The Garden: Commune or Cult (2023) s01e04 Episode Script
A Tale of Two Tylers
[woman] Six or seven people
that reached out online
that wanna come help us
with this new land project.
Someone could come
and visit for 10 days.
And then, after 10 days,
they could propose
to stay longer.
[Tisheila] The primary reason
that I'm going to The Garden,
I am preparing
for society going down.
This is my eyelash bag.
I should probably
stay more minimal
for The Garden
because it's less upkeep.
Have you ever done anything,
like camping-wise or outdoors?
[Jessica] Not really.
She might be not ready
for this.
I don't know.
Way to make me feel like--
-Oh, I'm just asking. I mean--
-Yeah, whatever.
I need my wife.
I haven't be able
to get a hold of her.
I'm worried about him.
[Tyler M] It could be a cult.
Why do you wanna stay here
if you think they're a cult?
[Tyler M] I actually
have purpose here.
Like, I have things
that I wanna learn.
And hopefully,
they allow me to stay.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Tyler M] I've grown
attached to this project
and I'm just like,
it doesn't make any sense
for me to go
at this point in time.
Yeah. So, today, is the day
that I have been dreading
for literally 10 days now.
They're gonna vote
whether if I can stay or go.
This whole thing's
really hard,
just due to the fact
that I developed
a really good relationship
with everybody.
But now, I'm hearing
that people are talking
behind my back.
He's like, "I really want you
to stay."
But it's like,
"But we really needed him
to go after the 10 days."
There's only
a certain group of people
that have stuck around
for the long haul.
And that group
hasn't really grown.
It takes a long time
to get in the inner circle
with this group.
[CJ] The people who have
this very strong feeling
are the people who want this
to be, like,
a community
that they're a part of forever
and their friends
are a part of forever.
And, like, uh,
they're very concerned
about too many people
showing up
if it's like
not the right vibe.
And they're very concerned
about that.
And I think,
like, two years ago,
when we had all this, like,
these conspiracy theories
about the organization,
like we were getting, like,
hundreds or thousands
of death threats a day.
And nobody
wants to go back to that.
That's where this concern
is coming from,
that if it's too easy
for people to stay,
there is real genuine,
like, risk
of, like, physical danger
to all of us.
This process
is hard and uncomfortable.
The difference is,
like, does the conflict
lead to growth or does it lead
to, like, abuse?
[Tyler M]
I'll leave peacefully.
I'm not I'm not gonna rile,
-but
-Yeah.
I'm definitely gonna speak
my mind before I leave.
[birds chirping]
[horn wails]
About to walk in the tent
and basically get my judgment.
I'm fairly invested
with my time and my emotions
with this land.
And I'm possibly
getting torn away from that.
[woman] We're open
to anybody at any time.
[man 1] It's not a safe place.
[man 2] We're here creating
something new.
And we're gonna burn it.
[man 3] If I don't conform,
I am outcasted.
[woman 1] There's a reason
they're off the grid.
[woman 2] For the love
of all humanity.
[woman 3]
The Garden is a cult.
You are putting us
all in danger.
Stop filming.
[woman] We're going to tell
our true story.
[birds chirping]
[Julia] Let's go to topics,
and we can start
at visitor extension.
I know it is Tyler's
10th day here.
And I just wanted to, like,
pose the question to the group
of, like, ideas of how
we can invite Tyler
to keep participating
in this awesome thing
that we're doing.
Like, I've grown
this weird relationship
on this weird community
that I never thought
even existed.
If you feel like a pariah,
like I have most of my life,
like I I've had a
I've had a long hard road
when it comes to friends,
like in my childhood,
in my adulthood.
And I really like
and love you guys.
[shudders]
[laughter]
I can finally feel
like I can be myself
for the first time.
And that I greatly appreciate.
For most of my life,
I wanted people to like me.
I had a hard time getting that
from friends a lot.
So, that's I'm
that's a really sensitive
subject that I have learned
to try to not care so much
about what people think.
But people backchanneling
and talking [bleep]
really gets to me.
But I do have to
I have a thing
I would like to say.
Oh, [bleep].
In order for our relationship
to work out,
I need communication,
transparency, and compromise.
And, like, earlier, I heard
that there was something,
like, being passed around.
I was like, "What the [bleep]
is going on?"
Like, I heard, like,
Julia was going around,
like, talking with the group
and stuff
and I was like,
"[bleep], here we go."
For me,
what I really wanted to avoid
in this meeting
was a tense situation for you
where people were debating
something in front of you.
-And so, I was
-[Tyler M] Okay.
trying to, like,
gauge how everybody felt.
And so,
what ended up happening
was I found out
that most of the people
really loved you
and wanted you to stay.
-And so, I
-Yeah.
was able to kind of,
like, make sure
that that was how
everyone felt
so that we could come to you
in this circle
and tell you that.
Personally,
I want Tyler to stay.
I'm just trying to get
everyone on the same page.
Just for future ref,
like I prefer--
-You prefer up front. Okay.
-[Tyler M] Right up front.
-That's the transparency part.
-[Julia] Uh-huh.
Thanks for being direct
with me, Tyler, about that.
I appreciate it. Cool.
That's how I conduct
my relationships.
I was on your side
the whole time.
Yeah. Tyler's this awesome
Viking dude
that wants to help
the community really a lot.
Um
[Julia] So, proposal
to invite Tyler to stay.
What we practice mostly
is consensus by silence.
We propose something,
then there would be
a countdown
of maybe 10 seconds.
If no one says something
in that time,
then it's consented on.
-[man] Woo.
-Yay.
[Tree] Wow.
That's so great, Tyler.
-Here we go. We did it.
-Yes.
[Tree] It's amazing.
Finally, I'm able
to convince everyone
that Tyler should stay.
[Heather]
So, take a deep breath.
Now that I've been accepted
into community,
I don't have to raise my hand,
I don't have
anybody to hold my hand.
I can just go ahead
and start doing
what I think
that needs to be done.
[chanting]
When the council was,
like, "Well, let's vote
let's vote in,
you can stay in."
He's like, "Yes, yes, yes.
So happy."
And I'm sitting here thinking,
"Your wife
is sitting right there, bro.
Like, you're not excited
to go home with her?"
Okay. Tyler will lead
these people.
I see that.
But this is
what's gonna happen.
When you get home,
I guarantee you're gonna have
divorce papers
sitting on your desk
'cause that woman
ain't gonna do it.
[Tree] I know, Oak,
now you've been here
and I was wondering if we
could discuss how you feel,
like how do you want
to participate?
You know, dealing
with the strained back,
unfortunately,
I can't throw too many logs
over my shoulders
like I hoped I could do.
We could move
where your camp is, too,
if you want,
closer to the kitchen.
[all] Yeah.
Man, I like being close
to the [bleep] over here.
[laughter]
We can build you a new one.
[laughter]
[bleep], but yeah,
I wanna be here
the rest of my time
that I'm allowed to be here.
I would like to help out
a lot in the kitchen.
This old boy likes to cook
and eat, so, you know.
[woman] Yay.
[Ren speaking]
[Tyler M] Okay. I'm sorry.
Can I help?
[Ren speaking]
I'm sorry.
I do that a lot. I'm sorry.
Look, you're ruining it,
my seat that I step on.
[Tyler M] I'm just a mess.
I'm sorry.
[Heather] Coming here,
I'm starting to remember,
-like, who I am.
-Mmm-hmm.
I'm not just like my schedule
is a big thing for me.
Like, girl,
from 7:00 until, like,
eight o'clock at night,
I have my whole day, like,
planned out for me,
and it's exhausting.
[woman] It's nice kind
of for yourself, though.
That's why
she's my sugar mama.
-Get the [bleep] out of here.
-Yes.
So, I have good news.
After the 10-day
council meeting, my wife,
my best friend,
said she wants to stay.
And I'm really excited
about that.
But Heather has to go
through the exact same
visitation process
as everybody else.
So, the clock starts today
with day one.
[Heather] I can't go back
and feel the same.
-It's just like, "Ah."
-I think we live in a world
where we think
that more is less.
Like, the more we give,
the less we have.
But you have to get out
of that mindset.
[Tyler M] For us to be able
to go off grid,
I have been waiting
for that moment
my whole entire life,
but it only took
four days here
for her to be,
like, "Oh, my God.
This is so much better."
I think my idea
of how I want to be successful
and how I wanna be fulfilled
has changed a little bit
over the past two days.
You know, I don't even care
that my phone died.
It's been dead for two days.
It's kind of,
like, coming to terms
-with having to, like, let go.
-Yeah.
I'm starting to remember,
like, who I am,
not as a successful
moneymaking investigator,
but, like,
who I am as Heather.
