Boston Blue (2025) s01e04 Episode Script
Rites of Passage
1
[Silver family praying in Hebrew]
[prayer continues in Hebrew]
Amen.
JONAH: May this candle
bring peace to the soul of
my father, Benjamin Silver.
I'm so glad we're all here
to celebrate Ben's yahrzeit together.
- It means a lot.
- EDWIN: The first anniversary
of a loved one's death
should be supported by the
gathering of family and friends.
I appreciate you being here.
There's no place we'd
rather be than here.
[chuckling]
SARAH: We're here.
So, tonight, and every day forward,
we're gonna celebrate the joy.
EDWIN: Pass that brisket this way.
I still cannot believe to this day
that he did not take my phone away
- or my Xbox.
- [laughs] Jonah.
- You were his favorite.
- You were his baby boy.
- The baby boy.
- Dad didn't have a favorite.
- Jonah was his favorite.
- Sarah, how can you say that?
- He loved you all the same.
- SARAH: Uh
Well, maybe a little bit more.
- [laughter]
- How was I the favorite?
After all the hours Ben suffered
coaching your horrible
girls' soccer team.
- Dad!
- JONAH: Grandpa, you know
- you said that out loud, right?
- He's right. No.
- He's right. We were awful.
- Wow. [laughs]
Awful.
And Dad was so patient.
Remember how you used to
pout on the sidelines?
- Because you hated not playing.
- Lena.
- Uh-huh. -Do not tell that story.
- Tell the story.
Yes, please tell us
about the superintendent
pouting on the sidelines.
- Oh, she devised a whole plan.
- [Sarah groans]
Now you make me sound like
some kind of evil mastermind.
She used to pay her teammates
a dollar so they would fake injuries
- so she could stay in the game.
- Oh.
- That is evil.
- SEAN: Terrible.
I was the best player
on the soccer team.
I was just doing what
Dad always said to do.
If you witness an injustice
LENA/MAE/JONAH: Do something about it.
Uh, Lena, do you remember
all the corny, uh, bat mitzvah ideas
- that he came up with for you?
- DANNY: What'd you end up going with?
- LENA: Oh, I didn't have a bat mitzvah.
- How come?
LENA: Because I didn't
technically fully convert.
To Judaism.
Sorry.
It's okay. It's okay.
L'chaim.
- LENA: Mm!
- What?
[laughing]: Oh!
DANNY: I've been practicing.
Okay.
ALL: L'chaim!
[chuckling]
- Look at this man speaking Hebrew.
- DANNY: Can we talk
- about her soccer days more?
- Oh, yeah. It was
- quite genius.
- SARAH: Can we not?
[laughter] Well, you can
talk about the "genius" part.
[laughter]
[indistinct chatter]
[car door opens, closes]
DANNY: Why is everything
in Boston uphill?
[Lena laughs]
You let me know if you
need to stop, catch a breath,
stretch, you know?
Will do, will do.
I am curious, though
why aren't we driving?
LENA: 'Cause traffic's been
redirected around the park.
You know, thanks for
including us on Friday.
Ben sounds like he would've been
a great guy to have a beer with.
And you call him your dad,
not your stepdad.
That is very cool.
- We were very close.
- Yeah.
If you don't mind me asking,
how does it work?
You practice Judaism but you
never converted to Judaism?
Yeah. Well, my mom gave
me the option to convert
- when she married Dad.
- Uh-huh.
I didn't want to do it. I was torn
- between my grandpa and her.
- Ah.
Baptist minister.
You know, the more I went to
temple and practiced Judaism,
the more I got into it. I just
I never actually went
back and did the mikvah,
the conversion ritual.
And now, at the anniversary
of Ben's death,
it's kind of bothering
you that you didn't?
Yeah.
I'm worried that he died disappointed.
All those traditions
were so special to him.
You know, high holidays,
Passover seders,
family Shabbat.
If I had to guess,
I'd say he probably understands.
Set a pretty high bar for us dads.
When my wife died, all my sons ever saw
was me coming in late with takeout
and heading out early back to work.
They lost out a lot to the job.
- Grief is tough.
- I know.
Maybe it's not too late to fix it.
For both of us.
[siren whooping]
[shutter clicking]
- Thank you.
- What do we got?
The building's handyman
was taking out garbage.
Came across this rug.
And there's a body inside?
Chopped up or together?
Saved that surprise for you two.
Thanks.
[exhales sharply]
Stab wound. Bled out.
No cuts or bruising
to suggest a struggle.
DANNY: No wallet.
No cell phone.
Just a set of keys.
Looks like a robbery,
but it doesn't exactly quack like one.
