Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix (2026) s01e03 Episode Script

Episode 3

So, yesterday, Zion picked up
his T-shirt and his badge.
[Zion] This is what I'm gonna be
running a marathon in.
As you can see, "Twins Trust".
"We support twins."
We're gonna raise awareness.
And when we look back…
And our girls can obviously look back
and see what I've done…
[Jesy] They've literally got
the most amazing dad.
[producer] Do you ever feel scared?
Always, yeah.
I'm always scared.
I don't know if the girls
are gonna be okay.
I don't know if Jes will be okay.
So much anxiety, so much fear, but…
I try and never let fear be my master.
But when you've been told
to prepare for the worst,
it's terrifying.
[hospital monitor beeping]
So, I'm currently having a CCG,
and this basically
gives you a better indication
of how your babies are doing
right here right now.
The monitors have to stay on
exactly where they are,
but they keep trying to kick 'em off.
[muffled sounds over monitor]
-[Zion] Bloody hell.
-[Jesy] That sound is them moving.
[Jan] I'm just frightened
something could go wrong.
'Cause she keeps saying to me,
"If something happens, Mum,
I don't know what I'd be like."
"I don't think I could cope with it."
She goes, "I've got so close to them now.
I just don't know what I'd be like".
So that really scares me
that something could go wrong.
There's a big chance. She's high-risk.
So there is a big chance
something could go wrong,
but I just gotta keep praying,
and hope for the best.
Hey, guys.
So, we just had a scan.
It hasn't been the greatest news.
Basically, two days ago,
I started feeling
coming-and-going pains in my belly.
And then the next morning, I woke up,
and I felt a bit of water just come out.
-Oh, my God. This is horrendous. Okay.
-[Zion] You'll be all right, my baby.
[Jesy] I could go into labour…
Please don't come out.
…within the next few days.
We're 27 weeks in two days,
so we've not even hit our milestone of…
-Twenty-eight.
-…twenty-eight weeks.
The survival rate
under 28 weeks is not great.
-[nurse] Right. Ready?
-Yeah.
Think my belly's going really tight again.
Is it?
Just cried all day.
One minute, I feel positive,
then we get shit news.
Then we get good news,
then we get shit news. And it's just…
It never ends.
[groans] I just need them to stay in.
[Zion] Jesy's been through so much.
She's been at breaking point, literally,
and she's always come out fighting.
But I'm here to fight with her.
I'm gonna be strong for her too.
[phone ringing]
Hey, my baby.
-[Jesy] Hey, baby. You okay?
-Yeah, you?
I'm all right.
I just don't like it when you're not here.
I get in a panic.
Have any of the midwives
come and seen you or anything?
No… Well, yeah. But I've just
been doing the normal, usual check-ups.
I'm just praying
that we make it past 28 weeks.
I just feel like
I'm in a constant state of fear.
Twenty-eight weeks is coming.
We will get past that.
Whatever happens, they'll be fine.
You'll be fine. We'll be fine.
And that's just how we have to think.
Yeah.
I just don't want you to be too long
'cause I just keep thinking,
if they come and you're not here…
No, no.
Literally, I'll be at my mum's
for about an hour, max,
and then just straight back.
Okay.
[birdsong]
-[knock on door]
-[door opening]
-[Zion's mother] Hello, Zi. You okay?
-[Zion] Yeah.
-You look well.
-Good to see you. Do I?
-How is it in the hospital?
-I've been living in the hospital.
-I don't know how I look well.
-[laughs]
Is it? How is it there though?
It's all right. It's not bad.
-Is it?
-Yeah.
What's the update now?
So Dr Ruwan called Jes,
and he's basically said
that only if there's a significant
improvement in the cervix…
-Yeah?
-…will he let her go home.
At least she's in safe hands.
-Yeah, exactly. Yeah.
-You know what I mean?
-You wanna make tea?
-Yeah.
-Okay.
-Stressful, innit?
-What is stressful?
-The situation.
What is it that is making…
-Should I be honest?
-Yeah, be honest.
-My role with Jes is to always be strong.
-Mm-hmm.
[Zion] But I feel like…
I feel the pressure. I feel the tension.
And even though, day to day, I'm like…
And when I'm not with you,
I would never feel like this.
I would never even say it.
I will never tell Jes I feel stressed.
Just because of how
that will make her feel.
Just take it easy.
Remain positive
like I've always said to you and Jesy.
You must remain positive,
and just have the faith
that everything is okay, honestly.
[Zion's mother]
I was a single mum looking after him.
He just looked at it
like he had to be the man.
He just grew more than his age.
'Cause like I said,
there was no father there.
[Zion] Not having a dad in my life
definitely gives me so much,
I guess, motivation
to be that father figure I never had.
-Okay. It is well, okay?
-Yeah.
-Gotta be strong, yeah?
-Yeah.
Everything good, yeah?
[Jesy] It's been really hard for me.
But the reason I'm surviving
is 'cause I'm with Zion, who is my home.
I don't really know how to explain it
other than that I just feel safe.
[Jade] If you're with the right person,
then you'll feel like
you can accomplish anything.
And I think she's very blessed
in that sense.
