[theme music]
[engines softly rumbling]
[woman] Yeah, I-- I know.
It's, it's probably gonna be fun.
I just don't know what it is.
[man] Oh, come on, it's exciting.
Right, yeah, and I'll be excited if that's,
you know, what happens.
- What do you mean? Why would
they-- - We jus-- we just don't kn--
- I'm just saying.
- Why would they invite us out here?
Would you stop-- would you stop it?
Oh, hey!
- I found a nickel.
- Mm. Nice.
Oh, my gosh, Teri?
What are you doing here?
- Hi. You too.
- Good to see you.
- We're going to the same place?
- [Teri] Yeah, I have a reservation at 8:00.
Did you see the prices?
It's $3000 a plate.
- Painfully aware.
- No, we're not aware.
$3000 each? You didn't tell me that.
[chuckling] I mean, what is it,
diamond-encrusted lobster?
We-- we can barely afford the wedding.
- Oh, then, how are you-- - Oh,
just the company will pay for us.
- Right?
- [Teri] Okay.
I mean, we cannot handle
a $6000 dinner.
[chuckles] There's more to it than that.
So-- so what's, uh-- [mouthing]
Uh, Colin thinks that we should
pay for it tonight, our own meals.
He thinks that it'll show
that we're executives
- and not just little employees.
- Colin, $6000.
Yeah, plus tip, which is
probably why you're getting
that knot in your chest right now.
The company is expanding.
About to be promoted,
maybe the heads of the new divisions.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you. We can handle it.
We can't handle a $6000 dinner.
It's about perception. It's worth it.
Hey, there's Raffi.
Raffi, look who I found!
God, did you guys do the 36-hour fast?
- [woman softly] Yeah.
- [Teri] And the colonic?
[Colin] Yeah, that was fun.
What kind of place makes you
sign a waiver to eat there?
This kind of place.
I'll see you inside, okay?
Where were you?
[soft clattering]
[calm instrumental music]
- [Vance] that's not an apple,
bu-- Look-- - [Ramina] Okay.
- [Vance] Hey, hey.
- [Colin] Hey.
- Hello.
- Hello.
- Hi. Oh!
- Hello. Yes. Of course.
- Good to see you. You look--
- Yes. [laughs]
Oh, they just walked us in, that was
- [Vance] Yeah?
- something, really something.
- Colin, Colin.
- Hey.
- Hi. So good to have you--
- It's so--
- So glad to hav--
- [man] We have two--
two [speaking in Japanese]
Oh! Oh, we have two cards.
- Which would you like to use?
- Oh, no, that's--
- it's our treat-- - Oh, I think
they're talking about the credit cards.
- Oh, no, seriously, we can pay, it's fine.
- No, we invited you.
- Oh, ye-- we'r-- our treat-- Oh, ab--
no, w-- - No, no. Seriously, we can pay.
- Oh, my God, no. it's not a regular restaurant.
- I insist,
we're doing good, and I wanna pay.
- I'm gonna pay.
- [speaking Japanese]
- Uh, well, alright, then. Mm-hmm.
- [Colin sighs]
- Uh, shall we sit?
- [Colin] Yeah!
- [Ramina] Carrie Anne, right there. Great.
- Okay.
- [Colin] And on one. Yeah.
- [grunts] Oh!
- Oh, my God!
- It's funny, I asked for a lower table.
[laughter]
Well, you see that's, uh, that's smart.
- What is?
- That they've got these Asian elements
even though nothing
about this place is Asian.
- Mm.
- Wh-- what do you mean?
Well, it just has a, you know,
gives it a sense of the other.
Well, their chef is Canadian, but I
guess he didn't think it was exotic enough.
So he added all these extra design.
Same with the waiters,
I guess, for the mystery.
Yeah, we-- we've thought
about that for the brand, too,
you know, for-- for the design,
for the website, you know,
some, um, elements
that are just a bit beyond.
You know, uh, weaving in an aura
of something that feels
slightly elevated somehow.
Oh, okay.
- Carrie Anne's not feeling it.
- No, I-- I get it.
It-- it's just, what we're trying--
our general operating principles
with all of the design has been t--
- for as much transparency as possible.
- [Vance] Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
So I'm not trying to do something,
and be something we're not.
No, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean,
that's exactly what we're saying.
- You can still do that.
- [Ramina] See, this is why we love you.
Did you know-- I probably
shouldn't be telling you this,
- but, um, your Instagram feed is so inspiring.
- [Vance] Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
The whole,
"Do what you love," you know,
"Only work for what
you're passionate about."
We actually show your stuff
to the national team
at our conferences, and we say,
"This is what you need to think like."
- [chuckles] And w-- we tell our team t-- oh
- Sure.
you know, "See, you've
gotta-- you gotta be like this girl."
[chuckles] "Gotta have
this mindset, you know?
Love your job, and it won't feel like work."
[Vance] You know, it's like
what you say, you know?
You-- if you do what you love,
you don't do it for the money.
You do it for the passion.
- [Carrie] Right.
- Yeah. Like, like I just said.
[soft cracking]
- [Carrie] Whoa.
- [Ramina laughs] Look at that. Wow.
[laughter]
She'd do it for free, but, uh,
you guys really should make her
the head of corporate morale boosting.
Oh, well, we'r-- we're not really
ready to make any changes.
- Ar-- are we supposed to eat this?
- Which maybe brings us
to the update on the expansion plans.
Oh. Ar-- are we talking
about that right now?
Well, it seems like we're on topic, so--
- Alright.
- So there are expansion plans?
Well, there are plans, they just don't--
[intense silence]
- Well, the plans for now are just to stay the course.
- Mm-hmm.
See, we had two strong years of growth,
- so the board just wants to allow the benefits
- [squelching]
- to be appreciated.
- The benefits?
- Like, the profits?
- Uh, you know, th-- the new systems, the morale,
- like, everything's at a
good level-- - [Ramina] Yeah.
You know, as a leader,
you know, sometimes, you have to
[deeply inhales] read the room
and sense when it's time
to tap the brakes a bit.
[eerie violin music]
- So are we-- - [Vance] The expansion
plans are still very much a priority.
- Mm-hmm.
- We're just not ready
- to trigger anything yet.
- Right.
Mm-hmm. Oh, look at that.
[Vance lightly chuckles]
[soft creaking]
[Ramina] Incredible.
[Vance] Tha-- that-- that's--
- that's wild.
- [Ramina] Exciting.
- Mm. Mm-hmm.
- Mm.
- [man speaking Japanese]
- And we can--
- Hai.
- [softly] Oh, finally.
[Carrie] The whole thing?
[crunching]
Well?
Oh, my God. [laughs]
- [Vance] Yeah?
- [Ramina] Oh, wow. Mm!
- [Vance] Right?
- [Ramina] Oh, my God.
[laughs] Oh, God!
Oh, my God!
That-- that is delicious.
You know, probably not in the next year,
but we will--
Hm.
[Carrie sighs]
So there are no expansion plans,
just stay in the jobs we have.
Yeah, yeah, for now.
Wow. Mm!
- That was really, really, really delicious.
- [chuckles]
The next-- next course.
- Yeah. So good.
- Yeah, I think that y-- you gotta go
- You gott-- - and finish
it so that we can get on
- to the next--
- [Ramina] Oh, gotta eat it.
[Vance] Hey, so look, I, I
know that this is disappointing.
And [stutters] you know, this is why
we wanted to take you out tonight.
You know, it's-- it's our treat.
- Thank you so much
- [Vance] Yeah.
- it's so generous.
- [Colin] No, we can pay.
- [softly] Colin.
- I told you we're fine.
[violin music continues]
So, uh, at our, um,
leadership conferences,
we do, uh, these exercises,
uh, where we practice
- connecting with each other by sharing a personal journey.
- [loud heartbeat]
It's about empathy.
[softly] Mm-hmm.
Well, last year for me,
- uh, was--
- [humming]
[humming continues]
[whooshing]
[sizzling]
[humming continues]
[sizzling]
[gentle violin music]
- Oh, wow. [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
- [Vance] Oh! It's, it's wonderful.
- [Ramina] Look at that.