I mean, why go through all the
trouble of rolling this guy up
in a rug, dragging him down here,
dumping him just for a
cell phone and some cash?
You think it's a "they"?
Definitely take more than one person
to carry him all the way down here.
Check out his right hand.
Now, I bet you cannot break the grip
that he has on these flowers.
Let's see.
- Wow.
- Cadaveric spasm.
Instantaneous rigor at
the moment of death.
And you know this because?
Oh, let me guess:
you have another sibling,
who's a coroner.
- No.
- Ah.
I, uh, temped for three months
at the medical examiner's office.
You tagged toes?
I answered phones,
but I did pick up a few useful facts,
like the reflex reaction of
someone when they're stabbed
is to let go.
But he held on tight, so that means
these flowers meant something to him.
It can probably get us an ID.
Or lead us to our killer.
[church bell tolling]
Want to go over your morning schedule?
Not unless it's captivating, Charlie.
Ah. Want to go over
your afternoon schedule?
District Attorney Silver!
District Attorney Silver.
- Do you have a minute?
- CHARLIE: You know that woman?
- No, I don't think so.
- You go on, Mae. I'll handle this.
No, wait. Please. What happened to my son
was unfair and no one will listen to me.
I need your help.
Mae, go inside the courthouse, please.
No, I requested a case
review on behalf of my son.
His name is Elijah Daniels.
I don't know that name.
You never read it.
My application never got to you?
I don't know why I thought
this was possible.
It's all just empty words and
false hope with you people.
Whoa security! Security.
Okay, Charlie, thanks.
It's okay. Thank you, sir.
Ma'am.
I take case reviews very seriously.
Now, I don't know how yours
fell through the cracks,
but I am not in the
business of false hope.
- What's your name?
- It's It's Joanna Daniels.
My son is in prison and he
doesn't deserve to be there.
I need your help to get him out.
I'm a professor at BU.
I ride my bike to campus every
other day around this time.
You were in the bike lane, right?
- Yes, I was in the bike lane.
- Mr. Sims, I'm not
- "Professor," if you don't mind.
- Okay. All right.
Professor, can you tell us
exactly where the accident occurred?
It wasn't an accident.
Why do you say that?
Because it was a hit-and-run.
The word "accident" suggests
a lower degree of accountability.
Now, sir, can you tell us what happened?
I was coming around that corner
when I was suddenly struck
- from behind, thrown from
- Uh-huh.
my now mangled means of transport.
- SEAN: Your bike?
- GARTH: I plummeted
towards the asphalt as
my not-yet-fulfilled life
flashed before me.
Can you describe the vehicle for us?
Faded green sedan.
Not sure of the model, not high-end.
SEAN: Paint transfer.
Did you get a look at the driver?
No faces. Just two silhouettes.
Didn't even slow down or look back.
Massachusetts plates.
R27. That's as far as I got.
I loved this bike.
I want you to find out
who did this to her.
Okay, now, the paramedics are here.
They're gonna take a look at you
and get you all bandaged up.
DISPATCH: Attention, all units.
First Avenue Bank. Robbery in progress.
Verified hostages, number still unknown.
No reported injuries.
[siren wailing]
[indistinct chatter]
We got one suspect, eight hostages.
- I was told someone was shot?
- Security guard.
Gunshot wound to the lower leg.
Non-life-threatening.
There is a female teller,
a Brenda Moretti,
who is being held at gunpoint.
Let's launch a drone
with a thermal camera.
On it. We did speak with our robber
via a security guard's walkie.
He confirmed there were eight hostages.
- That was 30 minutes ago.
- [drone buzzing]
We have a problem.
This is the thermal image
of everyone inside.
Bank employees are on the floor here.
There are only seven people inside.
There should be nine.
You said there was one
suspect and eight hostages.
Uh, I have my teams
positioned everywhere.
We've evacuated the adjacent businesses.
The perimeter's secure.
No one has gone in or out of that bank.
You might want to check your equipment.
Nothing to check.
Uh, this image is from that drone
scanning that bank right now.
You're telling me that
two people just vanished?
Get prepped. We're going inside.
Red team! Moving in.
[indistinct chatter]
OFFICER: Move, move, move!
OFFICER: All right, let's go!
[indistinct chatter]
[groaning] -WOMAN: He's been shot.
Somebody help him.
- OFFICER: Clear!
- [indistinct chatter]
- Clear!
- Clear!
Clear.
[woman whimpering]
No windows in the bathrooms.
We checked every exit.
We're secure. No shooter.
They had to get out of here somehow.
Thermal image would
have detected movement
if anyone were climbing
through the HVAC ducts.
Got any other options?
