The Garden: Commune or Cult (2023) s01e02 Episode Script

Suspicious Minds

[woman] We're open to anybody
at any time.
-[man] It's not a safe place.
-[man 2] We're here
creating something new.
We're gonna burn it.
[man 3] If I don't conform,
I am outcasted.
[woman 2] There's a reason
they're off the grid.
[woman 3] For the love of
all humanity.
[woman 4]
The Garden is a cult.
You are putting
us all in danger.
Stop filming.
[woman 5] We're going to
tell our true story.
-[officer speaking]
-Yeah.
[officer] Okay.
[Narayah speaking]
Like, I'm a paranoid person.
But, like, if anyone's an
FBI agent, it's her, you know?
[Narayah speaking]
[officer] Okay.
I don't even know
if I should talk about this
on camera,
but, like, come one, like,
we're, like, literally, like,
creating a show
about a bunch of anarchists
trying to create a new world.
Trust me,
I don't think someone's
just gonna let that slide.
I don't know if it's you guys,
and youse are gonna
[bleep] us up,
and I don't feel that
from youse thus far.
But if it is anyone,
it's Narayah,
because that is all she has
done from the get-go,
is derail us all.
I'm saying I feel unsafe
with her here!
I feel like she's gonna
[bleep] poison me
or something.
I have no idea. I don't know
what she's capable of.
I am feeling endangered.
[Tree] Because youse not
[bleep] do anything about it.
You just stand there and say,
"She's over there filming."
[Tree] My ass.
Just [bleep] deal with it.
I [bleep] will
[officer] Okay.
[officer] Based on
what you're telling me,
I mean,
I'm not seeing an assault.
So I guess my question,
Narayah, is this,
I mean, do you want to
continue to be here or not?
[officer] There's no way
that they can make you go
where you don't wanna go.
You're a free person
in this country
-and if you choose to leave--
-[Narayah] So I can stay
on the land?
[officer] Well,
do you have any allies here
whatsoever,
anybody that can help you?
[officer] Okay.
[officer] Well, I mean,
-I guess let's go
back up here
-I appreciate it.
and let 'em know
there's not an assault here,
but she chooses not to go.
[Tyler] If Tree would've
grabbed my phone,
I would have a hard time
reacting kindly.
That's normal.
-Normal? Like, well,
I mean, if he did
-Yeah, yeah, yeah, kids,
kids stealin'
each other's toys.
But from an actual
outside perspective,
that's actually
against the law 'cause,
you know, if she has,
like, an iPhone, like,
a newer iPhone
that's over $500 value,
that's, like,
actually a felony.
I mean, okay.
So, then Tree goes to jail
and we bail him out.
You know,
and then he's got
this crazy story to tell.
-I mean, what is
the worst-case scenario?
-Right.
-I mean
-I mean, uh, I don't know.
I guess to me it's--
it doesn't seem
all that needed
or appropriate.
This is the way I see it,
though.
Compared to
the tragedies of the world,
-you know, like,
we have starving children.
-Sure.
-Right.
-We have countries
being enslaved.
-True.
-We have famine and--
Yeah, I mean,
this is small stuff.
You know, little stuff.
Don't matter.
Sure, I mean, I guess
if you compare it to, like,
-uh, enslavement,
it's not that big of a deal.
-Yeah. Yeah.
Tree stealing Narayah's phone,
for me,
if you touch my [bleep],
I'm gonna touch you.
Plain and simple.
It got me really
questioning things a lot.
Like, honestly,
I don't even know if I wanna
stay past the 10 days.
If it's like this
the whole time, [bleep] that.
[coughing]
After the cop left,
I decided to stay
because this is
a huge opportunity
to help others and show others
that this type of thing
is possible.
And, um
Yeah, I just keep trusting
and knowing
that everything
will be taken care of
and I'm just gonna
keep being me.
[Patrick] The purpose
of this plant project
in Missouri
is to build out a sustainable
off-grid community,
and making space
for new people
to come and be a part
of what we're doing.
Which is really,
kinda tricky, you know?
Uh, and it causes, like,
a bit of a headache.
People coming into it
don't have that
previous experience.
So we have a 10-day
visitation process
because when forming a group,
you need people
that are willing to
put their selves on the line
to protect the group.
It takes a village
to build a village,
but all it takes is one person
to burn it all down.
