So, it was huge. And I was ready for it.
[reporter] The event is expected
to be sold out in just seven hours.
[Kylie] So, life was…
[laughing] It was good.
But I am a fatalist.
Somewhere out there,
they're looking down saying,
"This is the bit where
she thinks she's got it together,
and it's all going to go pear-shaped."

[Kylie] But I was really tired.
I remember…
I don't know, like, just putting
my head down a bit more often.

[Kylie] And there was not
a lot of me anyway.
I was pretty tiny,
but I was like a little bit tinier.
[director] How are you feeling?
I can't actually speak just yet. Sorry.

[Kylie] I kept saying,
"Maybe I'm too old for this."
[calming music playing]
But I was ill,
and I didn't know I was ill.
It's cancer we're talking about.
I don't even think I said the word.
Yeah.
But at the time, I was on a world tour.
And I was due on stage
in two or three days.
So, I had to have
a pretty good reason not to turn up.
[camera shutters click]
[photographer] Two.
[Kylie] But then I had a check in London,
to check a lump
and was told,
"It's fine."
[dramatic music playing]
And, let's just put it this way,
by the time I got to Australia,
it wasn't fine.
[camera shutters clicking]
I went for a screening.
[shutters snapping]
And a few biopsies later,
they told me the news.
I just kind of fell into a chair
and then left in a total daze.
[camera shutters clicking]
What's happened?
What does that mean?
It's like the Earth's on a different axis
or, like, "Where's reality gone?"
Nothing felt real,
and yet it couldn't be more real.
[applause]
Did you and Kylie argue
when you were younger?
Of course.
[both laugh]
Sisters.
[audience laughing]
I was in London.
My parents phoned me.
They said, "Look, we didn't want
to do this on the phone,
but we need to let you know, um,
Kylie's not well."
"And you've got pretty much
24 hours to get back to Australia
before the news is going to hit."
But it's a 26-hour flight away.
[Kylie] There's the one thing
that's me and my family,
but the second thing is this news.
What do we say, and what do we do?
Because if we said it, that was it.
[George] We've got the headlines.
[Kylie] It would be all over the news.
-"The government sets out its agenda."
-Yeah. That's right.
And I really needed stillness
to try and compute what's happening.
But my entire crew were making the stage
and waiting for me.
So,
obviously, the tour was canceled.
[dramatic music playing]
[Alagiah] At six o'clock,
the pop singer Kylie Minogue
has been diagnosed
with the early stages of breast cancer.
The 36-year-old star
has postponed her world tour.
[newscaster 1] The singer Kylie Minogue
has breast cancer.
[newscaster 2] …with breast cancer.
[overlapping voices]
[newscaster 3] Dannii flew out
of London today to be with her sister.
[camera shutters clicking]
[Dannii] Somebody said,
"There's a film crew here
trying to get an interview with you."
[rapid-fire shutter clicking]
And I said, "I haven't spoken
to my sister yet."
And my head was just… I'm jet-lagged.
And then I'm thinking, "Oh, shit."
"If this is what's happening here…"
[dramatic music playing]
[reporter 1] The Minogue family
have been reunited at the family home
for one of the most difficult days
they've faced.
[cameras clicking]
[Dannii] Intrusion
at a level
that none of us had experienced.
We're just wondering
if there's any comment on reports
that Kylie's back in Melbourne.
[reporter 2] In normal times,
news of her disease
would have been released
several weeks later.
But because there were concerts
due to start here,
they've had to release the details
of her illness right away.
[man] How's Kylie doing this morning?
[reporter 2] Everybody
is very hungry for news.
So, we very much are
at the ground floor of this disease,
almost as part of the family.
[camera shutters clicking]
We're going,
"Oh my God, the poor neighbors."
[man] Do you know Kylie?
Do you know how she's feeling?
Yeah, I'm sure she'll be fine.
[Dannii] The worst point was,
Dad needed to go
for a walk around the block with the dog.
[laughing] The dog needed to go
for a walk around the block.
He couldn't get out of the gate.

