Insomniacs After School (2023) s01e03 Episode Script

Fomalhaut

1
[Ukegawa] You're
into stargazing now?
[Ganta] Yeah, beginners start
with just getting the moon
into focus, but it's
harder than I expected.
It was pretty difficult
to find with a telescope
and I couldn't get it
to focus right.
Wow.
So you're gonna take pictures?
Our advisor said we'd be
doing some astrophotography,
but I haven't had a chance.
Ah, maybe you can use
that camera you got
back in the fifth grade.
I don't know about that.
Man, that's crazy.
So you went and joined
the Astronomy Club?
-[Ganta] What's wrong with that?
-[Ukegawa] Nothing.
Cool if I swing by and watch
you in action sometime?
[Ganta] Dude, no.
Spare me.
Besides, aren't you busy
with student council?
[Ukegawa] I just want
to pop by for a bit.
[Ganta] No way!
You're gonna distract me.
[Ukegawa] Aw, man.
[opening theme]
[students] March!
One, two, one, two, one, two.
Hey, wait for me!
[lively music]
[ASTRONOMY CLUB]
[Isaki] It's hot today.
[Ganta] Here, you sign, too.
Mm!
[Twosie meows]
Oh.
[Isaki giggles]
We're all set!
Let's take it to our advisor.
[NURSE'S OFFICE]
Okay. Your application
has been accepted.
[both chuckle]
Since Isaki will
be juggling two clubs,
you'll have to be the
club president, Ganta.
Okay.
But since we only
have two members,
that's just a formality
and there's nothing
I actually have to do, right?
[Kurashiki sighs]
You'll have to attend the annual
budget meeting in September.
Most presidents are second-
or third-years.
They make a presentation
about their club activities
over the past year and then
propose a budget for approval
by the student council.
The results of that
meeting determine
how much funding each
club gets next March.
So, it's all about money?
That's a big part of it,
but you also have to show them
that you're engaged
in legitimate club activities,
or no more observatory.
A presentation on our
legitimate activities.
What activities should
we do anyways?
Beats me.
[audio boings]
[audio pops]
[Kurashiki huffs]
This is the only record left
of activities
done by the previous club.
[YUI SHIROMARU]
The Kuyo High
School Astronomy Club,
first prize winner
at the National High School
Astrophotography Contest-
[both gasp]
Taken by Yui Shiromaru.
I reached out to that alumni
and explained everything.
So, pay her a visit.
She'll be expecting you!
[train tracks clacking]
[Ganta] I'll ask Ukegawa
for some advice
on figuring out
the budget meeting.
What?
Why would he know?
Well, he's on
the student council.
He'll pull strings?
He doesn't have that much pull,
but maybe he can help me plan
a good strategy for
the budget meeting.
If they give us money,
then we can make the
observatory more comfortable.
I'll fill a tub
with some water and ice
to keep watermelons and
ice cream for snacking.
That'd be misappropriation
of funds.
[buzzer rings]
[TICKET DISPENSER]
[train hissing]
[announcer] Now arriving
at Wakuraoensen Station.
This is a local train
[Isaki groans, gasps]
-headed for Anamizu.
-Ganta, we're here!
[announcer] The next stop
is Tatsuruhama Station.
[WELCOME TO WAKURAONSEN]
Now, departing for Tatsuruhama.
[pleasant music]
[Isaki] So, this alumni, what
kind of shop do they work at?
Um, not sure.
I only have the business name
and address.
[Isaki giggles]
Is it a hot springs?
[Gantah laughs] I doubt it.
[pleasant music]
So, we just gotta go
straight the whole time?
-Yep.
-Nice, that's easy to remember!
[pleasant music continues]
[Isaki] Are we're almost there?
[Ganta] Not sure, I think so.
[pleasant music continues]
[footsteps pattering]
[music ends]
[Isaki] Rice paddies as
far as the eye can see.
[Ganta] Yep.
[birds squawking]
[Isaki stammers]
Rice paddies, utility poles!
That's all there is out here!
Nothing else!
Oh, crap!
Maybe we walked past it!
Let's head back.
[cars droning]
Is this it?
Seems like it.
It's not closed down?
