The Orbital Children (2022) s01e03 Episode Script

Lunatic Seven

1
I can't--
I can't reach it.
It stopped.
Where are we?
I don't really know.
EPISODE 3: LUNATIC SEVEN
I didn't know
that this tube was here either.
We have air.
This is probably a pathway
for maintenance drones.
It connects to someplace with oxygen.
What if we can't get out of here?
Nobody is dying today.
Ouch!
How do you know that?
Because that's what's written
in the Seven Poem.
PROPHECIES
Please leave out the occult.
In situations like these, you just do
what you need to do based on science.
I'll do what I need to do.
Mina, everybody!
So we've escaped
to some kind of unknown tube.
And who saved us?
Why, this stuffed animal did.
Who are you?
I am Anshin-kun, the station fairy.
Right.
But who's inside?
There isn't anybody inside.
-Who's that?
-It's the chief.
Oh, the chief. I see now.
I don't get it! Chief of what?
Come on now. Pop out, why don't you?
What? Just an old guy?
He's not just an old guy.
He's the chief designer of this station--
Kokubunji.
The ex-designer.
When Deegle acquired it,
they kindly fired me.
Then does that mean
you know all about this station?
-Do you know where we should run away to?
-Yeah.
-Really?
-I designed it up to a point after all.
But this is different
from what I remember.
Did you say "up to a point"?
Up to what point?
About 70%.
So you're not familiar with the other 30%?
There's oxygen
on the other side of this hatch.
Push me.
Everybody push.
All right. We're safe.
That's lucky.
The spare battery is still alive.
But it probably won't last for long.
This is a shop for tourists
to arrange an EVA.
What is an EVA?
It's spacewalking.
You put on a space suit and go outside.
Nasa, are you okay?
This is the Apollo space suit.
-What's this?
-Don't touch that!
There is no air
on the other side of this bulkhead.
There's a breach beyond this point.
Open it and it's curtains for you.
Then it's a dead end.
Where do we get on the shuttle?
It's the ring pathway.
If we walk all the way to the Mars dome,
then we should be able to get to the top.
-What?
-The ring pathway isn't connected.
That's right.
It hasn't been constructed yet.
The other side hasn't yet either.
Air is leaking out too.
Soon, humans won't be able
to occupy this spot either.
Will we die? Are we going to die?
We are not dying yet.
The next cylinder over still has power.
Our only option is to go there.
But there's no pathway.
There's a way.
We're gonna go outside
and walk on the drone catwalk.
Outside? As in out in space?
Obviously.
Yes. We get to do an EVA.
No way.
Isn't that something
only people with training can do?
-Yeah.
-Yep.
I can't do that.
Don't worry.
I have loads of EVA experience.
You'll be fine if you follow me.
Look, I'm even in my personalized
space suit already.
This is an Orlan.
-What's that?
-An antique space suit.
Fine. Just close it!
I made it to meet demand for the mascot
off the station,
but I never got any offers.
Now the time to use it has--
Chief?
Who the hell are you people?
Calm down, Chief.
Sit down over here.
Not again.
What was that?
Idiopathic dementia.
It occasionally flares up.
He recovers right away though.
Chief, could you tell me your name?
I'm Anshin-kun.
I'll go get the space suits.
No way. I can't do it.
I've never spacewalked before.
Find something
that is within our capabilities!
Then stay here and die.
-What?
-Touya.
Space is true nature.
True nature is not your friend.
SPACE IS OUR FRIEND!
It will kill humans caught off guard.
It's your enemy.
What is that supposed to mean?
The people who have no will to live
will get left behind.
I'm am so going to broadcast you
when this is over.
I'm sorry. He doesn't mean it.
But Touya is right.
You can complain all you want,
but you'll only die.
What? Are you taking his side?
That and I've wanted to try an EVA.
I'm going to go help Touya.
What? Stupid brother.
I can't get on the shuttle
unless I can get to the dome.
This has holes in it.
This is also under maintenance.
This is bad.
There aren't any usable space suits.
I'll help too.
I've studied the equipment.
-Yeah, help us out.
-Okay.