Hypotheticals? Guesses?
- Do you believe in aliens, Cory?
- If we don't find
those two people in here,
today is when I start.
TRACEY: All clear.
They're not here.
Gentlemen, we officially have
an armed fugitive on the run.
And he's got a hostage.
[ship horn blows]
[indistinct chatter]
No. Sorry. I can't help.
Is it just me or is it
weird that no one in this
entire flower market knows
about these flowers?
It's not just you,
it is weird, but I was told
this gentleman over here
might be able to help us.
Hello. Detective Silver,
Detective Reagan.
Plantastic Blooms.
This is your business?
- Yeah.
- Yeah? Okay. Can you tell us
about these orchids?
I'm all about roses.
That's interesting, because,
uh, both roses and orchids
are cultivated for the
indoors and the outdoors,
both attract pollination,
both are hybridized.
Also, most of these other
vendors are selling stems.
You're one of the only
ones selling potted blooms.
Your card also says you're an
"expert in all plants."
DANNY: Now, I'm not sure
if she studied botany,
is a botanist or even dated a botanist,
but I'm pretty sure she's
got you on that one.
So, listen, you can either help us
or we can find a reason to fine you.
They're lady slippers.
It's illegal to import them from China,
which is why no one's talking.
"Illegal" like somebody
could be killed for them?
It's not a black market thing,
if that's what you're asking.
The plants find their way into
this country occasionally,
but it's more expensive
bringing them over from China
than the flower's even worth.
So you're basically paying for
the risk of getting caught.
Yeah. The orchids' real
value is mostly sentimental.
Customers order them over
because it reminds them of home.
Has anyone been asking about
these lady slippers at all?
I mean, you seem like the
kind of guy who knows a guy
who knows the guy that
we're looking for.
So, why don't you give us
what we're looking for?
[knocking on door]
Hey. I got your message.
- I'd like to talk about this morning.
- Mae, I'm sorry.
I overreacted.
I treated that woman
like she was a threat.
But it's because I thought
about what happened to Ben
on those steps.
I only had good intentions.
I know, Charlie.
We've all had Ben on our minds lately.
I did locate Joanna Daniels's request
to our Integrity Review Board
regarding her son's case,
which was denied.
I haven't gone through all the pages,
but there doesn't seem
to be an explanation why.
Well, I don't know the specifics,
but if her son's crime and conviction
- was in another jurisdiction
- That was my first thought,
but Elijah's case was right
here in Suffolk County.
- [sighs] I'll look into it.
- Mrs. Daniels requested a review
because she believes her
son's sentence is unjust.
He's serving ten years, Charlie.
Elijah Daniels got into a
fight defending himself.
And unfortunately, the other guy,
Geoff Seward, who threw the first punch,
suffered a long-term physical injury.
So, I just, I'd like to
see the entire case file.
- Have it sent to my office.
- Mae,
I think it's a bad look to
second-guess our judgment.
We created the Integrity Review Board
to allow incarcerated
individuals a chance
to have their cases
reviewed and investigated,
and that's all that Joanna's asking for.
Yeah, and we've done that here,
but we never promised
that every case would be overturned
and every sentence would be reduced.
Nonetheless, I'd like to see
Joanna Daniels's request.
Well, you may want to reconsider.
- Why?
- Because the judge
that imposed the sentence
in the original case
was Ben.
[bells jingle]
DANNY: Police!
Anybody in here?
Police!
- Guess not.
- [phone buzzing]
[clears throat]
ID confirmed.
RMV photo. Our victim's
name is Henry Chen.
I think Mr. Henry Chen might
have been murdered here.
- Why do you think that?
- This outline of a rug
that was removed.
My money says it's the rug
we found Mr. Chen rolled up in.
Let's look around.
Hey, yo! Hey, hey!
Can I help you with something?
Detective Reagan,
this is Detective Silver.
Can you step out from
behind the counter, please?
Come on. Keep your hands up.
Come on out.
Just want to ask you a few questions.
Is Mr. Chen okay?
Why wouldn't he be okay?
What's your name?
Uh, Jimmy.
- You have a last name, Jimmy?
- Holloway. Jimmy Holloway.
- How do you know Mr. Chen?
- Why can't you tell me if he's okay?
Why do you think something
happened to him, Jimmy?
He never ignores my calls or my texts.
Come on, you're cops, you're here.
Is he at a hospital?
What happened to him?
Mr. Chen is dead.
[exhales] No.
- We're very sorry.
- No, no, no, no
You were friends?
[panting]
He was my boss.
- So you work here?
- I used to.
Now I just help out sometimes.
Is that what you're doing
here now? Helping out?