It's said online they were
still in business, so, yeah.
[both groan]
[door creaking]
Oh.
[energetic electro music]
[buttons clicking]
[Isaki grunting]
[electro music continues]
So this place is
actually an arcade?
[Yui] Hey, you two kids
over there.
[both yelp softly]
Real gutsy of you
to hang out here after school.
Pretty sure that's
against the rules.
[both stammering]
Hmm?
Wait, are you two
from Kuyo High?
Oh, Kurashiki told me
you were coming.
Come on, Astronomy Club.
I'll tell you everything
you wanna know.
[OPEN FOR BUSINESS]
[footsteps pattering]
She seems kinda creepy.
Are you sure we
should follow her?
[Ganta groans]
[door clicks]
Hi, Rollo, I'm home.
You two come in.
[both] Thanks for having us.
[door closes]
Take a seat wherever.
[relaxing music]
[both gasp softly]
[Yui sighs]
Hmm?
[Yui screams]
[Ganta yelps softly]
[comical music]
[Yui] Well, what do
you wanna ask me?
Um, yeah, so, I'm the club
president, Ganta Nakami.
And I'm Isaki Magari.
[Ganta] We wanted to know
what kind of activities
an Astronomy Club does.
I don't know.
With group stuff,
I'm basically clueless.
The third-years left me as the
only member 'til graduation.
So, yeah, I was always alone.
[Ganta groans softly]
But that meant I got to
monopolize the observatory.
It was just like having my
own private room at school,
and it's where I spent
all my time.
Felt oddly comfortable
to be in there.
[Isaki chuckles]
Huh?
Is that your camera, Ganta?
[Ganta] Yeah, it is.
Let me see it.
This is a primo camera.
Geez, it's pitch-black.
I tried to take a picture
of some clouds on a
night with a full moon.
[Yui] Put it on a
low ISO setting
and adjusting the f-stop helps,
but learn how to focus first.
So, wait, I can take a good
picture if I know all that?
[Yui] Assuming you can remember.
What exactly does a
low ISO setting do?
And what's a f-stop?
Not so close!
[Isaki giggles]
-[Ganta] Please teach me!
-You gotta back off first!
Good grief.
[playful music]
Hm?
Hmm.
[Ganta grunts]
[grunts]
Uh, anyways, please help us!
Whether or not we can stay in
the observatory depends on it.
I'm getting hungry.
[water burbling]
[pasta sloshes]
[oil hisses]
[Rollo meows]
She really likes doing
things her own way.
More like she's totally
self-centered.
Collaboration is clearly
not her strength.
I bet she spent all her time
at school being by herself,
just playing on her phone
or sleeping at her desk
during recess.
[Ganta yelps]
And probably didn't have
a single friend in class either.
[Ganta grunts]
[Isaki] Oh.
You projected so hard
it blew up on your face.
Food's ready.
Eat.
[Isaki gasps]
It looks great!
Thanks for the meal.
Thanks for the meal!
[Ganta chomps]
[Ganta] It's delicious!
This place is great.
Is this where you live,
Ms. Shiromaru?
That's right.
I'm the manager here, after all.
[Isaki] You are?
That's awesome!
I guess. I'm surprised
that you two
would go through
so much trouble.
Why bother reviving
the peeper club?
Peeper club?
Oh, you didn't know?
You gotta practice how
to focus the telescope,
which means during the day,
you'll be looking at people
in the school yard
instead of stars.
[Isaki growls]
No, no way!
I'm not doing this to
be some kind of creep!
[Yui chomps]
[Yui sighs]
Listen, we need to
be heading home soon.
So, can you start teaching us?
You bet I can.
It's about the perfect time.
[bugs chirping]
[footsteps pattering]
It's a new moon tonight, so
stars should be easy to find.
[stand rattling]
All right, give the camera.
Oh, okay.
[Ganta] What is that thing
supposed to be for?
It's a lens hood.
Helps to block out
the excess light.
Step one, get focused.
Make sure to switch
the focus mode
from auto to manual.
After deciding which
star you wanna look at,
gradually just turn the
ring on the lens here
to adjust the focus.
Stop when you think the star
is at its smallest and sharpest.
