[bugs chirping]
[wind blowing]
[Ganta]
First open the aperture
Then the ISO
I guess this is good.
And then maybe 20 seconds
for the shutter speed?
Switch the focus to manual
[shutter click echoes]
[opening theme]
[all] Cheers!
[upbeat music]
Delish!
There's nothing like the
taste of bubble tea
after finishing a test.
Yes, ma'am!
Hmm? What's wrong?
Yours looks so much tastier.
Give me a sip?
You're always wanting
stuff that isn't yours, Kani.
Uh, excuse me?
You act like
I'm such a little jerk.
Ooh, she's not denying it.
Huh?
Here, don't just stop at one.
Take two or three sips
if you want.
Well, you are being
awfully generous today.
Feeling confident
about the test?
[chuckles]
Nothing good ever comes
from fretting about something
that's over and done with.
It's better to just
keep moving forward.
[Isaki] Bubble tea rocks!
[Kanikawa] So I'm not the
only one who struggled.
That's what you say,
but you always end up
with good scores.
10 more minutes.
Even five minutes
would've been enough
to solve the problem,
but I got distracted.
[upbeat music continues]
[Kanikawa groans]
[soft gasp]
[Ganta yawns]
[growling]
[Hakui] All right, time's up.
Pass your papers to the front.
[upbeat music continues]
[soft gasp]
[Kanikawa] What is his deal?
It drives me nuts!
No amount of studying
can beat that genius!
But whatever!
I've got more charm and beauty!
-Yep!
-And a better personality too!
Sure.
Oh, speaking of Ganta,
I should tell you I
joined the Astronomy Club.
I thought the Astronomy Club
at our school was shut down.
It was, but it made a comeback!
Ganta is the club president
and I'm a member.
Nurse Kurashiki is our advisor
and we have an alumna
helping out.
Wow. So you do star
gazing and stuff like that?
[Isaki] That's right.
And we're gonna have
a meteor shower
viewing party in August!
You guys should all come!
It's gonna be held
at school at night.
[all] A night event at school?
[both] Count me in!
I have no interest in stars
and stuff,
but being in the school
at night sounds crazy.
I'm totally in!
Too bad the club president
totally sucks.
[Anamizu] You're a broken
record, Kani.
[Nono] I mean,
she is a little jerk.
[Kanikawa] Not you too, Nono!
[all laugh]
[Kanikawa] Aw, jeez!
[NANAO PORT FESTIVAL]
[pensive music]
[cicada chirping]
-[Nono] So, hey.
-[both] Hmm?
Have you guys ever heard of
the "Seven Fateful Bridges"?
A ghost story? Let's hear it.
Tell us!
Oh, it's nothing spooky.
Just a legend that's been
passed down at school.
Legend says that if
you take your crush
across the seven bridges over
the Misogi River in silence,
the two of you will
be bound together
-by mutual love forever.
-[Isaki] Huh
[Anamizu] Well, if
you're spending the time
to cross seven bridges together,
then you're already a couple.
[Kanikawa] Totally.
It doesn't make sense.
Yeah, but
[all] Sounds dreamy.
[Kanikawa] Hey.
Um, what?
I need practice holding hands
for a date at the fireworks.
That's just sad.
Whatever, hold it tight!
Oh jeez, that's way too tight!
You're such a gorilla lady,
I swear!
[Anamizu] What did you say?
At last year's Port Festival,
I volunteered to
help out with
the paper lantern march
for little kids
and walked with them up and
down the river three times.
Oh wow, I was
watching during that part.
There were a ton of
really pretty lanterns.
[fireworks booming]
A fireworks date is so romantic.
I'm sure it would be a
memory that lasts a lifetime.
You dream of it too,
don't you, Isaki?
[sighs] Yeah.
Except I don't know if fireworks
would actually hold
his attention.
It almost sounds like
you have someone in mind.
[Isaki stammers]
Hmm
You want to take a camera
on the school's camp trip?
I bet that's against
the rules though.
[Ganta] Can I get special
permission
through the student council?
-I'll look into it.
-Thanks, man.
You can take pictures
of the stars?
I've been practicing, but I
haven't quite gotten it down.
I'm gonna visit our mentor
again tomorrow and learn more.
Do you think I can
come with you?
Well
My job hasn't started yet.
Hmm
Hey, hold on!
You're too late.