'Cause they're best friends.
[Jan] In the beginning,
I kept saying to Jesy, "He's not for you.
He's too young. He's not for you."
But yeah… But does that go that way?
Shit…
It's all right twisting it round,
but then it's upside down.
Yours is up that way though. Oh!
-Where's the picture? No.
-[Zion] Did I do it the wrong way?
[laughs]
[Jan] And I feel horrible now.
Like, he has proved hisself,
just one billion percent.
Does the screw
go on the outside or the inside?
This goes into this hole here.
Yeah, sorry.
I understand what you're saying.
Yeah, you're absolutely right.
He's had such a positive
calmness on her life.
[both cheering]
[Jan] I think them living
in hospital together all this time,
and I say,
"You've not had one little row?"
She says,
"No. We just laugh all the time."
I think they've definitely found
their soulmate in each other.
[laughing]
-[knock on door]
-[door opening]
-[Zion] Hey!
-Hey!
Happy 28th!
[all cheering, laughing]
You have to go like that now.
I really do.
[Jesy] When you hit 28 weeks,
the survival rate shoots up.
I think it's 40% more
that it goes up of them surviving.
-[cheering] Oh, my gosh…
-[cheering]
Eight weeks ago, they potentially
were not even gonna be alive.
-Say hello!
-[friend] Hi!
Hello!
Your best friends are in there.
Hi! They just kicked.
-Did they?
-Yeah.
It's overwhelming, it's like…
But in the best way possible.
Whenever I hit a big milestone,
then my brain goes, "32".
It's like I can't
just appreciate what it is.
[friend] Yeah, no, you can.
-Just take a moment, feel it, be grateful.
-No, I know.
And then you will.
You will get to the next one.
-You've hit every other milestone.
-Yeah. Exactly.
Now I'm allowed to venture out a bit more,
which is just so nice.
-[Jesy] Sometimes it's yellow.
-[Zion] Yeah?
Then it goes green.
Then it's, like, a bit of everything.
But they stink.
To the point where I remember when
my mum was doing Georgie's nappy,
and I was gagging.
[producer] Have either of you
changed a nappy before?
-[Jesy] No. Never in my life.
-No.
[Zion] It's like changing a light bulb.
[Jesy]
You don't know how to change a light bulb.
I don't, but as soon as I do,
I'll know, innit? Simple.
[laughing]
Bloody hell.
Do I think they're prepared?
No. No, not at all.
I feel like they're just
basically winging it.
The fact that a bedroom isn't even done.
And I think most families would be
probably a hell of a lot more prepared
by this point.
Normally there's one
who is ready and prepared.
-You okay?
-Yeah.
And I think they're just both a bit like,
"Yeah, we'll see what happens."
[Jesy] I don't even know where to start.
[gasps] Dummies!
Oh, my God, bottles. What?
How do you even know what bottle to get?
There's so much stuff.
When you hit the industry…
You do. You have everyone
do everything for you.
Like, you don't really become an adult.
And I think that's why I say
I still feel like a child now.
The fact that I'm having a baby,
and I still feel like a child
is a bit of a surreal experience.
That's why we used to call her Diva Debs,
'cause she'd get, you know,
everything handed on a plate.
You've got someone
to ask for whatever you want.
-For the hair, yeah.
-When do you start buying that?
When do you start buying shampoo
and conditioner for your baby?
What's that, five microwave
sterilizing bags? What's that for?
What's that though?
Do we need this?
What is it?
-Just get it in case.
-Do I need this?
No.
This is so embarrassing to say this,
but I don't know how to wash clothes.
I still don't know how to do my washing.
What is that?
"Boobie mask". Bloody hell.
I need a boobie mask.
Mine have gone to shit.
They need all the love they can get.
I think I'm gonna have
a bit of a shock to the system
when I'm looking after babies
and also doing
all their washing and all that stuff.
Legs come through here.
And now hold her.
Right. [laughing]
Only thing about the industry
that makes you have to grow up
is obviously the scrutiny
and all the pressure that comes with that,
but in terms of actually doing things
that you would normally have to do
going from a teenager to an adult,
you don't learn
how to do any of that stuff
because I was never home.
[producer] How old were you
when you first left home?
Um, the first time I left home
was when we won X Factor, so…
And that was crazy because I lived at home
with my mum my whole life,
and then, we were literally like,
"Right, well, now you've all gotta get
your own places now, now you need to…"
We weren't allowed to live at home
with our parents, so…
How old was I? I would have been 20.
I don't think people realise
what comes with fame.
The night they won, they said,
"All right. Come back and see 'em."
I never get to see ya.
And it was five minutes, and they said,
"Sorry. We gotta take 'em now."
And I remember
Leigh-Ann's mum started crying,
and said, "We've lost 'em.
We've lost our babies. They've gone."
And it literally was.
They were just taken.
And then management and everything.
Their whole life is planned out.
We've not had a chance to celebrate,
but we're just loving
every single minute of it.
Little Mix! Little Mix!
Little Mix are the girl band

