:
On both sides of the Atlantic,
people are still coming
to terms with the scale
of the Lockerbie air crash.
But amid the grief,
there is much debate in America
over a specific warning
of terrorist action
against Pan Am flights from Europe.
That warning was circulated to
American embassies and airlines.
And if Pan Am employees are also
given sufficiently strong warning
for them to change
their own flight plans,
why weren't the passengers told?
Nazir Jaafar?
Yes?
Do you have anything to say
about your son's involvement
in the bombing of Pan Am 103?
No, no. I'm sorry. No.
- You're sorry about what he did?
- No, that's not what I meant.
You support his actions, then?
No! Please, just go.
No problem. I'll go ask your wife.
Do not speak to her!
I'm Agent Reid.
That man is threatening my family.
- Excuse me?
- He's going to my house. My wife is grieving.
Sir, I'm Agent Phil Reid from the FBI.
"FBI"?
I need to talk to you
about your son Khaled.
Er OK.
OK, can we have some quiet
here, please? Thank you.
First of all, I want to extend my thanks
to the courageous men and women
who have worked around the clock,
over Christmas and New Year,
in this, the biggest
crime scene in history.
So far, we have recovered 252 bodies.
18 remain unaccounted for.
But then we're dealing with
an 850-square-mile search area.
Here to explain the
air accident team's findings
is Mick Charles of the AAIB.
CLEARS THROA
Recently, two pieces of damaged metal
have been discovered in the
countryside surrounding Lockerbie -
both blast-damaged,
both bearing explosive residue
and both, we believe, from
the inside of a luggage pallet.
This is an intact luggage pallet,
where passenger baggage is held.
On a commercial flight, such as PA103,
there are usually about 26 of them.
The discovery of these pallet parts
..suggests strongly
- that a bomb
- GASPS AND CLAMOUR
..was inside one of them
and, therefore, most likely
inside a piece of luggage.
Does this mean the bomber
was a passenger?
That's the current
focus of enquiries, yes.
It's been reported that,
on December 5th,
an anonymous call to the
US Embassy in Helsinki
warned that a bomb would
be put on a Pan Am flight.
Why weren't the public warned?
My current understanding
is that there are a number
of these kind of warnings,
but it's not always clear
which ones to take seriously.
Could the bomb have been
in Khaled Jaafar's luggage?
Not prepared to talk about
individual passengers at the moment.
But you are aware that the FBI has
just questioned Jaafar's father?
I'm sure the FBI will be interviewing
a great many of the victims' families.
Well, aren't you leading
the investigation, Mr Orr?
Yes, I am leading this investigation
..but the FBI have specialisms
in limited areas
that we are very grateful for.
Specialisms that you don't have?
21 countries have lost citizens
in this attack
..so, inevitably, it will
require an international effort.
In fact, very soon,
we will be having
our first international meeting,
with investigators from the FBI
and a host of other countries
..where we will be sharing
information and making progress.
We will have further updates for
you then, but that's all for now.
Thank you.
REPORTERS SHOU
PHONES RING
Well-handled in there, DCS Orr.
The Jaafar business catch you off-guard?
Door.
Did you know the FBI were
questioning Jaafar's family?
Did you?
No.
No, I was as surprised as you.
Any idea why they'd be taking
a closer look at him?
Well, the press picked up on him
because he's Middle Eastern.
Please tell me that's
not enough for the FBI.
SCOFFS: No. One would hope not.
What have you got, then? Anything?
I have the bare minimum.
20 years of age, Lebanese-born,
American Muslim.
Boarded connecting Flight 103A
from Frankfurt to Heathrow.
If the FBI are looking into him,
then they're not sharing something.
So, you don't trust the FBI,
yet you keep an
FBI explosives expert here
instead of my
counter-terror specialists?
Tom Thurman's good. He does his job.
Look, DCS Orr, you and your team
are doing an incredible work
gathering all this evidence,
but what this case needs
is intelligence,
and that's what we receive in London.
All right, and then so
..what are you hearing? Any links?
Islamic Jihad?
Palestinian ANO? What?
Ah, so you know exactly as much
as I do, which is nothing.
Look, you must admit,
my team has the expertise here.
We can help. Let us take
over the Jaafar enquiries.
We're more used to
talking to the CIA and FBI.
- "Take over"?
- Hmm.
Scottish soil, Scottish evidence,
Scottish procedure.
And I don't need
intelligence to tell me that.
Ladies, smashing job you're
doing here in the typing pool.
Look lively.
I need everything
you've got on passenger Jaafar.
Khaled Jaafar, seat 53K.
Pan Am passenger manifest
said he'd two hold bags.
- Any sign of them?
- No.
As far as I recall,
there's only one item currently
linked to him in Holmes.
This is it. His driver's license.
It was found with his body.
13:05 on the 22nd December.
Sector C.
We need to figure out
where his bags are.
Thing is the thing - FBI, Anti Terror,
they can have all the
intelligence they want,
but nothing beats fucking evidence.
I'll get this shared with the team.
Good recall, McCusker.
- So you're Glasgow-based, aren't ye?
- Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, my driver's exhausted, so
..might have to come to you
now and again for a lift. That OK?
- Course. Any time.
- Good.
"Course. Any time."
PHONE RINGS
This is Dick Marquise.
Mr Marquise.
Mr Orr.
Hi, how are you?
Why wasn't I informed
that the FBI had interviewed
Khaled Jaafar's parents?
Well, I mean, my agents
visited a number of families.
That's standard protocol.
I take it wasn't random that
they were prioritised for a visit.
No, not entirely.
We just found out that
he visited Lebanon recently.
And you didn't think that
was worth sharing with us?
Look, I'm sorry,
but it really just came in.
We've got a lot of
moving pieces here, so
What did you get from
the visit to the family?
Nothing.
Nothing, unfortunately.
So, all you have on him is that
he recently visited Lebanon?
For now, yeah.
Well, when you get more
..you keep me informed
- ..OK?
- Of course.
- Of course. And, Mr Orr, I'm so
- CALL DISCONNECTS
Hello?
Sorry, got caught up
on the phone with Orr.
He's not happy with us.
Why not?
Well, he thinks we're
holding back intel on Jaafar.
Well, he's on the money, then.
That's not exactly the level of
investigation the Scots are used to.
We can't risk leaks.
So what is the new
intelligence on Jaafar?
Jaafar visited the
Beqaa Valley in Lebanon.
It's not much of a tourist destination.
No, but it's full of
terrorist training camps.
You think Hezbollah recruited him?
Well, I didn't
..until one of my analysts found this.
CIA surveillance shot of a low-level
terrorist in Germany last year,
part of a Hezbollah feeder cell.
We didn't have a name for him,
but now we think it might be Jaafar.
I could see that.
Plus, we think Jaafar's
mother is a first cousin
of Hafez al-Assad - very
pro-Palestinian Syrian President.
And also Jaafar was
observed in passport control
by a Pakistani passenger -
a Yasmin Siddique.
We just spoke with her. She reported
that he was acting nervously.
- She'd testify to that?
- Yeah. Yeah, I think she would.
OK. What are your next steps?
Reid and Marshman are going
to interview the father again,
but this time in DC.
You think he knows more than he's said?
Well, fathers often do.
And we don't know the kid
knew a bomb was in his bag
But if you were recruiting
for America's enemies?