We need another
side order of eggs.
-How many?
-Three.
Do six.
I might be
not in the best shape
that I used to be.
I feel heavy.
I feel kinda mopey.
I gotta get my old self back,
'cause this world's
going to hell in a handbasket
in a hurry.
Girls, listen up.
I've brought you here
because I'm gonna be
going away for a little while.
I'm gonna be going out west,
and I'm gonna be
living off the grid
in a commune
with other people.
How do you feel about that?
[Courtney speaking]
This is my 12-gauge shotgun.
-[shotgun cocks]
-[Covington] This is
an army grade,
military grade shovel.
Yeah, I have used it
for number twos quite a bit.
God is coming back
very shortly, in my opinion.
We are at the end of times.
[producer] Do you think
your dad will be able to
handle himself
out in wilderness?
No.
-[all laughing]
-Kind of.
[Covington] I would not
ever eat a person.
Unless we were in a serious
apocalyptic situation.
[laughs] Then, everybody
for themselves, buddy.
If we're in a time
to where there's absolutely
nothing else to eat,
I'll cook a thigh.
I live with four daughters,
and I have one wife.
So, I'm outnumbered
five to one.
Tyler, he says
he has a hard time
being around
four women all the time,
but I think he does--
He's great.
I live in a sea of estrogen,
so sometimes
it's a little stressful,
but I wouldn't change it
for the world.
They're my girls.
Girls, believe it or not,
back before
any of y'all were born,
your daddy
was a big outdoorsman.
That's who I was.
But, Daddy's gonna
get back to this.
Tyler, he used to hike a lot.
I've seen all of his pictures,
and I know that
he loved being outdoors.
But, I don't know
what's happened. [chuckles]
I've gotten way out of shape.
I've kinda gotten complacent.
And the way that
this world's goin',
these are real-life scenarios.
And I'm going
on this excursion
to meet other people.
I'm gonna spend
every day learnin'.
'Cause if something
does happen,
I'ma be prepared.
Lily, that's not funny.
Think of it,
when nobody has food
and nobody has water,
guess what other people
are gonna do?
You know what looting is?
I'm only getting
aggravated because
when you find this funny,
it
[hesitates] There may come
a time where
we have to
enforce these skills,
and it's because
I love every damn one of you.
It's my job to protect you.
In effect,
this could be a bad situation.
It is my job to protect you.
It's my job to protect you
as your dad.
It's cause I love you.
This is real life.
And so I need you all
to pay attention.
All right?
My role is to protect
my family and my five girls.
Hell or high water,
that is my job.
If the end of the world comes,
I'm the one gonna be
on the front lines
protecting them.
I think living off the grid
is going to teach me
so many different
trades and skills.
It's gonna get me there
and see a different
side of things.
I've lost my man card.
This is a calling to
turn this ship around.
This is going to be
my redemption story.
[woman] Okay, next topic
we have is seed kitchen.
So I put that down,
we've already started it.
We have a temporary kitchen
set up right here.
And then we're gonna set out
some logs there,
so that people can hang out
and then cook over here.
Yeah, wherever the kitchen is,
the primary kitchen,
everything else will follow,
probably.
The toilet, the compost.
So, like
Yeah, if you figure out
where that kitchen's gonna be.
But like it's, you know,
I feel like, we should just,
like, chill too.
Anything else on seed kitchen?
I was wondering
how everyone felt
about me saging the circle
and maybe just taking
a moment
to be still and quiet
and center ourselves.
You don't like sage?
Okay, I'll pass over you.
[man] I just would like some
respect for my time too,
you know.
Like, we talking about--
I can see things very clearly
and deeply.
Please come to me directly
if you're feeling anything
about me towards me.
I'll take it. I'll do it.
I'm ready.
We rub each other wrong,
and that's okay.
We don't gotta be
best friends.
When we were making
consensus for you
to come in this group,
I didn't think it
was a good idea
to, uh, consense
for you to come.
I didn't think
you were a good fit.
[Tyler] There is something
off in this camp
when it comes to Narayah.
I'm a military vet.
I'm a prepper.
I've been, you know, lingering
with the question in mind,
"How are they gonna take me?"
And then I start hearing
other people talk.
I was like,
"What is wrong with Narayah?"
It's making me feel
really uneasy.