Uh, he keeps the time sheets in there.
Okay. When's the last
time you saw Mr. Chen?
Uh, I don't know. A week ago?
Do you know who did it?
- Did you catch them?
- No. Not yet.
You know anyone who'd
want to see him dead?
No.
- No one in the world.
- Okay.
Okay.
You can take a minute.
Have a seat.
But hang out. We might
need some more information.
[line ringing]
[Danny clears throat]
Yeah, we need CSRU here
at 1125 Myrtle Street.
[indistinct radio chatter]
[siren wailing]
All right, let's distribute a photo
of the teller Brenda
Moretti to the press,
airports, train stations, Uber and Lyft.
Let's look at the bank's
surveillance video,
talk to the bank employees,
see if we can piece together
some description of this perp.
This will remain command
center here at the bank.
We will set up a tips
center at the old church.
The old church. This bank is in
one of the oldest parts of Boston.
There are rumored to be
underground tunnels all
over the North End.
This has to be how they got out.
You don't really think
You got any other theories?
It's time to prove that old urban myth.
- Hey, boss.
- Yeah.
So, description and partial
plate from our hit-and-run
was a match to a car
stolen three days ago.
I issued a BOLO for a green sedan,
a Massachusetts plate ending in R27.
Okay.
Hey. Rock paper scissors.
Loser's got to call the professor,
let him know that the
case for his mangled means
of transportation is still ongoing.
Sure.
Dude, what happened to
you in that coffee shop?
What?
Did you fall in love with
the cashier or something?
Your head's in the clouds, buddy.
What's going on?
Just haven't been able to stop thinking
about my dad since Friday.
I'm sorry, man.
I it's fine.
You know, when I was 15,
he took me to this waterfront bar.
It was called Bosco's.
I wasn't old enough to drink,
but I was old enough to play darts.
And, uh [chuckles]
every time somebody
would hit a bull's-eye,
the whole bar would just go, "Bosco's!"
- [chuckles]
- It was the best, man.
It was our place,
and we would go all the time.
I'm sorry I never got to meet him.
I only wish I had that kind
of relationship with my dad.
What are you talking about?
Danny's the best.
Yeah, when he's around.
Even after my brother
Jack went off to college
and it was just the two of us,
he was always working.
I never thought he'd leave New York,
and now he's here.
It's for you.
Yeah, but the vibe hasn't changed.
Like, I'm-I'm happy he's here.
But I figured, you know,
me becoming a cop,
having that in common, we'd be closer.
But we're not.
All right, come on.
Don't get too mushy on me.
- We're on the clock. Let's go.
- Yeah. You started it.
- DANNY: Anything?
- No surveillance cameras
in the antique shop,
but a few on the street.
So, tech guys are downloading
what was recovered now.
Mm. Doesn't make any sense, this case.
I mean, why bust in there
and kill a guy and roll him up in a rug
if you're not even gonna
bother to rob the place?
So, if we had to chase one thing?
- Jimmy Holloway.
- Mm.
Now, why didn't you buy his story?
Comes rushing in,
and asks if we know who did it?
And did we catch "them"?
How does he know it's a "them"?
- Right.
- And then he's heading towards the desk
- where we found the gun.
- So, definitely
- a person of interest.
- Yeah. Well, we can go talk to CSRU
and see if they found anything else
- at the crime scene.
- Okay.
Excuse me, are you Detective Silver?
- Yes.
- I was told you might know
something about my father, Henry Chen?
I can't find him.
[Danny exhales]
I can take care of that. You got this?
Yeah. Yeah.
Uh
Let's take a seat.
[sniffles]
[exhales]
We were supposed to meet
for breakfast this morning.
He was so excited.
Said he had a surprise for me.
When was the last time
you talked to your dad?
I usually visit every
three months from Philly.
I was in med school there.
I skipped my last visit home.
Now he's gone.
[sniffles]
Can you think of any reason
why someone would want to kill your dad?
No. He was a generous man.
A loving father.
It was just the two of
us since I was seven.
I don't know anyone who didn't like him.
Do you know of a Jimmy Holloway?
Jimmy?
Is he a suspect?
H-He wouldn't do something like this.
Seems like you know him pretty well.
No, I just know that he
really cared about my dad.
Why did you skip your last visit?
There was just so much going on.
That is such a lame excuse.
- [bells jingle]
- LENA: Thank you.
Got your message.
DANNY: How did it go with Ula?
Very emotional.
- But I think she's holding back.
- Really?
Yeah. What are we doing back here?
[exhales] There's
something I couldn't shake
from this morning,
and then again when I saw
the crime scene photos
about this big cabinet.