It's perfect.
US passport holder,
no special security alerts,
bringing luggage home for the holidays.
And what can we feed up
to the White House?
Headlines only. No specifics yet.
Walk with me. There's
something I want to discuss.
How long you been at the bureau,
Dick? It's your whole career, right?
Correct. Same as my old man.
Second generation.
He must be proud.
He's satisfied with my choices.
This investigation, it's tricky.
See, every country that lost citizens
are all going to want their own justice,
but we have to face facts -
this was an attack on America.
A Pan Am plane with
190 Americans on board.
- What else could it be?
- We need to be out front, leading this thing.
- I don't doubt the Scots' commitment, but
- I hear you.
So, that in mind,
I want you to lead a US Task Force.
Field Offices. DOJ.
- If you're up for it.
- Of course, yes.
You'll be representing us
at the first international meeting
in Scotland.
- Well, thanks for the faith, Neil.
- We've got to move fast,
because if you were a Hezbollah cell
that just downed an American 747
Why would you stop at just one?
Love you.
You think these are OK?
They're fine. They're beautiful.
What's that?
Some paperwork that
I thought might be useful.
Like what?
Nothing, really. It's fine.
Roy, what's in there?
It's Tim's dental records.
I had the office fax them over.
Now, this shoe is one of 14,000 items
brought into this warehouse so far.
Items we were never supposed to see.
I believe the intention was for the
bomb to detonate over the Atlantic,
where everything would
have been lost forever.
But headwinds caused them to
route the plane towards Glasgow,
meaning the bomb went
off over Lockerbie,
making it a treasure trove of evidence.
Now, each item will
have its own unique ID
and your job will be
to assess it for bomb damage.
Anything with pitting,
blackening, warping, or burning
will be prioritised for
explosive residue testing at RARDE.
I'm not sure everybody knows "RARDE".
"Royal Armament Research and
Development Establishment," in Kent.
Allen Feraday's IRA experience there
will give you forensic expertise,
which is half of what any good
bomb scene response team needs.
What's the other half?
Eyeballs.
Now, let's get back to the shoe.
Now, have a good look at it now.
Should we set that aside for Feraday?
Yes.
Good.
I agree.
No pitting.
No foreign material.
But there are signs of
burn damage on the sole.
Now, was this shoe in
the bomber's suitcase?
Probably not.
But in a bag close by?
Potentially.
How you categorise a child's shoe
may seem like a small decision
..but I'm here to tell you that the
choices you make in this warehouse
..will be the most crucial
of your whole careers.
You all right?
Yeah, yeah. All good.
Excuse me, can I help?
This is a restricted area.
Yeah, they said if I waited here,
Mr Orr might be able to see me.
What is it you want him for?
I came to bring Mikey home.
He's married to my wife's sister.
He's got a baby back home.
19 months.
I'm sorry to hear that.
I got a call saying
he's been identified,
that he's in the ice rink, but I'm
I'm still waiting to see him.
Unfortunately, a delay's not unusual.
His wife won't believe
he's dead until I see him myself.
I understand. However, we
We don't advise that.
What about his belongings?
Would there be any info on that?
Come on. Follow me.
Sandy, give us a wee second here.
Right, have a seat, pal.
OK, what's Mikey's full name.
It's Michael Joseph Doyle.
- OK. D-O-Y-L-E?
- Yeah.
OK. So
..so far, it is just his body.
He's confirmed as not of interest.
Sorry. That just means
to the enquiry.
I get it. It's OK.
I can see your request to view him here.
It looks like he's going
to be released imminently.
Give us the name of your hotel,
and I'll be touch
when I've got some news.
Thank you.
I appreciate it.
How can they not say
if he's been found yet?
I don't know.
It said in the paper
some people may never be found.
It's freezing. Come on,
let's get you back in the car.
What if we don't find him, Roy?
What if we don't get him back?
Attention!
As the first victims of
the doomed jumbo jet
began their journey
home to America tonight,
the town of Lockerbie
turned out to grieve.
Standing in the high street of the town,
Pan Am stewardesses struggling
with their emotions.
The people of America and
Scotland united in grief.
President George Bush has called an
emergency meeting with leaders of
- Hiya, love.
- Hiya, darlin'.
Right
..where are the girls?
Was going to see if they fancied
a game on the Spectrum.
It's after ten, Ed.
Yeah, course.
Sorry.
Why's my old jacket out?
It's for the boy that lost his family.
Steven Flannigan.
I heard they were doing a ceremony
for all the unfound victims.
I just
I thought
He won't have anything
to wear to that, will he?
- It's all gone.
- That's very thoughtful. Thank you.
- You're meant to be in bed, wee girl.
- I heard Dad's car.
Oh, I'm sorry, have I woken you up?
That's OK. Mum says you're
working hard cos of the big crash.
It's OK, isn't it, though?
It's never going to happen again.
Yeah. Listen, I don't want
you worrying about all that.
You get back up to bed,
and I'll come tuck you in.
Go on. Off you go!
Love you, sweetheart.
I don't think you should
be saying that to her.
Saying what?
Until we catch who's responsible,
who's to say it won't happen again?
Yeah, I realise that, Ed.
I was a police officer too, remember?
- Mum!
- I'm not daft.
- But she's a child. - June
- Mum!
Coming.
OK.
Thanks for coming in, Mr Jaafar.
We just wanted to discuss
some new information that we have.
New New information?
Yeah, well, the fact is,
we fear your son may have
been involved in this mess.
I was a lawyer in Lebanon
before we moved here.
- I'm not a fool.
- We know you're not a fool, sir.
Yeah, neither was my son.
Khaled was a good student.
He was studying to become an architect.
He had no interest in politics.
Khaled recently fell in love, yes?
Who told you that?
You didn't approve.
Well
..she was not right for him.
He needed to complete his
studies here, in America.
She wanted to take him away.
And he didn't have the money to marry.
So, he needed more money in order
to make his own choice of wife?
My son would never hurt anyone,
let alone kill 270 people.
Mr Jaafar
..this man is Hassan el-Salheli.
We suspect he's got
possible links to Hezbollah.
We just discovered that
Khaled stayed with him in Germany.
Yeah, I don't know him.
I don't know anything about that.
He even threw him a departure party.
Dortmund Station.
21st of December.
To see Khaled off to Frankfurt Airport,
like he was going to war.
A hero's send-off.
Well, perhaps he was being kind.
Look, we are a generous culture.
Before Germany,
Khaled visited the Beqaa Valley.
Some of your relatives
involved in drug smuggling there?
SCOFFS: No.
Hezbollah runs the valley.
Show me who doesn't have links
to someone connected
to drug smuggling there.
Doesn't mean they're involved.
Is it possible that,
when back in the Valley,
Khaled was coerced -
for money, or love -
to transporting something on a plane?
Hezbollah preying on an innocent
American youth in their territory -
is that not plausible?
No.
We don't think your son
was a terrorist, Mr Jaafar.
You don't?
I think he thought
what he had in his bag
..was drugs, at worst
..and he was tricked
into carrying a bomb.
"Tricked"?
MUSIC BLARES
Has anything come in regarding Jaafar?
No. Nothing yet.
I mean, the thing is
..most of the items
found out on the fields
..they're only sorted into
evidential and non-evidential, so
..it's often not clear
what belongs to who.