Sure. It takes a bunch
of hippies in
the woods for you
to start believing
in what I've been saying
for the past four years.
But fine, you don't have to
listen to your husband,
but I don't care.
We're doing it.
[birds chirping]
-[man] Team badass.
-[woman] Team badass.
[trilling]
[woman] Woo-woo.
[Julia]
We're building a kitchen.
There's gonna be
a roof coming down here,
and then there's gonna be
another side
higher than this one
that overlaps
coming down on the other side.
So, it's like two roofs
kind of, like, this
so that the smoke,
when we have our fire
in the middle, the smoke
can come out of, like,
the gap between the two roofs,
but no rain gets in.
The project
was to build the trellises
for the tomatoes to climb
in this case,
and also the sugar snap peas.
They put these posts in,
and then we're gonna stretch
chicken wire around.
Uh, hey, uh Hey, Oak.
-Yo.
-[Tyler M] You wanna help me?
Sure.
[Tyler M] Tyler Covington,
from the moment
that he stepped
onto the property,
he has done very little work.
Take this side
and is it attaching
to right here?
-Yeah.
-All right. Cool.
But that's fine
'cause he's disabled.
And then,
also the other members
of the community told me
he didn't have to do anything,
but there was a lot of work
to be done.
Do you identify more
with the Danish Vikings
or the Norse Vikings?
Norse,
due to the fact that I
My whole Viking reenactment
is based on a Norse-Gael.
[Tyler C] Okay.
So, we need to bring these?
[woman] Yeah.
To fortify the Also--
Hi. How you feeling? You up
You up for helping
Help me bring
some of these smaller branches
-over by the tepee?
-[woman] If I don't feel good.
[Tyler C] I'm here to relax.
I'm here to get healthy
and revitalize and get
more clarity for myself.
So, do you want me
busting my ass?
Or am I here to relax?
Which the [bleep] is it?
You think
You think you can do that?
I've tried to get him
to help me out
to do some stuff,
but he starts
breathing really heavily
and he has to take a break.
He has to sit down.
Yeah, right over there.
Okay.
[Tisheila]
I know that he has a injury
and I'm empathetic to that,
but you need to figure out
where you can get in and help.
[Tyler C] Whew.
I have every intentions
of helping this community,
you know,
physically and doing whatever
they may do
that's conducive for me.
But, you know,
at the same time,
I needed adequate rest.
Whew.
This wind, it's taking
the breath out of me.
[chuckles]
Like, this is not
a place for someone
that has that bad
of health problems.
This is This is no joke,
like he has no business
being here.
[country music playing]
[Jessica]
I definitely like Julia.
She's been very nice.
Before here,
the only faces that I saw
were Tree and Julia,
so I definitely thought
that they were the leaders.
Like, in the council or, like,
in any group conversation,
I feel like people
kind of looked at Julia
if they want any clarity
on anything.
But she's very, like, low-key.
Hey, what are you doing
over here?
-No.
-Okay. It's pretty easy.
So, you're gonna hold
one hand here,
one here, line up,
so you're gonna just follow
that line
with this little zero.
I feel, like,
immediately inspired
to, like,
take Jessica under my wing.
I've been
Jessica maybe before,
you know, and so,
like, I kind of could see
how she might, like,
evolve in this process.
Okay.
Ready? [chuckles]
Extra pressure.
You got it.
[machine whirring]
-Woo!
-Yay!
-I did it.
-Hell, yeah. That was awesome.
-That wasn't too bad.
-[Julia] Like a Skilsaw.
-A Skilsaw.
-Badass.
Jessica is, like,
seeking a new experience.
Even though she's never camped
or done anything
like this before,
she is just kind of, like,
putting herself
in this environment
just to push herself
out of her comfort zone.
And so, I think
that's really admirable.
Are you typically, like,
one of the builders here?
Like, have you been building
for a while?
Yeah. I started
I always just,
like, would practice
and stuff at The Garden.
I used to build
a bunch of stuff
that would, like,
completely fall apart. Yeah.
It's good to see
a woman here
-[Julia] Yeah.
-like, doing it, you know?
Yeah. I used
to be really intimidated
when it was like eight guys
and I would be, like,
trying to help.
Well, like jumping in, yeah.
-My inspiration. [laughs]
-[Julia] Yeah.
[Jessica]
We just kind of, like,
naturally clicked a little bit
and I feel
like when I talk to her,
she gets more, like, girly.
Yeah. This seems like
it's probably
really new for you, right?
I never thought
I would even touch a drill.
[Julia] Oh, yeah.
Like, I have no reason to
back in LA.
-Right, right, right.
-My friends would be, like,
taking many photos
of me right now.
-[laughs]
-Before I was like, "Okay.
I'll probably be
in the kitchen." You know?
Right. Yeah.
I'll be with,
like, the kids or whatever,
but I'm with power tools now.
Yeah. On a job site, yeah.
It's like that.
-It's awesome.
-This is so exciting.
[Julia] Hell yeah.
Thank you
for showing me the ropes.
You got it.
[Jessica]
One of the little girls,
she was like, "Oh, you took
some of your nails off."
And I was like,
"No, they fell off."
So, I'm down
to seven of the 10.
They look kind of cool.
So, at this point,
I'm a big outsider here
and I'm definitely
being treated like that.
They're hospitable
the first 24 hours
I was here,
I'm thankful for that.
But after that, it's just
You guys don't really
practice what you preach.
[laughs]
[Tyler C] But I'm there
to test myself
physically and mentally.
I want the full experience.
I want to learn
all the trades
that other people
are gonna show me.
But I don't get it.
These
Some of these people's tactics
really rack my brain.
I don't know,
maybe it's just me
and my personality
'cause I'm not them.
I'm not a [bleep] hippie.
If you wanna be a hippie,
be a hippie. That's not me.
[Xans yodeling]
Hey, I just came down
to speak to Oak.
If y'all need a couple
more minutes, let me know.
Well, we're busy.
Mind if I interrupt?
First of all, thank you
for allowing me to be here.
I come because there's,
like, some people
are having issues
with you in some kind of way.
They're looking for mediation.
I don't know who I upset.
I just woke up and came
right down here today.
Okay.
Well, Tyler's really upset.
-[Tyler C] Tyler?
-[Xans] Yes.
[Tyler C] New to me.
It's up to you guys
to figure out why.
I've always said
I'm a nice guy
until you force me not to be.
Talk [bleep],
we're gonna exchange words
and hopefully,
it doesn't go beyond that.
-[Tyler C] What do you want?
-[Xans] I'd like for you,
Tyler,
to just talk about,
like, why you're upset,
where the feelings
are coming from,
and then just try and be nice.
All right. So, for the past
couple of nights,
like, everybody can hear
your phone conversations.
Like, every single person
that walks by.
Like, I've heard you
talk about Jag.
I've heard
you talk about everything.
And then,
I was just made aware
that you've been
talking [bleep] about my wife,
that she's so insecure
that she's gonna divorce me
for letting me
stay here, is that true?
I said something
along those lines.
But, I mean,
I'm not in your marriage.
-I don't know.
-No, you don't know.
But every time
you open your mouth,
there's an actual
consequence to that.
-What's that consequence?
-This right here.
[clears throat] I stand
behind everything I say.
You think my wife's insecure
that she thinks she That
-To the point where--
-I think you're insecure.
You think I'm insecure?
In what way?
[Tyler C] I mean,
I don't know, buddy.
I mean, you told everybody
you're insecure.
You told the whole commune.
Actually, I'm pretty confident
in the fact
that I actually have
something to contribute here.
-[Tyler C] Okay.
-And then, the fact
that I know
my wife understands
that I have something
to contribute here
-[Xans] Can I ask?
-we're pretty Hold on.
I think what it is,
is that your
You and your wife,
based on your loud
conversations,
that you guys
are very insecure that--
Oh, just shut No.
You gonna shut
your [bleep] mouth on that.
[Tyler M] No.
I'm not gonna shut my mouth.
No. No, no,
because that ain't
That ain't true.
-Just like
-Mmm-hmm.
you saying you're not,
so you can make your own
you can make
your own criticism,
-but that ain't true.
-I'm willing
But I want the smoke.
You think I care?
-Come down here. Talk to me.
-I am.
I mean,
deliver the smoke, buddy.
-This is what this is.
-[Tyler C] Okay.
Well, then what's your point?
I'm saying you're putting
You're projecting your own
relationship on somebody else.
No, sir, I'm not.
-Oh.
-No, I'm not. No, I'm not.
Ask anybody that's listening
to your [bleep] conversations
at night, bud.
I don't know
if all of your observations
need to be spoken aloud.
-Well, that's my opinion,
darling.
-[Xans] Okay.
-[Tyler C] I mean, you
-[Tyler M speaking]
Y'all are Y'all are
very outspoken too.