Hey, I thought that
you two should know that, uh,
well, you know,
this is probably the first time
that we've taken people from our office,
uh, jobs, you know, your
- Youth.
- youth, uh, out
- [Ramina] Mm-hmm. It's-- it's special.
- side to eat. So it's--
- Yeah, it is.
- It's good.
- Thank you.
- [Ramina] Yes.
You know, I think sometimes,
we have to swallow
- unpleasant news with grace.
- Mm-hmm.
And even if that means not being
our authentic self for a moment, then--
It's, uh, still our authentic self
to push through disappointment,
you know, it's just a side of us
- that is still authentic.
- [Vance] Yeah-- it is. It, it is.
I mean, we all have to deal
with various sides of ourselves.
- Mm-hmm.
- Not everything goes our way.
That shows a-- a test of
character and it shows a true--
To show our best side, even
though it's a side of ourselves
that's not showing
everything that we're feeling.
- Yeah, well, it is a side, so it's real.
- Mm-hmm.
[speaking Japanese]
- "Doso." Well--
- Probably means, "to take."
- Mm. Oh, my God.
- Mm!
- [Ramina laughs] Oh, my God.
- [Vance] Okay, okay, okay.
- [Colin] Mm.
- [Ramina] What is that?
- What is it?
- Oh, mm.
[soft splashing]
It's got a little [clicks tongue]
- you know. Oh!
- [chuckles]
[speaking Japanese]
Vitamin for freshing.
Oh, okay. Uh flushing.
- Thank you.
- [speaking Japanese]
- Hmm.
- [Vance] Yeah, this is--
Oh, cheers.
- [soft clinking]
- To
- To youth.
- Yeah.
- [Carrie] Hey.
- Mm-hmm.
To you guys. Yeah.
- [grunting]
- Mm-hmm.
- Huh. Well.
- [Carrie] Hm.
[violin music continues]
I don't taste anything anymore.
- [Colin] Doesn't--
- It totally cleansed my palate.
It doesn't really taste like much.
- [Ramina] Wow.
- [Carrie] Hm.
- Hm. That is-- that is wild.
- Yeah.
[clears throat and coughs]
- [Carrie] Wow.
- [exhales sharply]
- [chuckles]
- You okay?
- [Carrie clears throat]
- What is happening to me?
- [coughs and clears throat] - [Vance]
Jesus Christ, I'm having a react--
- Uh--
- Are you okay? Are you okay?
Oh, yeah, no, I'm--
- It's just a strange little sensation.
- [Ramina] Oh, my God.
[clears throat] It's a little warm in here.
It's happening to me.
Maybe it's the tea, you know,
we just drank it, so
It's, like, in the throat, right?
Very prickly.
- Mine's totally--
- Yeah. Oh, my God.
It's, like, all over my face.
- [Ramina] I feel like I
have a rash-- - niacin,
- right? A niacin flush?
- [Ramina] Yeah.
- [Carrie] Yeah, I think it's ju-- - [groans]
Call the head waiter,
this isn't safe! [grunting]
- vitamin-- - It should
be fine, it should pass.
- [Ramina] It's so hot! Oh, God!
- When? [laughs]
- Oh, my God. God, it's coming through my arms!
- [Carrie] It's everywhere.
- Well, it's getting worse.
- [Colin] Uh, there's a safety sheet here.
- [Carrie] It's spreading.
- [Ramina grunts]
- [grunting]
- [Colin] It should be harmless!
- Oh, my God, my teeth are sweating!
- It's going down my arms,
- it's going down my arm!
- [grunts]
- How you doing, babe?
- [Vance] Oh, my God--
I don't know, I thi-- I think it's passing.
- It's down to my leg.
- [grunting]
[Vance] It's going to my arms, it's--
[grunting continues]
[Colin] Personalized napkins for us?
[Ramina shouts] Mine isn't passing!
[softly] What kind of place is this?
- [blade rings]
- [Ramina] Niacin. Niacin,
it's a-- it's a very important vitamin.
[Vance] Well, but--
wait, isn't it a mineral?
[Ramina] Uh, I think-- I
think that's the same thing,
- a vitamin and a mineral
- [Vance] Oh! No, absolutely, yeah.
- Uh, you said, so it's a vitamin?
- it's the same thing. Yeah.
[eerie violin music]
Wait, so, is-- is everybody good from--
- [laughs]
- We're alright?
- Yeah, think so.
- Yeah.
- To family.
- [Ramina] Mm.
Mm.
[soft clinking]
Mm.
- [sighs]
- Wow.
- Mm!
- Wow.
- That's good, really good.
- [Carrie] Thank you.
You know, we have a great year,
uh, ahead at the company.
There's a lot of press,
a lot of positive press,
- not just about the executive
team, but-- - You know, about t--
- about the whole team. You know
- Whole team.
- The whole team.
- the nuts and bolts of it.
- Mm-hmm.
- And we're the nuts?
- You're nuts.
- [softly chuckles]
- That's funny. Oh!
- [man speaking Japanese]
- Okay. Another adventure.
- Yeah. Well, wonder what this--
- [cross talk]
- Oh, God, yeah.
- Wow.
- [Carrie] Mm. There's another winner.
- [Vance] Thank you. [chuckles]
- Mm-hmm.
[Ramina] Come on. Wow.
- Oh, my--
- [Vance] Mm!
Mm, delicious! So many--
Yeah, well, one bite cost 800 bucks.
[chuckling]
Mm
When I first started
going to board meetings,
I had to take a lot of crap.
The old boys
didn't respect me. Thank you.
Thought that I was just there
because I was the wife
of the owner, who was--
is 35 years older than me.
I always had butterflies
entering the boardroom.
I had to fight for their respect. [sighs]
You know, I had to,
uh, dress a certain way.
I had to look put together
but not trying too hard,
I had to look attractive
to maintain any kind of power,
but I couldn't look too sexy or I would risk
a whole other kind of resentment.
I had to show grace
under constant passive attacks.
And I couldn't let anyone see
if anything got to me.
Vulnerability wasn't celebrated
like it seems to be now.
[eerie violin music continues]
I had my dignity.
- I had my pride.
- Yeah, pride.
[Ramina] And I think [exhales]
that, you know,
we don't always have, uh,
control over the things
that happen in our lives.
The only thing that we have
control over is our reaction to them.
And I think it might be
a better use of your energy if,
if you were grateful
for the things that you do have.
Even though the expansion plans
are on pause for right now,
you can control your reaction to them
and focus on the things
that are going your way.
[soft scratching]
- [Vance] Just-- okay.
- [speaking Japanese]
[soft crunching]
- [Vance] Mm.
- [soft splashing]
[Carrie] Ramina, we
really are appreciative,
and I-- I hope nothing I said came off--
Oh, good. Yeah.
[intense silence]
- [mumbles] - I'm just glad
to know that you're grateful.
- Look, we, we are totally appreciative
- [Carrie] Sure.
uh, you know, more than we can say.
- [Ramina] Yeah.
- [Vance] You know, and your passion,
you are just really, uh, the role model
for people doing
what they love and love--
- you know, f-- - Yeah, it's
just that Colin was selected
- for this position and, you know, has shown
- [Vance] Mm-hmm.
for the last two years
how valuable he is.
And others have been promoted
who have done half as much.
- Yeah, well, sometimes it's, uh
- [soft clattering]
it's good to keep the,
the good ones at the inner core.
- It's important to keep the core group stable.
- Yeah.
It's my fault. I should've just
been a little worse at my job.
- [sighs] Colin-- - [Vance] No, no,
no, no, no. Colin, honestly, it's just--
- [sighs] that's not it at all-- - Are you
aware of the principle that people rise
to the level of their incompetence?
We feel like it's our job to identify people
who are awesome at their job right now,
so they can continue
to be awesome in their job.
If we were to promote them,
then that would,
you know, introduce, uh,
some weakness to the team,
and then everybody would suffer.
- You are really good
at your job. Um-- - Yeah.
- You both are.
- Yeah, I mean, he beat out,
what, like, 1000 other applicants.
Oh, yeah, well, you know,
we narrowed it down about--
long list to a-- to a handful.