This armoire.
- Thank you, Merriam-Webster.
- Mm-hmm.
It's these drag marks.
I kept thinking about them.
And then thinking,
why would somebody risk damaging
a big, expensive antique armoire
by dragging it across the floor?
[strains]: And then
I figured out why.
Look at that.
- Only in Boston.
- [chuckles]
[distant voices]
Expand the perimeter four
blocks northeast. Two-tier grid.
I need it to happen now.
BPD! Hands in the air!
Sarah?
Based on what we know about
the two crime scenes,
my bank robber fled through
the underground tunnels
with Brenda Moretti as a hostage.
She's the teller.
Then they escaped through
Mr. Chen's antique store.
If you're gonna do
something this stupid,
you better have a good plan.
SARAH: Oh, shoot.
We can't see them leave
'cause there's a delivery
truck blocking the view.
Okay, what do we have
from the night before?
Roughly around the time
of Henry Chen's death.
Mm-hmm.
DANNY: Okay, Mr. Chen exits,
two people approach and enter,
using a key.
Who do you know has keys?
Jimmy Holloway and Ula Chen.
So, now you want Ula as a suspect?
Person of interest.
- Wait, Mr. Chen came back.
- SARAH: Hmm.
LENA: Yeah, but he's empty-handed.
He was clutching those
orchids when he died,
so he must have gone
back for the flowers.
So, maybe he returns,
surprised the two perps,
and that's when they murder him.
Can you fast-forward a
little bit, Superintendent?
Mm-hmm.
LENA: Who stops to lock the door
when you're carrying out a dead body?
Somebody prepping a tunnel for
a bank robbery the next day?
Or somebody who's concerned
about the contents of the store.
So, you really think Ula did this?
Or Jimmy. They both have keys,
and it makes sense,
they would both know
there's a tunnel connecting
the store to the bank.
And that would make them both
accomplices to the robbery.
Yeah, but Ula has somewhat of an alibi.
Yeah, she was driving to Boston.
Problem was, she was driving alone
and we can't corroborate it.
We need to find out who
these two people are.
All right.
- And by "we," I mean you two.
- Ah. Yeah.
- Roger that.
- Good luck out there.
MAE: Geoff Seward threw the first punch.
He was drunk and disorderly.
Elijah Daniels was only
trying to defend himself,
and Ben sentenced Elijah to ten years,
and when you're 19,
that's like a lifetime.
You remember your 20s.
Nope.
[laughs softly]
The time you're making
all those decisions
and facing challenges
that are gonna shape you
into the person you're gonna
be for the rest of your life.
That time shouldn't be spent in
prison 'cause of one mistake.
Geoff Seward is spending
his 20s in a wheelchair.
So you agree with Ben?
Didn't say that.
Oh, boy.
Why is this so hard?
Because you love and miss your husband.
Before you knew Ben was the judge,
what was your instinct?
Dad, I invited you here
so you would just tell me
to stick with Ben's decision.
I believe your staff tried
that when they denied
the original claim.
Mae, I know the last
thing you want to do
is muddy up Ben's legacy.
But your love for your
husband doesn't negate
the possibility that he made a mistake.
But I'm not just thinking about Ben.
What if it was Jonah?
In jail or in a wheelchair?
Do you believe the sentence
Elijah Daniels is serving
is in the interest of justice?
No.
Then do something about it.
Come here. You all have to see this.
LENA: Okay.
- Okay. Ready?
- Mm-hmm.
SARAH: Look at this.
Did you see it?
Does she always get this
excited about police work?
- Every day.
- Okay, I'm gonna play it one more time.
DANNY: Okay.
This is the surveillance
footage from the bank.
Brenda Moretti starts
to open her cash drawer
before the robber even
gets to her window.
Look, she's moving toward the vault,
but the robber, he's not talking,
he's not telling her what to do.
She knows the plan.
She could be the other person
in the surveillance footage
from the antique shop.
Brenda Moretti is not a hostage.
She's in on it.
So, the uniforms are
headed to the address
from the bank for Brenda Moretti.
Great. Maybe we'll see if we can
tie her to Mr. Chen's murder.
Until then, we cannot
rule out Jimmy or Ula.
- Really? She loved her father.
- Yeah, but you're the one
who said she was holding
out on something,
and until we know what
that something is,
we can't rule her out.
Is this case a little close for you?
You know, with Ben's
- yahr
- Yahrzeit.
- Sorry.
- No, it's okay.
You know, when I was younger
and I didn't convert,
Dad gave me this necklace.
It's a chai, the Hebrew symbol for life.
He said to me,
no matter what my religion,
I would always be his daughter.