I'm getting tired of this,
Narayah.
-Let's just take a breath.
-You had your shot
at the Garden
to show yourself
for people to start
to appreciate you
and build community together.
I am here
to the end
and I'm not gonna
be oppressed.
[Julia] Uh, I'm gonna stop
facilitating this meeting,
um, and break off.
And I love you, Narayah,
but I'm starving
and I'm thirsty
and I gotta go. I'm sorry.
I love you and I hear you.
Even being aware that
there's something going on,
there's still like
this underlying energy
of wanting to make it work.
[woman] Whoo!
Hoka's back
with the tipi pole!
[all cheering]
-Whoo!
-[man] There you go.
We did it!
[Julia] Hoka is a friend
and he is like
of the same movement
of wanting to make
change in the world
and defend forests.
We organized that
he will bring a tipi
that was made for us
by people of the Lakota tribe
to, uh, set up.
Guys, this is a bigger one.
These are cedar.
Those are ash.
[Hoka] Before there was
what we knew as a house,
this is what my people
lived in here.
My name's Hoka.
I'm from
the Spirit Lake Nation
in North Dakota.
When I was 17,
I went to prison
for three felony assaults.
I was in prison for ten years.
Coming out of prison,
reconnecting with the land
did save my life.
I was reaffirming
my people's belief.
Like, "Hey,
there is a way for you.
You're not lost. Come back."
This represents the skin
of our grandmother.
And we're starting that vision
that our people long ago saw.
They saw all you guys here.
They saw me standing here.
With Narayah,
the tension is palpable.
It is like you can feel it
swirling in the air
like something's gonna happen.
I haven't been around
long enough to understand,
but I feel like
it's time to get to work.
And I'm trying to see
where I fit in.
And right now,
one of their biggest projects
that they have
is this tipi.
[Hoka] So I want you guys
all to stand up.
And we're all gonna
face the sun.
[Hoka chanting]
-Aho!
-[all] Aho!
The process of building
and raising a tipi
is actually quite complicated.
You gotta get
the poles themselves
and then there's preparation
of getting the poles ready.
-Walk it.
-Walk it up.
[Tyler] And then standing up
the poles correctly
and then wrapping the ropes
around them correctly.
Otherwise, it all falls apart.
[woman] Yeah!
[all applauding]
[woman 2] Beautiful.
[Jag] I love all you guys.
I really feel
like it's important
for me to speak
from my heart and my soul
and my spirit right now.
And it might not
make any sense
'cause I'm gonna use words
that are just coming
from some other place.
Instantly,
I heard something say,
"You need to speak
in light words."
[speaking other language]
I have no clue
what I'm saying.
It just kind of like
gets channeled and sent to me.
[continues speaking
other language]
Bear with me. It might take
a second to clear.
We are all one
and may we move that way.
May we see clearly
with our first eye.
Forever and always in
the highest of love and light.
The path of purity.
Thank you for us
all being present.
What are you doing?
And be willing
to choose another way.
She has an ego
that I can't comprehend
and that is completely toxic
for community.
She thinks she's some
spiritual healer,
which is complete [bleep].
It's just made up.
Hope.
[Tree] All she wants to do
is just steal the show.
She wants to steal
the whole moment.
Never mind the countless
things that happened before.
That was the last straw
for me.
I couldn't take it
after that tipi.
Obviously,
you and Narayah are friends.
So that's why I'm here
to discuss.
I really don't trust her.
She is full of [bleep].
I just can't take her anymore.
Narayah's one of
my best friends already.
It's mostly like a connection
with like spirituality.
[Tree] I don't see
any better of a solution
for the community.
It sucks
to see this happening.
[Xans] I used to stand up
for Narayah
because I've always
had an issue
with adhering to standards
and whatever authority's
placed my way.
So I know what it's like
to feel like an outsider
and to not be accepted.
Just mishandled conflicts.
I've seen like a pattern
of mishandled conflicts.
And I feel like
I don't want this
to just kind of bleed over
into the next one
that just doesn't fit
or just doesn't adhere to
the standards.
[Covington] I was up in
Lafayette, Tennessee,
which is about two hours
north of me,
and I go up there and see
some of my clients.
One day,
I was down a backroad,
I lost GPS.
And then I just saw
this entry.
It just said "The Garden."
