Housing Complex C (2024) s01e04 Episode Script

The End of the Line

1
[rain pattering]
[knocking]
- What are you doing out, Kimi?
- Koba, take this
and read it right away, okay?
- Uh
Isn't this Taka's?
Wait, Kimi!
- See you later!
[spooky music]

Read that if you're ever
in trouble.
Okay, Kan?
- Hmm.
[heartbeat thumping]
- Will the wheel actually come
full circle?
What do you think?
What will happen?
Mommy?
[fast beeping]
You don't think anything at all,
do you?
All right, Koba.
You better get
to reading those notes.
- [exhales]
What did Taka get himself into?
"I bequeath this testament
to Kizo Kobayashi,
known to his friends as Koba."
What is this?
A last testament?
"Forgive me, Koba.
I've learned too much.
"The weight of my knowledge
has become unbearable.
I beg your forgiveness
for dumping this in your lap."
- If there's anyone who won't
lose sight
of what's most important
It is you, my friend.
And so
Oh, this almost looks
like C's
Did Hideo draw these?
Why would he make such horrors?
Oh, is this his writing?
"Sea god left,
a corpse remains,
no katamiwake."
So that's what it meant.
I had no idea.
How wrong I was.
Kurosaki's god wasn't
the sea god Kuzululu,
and its power
never passed through
the Kurosaki.
I was wrong about everything.
"The sea god left."
More like,
"The sea god departed."
It didn't pack its bags
and leave a corpse behind.
It departed this world.
Kuzululu is the corpse.
Kuzululu's worshipers
and followers dreamed
of resurrecting
their fallen god.
The mementos they shared--
the katamiwake--
were offerings of fish.
Originally,
it was their own bodies
that they offered as katamiwake.
The funeral procession
was a ritual
for human sacrifices.
It wasn't their loved ones
they hoped to bring back,
but their god.
Now, what of Kurosaki's god
and its ability
to resurrect other gods?
Kurokado holds the key.
This term has had
many meanings over the years.
One of them is "rainbow."
The summer sun showers we get
in Kurosaki often result
in rainbows at dawn.
The rainbows themselves
are huge gates
that mark the location
of a sacred space.
To my surprise,
that sacred space was not
at the summit
of Kurosaki's mountain
but at the base
of Housing Complex C.
When the rainbow fades,
so does its power.
To not only capture it
but to display it,
there would need to be
a huge physical gate
on those hallowed grounds.
The song said the Kurokado
would be wrapped
in verdant moss.
The large moss-covered stones
in the garden would
have once been part of such
a monumental Kurokado,
but isn't it strange?
Those stones are white just like
what you get if you mix all
the colors of the rainbow.
[gasps]
And yet they're
called Kurokado--
black gate--despite
the fact that they're white.
They should be called Shirokado,
or "white gate."
At least the stone's inscription
has it right.
Based on the lettering,
it must have
been carved long ago.
How did something that's clearly
a shirokado become a kurokado?
Was it a simple mistake?
An attempt
to hide heretical beliefs?
Or did some all-powerful being
simply wish for white
to become black?
No, I should drop it.
The very thought
of it makes me queasy.
In any event,
there can be no doubt that
the human sacrifices continued
long enough
for white to become black.
Now, the underground store room
that connects
to an ancient cave.
I realize the space
was dug out
to allow easier access
the the Shirokado.
[grunting]
While exploring the cave,
I eventually found
a second chamber hidden
behind piles of junk.
There I discovered a doorway
that could only
be revealed using
an artifact.
[loud rumbling]
The chamber that followed
showed Kurosaki's true mythology
through murals and writing.
These engravings,
I recognize this script!
It's from
a prehistoric language!
Seems to be a written record
of an oral history.
Hold on!
I can read this!
I'll spare you
the mythological details.
What matters are the passages
that describe the god worshiped
by the Shirokado followers.
With the morning sun showers,
their god would arise
from the rainbow gate.
It could start
natural disasters,
resurrect gods,
or even manipulate time
and space.
Its power knew no bounds.
A mere sea god
was beneath its notice.
The sky god--or more accurately
the god from another world--
is described as an omnipotent,
eternal, supreme being.
Going back to the song,
the lyrics were,
"Iyoyoloki soyohosu,"
not "yorokobi moyoosu."
It was never
about anything joyful.
Iyoyoloki was actually
the name of the god itself.
I'm sure its original spelling
and pronunciation
has been lost to history
so for now let's go
with Iyoyoloki Soyohosu.