[Ukegawa groans]
You see, when I lose my bishop,
I do not wanna play anymore.
[moans]
By the way, Ganta,
what's been going on with
you and Isaki lately?
What do you mean?
Like I said before, we're
in Astronomy Club together.
I'm the president and
Isaki's a regular member.
Well, Isaki's a sweet girl
who's always bubbly, right?
Not to mention
a total hottie.
I mean, she's not really
the type I go for,
but you two are always
together doing club stuff.
Don't you feel
a little something?
[upbeat music]
[Ganta groans]
Just think about
the fireworks show.
It'd be awesome to go on
a date as a couple, right?
Yeah, well,
fireworks are nothing more
than a chemical reaction.
I think they're boring.
[Ukegawa laughs]
What's funny?
My plan to rattle you worked.
Oh crap!
And now it looks
like we're even.
You want to bet
something on this, Ganta?
[Ganta] Fine, a large
serving at Hachiban Ramen.
[Ukegawa] You're on.
[Ganta moans]
[SIGNAL FOR PEDESTRIANS
AND CYCLISTS]
Dang, it's hot.
I probably should have gotten
chilled noodles instead,
but the ramen was good.
Hey, man. Don't complain
about a free meal, okay?
[Kanikawa] Wait, isn't
that Ganta over there?
Uh
[light pensive music]
Mm
[crossing sign beeps]
[Isaki grunts]
Yeah. Smooth.
[mouse clicks]
[items shuffling]
You've been taking
a ton of pictures.
I can't get through all of them.
[Ganta] Well, all I
can say is that
I'm really good
at staying up late.
[Yui] Hmm?
Wow. These are beautiful shots.
You took these
at Kamariyama Park?
[screams] Who the hell are you?!
My name is Ukegawa.
[Ganta] Uh, he's
a friend of mine.
What a load of crap!
I don't believe for a second
that Ganta has friends!
Hmm?
[GAMING ARCADE]
[mellow music]
Pretty solid job for it
being your first time tenting.
Okay, now try dismantling it.
What do you think
of my pictures?
Hmm
This one was exposed
for too long,
which made it bright enough
to look like daytime.
This one has some noise.
You have to consider light
pollution from the city,
by adjusting your ISO
settings at each location.
Oh, that has nice composition.
We call this "looks
good on the surface."
But after you enlarge it,
you notice all the
stars are blurry.
So it was never
properly in focus.
Whoa. Talk about
a strict teacher.
[mellow music continues]
Ganta's feeling a
little down right now.
That's how it goes for
everyone at the start.
[Ganta groaning]
I've gotta open the shop now.
You can wait at my place.
Roger.
Hmm, actually, I need to
get ready for my shift,
so I should probably go.
[door opens, closes]
Huh?
[mellow music continues]
[footsteps approach]
[tent shuffling]
[Ganta] Hey, quit it!
[zipper opening]
Didn't you hear me?
I told you to cut
it out, Ukegaw-
[Isaki laughs]
[Ukegawa] Third wheels
should just roll out.
[door opens]
[AC beeps]
[Isaki sighs] Nice and cool.
[Ganta] Yui said she'd join us
after finishing all the
prep for opening the arcade.
Yeah?
Hmm.
Hmm
What kind of notes
are you keeping?
Uh, well, the camera
settings that I used
and all the photography
stuff that Yui taught us.
Really? Let me see, let me see!
[ASTRONOMY CLUB]
[yelps]
It's a giant wall of text!
Just reading a little
bit made my head spin.
With that much effort, you'll
be an ace at this in no time.
It's not that simple.
-[Isaki] Oh, why is that?
-[Ganta] Even if she teaches me
the best settings for pictures
of the sky I've already taken,
the next sky I see is going
to be totally different.
Developing a good intuition
for it is difficult.
There will never be another sky
exactly like today
It's frustrating.
All my pictures are failures.
I hope I can do
better next time.
Uh [chuckles]
-Right. I gotta do my part too.
-[Ganta] Hmm?
We still need a poster
to help advertise
for the meteor shower
viewing party.
[bright music]
[markers squeaking]
There, it's done.
Ta-da!
[Ganta] Huh? Are those eggs?
It's the Perseid meteor
shower, obvi!
If you're gonna complain,
then show me something better!
Huh
[bright music continues]
[Ganta sighs]
-Here.
-[Isaki] So tiny!