And Colin goes
above and beyond, I mean,
there're weekend plans
we have to cancel,
I mean, sometimes, I d--
I don't see him for weeks--
I'm sorry, did the table get shorter?
Hey, did-- is this table shorter?
Or is it the table or--
Does anyone else feel taller?
I-- uh,
is the room getting smaller?
[Ramina chuckling] Are we growing?
Anyway, uh,
what I was trying to say earlier
is that sometimes all of us have
to choke down some bitter pills.
[Carrie] But eventually,
you get rewarded for it.
Just a few hours of looking
amazing in the boardroom
and you get to be rich.
I don't think that sums up
my entire experience.
- I'm sor-- I'm really sorry.
- Uh, ser-- seriously,
uh, I think that we are getting taller.
This is crazy, do [laughs]
do you all see how tall I am?
Is this-- is this why
they put us in individual rooms?
I don't see how we could
literally be getting taller.
[Carrie] I just realized,
when you said that that stuff
used to happen in the old days--
but you're saying they still
treat you like that, right?
- It still happens now?
- I've earned respect, I have my own power now.
- I guess I just never thought-- - [Vance]
R-- Ramina, Ramina. Ar-- are you sensing this?
[eerie violin music]
- [Ramina] Vance?
- Ramina.
[Ramina] Yeah, come-- come here.
- Hm?
- [Ramina] Come on her-- come on over.
- [chuckles] It's okay. It's gonna be fine.
- Hm?
It's okay. It's gonna be fine.
[laughs] Ah!
Hi.
Hi.
Vance, you must, um, have
trouble when your family misses you,
when you go on all these trips
to Europe with Colin,
spur of the moment.
Yeah.
You know, my kids
always wanna come, but my
my wife never lets them.
Must be hard to be away
from your family.
[sniffs]
[whispering] It will get better.
It has to get better.
- [coughing]
- Oh, my--
Wha-- what is happening now?
- [coughing continues] -
[Carrie] I don't understand this.
Why are-- why are we--
why are we crying?
[sobbing]
[Carrie] I-- I don't even cry at sad movies.
[sobbing]
- [coughs]
- [Carrie] What is happening?
[all coughing]
[shouts]
[ominous violin music]
- [coughing]
- [vocalizing]
[thud]
[coughing and retching]
[thud]
- [retching]
- [thud]
[crying] Wha-- what is that?
[retching]
- [retching]
- [metallic clank]
- [Vance groans]
- [Carrie] What?
- Did that
- Huh.
just come from inside you?
Tha-- that big thing?
I [stutters] I don't know, I--
- I think-- I, um--
- [Ramina] Vance?
- Mm?
- [Carrie] Probably we should stop.
[Ramina] Are you okay?
- [panting]
- Yeah.
- Colin, thank you.
- [Carrie grunts]
I think we should stop.
- [Vance] Huh.
- [Colin clears throat]
- I feel better.
- Yeah, I do too.
- I feel much, much better.
- [Ramina deeply sighs]
Yeah. It's like a wave of bliss.
- [chuckles] Yeah.
- [door scrapes]
[Ramina] Mm. We were just crying.
How did we eat metal?
[eerie violin music]
Very good.
[whispering] We don't have to stay.
[whispering] We gotta
at least salvage something.
[splashing]
[speaking Japanese]
- [Ramina] Uh--
- [woman] Hai.
Only rises if you look away. Please.
- Don't look at the--
- [speaking Japanese]
- Hai.
- [Vance] What--
- Huh?
- [Carrie] Look away--
- Look away?
- [Ramina] Okay.
- Okay.
- Yeah.
- Oh, so--
- I guess let's try.
- [man speaking Japanese]
- [Carrie] Yes.
- Okay.
- Hey, no look.
- [Ramina chuckles] Okay.
- No look.
- [Vance] Okay. Sure. Um--
- Okay.
Oh, you're leaving us? Okay.
- Thank you.
- [Carrie] We'll just see--
[door scrapes]
Well, this is weird.
Yeah, how did we eat metal?
[Vance] Well, we can
eat almost anything.
- You know, there are people that eat motorcycles, boats.
- What?
[Vance] Cut it up into small
enough pieces, eat the whole thing.
I ate a whole box
of Nutter Butters once. Amazing.
There were consequences.
- [Carrie] Hm.
- Not to be discussed.
When I was a kid, I swallowed a nickel.
Why?
I-- I don't know.
M-- my parents were worried
about money a lot.
I guess it's just a lot for a five-year-old.
- So maybe to save it.
- Just one nickel?
Uh, I think there was
a penny in there too.
- That is an incredible story, you
should share-- - My father showed me
- these love letters that he had
- It--
that made my mom
fall in love with him.
He was an amazing writer.
And he kept them locked in this wall
behind his house in this secret drawer.
And when he died, he left me the key,
and I wore it around for a week before,
you know, I c-- I could
get it back to that drawer.
And [sharply exhales]
one day, I, I woke up, and--
you know, I-- I chewed
through the leather string
around my neck that held the key,
and apparently, I swallowed the key.
Did you recover the key?
[soft bubbling]
[Vance] Mm.
No.
Did you ever swallow anything, Colin?
- Just all of this.
- Colin?
Come on. Play along.
It's fine.
I guess, uh,
We're all just here to see
how much we can take.
[man speaking Japanese]
- Can we look? Can we look? Oh.
- [man speaking Japanese]
- Yeah. Oh.
- [Ramina gasps and laughs]
- [Ramina] Whoa, that is--
- Gigantic.
[speaking Japanese]
He says, "Put hand in,
find a ring, and pull."
- Inside this.
- In there?
- Hai.
- Isn't it hot?
- Is it edible?
- [woman] Good.
- Good.
- Is the ring edible, too?
- [woman] Please.
- Just--
[man speaking Japanese]
- So in?
- [man] Hai.
- [woman] Yes.
- [Carrie] So it's not food.
- We're j-- we're not--
- [speaking Japanese]
Alright. With our regular hand--
[Vance] I-- I'm gonna undo my-- alright.
- [Carrie] Oh, it's gross!
- [woman] Go, go, go!
- [Carrie] Mm-hmm.
- [Vance] Ah!
- [speaking Japanese]
- Oh, man!
- [woman] Find a ring?
- Oh.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- [Ramina] I've got somet--
- Yeah. Yeah, it's hard.
- Ah! [chuckles]
- [Ramina] Oh! We got a lot!
- [Colin grunts]
- [woman] Keep pulling!
- [Ramina] Why does it look like that?
- [grunting]
- I don't like this.
- [grunts]
- [loud squealing]
It's just part of the journey,
we have to keep going.
something in there pulling back.
Fight it. All you can do is fight it!
[Carrie] Why are we doing this?
Just because some chef demands it?
- [grunting]
- No, we're choosing to do it.
We always have a choice,
we can't complain about things
that we choose to participate in.
But you said you don't have a choice
when the board delayed the promotions.
- I-- you promised us.
- That's different. They voted,
- they also have a choice.
- [Colin] Oh, geez.
[Carrie] Oh, so which
is it? How much power
do you have in your own company?
Or, or-- I mean, is all that smiling
- and hairdressing and hairstyling for nothing?
- Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- hey, hey, come on.
- no idea what I've been through, you have no idea
- what I've been through!
- Look, we just want what's fair.
Okay? I've earned this position,
I've done everything required
- plus a million other things.
- Colin, you don't know the whole story.
Look, you guys have your family,
your job, your salary,
- you guys have everything.
- [squealing continues]
I earned this, it wasn't handed to me.
[deeply inhales] Go.
- You listen to me.
- [gurgling]
You were specifically hired
not to be promoted
- [loud heartbeat]
- ever.
[tense music]
[loud wailing]
[high-pitched growling]
[loud squealing]
- [grunting]
- [sharp ripping]
[panting]
[Vance] So we strangled that.
- [Ramina] We did? We really did.
- [Vance] Yeah.
[Ramina] Beautiful.
[eerie violin music]
[soft crunching]
[soft rattling]
[soft squishing]
Can you tell him
that we would like to stop
before someone gets food poisoning?
[speaking Japanese]
He says the courses you have eaten
already are a series of poison.
- [clears throat] - And now you
need to eat a series of antidotes.