And that was a blessing for him.
And so, he wanted me to
have a blessing from him.
Well, it sounds like
he was gonna be okay
with whatever decision you made.
But you're still
struggling with converting.
If you don't mind me asking,
what's really holding
you back right now?
My grandpa had a really big
issue when Mom converted.
And truth be told?
I don't want to give up
on my grandpa's faith.
Look, when my wife was murdered,
after my brother was murdered
I lost touch with God.
Drifted far away from the Church.
And my old man knew it,
and he had an opinion about it.
But he didn't say anything to me.
He gave me the space
to figure it out, for myself.
Sometimes, that's what we got to do.
We can't make these
decisions for our family.
We have to do what's
right for ourselves.
SARAH: I found a new link in our cases.
Our teller Brenda Moretti
worked at a bank that was
robbed 18 months ago.
The robber was arrested at the scene.
His name is Travis Neil.
DANNY: Couple of drug arrests,
misdemeanor possessions.
Guy's less of a bank robber and
more an addict who needs money.
Got off on a technicality
for the robbery,
but he never gave up Brenda.
So, this was the duo's second attempt.
And there we go.
Narcotics surveillance photo
- of a drug buy.
- DANNY: Oh, ho, ho, ho,

Is that what you're doing

Uh, he keeps the time sheets in there.
Okay. When's the last
time you saw Mr. Chen?
Uh, I don't know. A week ago?
Do you know who did it?

No.

Okay.

But hang out. We might

Yeah, we need CSRU here
at 1125 Myrtle Street.
[indistinct radio chatter]
[siren wailing]
All right, let's distribute a photo
of the teller Brenda
Moretti to the press,
airports, train stations, Uber and Lyft.
Let's look at the bank's
surveillance video,
talk to the bank employees,
see if we can piece together
some description of this perp.
This will remain command
center here at the bank.
We will set up a tips
center at the old church.
The old church. This bank is in
one of the oldest parts of Boston.
There are rumored to be
underground tunnels all
over the North End.
This has to be how they got out.
You don't really think
You got any other theories?
It's time to prove that old urban myth.
- Hey, boss.
- Yeah.
So, description and partial
plate from our hit-and-run
was a match to a car
stolen three days ago.
I issued a BOLO for a green sedan,
a Massachusetts plate ending in R27.
Okay.
Hey. Rock paper scissors.
Loser's got to call the professor,
let him know that the
case for his mangled means
of transportation is still ongoing.
Sure.
Dude, what happened to
you in that coffee shop?
What?
Did you fall in love with
the cashier or something?
Your head's in the clouds, buddy.
What's going on?
Just haven't been able to stop thinking
about my dad since Friday.
I'm sorry, man.
I it's fine.
You know, when I was 15,
he took me to this waterfront bar.
It was called Bosco's.
I wasn't old enough to drink,
but I was old enough to play darts.
And, uh [chuckles]
every time somebody
would hit a bull's-eye,
the whole bar would just go, "Bosco's!"
- [chuckles]
- It was the best, man.
It was our place,
and we would go all the time.
I'm sorry I never got to meet him.
I only wish I had that kind
of relationship with my dad.
What are you talking about?
Danny's the best.
Yeah, when he's around.
Even after my brother
Jack went off to college
and it was just the two of us,
he was always working.
I never thought he'd leave New York,
and now he's here.
It's for you.
Yeah, but the vibe hasn't changed.
Like, I'm-I'm happy he's here.
But I figured, you know,
me becoming a cop,
having that in common, we'd be closer.
But we're not.
All right, come on.
Don't get too mushy on me.
- We're on the clock. Let's go.
- Yeah. You started it.
- DANNY: Anything?
- No surveillance cameras
in the antique shop,
but a few on the street.
So, tech guys are downloading
what was recovered now.
Mm. Doesn't make any sense, this case.
I mean, why bust in there
and kill a guy and roll him up in a rug
if you're not even gonna
bother to rob the place?
So, if we had to chase one thing?
- Jimmy Holloway.
- Mm.
Now, why didn't you buy his story?
Comes rushing in,
and asks if we know who did it?
And did we catch "them"?
How does he know it's a "them"?
- Right.
- And then he's heading towards the desk
- where we found the gun.
- So, definitely
- a person of interest.
- Yeah. Well, we can go talk to CSRU
and see if they found anything else
- at the crime scene.
- Okay.
Excuse me, are you Detective Silver?
- Yes.
- I was told you might know
something about my father, Henry Chen?
I can't find him.
[Danny exhales]
I can take care of that. You got this?
Yeah. Yeah.
Uh
Let's take a seat.