And also, my
You've been pissing
on her [bleep] bus wheels.
-Oh, I did the bus.
-[Tyler M] Which, like--
I pissed under the bus once
and I had no idea
First of all,
I had no idea
she was in there.
It was thundering
It was thundering
and it was It was
A heavy rain came.
Am I gonna piss in my tent?
No.
I didn't know
she was in there.
It's a [bleep] bus.
Anything else?
This was nothing like
I anticipated coming into,
and it's my opinion
that I am already outcasted
from the first couple days
that I'm here
that I'm not liked
because I'm not like you guys.
Because I'll be honest,
there's been several times
I've tried to start small talk
in the kitchen,
I get ignored
sitting right there
in front of somebody.
Turn the cheek.
That's happened to me
several times.
When I was talking with you
yesterday,
and you just shut me out.
I told you I was having
a bad mental health day
from the very beginning
of the conversation.
I understand that.
And I was trying to help you.
-[Xans] Okay.
-I was trying to talk
to you and help you.
This isn't about me.
This is about you and Tyler.
-Stop deflecting.
-Oh, so, what I'm just saying
about being shut up
by the community
when I try to talk to you,
I'm
-You're one of the examples.
-[Xans] Okay.
-That's fair.
-[Tyler C] So, now,
you're shutting me out again.
[Xans] Okay.
I think I made a boundary.
-I said I'm having a bad day.
-[Tyler C scoffs]
[Xans] You wanted
to continue talking.
-Okay. Okay.
-[Xans] I tried to, like,
-be a part
of the conversation.
-This is my point.
-[Xans] Okay.
-This is my point. Okay.
[Xans] All right.
Him saying that
no one's being nice to him
is complete [bleep].
Not only can he really not
do things physically
due to his disability,
he's also, like, rude.
You can't be both
and still be liked.
I'm gonna go work on the roof.
[dramatic music playing]
[Tyler C grunts]
Tyler heard my conversation,
but whatever. I don't care.
I mean, I have nothing
to hide from what I say.
It is what it is. But it's
just more confirmation.
It's like shoving a circle
in a square peg.
These people are saying
they're not a cult
and they don't have
leadership.
There's no hierarchy.
That's not the way it is.
But before my exit, I've got
one more person to talk to.
I've got some things
I wanna share with him.
[dramatic music playing]
Tree.
Tree.
Tree.
[Tree] Yo.
[tense music playing]
[Tyler C] Tree.
Tree here?
-Tree.
-[Tree] Yo.
-[Tyler C] Hey.
-[Tree] Hey.
[Tyler C] You come outside
for a second?
[Tree] Yeah. Do you wanna be
on my live stream?
[Tyler C] No.
No. No.
You know, the whole point
for me to come out here
was to learn how to survive
in the worst
circumstances possible.
It's doomsday,
it's the apocalypse,
there's a zombie attack.
But these people,
if this is what
I gotta rely on, I'm screwed.
Tree, I wanna come
talk to you.
I wanted to be friendly,
but direct.
Okay.
I'm leaving today.
I have been outcasted
this whole time
since the first day
I've got here.
And I felt that I have
been mistreated.
-I have tried to I--
-Well, you've been mistreated?
-Yeah. I mean, I have been
-How exactly?
I've been trying
to talk with people
down in the kitchen,
been ignored.
I tried to come up
and talk with people about,
"Hey, how's your day?
How's it going?"
When nobody asked me,
"How are you doing?
How's your How's your back?
Or how'd you sleep?"
But everyone's talking
to each other
-Mmm-hmm.
-but not to me.
It's been hard
to get along with people
for God knows
for whatever reason
'cause I'm not a part
of your cult.
What you've just said right
here is really dangerous.
You could get me murdered
for what you said.
You said some
very dangerous words
that I was and what this is.
I was looking at you
as a leader.
That's why I'm coming to you
telling you these things.
And so, don't do that. This--
So, do I got the wrong person?
Well,
you're putting me in a
You're trying to put me
in a position of leadership.
This is a community of people.
I just notice that people
look up to you more
than others.
-That's the way I've got it.
-Because I'm a good person.
I'm cool.
Like, people like me.
That's what This is
A lot of community
is about social
Sociability.
-Okay.
-I'm going around
and trying
-Yeah.
-to introduce myself
and nobody wants
to [bleep] talk to me.
-Yeah.
-So, why the [bleep]
do I wanna be here?
You can't just come in here
and expect everyone's gonna be
your best friend
-after three days.
-But I thought
that this community
was all about any walks
of life.
I mean, everyone's family.
And then, two days later,
I don't feel so welcome.
Well, I think a part of it
is also your own attitude too.
You came here
and you started to, like,
be rude and mean
to a lot of people.
So, I'm just giving
you scenarios.
I mean, now, I'm coming
to you with my feelings hurt,
and then you're saying
it's all in my [bleep] head.
-So, I'm--
-I'm coming to you now
and you're saying
it's all in my [bleep] head.
This guy called me
a cult leader.
-Good job, mate.
-All right.
[laughs]
Don't be such a [bleep] bully.
[laughs] Oh, yeah?
How did I bully you?
You know what? There's a
bigger bully than you.
Oh, yeah, the US government.
-Yeah.
-How did I bully you?
This is [bleep].
So stupid.
Like, of course,
he's gonna feel outcast.
He can't walk
for [bleep] sake.
I mean, you can't just expect
to be best friends
as soon as we you meet.
That's some weird
indoctrinating cult.
We're not some [bleep]
indoctrinating cult.
[Tyler C grunts]
Thank [bleep] God.
So, if I'm not in your clique,
that means you just have
to outcast me
when you're so inviting.
[scoffs]
Get the [bleep] out of here.
I ain't got time
for that [bleep].
And that's why I am
terminating my experience
a little early.
They're not as peace-loving
and inviting
as they say they are.
That's
It's a crock of [bleep].
Because if you're in a clique
and you have outsiders,
this is the way
we [bleep] do things.
If you don't like it,
then you're gonna be
treated differently.
That is why you are labeled
and stamped cult.
Yo-ho.
[Patrick] It's encouraged
in our community
to, like,
really extend a hand,
even if it's not appreciated
sometimes.
[Tyler C] Free at last.
[Patrick] There has been
different accusations
of inner circle kind of thing.
I think it comes
from like a lack of trust
and a fear of being
not part of, you know.
I had a dream.
And my dream was leaving
the [bleep] hole.
But Oak just kind
of sat around a lot.
We tried to do good for him.
But with Oak,
it's more of a social problem.
It's more of, like,
a spiritual problem.
It takes effort in order to
try to get along with others.
[acoustic music playing]
So, we're about to go
dumpster diving.
I just get so excited, guys.
I'm literally the cheesiest
person ever.
She's ready to go.
[mimics fanfare]
[laughs]
[trumpet playing]
[cheers and laughter]
[Magic]
All right, y'all, we're doing
the dumpster thing.
-Are you ready?
-Dumpster time!
Yes, we're ready.
You'll be amazed
at what you find.
I've been digging in the trash
for, like, six years now
and I'm still blown away.
It's just like, how can so
much end up in the trash?
I kind of find out
we're going dumpster diving,
which does not sound fun
to me at all.
You want it to be, like,
quick in and out
because if somebody
catches you in there,
like a store owner
might come out back
to throw something away
and they see you in there,
they're like,
"Hey, get out of my trash.
That's my trash."
Isn't it usually juicy down
at the bottom of the
-[woman] Sometimes.
-Oh, yeah.
[Tisheila] Okay.
So, I need to change my boots.
So, I need to put
on my rain boots because
I'm thinking leftovers
and mice and roaches
and just all kind
of nasty [bleep].
A big reason that people throw
stuff in the trash is, like,
one orange will be bad
or one potato or one pepper,
one apple and they just throw
the whole thing away.
50% of the food
in the US is going to waste.
20% from the farm,
20% from the supermarket,
and 10% in your fridge,
in your bin.
There is waste all around us.
We could be living
in more abundance,
but we just throw it all away.
-Are we doing this?
-[Magic] Let's do it.
Awesome. [cheers]
Okay.
All right. [chuckles]
[Jag] All aboard.
[instrumental music playing]
Bring us back some dinner.
We love you.
Love you, guys.
First, gotta go do
a dumpster run.
We got Magic here.
We got Moon. We got Jag there.
And then,
we got all these new people
going on their first
dumpster dive.
[instrumental music playing]
[Magic] Are we ready?
-[man] Let's get it.
-Yeah.
-[woman] Let's go.
-Yeah.
-Team dumpster.
-Two, three
[all] Team dumpster.
[instrumental music playing]
[woman] Chips.
[Magic] We got coffee.
-[woman 1] Ooh.