You might be wondering how
this all connects
to what's been happening
at Housing Complex C.
I won't beat around the bush.
Iyoyoloki Soyohosu is alive.
Not only that,
but that god's at the heart
of all the strange occurrences.
Sensing Iyoyoloki's power,
the descendants
of Kuzululu's followers
have been leaving
dead fish around
as katamiwake,
and having mistaken
the sky god's miracles
as a sign of Kuzululu's rebirth,
they've been mutilating animals
and leaving the carcasses around
the complex as the ultimate act
of blasphemy.
The most obvious evidence
of Iyoyoloki Soyohosu's power
is the moss.
Moss is a symbol of eternity.
If you had the godlike power
to bend time and space
to your will,
it would be a simple feat
to transform the remains
of a living creature into
a pile of moss by giving it
a taste of eternity.
I'm sure that deep down
you already realized
that both Momo
and Yoshiken are dead.
The moss we found
in their rooms
is all that was left
of their corpses.
[shouting]
It must be hard for you
to grasp my certainty in this
or why I would be so terrified
of this god from another world.
[breathing heavily]
[gasps]
My confidence comes
from the proof I found
of this god's miracles.
As far as we know,
this is the year 2000,
but I found objects
that say otherwise.
Kurosaki seems
to have been left behind
as the world around us seems
to have moved many years ahead
of us.
When an item from
the outside world finds
its way here,
it serves as proof.
Once I realized this,
I was horrified
and lost my will to go on.
I'm done with these gods
and with this life.
I hope you're getting
a good laugh out
of how foolish I've been.
Do you get it now?
Iyoyoloki Soyohosu
has been here all along.
- Close enough
to touch this whole time.
It's been strutting around,
acting like a king among us.
Think about it for a second.
Why would we love
that girl so wholeheartedly
but not give a single thought
to her family or her mother,
and never meddle in her affairs?
It must be in the god's power
to charm or mesmerize others,
shifting attention away
from its true nature
like optical illusions.
Maybe that's why
she liked them so much.
I know what you're thinking,
but please don't get
the wrong idea.
The only thing she wanted
was for everyone to be friends.
Humans can never hope
to comprehend what goes on
in the mind of a god,
but I bet it truly enjoyed
its days here
with all its heart.
That must be why it preserved
Housing Complex C
in the peaceful year 2000,
but now a darkness
from the outside world
has shattered that tranquility.
The cause of all our pain--
the ones behind every
mismatched button--
is that family.
- [exhales]
- The god is baffled
by their malice.
It can't decide whether
or not it should smite them.
[crow cawing]
I can only pray it makes
the right decision
because if it doesn't
[grunting]
- Freakin' dammit.
How could I have missed
something so obvious?
I knew there was something off
about those two,
but I never got it down!
The Shirokados.
Yoshimi and her daughter Kimi.
Even their surname was a clue.
It's the same
as those moss-covered stones.
I can't believe
I forgot about her.
Yoshimi Shirokado.
She was pregnant
when she arrived here,
just about to burst.
Couldn't tell you who
the father was.
She had no idea,
and when she became depressed,
she locked herself away.
We didn't notice what
had happened.
Nah, it's none of our business.
At the end of the day,
Kimi is Kimi.
She's still
our cute little girl.
So what if she's some kind
of monster god?
We have to keep her safe!
Kimi, it's Koba!
Open up!
You're in danger!
I have to get you somewhere sa--
[slicing]
[groaning]
[thuds]
[suspenseful music]
- [snickering]
- If something
really scary happens,
please read the words written
on this paper.
It's your only choice
in this situation.
I'm sure that your god
will forgive you because
of that.
I'm sorry I got you involved.
Thank you,
my dear Kan.
- Hmm.
[grunts]
[door squeaks]
Uh
[suspenseful music]
[grunts]
Hmm.
Huh?
[door creaks]
Mr. Koshide?
[door squeaks]
[gasps]
- Run!
[groans]
- [giggles]
- [gasps]
[both grunting]
[slicing]
- It sounded like someone
warned him about us.
Oh, well.
There's only a few more to kill.
[gasps]
[grunts]
[blow lands]
[squelching]
[door creaks]
- Koba!
[gasps]
Why is--
- Kimi, dear!
- [screams]
- [grunts]
- [shouts]
- Good evening!
Sorry to be a bother.
[laughs maniacally]
You can all be human sacrifices
to my god!
- Run!