[sniffles]
[exhales]
We were supposed to meet
for breakfast this morning.
He was so excited.
Said he had a surprise for me.
When was the last time
you talked to your dad?
I usually visit every
three months from Philly.
I was in med school there.
I skipped my last visit home.
Now he's gone.
[sniffles]
Can you think of any reason
why someone would want to kill your dad?
No. He was a generous man.
A loving father.
It was just the two of
us since I was seven.
I don't know anyone who didn't like him.
Do you know of a Jimmy Holloway?
Jimmy?
Is he a suspect?
H-He wouldn't do something like this.
Seems like you know him pretty well.
No, I just know that he
really cared about my dad.
Why did you skip your last visit?
There was just so much going on.
That is such a lame excuse.
- [bells jingle]
- LENA: Thank you.
Got your message.
DANNY: How did it go with Ula?
Very emotional.
- But I think she's holding back.
- Really?
Yeah. What are we doing back here?
[exhales] There's
something I couldn't shake
from this morning,
and then again when I saw
the crime scene photos
about this big cabinet.
This armoire.
- Thank you, Merriam-Webster.
- Mm-hmm.
It's these drag marks.
I kept thinking about them.
And then thinking,
why would somebody risk damaging
a big, expensive antique armoire
by dragging it across the floor?
[strains]: And then
I figured out why.
Look at that.
- Only in Boston.
- [chuckles]
[distant voices]
Expand the perimeter four
blocks northeast. Two-tier grid.
I need it to happen now.
BPD! Hands in the air!
Sarah?
Based on what we know about
the two crime scenes,
my bank robber fled through
the underground tunnels
with Brenda Moretti as a hostage.
She's the teller.
Then they escaped through
Mr. Chen's antique store.
If you're gonna do
something this stupid,
you better have a good plan.
SARAH: Oh, shoot.
We can't see them leave
'cause there's a delivery
truck blocking the view.
Okay, what do we have
from the night before?
Roughly around the time
of Henry Chen's death.
Mm-hmm.
DANNY: Okay, Mr. Chen exits,
two people approach and enter,
using a key.
Who do you know has keys?
Jimmy Holloway and Ula Chen.
So, now you want Ula as a suspect?
Person of interest.
- Wait, Mr. Chen came back.
- SARAH: Hmm.
LENA: Yeah, but he's empty-handed.
He was clutching those
orchids when he died,
so he must have gone
back for the flowers.
So, maybe he returns,
surprised the two perps,
and that's when they murder him.
Can you fast-forward a
little bit, Superintendent?
Mm-hmm.
LENA: Who stops to lock the door
when you're carrying out a dead body?
Somebody prepping a tunnel for
a bank robbery the next day?
Or somebody who's concerned
about the contents of the store.
So, you really think Ula did this?
Or Jimmy. They both have keys,
and it makes sense,
they would both know
there's a tunnel connecting
the store to the bank.
And that would make them both
accomplices to the robbery.
Yeah, but Ula has somewhat of an alibi.
Yeah, she was driving to Boston.
Problem was, she was driving alone
and we can't corroborate it.
We need to find out who
these two people are.
All right.
- And by "we," I mean you two.
- Ah. Yeah.
- Roger that.
- Good luck out there.
MAE: Geoff Seward threw the first punch.
He was drunk and disorderly.
Elijah Daniels was only
trying to defend himself,
and Ben sentenced Elijah to ten years,
and when you're 19,
that's like a lifetime.
You remember your 20s.
Nope.
[laughs softly]
The time you're making
all those decisions
and facing challenges
that are gonna shape you
into the person you're gonna
be for the rest of your life.
That time shouldn't be spent in
prison 'cause of one mistake.
Geoff Seward is spending
his 20s in a wheelchair.
So you agree with Ben?
Didn't say that.
Oh, boy.
Why is this so hard?
Because you love and miss your husband.
Before you knew Ben was the judge,
what was your instinct?
Dad, I invited you here
so you would just tell me
to stick with Ben's decision.
I believe your staff tried
that when they denied
the original claim.
Mae, I know the last
thing you want to do
is muddy up Ben's legacy.
But your love for your
husband doesn't negate
the possibility that he made a mistake.
But I'm not just thinking about Ben.
What if it was Jonah?
In jail or in a wheelchair?
Do you believe the sentence
Elijah Daniels is serving
is in the interest of justice?
No.
Then do something about it.
Come here. You all have to see this.
LENA: Okay.
- Okay. Ready?
- Mm-hmm.
SARAH: Look at this.
Did you see it?
Does she always get this
excited about police work?
- Every day.
- Okay, I'm gonna play it one more time.