[speaking Japanese]
That is the journey of the meal.
- Wh-- we've been poisoned?
- No! No, not like that.
- It's-- - We'd like to skip
to the end, you know?
Uh, what about the tea?
You know, maybe, we--
we'd like more of the crying
tea, we could have that.
- Crying tea is for end.
- M-- Yeah, but we'd like it now.
- [Carrie] Yeah.
- There's much to be purged.
We can purge.
- We can make the tea stronger.
- Yeah.
Crying tea very strong.
Come out too strong.
- Well, it-- if we make the tea stronger,
then we-- - [speaking Japanese]
- [Carrie grunts] - [Ramina]
Look, we'd like it now.
- Yeah.
- [Ramina] Can we just do it now?
Uh, sorry. So sorry.
You stay on course.
He says there's no shortcut
on this journey.
Stopping very dangerous.
- [Colin] Okay.
- [Carrie] Sure, right.
[Vance mumbles]
[Carrie clears throat]
- If we eat this--
- We don't have to.
He said we can't shortcut it.
Yeah, bu-- [stutters] but he also
said that the tea is the antidote,
so why don't we just make more of that?
Um, yeah, I'm okay with that.
There's plenty of the powder left.
Colin, are you okay?
[scoffs] Not really.
I'm sorry, man, let's just get through this.
[Ramina] Okay, we eat. [soft chuckles]
We, uh, absorb
the nutrients that we need.
It gets turned into energy.
We pass the rest.
So it is life. [sighs]
- Yeah. Um.
- [Ramina] Would you g--
get the tea?
Let's get the tea going.
It's right here.
[eerie violin music]
- [Vance] Alright.
- [Carrie] How much should I put in?
- Just all of it?
- [Vance] Yeah, you know, yeah, just--
- just dump it all in.
- [Ramina] Why not?
Okay. Mm-hmm.
Let's just go ahead and eat
the next course, right?
- [Carrie] Yeah.
- I mean, honestly, like,
everything so far
has been incredible, right?
So I say, why not?
- Alright, this looks very good.
- [Carrie] Okay.
[Ramina] Yeah. It looks good.
- Whoa.
- [Carrie] Oh!
- [Ramina] Wow!
- [Vance] They did it again.
- [Vance sighs]
- Wow.
Here's to a big purge.
[Ramina] Mm-hmm.
- [slurping]
- Mm.
- Mm.
- Mm.
Well [chuckles]
this has been
quite the culinary adventure.
I think we'll just have this
as a, a memory between us.
Yeah?
You guys really should hire Carrie Anne
for the national team, though.
I mean, brand identity, youth outreach,
public relations. Promote her.
Yeah, listen, she's, she's great at her job,
but she's already found her passion.
[loud thud]
Why can't we all just be happy
that we get to do what we love?
Why can't we just accept what we have?
[Carrie] Do you love your husband?
Hey, hey, hey, come on, now, that's--
I heard he's sick.
[deeply inhales and stutters] He hasn't--
he hasn't spoken in two years.
[gasping]
[Carrie] And you can't leave him.
[Vance gasps]
- And you
- [loud thud]
you can't be with her
unless she leaves her husband.
- [groans] - Shut up.
Shut up! Shut up. [coughs]
And you can't leave your husband
or you'll lose the company.
[moaning and retching]
[eerie violin music]
[gasping]
[Ramina and Vance
retching and panting]
Did you ever love him?
[gagging]
I've only ever loved one man.
[softly] I was 17.
He was 19.
He lived on the other side
of the train tracks.
He was coming to visit me one night.
[sobbing] He died while crossing them.
[groaning]
[vocalizing]
[coughing]
[ringing]
- Jesus!
- [coughing]
- [coughing]
- Ramina, what is that?
[panting]
- [Carrie coughs] - [whispering]
I think it's ten butterflies.
Oh, I'm not passionate about my job!
[coughing] I wanted to be an artist.
[coughs]
But that doesn't pay.
Instagram stuff is mostly me-- [coughing]
- [retching]
- [clinking]
- [retching]
- [clinking]
- [groaning] Oh, my God!
- [gasping]
- [moaning]
- Are you okay?
[Vance yelling]
- [groans]
- Oh, my God.
- [groaning]
- [Ramina] Oh, my God, I--
Uh, uh, I have to go to the bathroom.
- We made that tea too strong.
- [Ramina] I gotta go to the bathroom.
- [Vance] You think? So do I!
- I know.
[Ramina] It's coming!
Oh, my God. [coughs]
[groaning and moaning]
[Ramina] Oh, God! I think I'm g--
Oh, God, it's hap-- it's hap--
- [coughing]
- [Vance groaning]
- [Ramina] Oh, God.
- [yelling]
- [retching] - [Carrie] Oh,
God. Oh, God. Oh, God.
[groaning]
- [retching]
- [clinking]
[coughing and groaning]
- [gasps]
- [Carrie] Oh, God.
[panting]
[Vance muffled] Waiter! Waiter!
Colin. Colin!
We need to-- [gasping]
[mumbling]
- I was wrong.
- [moaning]
- They're not napkins.
- [Carrie panting]
- [Colin] It's a change of underwear.
- [moans]
- [Carrie groans]
- [gasps]
[moaning]
[melancholic violin music]
[sharp splashing]
[soft clinking]
[woman in American accent]
Did you find them all?
[in American accent]
All four, the layer looks solid.
What was that about,
"staying on the journey"?
- I had to keep it going.
- That was really good.
Hey, you get a callback for that pilot?
[sighs] Shoot, it's in New York.
[crickets chirping]
[engines rumbling]
[Colin] Here.
It was free.
[soft rustling]
[softly] Thank you.
[engines rumbling]
- [Colin scoffs]
- [rustling]
Take this.
- Ooh.
- [Ramina] Hey. [clears throat]
Oh, Ramina.
[clears throat] You two look better.
Are you alright? Where's Vance?
Um, he's, uh
I don't know. He's taking a break.
[deeply inhales] Listen, I, uh, I
wanted to talk to you about, um
- an idea that I had. Um--
- Oh.
- You know, I really heard what
you said ea-- - [Teri] Carrie Anne!
- Oh, Teri! Hi. Wow, Raffi.
- Hey!
[Teri] How are you? Right?
So what did you think?
- Uh--
- Different.
- But it was incredible, right?
- Mm.
I could've done with a little less purging.
Sorry, less what?
[crickets chirping]
- Oh, great.
- [horn honks]
Um-- oh, hey, look, that's our ride.
- Oh, right, okay.
- [Teri] Gosh.
- [Carrie] So see you Wednesday.
- [Teri] See you.
- And yourself.
- [Colin] Have a good night.
[Teri] You too.
- Nice to meet you. Great scarf.
- [Teri] Okay. Yeah.
Yeah, great-- great to meet you.
[sharply exhales] Listen, um [chuckles]
Carrie Anne, I, uh, I, I--
I really want you to reconsider, okay?
I mean, I thought about what
you said and I, I think you're right,
that you are ready to run
a youth branding division.
I think that's a great idea, and, you know,
I think you are r--
ready for a promotion, right?
I just-- I can-- I can't
lose both of you, I can't.
[chuckling] So, um, why don't
you just give me a couple of days
to put together an offer, and we'll--
we'll talk about this on Monday, okay?
Ramina, I think we're moving on.
[engines rumbling]
[sniffs]
[clears throat]
[chuckles]
Sweet bunnies.
[deeply inhales] Shit. [laughs and sniffs]
- Alright.
- [softly] Okay.
[wind blowing]
[clears throat] Now it's done.
- [sighs] Wow.
- [clears throat]
[softly] Okay.
So, um,
how much trouble am I in now
that we lost our jobs and $6000?
Are you kidding?
We know what we don't wanna do.
That's the best money we ever spent.
[inspirational violin music]
[Carrie sighs]
- [Colin] Is an Uber coming?
- [Carrie] Oh, no.
We can't afford Ubers anymore.
So we're walking. [clears throat]
- [Colin] Can you at least cough up a couple nickels?
- [Carrie laughs]
Did I really just do that?
- [sighs]
- [indistinct chatter]
[eerie string music]
[theme music]
[engines softly rumbling]
[woman] Yeah, I-- I know.