I learned they live
off the grid
and they have a commune.
And I think that this is
the perfect timing for me
to go out there
and observe these folks
that are building a commune.
No, I haven't heard
any allegations
that the farm's a cult. No.
Oh, yeah. Let me see.
I like to see anything.
[bleep]
[clears throat] "Everything
began to fall apart
for the garden
when, set in a live stream
in early March,
the commune
killed a stray cat
and then ate the cat
so it wouldn't go to waste."
I mean
I-- If the world comes
to an end
I'll do what I gotta do
to protect my family.
Number one.
If we gotta skin a cat,
we gotta skin a cat.
We gotta do
what we gotta do, right?
Get 'er done.
[Courtney] Yeah, I definitely
hope there's no sacrifices,
or anything scary like that.
That would be crazy.
[exhales] Hoo.
I mean, I could see cats
and deers being sacrificed.
Nothing worse than animals,
I would hope.
I would hope not babies
would be sacrificed
or people.
No!
He's not going.
[both chuckles]
-Yeah--
-I don't want him to leave.
He's not going.
I told him he's
I told him he's not going.
That he's not going.
-[girl 1 speaking]
-[chuckles]
[softly] It's all right.
You'll be okay.
Daddy's just gonna go
learn a few
skills on how to be rough
and tough,
-and I can teach you, okay?
-Okay.
You gotta take care
of the other three.
-and take care of momma.
-[girl 1 sniffles]
Mr. Waddles,
you better protect Annsley
while I'm gone, okay?
-[Annsley chuckles]
-You understand?
-[duck shrieks]
-[Annsley chuckles]
[Tyler Covington] I'm gonna
miss my children a lot.
I mean, that's gonna be
That's gonna be the
hardest part for all of this.
At the end of the day,
my wife and my kids,
they may not be happy
with me leaving
but this is ultimately
for them.
Me leaving is my sacrifice.
-I love you.
-[Courtney] I love you.
They're gonna thank me one day
for this.
[trumpeting]
[Tree] I'm calling council
because I'm asking someone
to leave.
I'm not calling council
for a lot of topics.
[woman 1] Is this, like,
it needs to happen right now?
-[Tree] Yeah, we've
we've got--
-[indistinct chatter]
I didn't I still don't even
know who who who
you're asking to leave.
[Tree] Oh, I'm asking Narayah
to leave.
-[Tyler Milligan
speaks indistinctly]
-[Tree] Mmm-hmm.
[Milligan] Hey, I mean,
I don't know, maybe it's
none of my business
but I feel like,
what's the thought process?
[Tree] She has been causing
a great split
and divide and, like,
issues with every single
nearly, most people have had,
like, an issue at
one given point in time.
This is the tough things
about community.
[Milligan] Because, like,
I had a really good, like,
conversation with her.
-[Tree] Yeah, I know you
I saw that.
-[Milligan] I was like--
[Tree speaking]
These people
are extremely paranoid.
So, Patrick is not here.
Patrick has heavy influence
with this community.
With him gone
I am very curious to see
how things are gonna be done.
I called this council,
Narayah, 'cause I'm asking
you to leave.
I can't live with you anymore.
It's either the group or you.
[Vibe] I'm gonna second that.
The boiling point for me is,
uh, forced control.
She's controlling all of us
in this energetic way.
So, a newcomer,
that hasn't gotten a chance
to share their story,
or talk to the people
that have conflict with them,
your go-to
is to kick them out?
[Julia] There's been an
ongoing friction with Narayah.
Like, we are living together,
we are working together,
we are raising kids together.
Sometimes it doesn't work out
and this is our process.
Because we are leaderless,
because we are egalitarian,
we have to come to
a 100% of a resolution.
Narayah, would you prefer
to not do this on camera?
I've been open and honest
since the beginning and
I'm gonna continue to do so.
With or without cameras.
[Julia] It just feels like
you don't trust anyone here,
and so, then I don't trust you
and I don't really know
how to repair that.
[Swoop speaking]
-[Narayah] A 100%.
-Then you should leave because
[Swoop speaking]
I don't know you,
I don't have a problem
with you,
-but it seems like there are
several people here that do.
-[Narayah] Oh.
[Narayah] I appreciate that
and I recognize it
as something deeper
as an opportunity
to show the world
how to do conflict resolution
and not kick somebody out.