-[woman 2] Yay.
-Chips.
-And they're pork rinds.
Oh, wait.
It's crunchy still.
The raccoon used to live
in the woods.
It used to be able to forage
off the land just like us.
We used to be able to forage.
Now, we're in the cities
just like the raccoon is,
trying to scavenge
what we can
and living on dumpsters.
[laughs]
Come here, darlings.
[man] Oh, my God.
[Ricky] We're able to find
some good things
and some bad things.
But at the same time,
you have to taste it
to see if it's good or not.
So, it's like Russian
roulette.
First time for everything.
And this guy in a raccoon
costume is telling me
that he never got sick, so I
guess I have to trust him.
Ugh.
[woman] Nice bacon.
-[man] Here's the meat shop.
-[woman] Okay.
I'm seeing
the world's best bacon
or some type of
sign right here,
so I'm actually
pretty excited about this.
We'll just spread out.
[woman 1] We're looking
for a dumpster.
-[woman 2] What is that thing?
-I don't know.
[Tisheila]
They don't have dumpsters.
They just have garbage cans.
[woman] That looks like
buried like this, had like--
-Oh!
-Ooh, lie low.
-What is that?
-[woman] What?
[laughter]
-[woman] What?
-[Tisheila] What was that?
-Oh.
-Yeah, baby!
[Tyler H] Tisheila finds
a severed deer head.
For me, I'm thinking
we can use that.
[woman 1] It was such
a typical reaction.
-[woman 2] Yeah.
-Keep it over there.
I don't play with those.
[laughter]
We can use the antlers
for many different things,
mainly decorating.
I mean,
it was a pretty cool find,
but it wasn't bacon.
Oh, Sheila and Jessica,
are you guys ready
for the next one?
-I'm over that.
-[Tyler M] You two getting in.
-You guys wanna try it?
-We're getting in?
[Tyler M] Yeah.
-[woman 1]
Now, we're right here.
-[woman 2] Perfect.
[Magic] Well, I mean,
the bus is parked.
I don't know
if we can open them.
-[Jessica] I'm really nervous.
-[Tisheila] Our turn, girl.
-You ready?
-[Tisheila] You got it.
I'm putting my hair
up for this.
[woman] Let me use that.
[Tisheila] Oh, my word.
Oh, that's all you guys
right there.
I can't believe
I'm doing this.
[Tyler M] Move in.
-Oh, my God. Was that a roach?
-No, that wasn't.
No way What
No, no, no, no.
There's no There's no
roach. There's no roach.
I know it sounds gross
eating a dumpster grape
or eating a glazed doughnut
out of a soggy box.
But you can just make wine
with those dumpster grapes.
-Oh.
-Are you all right?
[Tisheila laughs]
[Jessica] Okay. Okay.
[woman]
You guys are doing great.
-Yeah, but the--
-Oh [bleep] He might actually
be in there.
-Don't [bleep] say that.
-No. Right there.
[Jessica]
It was kind of thrilling
in a way, like we're just
kind of, like, raccoons,
like stealing
from the dumpster.
-[laughter]
-[woman] [bleep]
That was not nice.
Yeah, good job, guys.
Never thought I'd be saying
that phrase in my life,
but here I am.
[tense music playing]
[Tree] Every time
that Tisheila and Ricky
and Jessica walk by a bin now,
they're gonna think
what's in there?
Is there something in there?
That's powerful.
Catch.
[laughter]
Sorry.
[Jessica] Dumpster diving
made me realize
just how much waste there is
and how much stores just
throw away left and right
for no reason at all.
And it's truly like one man's
trash,
another man's treasure.
[Tyler M] These people
are actually very good
at dumpster diving, farming.
What they really lack in
is bushcraft skills, survival.
And that is an area that
I can really help them out in
because that is where
I really thrive.
[instrumental music playing]
[Jessica] Self-care here
is a completely
different ballgame.
It's about embracing
like your natural self.
But I don't know.
When I start to smell myself,
that's a red flag.
I see there's some
community soap.
I brought my own.
Yeah, it's not too bad
I guess. [chuckles]
Oh.
Okay.
It's cold.
Okay.
All my eyelashes
are off completely.
I have seven nails on,
so I'm kind of roughing it
right now.
Oh, my gosh.
I guess this is like
a good time to check
for ticks at least.
Time for the face.
Oh, my Lord.
[Tyler M] So
have you ever done
anything like this before?
[Tree] Hunted? No.
And I've never even
set out a trap.
I've been wanting
to learn for so long.
[Tyler M] Well,
you're gonna learn today.
It was consented on
that I couldn't hunt
on the property. But now,
now that I've been
accepted in the community,
I'm no longer scared
that I'm gonna get kicked out.
This is a really good spot
right here.
Because guess what?
I am an equal now.
If I got to bump heads,
in order to get [bleep] on,
so be it.
-All right.
-I'm so much smaller
than you now.
-[laughs]
-Sure.
[laughs]
[Tyler M]
I wasn't born a leader.
I was very timid growing up.
I was a little [bleep] head.
The military is what drove me
to become who you see
sitting before you.
-Now, look at this.
-Whoa!
Okay, okay. That's fast.
[Tyler M]
Places like The Garden,
they say they don't have
a leader.
And I can see
how that's beneficial,
but if the [bleep]
actually hits the fan,
someone's gonna need
to take charge.
And this is gonna be tied
to the tree,
and then the other end
is gonna be the snare.
So, when the animal gets
caught into it,
it tries to take off running,
triggering the other end
to the tree
springing up into the air.
And then [makes sound]
How did you get into all this?
Being a survivalist
and being a prepper.
[Tree] So, what are you
prepping for?
[Tyler M] I am just prepping
for when the United States
economy collapses.
That's an actual real thing.
This whole process of this
whole land and everything
has been a wet dream to me.
As a prepper, like this
is exactly what I imagined.
Taking a raw piece of land,
and then turning it
into something sustainable,
something out of a
out of a book.
What about you? Is this kind
of what you envisioned?
It's just not necessarily
everything that I want.
Now, I'm not trying to create
spaces in case the world ends.
I'm creating spaces
so that people can change
their lifestyle
so the world doesn't end.
Describe to me, like,
your absolute perfect
utopian vision
of a land like this.
I would want a situation
where, you know,
we're growing our own food.
We're hosting these parties
every week for the world
to be able to come to.
[Tyler M]
So true self-sustaining.
[Tree] Self-sustaining,
-off-grid, you know, party.
-Community.
If we're gonna make living
off the land an option,
we have to be able
to beat capitalism.
And capitalism is so good.
You're able to have access
to anything you want
at any moment at a time,
24/7 a week.
There is something happening
in every single city.
It's a hard thing to travel
for some people
because they are so attached
to the material world
and the safety
that that brings them
because we have to fill
our needs with material goods.
The Our semen that creates
life, that is our material.
Like, not your [bleep] iPhone,
not your car,
not your [bleep] home.
I know Patrick has a lot of,
like, influence,
but does he have the same type
of way of thinking?
[Tree] No. God, no.
Because it's
What you're talking about
is a little different than
what's happening right here.
And I have somewhat
of a different vision.
This, all of it is great.
Except for me,
I think a lot of people here
right now wouldn't necessarily
like my version of it
because my version
of community is more
my wife and I are in charge.
If you want a better
life instead of living
on the street,
you got to listen
to what we say
because this 100% consensus,
like it
It's It can be
aggravating sometimes.
Like, I wanna go hunting,
and then all it takes
is one person
to be like, "Sorry,
you have to do not that."
Yeah.
Living off grid is definitely
not for the faint of heart.
I think I have a really good
handle on things
and how to lead
and how to influence people
to do things correctly
the first time.
Having this kumbaya crap,
it's ineffective,
and there's a lot of people
in this community also think
that the way they do things
is ineffective.
It would be a
It would be a lot different.
Look Okay.
But I want to let you know
what you just said
is really dangerous
and that you could actually
put a lot of people's lives
in danger.
You just said a community
where you and your wife
-are the leaders.
-[Tyler M] Yeah.
-That's a cult.
-Yeah.
[tense music playing]
[Tyler M] Heather's bisexual.
If you wanted to experiment,
we're open.
Is this my initiation?
[Tisheila speaking]
But it'll definitely make
someone back up off you.
Today is my 10th day.
I really would like
to stay here.
So, we're gonna throw
a sexy party.
-[cheers]
-[woman] Yeah, let's go do it.
[Patrick]
But that's not sustainable,
you can't have
a perpetual party.
[Tree] Me and Patrick,
we've just been having
our issues.
[woman]
Get out, get out, get out!
-[sobs]
-[Tree] Stop filming.
-[man] Tree.
-You have put in us
all in danger.
Stop filming.
