The New Stanford Prison Experiment (2026) s01e04 Episode Script

A New Order

[tense, dramatic music playing]
[buzzer sounding]
[Major B.] Officer Hudson,
Officer Washington, Officer McDaniel,
Officer Miloki, Officer Lee,
you are no longer guards.
You are now inmates.
[music intensifies]
Oh, man.
[chuckles]
I don't think anybody expected
such a drastic change.
They're coming in with us.
[laughs] I couldn't stop laughing.
Y'all are gonna head up to the break room,
where you will be stripped of your badges
before you go through intake.
[Paramore] Hudson's clearly not happy
about that at all.
And I don't know
if the guys want him coming in with us.
-[door slams shut]
-[music fades]
[insects chirping]
[Washington] It ain't no big deal.
I expected to be an inmate
from the beginning.
-[Chris Lee] So did I.
-Me too. Yeah.
[Chris Lee] That's where
my whole mental preparation was.
-It's no big deal.
-[Chris Lee] Yeah.
-You're feeling some type of way.
-[Hudson] Mm-hmm.
[McDaniel] Let's hear it.
-That was some hoe-ass shit.
-[dramatic music playing]
I have absolutely nothing to prove
as an inmate.
You know, I'm aggravated. I'm like,
none of us had lost order of the pod,
and the pod had never got out of hand.
I feel like I came in, I did a good job
with it, created a system,
and it worked.
It just don't even make sense anymore
at this point.
-[McDaniel] So, your job is done then?
-I got nothing to prove from here on out.
[music intensifies]
Chet Hudson,
he seems to be having
a hard time processing being a prisoner.
Y'all come stand over here.
He's definitely gonna be a problem
at this point.
Fall out the door.
I'm gonna leave this in here
for y'all's convenience.
[Chris Lee] All right!
[Correra] Hudson was so pissed.
-[Faussette] Dude, he was so locked in.
-Yeah, he was.
[Faussette] He was staring at Major, bro.
His face turned red.
[laughing]
The shoe's about to drop, bro.
[dramatic music playing]
[tense, dramatic music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
[man 1] Basically, we're gonna
be starting from day one again.
-[man 2] Yup.
-[man 3] Yeah.
Y'all still over there with that…
Don't try to bring us in it.
Yeah, I'm chilling.
My nerves already shot right now.
I don't need none of that extra shit, bro.
-Keep a lookout.
-You gotta look through the bottom.
Naw, it's better right here.
'Cause you can see 'em walking past.
[Lee] Looks like we've got
a lot of inmates on edge right now.
[Brooks] Right, and rightfully so.
That's because we're moving
into the third phase of the experiment,
which is… role reversal.
[Lee] At this point,
the participants obviously know
that the former male guards
will become inmates,
and our three female guards will work
together as an all-female day shift.
I am shook right now.
-I'm like, "What just happened?"
-[Gaona groans]
What they don't know
is we'll have a brand-new night shift
made up of former inmates.
[Brooks] That's right.
Before all this went down…
-[producer] Hey, Jeff?
-Yeah?
[producer] I'm going
to cut you off right now.
-[man] Follow me.
-Yup.
[Brooks] We took three inmates
out of the pod,
Brendan, Pete, and Jeff.
We're taking these inmates
who had been punished the most
by those who had power,
and now we're handing them the most power.
And these three were clearly
the lowest in the hierarchy,
especially Brendan,
and that's why it's so interesting
that he's being brought back
into the experiment as a guard.
For me, this is like
the heart of the experiment.
What happens when you take power away
from some and give power to others?
These three, with the least amount
of authority we've placed into power,
how are they going to regain order?
They have no respect.
Are they gonna be able to control
the prison? We'll see how they do it.
It's gonna send ripples
throughout the experiment either way.
[Brooks] That's right.
Stand right there and face me.
[tense music playing]
[Major B.] You three
are no longer inmates.
You are now the night shift guards.
[Zaremba] I gotta give a hug real quick.
[exclaiming excitedly] My dog!
[exclaiming continues]
All right, guys.
[Zaremba laughs] We were just hugging.
-Get changed.