Nothing was healthy in any way.
And it really,
really made me angry.
[dramatic music playing]
[reporter 3] And there are reports that
she will be going into hospital today.
[Raworth] Do we know where
she's going to be treated?
[reporter 4] It's understood
the operation to remove the lump
will take place at Cabrini Hospital,
where security has been increased.
[Kylie] Medical staff had been offered
a serious amount of money to take photos.
And I was feeling in the depths of…
absolute uncertainty.
And that was just the beginning.
[reporter 5] Kylie Minogue
returned home late this afternoon,
huddled on the back seat.
[Kylie] And I was so scared
of what was ahead of me.
But, thankfully, I had my family.
It's so hypnotizing, isn't it?
[Carol] Whoa, that's cool.
They were like, "What did they say?"
"Nothing. They were just staring at me."
No matter what happens,
I know my brother, sister, and my mum
and dad will always be there for me.

So, how have you found
the last few days of
reflecting with people staring at you?
How's that been?

We have never done
anything like this before.

with me for all my early years.
And my mum's just
running away from the camera
because she doesn't want

Mum's pretty much seen it all.

That was hilarious.

And you'd forgotten you'd met them,

And she's going, "Who is that?"

You know, she's definitely
rock and roll enough.

She's a bit shy.

So, there I was just weeping.

wherever she's going to be treated,
she would have to stay there
for several months.
[Kylie] I remember saying to my parents,
"I can't stay here."
"I want to do my chemotherapy in Paris."
But my dad really didn't want me to go.
Like, I can only imagine,
as a parent, your instinct to…
want to protect your child.
Especially in that moment.
But I said, "I've just-- I've got to go."
And that was really hard.
I will try ♪
To fix you ♪
But my mum came with me.
So, there's someone keeping an eye on me.
["Fix You" continues playing]
[camera shutters clicking]
And that was such a blessing…
because I needed her now more than ever.
-[song ends]
-[audience cheering]
[doctor] So, here we can see the cancer,
which you can't see on the normal image.
Here we can see
the spread to the lymph nodes.
And these…
[Kylie] I was in and out of hospital.
[doctor] We can do
a local or wide excision.
[Kylie] Chemotherapy.
[doctor] Simple or radical.
[Kylie] Radiotherapy.
And facing a long journey.
[somber music playing]
And I'd been so self-conscious
about losing my hair.
And so, first, I cut it.
And it's just like you hear about.
Clumps. There's no other way to say it.
Clumps come out.
So, I buzz-cut the whole thing.
How did I feel?
That was the least of my worries
at that point in time.
[camera shutters clicking]
I remember the pain.
Just to get down the street
was a real achievement.
I felt removed from my body.
Removed from the world.
And yeah, the mind goes
to really dark places.
The chemotherapy was so hard.
[camera shutters clicking]
Physically.
Mentally.
And…
You've met my sister. She's tiny.
I remembered Mum calling me.
She's like, "We're in ICU again."
"She can't feel her fingers.
I'm not allowed to go in the room."
[camera shutters clicking]
We didn't know
if she's ever going to be well again.
[somber music continues]
[voices speaking faintly]
[camera shutters clicking]
It was that bad.
Like, "Is she going to live through this?"
Hi there, I'm…
Ah! Take two.
[director] You're mentioning your single,
so say, "Hi, I'm Dannii Minogue, this is…"
[Dannii] At the time…
Yep, okay.
…I was working in London.

So, I could just pop over
and get to see her.
And it would give Mum
the break she needed for her sanity.
I remember saying,
"If I could chop off one of my arms now,
and this would all go away, I would."
I would.

I just felt so helpless.
Where are you up to today?
There was nothing I could do for her.
Done one full run-through.
We won't do a full one now,
but we'll do a little bit.

I thought, "I'm not finished."

And the day that I might have one eyelash,
would be like, "Wow."
Or the day I would put
a little bit of makeup on,
it was, like, a big-- A big deal.

But it was so thrilling.

Well, I'm happy to be here.
I see things differently.
I don't have strength.
I don't have stamina.
I don't have everything
that I took for granted before.
And I'm still going through it.
It's not like,
"Hey, it's all over, and I'm--"
-[Cat] It doesn't stop like that.
-No, it doesn't.
I still have treatments.
I didn't write much about my experience.
Maybe in my life now, I would.
But I certainly didn't feel like this
is the time to do an entire album about
what I've been through.
It was a bit too close. Let's see.
Was it a conscious decision by you
that marriage and babies come later?
Mm, no. No, I've just…
I've just rolled along.
Oh, here we go. Here we go. Ugh.
-Huh.