[woman] I really don't see
how they think
getting me off the land
is going to end my journey.
that reached out online
that wanna come help us
with this new land project.
Someone could come
and visit for 10 days.
And then, after 10 days,
they could propose
to stay longer.
[Tisheila] The primary reason
that I'm going to The Garden,
I am preparing
for society going down.
This is my eyelash bag.
I should probably
stay more minimal
for The Garden
because it's less upkeep.
Have you ever done anything,
like camping-wise or outdoors?
[Jessica] Not really.
She might be not ready
for this.
I don't know.
Way to make me feel like--
-Oh, I'm just asking. I mean--
-Yeah, whatever.
I need my wife.
I haven't be able
to get a hold of her.
I'm worried about him.
[Tyler M] It could be a cult.
Why do you wanna stay here
if you think they're a cult?
[Tyler M] I actually
have purpose here.
Like, I have things
that I wanna learn.
And hopefully,
they allow me to stay.
[suspenseful music playing]
[Tyler M] I've grown
attached to this project
and I'm just like,
it doesn't make any sense
for me to go
at this point in time.
Yeah. So, today, is the day
that I have been dreading
for literally 10 days now.
They're gonna vote
whether if I can stay or go.
This whole thing's
really hard,
just due to the fact
that I developed
a really good relationship
with everybody.
But now, I'm hearing
that people are talking
behind my back.
He's like, "I really want you
to stay."
But it's like,
"But we really needed him
to go after the 10 days."
There's only
a certain group of people
that have stuck around
for the long haul.
And that group
hasn't really grown.
It takes a long time
to get in the inner circle
with this group.
[CJ] The people who have
this very strong feeling
are the people who want this
to be, like,
a community
that they're a part of forever
and their friends
are a part of forever.
And, like, uh,
they're very concerned
about too many people
showing up
if it's like
not the right vibe.
And they're very concerned
about that.
And I think,
like, two years ago,
when we had all this, like,
these conspiracy theories
about the organization,
like we were getting, like,
hundreds or thousands
of death threats a day.
And nobody
wants to go back to that.
That's where this concern
is coming from,
that if it's too easy
for people to stay,
there is real genuine,
like, risk
of, like, physical danger
to all of us.
This process
is hard and uncomfortable.
The difference is,
like, does the conflict
lead to growth or does it lead
to, like, abuse?
[Tyler M]
I'll leave peacefully.
I'm not I'm not gonna rile,
-but
-Yeah.
I'm definitely gonna speak
my mind before I leave.
[birds chirping]
[horn wails]
About to walk in the tent
and basically get my judgment.
I'm fairly invested
with my time and my emotions
with this land.
And I'm possibly
getting torn away from that.
[woman] We're open
to anybody at any time.
[man 1] It's not a safe place.
[man 2] We're here creating
something new.
And we're gonna burn it.
[man 3] If I don't conform,
I am outcasted.
[woman 1] There's a reason
they're off the grid.
[woman 2] For the love
of all humanity.
[woman 3]
The Garden is a cult.
You are putting us
all in danger.
Stop filming.
[woman] We're going to tell
our true story.
[birds chirping]
[Julia] Let's go to topics,
and we can start
at visitor extension.
I know it is Tyler's
10th day here.
And I just wanted to, like,
pose the question to the group
of, like, ideas of how
we can invite Tyler
to keep participating
in this awesome thing
that we're doing.
Like, I've grown
this weird relationship
on this weird community
that I never thought
even existed.
If you feel like a pariah,
like I have most of my life,
like I I've had a
I've had a long hard road
when it comes to friends,
like in my childhood,
in my adulthood.
And I really like
and love you guys.
[shudders]
[laughter]
I can finally feel
like I can be myself
for the first time.
And that I greatly appreciate.
For most of my life,
I wanted people to like me.
I had a hard time getting that
from friends a lot.
So, that's I'm
that's a really sensitive
subject that I have learned
to try to not care so much
about what people think.
But people backchanneling
and talking [bleep]
really gets to me.
But I do have to
I have a thing
I would like to say.
Oh, [bleep].
In order for our relationship
to work out,
I need communication,
transparency, and compromise.
And, like, earlier, I heard
that there was something,
like, being passed around.
I was like, "What the [bleep]
is going on?"
Like, I heard, like,
Julia was going around,
like, talking with the group
and stuff
and I was like,
"[bleep], here we go."
For me,
what I really wanted to avoid
in this meeting
was a tense situation for you
where people were debating
something in front of you.
-And so, I was
-[Tyler M] Okay.
trying to, like,
gauge how everybody felt.
And so,
what ended up happening
was I found out
that most of the people
really loved you
and wanted you to stay.
-And so, I
-Yeah.
was able to kind of,
like, make sure
that that was how
everyone felt
so that we could come to you
in this circle
and tell you that.
Personally,
I want Tyler to stay.
I'm just trying to get
everyone on the same page.
Just for future ref,
like I prefer--
-You prefer up front. Okay.
-[Tyler M] Right up front.
-That's the transparency part.
-[Julia] Uh-huh.
Thanks for being direct
with me, Tyler, about that.
I appreciate it. Cool.
That's how I conduct
my relationships.
I was on your side
the whole time.
Yeah. Tyler's this awesome
Viking dude
that wants to help
the community really a lot.
Um
[Julia] So, proposal
to invite Tyler to stay.
What we practice mostly
is consensus by silence.
We propose something,
then there would be
a countdown
of maybe 10 seconds.
If no one says something
in that time,
then it's consented on.
-[man] Woo.
-Yay.
[Tree] Wow.
That's so great, Tyler.
-Here we go. We did it.
-Yes.
[Tree] It's amazing.
Finally, I'm able
to convince everyone
that Tyler should stay.
[Heather]
So, take a deep breath.
Now that I've been accepted
into community,
I don't have to raise my hand,
I don't have
anybody to hold my hand.
I can just go ahead
and start doing
what I think
that needs to be done.
[chanting]
When the council was,
like, "Well, let's vote
let's vote in,
you can stay in."
He's like, "Yes, yes, yes.
So happy."
And I'm sitting here thinking,
"Your wife
is sitting right there, bro.
Like, you're not excited
to go home with her?"
Okay. Tyler will lead
these people.
I see that.
But this is
what's gonna happen.
When you get home,
I guarantee you're gonna have
divorce papers
sitting on your desk
'cause that woman
ain't gonna do it.
[Tree] I know, Oak,
now you've been here
and I was wondering if we
could discuss how you feel,
like how do you want
to participate?
You know, dealing
with the strained back,
unfortunately,
I can't throw too many logs
over my shoulders
like I hoped I could do.
We could move
where your camp is, too,
if you want,
closer to the kitchen.
[all] Yeah.
Man, I like being close
to the [bleep] over here.
[laughter]
We can build you a new one.
[laughter]
[bleep], but yeah,
I wanna be here
the rest of my time
that I'm allowed to be here.
I would like to help out
a lot in the kitchen.
This old boy likes to cook
and eat, so, you know.
[woman] Yay.
[Ren speaking]
[Tyler M] Okay. I'm sorry.
Can I help?
[Ren speaking]
I'm sorry.
I do that a lot. I'm sorry.
Look, you're ruining it,
my seat that I step on.
[Tyler M] I'm just a mess.
I'm sorry.
[Heather] Coming here,
I'm starting to remember,
-like, who I am.
-Mmm-hmm.
I'm not just like my schedule
is a big thing for me.
Like, girl,
from 7:00 until, like,
eight o'clock at night,
I have my whole day, like,
planned out for me,
and it's exhausting.
[woman] It's nice kind
of for yourself, though.
That's why
she's my sugar mama.
-Get the [bleep] out of here.
-Yes.
So, I have good news.
After the 10-day
council meeting, my wife,
my best friend,
said she wants to stay.
And I'm really excited
about that.
But Heather has to go
through the exact same
visitation process
as everybody else.
So, the clock starts today
with day one.
[Heather] I can't go back
and feel the same.
-It's just like, "Ah."
-I think we live in a world
where we think
that more is less.
Like, the more we give,
the less we have.
But you have to get out
of that mindset.
[Tyler M] For us to be able
to go off grid,
I have been waiting
for that moment
my whole entire life,
but it only took
four days here
for her to be,
like, "Oh, my God.
This is so much better."
I think my idea
of how I want to be successful
and how I wanna be fulfilled
has changed a little bit
over the past two days.
You know, I don't even care
that my phone died.
It's been dead for two days.
It's kind of,
like, coming to terms
-with having to, like, let go.
-Yeah.
I'm starting to remember,
like, who I am,
not as a successful
moneymaking investigator,
but, like,
who I am as Heather.
Sure. It takes a bunch
of hippies in
the woods for you
to start believing
in what I've been saying
for the past four years.