[Tree] No, that's what
you've gotta do
'cause we're living
with completely new people
we haven't even met before
and we're sharing
so much space with them
and the only defense we have
is to ask them to leave.
I know I'm feeling
[bleep] emotional.
That's for sure.
I hate seeing the people
that I love not getting along.
And then, also ganging up.
And I don't know what the
right way of doing anything,
but this isn't the right way.
[Narayah] I thought I was
gonna come here and
deal with something different.
This is what we're trying to
keep from happening, elitism.
But I'm not
going to back down.
Then what you're doing is
an outward show
that you do not care about
the health of this group
-[Narayah] I do care.
-you do not care about
the emotions of this group
-as a whole.
And you do not care
-[Narayah] Yes, I do.
about the stability
of this group, that you care
about yourself.
You came into a home
that you demanded to be seen,
heard and respected.
You did not see,
you did not hear
and you did not respect
these people who have invested
years of their lives
into this project,
are asking you to, please,
for the love of all humanity,
give us a break.
You've got to go.
[Milligan] They rip, like,
this young lady apart,
like, savagely.
This is a hell of a way
to start start this week.
I don't see a whole community
standing together
on this issue.
I see a a handful of people
with an issue.
"I can't work with you and",
because that sounds like
a personal problem to me.
It sounds like maybe
the person doesn't know how
to resolve conflict.
[Xans] I agree with Tom.
I haven't seen
any mediated conversations
between these individuals.
-I have not seen it.
-[Narayah] I've asked for it.
Tom, for [bleep] sake, dude,
it's too far gone for Narayah.
I feel like we need space.
Please speak up because
we haven't heard any of yous
until this moment,
so that's really
[bleep] annoying, you know.
It's like, I see it
as like breaking up
with, like, a toxic partner.
[Xans] This is sketch.
This is sketch as [bleep].
My thoughts are, like,
"Who's next?"
I gotta go. I'm out.
What I'm about to say
really hurts my heart a lot.
But people are not willing
to get over their issues
and that's on them
but the only way
to figure this out
is for you to sadly leave
'cause they're not gonna
get over it.
[Tom] I kind of feel
the same way as Jag,
is that, like,
people are really holding
their ground and, like,
yeah, I would just leave.
[Vibe] So, do you
how do you feel, Xans?
Do you feel
the same way, like,
are you the only one
blocking the consensus?
Um
I want better for the group.
I'm sorry but I don't think
that we can
do that with you here.
[Tree] I'm asking Narayah
to leave
in consent by ten seconds
of silence.
That's ten seconds of silence.
[Vibe] That's ten seconds.
The community is asking you
to leave.
Everyone has been
seen and heard.
Mark that in the universe.
I'm feeling really,
really sad
and drained.
She was one of my really,
really good friends.
The only real answer
to all of this
since communicating
with each other
and understanding each other
isn't gonna happen,
is just to, like, walk away
and let it go.
[Narayah] People will be
the way that they are.
I came into this
to show truth
and to help and assist
with whatever I could
to bring that light to things.
I'm sorry for the part
that I played in it.
I'm grateful
for the experience
no matter what.
And, um, if I died tomorrow
and the world saw the truth,
that's all that matters.
[Narayah speaking]
Nobody cares what you want.
[Milligan] Hey, Narayah,
can I help you?
[Narayah] Yes.
Everyone else can leave.
[Milligan] As far as
I can tell,
I don't see anything wrong
with Narayah.
But this whole entire
community has a problem
with her.
It's making me fairly nervous
that they kicked out someone
that was considered
an outsider
and I feel like
I'm in the same position.
This council has been
very revealing to me.
I got to see a glimpse
of how there might be
an inner circle.
If someone says something,
they're gonna agree to it.
Tree dug his heels in,
the rest of the community
followed suit.
Narayah's gone.
I don't want to believe
that this is a cult
but the way
they pushed her around,
I don't know anymore.
[Patrick] If we want to live
closely together
and rely on each other
we have to trust each other.
The major undoing
of Narayah was
she could not trust us.
More than any kind of anger,
harsh feelings towards her,
it's, like, a little bit
of sadness that, uh,
she must feel pretty alone
in this world, you know,
not trusting so much,
you know.