[Isaki] Doesn't that
look about right?
[Ganta] Nah, a little more.
Oh, I did it!
Next, open up the settings page.
The f-stop here indicates
the amount of light
that's coming through the lens.
On this camera, it looks
like the lowest setting
for your lens is F2.8.
'Cause the sky is so dark,
you'll want the number
to be as low as possible,
which allows the greatest
amount of light to come through.
The ISO setting controls the
camera's sensitivity to light.
The higher the number, the
brighter the stars appear.
The moon is weak tonight,
5,000 should be fine.
Just remember that raising
the number too high
can end up with a picture full
of gritty-looking
crap like this.
You're still a beginner,
so don't stress too
much about composition.
Just frame the star you want
to photograph in the center.
[lively music]
Does this seem like
it's all lined up?
Hmm, looks good.
All that's left is
releasing the shutter.
Pressing the button directly
makes the camera shake.
So, it's best if you have
a remote shutter control,
but for now,
just use the self-timer.
The exposure time should be 20
seconds,
which means that once
you trigger the shutter,
it takes in light for a
full 20 seconds.
[shutter clicks]
[both gasp softly]
[bugs chirping]
[both exclaim in awe]
It's super pretty!
It turned out awesome!
[Isaki] Let's try
taking another one.
[Ganta] Okay.
Uh, so, we trigger the shutter
for 20 seconds and
[bright music]
[WAKURAONSEN STATION]
Thank you for all your help!
Can we come back again to
ask you more questions?
[Yui]
Well, I heard the observatory
was turned into a warehouse
for a long time after I left.
I don't wanna see it
end up like that again,
so I'll drop by occasionally.
[both gasp softly]
-[Isaki] Great!
-[Ganta] Great!
[bright music ending]
[ASTRONOMY / SPACE SCIENCE]
[EPISODE 3: FOMALHAUT]
[PISCIS AUSTRINUS]
[cicadas chirping]
[coach] On your marks!
[whistle blows]
[water sloshes]
[water splashing]
[water sloshing]
[water splashing]
[Isaki panting]
[Isaki grunts]
[water splashes]
[students] Thank you very much!
[footsteps pattering]
[Isaki yawning]
[Isaki yawns]
Oh.
Oh?
[yawning] Hello, Yui.
[Yui] Don't talk and yawn
at the same time.
Sorry, I'm having a
sudden yawn attack.
[zipper zipping]
[Kurashiki]
Good, everyone's here.
Then it's time for
our meeting to start.
Ooh, we got a tent?
I wanna go inside!
[Kurashiki] We'll start
with the club president.
Have you thought
of any activities
to be part of your presentation
at the budget meeting?
Let's hear what ideas
you've come up with.
Well, I actually did
some research on it,
and found out that there'll be
a Perseid meteor shower
in August.
So I'm thinking that we
could hold a viewing party
on the school's roof.
A viewing party?
You invite other people
to come and watch
the meteor shower.
Oh
I've never done one, though,
since I was always by myself.
I think advertising it to people
outside of the school
would be best.
You might get more participants.
Cool, then we're gonna
need posters.
"Coming this August,
the Perseid meteor shower
viewing party.
Please feel free to come
join us and have a good time!"
You'll need to recruit
some event personnel.
[Isaki giggles]
Ideas on who can help,
club president?
Hmm.
I figured you were lacking
in the friend department.
[Ganta]
Don't pretend you know me.
[Isaki] There's nothing
to worry about!
I'm sure that Ukegawa
will totally help us out!
And besides, I can gather
up some volunteers, too!
[Kurashiki] So, are you
willing to do this thing?
Hmm.
Yeah.
This is gonna be awesome!
All right, just one
last thing to cover.
There's going to be a contest
for starry night sky
photographs.
If you manage to win any
sort of prize,
then the school won't
have a problem
providing the club with funds.
There's no way
I'm ready for this.
I mean, I only
just started learning
how cameras work, remember?
I would only be
embarrassing myself.
A small price to pay, right?
Ah
Besides, there's no
reason to be nervous.
Oh?
You can always depend
on your mentor here.
Uh
Hmm.
A national contest.
[NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STARRY
NIGHT SKY PHOTOGRAPH CONTEST]
Clean up before you leave.
[Isaki screaming]
No, no, no, no, no!
Mentor!
[Ganta] What's this?
[Yui] A camping chair.
You're gonna need one for sure.
It's super easy to set up.
Also, get a tent
and sleeping bags.
Pick the most lightweight
ones you can find, okay?
Sometimes, the best place to
snap a photo is on a mountain,
which makes heavy
luggage a pain.
Is the subject of the
photo a judging criteria?
Hmm, it can be.
Generally speaking, you
score more brownie points
with photographs taken
in your local area.
So you're lucky to be
from Ishikawa Prefecture.
For example,
this place has been called
the "Salar de Uyuni" of Japan.
If you go on a day
with no waves,
you can get a beautiful picture
of sky reflected on the sea.
Oh, wow!
Our summer camp is in Chirihama.
Uh, wait, is that really true?
Didn't you hear our teacher
explain it during homeroom?
Well, that works out perfectly.
Go take a photo there.
[Ganta] Hmm.
But I don't know
if I'm good enough.
You can do it.
[Isaki giggles]
[Ganta] I'm returning
the key to the roof.
And here, our notebook.
Perfect, keep up the good work.
Seems like you'll be just fine
serving as club president.
I'm not very confident
about that,
but I'm determined to do
everything I can.
Have you been getting
any sleep lately?
[Ganta] A little bit.
Not really at home, though.
Just in the observatory.
[Kurashiki] I see.
[sighs] I guess even the fact
that you can't sleep
might carry some kind of
meaning to it, you know?
Meaning? You think so?
[bicycle gear clicking]
[Isaki] I'm gonna work on making
a poster for the viewing party,
so you're in charge
of the camera, okay?
[Ganta]
Things are gonna get busy.
They sure are,
but you look excited.
Yeah, I am.
After finding the observatory
and becoming friends
with you there,
we joined the astronomy club
and learned about pictures
you can only get at night.
Now, insomnia helps
to capture the stars.
That's kind of amazing.
It totally is!
[bugs chirping]
[CLOSED]
[NANAO CITY]
[footsteps pattering]
Like the forecast said.
[Rollo meowing]
[claws scraping]
[PANCAKE MIX]
[MILK]
[mixture sloshing]
Okay, Rollo, hold down the fort.
Oh.
Fine.
Be that way.
[calm music]
[motorbike whirring]
[bugs chirping]
[Yui sighs]
[bugs chirping]
[calm music continues]
[NANAO CASTLE RUINS]
[palms pat]
Forgive my trespass.
Hmm?
[shutter clicks]
[Yui groans]
[button clicking]
[shutter clicks]
Just right.
[lively music]
[batter sizzling]
[shutter clicks]
[batter sizzling]
[lively music continues]
Now, I feast.
[lively music continues]
[Yui chomps]
[Yui giggles]
[shutter clicks]
[watch beeps]
Huh?
[shutter clicks]
[Yui gasps softly]
Stunning, isn't it?
But I guess you really
can't tell, huh, Rollo?
Too bad nobody's around
to see this.
Huh?
[paw smacking]
Hmm.
[paw smacking]
[ASTRONOMY CLUB:
IT WAS GREAT TO MEET YOU!]
[ONE PICTURE SELECTED]
They're high-schoolers.
It's so late!
What am I thinking?
[Yui breathing heavily]
[paw steps pattering]
[Rollo thumps]
[phone pops]
Oh.
I actually sent it!
[sharp inhale]
I sent the picture I took in the
middle of the freaking night!
[READ]
[Yui screams]
[phone notification pops]
Hmm?
[Isaki] Super pretty!
[Ganta] That's incredible!
The landscape framed
against the starry sky
makes them both stand out.
How do you even
take a picture like that?
Seriously amazing!
Are you shooting pics right now?
[Yui] There's no better time for
taking pictures
of the night sky.
There's a half moon
and hardly any clouds.
So, after I finished work,
I came to a spot near
the Nanao Castle ruins.
[Isaki gasps]
Those two are total
night owls, I swear.
[serene music ending]
[ending theme]