We've got a whole
warehouse full of items
that haven't been linked to anyone.
- And your point being?
- My point being,
maybe we've got Jaafar's bags
and we just don't know it yet.
METALLIC CLANGING, BEEPING
So, what have we got here, Tam?
Well, these are the remains of
the most damaged luggage pallets
from Pan Am 103,
the ones most likely
to have held the bomb.
Now, once they're all put back together,
it'll look something like this
..but with a blast hole
appearing in one.
Well
..that's the idea, anyways.
What's this telling us?
We already know the bomb
was in the luggage hold.
Well, yes, we do,
but baggage was loaded at different
airports at different times
and in different luggage containers.
If we figure out which
luggage container held the bomb,
you can figure out which
airport it was loaded at.
Oh, hello.
Sorry, I'm not sure who to ask.
I've got something
you might want to see.
There's a name on the inside.
I was wondering if you could get it
to the family of whoever owned it.
I'm sure it would mean a lot to them.
The thing is, if it came from the plane,
first, it'll need to be assessed
to make sure it isn't
of evidential value.
- You mean it could be a clue?
- Yes.
We'll need to process it.
But if it's not evidence,
it'll go back to the family, won't it?
Anything that isn't evidence
is being put to the side.
We just don't have the manpower
to process it at the moment.
Come on. For one wee Bible?
If we did it for one,
we'd have to do it for all.
You're saying that all that stuff,
all those bags and clothes,
are just being left somewhere?
It's just
..you know, DCS Orr says
we have to prioritise.
Well, you tell DCS Orr
..that he needs to have a think
about those"priorities".
That's him.
That's Mikey.
OK.
Thank you.
- Come on. I'll give you a lift back.
- OK.
Come in.
Oh, thanks very much.
Hello.
Some clean uniforms there
for the boys out in the fields.
Could I have a word?
Moira
..WPC Aitken informs me
that you've got an issue
with the fact that belongings
haven't being returned
to the families as yet.
We all do.
It's a sin, so it is.
Think how badly people
need those things,
how much they could help them.
I agree.
Good.
The problem is, there's so much of it.
And a lot of it's not fit for return.
It's not just covered in mud,
it's covered in a lot worse besides.
Lauren told me that you don't have
enough manpower to do the clean-up.
No. To be honest, we don't
..which is why I was wondering
if you and your volunteers
might step in.
Us?
I mean, it's tough work,
and it could go on for weeks, but
If you don't feel you're able to
Of course we feel able.
We're used to tough work.
We're not the ones sitting behind
a desk all day, are we, Moira?
No, we're not.
You just tell us when we start.
We'll be there.
KNOCK AT DOOR
Mrs Harley?
Yes.
I'm DS McCusker.
I've brought a few bits here for Steven.
Oh. Oh, that's
That's lovely, come on in.
Did you have a whip round
down at the station for him?
My wife's idea.
Just a few bits and pieces
I'm not using.
That's really kind of you both.
- Have a seat.
- No, no. I I can't stay long.
How is he?
His brother's up from Blackpool,
so that's helping a wee bit, but
OK, yeah. Is he about?
Oh, yeah, of course..
Steven, you've got a visitor.
CLEARS THROA
All right, pal. How's it going?
Fine, aye.
I've brought you some things
I thought you could use.
Charity case, am I?
No. No, no. I.., I just
I wasn't sure you had a suit jacket
..for the ceremony.
I brought you some books.
Some old comics.
It's a daft idea.
I'll take this all back.
No, it's
It's all right.
Sorry, Ed, it's
It's nice.
Thanks.
They're really flying you Pan Am
to Scotland?
It'll be fine.
I just keep thinking about
those college kids on board.
That could have been Ian
coming home from a semester abroad.
Yes. I know.
And I read there were
16 children under ten on board.
Pat!
What?
I have to solve this.
And to do that, I have to be rational.
I can't be rational
if I'm thinking about
..the other side of things.
It seems pretty rational
to think of it, if you ask me.
I just don't think
you'll be able to avoid it,
- being over there, you know?
- OK.
- Who're you calling?
- Pizza place.
I'm going to go ask
the boys what they want.
DOOR OPENS
Good news.
They found one of Jafaar's bags
last night at Dexstar.
Definitely his?
It was found on Minsca Farm,
27th of December,
with flight coupons inside in his name.
Any bomb damage?
None.
What about the second bag?
No sign yet.
All right.
I want you to go to Dexstar,
and I want you to go through
all of the luggage personally,
and you find that second bag.
Er What about Holmes?
This takes priority.
CAMERA CLICKS
Morning, boss.
They ready for us?
More than ready. The boffins
are all excited about something.
Moonlighting as a taxi driver, McCusker?
I didn't know times were so tough, son.
Practise that as you were driving up?
It's very good, Harry.
Aye. Hope he left you a good tip.
We found this as we were reconstructing
the most heavily-damaged luggage pallet.
- What is it?
- We'll have to get RARDE to look at it,
but it looks electronic to us.
And that's the pallet it came from?
Yes. We believe this to be
the epicentre of the explosion,
where the bomb was held -
pallet AVE 4041.
Do we know what luggage
was contained in this pallet?
This is one of
the small number of pallets
that contained luggage from
both Heathrow and Frankfurt.
Jaafar boarded at Frankfurt.
Do we know Jaafar's luggage
was in this pallet?
Well, the thing is, at this time,
we've got an incomplete picture
of the Frankfurt baggage.
- Why?
- The Germans are dragging their feet
about the Frankfurt luggage list.
I've asked them for it several times.
I even said, "Please."
Well, the Germans are arriving soon.
Let's see what they've
got to say for themselves.
These are items that have
been deemed ready for clean-up
before return to the families.
Everything must be signed
in and out of this room.
Nothing enters or leaves
without paperwork, OK?
You take an item from here
and clean it up, best you can,
without damaging it.
Now, some items will just need
a little wiping down while others
..will require more work.
Right. Let's get on with it.
Here we are here.
This is what we've got on Khalid Jaafar.
The bag they've identified
and his licence.
We've got a copy of this at Holmes.
You'd better start digging.
Argh!
Roy
..why don't you come inside?
It's getting late.
Just a few more
..then I'll be in.
Argh!
Roy
You go inside.
I'll speak to them.
REPORTER: - As families around
the globe continue to demand answers,
investigators from several countries
will join air accident experts and
Scottish detectives in Lockerbie
for the first international conference
to discuss the preliminary finding
around the bombing of Pan Am 103.
- Dick.
- Tom.
- How are you?
- Good. Good to see you again.
This is DCS Orr.
Great to meet you, finally.
It's better to do this sort
of thing in person, right?
Well, I hope so.
Please.
Oh, wow. I wasn't expecting
an elementary school.
Oh, don't you worry.
The kids are all safely tucked away
in another building.
This is our incident centre.
Yes, of course.
How was your flight?
Good. Good.
No issues.
You're making great progress here, Tom.
- Sir.
- That'll be all for now, Tom. Thank you.
So
..Khalid Jaafar.
How was the interview with his father?
Good.
Nothing new came of it, unfortunately.
Really, just an informal chat.
I'm sure it wasn't informal for him.
No. No. Probably not.
I've heard a lot about
your evidence collection, Mr Orr.
It's amazing work.
800-square-mile crime scene, was it?