[Ganta] Can't we just
make a poster
that only has the
information written on it
with no pictures?
It has to be something that
will draw people's attention
and get them excited.
Ah, this is totally hopeless
if neither of us
has any drawing skills.
We're gonna need to
call in some backup.
Hey, is that computer yours?
[Ganta] It's a
hand-me-down from Yui.
She told me to download the
data of my pictures on it.
Oh? Let's see.
Oh
[Isaki] Wow!
This looks really pretty!
It's utter garbage.
No, it's good.
Oh, I know this!
It's where they hold
the fireworks show.
Yeah, the Nanao Port Festival.
[Ganta gasps softly]
[bright music continues]
Huh?
[Ganta gasps]
Hey!
Don't stare at my hair!
It makes me self-conscious!
[Ganta] Uh, sorry
[bright music continues]
I was just thinking
we should go see
the fireworks together.
-Huh?
-Oh!
It's just 'cause Yui
told me that
taking pictures of fireworks
would be good practice!
That's fine with me!
[Ganta] Ah, really? Thank you.
[Isaki stammers]
Right back at you!
[Ganta] Shucks, I gotta make
sure not to forget the camera.
[Rollo meows]
[Isaki] Yeah!
Since this is
for practice and all
[Ganta] I mean, we'll
watch the fireworks,
but only for practice.
[Yui groans] I need to go in,
but I don't wanna interrupt.
[bright music ends]
[EPISODE 4: VENUS]
[school bell rings]
[Isaki] Wow! This cover
drawing you did is awesome!
[Hakui] I'm going to explain
the seaside camp
schedule now.
[Nono laughs]
It'll be a two-night,
three-day trip.
The first day we'll
meet here at school
and board the bus at 7:45.
At 10:00 AM, we'll arrive
at the Chirihama lodge.
11:30, each group will
prepare their campsite.
Dinner at six,
each group will steam
their own rice and cook curry.
Mr. Hakui, how are
you deciding the groups?
[Hakui] By alphabetical order.
[both] Ugh.
That means we're in
the same group!
Hooray!
[both laugh]
I'm gonna hang out
with your group, Haida.
Hell yeah. Party!
It'll be sick, my dude!
[Ganta] Rui Haida
Oh, hope we get along,
Nakamicchi.
Yeah, right.
This blows. I can't believe
I have to spend three whole
days
in the same group
as this buffoon.
We're camping near
the ocean, right?
Our group should go fishing
and make some killer
seafood curry!
It would be epic if
somebody caught a crab!
Days two and three,
you'll all be going for
an early morning jog
on the beach.
[all] What?!
[students groan]
[Hakui] So don't
wear yourselves out
by staying up too late.
[student 1] Oh, God.
[student 2 sighs]
So much for having fun.
[pensive music]
[EVACUATION AREA]
[SAKURAMACHIJIDO PARK]
[kickstand clanks]
[phone buzzing]
[Ganta] Huh?
[phone buzzing]
Ukegawa.
[INCOMING CALL, UKEGAWA]
[Ganta] Hey, what's up?
[Ukegawa] Huh? Are you outside?
[Ganta] Yeah. I was going to
try and take more pictures,
but there are too many
clouds out tonight.
I'm headed home.
[Ukegawa] Well, I just
called to apologize.
Sorry, we couldn't get
permission for you
to bring a camera
to the seaside camp.
It's okay. I figured
that's how it would go.
We're working in groups anyway,
so it makes sense that
I wouldn't be allowed
to go off and do
astronomy stuff.
[Ukegawa] Just make sure
none of the teachers find out
if you try anyway.
Yeah. Right now
the forecast says
it's going to be cloudy every
day during the seaside camp.
[Ukegawa] You can't take
any pictures when it's cloudy?
[Ganta] Nope.
They get in the way.
I haven't been able to
take any shots this week
-because of the clouds.
-[Ukegawa] Hold up.
You've gone outside at
night every day this week?
Yep.
[Ukegawa] Gotta say,
you've been doing
some gutsy stuff lately.
Yeah, I guess so.
Maybe I haven't been
myself lately.
[Ukegawa]
Don't celebrate too hard
just because you scored
a date with Isaki.
[gasps] It's not a date!
She's just coming with me to
take pictures of the fireworks.
It's good practice for
astrophotography.
[Ukegawa scoffs] Yeah, right.