[both grunting]
- [gasps]
[both groaning]
- Don't worry about me, Kimi!
Run!
Why are you doing this?
Why?
- Get off me, Yuri!
[both grunting]
Yuri!
- [grunting]
- [groaning]
[both grunting]
- [snarls]
- [whimpering]
Forgive me!
If-if I fail to kill you,
I'm afraid
that my husband won't
- [gasps]
- [gasping]
[coughing]
Won't praise me
for a job well done!
- [groaning]
- [cackling]
[screeches]
- [groans]
- [giggling]
Ah!
[both grunting]
[shouts]
[grunts]
- [gasps]
[both grunting]
- [gasps]
- [breathing heavily]
[grunting]
[groans]
[exhales sharply]
Ah!
Kimi!
[breathing heavily]
[both grunting]
- [breathing heavily]
- [giggles]
- What are you doing
to Mr. Koshide?
[both laughing]
- Yuri, well done.
- [giggles]
- You're such a good actor, Dad.
- [grunts]
- Hah, looks like our
performance really stumped him.
I'll put him down quickly.
- I'll leave you to it, then.
I'm off
to kill sweet little Kimi.
- Kill Kimi?
- [giggles]
- [grunts]
- [exhales sharply]
- [shouts]
[both grunting]
- [shouting]
- [laughs]
[inhales sharply]
So delightful.
[snickers]
- Honey, I'm hurt.
- Hmm?
- [breathing erratically]
- Oh, what happened, honey?
- [winces]
- Someone broke your arm?
- He did.
That asshole is responsible.
- Oh, did he?
Then you need to return
the favor tenfold.
- [gasps]
[stammers]
You're joking, right?
You can't expect me
to do it.
Not with my broken arm,
and you know how tough he is.
- If you can't
even manage something
as simple as this,
you'll never survive
in our deity's new world.
Don't tell me.
You're more afraid
of that man child than you are
of me and our god!
- [gasps]
What?
Me, afraid?
Of course not!
[stammers]
I'm not afraid.
I'm not afraid of him.
I'll kill him just like
I killed all those others.
And gladly!
[giggling]
- [gasps]
[grunts]
- [shouts]
[both grunting]
[groans]
[both shouting]
- [grunts]
[both shouting]
- [gasping]
[thuds]
[both grunting]
- [shouts]
- [groaning]
- [breathing heavily]
K-Kimi!
[both breathing heavily]
- [groans]
[grunts]
[both breathing heavily]
- [grunting]
- [gasps]
- [breathing heavily]
Something must have happened
to my dad,
and now even Kan is after us?
[gasps]
- We were all supposed
to live happily ever after.
[whimpering]
- Snap out of it, Kimi.
Let's crawl inside.
Kan's too big for it, remember?
- Why, Yuri?
- What do you mean?
Don't you remember?
I'm your big sister.
- Not that.
Why-why are you smiling?
- [giggles]
You caught that, huh?
- [gasps]
- Don't worry, Kimi.
I'll keep you safe.
No one else will hurt you.
Die!
- [gasps]
[both grunting]
- [breathing heavily]
- Don't go, Kimi!
Do you wanna play?
Now that I'm finally able
to drop the nicey-nice,
we can have some real fun!
- [panting]
- [laughing maniacally]
Daddy loves our god so much
and Mommy loves doing
as she's told, but me?
I love making nicey-nices
like you scream
while bleeding them dry!
- No!
- Do you have any idea how hard
it was to play nice for so long
when I hate you all so much?
[inhales sharply]
But it was all worth it
because now
I can finally make you suffer!
- [breathing heavily]
Please, stop!
- [cackling]
That's right!
Fend for your life!
I'm gonna chop
your head clean off!
Then I'll preserve
it in formaldehyde.
That way whenever
I'm feeling down,
I'll have your cute crying face
to cheer me up!
[inhales sharply]
But to start,
I think I'll rip out
your fingernails one by one!
[inhales sharply]
I'm gonna get you!
Huh?
Hmm?
Huh?
[thunder claps]
[gasps]
[gasping]
[grunts]
What the hell?
- Mommy.
- Huh?
- You wanted to meet her.
This is my mommy.
- Huh?
[crunches]
[gasps]
- All right,
I'm done.
[glass clatters]
- [gasping]
- I'm tired of this place
and everything else,
and for a while there
it was going so well.
- Acting like you're not scared?
I'm about to cut your head off,
and I'll do it
while you're still breathing!
But first I'll bring my mom
and dad down here so they
can have fun torturing--
- Good idea.