Right.
Well
..you know, we'd really
love to take a look
at anything you have uncovered so far.
- CLEARS THROA
- You You want to see our evidence,
while you refuse to share your intel.
How does that work?
I I We've shared everything
that we're able to at this point.
You have intel
you're not sharing with us.
You wouldn't have gone to the father
for a second interview otherwise.
Am I right?
Yes.
Yes, there are details
that I'm not authorised
to share at the international meeting.
I can give headlines, but there's
just nothing firm enough yet.
Plus, we can't risk anything
getting out to the press,
make life worse for Jaafar's
family than it already is.
Hmm, I think the genie's
already out of the bottle,
with regard to that one.
I'm not asking you to share
everything with everyone.
Just with me
..and a few select members of my team.
In exchange
..we get access to your evidence?
You show me yours, I'll show you mine.
INDISTINCT CHATTER
Did Marquise have intel on Jaafar?
Mm-hm.
A lot, and he seemed very confident
he's our guy.
You think he's sharing
everything he has?
No chance.
Gentlemen, welcome, all, to Lockerbie
and the first international meeting.
I'd like to give
a hearty Scottish welcome
to Dick Marquise of the FBI,
Hans Sonntag and Director Klink,
German investigators from the BKA.
And from RARDE
Allen Feraday.
While the investigation's
in the early stages,
we've began to focus on
one potential suspect -
Khalid Jaafar, a young
American-Lebanese passenger
who, we have been informed,
was involved in some suspicious
activities in the Middle East.
We've recovered one of his bags,
but we know that he checked in two,
so the current theory
is that the second bag
may have contained the bomb.
AAIB believe that they've found
the site of the explosion.
And this has been verified the
findings of RARDE. Is that correct?
We examined the metal of the pallet
and found residue consistent
with explosive contact with an IED.
So, we can now confirm that this is
the pallet that contained the bomb?
- Yeah.
- So, what does this tell us?
The pallets mainly contained
luggage solely from Heathrow.
This pallet also contained luggage
from a connecting Frankfurt flight.
But the pallet contained
lots of luggage.
You can't know the bomb
got through at Frankfurt.
Exactly.
And that's why we have requested the
luggage list from Frankfurt Airport.
Several times.
But you have the Pan Am manifests
for both flights, correct?
That should tell you all you
need to know about the luggage.
With all due respect, no, it doesn't.
The Pan Am luggage list lacks detail.
The Frankfurt list
would show the exact origin
of every bag loaded
at Frankfurt Airport.
Unfortunately, we're not
in possession of the luggage list.
Can I ask, why not?
Mr Sonntag?
CLEARS THROA
The airport have told
us it is electronic
and erases itself after seven days.
But that would give you
a week to print it.
We don't have it.
I accept this is unfortunate.
"Unfortunate"?
Is there anything solid on this Jaafar?
Any actual evidence
linking him to the bombing?
Not yet, but then we
haven't found the second bag.
So, you have nothing?
No.
But then, if the bag held the bomb
..there wouldn't be
much to find, would there?
How can you lose a luggage list?
Well, if it proves
that Frankfurt Airport
is how the bomb got into the system,
it's not going to be
their top priority, is it?
- That's a wee bit cynical, boss, no?
- Mm-hm.
McCusker.
- Dick Marquise, FBI.
- Hi.
McCusker's looking to find
anything linking to Jaafar.
We spoke on the phone,
a few days after the bombing.
Oh, sorry. Bit of a blur,
those first few days.
Any joy?
So, that's the bag found on
Minsca Farm on the 27th of December.
Anything useful inside?
ID or anything?
Just the flight coupons.
His driver's license was
located not far from his body,
but there's nothing else suggesting
he was involved in the attack.
You still haven't found the second bag?
Nothing yet, but there's
still a lot to go through.
If it's there at all.
Do you have any extra gloves?
- For you?
- Yeah.
As long as that's OK with you, DCS Orr.
Aye, sure.
We'll leave you here.
We need to get back.
Of course.
- Sure you don't mind?
- No, no. I'll take all the help I can get.
Great.
See you after.
Got men's clothing here.
What's this?
It's just a doctor's case.
What?
CLEARS THROA
I got something.
Jaafar's from Michigan.
What colour's the jacket on the license?
Blue, I think.
That's his jacket.
Yeah, it is.
- It's got to be his bag.
- And it's still in one piece.
Jaafar's not the bomber.
He's just a passenger.
And another victim.
I owe you an apology, DCS Orr.
We really thought this intel
on Jaafar was solid.
Well, he's ruled out, so
..it's a step forward.
I'm not sure how much of a
comfort that's going to be
to Jaafar's family.
What next for your team?
We move on. Keep searching.
I'll be in touch with whatever comes in.
Yeah.
So will I.
Safe travel.
I gave you life once and I'm
I'm only sorry
I can't give you life again.
Do you think there'll be
photographers at the ceremony?
Eh?
I don't want them to take my photo.
They're not going to take a photo
of that ugly mug, now are they?
Shut up!
I just don't want to be
in the paper again.
Well, if they are there,
I won't let them take your photo.
- All right?
- All right.
Come here.
Come here!
You look good.
We gather here today
to commemorate the lives
of those who, sadly,
have not been found.
Whilst we may not have them with us,
we hold them tightly in our hearts,
today and every day.
These 17 souls will forever
be part of our lives.
May this last farewell express
the depth of our love for them.
May it ease, a little, our sense of loss
and strengthen our hope.
If the word "Lockerbie"
will be associated
with this terrible tragedy,
perhaps it'll also be spoken of,
in the future, with admiration,
through the example of its people.
We pray.
Pray for all who have lost someone.
Amen.
BAGPIPES PLAY
Mr McCusker?
Yeah.
David, how are you doing? You OK?
I just wanted to say thanks again -
for the jacket and everything.
It's It's no problem at all.
I'm hoping he can come live
with me in Blackpool soon,
but knowing he's got folk here, it
It means a lot.
I think he's got the
whole town looking after him.
Thanks again, Ed.
We have to investigate every
possibility, every passenger,
but I acknowledge that this
was difficult for your family
and all we can do is apologise.
We're sorry if we've caused
any additional pain,
discomfort.
"If"?
You will move on to the next suspect.
But there's no moving on for us.
The newspaper articles, the lies
..they will never go away.
- Yes?
- Allen Feraday.
I've examined the shards
found at Longtown.
- And?
- Well, it's definitely something electronic
and extensively bomb-damaged.
The fact it came from inside the
pallet, it's blasting outwards
It was either part of
the bomb or next to it.
So, let me get this straight.
You think it could be part of the bomb?
I do.
Do you have an appointment, sir?
No appointment, but I know
who put the bomb on Pan Am 103.
and scenes which some viewers may find upsetting
I think we're delayed.
- Sorry, darling.
- No, we'll be together before you know it.
- Thank you, Mr Doyle. Have a restful flight.
- Thanks.
You sure they said, "Explosion"?
They said it. I'm just
not sure they meant it.
- Lockerbie. Where is that?
- It's a small town down the A74.
About an hour away.
Hey, lad, you can't be here!
I can't leave. It's my home!
Is everything OK?
Look, have you seen the news?
We just want to know
what's happened to our son.
It's Tim. It's Tim Burman.
We don't think that anyone
has come through this.
