Paul C. Brunson: Red Flag (2026) s01e04 Episode Script

Kathryn - I Chose Him Over My Kids

1
I've spent most of my adult life
helping people find and keep love,
working at the forefront of modern
dating
to study how we feel about the
partners we choose.
But I know relationships have a
darker side.
How are you doing? Lovely to meet
you.
I'm meeting survivors of toxic
relationships,
hearing their stories, and reliving
pivotal moments
to help reveal the red flags abusers
try to hide.
He just made me think that he was my
only option.
I naively thought he was just a bit
insecure in himself.
I felt stuck in that relationship
for so long.
When you are in it, you can't see
it. You cannot see it.
I hid a lot of things away because I
didn't want people to know.
A red flag is a warning sign,
and by spotting a red flag,
you not only protect your loved
ones, but you protect yourself.
I'm meeting Kathryn, a former
executive
and mother of two who survived seven
years of coercive control
and terrifying violence from her
husband Mark.
He hit me with everything in him.
Bam, bam.
My God, Kathryn.
I want to understand why Kathryn
remained trapped
in a violent relationship for almost
a decade.
I said to her, "You know what, Mum?
He's going to kill you one day."
I've got my teenage daughter being
difficult
about my lovely new boyfriend.
Can't you let me be happy?
And I want to hear how Kathryn dealt
with
the horrifying attack that left her
with a broken back.
How's that? Oh, really hurts.
I felt like I was standing on a
cliff of my life,
and I had to throw myself off it.
I didn't know if my mum was alive
or dead.
There she is.
Oh, Paul! How are you doing?
It's so lovely to meet you. Pleasure
to meet you.
I'm very much looking forward to
this.
You ready to have a conversation?
Absolutely. All right. After you.
My mum built up her success over
nearly 40 years up in the City.
Built herself up to be managing
director,
which was a really big thing,
because there weren't many female
managing directors at the time.
Worked very hard to give us our kind
of lifestyle.
We did everything together.
We had horses, and we'd go out for
family meals,
you know, really family-oriented.
Um
..and that wasthat was a great
time.
I was with my first husband for 32
years.
32 years?!
We met at 15, we got engaged at 18,
and I was married by 22,
and we split up when I was 47.
I've never been single in my life.
Never been single in your life.
Had you ever dated anyone other than
your husband?
No. No.
So, was your thought that you wanted
to be married again?
What was your idea? What was your
goal?
I felt kind of bereft, because I was
so used
to having somebody in my life.
So, I went onto dating sites pretty
much immediately.
And who pops up Mark.
Is he the first person that you
match with on the dating app? Yeah.
Yeah. The first person? Mm.
So, I messaged him.
She was very excited. She'd been
messaging for quite a long time.
They'd kind of built up some sort of
connection.
And, uh, she was nervous.
You could tell she really wants to
get it right for this guy.
When you met Mark, tell me about
that experience.
So, we'd arranged to meet in a pub.
As I walked in, he turns, and broke
into this,
you know, most amazing smile, and he
joked, actually,
because he was just so relieved that
I looked like my picture,
and I looked amazing, so
How does it make you feel?
Oh, it was like, wow, you know?
He was six foot four. I've found
exactly what I wanted.
That's what I thought. It felt like
I'd always known him.
Yes.
You said he was a big guy.
Did he project as if he was a tough
guy?
Oh, yeah. Alpha off the scale.
Alpha off the scale? Oh, my
goodness.
He would open doors for me.
You know, the gentleman side of it
was evident right from the
beginning.
OK. He also told the tales of how he
was a rugby player.
The toughest position on the pitch.
Right.
You know, how hehe was the
leader.
And I was quite happy with that.
I felt like he was going to really
protect me in life.
This is a red flag.
You see where he's really inserting
this dominance?
Yeah. Almost a power imbalance of
his physical prowess.
Yeah. Right.
And it's not just him saying it.
It's him inserting himself as the
dominant player in your
Yeah. ..relationship with him.
I wanted a, you know, a dominant,
you know,
alpha-type guy that I could look up
to, literally.
Yes.
Kathryn is taking me to the first
house
she and Mark lived in together,
just a few hundred yards from her
current home.
We are coming around to the back
garden.
This is where I first moved in with
Mark.
But it's where things started to go
wrong
as soon as I got into that house,
so it has a lot ofmixed memories
for me.
Good times and barbecues, and sat
outside there with Mark,
laughing and singing and, you know,
having really good times.