Let me get them for you.
- Huh?
- Here.
Let's start with your dad's arm.
[thuds, squelches]
- Huh?
[gasps]
- Now his other arm.
[squelches]
- And his right leg.
- [gasps]
- And this is your mom's left--
no, right thigh.
- Wh-what is this?
- It's part of a torso.
- That's not what I mean!
What are you doing?
[squelches]
- That was kinda fun.
- [gasps]
It got boring real quick,
though.
Here's the rest of them.
[rumbling]
- [gasping]
[squelching]
- [screaming]
[screaming continues]
- I found it very stimulating
learning so much living among
your species
and experiencing your kindness.
It would be nice for
at least one compassionate world
to exist in the infinite realms.
- [whimpers]
- But time and time again,
humans somehow manage
to ruin anything worthwhile.
The Shirokado,
Housing Complex C.
- Wait.
I don't understand what is
- Aww, you're rather stupid,
aren't you, Yuri?
That's okay.
Some stupidity is expected.
Those fish people who expect me
to resurrect my scion simply
because they worship me,
the Shirokado who thought
earning my favor
would render them invincible,
and Housing Complex C
who hate each other
over mismatched buttons.
Kurosaki's residents
who've repeated
the year 2000 20 times now--
every last one
of them are stupid.
And that's fine.
It's simple-minded naivete.
Then you and your family used
the power
of a lesser god for a slaughter.
Usually that wouldn't bother me,
either,
but you failed to comprehend
the depth of that power.
Your stupidity allowed it
to claim Kurosaki.
That I cannot abide.
Your father truly believed
that performing
human sacrifices using
that ceremonial knife
would earn him the favor
of my progeny.
He was wrong.
All it can do is summon things
from the deep,
making no distinction between
what is or isn't corrupted.
He never did realize what he
was actually conjuring
with that pathetic dagger.
- [gasping]
- The bodies turning
into piles
of moss was not a sign
of my brood's return.
That was all my doing
to hide it from the others.
I didn't want them to be sad.
- You are--
- All I wanted was for everyone
to exist harmoniously
but your stupid family
ruined that.
You idiots went
and ruined everything.
And why?
What was the meaning
behind your schemes?
I simply could not fathom what
you hope to accomplish.
Curiosity got the better
of me so I waited,
but you just wanted
to break things, didn't you?
All that waiting for nothing.
- [gasping]
- Come now.
Haven't you figured it out?
- [gasps]
You're a-a god?
A god.
You're a god!
[giggling nervously]
My god!
I can't believe it!
Gods really exist!
Gods really do exist!
[sniffling]
Powerful and terrible and evil
and wonderful gods are real!
[screams]
[whimpering]
Forgive me, o Lord!
I'm sorry for the horrible
things I did to you!
I am sorry
for saying that I hated you!
Why didn't you say so?
If only I'd known sooner
that you were such
an awesome and perfect being!
I'll do anything.
Whatever you want,
no matter how awful it is!
I'll slaughter as many
as I have to!
I'll pillage
for your absolute delight!
Please, Lord!
Give me your blessings!
[vomiting]
- You still don't understand.
- [gagging]
- Only one thing
for me holds meaning: eternity.
That's all.
For millennia I observed
your petty lives
judging humanity's worthiness
of eternity.
After 20,000 years,
I've seen enough.
Time and again,
selfish humans like you caused
the downfall
of your own societies.
You were unfit for eternity.
Maybe the spark I once saw
in your race was nothing
but an optical illusion.
[whooshing]
Know this!
Due to your stupidity,
the fate your kind was hoping
to avoid comes one step closer.
- [gagging]
[squelching]
- The vessel overflows.
The illusion fades away.
The impotence
of the moment gives way
to the omnipotence
of the eternal.
In the end,
was I the fool,
senselessly clinging
to idle hopes?
And with that,
everything ends.
- [groaning
[gasps]
[grunting]
- My Lord,
please forgive me.
I must do this if I am
to survive.
Please bless me.
On Gthrod'ai'k geb'ey'k!
Yyrg-Sorhoth ngah'
ngai' yzhro'k!
[whooshing]
[distant birds cawing]
[groans]
[grunting]
[gasps]
Kimi.
Anyone?
[grunts]
[gasps]
[groans]
[grunts]
Mm?
[wind howling]
Goodbye.
- [inhales sharply]
[singing in Japanese]
[Kimi Shirakado's
"Kurosaki hahuriuta"]