The fall was 30,000 feet.
We estimate there's 250
passengers still out there.
The evidence is in Scotland,
but 190 victims are American.
If this was an attack against US
citizens, it would be unprecedented.
Do the Scots have the black box?
We need to piece together the audio
of the plane's last few minutes.
I need to find out if this was
an accident or if it was a bomb.
That loud, thin noise is
the final recorded cockpit sound.
Pilot never saw it coming.
Blackening, scorching
What are you thinking?
I think someone bombed
this plane out the sky.
This was an act of war
..and now we have to find out
who we're fighting.
NEWS REPORTER:
On both sides of the Atlantic,
people are still coming
to terms with the scale
of the Lockerbie air crash.
But amid the grief,
there is much debate in America
over a specific warning
of terrorist action
against Pan Am flights from Europe.
That warning was circulated to
American embassies and airlines.
And if Pan Am employees are also
given sufficiently strong warning
for them to change
their own flight plans,
why weren't the passengers told?
Nazir Jaafar?
Yes?
Do you have anything to say
about your son's involvement
in the bombing of Pan Am 103?
No, no. I'm sorry. No.
- You're sorry about what he did?
- No, that's not what I meant.
You support his actions, then?
No! Please, just go.
No problem. I'll go ask your wife.
Do not speak to her!
I'm Agent Reid.
That man is threatening my family.
- Excuse me?
- He's going to my house. My wife is grieving.
Sir, I'm Agent Phil Reid from the FBI.
"FBI"?
I need to talk to you
about your son Khaled.
Er OK.
OK, can we have some quiet
here, please? Thank you.
First of all, I want to extend my thanks
to the courageous men and women
who have worked around the clock,
over Christmas and New Year,
in this, the biggest
crime scene in history.
So far, we have recovered 252 bodies.
18 remain unaccounted for.
But then we're dealing with
an 850-square-mile search area.
Here to explain the
air accident team's findings
is Mick Charles of the AAIB.
CLEARS THROA
Recently, two pieces of damaged metal
have been discovered in the
countryside surrounding Lockerbie -
both blast-damaged,
both bearing explosive residue
and both, we believe, from
the inside of a luggage pallet.
This is an intact luggage pallet,
where passenger baggage is held.
On a commercial flight, such as PA103,
there are usually about 26 of them.
The discovery of these pallet parts
..suggests strongly
- that a bomb
- GASPS AND CLAMOUR
..was inside one of them
and, therefore, most likely
inside a piece of luggage.
Does this mean the bomber
was a passenger?
That's the current
focus of enquiries, yes.
It's been reported that,
on December 5th,
an anonymous call to the
US Embassy in Helsinki
warned that a bomb would
be put on a Pan Am flight.
Why weren't the public warned?
My current understanding
is that there are a number
of these kind of warnings,
but it's not always clear
which ones to take seriously.
Could the bomb have been
in Khaled Jaafar's luggage?
Not prepared to talk about
individual passengers at the moment.
But you are aware that the FBI has
just questioned Jaafar's father?
I'm sure the FBI will be interviewing
a great many of the victims' families.
Well, aren't you leading
the investigation, Mr Orr?
Yes, I am leading this investigation
..but the FBI have specialisms
in limited areas
that we are very grateful for.
Specialisms that you don't have?
21 countries have lost citizens
in this attack
..so, inevitably, it will
require an international effort.
In fact, very soon,
we will be having
our first international meeting,
with investigators from the FBI
and a host of other countries
..where we will be sharing
information and making progress.
We will have further updates for
you then, but that's all for now.
Thank you.
REPORTERS SHOU
PHONES RING
Well-handled in there, DCS Orr.
The Jaafar business catch you off-guard?
Door.
Did you know the FBI were
questioning Jaafar's family?
Did you?
No.
No, I was as surprised as you.
Any idea why they'd be taking
a closer look at him?
Well, the press picked up on him
because he's Middle Eastern.
Please tell me that's
not enough for the FBI.
SCOFFS: No. One would hope not.
What have you got, then? Anything?
I have the bare minimum.
20 years of age, Lebanese-born,
American Muslim.
Boarded connecting Flight 103A
from Frankfurt to Heathrow.
If the FBI are looking into him,
then they're not sharing something.
So, you don't trust the FBI,
yet you keep an
FBI explosives expert here
instead of my
counter-terror specialists?
Tom Thurman's good. He does his job.
Look, DCS Orr, you and your team
are doing an incredible work
gathering all this evidence,
but what this case needs
is intelligence,
and that's what we receive in London.
All right, and then so
..what are you hearing? Any links?
Islamic Jihad?
Palestinian ANO? What?
Ah, so you know exactly as much
as I do, which is nothing.
Look, you must admit,
my team has the expertise here.
We can help. Let us take
over the Jaafar enquiries.
We're more used to
talking to the CIA and FBI.
- "Take over"?
- Hmm.
Scottish soil, Scottish evidence,
Scottish procedure.
And I don't need
intelligence to tell me that.
Ladies, smashing job you're
doing here in the typing pool.
Look lively.
I need everything
you've got on passenger Jaafar.
Khaled Jaafar, seat 53K.
Pan Am passenger manifest
said he'd two hold bags.
- Any sign of them?
- No.
As far as I recall,
there's only one item currently
linked to him in Holmes.
This is it. His driver's license.
It was found with his body.
13:05 on the 22nd December.
Sector C.
We need to figure out
where his bags are.
Thing is the thing - FBI, Anti Terror,
they can have all the
intelligence they want,
but nothing beats fucking evidence.
I'll get this shared with the team.
Good recall, McCusker.
- So you're Glasgow-based, aren't ye?
- Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, my driver's exhausted, so
..might have to come to you
now and again for a lift. That OK?
- Course. Any time.
- Good.
"Course. Any time."
PHONE RINGS
This is Dick Marquise.
Mr Marquise.
Mr Orr.
Hi, how are you?
Why wasn't I informed
that the FBI had interviewed
Khaled Jaafar's parents?
Well, I mean, my agents
visited a number of families.
That's standard protocol.
I take it wasn't random that
they were prioritised for a visit.
No, not entirely.
We just found out that
he visited Lebanon recently.
And you didn't think that
was worth sharing with us?
Look, I'm sorry,
but it really just came in.
We've got a lot of
moving pieces here, so
What did you get from
the visit to the family?
Nothing.
Nothing, unfortunately.
So, all you have on him is that
he recently visited Lebanon?
For now, yeah.
Well, when you get more
..you keep me informed
- ..OK?
- Of course.
- Of course. And, Mr Orr, I'm so
- CALL DISCONNECTS
Hello?
Sorry, got caught up
on the phone with Orr.
He's not happy with us.
Why not?
Well, he thinks we're
holding back intel on Jaafar.
Well, he's on the money, then.
That's not exactly the level of
investigation the Scots are used to.
We can't risk leaks.
So what is the new
intelligence on Jaafar?
Jaafar visited the
Beqaa Valley in Lebanon.
It's not much of a tourist destination.
No, but it's full of
terrorist training camps.
You think Hezbollah recruited him?
Well, I didn't
..until one of my analysts found this.
CIA surveillance shot of a low-level
terrorist in Germany last year,
part of a Hezbollah feeder cell.
We didn't have a name for him,
but now we think it might be Jaafar.