It's, it's probably gonna be fun.
I just don't know what it is.
[man] Oh, come on, it's exciting.
Right, yeah, and I'll be excited if that's,
you know, what happens.
- What do you mean? Why would
they-- - We jus-- we just don't kn--
- I'm just saying.
- Why would they invite us out here?
Would you stop-- would you stop it?
Oh, hey!
- I found a nickel.
- Mm. Nice.
Oh, my gosh, Teri?
What are you doing here?
- Hi. You too.
- Good to see you.
- We're going to the same place?
- [Teri] Yeah, I have a reservation at 8:00.
Did you see the prices?
It's $3000 a plate.
- Painfully aware.
- No, we're not aware.
$3000 each? You didn't tell me that.
[chuckling] I mean, what is it,
diamond-encrusted lobster?
We-- we can barely afford the wedding.
- Oh, then, how are you-- - Oh,
just the company will pay for us.
- Right?
- [Teri] Okay.
I mean, we cannot handle
a $6000 dinner.
[chuckles] There's more to it than that.
So-- so what's, uh-- [mouthing]
Uh, Colin thinks that we should
pay for it tonight, our own meals.
He thinks that it'll show
that we're executives
- and not just little employees.
- Colin, $6000.
Yeah, plus tip, which is
probably why you're getting
that knot in your chest right now.
The company is expanding.
About to be promoted,
maybe the heads of the new divisions.
- Congratulations.
- Thank you. We can handle it.
We can't handle a $6000 dinner.
It's about perception. It's worth it.
Hey, there's Raffi.
Raffi, look who I found!
God, did you guys do the 36-hour fast?
- [woman softly] Yeah.
- [Teri] And the colonic?
[Colin] Yeah, that was fun.
What kind of place makes you
sign a waiver to eat there?
This kind of place.
I'll see you inside, okay?
Where were you?
[soft clattering]
[calm instrumental music]
- [Vance] that's not an apple,
bu-- Look-- - [Ramina] Okay.
- [Vance] Hey, hey.
- [Colin] Hey.
- Hello.
- Hello.
- Hi. Oh!
- Hello. Yes. Of course.
- Good to see you. You look--
- Yes. [laughs]
Oh, they just walked us in, that was
- [Vance] Yeah?
- something, really something.
- Colin, Colin.
- Hey.
- Hi. So good to have you--
- It's so--
- So glad to hav--
- [man] We have two--
two [speaking in Japanese]
Oh! Oh, we have two cards.
- Which would you like to use?
- Oh, no, that's--
- it's our treat-- - Oh, I think
they're talking about the credit cards.
- Oh, no, seriously, we can pay, it's fine.
- No, we invited you.
- Oh, ye-- we'r-- our treat-- Oh, ab--
no, w-- - No, no. Seriously, we can pay.
- Oh, my God, no. it's not a regular restaurant.
- I insist,
we're doing good, and I wanna pay.
- I'm gonna pay.
- [speaking Japanese]
- Uh, well, alright, then. Mm-hmm.
- [Colin sighs]
- Uh, shall we sit?
- [Colin] Yeah!
- [Ramina] Carrie Anne, right there. Great.
- Okay.
- [Colin] And on one. Yeah.
- [grunts] Oh!
- Oh, my God!
- It's funny, I asked for a lower table.
[laughter]
Well, you see that's, uh, that's smart.
- What is?
- That they've got these Asian elements
even though nothing
about this place is Asian.
- Mm.
- Wh-- what do you mean?
Well, it just has a, you know,
gives it a sense of the other.
Well, their chef is Canadian, but I
guess he didn't think it was exotic enough.
So he added all these extra design.
Same with the waiters,
I guess, for the mystery.
Yeah, we-- we've thought
about that for the brand, too,
you know, for-- for the design,
for the website, you know,
some, um, elements
that are just a bit beyond.
You know, uh, weaving in an aura
of something that feels
slightly elevated somehow.
Oh, okay.
- Carrie Anne's not feeling it.
- No, I-- I get it.
It-- it's just, what we're trying--
our general operating principles
with all of the design has been t--
- for as much transparency as possible.
- [Vance] Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
So I'm not trying to do something,
and be something we're not.
No, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean,
that's exactly what we're saying.
- You can still do that.
- [Ramina] See, this is why we love you.
Did you know-- I probably
shouldn't be telling you this,
- but, um, your Instagram feed is so inspiring.
- [Vance] Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
The whole,
"Do what you love," you know,
"Only work for what
you're passionate about."
We actually show your stuff
to the national team
at our conferences, and we say,
"This is what you need to think like."
- [chuckles] And w-- we tell our team t-- oh
- Sure.
you know, "See, you've
gotta-- you gotta be like this girl."
[chuckles] "Gotta have
this mindset, you know?
Love your job, and it won't feel like work."
[Vance] You know, it's like
what you say, you know?
You-- if you do what you love,
you don't do it for the money.
You do it for the passion.
- [Carrie] Right.
- Yeah. Like, like I just said.
[soft cracking]
- [Carrie] Whoa.
- [Ramina laughs] Look at that. Wow.
[laughter]
She'd do it for free, but, uh,
you guys really should make her
the head of corporate morale boosting.
Oh, well, we'r-- we're not really
ready to make any changes.
- Ar-- are we supposed to eat this?
- Which maybe brings us
to the update on the expansion plans.
Oh. Ar-- are we talking
about that right now?
Well, it seems like we're on topic, so--
- Alright.
- So there are expansion plans?
Well, there are plans, they just don't--
[intense silence]
- Well, the plans for now are just to stay the course.
- Mm-hmm.
See, we had two strong years of growth,
- so the board just wants to allow the benefits
- [squelching]
- to be appreciated.
- The benefits?
- Like, the profits?
- Uh, you know, th-- the new systems, the morale,
- like, everything's at a
good level-- - [Ramina] Yeah.
You know, as a leader,
you know, sometimes, you have to
[deeply inhales] read the room
and sense when it's time
to tap the brakes a bit.
[eerie violin music]
- So are we-- - [Vance] The expansion
plans are still very much a priority.
- Mm-hmm.
- We're just not ready
- to trigger anything yet.
- Right.
Mm-hmm. Oh, look at that.
[Vance lightly chuckles]
[soft creaking]
[Ramina] Incredible.
[Vance] Tha-- that-- that's--
- that's wild.
- [Ramina] Exciting.
- Mm. Mm-hmm.
- Mm.
- [man speaking Japanese]
- And we can--
- Hai.
- [softly] Oh, finally.
[Carrie] The whole thing?
[crunching]
Well?
Oh, my God. [laughs]
- [Vance] Yeah?
- [Ramina] Oh, wow. Mm!
- [Vance] Right?
- [Ramina] Oh, my God.
[laughs] Oh, God!
Oh, my God!
That-- that is delicious.
You know, probably not in the next year,
but we will--
Hm.
[Carrie sighs]
So there are no expansion plans,
just stay in the jobs we have.
Yeah, yeah, for now.
Wow. Mm!
- That was really, really, really delicious.
- [chuckles]
The next-- next course.
- Yeah. So good.
- Yeah, I think that y-- you gotta go
- You gott-- - and finish
it so that we can get on
- to the next--
- [Ramina] Oh, gotta eat it.
[Vance] Hey, so look, I, I
know that this is disappointing.
And [stutters] you know, this is why
we wanted to take you out tonight.
You know, it's-- it's our treat.
- Thank you so much
- [Vance] Yeah.
- it's so generous.
- [Colin] No, we can pay.
- [softly] Colin.
- I told you we're fine.
[violin music continues]
So, uh, at our, um,
leadership conferences,
we do, uh, these exercises,
uh, where we practice
- connecting with each other by sharing a personal journey.
- [loud heartbeat]
It's about empathy.
[softly] Mm-hmm.
Well, last year for me,
- uh, was--
- [humming]
[humming continues]
[whooshing]
[sizzling]
[humming continues]
[sizzling]
[gentle violin music]
- Oh, wow. [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
- [Vance] Oh! It's, it's wonderful.
- [Ramina] Look at that.