But fine, you don't have to
listen to your husband,
but I don't care.
We're doing it.
[birds chirping]
-[man] Team badass.
-[woman] Team badass.
[trilling]
[woman] Woo-woo.
[Julia]
We're building a kitchen.
There's gonna be
a roof coming down here,
and then there's gonna be
another side
higher than this one
that overlaps
coming down on the other side.
So, it's like two roofs
kind of, like, this
so that the smoke,
when we have our fire
in the middle, the smoke
can come out of, like,
the gap between the two roofs,
but no rain gets in.
The project
was to build the trellises
for the tomatoes to climb
in this case,
and also the sugar snap peas.
They put these posts in,
and then we're gonna stretch
chicken wire around.
Uh, hey, uh Hey, Oak.
-Yo.
-[Tyler M] You wanna help me?
Sure.
[Tyler M] Tyler Covington,
from the moment
that he stepped
onto the property,
he has done very little work.
Take this side
and is it attaching
to right here?
-Yeah.
-All right. Cool.
But that's fine
'cause he's disabled.
And then,
also the other members
of the community told me
he didn't have to do anything,
but there was a lot of work
to be done.
Do you identify more
with the Danish Vikings
or the Norse Vikings?
Norse,
due to the fact that I
My whole Viking reenactment
is based on a Norse-Gael.
[Tyler C] Okay.
So, we need to bring these?
[woman] Yeah.
To fortify the Also--
Hi. How you feeling? You up
You up for helping
Help me bring
some of these smaller branches
-over by the tepee?
-[woman] If I don't feel good.
[Tyler C] I'm here to relax.
I'm here to get healthy
and revitalize and get
more clarity for myself.
So, do you want me
busting my ass?
Or am I here to relax?
Which the [bleep] is it?
You think
You think you can do that?
I've tried to get him
to help me out
to do some stuff,
but he starts
breathing really heavily
and he has to take a break.
He has to sit down.
Yeah, right over there.
Okay.
[Tisheila]
I know that he has a injury
and I'm empathetic to that,
but you need to figure out
where you can get in and help.
[Tyler C] Whew.
I have every intentions
of helping this community,
you know,
physically and doing whatever
they may do
that's conducive for me.
But, you know,
at the same time,
I needed adequate rest.
Whew.
This wind, it's taking
the breath out of me.
[chuckles]
Like, this is not
a place for someone
that has that bad
of health problems.
This is This is no joke,
like he has no business
being here.
[country music playing]
[Jessica]
I definitely like Julia.
She's been very nice.
Before here,
the only faces that I saw
were Tree and Julia,
so I definitely thought
that they were the leaders.
Like, in the council or, like,
in any group conversation,
I feel like people
kind of looked at Julia
if they want any clarity
on anything.
But she's very, like, low-key.
Hey, what are you doing
over here?
-No.
-Okay. It's pretty easy.
So, you're gonna hold
one hand here,
one here, line up,
so you're gonna just follow
that line
with this little zero.
I feel, like,
immediately inspired
to, like,
take Jessica under my wing.
I've been
Jessica maybe before,
you know, and so,
like, I kind of could see
how she might, like,
evolve in this process.
Okay.
Ready? [chuckles]
Extra pressure.
You got it.
[machine whirring]
-Woo!
-Yay!
-I did it.
-Hell, yeah. That was awesome.
-That wasn't too bad.
-[Julia] Like a Skilsaw.
-A Skilsaw.
-Badass.
Jessica is, like,
seeking a new experience.
Even though she's never camped
or done anything
like this before,
she is just kind of, like,
putting herself
in this environment
just to push herself
out of her comfort zone.
And so, I think
that's really admirable.
Are you typically, like,
one of the builders here?
Like, have you been building
for a while?
Yeah. I started
I always just,
like, would practice
and stuff at The Garden.
I used to build
a bunch of stuff
that would, like,
completely fall apart. Yeah.
It's good to see
a woman here
-[Julia] Yeah.
-like, doing it, you know?
Yeah. I used
to be really intimidated
when it was like eight guys
and I would be, like,
trying to help.
Well, like jumping in, yeah.
-My inspiration. [laughs]
-[Julia] Yeah.
[Jessica]
We just kind of, like,
naturally clicked a little bit
and I feel
like when I talk to her,
she gets more, like, girly.
Yeah. This seems like
it's probably
really new for you, right?
I never thought
I would even touch a drill.
[Julia] Oh, yeah.
Like, I have no reason to
back in LA.
-Right, right, right.
-My friends would be, like,
taking many photos
of me right now.
-[laughs]
-Before I was like, "Okay.
I'll probably be
in the kitchen." You know?
Right. Yeah.
I'll be with,
like, the kids or whatever,
but I'm with power tools now.
Yeah. On a job site, yeah.
It's like that.
-It's awesome.
-This is so exciting.
[Julia] Hell yeah.
Thank you
for showing me the ropes.
You got it.
[Jessica]
One of the little girls,
she was like, "Oh, you took
some of your nails off."
And I was like,
"No, they fell off."
So, I'm down
to seven of the 10.
They look kind of cool.
So, at this point,
I'm a big outsider here
and I'm definitely
being treated like that.
They're hospitable
the first 24 hours
I was here,
I'm thankful for that.
But after that, it's just
You guys don't really
practice what you preach.
[laughs]
[Tyler C] But I'm there
to test myself
physically and mentally.
I want the full experience.
I want to learn
all the trades
that other people
are gonna show me.
But I don't get it.
These
Some of these people's tactics
really rack my brain.
I don't know,
maybe it's just me
and my personality
'cause I'm not them.
I'm not a [bleep] hippie.
If you wanna be a hippie,
be a hippie. That's not me.
[Xans yodeling]
Hey, I just came down
to speak to Oak.
If y'all need a couple
more minutes, let me know.
Well, we're busy.
Mind if I interrupt?
First of all, thank you
for allowing me to be here.
I come because there's,
like, some people
are having issues
with you in some kind of way.
They're looking for mediation.
I don't know who I upset.
I just woke up and came
right down here today.
Okay.
Well, Tyler's really upset.
-[Tyler C] Tyler?
-[Xans] Yes.
[Tyler C] New to me.
It's up to you guys
to figure out why.
I've always said
I'm a nice guy
until you force me not to be.
Talk [bleep],
we're gonna exchange words
and hopefully,
it doesn't go beyond that.
-[Tyler C] What do you want?
-[Xans] I'd like for you,
Tyler,
to just talk about,
like, why you're upset,
where the feelings
are coming from,
and then just try and be nice.
All right. So, for the past
couple of nights,
like, everybody can hear
your phone conversations.
Like, every single person
that walks by.
Like, I've heard you
talk about Jag.
I've heard
you talk about everything.
And then,
I was just made aware
that you've been
talking [bleep] about my wife,
that she's so insecure
that she's gonna divorce me
for letting me
stay here, is that true?
I said something
along those lines.
But, I mean,
I'm not in your marriage.
-I don't know.
-No, you don't know.
But every time
you open your mouth,
there's an actual
consequence to that.
-What's that consequence?
-This right here.
[clears throat] I stand
behind everything I say.
You think my wife's insecure
that she thinks she That
-To the point where--
-I think you're insecure.
You think I'm insecure?
In what way?
[Tyler C] I mean,
I don't know, buddy.
I mean, you told everybody
you're insecure.
You told the whole commune.
Actually, I'm pretty confident
in the fact
that I actually have
something to contribute here.
-[Tyler C] Okay.
-And then, the fact
that I know
my wife understands
that I have something
to contribute here
-[Xans] Can I ask?
-we're pretty Hold on.
I think what it is,
is that your
You and your wife,
based on your loud
conversations,
that you guys
are very insecure that--
Oh, just shut No.
You gonna shut
your [bleep] mouth on that.
[Tyler M] No.
I'm not gonna shut my mouth.
No. No, no,
because that ain't
That ain't true.
-Just like
-Mmm-hmm.
you saying you're not,
so you can make your own
you can make
your own criticism,
-but that ain't true.
-I'm willing
But I want the smoke.
You think I care?
-Come down here. Talk to me.
-I am.
I mean,
deliver the smoke, buddy.
-This is what this is.
-[Tyler C] Okay.
Well, then what's your point?
I'm saying you're putting
You're projecting your own
relationship on somebody else.
No, sir, I'm not.
-Oh.
-No, I'm not. No, I'm not.
Ask anybody that's listening
to your [bleep] conversations
at night, bud.
I don't know
if all of your observations
need to be spoken aloud.
-Well, that's my opinion,
darling.
-[Xans] Okay.
-[Tyler C] I mean, you
-[Tyler M speaking]
Y'all are Y'all are
very outspoken too.