[producer speaking]
I, uh, went on a trip
with, uh, the neighbor
to go pick up a bunch of trees
from their nursery, uh,
in Illinois.
-Um, yeah.
-[producer speaking]
Yeah, yeah. It was
It was nice. [chuckles]
Um, yeah.
When all the chaos
was going down,
he wasn't even there
when they called the council
and I think that
that was purposeful.
I feel like it was planned
and that he didn't wanna
be there for it.
I think that there are
many people doing the bidding
for Patrick.
He wants things
the way that he wants them
and he wants others
to do them for him,
without people necessarily
even knowing they're doing
that for him.
Learning how a cult works
Like, I knew that they existed
because of history
and time but
to have experienced a cult
one-on-one
not recommended. [chuckles]
[Milligan] I just can't
turn off my brain right now.
I have more questions.
Things are not making sense.
This place is definitely
not what it seems.
At least, not to me.
Maybe it's just
I'm overthinking things
but these people
are so suspicious.
They're, I mean,
even as a prepper, like,
they are overboard paranoid.
And, um
I don't know, makes me wonder
why they're so careful
all the time.
Like, what are they trying
to hide?
[whispers] And I--
[indistinct chatter]
[whispers] That's Patrick.
[chuckles] I don't,
actually
I don't get nervous
that easily,
and for whatever reason
this place makes me actually
really nervous.
After everything
I just saw today
[gulps] whole new ball game.
These people
do make me nervous.
I am outnumbered and
I don't have any backup here.
Heather is the only person
that I know that I can trust.
[Patrick] We're gonna
burn this field
and it's gonna be
a lot of destruction.
But mostly, it's gonna
re-fertilize the soil
and give us space
for new things to grow.
All right, I'm lighting up
and it's going this way.
[man 1] Let it go. Stand back.
Stand back. Stand back!
-[woman 2] Get back, Bobby.
-[man 1] Stand back!
[Patrick] Hold this line
over here!
-Do not let the fire get over
to those trees over there.
-[woman 2] Got it.
[bleep]. [indistinct]
[man 2 yelling]
Help over here!
It's crossing!
It's crossed the line!
-[woman 3] You go
around the back.
-[woman 2] Water!
[Vibe] [bleep].
It's wild in the west.
[chuckles]
Good job, you guys.
[Tree] Yeah, it got scary
for a second.
We're all safe but, you know,
it could have ended badly.
Team Bad-Ass!
[in sing-song voice]
I'm outing my fertility
to the ground. Whoo!
[in normal voice] I guess
I should've drank more water.
[Covington] I'm in
northern Missouri,
middle of America,
kinda out in the middle
of nowhere.
I'm excited
to meet these folks and
see what all the hype's about.
A little nervous
at the same time.
I really don't know what
I'm expecting to walk into.
I'm not in that kind of shape
for long days of manual labor.
That's something
that I kind of fear that
I'm gonna have to get over
and adapt to very quickly.
I'm really worried about
leaving my comfortable bed.
I value my sleep and
be a little afraid
to go out into the wilderness.
I have never been
to the Ozarks.
I I don't know
what it's like.
Is there rattlesnakes,
is there Bigfoot, I mean,
I don't know.
This is a long walk.
Back is just
in horrible shape.
[breathing heavily]
That's it. [exhales]
I mean, definitely, I can't
I'm not gonna be able to
that's gonna be
[bleep].
Hate to sound
like a Debbie Downer but
if I try to walk
up that incline
I know I'm gonna be
in a world of hurt.
This might have been
a horrible idea.
[clears throat] I'm feeling
I feel a little embarrassed.
[phone ringing]
Well, you called me
at the right time.
[Courtney] Why?
I'm stuck
with all my damn luggage
having to walk up this hill.
I'm, like, 50 yards
but I don't think
I'm gonna make it.
[Annsley speaking]
I went for no reason, I guess.
All right, I love you.
I'll call you back
in a little bit.
-[Courtney] All right.
Love you.
-Bye.
What's up, partner?
[Patrick] How're you doing?
I've been better.
-Patrick.
-[Covington] Patrick. Tyler.
-Good to meet you, Tyler.
-[Covington] Nice to meet you,
Pat.
Would you mind giving me
a lift someway, somehow?
Uh
Somebody has a vehicle
that can get up that hill.
-Yeah, I appreciate it, buddy.
Means a lot.