Hey, I thought that
you two should know that, uh,
well, you know,
this is probably the first time
that we've taken people from our office,
uh, jobs, you know, your
- Youth.
- youth, uh, out
- [Ramina] Mm-hmm. It's-- it's special.
- side to eat. So it's--
- Yeah, it is.
- It's good.
- Thank you.
- [Ramina] Yes.
You know, I think sometimes,
we have to swallow
- unpleasant news with grace.
- Mm-hmm.
And even if that means not being
our authentic self for a moment, then--
It's, uh, still our authentic self
to push through disappointment,
you know, it's just a side of us
- that is still authentic.
- [Vance] Yeah-- it is. It, it is.
I mean, we all have to deal
with various sides of ourselves.
- Mm-hmm.
- Not everything goes our way.
That shows a-- a test of
character and it shows a true--
To show our best side, even
though it's a side of ourselves
that's not showing
everything that we're feeling.
- Yeah, well, it is a side, so it's real.
- Mm-hmm.
[speaking Japanese]
- "Doso." Well--
- Probably means, "to take."
- Mm. Oh, my God.
- Mm!
- [Ramina laughs] Oh, my God.
- [Vance] Okay, okay, okay.
- [Colin] Mm.
- [Ramina] What is that?
- What is it?
- Oh, mm.
[soft splashing]
It's got a little [clicks tongue]
- you know. Oh!
- [chuckles]
[speaking Japanese]
Vitamin for freshing.
Oh, okay. Uh flushing.
- Thank you.
- [speaking Japanese]
- Hmm.
- [Vance] Yeah, this is--
Oh, cheers.
- [soft clinking]
- To
- To youth.
- Yeah.
- [Carrie] Hey.
- Mm-hmm.
To you guys. Yeah.
- [grunting]
- Mm-hmm.
- Huh. Well.
- [Carrie] Hm.
[violin music continues]
I don't taste anything anymore.
- [Colin] Doesn't--
- It totally cleansed my palate.
It doesn't really taste like much.
- [Ramina] Wow.
- [Carrie] Hm.
- Hm. That is-- that is wild.
- Yeah.
[clears throat and coughs]
- [Carrie] Wow.
- [exhales sharply]
- [chuckles]
- You okay?
- [Carrie clears throat]
- What is happening to me?
- [coughs and clears throat] - [Vance]
Jesus Christ, I'm having a react--
- Uh--
- Are you okay? Are you okay?
Oh, yeah, no, I'm--
- It's just a strange little sensation.
- [Ramina] Oh, my God.
[clears throat] It's a little warm in here.
It's happening to me.
Maybe it's the tea, you know,
we just drank it, so
It's, like, in the throat, right?
Very prickly.
- Mine's totally--
- Yeah. Oh, my God.
It's, like, all over my face.
- [Ramina] I feel like I
have a rash-- - niacin,
- right? A niacin flush?
- [Ramina] Yeah.
- [Carrie] Yeah, I think it's ju-- - [groans]
Call the head waiter,
this isn't safe! [grunting]
- vitamin-- - It should
be fine, it should pass.
- [Ramina] It's so hot! Oh, God!
- When? [laughs]
- Oh, my God. God, it's coming through my arms!
- [Carrie] It's everywhere.
- Well, it's getting worse.
- [Colin] Uh, there's a safety sheet here.
- [Carrie] It's spreading.
- [Ramina grunts]
- [grunting]
- [Colin] It should be harmless!
- Oh, my God, my teeth are sweating!
- It's going down my arms,
- it's going down my arm!
- [grunts]
- How you doing, babe?
- [Vance] Oh, my God--
I don't know, I thi-- I think it's passing.
- It's down to my leg.
- [grunting]
[Vance] It's going to my arms, it's--
[grunting continues]
[Colin] Personalized napkins for us?
[Ramina shouts] Mine isn't passing!
[softly] What kind of place is this?
- [blade rings]
- [Ramina] Niacin. Niacin,
it's a-- it's a very important vitamin.
[Vance] Well, but--
wait, isn't it a mineral?
[Ramina] Uh, I think-- I
think that's the same thing,
- a vitamin and a mineral
- [Vance] Oh! No, absolutely, yeah.
- Uh, you said, so it's a vitamin?
- it's the same thing. Yeah.
[eerie violin music]
Wait, so, is-- is everybody good from--
- [laughs]
- We're alright?
- Yeah, think so.
- Yeah.
- To family.
- [Ramina] Mm.
Mm.
[soft clinking]
Mm.
- [sighs]
- Wow.
- Mm!
- Wow.
- That's good, really good.
- [Carrie] Thank you.
You know, we have a great year,
uh, ahead at the company.
There's a lot of press,
a lot of positive press,
- not just about the executive
team, but-- - You know, about t--
- about the whole team. You know
- Whole team.
- The whole team.
- the nuts and bolts of it.
- Mm-hmm.
- And we're the nuts?
- You're nuts.
- [softly chuckles]
- That's funny. Oh!
- [man speaking Japanese]
- Okay. Another adventure.
- Yeah. Well, wonder what this--
- [cross talk]
- Oh, God, yeah.
- Wow.
- [Carrie] Mm. There's another winner.
- [Vance] Thank you. [chuckles]
- Mm-hmm.
[Ramina] Come on. Wow.
- Oh, my--
- [Vance] Mm!
Mm, delicious! So many--
Yeah, well, one bite cost 800 bucks.
[chuckling]
Mm
When I first started
going to board meetings,
I had to take a lot of crap.
The old boys
didn't respect me. Thank you.
Thought that I was just there
because I was the wife
of the owner, who was--
is 35 years older than me.
I always had butterflies
entering the boardroom.
I had to fight for their respect. [sighs]
You know, I had to,
uh, dress a certain way.
I had to look put together
but not trying too hard,
I had to look attractive
to maintain any kind of power,
but I couldn't look too sexy or I would risk
a whole other kind of resentment.
I had to show grace
under constant passive attacks.
And I couldn't let anyone see
if anything got to me.
Vulnerability wasn't celebrated
like it seems to be now.
[eerie violin music continues]
I had my dignity.
- I had my pride.
- Yeah, pride.
[Ramina] And I think [exhales]
that, you know,
we don't always have, uh,
control over the things
that happen in our lives.
The only thing that we have
control over is our reaction to them.
And I think it might be
a better use of your energy if,
if you were grateful
for the things that you do have.
Even though the expansion plans
are on pause for right now,
you can control your reaction to them
and focus on the things
that are going your way.
[soft scratching]
- [Vance] Just-- okay.
- [speaking Japanese]
[soft crunching]
- [Vance] Mm.
- [soft splashing]
[Carrie] Ramina, we
really are appreciative,
and I-- I hope nothing I said came off--
Oh, good. Yeah.
[intense silence]
- [mumbles] - I'm just glad
to know that you're grateful.
- Look, we, we are totally appreciative
- [Carrie] Sure.
uh, you know, more than we can say.
- [Ramina] Yeah.
- [Vance] You know, and your passion,
you are just really, uh, the role model
for people doing
what they love and love--
- you know, f-- - Yeah, it's
just that Colin was selected
- for this position and, you know, has shown
- [Vance] Mm-hmm.
for the last two years
how valuable he is.
And others have been promoted
who have done half as much.
- Yeah, well, sometimes it's, uh
- [soft clattering]
it's good to keep the,
the good ones at the inner core.
- It's important to keep the core group stable.
- Yeah.
It's my fault. I should've just
been a little worse at my job.
- [sighs] Colin-- - [Vance] No, no,
no, no, no. Colin, honestly, it's just--
- [sighs] that's not it at all-- - Are you
aware of the principle that people rise
to the level of their incompetence?
We feel like it's our job to identify people
who are awesome at their job right now,
so they can continue
to be awesome in their job.
If we were to promote them,
then that would,
you know, introduce, uh,
some weakness to the team,
and then everybody would suffer.
- You are really good
at your job. Um-- - Yeah.
- You both are.
- Yeah, I mean, he beat out,
what, like, 1000 other applicants.
Oh, yeah, well, you know,
we narrowed it down about--
long list to a-- to a handful.