But II also see the times I had
to climb up onto that balcony
to get into my own house, like where
I've been locked out.
So, that fills me with dread, seeing
that.
If you think of one word to describe
how you feel about this house, what
would it be? Sad.
Really sad. Of what we could have
had here. Yeah, yeah. Really sad.
Did any of your friends see any
warning signs?
Yeah.
I get this call from a very dear
friend of mine.
She said, Kathryn, the guy that
you're with,
he threw her friend, his
ex-girlfriend,
out of the house in a very nasty
way.
My good friend was saying he's
well-known
for being a nasty piece of work.
Now, he had told me about the
ex-girlfriend,
and he told me that he had to ask
her to leave the house.
So, when she warned me about him, I
said,
"Well, actually, Mark did tell me
about this,
but his side of events is very
different.
I don't know who to believe."
This is a major red flag here. He's
discrediting the ex-partner.
I saw the big bad boy looking after
me.
And whenever I heard a story about
him being violent,
I just saw it was all part of the
tough guy persona I kind of liked.
Right.
When you met Mark, how many months
was it before he moved in?
We met in the January, and we were
just so inseparable,
and I asked him if he would like to
come and move in with me.
And this was in the July time.
OK.
I suggested, how about, you know,
move in in September?
And he said, "I don't want to move
in in September.
I want to move in now."
I went, "Oh, OK." Like
A sense of relief. Yeah.
Mark moved in very quickly when I
was 18 into the family house.
When Mark moved in, you know, the
whole atmosphere changed.
The state of my bedroom was an issue
for Mark.
He had a big problem, and he thought
I was just being disrespectful of
the space I lived in.
He came in when I was out, and he
would inspect the room.
He immediately started criticising
things that my son Tom was doing,
which rubbed my son up the wrong
way.
But I saw it as my son being
difficult.
Did you? Yeah.
And getting in the way of my
happiness.
I've got my teenage daughter being
difficult
about my lovely new boyfriend.
I've got my son who's in his early
20s saying the same thing.
You know, "Guys, can't you see I'm
happy?"
My kids were going, "Mum, this is
way too fast.
You just don't know this guy."
And I was just swept along on this
romance.
After six months of dating, Mark has
moved into Kathryn's family home.
I want to learn how his behaviour
changed after this milestone.
Did Mark ever tell you anything
about his past?
Yeah, yeah.
He took me aside when we were out
one day,
and he said, "Kathryn, there's
something I need to tell you."
Like, "Oh, God, what's he going to
tell me?"
And he said, "You know, I love you,
and I feel I need to tell you this."
He said, "I do have a criminal
record."
What happened was, it was on the
rugby pitch,
and he said a guy's jaw got broken.
He very much painted it as an
accident.
I thought, "How lovely of him to
come clean about his past."
I just saw it as someone who had
that honesty
and truthfulness about them that I
was looking for.
Yes.
I found out that the guy's jaw had
to be wired back together,
and there were broken teeth
involved.
OK, so, clearly a very violent act.
Yes.
And Mark disclosing this to you,
he's putting you
in a place where you feel as if
you're special,
because he is telling you this bit
of information, but really,
what he's doing is he's further
manipulating you,
and making you dismiss what is a
very serious warning sign.
Exactly, exactly, yeah.
What he then did was he went down on
his knee,
and he said, "Kathryn, will you
marry me?"
I met him in the January.
He'd moved in with me in thein
the summer.
This was November time.
I didn't even hesitate. "Absolutely,
yes. Absolutely, yes."
My fairy tale.
And that's why he'd told me about
his record.
Because he couldn't ask me to marry
him
if I didn't know the truth about
him.
Look at that.
But at the same time, we've already
identified countless red flags.
Why do you believe you saw none of
the red flags?
I just I guess I saw them.
I didn't like those behaviours, but
I loved him so much,
II just ignored them all.
But you go on this whirlwind romance
for a year.
You do want to be married, right?
Yeah. Tell me about that experience.
Mark took over.
Very soon, we were saying we're
going to sell this house,
and we're going to move into Mark's
house.
Yes. So, I see happiness in what
I've got planned with Mark.
Before we moved into Mark's house, I
said to Mum,
"You know, when we move here, it's
going to be his house, his rules."
But it just Having me there was
a problem for him.
I was so much in love with Mark, and
this new,
wonderful, glamorous life that we
had, making me feel so good.