-[Patrick] Yeah, no problem.
Well, he was nice.
He seems like he could
really use a ride, so
Okay, you want me to
drive down and get him?
-[Covington] I'm looking
for The Garden.
-[Swoop] Indeed.
-Can I catch a lift?
-You can.
-Tyler.
-Swoop.
-Nice to meet you.
-Likewise.
Let me help you
with the stuff.
[Covington] If you don't mind,
buddy.
I mean,
there's a lot of things
going through my mind.
I haven't seen
what the grounds look like.
-[Patrick groans]
-[door closes]
Is it up and down?
Is it really treacherous?
Is it dangerous?
Oh, my gosh.
I'm gonna be camping
in my tent,
sleeping at a 45 degree angle
because the structure
of the land.
How comfortable
is that [bleep]?
[groans softly]
Finally, we made it.
[Xans] Hey, baby,
how you doing?
-[Covington] Good,
how are you?
-[Xans] I'm Xans.
-Nice to meet you.
-Nice to meet you. Tyler.
-Hey, Tyler.
-How's it going?
Good. Welcome home.
-We're getting
the kitchen set up.
-Well
this boy likes to eat.
[Xans] We have six-bean chili,
taco
-Oh, hell yeah.
-Yeah?
-So, y'all eat pretty well.
-[Xans] We eat what the
dumpster provides.
-Okay.
-Yeah.
Okay.
As long as it's sanitary,
right?
-No?
-Much as we can be.
[Covington] Howdy,
howdy, howdy.
-[Jag] What's your name?
-Tyler.
Tyler from Tennessee.
-[Jag] I'm Jagalura.
-Jag-alura?
-Yeah. Or Jag.
That works. Okay.
-I'll just call you Jag.
[Covington] Smells amazing.
[Xans] So, Tyler, what are you
most excited about
for this project?
You know, I have four girls
back at home.
Their faces are always glued
to their phones.
They don't know
what this is like.
Well, you guys [chuckles]
you are already
ahead of the curve
if something
like that happens, right?
I'm just excited to be here
and, uh
see how y'all do things.
[Milligan] Day one, day two,
day three
uh, there was
so much happening.
It was it was a huge
adrenaline rush.
It was I didn't have time
to think about anything else,
and then
there's always that moment
when you, uh
when you lay down
at night and
you don't have anybody
to talk to. Like
She's she's my best friend
and I don't
that's not there anymore.
And that's hard. It's hard,
and I know it sounds stupid.
I'm supposed to be this, like,
big manly man, you know,
war veteran and
all that [bleep] and I
I I need my wife.
And it's hard to be
As of yesterday,
I haven't been able
to get a hold of her.
I'm used to climbing into bed
and being with my wife
and be able to unload.
Like, I'm okay being [bleep].
I don't care.
Like, I need my wife.
I don't wanna
end my time here, short.
This is very useful
for learning and teaching
and all that stuff.
But if I have one more night
like I had last night,
I'm not staying anymore.
Everybody has
their breaking point.
-[Xans] We're gonna get food
for community today.
-[man 3] Let's do it.
[Xans speaking]
Okay.
My parents are
gonna be so disappointed.
I'm joining a cult.
[woman 4] This is
my newest toy.
It'll definitely make someone
back up off you.
[man 3] What is it like
living in a tent?
[sighs]
[Milligan] I actually
have purpose here
and I hope I get to stay.
But it takes a long time
to get in the inner circle
with this group.
[Covington] If I don't conform
I am outcasted
and then you're saying
it's all my [bleep].
These people are saying
they're not a cult,
there's no hierarchy,
that's not the way it is.
So we're gonna throw
a sexy party?
[woman howling]
That's not sustainable.
You can't have
a perpetual party.
[Tree] This community,
sometimes, we're all together,
sometimes we're not.
You just said a community
where you and your wife
are the leaders
[Milligan]
Heather is bisexual.
If you wanted to experiment,
we're open.
That's a cult.
[Milligan whispering]
[in normal voice]
Someone needs to be able
to take charge.
You can't be a good man
unless you're capable
of violence.
Now that you're removed,
-would you say that
it's a cult?
-Definitely.
I really don't see
how getting me off the land
is going to end my journey.
[Tree screams]
You just [bleep] destroyed us.
I think that
it's just beginning.