And Colin goes
above and beyond, I mean,
there're weekend plans
we have to cancel,
I mean, sometimes, I d--
I don't see him for weeks--
I'm sorry, did the table get shorter?
Hey, did-- is this table shorter?
Or is it the table or--
Does anyone else feel taller?
I-- uh,
is the room getting smaller?
[Ramina chuckling] Are we growing?
Anyway, uh,
what I was trying to say earlier
is that sometimes all of us have
to choke down some bitter pills.
[Carrie] But eventually,
you get rewarded for it.
Just a few hours of looking
amazing in the boardroom
and you get to be rich.
I don't think that sums up
my entire experience.
- I'm sor-- I'm really sorry.
- Uh, ser-- seriously,
uh, I think that we are getting taller.
This is crazy, do [laughs]
do you all see how tall I am?
Is this-- is this why
they put us in individual rooms?
I don't see how we could
literally be getting taller.
[Carrie] I just realized,
when you said that that stuff
used to happen in the old days--
but you're saying they still
treat you like that, right?
- It still happens now?
- I've earned respect, I have my own power now.
- I guess I just never thought-- - [Vance]
R-- Ramina, Ramina. Ar-- are you sensing this?
[eerie violin music]
- [Ramina] Vance?
- Ramina.
[Ramina] Yeah, come-- come here.
- Hm?
- [Ramina] Come on her-- come on over.
- [chuckles] It's okay. It's gonna be fine.
- Hm?
It's okay. It's gonna be fine.
[laughs] Ah!
Hi.
Hi.
Vance, you must, um, have
trouble when your family misses you,
when you go on all these trips
to Europe with Colin,
spur of the moment.
Yeah.
You know, my kids
always wanna come, but my
my wife never lets them.
Must be hard to be away
from your family.
[sniffs]
[whispering] It will get better.
It has to get better.
- [coughing]
- Oh, my--
Wha-- what is happening now?
- [coughing continues] -
[Carrie] I don't understand this.
Why are-- why are we--
why are we crying?
[sobbing]
[Carrie] I-- I don't even cry at sad movies.
[sobbing]
- [coughs]
- [Carrie] What is happening?
[all coughing]
[shouts]
[ominous violin music]
- [coughing]
- [vocalizing]
[thud]
[coughing and retching]
[thud]
- [retching]
- [thud]
[crying] Wha-- what is that?
[retching]
- [retching]
- [metallic clank]
- [Vance groans]
- [Carrie] What?
- Did that
- Huh.
just come from inside you?
Tha-- that big thing?
I [stutters] I don't know, I--
- I think-- I, um--
- [Ramina] Vance?
- Mm?
- [Carrie] Probably we should stop.
[Ramina] Are you okay?
- [panting]
- Yeah.
- Colin, thank you.
- [Carrie grunts]
I think we should stop.
- [Vance] Huh.
- [Colin clears throat]
- I feel better.
- Yeah, I do too.
- I feel much, much better.
- [Ramina deeply sighs]
Yeah. It's like a wave of bliss.
- [chuckles] Yeah.
- [door scrapes]
[Ramina] Mm. We were just crying.
How did we eat metal?
[eerie violin music]
Very good.
[whispering] We don't have to stay.
[whispering] We gotta
at least salvage something.
[splashing]
[speaking Japanese]
- [Ramina] Uh--
- [woman] Hai.
Only rises if you look away. Please.
- Don't look at the--
- [speaking Japanese]
- Hai.
- [Vance] What--
- Huh?
- [Carrie] Look away--
- Look away?
- [Ramina] Okay.
- Okay.
- Yeah.
- Oh, so--
- I guess let's try.
- [man speaking Japanese]
- [Carrie] Yes.
- Okay.
- Hey, no look.
- [Ramina chuckles] Okay.
- No look.
- [Vance] Okay. Sure. Um--
- Okay.
Oh, you're leaving us? Okay.
- Thank you.
- [Carrie] We'll just see--
[door scrapes]
Well, this is weird.
Yeah, how did we eat metal?
[Vance] Well, we can
eat almost anything.
- You know, there are people that eat motorcycles, boats.
- What?
[Vance] Cut it up into small
enough pieces, eat the whole thing.
I ate a whole box
of Nutter Butters once. Amazing.
There were consequences.
- [Carrie] Hm.
- Not to be discussed.
When I was a kid, I swallowed a nickel.
Why?
I-- I don't know.
M-- my parents were worried
about money a lot.
I guess it's just a lot for a five-year-old.
- So maybe to save it.
- Just one nickel?
Uh, I think there was
a penny in there too.
- That is an incredible story, you
should share-- - My father showed me
- these love letters that he had
- It--
that made my mom
fall in love with him.
He was an amazing writer.
And he kept them locked in this wall
behind his house in this secret drawer.
And when he died, he left me the key,
and I wore it around for a week before,
you know, I c-- I could
get it back to that drawer.
And [sharply exhales]
one day, I, I woke up, and--
you know, I-- I chewed
through the leather string
around my neck that held the key,
and apparently, I swallowed the key.
Did you recover the key?
[soft bubbling]
[Vance] Mm.
No.
Did you ever swallow anything, Colin?
- Just all of this.
- Colin?
Come on. Play along.
It's fine.
I guess, uh,
We're all just here to see
how much we can take.
[man speaking Japanese]
- Can we look? Can we look? Oh.
- [man speaking Japanese]
- Yeah. Oh.
- [Ramina gasps and laughs]
- [Ramina] Whoa, that is--
- Gigantic.
[speaking Japanese]
He says, "Put hand in,
find a ring, and pull."
- Inside this.
- In there?
- Hai.
- Isn't it hot?
- Is it edible?
- [woman] Good.
- Good.
- Is the ring edible, too?
- [woman] Please.
- Just--
[man speaking Japanese]
- So in?
- [man] Hai.
- [woman] Yes.
- [Carrie] So it's not food.
- We're j-- we're not--
- [speaking Japanese]
Alright. With our regular hand--
[Vance] I-- I'm gonna undo my-- alright.
- [Carrie] Oh, it's gross!
- [woman] Go, go, go!
- [Carrie] Mm-hmm.
- [Vance] Ah!
- [speaking Japanese]
- Oh, man!
- [woman] Find a ring?
- Oh.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- [Ramina] I've got somet--
- Yeah. Yeah, it's hard.
- Ah! [chuckles]
- [Ramina] Oh! We got a lot!
- [Colin grunts]
- [woman] Keep pulling!
- [Ramina] Why does it look like that?
- [grunting]
- I don't like this.
- [grunts]
- [loud squealing]
It's just part of the journey,
we have to keep going.
something in there pulling back.
Fight it. All you can do is fight it!
[Carrie] Why are we doing this?
Just because some chef demands it?
- [grunting]
- No, we're choosing to do it.
We always have a choice,
we can't complain about things
that we choose to participate in.
But you said you don't have a choice
when the board delayed the promotions.
- I-- you promised us.
- That's different. They voted,
- they also have a choice.
- [Colin] Oh, geez.
[Carrie] Oh, so which
is it? How much power
do you have in your own company?
Or, or-- I mean, is all that smiling
- and hairdressing and hairstyling for nothing?
- Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- hey, hey, come on.
- no idea what I've been through, you have no idea
- what I've been through!
- Look, we just want what's fair.
Okay? I've earned this position,
I've done everything required
- plus a million other things.
- Colin, you don't know the whole story.
Look, you guys have your family,
your job, your salary,
- you guys have everything.
- [squealing continues]
I earned this, it wasn't handed to me.
[deeply inhales] Go.
- You listen to me.
- [gurgling]
You were specifically hired
not to be promoted
- [loud heartbeat]
- ever.
[tense music]
[loud wailing]
[high-pitched growling]
[loud squealing]
- [grunting]
- [sharp ripping]
[panting]
[Vance] So we strangled that.
- [Ramina] We did? We really did.
- [Vance] Yeah.
[Ramina] Beautiful.
[eerie violin music]
[soft crunching]
[soft rattling]
[soft squishing]
Can you tell him
that we would like to stop
before someone gets food poisoning?
[speaking Japanese]
He says the courses you have eaten
already are a series of poison.
- [clears throat] - And now you
need to eat a series of antidotes.