Goodnight, man.
[Ganta] Uh, hey!
[bike gears clicking]
[Haida] Huh?
Was that Nakamicchi?
[gentle music]
[rain pouring]
Ah, why is my hair so stiff?
I flat ironed it and everything!
[yawns] Days like this
always make me feel sleepy.
I heard it's 'cause of
a drop in pressure.
That's what they say.
You must be the most
carefree people on the planet.
How do you do it?
Dang, can't sleep through
next period since it's home ec.
So the weather is supposed
to be like this all week.
Ah, I wonder if the seaside camp
will end up getting canceled.
I sure hope so.
[Anamizu] They said it's
happening rain or shine.
[Kanikawa] I don't wanna
go camping in this!
-[Anamizu] Ugh, what a pain.
-[Nono] Good morning!
Good morning.
You're pretty late
getting here, Non-
Sorry. Do I know you?
Gosh, the rain always
makes my hair stiff
and such a frizzy mess.
[Kanikawa] I'd say that's
more than just frizzy!
[Anamizu] It's like a
bird nest on your head!
[Isaki] Can I touch it?
[Nono] Sure!
[girls laugh]
[rain pouring]
[teacher] Those of you who
have finished your aprons
should consider
making something else
from the leftover scraps
of cloth.
[pensive music]
[Ganta yawns]
[Kanikawa] Looks like
he's about 80% finished.
[pensive music continues]
[sewing machine whirring]
I'm gonna beat him!
Today is the day I leave
Ganta in the dust!
I'm done! I finished mine!
Huh?!
[Kanikawa whimpering]
I'm finished.
[Kanikawa yells]
[rain pouring]
[Haida] So, like, I swear
that's where it was.
That's where I saw it last.
But when I looked
it was already gone.
[friend] Dang. Hey, I gotta pee.
[Haida scatting]
[Ganta groans]
Just making my own white noise
like the girls' toilets
with buttons that'll play the
sound of a waterfall
for privacy. You feel me?
[zipper zips]
News to me.
You're an honors student,
right, Nakamicchi?
[Ganta] Hm?
[pensive music]
I saw you the other day.
Loitering in the
middle of the night
is total delinquent behavior.
Where were you rushing
off to on your bike
with a filled backpack, dude?
It was sus AF.
[Ganta] Are you going
to tell on me?
Are you dumb?
I'd get in trouble
with the teachers
just as much as you
for being out.
Screw that.
[toilet flushes]
Uh
That was an interesting
conversation.
Uh, hi, Mr. Hakui.
[Hakui] Let's have a
little chat in my office.
But first
wash your hands.
[pensive music continues]
All right, since both of you
seem sincerely remorseful,
I'm willing to let you off
with just a warning this time.
-[Ganta] I'm sorry, sir.
-[Haida] Sorry.
If you can't sleep at night,
then spend part of
your day working out.
Exercising leaves
your body feeling tired,
which puts you to sleep.
-Yes, sir.
-[Hakui] I get it.
Some days you just
can't fall asleep,
but if you get in bed and relax,
you will eventually fall asleep.
So learn to stick it out.
[Haida] Yes, sir.
[Ganta sighs]
[Hakui] Any healthy person
should get a good night's rest.
Otherwise it's a sign
they're messed up.
-YOU ASSHOLE!
-[Hakui] Huh?
[awkward groan]
[Hakui stammers]
[rain pouring]
[gentle piano music]
[Isaki] And done.
With this many charms, the
weather is sure to clear up.
[piano music continues]
Isaki, you can stop doing that.
The seaside camp will be
cloudy all three days.
There's just no way we're
getting any pictures.
Plus, I went and got on
Mr. Hakui's bad side.
We're screwed.
Absolutely nothing
is going well.
[piano music continues]
Enough with the doomsaying.
Let's make a promise.
If the weather
clears up at night,
we'll meet each other on
the beach under the stars.
[piano music continues]
Oh, hey, you should make a
teru teru bozu charm too!
[Isaki giggles]
[Ganta] Please
Please
let the weather clear up.
[rain pouring]
[Twosie meows]
[Isaki moans]
[shuffling]
Hey
[light sigh]
[rain pouring]
[heart beating]
[Isaki breathing softly]
[Isaki] The sound of
Ganta's heartbeat
really is the best.
[heartbeat continues]
[ending theme]