By the way,
I really respect you, Touya.
There will be more people like you
in the future,
and you will represent humanity.
Also, Seven said the same thing.
Humanity must leave Earth.
Yes, I know.
I'm sorry
for flicking your forehead before.
No way. I'm honored. Please do it again.
I don't think so.
Sup?
I plan on surviving too, so I'll help.
-Konoha.
-Yes, Mina?
Sorry about before.
I was out of line with that question.
Don't worry about it.
Okay. I'm going survive no matter what
and beat his follower count.
-Touya.
-What?
I want you to lead us
when we do the EVA over there.
What?
Nasa is injured, and I'm worried
about the chief's dementia.
You do it.
You're really like a leader.
You're arrogant and all.
I don't have experience in space.
Touya,
you're the most suited for this.
We don't really need a leader, do we?
There's no up or down in space.
Yes, we do need one.
I'm just saying
I'm not very good at reading the room.
We know.
There are no rooms in space,
so you'll be fine.
Don't blame me if we fail.
Then it's settled.
Search for space suit parts.
There's one suit here.
That's a mock-up. If you wear it outside,
you will die instantly.
A wheelchair.
What's this?
This is an air lock.
Found them. Space suits.
We have one children's bubble,
the two atmospheric pressure suits
that Taiyou found
and an online suit that is off-line.
Chief has the Orlan, so we are short two.
Are the ONIQLOs we're wearing now no good?
This is like a casual life jacket.
You won't even last five minutes out there
in one of these.
What do you mean "won't last"?
-You will burst.
-Burst?
At this atmospheric pressure,
the nitrogen in your blood is low.
Touya, are you saying that--
Yeah. It might be possible
to go outside in an ONIQLO.
But didn't you say
you would burst in an ONIQLO?
That's if you put in air
at one atmosphere of pressure.
Are you talking about decompression?
What the hell is wrong
with this space suit?
That's the suit for total beginners.
I can't connect to the Internet.
Well, I'm in a bubble for children.
I wanted to do an EVA.
Full systems check.
Suit, check. Oxygen, check.
Communications, check.
Closing the hatch.
-Airtightness call.
-Airtight, check.
Konoha, disengage
the atmospheric-pressure suit lock.
Konoha and Mina will secure Nasa
to a wheelchair.
Closing the decompression room.
We will leave last.
We will decompress as we walk,
but we don't have enough time
to fully decompress.
We will get decompression sickness,
but we won't die.
You will feel intense pain and nausea,
but you have to tolerate it
until you get to the other side.
Okay, here we go!
Listen to me, Earthers.
We off-Earthers have a duty
to protect and preserve untrained Earthers
in times like these.
No matter what, we will keep you alive
and return you to Earth.
Walk to that Mars dome.
Chief,
don't let Hakase roll off the pathway.
Everyone, follow behind the chief.
My suit is inflating. I can't walk.
Let the air out of your suit.
Doesn't the Earth look a little closer
than it did before?
Why is there snow over there?
What is that pattern?
It's an "S" Pattern.
Nasa, are you all right?
It is a sacred formula that appears
over and over in the Seven Poem.
The "S" Pattern?
Comet?
-Konoha, what's the matter?
-Konoha, keep walking!
A comet.
A comet is coming.
-Why is a comet heading this way?
-And at such a time!
-Where am I?
-Chief, you back with us?
Yes. What's the situation now?
There's comet debris coming this way.
It seems the time has come to use it.
Body-expanse operation!
How macho!
-The comet!
-Run!
Taiyou!
Taiyou!
Oh, no.
Just a little farther. Reach for--
Remove the tether.
Damn it, I can't.
I can't hold on any longer.
It's pulling me!
Not bad for an Earther.
You too.
Touya,
an hour ago you said Earthers should die.
Shut up, Earther.
I treated you guys like idiots
because you are Earthers,
but you're not so bad.
I'm honored!
You don't have to force yourself
to say leader-like things.
Detachment function not in operation.
Detachment--
I'm never wearing this space suit again!
If we climb up here, we should be able
to get to the control room.
What is this grater-like thing?
The heavy bulkhead is closed.