[crowd chanting] Little Mix! Little Mix!
After X Factor, for me,
was when it was actual reality
of what our life was gonna be like.
It was non-stop.
[Jade Thirlwall] At the minute,
we don't even know what's going on.
We've been thrown in this different world,

[Jesy] Fan events, radio.
This week's number one is Little Mix.

Here they are with the UK's
number one song, "Wings".
Don't matter if I fall from the sky ♪
[Jesy] When "Wings" went to number one,
the song we'd written ourselves,
that was just nuts…
Crazy to me.
[Little Mix] Number one!
[Jesy] Not so long ago, I was a barmaid,
and now we'd turn up to our signings…
I promise you, it sounds ridiculous,
it was like Justin Bieber had turned up.
It was insane.
Joining me in the studio right now,
it's Little Mix. Hello.
-[Jesy] Hey!
-[Perrie] Hi!
[Jesy]
Once we got number one with "Wings",
we just then expected for all our songs
to go to number one. Got a bit cocky.
We did "Cannonball" that got number one,
then "Wings" went number one.
And then we had the next one,
which was "DNA".
We were like,
"It's gonna go to number one."
We are getting closer and closer
to your number one, who's got it?
The only place you're gonna
find out officially is right here.
It was actually out of us and One
Direction of who was gonna get number one.
Who is officially number one on Sunday,
the 18th of November, 2012? Well…
-It's One Direction!
-[One Direction] Yeah!

[Jesy] We were stuck.
We couldn't get in the charts.
We still had a huge fan base.
But back then, I feel like labels
didn't really care about that.
They cared more about your chart success.
There was definitely a period
where we were gonna get dropped,
which was really scary.
It's been a couple of years
since you were last on the show.
-What have you been up to?
-We've been busy bees.
We wrote this whole album,
and we went to the label to play it,
and they were like,
"This is basically a pile of shit."
We went away for a year,
we wrote an album,
we wasn't happy with it,
so we scrapped the whole album.
Really? The whole album? How shit was it?
[audience laughing]
We were like, "Oh, no."
And I just remember being like,
"That's it, now we're fucked."
What are we gonna do?
When I saw her a year or two in,
I really felt like,
"Why isn't she just happy that
she's doing all these exciting things?
Instead, she's just so sad."
She was so different.
It was like the anxiety
used to ooze off of her.
She wasn't as shiny anymore.
[stammers]
She was just really, really stressed.
It was a non-stop battle.
Like a constant battle in her mind.
She just couldn't take
any more of the trolls and the press,
and just the disgusting things they'd say.
She'd literally tear herself apart.
Every single headline hurts her.
I just felt like
I could never get away from it.

Usually, if your kids are in trouble,
or they get in trouble at school
or whatever, you can protect them.
But this, there's nothing
I can do about it.
[photographer] Jesy!
[Jan] That's quite frightening,
really, for a parent.
[Jade] It's horrible when you think of it,
'cause it's like,
you've got everything
you thought you wanted,
but it just stripped her whole character
and her whole being.
[crowd screaming]
[Jesy] And at that time, One Direction
had a premiere for their movie…
and I just didn't want to go to a premiere
'cause I just felt so sad.
I felt really down.
I got really upset and I said,
"I'm really sorry, I don't wanna go.
I'm not gonna go."
I just wanted to go home
and be with my mum.
'Cause I just was sad.
And I got in the car, and there
was two paparazzi chasing me in a car,
and I remember being
on the phone to my mum, crying,
being like, "I can't do this anymore.
I literally can't do it."
She was like, "I can understand
if I'd done something called for,
all I've ever done is worked hard
to make other people happy,
I can't understand why people
just constantly wanna be just so mean."
She just spiralled really quickly
into a place where it didn't feel like
any of us could help her.
She had gotten to a point, I guess,
where for her, there was no turning back.
And then that's when I did it.
It just all got too much for me.
[producer] So did someone find you?
How did--
It was my ex.
My ex was with me at the time.
And then an ambulance came, and yeah.
Nobody wants somebody they love
to feel that way.
They said to me,
"Do you wanna go see a therapist?
Maybe try taking antidepressants?"
But that was not the cure for me.
The first time she tried to take her life,
I'd just think, "How did I not see that?
How did I not know that?"
That that had got that far.
But I think sometimes people
just carry on as normal, don't they?
If they're gonna do something like that,
they don't want you to know.
-[crew member] And rolling.
-Rolling!
-We're rolling.

We're backstage