Um, I didn't even think we'd get to there.
There's-- There's so much more
to cancer than just,
"You had it,
you got through it, and you're fine."
Or, "You're fine for now."
Um…
I was 36 when I got my diagnosis,

You need to be thinking about
children.
So, I did try.
I even postponed my chemotherapy to try.
Um, which was quite scary at the time
because I just wanted--
You just want it-- You want it out, gone.
I want to feel
safe.
I don't want this.
Um…
But yeah, I did try a few times with IVF.
Always with such a thread of hope.

But I couldn't not try.
[Dannii] She's just amazing with kids.
She's always been good with kids.
[all cheering]
Just naturally…
One.
[Dannii] …incredible.
Two. Two.
One. Two. Good.
I know I'll have children.
I know that much.
I wouldn't have just one.
-I'd definitely have more.
-[Philip] Right. Okay.
[Dannii] She's amazing with her nephews.

I never saw myself being a parent,
and she always did.
And that is…
It's heartbreaking.

[Kylie] I did try IVF,
like, a number of times.
If it had happened,
it would have been just shy of a miracle.
But it didn't work out that way.
So,
this was, like, a letter to
what might've been.
"Distant child, my flower,
are you blowing in the breeze?"

"Wrapped in a blanket of hope,
asleep in a bed of dreams."

and it's all going to go pear-shaped."

I remember…
I don't know, like, just putting
my head down a bit more often.

a lot of me anyway.
I was pretty tiny,
but I was like a little bit tinier.

I can't actually speak just yet. Sorry.

"Maybe I'm too old for this."

But I was ill,
and I didn't know I was ill.
It's cancer we're talking about.
I don't even think I said the word.
Yeah.
But at the time, I was on a world tour.
And I was due on stage
in two or three days.
So, I had to have
a pretty good reason not to turn up.
[camera shutters click]
[photographer] Two.
[Kylie] But then I had a check in London,
to check a lump
and was told,
"It's fine."
[dramatic music playing]
And, let's just put it this way,
by the time I got to Australia,
it wasn't fine.
[camera shutters clicking]
I went for a screening.
[shutters snapping]
And a few biopsies later,
they told me the news.
I just kind of fell into a chair
and then left in a total daze.
[camera shutters clicking]
What's happened?
What does that mean?
It's like the Earth's on a different axis
or, like, "Where's reality gone?"
Nothing felt real,
and yet it couldn't be more real.
[applause]
Did you and Kylie argue
when you were younger?
Of course.
[both laugh]
Sisters.
[audience laughing]
I was in London.
My parents phoned me.
They said, "Look, we didn't want
to do this on the phone,
but we need to let you know, um,
Kylie's not well."
"And you've got pretty much
24 hours to get back to Australia
before the news is going to hit."
But it's a 26-hour flight away.
[Kylie] There's the one thing
that's me and my family,
but the second thing is this news.
What do we say, and what do we do?
Because if we said it, that was it.
[George] We've got the headlines.
[Kylie] It would be all over the news.
-"The government sets out its agenda."
-Yeah. That's right.
And I really needed stillness
to try and compute what's happening.
But my entire crew were making the stage
and waiting for me.
So,
obviously, the tour was canceled.

the pop singer Kylie Minogue
has been diagnosed
with the early stages of breast cancer.
The 36-year-old star
has postponed her world tour.

has breast cancer.

of London today to be with her sister.

And my head was just… I'm jet-lagged.
And then I'm thinking, "Oh, shit."

have been reunited at the family home
for one of the most difficult days
they've faced.

[Dannii] Intrusion
at a level
that none of us had experienced.
We're just wondering
if there's any comment on reports
that Kylie's back in Melbourne.

news of her disease
would have been released
several weeks later.
But because there were concerts
due to start here,
they've had to release the details
of her illness right away.

at the ground floor of this disease,
almost as part of the family.

And it really,
really made me angry.

she will be going into hospital today.

the operation to remove the lump
will take place at Cabrini Hospital,
where security has been increased.
[Kylie] Medical staff had been offered
a serious amount of money to take photos.
And I was feeling in the depths of…
absolute uncertainty.
And that was just the beginning.

returned home late this afternoon,
huddled on the back seat.
[Kylie] And I was so scared
of what was ahead of me.
But, thankfully, I had my family.
It's so hypnotizing, isn't it?