I could see that.
Plus, we think Jaafar's
mother is a first cousin
of Hafez al-Assad - very
pro-Palestinian Syrian President.
And also Jaafar was
observed in passport control
by a Pakistani passenger -
a Yasmin Siddique.
We just spoke with her. She reported
that he was acting nervously.
- She'd testify to that?
- Yeah. Yeah, I think she would.
OK. What are your next steps?
Reid and Marshman are going
to interview the father again,
but this time in DC.
You think he knows more than he's said?
Well, fathers often do.
And we don't know the kid
knew a bomb was in his bag
But if you were recruiting
for America's enemies?
It's perfect.
US passport holder,
no special security alerts,
bringing luggage home for the holidays.
And what can we feed up
to the White House?
Headlines only. No specifics yet.
Walk with me. There's
something I want to discuss.
How long you been at the bureau,
Dick? It's your whole career, right?
Correct. Same as my old man.
Second generation.
He must be proud.
He's satisfied with my choices.
This investigation, it's tricky.
See, every country that lost citizens
are all going to want their own justice,
but we have to face facts -
this was an attack on America.
A Pan Am plane with
190 Americans on board.
- What else could it be?
- We need to be out front, leading this thing.
- I don't doubt the Scots' commitment, but
- I hear you.
So, that in mind,
I want you to lead a US Task Force.
Field Offices. DOJ.
- If you're up for it.
- Of course, yes.
You'll be representing us
at the first international meeting
in Scotland.
- Well, thanks for the faith, Neil.
- We've got to move fast,
because if you were a Hezbollah cell
that just downed an American 747
Why would you stop at just one?
Love you.
You think these are OK?
They're fine. They're beautiful.
What's that?
Some paperwork that
I thought might be useful.
Like what?
Nothing, really. It's fine.
Roy, what's in there?
It's Tim's dental records.
I had the office fax them over.
Now, this shoe is one of 14,000 items
brought into this warehouse so far.
Items we were never supposed to see.
I believe the intention was for the
bomb to detonate over the Atlantic,
where everything would
have been lost forever.
But headwinds caused them to
route the plane towards Glasgow,
meaning the bomb went
off over Lockerbie,
making it a treasure trove of evidence.
Now, each item will
have its own unique ID
and your job will be
to assess it for bomb damage.
Anything with pitting,
blackening, warping, or burning
will be prioritised for
explosive residue testing at RARDE.
I'm not sure everybody knows "RARDE".
"Royal Armament Research and
Development Establishment," in Kent.
Allen Feraday's IRA experience there
will give you forensic expertise,
which is half of what any good
bomb scene response team needs.
What's the other half?
Eyeballs.
Now, let's get back to the shoe.
Now, have a good look at it now.
Should we set that aside for Feraday?
Yes.
Good.
I agree.
No pitting.
No foreign material.
But there are signs of
burn damage on the sole.
Now, was this shoe in
the bomber's suitcase?
Probably not.
But in a bag close by?
Potentially.
How you categorise a child's shoe
may seem like a small decision
..but I'm here to tell you that the
choices you make in this warehouse
..will be the most crucial
of your whole careers.
You all right?
Yeah, yeah. All good.
Excuse me, can I help?
This is a restricted area.
Yeah, they said if I waited here,
Mr Orr might be able to see me.
What is it you want him for?
I came to bring Mikey home.
He's married to my wife's sister.
He's got a baby back home.
19 months.
I'm sorry to hear that.
I got a call saying
he's been identified,
that he's in the ice rink, but I'm
I'm still waiting to see him.
Unfortunately, a delay's not unusual.
His wife won't believe
he's dead until I see him myself.
I understand. However, we
We don't advise that.
What about his belongings?
Would there be any info on that?
Come on. Follow me.
Sandy, give us a wee second here.
Right, have a seat, pal.
OK, what's Mikey's full name.
It's Michael Joseph Doyle.
- OK. D-O-Y-L-E?
- Yeah.
OK. So
..so far, it is just his body.
He's confirmed as not of interest.
Sorry. That just means
to the enquiry.
I get it. It's OK.
I can see your request to view him here.
It looks like he's going
to be released imminently.
Give us the name of your hotel,
and I'll be touch
when I've got some news.
Thank you.
I appreciate it.
How can they not say
if he's been found yet?
I don't know.
It said in the paper
some people may never be found.
It's freezing. Come on,
let's get you back in the car.
What if we don't find him, Roy?
What if we don't get him back?
Attention!
As the first victims of
the doomed jumbo jet
began their journey
home to America tonight,
the town of Lockerbie
turned out to grieve.
Standing in the high street of the town,
Pan Am stewardesses struggling
with their emotions.
The people of America and
Scotland united in grief.
President George Bush has called an
emergency meeting with leaders of
- Hiya, love.
- Hiya, darlin'.
Right
..where are the girls?
Was going to see if they fancied
a game on the Spectrum.
It's after ten, Ed.
Yeah, course.
Sorry.
Why's my old jacket out?
It's for the boy that lost his family.
Steven Flannigan.
I heard they were doing a ceremony
for all the unfound victims.
I just
I thought
He won't have anything
to wear to that, will he?
- It's all gone.
- That's very thoughtful. Thank you.
- You're meant to be in bed, wee girl.
- I heard Dad's car.
Oh, I'm sorry, have I woken you up?
That's OK. Mum says you're
working hard cos of the big crash.
It's OK, isn't it, though?
It's never going to happen again.
Yeah. Listen, I don't want
you worrying about all that.
You get back up to bed,
and I'll come tuck you in.
Go on. Off you go!
Love you, sweetheart.
I don't think you should
be saying that to her.
Saying what?
Until we catch who's responsible,
who's to say it won't happen again?
Yeah, I realise that, Ed.
I was a police officer too, remember?
- Mum!
- I'm not daft.
- But she's a child. - June
- Mum!
Coming.
OK.
Thanks for coming in, Mr Jaafar.
We just wanted to discuss
some new information that we have.
New New information?
Yeah, well, the fact is,
we fear your son may have
been involved in this mess.
I was a lawyer in Lebanon
before we moved here.
- I'm not a fool.
- We know you're not a fool, sir.
Yeah, neither was my son.
Khaled was a good student.
He was studying to become an architect.
He had no interest in politics.
Khaled recently fell in love, yes?
Who told you that?
You didn't approve.
Well
..she was not right for him.
He needed to complete his
studies here, in America.
She wanted to take him away.
And he didn't have the money to marry.
So, he needed more money in order
to make his own choice of wife?
My son would never hurt anyone,
let alone kill 270 people.
Mr Jaafar
..this man is Hassan el-Salheli.
We suspect he's got
possible links to Hezbollah.
We just discovered that
Khaled stayed with him in Germany.
Yeah, I don't know him.
I don't know anything about that.
He even threw him a departure party.
Dortmund Station.
21st of December.
To see Khaled off to Frankfurt Airport,
like he was going to war.
A hero's send-off.
Well, perhaps he was being kind.
Look, we are a generous culture.
Before Germany,
Khaled visited the Beqaa Valley.
Some of your relatives
involved in drug smuggling there?
SCOFFS: No.
Hezbollah runs the valley.
Show me who doesn't have links
to someone connected
to drug smuggling there.
Doesn't mean they're involved.