-[dramatic music playing]
As an inmate, I definitely have faced
conflict, self-doubt.
No more 23 and 1, baby!
I decided to trust my gut
and just start questioning
what is the balance of power here,
and why is no one questioning that?
It resulted in excessive punishments.
-[Washington] Get out of bed. Come on.
-For what?
-'Cause he said so.
-We're talking to you.
You guys are letting the badge
get to your head, fellas.
We've been through a lot, us three,
and I'll remember the ones out there
who put me into 23 and 1,
the ones who didn't have my back,
the ones who could've helped me
and just turned their back
and literally chuckled.
Officer Hardey, nice to see you.
Now as a guard, I can easily say,
"Hey, let's go full-on spite mode."
-Follow me.
-Got it.
If we're gonna look back,
we can count score,
but I don't think
you wanna play that game.
[Major B.] Understand this.
You're going to have a hard time
going down there and taking control.
Reason being, number one,
you were just inmates.
[Cook] I think
we are in a very tough spot.
The majority of individuals
that are currently inmates conform,
do what they're told.
But how do we earn the respect
of all of the inmates
when we were the same individuals
that were just challenging authority?
[Major B.] I'm gonna go over the rules
and read them out.
"There will be absolutely no swearing
by inmates."
"At no point in time should there be
anything on their heads."
Headbands.
[Cook chuckling]
They are to do as they're told,
respect you
and the authority that you hold as guards.
I expect you to hold them accountable.
If you cannot hold them accountable,
you will be replaced.
-[Cook] Understood.
-They are not your friends.
You are guards,
and you have a position of authority.
[Hardey] I'm sure most of the guys
are gonna be a little bit upset
just seeing me in this uniform
because I think
everyone thinks that I left.
But the reason why
I didn't leave or anything
is because I kinda just wanted
to see what happens next.
You guys need to be taught
how to put on a uniform
because both of you,
and I don't know about you,
but you have your belt on backwards.
Okay?
[Hardey] It's not gonna be easy
for anybody,
especially the ones
that see things so much differently
when it comes to respecting authority.
Take this badge, exercise your authority,
or I will replace you.
[Hardey] If you really believe
in authority,
it shouldn't really change much
who has, uh, the badge on.
Follow me. Let's go.
I ain't got time. Let's go.
[dramatic music playing]
[operator on radio]
911. What's your emergency?
[computer keys clacking]
[computer beeps]
Hudson!
[dramatic music playing]
-[officer] How old are you?
-Twenty-seven.
-[officer] How tall?
-6'2".
So, during the intake process,
the momentum changed
right then in that moment.
[officer] Head over to that gray wall.
Put your back up against it.
Face the camera and hold still.
[camera shutter clicks]
As far as being the guard, I mean,
that was very stimulating for me.
And being able to conduct
and order and structure,
and really never hardly have
the first bit of problems was awesome.
[officer] Your right hand.
But coming in as a inmate,
I'm honestly, like…
I'm not stimulated by that.
[officer] All right. You're going over
to Clothing Exchange 2.
[Hudson] Um, so I just got to figure out
how to make my time here worth it to me.
Just because we're not in there
as a guard,
doesn't mean that you cannot still
have some type of power over people.
Lee!
[camera whirring]
[indistinct chatter on radio]
[Zaremba] Shift assignment.
"First order of business, formulate a plan
to go and take control of the pod."
This is going to be a shock.
People aren't gonna like seeing us
walk through that door in these uniforms.
Now that the positions
are switched up a little bit,
it's not gonna be easy
to gain respect with the pod.
As soon as we see
somebody break the rules,
we have to crack down.
That's how we get respect.
We have to take this very seriously,
especially with the group of guys
that we had in the pod.
This sounds harsh.
It sounds a little bit gnarly.
-But we have to lay it down like that.
-They need it.
-I'll play bad cop all day long.
-[Hardey] He's doing all the talking.
-So we don't have anything to worry about.
-I trust you boys.
[Hardey] Jeff, I think
we're gonna make you the head guard.
[Zaremba] Yeah, that's cool with me.
I had no intentions of actually ever
choosing to be a head guard,
but Brendan and Pete insist.
We'll go over the rules.