No matter what happens,
I know my brother, sister, and my mum
and dad will always be there for me.

wherever she's going to be treated,
she would have to stay there
for several months.
[Kylie] I remember saying to my parents,
"I can't stay here."
"I want to do my chemotherapy in Paris."
But my dad really didn't want me to go.
Like, I can only imagine,
as a parent, your instinct to…
want to protect your child.
Especially in that moment.
But I said, "I've just-- I've got to go."
And that was really hard.
I will try ♪
To fix you ♪
But my mum came with me.
So, there's someone keeping an eye on me.

And that was such a blessing…
because I needed her now more than ever.
-[song ends]

[doctor] So, here we can see the cancer,
which you can't see on the normal image.
Here we can see
the spread to the lymph nodes.
And these…
[Kylie] I was in and out of hospital.
[doctor] We can do
a local or wide excision.
[Kylie] Chemotherapy.
[doctor] Simple or radical.
[Kylie] Radiotherapy.
And facing a long journey.
[somber music playing]
And I'd been so self-conscious
about losing my hair.
And so, first, I cut it.
And it's just like you hear about.
Clumps. There's no other way to say it.
Clumps come out.
So, I buzz-cut the whole thing.
How did I feel?
That was the least of my worries
at that point in time.
[camera shutters clicking]
I remember the pain.
Just to get down the street
was a real achievement.
I felt removed from my body.
Removed from the world.
And yeah, the mind goes
to really dark places.
The chemotherapy was so hard.
[camera shutters clicking]
Physically.
Mentally.
And…
You've met my sister. She's tiny.
I remembered Mum calling me.
She's like, "We're in ICU again."
"She can't feel her fingers.
I'm not allowed to go in the room."
[camera shutters clicking]
We didn't know
if she's ever going to be well again.
[somber music continues]
[voices speaking faintly]
[camera shutters clicking]
It was that bad.
Like, "Is she going to live through this?"

…I was working in London.

There was nothing I could do for her.

I see things differently.
I don't have strength.
I don't have stamina.
I don't have everything
that I took for granted before.
And I'm still going through it.

-No, it doesn't.
I still have treatments.
I didn't write much about my experience.
Maybe in my life now, I would.
But I certainly didn't feel like this
is the time to do an entire album about
what I've been through.
It was a bit too close. Let's see.
Was it a conscious decision by you
that marriage and babies come later?
Mm, no. No, I've just…
I've just rolled along.
Oh, here we go. Here we go. Ugh.

Um, I didn't even think we'd get to there.
There's-- There's so much more
to cancer than just,
"You had it,
you got through it, and you're fine."
Or, "You're fine for now."

I was 36 when I got my diagnosis,
so already, it's-- You--
You need to be thinking about
children.
So, I did try.
I even postponed my chemotherapy to try.
Um, which was quite scary at the time
because I just wanted--
You just want it-- You want it out, gone.
I want to feel
safe.
I don't want this.
Um…
But yeah, I did try a few times with IVF.
Always with such a thread of hope.

But I couldn't not try.
[Dannii] She's just amazing with kids.
She's always been good with kids.

Just naturally…
One.
[Dannii] …incredible.

I know I'll have children.
I know that much.
I wouldn't have just one.
-I'd definitely have more.

[Dannii] She's amazing with her nephews.

I never saw myself being a parent,
and she always did.
And that is…
It's heartbreaking.

[Kylie] I did try IVF,
like, a number of times.
If it had happened,
it would have been just shy of a miracle.
But it didn't work out that way.
So,
this was, like, a letter to
what might've been.
"Distant child, my flower,

"Wrapped in a blanket of hope,
asleep in a bed of dreams."
"My step into eternity
is not what it might've been."

and realistic at the same time.

Having had cancer, I said to my manager,

I just thought that that might be it.

I knew I'd come over all emotional.

[Kylie] It's my first day back at school.
Hi. I'll say hello individually.
[Dannii] People had tickets
to her music show.
So, we'd offered they could,
you know, hand their tickets back in,
and they would reimburse them, and…
nobody did.

And then you go back to this.
[Kylie] I heard that people
held onto their tickets.
"We're here, when you're ready
to come back, we're here."
But I wasn't as strong. I wasn't as fit.
They would have been concerned.
"Are you ready? Can you handle it?"
So, I had a mountain to climb,
but I didn't fancy hanging around
at the bottom of the mountain.

I was like,
"When can we fire up this tour again?"
No, no, you do this one.
[Dannii] She was like,
"I just need to finish the tour."
Like, she's so professional.

[Dannii] I'm like, "Oh, for God's sake,
we need to keep you alive."
This one's slower
than when you did the last one.
But she was determined, right?