Is it possible that,
when back in the Valley,
Khaled was coerced -
for money, or love -
to transporting something on a plane?
Hezbollah preying on an innocent
American youth in their territory -
is that not plausible?
No.
We don't think your son
was a terrorist, Mr Jaafar.
You don't?
I think he thought
what he had in his bag
..was drugs, at worst
..and he was tricked
into carrying a bomb.
"Tricked"?
MUSIC BLARES
Has anything come in regarding Jaafar?
No. Nothing yet.
I mean, the thing is
..most of the items
found out on the fields
..they're only sorted into
evidential and non-evidential, so
..it's often not clear
what belongs to who.
We've got a whole
warehouse full of items
that haven't been linked to anyone.
- And your point being?
- My point being,
maybe we've got Jaafar's bags
and we just don't know it yet.
METALLIC CLANGING, BEEPING
So, what have we got here, Tam?
Well, these are the remains of
the most damaged luggage pallets
from Pan Am 103,
the ones most likely
to have held the bomb.
Now, once they're all put back together,
it'll look something like this
..but with a blast hole
appearing in one.
Well
..that's the idea, anyways.
What's this telling us?
We already know the bomb
was in the luggage hold.
Well, yes, we do,
but baggage was loaded at different
airports at different times
and in different luggage containers.
If we figure out which
luggage container held the bomb,
you can figure out which
airport it was loaded at.
Oh, hello.
Sorry, I'm not sure who to ask.
I've got something
you might want to see.
There's a name on the inside.
I was wondering if you could get it
to the family of whoever owned it.
I'm sure it would mean a lot to them.
The thing is, if it came from the plane,
first, it'll need to be assessed
to make sure it isn't
of evidential value.
- You mean it could be a clue?
- Yes.
We'll need to process it.
But if it's not evidence,
it'll go back to the family, won't it?
Anything that isn't evidence
is being put to the side.
We just don't have the manpower
to process it at the moment.
Come on. For one wee Bible?
If we did it for one,
we'd have to do it for all.
You're saying that all that stuff,
all those bags and clothes,
are just being left somewhere?
It's just
..you know, DCS Orr says
we have to prioritise.
Well, you tell DCS Orr
..that he needs to have a think
about those"priorities".
That's him.
That's Mikey.
OK.
Thank you.
- Come on. I'll give you a lift back.
- OK.
Come in.
Oh, thanks very much.
Hello.
Some clean uniforms there
for the boys out in the fields.
Could I have a word?
Moira
..WPC Aitken informs me
that you've got an issue
with the fact that belongings
haven't being returned
to the families as yet.
We all do.
It's a sin, so it is.
Think how badly people
need those things,
how much they could help them.
I agree.
Good.
The problem is, there's so much of it.
And a lot of it's not fit for return.
It's not just covered in mud,
it's covered in a lot worse besides.
Lauren told me that you don't have
enough manpower to do the clean-up.
No. To be honest, we don't
..which is why I was wondering
if you and your volunteers
might step in.
Us?
I mean, it's tough work,
and it could go on for weeks, but
If you don't feel you're able to
Of course we feel able.
We're used to tough work.
We're not the ones sitting behind
a desk all day, are we, Moira?
No, we're not.
You just tell us when we start.
We'll be there.
KNOCK AT DOOR
Mrs Harley?
Yes.
I'm DS McCusker.
I've brought a few bits here for Steven.
Oh. Oh, that's
That's lovely, come on in.
Did you have a whip round
down at the station for him?
My wife's idea.
Just a few bits and pieces
I'm not using.
That's really kind of you both.
- Have a seat.
- No, no. I I can't stay long.
How is he?
His brother's up from Blackpool,
so that's helping a wee bit, but
OK, yeah. Is he about?
Oh, yeah, of course..
Steven, you've got a visitor.
CLEARS THROA
All right, pal. How's it going?
Fine, aye.
I've brought you some things
I thought you could use.
Charity case, am I?
No. No, no. I.., I just
I wasn't sure you had a suit jacket
..for the ceremony.
I brought you some books.
Some old comics.
It's a daft idea.
I'll take this all back.
No, it's
It's all right.
Sorry, Ed, it's
It's nice.
Thanks.
They're really flying you Pan Am
to Scotland?
It'll be fine.
I just keep thinking about
those college kids on board.
That could have been Ian
coming home from a semester abroad.
Yes. I know.
And I read there were
16 children under ten on board.
Pat!
What?
I have to solve this.
And to do that, I have to be rational.
I can't be rational
if I'm thinking about
..the other side of things.
It seems pretty rational
to think of it, if you ask me.
I just don't think
you'll be able to avoid it,
- being over there, you know?
- OK.
- Who're you calling?
- Pizza place.
I'm going to go ask
the boys what they want.
DOOR OPENS
Good news.
They found one of Jafaar's bags
last night at Dexstar.
Definitely his?
It was found on Minsca Farm,
27th of December,
with flight coupons inside in his name.
Any bomb damage?
None.
What about the second bag?
No sign yet.
All right.
I want you to go to Dexstar,
and I want you to go through
all of the luggage personally,
and you find that second bag.
Er What about Holmes?
This takes priority.
CAMERA CLICKS
Morning, boss.
They ready for us?
More than ready. The boffins
are all excited about something.
Moonlighting as a taxi driver, McCusker?
I didn't know times were so tough, son.
Practise that as you were driving up?
It's very good, Harry.
Aye. Hope he left you a good tip.
We found this as we were reconstructing
the most heavily-damaged luggage pallet.
- What is it?
- We'll have to get RARDE to look at it,
but it looks electronic to us.
And that's the pallet it came from?
Yes. We believe this to be
the epicentre of the explosion,
where the bomb was held -
pallet AVE 4041.
Do we know what luggage
was contained in this pallet?
This is one of
the small number of pallets
that contained luggage from
both Heathrow and Frankfurt.
Jaafar boarded at Frankfurt.
Do we know Jaafar's luggage
was in this pallet?
Well, the thing is, at this time,
we've got an incomplete picture
of the Frankfurt baggage.
- Why?
- The Germans are dragging their feet
about the Frankfurt luggage list.
I've asked them for it several times.
I even said, "Please."
Well, the Germans are arriving soon.
Let's see what they've
got to say for themselves.
These are items that have
been deemed ready for clean-up
before return to the families.
Everything must be signed
in and out of this room.
Nothing enters or leaves
without paperwork, OK?
You take an item from here
and clean it up, best you can,
without damaging it.
Now, some items will just need
a little wiping down while others
..will require more work.
Right. Let's get on with it.
Here we are here.
This is what we've got on Khalid Jaafar.
The bag they've identified
and his licence.
We've got a copy of this at Holmes.
You'd better start digging.
Argh!
Roy
..why don't you come inside?
It's getting late.
Just a few more
..then I'll be in.
Argh!
Roy
You go inside.
I'll speak to them.
REPORTER: - As families around
the globe continue to demand answers,
investigators from several countries
will join air accident experts and
Scottish detectives in Lockerbie
for the first international conference
to discuss the preliminary finding
around the bombing of Pan Am 103.
- Dick.
- Tom.
- How are you?
- Good. Good to see you again.
This is DCS Orr.
Great to meet you, finally.
It's better to do this sort
of thing in person, right?
Well, I hope so.
Please.
Oh, wow. I wasn't expecting
an elementary school.