DANNY: Okay.
This is the surveillance
footage from the bank.
Brenda Moretti starts
to open her cash drawer
before the robber even
gets to her window.
Look, she's moving toward the vault,
but the robber, he's not talking,
he's not telling her what to do.
She knows the plan.
She could be the other person
in the surveillance footage
from the antique shop.
Brenda Moretti is not a hostage.
She's in on it.
So, the uniforms are
headed to the address
from the bank for Brenda Moretti.
Great. Maybe we'll see if we can
tie her to Mr. Chen's murder.
Until then, we cannot
rule out Jimmy or Ula.
- Really? She loved her father.
- Yeah, but you're the one
who said she was holding
out on something,
and until we know what
that something is,
we can't rule her out.
Is this case a little close for you?
You know, with Ben's
- yahr
- Yahrzeit.
- Sorry.
- No, it's okay.
You know, when I was younger
and I didn't convert,
Dad gave me this necklace.
It's a chai, the Hebrew symbol for life.
He said to me,
no matter what my religion,
I would always be his daughter.
And that was a blessing for him.
And so, he wanted me to
have a blessing from him.
Well, it sounds like
he was gonna be okay
with whatever decision you made.
But you're still
struggling with converting.
If you don't mind me asking,
what's really holding
you back right now?
My grandpa had a really big
issue when Mom converted.
And truth be told?
I don't want to give up
on my grandpa's faith.
Look, when my wife was murdered,
after my brother was murdered
I lost touch with God.
Drifted far away from the Church.
And my old man knew it,
and he had an opinion about it.
But he didn't say anything to me.
He gave me the space
to figure it out, for myself.
Sometimes, that's what we got to do.
We can't make these
decisions for our family.
We have to do what's
right for ourselves.
SARAH: I found a new link in our cases.
Our teller Brenda Moretti
worked at a bank that was
robbed 18 months ago.
The robber was arrested at the scene.
His name is Travis Neil.
DANNY: Couple of drug arrests,
misdemeanor possessions.
Guy's less of a bank robber and
more an addict who needs money.
Got off on a technicality
for the robbery,
but he never gave up Brenda.
So, this was the duo's second attempt.
And there we go.
Narcotics surveillance photo
- of a drug buy.
- DANNY: Oh, ho, ho, ho,
featuring our boy Jimmy.
Mm-hmm.
Looks like somebody was right.
And when I say "somebody," I do mean me.
LENA: Oh, because
I-I remember you leaning heavily on Ula,
so that somebody being
right would be me.
Sort of. I guess we're both right
- Eh
- SARAH: Maybe you both
should do some actual cop
work and find Jimmy Holloway.
- Yes, ma'am.
- That's fair.
Tell us everything you know
about Jimmy Holloway, Ula.
ULA: He worked for my dad.
At first, at the store,
but mostly the warehouse.
He didn't kill him.
How can you be so sure
Jimmy wasn't involved?
He told you, didn't he?
Ula, did you talk to Jimmy?
ULA: He called two days
ago to check up on me.
My dad was still alive.
LENA: Why was he checking up on you?
Jimmy knew I had a fight with my dad.
I told Dad I was dropping
out of med school
and he got really mad.
Jimmy was at the shop,
heard my dad yelling at me.
Jimmy sounded weird that day,
said he had messed up
but he would make it right.
DANNY: Messed up how?
My dad helped him out of some debt.
He promised he would quit the drugs
and work at the store and the warehouse
to pay my dad back.
Jimmy said he owed a guy some money.
Did he say this guy's
name was Travis Neil?
- He didn't tell me the name.
- But why didn't you
mention any of this
to my partner before?
ULA: Jimmy is a good person.
With bad luck. He loved my dad.
Yeah, but withholding from the cops
doesn't make Jimmy look innocent,
it only makes you look guilty.
Where is the warehouse?
Old warehouse near Copp's Hill.
Not sure of the address.
I'll see if I can run it down.
Try not to leave out anything else.
I promise there's nothing else.
I believe you.
Ula, your father was holding
lady slipper orchids
in his hand when he died.
They grew on his family's
property in China.
He saw them every morning from
his bedroom window growing up.
Said he had always
wanted me to see them.
I think that's why he brought them.
For you.
That was his surprise.
And it's my guess that
it was a peace offering
after your fight.
He was so disappointed.
That's the last thing he said to me.
He was so disappointed.
Here's what you do.
You order lady slipper orchids.
You lay them at the funeral.
And then every year,
on the anniversary of
your father's passing,
you put slipper orchids on his grave
and you remember that he loved you,
that he was proud of you.
And you remember your
best times together.