And also, my
You've been pissing
on her [bleep] bus wheels.
-Oh, I did the bus.
-[Tyler M] Which, like--
I pissed under the bus once
and I had no idea
First of all,
I had no idea
she was in there.
It was thundering
It was thundering
and it was It was
A heavy rain came.
Am I gonna piss in my tent?
No.
I didn't know
she was in there.
It's a [bleep] bus.
Anything else?
This was nothing like
I anticipated coming into,
and it's my opinion
that I am already outcasted
from the first couple days
that I'm here
that I'm not liked
because I'm not like you guys.
Because I'll be honest,
there's been several times
I've tried to start small talk
in the kitchen,
I get ignored
sitting right there
in front of somebody.
Turn the cheek.
That's happened to me
several times.
When I was talking with you
yesterday,
and you just shut me out.
I told you I was having
a bad mental health day
from the very beginning
of the conversation.
I understand that.
And I was trying to help you.
-[Xans] Okay.
-I was trying to talk
to you and help you.
This isn't about me.
This is about you and Tyler.
-Stop deflecting.
-Oh, so, what I'm just saying
about being shut up
by the community
when I try to talk to you,
I'm
-You're one of the examples.
-[Xans] Okay.
-That's fair.
-[Tyler C] So, now,
you're shutting me out again.
[Xans] Okay.
I think I made a boundary.
-I said I'm having a bad day.
-[Tyler C scoffs]
[Xans] You wanted
to continue talking.
-Okay. Okay.
-[Xans] I tried to, like,
-be a part
of the conversation.
-This is my point.
-[Xans] Okay.
-This is my point. Okay.
[Xans] All right.
Him saying that
no one's being nice to him
is complete [bleep].
Not only can he really not
do things physically
due to his disability,
he's also, like, rude.
You can't be both
and still be liked.
I'm gonna go work on the roof.
[dramatic music playing]
[Tyler C grunts]
Tyler heard my conversation,
but whatever. I don't care.
I mean, I have nothing
to hide from what I say.
It is what it is. But it's
just more confirmation.
It's like shoving a circle
in a square peg.
These people are saying
they're not a cult
and they don't have
leadership.
There's no hierarchy.
That's not the way it is.
But before my exit, I've got
one more person to talk to.
I've got some things
I wanna share with him.
[dramatic music playing]
Tree.
Tree.
Tree.
[Tree] Yo.
[tense music playing]
[Tyler C] Tree.
Tree here?
-Tree.
-[Tree] Yo.
-[Tyler C] Hey.
-[Tree] Hey.
[Tyler C] You come outside
for a second?
[Tree] Yeah. Do you wanna be
on my live stream?
[Tyler C] No.
No. No.
You know, the whole point
for me to come out here
was to learn how to survive
in the worst
circumstances possible.
It's doomsday,
it's the apocalypse,
there's a zombie attack.
But these people,
if this is what
I gotta rely on, I'm screwed.
Tree, I wanna come
talk to you.
I wanted to be friendly,
but direct.
Okay.
I'm leaving today.
I have been outcasted
this whole time
since the first day
I've got here.
And I felt that I have
been mistreated.
-I have tried to I--
-Well, you've been mistreated?
-Yeah. I mean, I have been
-How exactly?
I've been trying
to talk with people
down in the kitchen,
been ignored.
I tried to come up
and talk with people about,
"Hey, how's your day?
How's it going?"
When nobody asked me,
"How are you doing?
How's your How's your back?
Or how'd you sleep?"
But everyone's talking
to each other
-Mmm-hmm.
-but not to me.
It's been hard
to get along with people
for God knows
for whatever reason
'cause I'm not a part
of your cult.
What you've just said right
here is really dangerous.
You could get me murdered
for what you said.
You said some
very dangerous words
that I was and what this is.
I was looking at you
as a leader.
That's why I'm coming to you
telling you these things.
And so, don't do that. This--
So, do I got the wrong person?
Well,
you're putting me in a
You're trying to put me
in a position of leadership.
This is a community of people.
I just notice that people
look up to you more
than others.
-That's the way I've got it.
-Because I'm a good person.
I'm cool.
Like, people like me.
That's what This is
A lot of community
is about social
Sociability.
-Okay.
-I'm going around
and trying
-Yeah.
-to introduce myself
and nobody wants
to [bleep] talk to me.
-Yeah.
-So, why the [bleep]
do I wanna be here?
You can't just come in here
and expect everyone's gonna be
your best friend
-after three days.
-But I thought
that this community
was all about any walks
of life.
I mean, everyone's family.
And then, two days later,
I don't feel so welcome.
Well, I think a part of it
is also your own attitude too.
You came here
and you started to, like,
be rude and mean
to a lot of people.
So, I'm just giving
you scenarios.
I mean, now, I'm coming
to you with my feelings hurt,
and then you're saying
it's all in my [bleep] head.
-So, I'm--
-I'm coming to you now
and you're saying
it's all in my [bleep] head.
This guy called me
a cult leader.
-Good job, mate.
-All right.
[laughs]
Don't be such a [bleep] bully.
[laughs] Oh, yeah?
How did I bully you?
You know what? There's a
bigger bully than you.
Oh, yeah, the US government.
-Yeah.
-How did I bully you?
This is [bleep].
So stupid.
Like, of course,
he's gonna feel outcast.
He can't walk
for [bleep] sake.
I mean, you can't just expect
to be best friends
as soon as we you meet.
That's some weird
indoctrinating cult.
We're not some [bleep]
indoctrinating cult.
[Tyler C grunts]
Thank [bleep] God.
So, if I'm not in your clique,
that means you just have
to outcast me
when you're so inviting.
[scoffs]
Get the [bleep] out of here.
I ain't got time
for that [bleep].
And that's why I am
terminating my experience
a little early.
They're not as peace-loving
and inviting
as they say they are.
That's
It's a crock of [bleep].
Because if you're in a clique
and you have outsiders,
this is the way
we [bleep] do things.
If you don't like it,
then you're gonna be
treated differently.
That is why you are labeled
and stamped cult.
Yo-ho.
[Patrick] It's encouraged
in our community
to, like,
really extend a hand,
even if it's not appreciated
sometimes.
[Tyler C] Free at last.
[Patrick] There has been
different accusations
of inner circle kind of thing.
I think it comes
from like a lack of trust
and a fear of being
not part of, you know.
I had a dream.
And my dream was leaving
the [bleep] hole.
But Oak just kind
of sat around a lot.
We tried to do good for him.
But with Oak,
it's more of a social problem.
It's more of, like,
a spiritual problem.
It takes effort in order to
try to get along with others.
[acoustic music playing]
So, we're about to go
dumpster diving.
I just get so excited, guys.
I'm literally the cheesiest
person ever.
She's ready to go.
[mimics fanfare]
[laughs]
[trumpet playing]
[cheers and laughter]
[Magic]
All right, y'all, we're doing
the dumpster thing.
-Are you ready?
-Dumpster time!
Yes, we're ready.
You'll be amazed
at what you find.
I've been digging in the trash
for, like, six years now
and I'm still blown away.
It's just like, how can so
much end up in the trash?
I kind of find out
we're going dumpster diving,
which does not sound fun
to me at all.
You want it to be, like,
quick in and out
because if somebody
catches you in there,
like a store owner
might come out back
to throw something away
and they see you in there,
they're like,
"Hey, get out of my trash.
That's my trash."
Isn't it usually juicy down
at the bottom of the
-[woman] Sometimes.
-Oh, yeah.
[Tisheila] Okay.
So, I need to change my boots.
So, I need to put
on my rain boots because
I'm thinking leftovers
and mice and roaches
and just all kind
of nasty [bleep].
A big reason that people throw
stuff in the trash is, like,
one orange will be bad
or one potato or one pepper,
one apple and they just throw
the whole thing away.
50% of the food
in the US is going to waste.
20% from the farm,
20% from the supermarket,
and 10% in your fridge,
in your bin.
There is waste all around us.
We could be living
in more abundance,
but we just throw it all away.
-Are we doing this?
-[Magic] Let's do it.
Awesome. [cheers]
Okay.
All right. [chuckles]
[Jag] All aboard.
[instrumental music playing]
Bring us back some dinner.
We love you.
Love you, guys.
First, gotta go do
a dumpster run.
We got Magic here.
We got Moon. We got Jag there.
And then,
we got all these new people
going on their first
dumpster dive.
[instrumental music playing]
[Magic] Are we ready?
-[man] Let's get it.
-Yeah.
-[woman] Let's go.
-Yeah.
-Team dumpster.
-Two, three
[all] Team dumpster.
[instrumental music playing]
[woman] Chips.
[Magic] We got coffee.
-[woman 1] Ooh.
-[woman 2] Yay.
-Chips.