Can't you let me be happy?
So, you have your children Yes.
..telling you Yes.
"..Mum" Yeah. .."Don't do this."
There were changes in Mum in those
months.
She became a little bit more distant
from us.
I didn't feel like I could talk to
her.
And our relationship very much hit
rock-bottom.
Mark said, "I've got an idea.
There's a plot at the end of the
driveway.
We'll get her a nice mobile home,
and it could be her first home."
You can see. Oh, my goodness,
Kathryn.
Just horrible.
She cried when she saw it.
It was a mess.
It had issues with the boiler, gas
leaking, things like that.
Obviously, I felt pushed aside.
I felt like I can't see my mum
anymore.
He didn't want the family there. He
just wanted him and Mum.
This is the most blatant red flag
around the isolation of children
I've ever seen.
Mm-hm. He literally separated you.
Yes.
From your children.
Placed them in a mobile home down
the street.
He's also making you ever more
dependent on him.
You can see how each move is taking
away everything that you feel,
and perceive is safe in your life,
and attaching him as the only
refuge.
Yes.
You know, I thought that we were
very much in love,
you know, and I felt I could trust
him.
Kathryn is driving me down the local
country lanes
where Mark's violent temper began to
show itself.
He had terrible road rage.
It felt like every time we got in
the car, it was a race.
If cyclists were in front slowing
him down,
I knew that he would buzz past them
at speed.
I was starting to get panic attacks
every time I got into the car.
I could literally see my heart
thumping in my chest.
And this is so interesting to me is,
in the car,
this is a major pivotal moment in
your story with Mark.
What happened down there?
We'd been out for the evening with
friends.
OK, so take me back to that moment.
As we started out up the lane,
I don't know whether it was a
blowout, or we hit something.
The first thing I knew was an
almighty crash.
We'd gone into an oak tree head-on.
That caused the car to go up in the
air, catapult over.
And then I found myself hanging
upside-down.
Smelt of smoke.
I thought I was going to burn to
death.
He got himself out, he leant across,
released my seatbelt,
and dragged me out through the
driver's side.
OK.
I was reaching across, trying to
pick up
my handbag from the footwell,
and he screamed at me to leave the
effing handbag,
but he said, "We're getting away
from here, leave it."
And then started to march away from
me, abandoning me.
So, you were faced with the decision
of, you could stay if you wanted to.
Yeah. But he wanted you to leave.
He clearly wanted to get away from
the vehicle.
Unfortunately, when I tried to stand
up,
I had an excruciating pain in my
right ankle.
I'd really badly done some ligaments
in.
Instead of comforting me when he saw
I could barely walk,
I was hauled all the way up.
It's a good five-mile walk on a
very badly injured ankle.
How scary was that for you?
Absolutely terrifying.
I'd just been in a really serious
car crash.
I was in shock, and I was in pain.
That is just absolutely gruelling.
I was absolutely sickened by the
episode.
You know? What a horrible thing to
do to someone.
And I was starting to feel scared of
him,
but not enough to pull out of the
wedding.
I'm going to ask the obvious
question.
Why?
Again, II still loved him
despite all of that.
I thought that I could fix him.
So, your career up until that point
is,
you've gone from strength to
strength in your career.
I was one of only 18 women MDs in
Europe at the time.
In the January of that year, I'd
received a six-figure bonus.
By the end of that year, I was on
the list for being made redundant.
And I was just, I was so I was so
upset.
Everything I'd ever worked for,
I'd fought my way up that ladder.
Guess what happened when I told him
that I was on the redundancy list?
And this was just before the
wedding.
He went absolutely crazy.
He screamed at me. "You just think
you can marry me and live off me?!
What are you going to get? What's
your redundancy payment?
When's this going to happen?" And I
didn't know the answers at the time.
Right. "Bullshit."
And he'd started shouting that over
me so I couldn't explain.
"Bullshit!" Louder and louder.
I mean, it's just incredible. Just
incredible.
And so, how long from that moment to
the wedding?
That was only months before. Only
months before?
Yeah.
This angst about my redundancy
started to cause
massive tension in the lead up to
the wedding.
I went up to bed one evening,
and he was looking for his water to
bring up with him.
He started to scream downstairs,
"Where's my effing water?!"
And I thought, "What have I done?
What have I done? Oh, my goodness."
And I stayed quiet, just listening.
Thud thud thud of like I have
just
"This could kill me, you know. What
have I done?"