Oh, don't you worry.
The kids are all safely tucked away
in another building.
This is our incident centre.
Yes, of course.
How was your flight?
Good. Good.
No issues.
You're making great progress here, Tom.
- Sir.
- That'll be all for now, Tom. Thank you.
So
..Khalid Jaafar.
How was the interview with his father?
Good.
Nothing new came of it, unfortunately.
Really, just an informal chat.
I'm sure it wasn't informal for him.
No. No. Probably not.
I've heard a lot about
your evidence collection, Mr Orr.
It's amazing work.
800-square-mile crime scene, was it?
Right.
Well
..you know, we'd really
love to take a look
at anything you have uncovered so far.
- CLEARS THROA
- You You want to see our evidence,
while you refuse to share your intel.
How does that work?
I I We've shared everything
that we're able to at this point.
You have intel
you're not sharing with us.
You wouldn't have gone to the father
for a second interview otherwise.
Am I right?
Yes.
Yes, there are details
that I'm not authorised
to share at the international meeting.
I can give headlines, but there's
just nothing firm enough yet.
Plus, we can't risk anything
getting out to the press,
make life worse for Jaafar's
family than it already is.
Hmm, I think the genie's
already out of the bottle,
with regard to that one.
I'm not asking you to share
everything with everyone.
Just with me
..and a few select members of my team.
In exchange
..we get access to your evidence?
You show me yours, I'll show you mine.
INDISTINCT CHATTER
Did Marquise have intel on Jaafar?
Mm-hm.
A lot, and he seemed very confident
he's our guy.
You think he's sharing
everything he has?
No chance.
Gentlemen, welcome, all, to Lockerbie
and the first international meeting.
I'd like to give
a hearty Scottish welcome
to Dick Marquise of the FBI,
Hans Sonntag and Director Klink,
German investigators from the BKA.
And from RARDE
Allen Feraday.
While the investigation's
in the early stages,
we've began to focus on
one potential suspect -
Khalid Jaafar, a young
American-Lebanese passenger
who, we have been informed,
was involved in some suspicious
activities in the Middle East.
We've recovered one of his bags,
but we know that he checked in two,
so the current theory
is that the second bag
may have contained the bomb.
AAIB believe that they've found
the site of the explosion.
And this has been verified the
findings of RARDE. Is that correct?
We examined the metal of the pallet
and found residue consistent
with explosive contact with an IED.
So, we can now confirm that this is
the pallet that contained the bomb?
- Yeah.
- So, what does this tell us?
The pallets mainly contained
luggage solely from Heathrow.
This pallet also contained luggage
from a connecting Frankfurt flight.
But the pallet contained
lots of luggage.
You can't know the bomb
got through at Frankfurt.
Exactly.
And that's why we have requested the
luggage list from Frankfurt Airport.
Several times.
But you have the Pan Am manifests
for both flights, correct?
That should tell you all you
need to know about the luggage.
With all due respect, no, it doesn't.
The Pan Am luggage list lacks detail.
The Frankfurt list
would show the exact origin
of every bag loaded
at Frankfurt Airport.
Unfortunately, we're not
in possession of the luggage list.
Can I ask, why not?
Mr Sonntag?
CLEARS THROA
The airport have told
us it is electronic
and erases itself after seven days.
But that would give you
a week to print it.
We don't have it.
I accept this is unfortunate.
"Unfortunate"?
Is there anything solid on this Jaafar?
Any actual evidence
linking him to the bombing?
Not yet, but then we
haven't found the second bag.
So, you have nothing?
No.
But then, if the bag held the bomb
..there wouldn't be
much to find, would there?
How can you lose a luggage list?
Well, if it proves
that Frankfurt Airport
is how the bomb got into the system,
it's not going to be
their top priority, is it?
- That's a wee bit cynical, boss, no?
- Mm-hm.
McCusker.
- Dick Marquise, FBI.
- Hi.
McCusker's looking to find
anything linking to Jaafar.
We spoke on the phone,
a few days after the bombing.
Oh, sorry. Bit of a blur,
those first few days.
Any joy?
So, that's the bag found on
Minsca Farm on the 27th of December.
Anything useful inside?
ID or anything?
Just the flight coupons.
His driver's license was
located not far from his body,
but there's nothing else suggesting
he was involved in the attack.
You still haven't found the second bag?
Nothing yet, but there's
still a lot to go through.
If it's there at all.
Do you have any extra gloves?
- For you?
- Yeah.
As long as that's OK with you, DCS Orr.
Aye, sure.
We'll leave you here.
We need to get back.
Of course.
- Sure you don't mind?
- No, no. I'll take all the help I can get.
Great.
See you after.
Got men's clothing here.
What's this?
It's just a doctor's case.
What?
CLEARS THROA
I got something.
Jaafar's from Michigan.
What colour's the jacket on the license?
Blue, I think.
That's his jacket.
Yeah, it is.
- It's got to be his bag.
- And it's still in one piece.
Jaafar's not the bomber.
He's just a passenger.
And another victim.
I owe you an apology, DCS Orr.
We really thought this intel
on Jaafar was solid.
Well, he's ruled out, so
..it's a step forward.
I'm not sure how much of a
comfort that's going to be
to Jaafar's family.
What next for your team?
We move on. Keep searching.
I'll be in touch with whatever comes in.
Yeah.
So will I.
Safe travel.
I gave you life once and I'm
I'm only sorry
I can't give you life again.
Do you think there'll be
photographers at the ceremony?
Eh?
I don't want them to take my photo.
They're not going to take a photo
of that ugly mug, now are they?
Shut up!
I just don't want to be
in the paper again.
Well, if they are there,
I won't let them take your photo.
- All right?
- All right.
Come here.
Come here!
You look good.
We gather here today
to commemorate the lives
of those who, sadly,
have not been found.
Whilst we may not have them with us,
we hold them tightly in our hearts,
today and every day.
These 17 souls will forever
be part of our lives.
May this last farewell express
the depth of our love for them.
May it ease, a little, our sense of loss
and strengthen our hope.
If the word "Lockerbie"
will be associated
with this terrible tragedy,
perhaps it'll also be spoken of,
in the future, with admiration,
through the example of its people.
We pray.
Pray for all who have lost someone.
Amen.
BAGPIPES PLAY
Mr McCusker?
Yeah.
David, how are you doing? You OK?
I just wanted to say thanks again -
for the jacket and everything.
It's It's no problem at all.
I'm hoping he can come live
with me in Blackpool soon,
but knowing he's got folk here, it
It means a lot.
I think he's got the
whole town looking after him.
Thanks again, Ed.
We have to investigate every
possibility, every passenger,
but I acknowledge that this
was difficult for your family
and all we can do is apologise.
We're sorry if we've caused
any additional pain,
discomfort.
"If"?
You will move on to the next suspect.
But there's no moving on for us.
The newspaper articles, the lies
..they will never go away.
- Yes?
- Allen Feraday.
I've examined the shards
found at Longtown.
- And?
- Well, it's definitely something electronic
and extensively bomb-damaged.
The fact it came from inside the
pallet, it's blasting outwards
It was either part of
the bomb or next to it.
So, let me get this straight.
You think it could be part of the bomb?
I do.
Do you have an appointment, sir?
No appointment, but I know
who put the bomb on Pan Am 103.