-And they're pork rinds.
Oh, wait.
It's crunchy still.
The raccoon used to live
in the woods.
It used to be able to forage
off the land just like us.
We used to be able to forage.
Now, we're in the cities
just like the raccoon is,
trying to scavenge
what we can
and living on dumpsters.
[laughs]
Come here, darlings.
[man] Oh, my God.
[Ricky] We're able to find
some good things
and some bad things.
But at the same time,
you have to taste it
to see if it's good or not.
So, it's like Russian
roulette.
First time for everything.
And this guy in a raccoon
costume is telling me
that he never got sick, so I
guess I have to trust him.
Ugh.
[woman] Nice bacon.
-[man] Here's the meat shop.
-[woman] Okay.
I'm seeing
the world's best bacon
or some type of
sign right here,
so I'm actually
pretty excited about this.
We'll just spread out.
[woman 1] We're looking
for a dumpster.
-[woman 2] What is that thing?
-I don't know.
[Tisheila]
They don't have dumpsters.
They just have garbage cans.
[woman] That looks like
buried like this, had like--
-Oh!
-Ooh, lie low.
-What is that?
-[woman] What?
[laughter]
-[woman] What?
-[Tisheila] What was that?
-Oh.
-Yeah, baby!
[Tyler H] Tisheila finds
a severed deer head.
For me, I'm thinking
we can use that.
[woman 1] It was such
a typical reaction.
-[woman 2] Yeah.
-Keep it over there.
I don't play with those.
[laughter]
We can use the antlers
for many different things,
mainly decorating.
I mean,
it was a pretty cool find,
but it wasn't bacon.
Oh, Sheila and Jessica,
are you guys ready
for the next one?
-I'm over that.
-[Tyler M] You two getting in.
-You guys wanna try it?
-We're getting in?
[Tyler M] Yeah.
-[woman 1]
Now, we're right here.
-[woman 2] Perfect.
[Magic] Well, I mean,
the bus is parked.
I don't know
if we can open them.
-[Jessica] I'm really nervous.
-[Tisheila] Our turn, girl.
-You ready?
-[Tisheila] You got it.
I'm putting my hair
up for this.
[woman] Let me use that.
[Tisheila] Oh, my word.
Oh, that's all you guys
right there.
I can't believe
I'm doing this.
[Tyler M] Move in.
-Oh, my God. Was that a roach?
-No, that wasn't.
No way What
No, no, no, no.
There's no There's no
roach. There's no roach.
I know it sounds gross
eating a dumpster grape
or eating a glazed doughnut
out of a soggy box.
But you can just make wine
with those dumpster grapes.
-Oh.
-Are you all right?
[Tisheila laughs]
[Jessica] Okay. Okay.
[woman]
You guys are doing great.
-Yeah, but the--
-Oh [bleep] He might actually
be in there.
-Don't [bleep] say that.
-No. Right there.
[Jessica]
It was kind of thrilling
in a way, like we're just
kind of, like, raccoons,
like stealing
from the dumpster.
-[laughter]
-[woman] [bleep]
That was not nice.
Yeah, good job, guys.
Never thought I'd be saying
that phrase in my life,
but here I am.
[tense music playing]
[Tree] Every time
that Tisheila and Ricky
and Jessica walk by a bin now,
they're gonna think
what's in there?
Is there something in there?
That's powerful.
Catch.
[laughter]
Sorry.
[Jessica] Dumpster diving
made me realize
just how much waste there is
and how much stores just
throw away left and right
for no reason at all.
And it's truly like one man's
trash,
another man's treasure.
[Tyler M] These people
are actually very good
at dumpster diving, farming.
What they really lack in
is bushcraft skills, survival.
And that is an area that
I can really help them out in
because that is where
I really thrive.
[instrumental music playing]
[Jessica] Self-care here
is a completely
different ballgame.
It's about embracing
like your natural self.
But I don't know.
When I start to smell myself,
that's a red flag.
I see there's some
community soap.
I brought my own.
Yeah, it's not too bad
I guess. [chuckles]
Oh.
Okay.
It's cold.
Okay.
All my eyelashes
are off completely.
I have seven nails on,
so I'm kind of roughing it
right now.
Oh, my gosh.
I guess this is like
a good time to check
for ticks at least.
Time for the face.
Oh, my Lord.
[Tyler M] So
have you ever done
anything like this before?
[Tree] Hunted? No.
And I've never even
set out a trap.
I've been wanting
to learn for so long.
[Tyler M] Well,
you're gonna learn today.
It was consented on
that I couldn't hunt
on the property. But now,
now that I've been
accepted in the community,
I'm no longer scared
that I'm gonna get kicked out.
This is a really good spot
right here.
Because guess what?
I am an equal now.
If I got to bump heads,
in order to get [bleep] on,
so be it.
-All right.
-I'm so much smaller
than you now.
-[laughs]
-Sure.
[laughs]
[Tyler M]
I wasn't born a leader.
I was very timid growing up.
I was a little [bleep] head.
The military is what drove me
to become who you see
sitting before you.
-Now, look at this.
-Whoa!
Okay, okay. That's fast.
[Tyler M]
Places like The Garden,
they say they don't have
a leader.
And I can see
how that's beneficial,
but if the [bleep]
actually hits the fan,
someone's gonna need
to take charge.
And this is gonna be tied
to the tree,
and then the other end
is gonna be the snare.
So, when the animal gets
caught into it,
it tries to take off running,
triggering the other end
to the tree
springing up into the air.
And then [makes sound]
How did you get into all this?
Being a survivalist
and being a prepper.
[Tree] So, what are you
prepping for?
[Tyler M] I am just prepping
for when the United States
economy collapses.
That's an actual real thing.
This whole process of this
whole land and everything
has been a wet dream to me.
As a prepper, like this
is exactly what I imagined.
Taking a raw piece of land,
and then turning it
into something sustainable,
something out of a
out of a book.
What about you? Is this kind
of what you envisioned?
It's just not necessarily
everything that I want.
Now, I'm not trying to create
spaces in case the world ends.
I'm creating spaces
so that people can change
their lifestyle
so the world doesn't end.
Describe to me, like,
your absolute perfect
utopian vision
of a land like this.
I would want a situation
where, you know,
we're growing our own food.
We're hosting these parties
every week for the world
to be able to come to.
[Tyler M]
So true self-sustaining.
[Tree] Self-sustaining,
-off-grid, you know, party.
-Community.
If we're gonna make living
off the land an option,
we have to be able
to beat capitalism.
And capitalism is so good.
You're able to have access
to anything you want
at any moment at a time,
24/7 a week.
There is something happening
in every single city.
It's a hard thing to travel
for some people
because they are so attached
to the material world
and the safety
that that brings them
because we have to fill
our needs with material goods.
The Our semen that creates
life, that is our material.
Like, not your [bleep] iPhone,
not your car,
not your [bleep] home.
I know Patrick has a lot of,
like, influence,
but does he have the same type
of way of thinking?
[Tree] No. God, no.
Because it's
What you're talking about
is a little different than
what's happening right here.
And I have somewhat
of a different vision.
This, all of it is great.
Except for me,
I think a lot of people here
right now wouldn't necessarily
like my version of it
because my version
of community is more
my wife and I are in charge.
If you want a better
life instead of living
on the street,
you got to listen
to what we say
because this 100% consensus,
like it
It's It can be
aggravating sometimes.
Like, I wanna go hunting,
and then all it takes
is one person
to be like, "Sorry,
you have to do not that."
Yeah.
Living off grid is definitely
not for the faint of heart.
I think I have a really good
handle on things
and how to lead
and how to influence people
to do things correctly
the first time.
Having this kumbaya crap,
it's ineffective,
and there's a lot of people
in this community also think
that the way they do things
is ineffective.
It would be a
It would be a lot different.
Look Okay.
But I want to let you know
what you just said
is really dangerous
and that you could actually
put a lot of people's lives
in danger.
You just said a community
where you and your wife
-are the leaders.
-[Tyler M] Yeah.
-That's a cult.
-Yeah.
[tense music playing]
[Tyler M] Heather's bisexual.
If you wanted to experiment,
we're open.
Is this my initiation?
[Tisheila speaking]
But it'll definitely make
someone back up off you.
Today is my 10th day.
I really would like
to stay here.
So, we're gonna throw
a sexy party.
-[cheers]
-[woman] Yeah, let's go do it.
[Patrick]
But that's not sustainable,
you can't have
a perpetual party.
[Tree] Me and Patrick,
we've just been having
our issues.
[woman]
Get out, get out, get out!
-[sobs]
-[Tree] Stop filming.
-[man] Tree.
-You have put in us
all in danger.
Stop filming.
[woman] I really don't see
how they think
getting me off the land
is going to end my journey.