And then I heard the smashing
starting downstairs.
Kathryn and Mark have been living
together for four months,
and Mark's temper is starting to get
out of hand.
He comes up the stairs.
And proceeds to tear off the wall
all the family portraits.
He burst into the room,
and proceeded to throw every
portrait at me.
The glass was going everywhere.
Yes.
This knuckle was exposed, and one of
the portraits hit it, and broke it.
So, that's my first break from Mark.
Oh, my goodness. You can see it's
different.
He only threw my family's pictures
at me,
and his daughters were all still up
on the wall, smiling away.
You see, this red flag here is this
targeted control.
He wasn't fully uncontrolled.
He selected your family photos,
threw your family photos at you
to show you how much dominance and
control he has in this scenario.
Yeah.
If you love someone, the first time
something happens,
you might just think, "Oh, that was
a bit of a freak thing, you know,
out of character."
So, she doesn't want to believe that
it's something
that's going to continue happening.
He would say to me, "You are the
only person that can deal with me.
"I know I'm not easy".
But it was like almost giving me a
hope that he would get better.
So, you went forward with the
wedding, invite friends and family.
His relationship with his mother was
non-existent,
and he'd painted her as such an evil
character.
And he wanted me to meet his mother.
So, we went to see the mother.
And when he went to the toilet,
she leaned forward in her chair, and
she went,
"Don't trust him."
The mum?!
And I go, "Do you know what your
mother's just said to me?
She's told me not to trust you."
He went, "Oh, she's crazy, you know.
That's why I don't see her."
But in the moment, when his mother
tells you don't trust him
Yeah. ..you still think she's off?
Yeah. He painted her as such an evil
character.
Yes. Look at that.
I know.
So, you went ahead and you married
him anyway? Mh-hm. I did.
Do you feel as if he was happy and
proud to be there with you?
Yeah, definitely. You know, he was
just so proud. Or he seemed to be.
Who among your community and Mark's
community showed up for the wedding?
Most of my friends and family, apart
from my son Tom,
my friend who'd warned me,
and also another friend who was,
like, a godmother to my children.
So, your son did not come to your
wedding? No.
No.
He said, "I'm so sorry, Mum, but I
just can't.
I can't abide that man, I can't
come."
What did you think about the fact
that your two best friends
and your son are not at your
wedding?
Well, I was hurt that they weren't
there.
So, your two best friends and your
son have chosen not to participate.
So, your community is starting to
isolate themselves from you? Yes.
Could we move to what happened after
the wedding?
I can't sort of paint this all as
terrible time.
You know, he would shower me with
all these wonderful holidays,
and experiences, and I mean, real
serious, wonderful holidays.
OK.
But things were being thrown about a
lot more.
Um, a chair was smashed up and
thrown across the kitchen,
but it wasn't thrown at me at that
point.
So, how long after the wedding? I
think it was five months.
Only Five months?!
So, I'm still thinking, "I know
Mark's like this.
I know he's got this side to him.
Yes. "This will all calm down."
We had an argument. I think it was
about Holly.
Usually was.
He threw a pint of water in my face.
He said, "Get out of my house."
And I said, "Well, it's not your
house.
It's This is my home as well now.
It's our house."
He went crazy.
Mark picked up a chair, like, you
know,
above his head to throw at me, and I
called my brother.
I said, "Howard, Mark's going crazy.
I don't feel safe."
I said, "Howard, call the police.
Call the police."
He picked me up by the neck, and
dragged me out of the house.
And I was hanging onto the door
frame.
I got scratched up in the doorway.
Bruises on my arms through the fight
to try and stay in there.
When we were married, he carried me
up through that threshold so
romantically.
And only five months later, I'm
scrambling,
holding onto that very same door to
stay inside the house
because I was being thrown out of
his house.
He physically threw me on the floor,
and slammed the door behind me.
We're going down the driveway
barefooted.
To get away. Faster I ran down here,
the better.
I mean, these stones. These are
sharp stones.
Yeah, they would cut up my feet.
Tom and Holly were in the mobile
home, caravan,
so I banged on the door.
They saw their mother, like,
bedraggled, blood.
Like, what the hell is I was
like, "Get out of here."
Very shocked when I see her cuts
and bruises.
Just couldn't believe it.
And she said, "Yeah, I'm not going
to go back with him."
I said, "Well, good. No one should
do that to you."
We just don't know what he's going
to do next.