Can't we open it manually?
We can't open heavy bulkheads
without Twelve.
Another dead end?
The wall's wireless charger is working.
The electrical network
is starting to self-repair.
If I can bypass this,
I can probably restore it.
Electricity!
This is the Mars Development
Historical Museum.
Ready, go.
Incidentally,
isn't this surface a little unusual?
You're right.
The ground is turning.
I see.
Look,
it's because the rotations make gravity.
The ground is turning on this circle.
See?
The gravity on this side is tilted.
I do wired recharging.
PATHWAY TO C CYLINDER CLOSED
There's a breach in this pathway too?
So this is another dead end.
How long will this fabric bulkhead last?
About half a day, I think.
Can we use the convenience store?
My treat.
GENUINE PRODUCTS
Gather the necessary supplies
and eat what you want.
-Mighty Anshin-kun!
-With pleasure.
Thank goodness. It still works.
The "S" Pattern.
Nasa mentioned it earlier.
What? "Comet water."
This is the comet water
picked up on the rocket, isn't it?
It's not from the rocket.
The comet itself is melted down,
turned into plasma and injected.
Ah, plasma. Yes. I know.
Plasma is tasty, isn't it?
Damn it.
Can't see it from here either.
What's the matter, Touya?
I want to check
if the control room is secure.
Yeah, can't see it from here.
If only we had an Internet connection,
I would be able to see it
with my cyber glasses.
OUT OF RANGE
Uncle.
We'll definitely be able to see it
from another window. I'll go look.
UNCLE, STILL ALIVE? REPLY.
MESSAGE FAILED TO SEND
It's supposed to be right above.
Touya.
Thanks for before.
Yeah, you too.
This comet water was also harvested
by Seven Technology, wasn't it?
That's right.
Even so, it's just normal water, isn't it?
Yeah.
I bet you hate Seven, don't you?
Lunatic is probably behind Seven's
design flaws in your implants.
I still don't know a lot about Lunatic.
The Seven on the moon's surface
back then dramatically advanced
their intelligence without reason.
They lost control,
and eventually the "Frame" intelligence
framework was destroyed on its own,
and the intelligence collapsed.
They also lost control of the products
designed by Seven in a chain reaction,
and many accidents
occurred around the globe.
We found out that
the number of casualties from this event
was in the thousands.
UN2 made cognitive limiters compulsory
in order to prevent another Lunatic,
so that a disaster like that
never happens again.
As your friend, I want to help you.
Hand over that drone.
Please let me do the right thing.
You don't have to wake up Lunatic.
If my dad uses his connections at UN2,
we can find a solution for your implant.
No.
Why not?
You couldn't possibly want
to cause another event like Seven.
You don't understand anything.
Don't you hate Seven?
If Seven had used cognitive limiters,
you never would have had
to suffer like this.
Yeah.
If we didn't have the Seven implants,
we would have died
when we were even younger.
I told you before.
The implants worked when we were little.
If limiters were put on by Seven,
we would have died at three
like the other ten did.
But--
Seven didn't fail.
It just found a method
that didn't work well.
But will you sacrifice yourself for that?
-You'll die.
-I'm not dead yet.
What about Konoha?
If Seven hadn't been euthanized,
its intelligence would have expanded
and it eventually would have found
a method that succeeded.
It's UN2 that failed.
I'm going to destroy
all of the UN2's cognitive limiters,
complete an AI that surpasses Seven
and live.
I'm not going to die.
Neither will Konoha.
I'm not done talking!
The pain is back.
Nasa.
There's a Smart printer
at the convenience store.
We're having a print-spree.
Isn't this great?
Your Smart is the old seal-style one,
isn't it?
Get this one.
Well, I'm happy with this one.
Is that a printer too?
Yes. I thought I could make a brace.
Are you okay? Does it hurt?
I'm fine. It doesn't hurt anymore.
Oops!
Nasa, thank you for protecting us.
Thank you.
Oh, no.
I mean, it's my job
to ensure the safety of our guests.
How is your injury?
I'm totally fine now.
I'm in charge
of this station's health care after all.
See? Now quit bothering me
and go play over there.