[speaking Japanese]
That is the journey of the meal.
- Wh-- we've been poisoned?
- No! No, not like that.
- It's-- - We'd like to skip
to the end, you know?
Uh, what about the tea?
You know, maybe, we--
we'd like more of the crying
tea, we could have that.
- Crying tea is for end.
- M-- Yeah, but we'd like it now.
- [Carrie] Yeah.
- There's much to be purged.
We can purge.
- We can make the tea stronger.
- Yeah.
Crying tea very strong.
Come out too strong.
- Well, it-- if we make the tea stronger,
then we-- - [speaking Japanese]
- [Carrie grunts] - [Ramina]
Look, we'd like it now.
- Yeah.
- [Ramina] Can we just do it now?
Uh, sorry. So sorry.
You stay on course.
He says there's no shortcut
on this journey.
Stopping very dangerous.
- [Colin] Okay.
- [Carrie] Sure, right.
[Vance mumbles]
[Carrie clears throat]
- If we eat this--
- We don't have to.
He said we can't shortcut it.
Yeah, bu-- [stutters] but he also
said that the tea is the antidote,
so why don't we just make more of that?
Um, yeah, I'm okay with that.
There's plenty of the powder left.
Colin, are you okay?
[scoffs] Not really.
I'm sorry, man, let's just get through this.
[Ramina] Okay, we eat. [soft chuckles]
We, uh, absorb
the nutrients that we need.
It gets turned into energy.
We pass the rest.
So it is life. [sighs]
- Yeah. Um.
- [Ramina] Would you g--
get the tea?
Let's get the tea going.
It's right here.
[eerie violin music]
- [Vance] Alright.
- [Carrie] How much should I put in?
- Just all of it?
- [Vance] Yeah, you know, yeah, just--
- just dump it all in.
- [Ramina] Why not?
Okay. Mm-hmm.
Let's just go ahead and eat
the next course, right?
- [Carrie] Yeah.
- I mean, honestly, like,
everything so far
has been incredible, right?
So I say, why not?
- Alright, this looks very good.
- [Carrie] Okay.
[Ramina] Yeah. It looks good.
- Whoa.
- [Carrie] Oh!
- [Ramina] Wow!
- [Vance] They did it again.
- [Vance sighs]
- Wow.
Here's to a big purge.
[Ramina] Mm-hmm.
- [slurping]
- Mm.
- Mm.
- Mm.
Well [chuckles]
this has been
quite the culinary adventure.
I think we'll just have this
as a, a memory between us.
Yeah?
You guys really should hire Carrie Anne
for the national team, though.
I mean, brand identity, youth outreach,
public relations. Promote her.
Yeah, listen, she's, she's great at her job,
but she's already found her passion.
[loud thud]
Why can't we all just be happy
that we get to do what we love?
Why can't we just accept what we have?
[Carrie] Do you love your husband?
Hey, hey, hey, come on, now, that's--
I heard he's sick.
[deeply inhales and stutters] He hasn't--
he hasn't spoken in two years.
[gasping]
[Carrie] And you can't leave him.
[Vance gasps]
- And you
- [loud thud]
you can't be with her
unless she leaves her husband.
- [groans] - Shut up.
Shut up! Shut up. [coughs]
And you can't leave your husband
or you'll lose the company.
[moaning and retching]
[eerie violin music]
[gasping]
[Ramina and Vance
retching and panting]
Did you ever love him?
[gagging]
I've only ever loved one man.
[softly] I was 17.
He was 19.
He lived on the other side
of the train tracks.
He was coming to visit me one night.
[sobbing] He died while crossing them.
[groaning]
[vocalizing]
[coughing]
[ringing]
- Jesus!
- [coughing]
- [coughing]
- Ramina, what is that?
[panting]
- [Carrie coughs] - [whispering]
I think it's ten butterflies.
Oh, I'm not passionate about my job!
[coughing] I wanted to be an artist.
[coughs]
But that doesn't pay.
Instagram stuff is mostly me-- [coughing]
- [retching]
- [clinking]
- [retching]
- [clinking]
- [groaning] Oh, my God!
- [gasping]
- [moaning]
- Are you okay?
[Vance yelling]
- [groans]
- Oh, my God.
- [groaning]
- [Ramina] Oh, my God, I--
Uh, uh, I have to go to the bathroom.
- We made that tea too strong.
- [Ramina] I gotta go to the bathroom.
- [Vance] You think? So do I!
- I know.
[Ramina] It's coming!
Oh, my God. [coughs]
[groaning and moaning]
[Ramina] Oh, God! I think I'm g--
Oh, God, it's hap-- it's hap--
- [coughing]
- [Vance groaning]
- [Ramina] Oh, God.
- [yelling]
- [retching] - [Carrie] Oh,
God. Oh, God. Oh, God.
[groaning]
- [retching]
- [clinking]
[coughing and groaning]
- [gasps]
- [Carrie] Oh, God.
[panting]
[Vance muffled] Waiter! Waiter!
Colin. Colin!
We need to-- [gasping]
[mumbling]
- I was wrong.
- [moaning]
- They're not napkins.
- [Carrie panting]
- [Colin] It's a change of underwear.
- [moans]
- [Carrie groans]
- [gasps]
[moaning]
[melancholic violin music]
[sharp splashing]
[soft clinking]
[woman in American accent]
Did you find them all?
[in American accent]
All four, the layer looks solid.
What was that about,
"staying on the journey"?
- I had to keep it going.
- That was really good.
Hey, you get a callback for that pilot?
[sighs] Shoot, it's in New York.
[crickets chirping]
[engines rumbling]
[Colin] Here.
It was free.
[soft rustling]
[softly] Thank you.
[engines rumbling]
- [Colin scoffs]
- [rustling]
Take this.
- Ooh.
- [Ramina] Hey. [clears throat]
Oh, Ramina.
[clears throat] You two look better.
Are you alright? Where's Vance?
Um, he's, uh
I don't know. He's taking a break.
[deeply inhales] Listen, I, uh, I
wanted to talk to you about, um
- an idea that I had. Um--
- Oh.
- You know, I really heard what
you said ea-- - [Teri] Carrie Anne!
- Oh, Teri! Hi. Wow, Raffi.
- Hey!
[Teri] How are you? Right?
So what did you think?
- Uh--
- Different.
- But it was incredible, right?
- Mm.
I could've done with a little less purging.
Sorry, less what?
[crickets chirping]
- Oh, great.
- [horn honks]
Um-- oh, hey, look, that's our ride.
- Oh, right, okay.
- [Teri] Gosh.
- [Carrie] So see you Wednesday.
- [Teri] See you.
- And yourself.
- [Colin] Have a good night.
[Teri] You too.
- Nice to meet you. Great scarf.
- [Teri] Okay. Yeah.
Yeah, great-- great to meet you.
[sharply exhales] Listen, um [chuckles]
Carrie Anne, I, uh, I, I--
I really want you to reconsider, okay?
I mean, I thought about what
you said and I, I think you're right,
that you are ready to run
a youth branding division.
I think that's a great idea, and, you know,
I think you are r--
ready for a promotion, right?
I just-- I can-- I can't
lose both of you, I can't.
[chuckling] So, um, why don't
you just give me a couple of days
to put together an offer, and we'll--
we'll talk about this on Monday, okay?
Ramina, I think we're moving on.
[engines rumbling]
[sniffs]
[clears throat]
[chuckles]
Sweet bunnies.
[deeply inhales] Shit. [laughs and sniffs]
- Alright.
- [softly] Okay.
[wind blowing]
[clears throat] Now it's done.
- [sighs] Wow.
- [clears throat]
[softly] Okay.
So, um,
how much trouble am I in now
that we lost our jobs and $6000?
Are you kidding?
We know what we don't wanna do.
That's the best money we ever spent.
[inspirational violin music]
[Carrie sighs]
- [Colin] Is an Uber coming?
- [Carrie] Oh, no.
We can't afford Ubers anymore.
So we're walking. [clears throat]
- [Colin] Can you at least cough up a couple nickels?
- [Carrie laughs]
Did I really just do that?
- [sighs]
- [indistinct chatter]
[eerie string music]