Mark, he's clearly abusing you.
Physically and emotionally.
And also in that moment, another red
flag
where he's using the house as a
weapon.
He's saying, "You're no longer
safe here. This is not yours."
I had the crushing reality that I
had nowhere to go.
If he chose to throw me out like
that, I was homeless.
Calling the police on Mark,
that is, like, the worst thing I
could do to someone like him.
Yes. And I was in an absolute
existential moment then.
Can I call the police? So, in the
end, I said yes.
I just couldn't get a wink of sleep,
you know?
But Mark got arrested. He's kept in
overnight there.
He sent me a photograph after a few
days
of him with the wedding ring on.
Just a picture of his hand with the
wedding ring on.
Just incredible.
As soon as he saw me, he just
grabbed me in his arms,
and hugged me and, like, cried.
And he said, "My soulmate. I've
missed you so much."
And you know He didn't say sorry
for what he'd done to me, though.
Never a "I'm sorry"?
No. No, no.
I'd invested so much that, you know,
walking out and just leaving it
would have been a disaster for me.
He clearly wanted me to drop the
charges.
I see it.
And when I dropped the charges
against Mark,
the kids just couldn't believe that
I did it.
She went back with him, I think
after about a week,
Something'll happen and she'll say,
"I've left him",
and then go back with him, and I
didn't understand why.
I had no idea why you'd want to go
back
with someone who's showing this
level of violence.
He would get better again for a
while.
We'd go on a nice holiday, and I'm
hoping to have
the lovely guy that I thought I'd
married back all the time.
You still thought you would get the
good guy?
Yeah. Yeah.
Even after that? Yeah.
It didn't mean we weren't still
having the good times.
I still loved the guy. I know people
can't understand that.
What it sounds like you're depicting
is that then he begins to
carry you in that cycle of abuse
where "Oh, everything's OK."
Yeah. "Everything's fine."
Yeah, yeah. You're safe.
Stop fussing. You know, this is not
a big deal.
In 2021, we were coming back from
a really nice night out with
friends.
We pulled up in the car, and I'd
said something he disapproved of.
After a night out, he was starting
to get into my face,
and so I tapped him just literally
like that.
Just as you would to just, like
Get away from me.
And he responded by He hit me
with everything in him.
It wasn't just one punch.
It was a sustained attack.
He hit me over and over again in the
nose.
Bam, bam.
It was that brick hitting me.
As I staggered out of the car, I was
like, almost sneezing blood.
It was coming out all down my face,
dripping off my chin.
I mean, it was really a lot of
blood.
That was me as I came into the
kitchen.
These are truly some of the most
shocking photos I've ever seen.
I was in and out of consciousness
for a couple of days.
I was all over the place. My god,
Kathryn.
The nose was broken.
But I knew that if I took myself to
the hospital or called the police,
he could just attack me again like
that.
So, I pushed that nose back into
place.
You pushed your nose into place?!
I pushed it back into place.
When I later had it reconstructed,
the surgeon said to me he'd only
seen injuries like this once before.
He said that person was dead. They
were on a trolley.
I can just see it getting worse and
worse.
And the injuries were getting worse.
I was putting up with pretty much
anything,
and going back to him after some
horrendous attacks.
Yes. Because of that love when we
were together.
I said to her, "You know what, Mum,
he's going to kill you one day."
Mm.
And she said, "I know."
Mark's reign of terror only gets
worse for Kathryn.
In 2015, he throws her out into the
night.
In 2021, he punches her in the face
while she's driving.
By 2023, the violence has become a
horrifying routine.
We had an argument about money.
He got a bottle of wine, opened it.
Then I heard him thundering up the
stairs.
He burst into the room.
He kept smashing up my face with the
bottle,
and he managed to get that whole
bottle head into my mouth,
and he emptied the whole bottle
into, like, solidly
Glug glug glug glug glug.
It was coming out of my nose. I
was I was drowning.
He finished with the bottle, and
proceeded to smash up the room,
targeting all my things.
You can see the holes in the walls.
The blood on the key.
Ah.
The room looks like a war zone.
He went to my office, and started to
smash the office up.
So, this was truly your safe space?
I loved it in here. Yeah.
And he picked up my computer
and smashed it down on this desk.
That was
That was Yeah.
Sustained smashing.
Then he left.
And I thought, "Is this it?"
And I'm I'm just sitting there,
like, inside, terrified.