I hate kids, you know.
-Okay.
-Okay.
I'm tired.
I really can't stand kids.
Yet kids love me.
Ouch.
We must hurry.
-The sun set.
-It's night mode.
The Seven that surpassed
human intelligence and fell to Lunatic
kept spitting out cryptic formulas
that didn't make sense
and caused numerous accidents.
That's the Seven Poem, right?
It was in the Monthly Mar magazine.
THE TRUTH OF LUNATIC SEVEN
False rumors started spreading that it was
an encrypted prophecy of the future,
and the UN2 as well as some
research institutions tried to solve it.
But there was no correct answer.
It was only used as an excuse
for occultists to make money
and by groups like John Doe
to carry out terrorist acts.
But there is still information
that has not been publicized.
Somebody actually deciphered
a small portion of it.
This is what it said.
36.79% of humanity
needed to be euthanized right away.
That's true, isn't it?
My father wanted to go public with it,
and he lost his position at the UN2.
In order to restore my father's name,
I want to tell the world
the truth about Lunatic
and restore the UN2 to its original form.
Do you know the truth?
Before Lunatic, Seven said this,
that humanity must leave its cradle
and have and raise children off of Earth.
Back then, ten children died on the moon,
and then most humans ended up
opposing space exploration.
They said humans needed
to return to Earth.
But where are we supposed to go home to?
Those of us who cannot
withstand Earth's gravity
have no home to return to.
Seven was our only ally.
Seven's words alone
have supported me and Konoha
this entire time.
I guess what I said is useless.
Let's talk later.
It's a little different
from the Seven Poem again.
Yes, it's rushing into a new branch.
Konoha.
I brought a first aid kit.
Oh, thanks.
Ouch.
Is there an auto-diagnosis patch?
It looks like a compress.
-This?
-Yeah.
Oh, it hurts.
Nasa, am I--
Am I going to die soon?
What's brought this on all of a sudden?
I've been light-headed lately,
and it's getting worse.
Don't be silly.
I'm the one who looks more likely to die.
Why do you say that?
You know a lot about Seven, don't you?
I wonder how Seven felt.
Right before Seven died,
it was the smartest it had ever been.
It was also able
to see everything in the future,
so it left the Seven Poem.
That means it knew it was going to die,
didn't it?
It saw its own death,
the end of the world. It saw everything.
Even so, it continued to look
into the future for humanity's sake.
I feel like I kind of understand
how Seven felt.
Konoha.
Surely it saw through everything--
as if it were clear, clean water--
and it died with no regrets.
When I think about that, I--
I'm no longer afraid of dying.
It let me live 14 years.
If Seven says I am going to die soon,
-I have peace of mind--
-Konoha.
We will all die.
That's a fact.
But not now.
Also, the future will end soon.
What?
The fixed future, that is.
The Seven Poem is the story of the end.
Oh, yeah. I'll tell you a special secret.
FiTsZ.
FiTsZ.
It's a secret word.
Memorize it.
My cyber glasses can connect
to the Internet and peer comms.
SPACE DRONE PHOTOS
A sightseeing drone.
Touya!
I figured it out.
We can connect the photo drone
for tourists to peer-to-peer.
We have a way to do that?
It connected.
The video has come through.
That's the crab that pinched me earlier.
The shuttle. There's no shuttle.
The entire shuttle area is gone.
-The shuttle!
-I can see it!
What a relief. The control room is safe.
No way.
No one will die on this station today.
Nobody.
Uncle.
Touya, don't give up yet. Think.
When the control room
is no longer usable--
-Touya, the sub-control room.
-That's right.
There's light.
People.
Uncle!
Sagami.
We're in a vacuum,
so we can't talk with them like this.
It's a laser transmission.
-Touya, are you safe?
-Uncle!
It's Nasa.
I am with the three Earthers,
Konoha and the chief.
Great. That means everyone has survived.
You've done a great job. Where are you?
In the B Cylinder, Mars Floor.
Touya, you have to survive long enough
for the UN2 rescue ship to come.
We will.
The night is over.
Just a little longer, guys.
We're going to solve the problem.