Laying on the bed. He's gone
downstairs.
I could hear it had gone quiet.
And I called Holly first,
and it was late at night, and she
didn't pick up.
I just happened to look down, and
there was a message,
and it read, "Help me, call the
police."
So, I tried to call her back
straightaway,
and she doesn't pick up.
And at that point, I called the
police.
I mean, my heart was, like, coming
out of my chest.
You know? I've got this dreaded
feeling in my tummy.
You feel sick, youyou don't
know what's happening.
I don't know what's happening.
The next thing I know, Mark burst
back into the room. Oh, my God.
He got hold of the iPad. He smashed
it to smithereens.
And then he attacked me.
That hard fist that had broken my
nose so badly,
he whammed it into my ribs here.
He broke these two in two.
Completely snapped.
They pinged off my kidney, and
caused a bleed on the kidney.
And then he hit me also here.
My goodness, Kathryn.
For an hour and a half, I didn't
know if my mum was alive or dead.
No one should have to do that.
WAILING
How's that? Oh!
It really hurts!
Stay still, stay still.
And I said, "We need to get you an
ambulance."
And she's like, "No, I don't want
to. I don't want anything."
You know, "I don't want to waste
their time."
And I said, "Mum, we're going to get
an ambulance, because
..I've never seen you in this much
pain."
Can you lay on your back like that?
No!
No, no, no.
Was you better on your side earlier?
Oh!
This side, this side.
SHE SCREAMS
Yeah, I mean, I generally think that
if we hadn't turned up, or she
hadn't got someone
to call the police, I don't think
she'd be here today.
One of the injuries to my side here.
So, very deep bruises.
And quite distended here. You
see?
Yes. Oh, yes. You can see the ribs
there.
Yes.
He'd actually broken my back.
He broke the nodule on my back that
feeds my right leg nervous system.
I was in agony. Absolute agony.
Absolutely unbelievable.
SHE SCREAMS
Mum didn't want to press charges.
It took her nearly six hours, with
us
um, basically pleading for her to
do it.
SHE CRIES OU
Oh, it felt like an absolute
eternity.
What got her over the line is, we
said, you know,
"He's just going to keep doing it."
He turned up in court on the first
day,
and my friends were there, and saw
him.
He looked all happy with himself.
You know, a bit of a wink to my
friends, and a smile.
He had been charged with GBH,
and three counts of ABH for the
other incidents.
OK.
The Crown Prosecution basically said
he would be willing
to plead guilty to four counts of
ABH.
Wiping away the GBHs, because he
thought he wouldn't end up with
a prison term if he pleaded ABH.
So the Prosecution, she said,
"I've seen what he and the family
have said.
Their side of the things blaming
you, and you and your family
are going to have to go through a
very horrible ordeal
if you take this to trial".
She said, "My advice to you is to
accept it."
So, I reluctantly agreed to that.
When he did get sent to prison,
it felt like justice had been
served.
Should be longer. But I'm always
going to say that.
Where do you go from here?
You've gone through this ordeal. He
is out of prison.
It was just utterly shocking.
He was turning up all over the
place.
I had to document the
post-separation abuse
to try and get further, you know,
protection,
you know, from the stalking and
harassment.
And I've suffered over 100 incidents
so far.
He is making his presence very
clear.
He overtook me on the road only two
days ago.
It has become normal for us to lock
four or five doors every night
before we go to bed.
I've started to think, "What if I
see him in the car?"
I can't live my life in fear of,
"What if I see Mark?"
The violence perpetrated against
Kathryn is some of
the most horrific I've ever heard
about.
Back broken, nose broken, ribs
broken.
And what I am most shocked about was
how,
after every act of violence
perpetrated against her,
she had to consider whether or not
to report Mark or not.
And to me, this is exactly what
the cycle of abuse
does to survivors.
It puts you in a state of confusion,
always wanting the upside.
In terms of me, and you know, where
I am,
I've probably never been happier.
Someone who felt like I had to be
with a man for the best part
of all of my adult life, is now
finding herself and finding me.
I don't have anyone to control me,
and it's just soI feel so free.
My relationship with my mum is just
like it was before,
which is a really good feeling.
I can actually smile and laugh,
and we can do things together.
It's good to have my mum back.
To let Mark put that wedge between
us, I'm ashamed of that.
With your son as well. It was your
son in addition to your daughter.
Yes. Got my kids back, who never
gave up on me. They never gave up.