Everything's gotta be strict
and set right now.
-[Cook] Yup. You guys ready to go?
-[Hardey] Yeah.
For me, I'm interested to see
how they're going to gain control
when they couldn't abide
by the rules themselves.
This is going to be a huge jump
for those guys
to try to step into that position.
You're right.
They can come out here and try to be fair,
but are there inmates now
who won't allow that to happen?
Who will never respect their power
regardless of what they do?
[Faussette] You don't have
to push my hand.
I do. 'Cause you don't understand physics.
[all laughing]
[Padilla] Keep it in play.
-Oh!
-Oh, man.
Quit my job, like,
a couple weeks ago just because…
-[Forrester] To come to prison?
-[Correra] To come to prison.
[Terry] Boys, we got action!
-[Paramore] Heads up, we got action!
-[Correra] Yup.
[tense, dramatic music playing]
[keys jangling]
Knew it. LOL.
Are you kidding?
[Eldridge] He's not…
He can't be. There's no way.
[Correra] No, no way.
[Cook] Well, well, well.
Has… there been some changes?
I'm… I'm… I'm shocked.
I'm genuinely shocked
trying to figure out what's going on.
[inmate] It's fucking ridiculous.
All right, everyone line up.
[Terry] Jesus Christ, bro.
There's no way this is good.
[Terry] They're gonna try
to be hard-asses.
[Terry chuckles]
[Correra] Fuck, man. This is crazy.
[Cook] First and foremost…
obviously there's been some changes.
So, in regards to the rules,
and we'll go over those now.
"No swearing." I highlighted that one. Um…
-But you guys did that too.
-Hey. Don't talk.
-[Cook] Listen.
-You guys wanted to follow order.
That's why you were here,
is to learn how to become a better man,
a better leader by following order.
The power dynamic has shifted a lot,
and the new guards,
I think they're a little nervous.
You weren't challenging yourselves
sitting there playing cards every day.
So now we have some order
coming in, actually.
[Hublitz] So, I think
they're trying to be tough,
and I don't think that's gonna go well.
I just can't take it serious, bro.
I'm trying to, like, lock in,
but I just can't.
Like, I can't.
This one. Um…
And you guys know how much I hate this,
but we have to refer
to each other by our inmate number.
For the next seven days,
don't call each other by your names,
or there will be consequences.
[dramatic music playing]
Another one that I'm not a big fan of
that was highlighted.
"Must wear your full uniform
outside of your cell."
We can't have bandanas no more. 112.
Obviously, this is a massive change.
This whole officer thing is
a pretty interesting situation
that I've been put in.
Obviously, with Officer Z
and Officer Hardey, um…
It's like making one of your worst
employees a manager, to be honest.
Absolutely. I played a role in that.
We're supposed to give you hell
is what you're asking for.
Why would you change your morals?
Weren't your morals to follow order?
Why does it matter who's in charge?
Now you're gonna change?
-[Eldridge] Not what I'm saying.
-Interesting.
If y'all gave the guards hell
the first time,
how do we pass the second half?
If anything, we were the ones
that was trying to help y'all.
-So why wouldn't you continue?
-[Cook] So obviously…
It's just not making sense.
I'll be really, really cool with you guys
after this whole thing is done.
But for the next seven days,
I am not your friend.
Never was mine.
Let's get dinner. That fair?
Let's get you dinner. You can talk shit
about us the rest of the night.
-That's fair.
-[Eldridge] I don't give a fuck.
I feel how I feel. I don't care.
I feel how I feel.
I can't sit here and act like I'm okay
taking direction from those three
because I just watched these same guys sit
and cause shit for the last seven days,
not listen or just completely rebel
against the guards.
I don't get it.
I don't know if I got it in me, bro.
I ain't gonna lie to you.
I don't know if I got it in me.
You gotta take that off.
[Padilla] No. They can kiss my ass, bro.
Well, fuck them guards, bro.
I'll take my ass home
before I let these dudes act
like they can control shit.
You can't take leadership.
You're not gonna get in my face
and act like you are the leader
when you can't even be led yourself.
Fuck y'all.
Fire their asses, bro.
I want to leave right now, bro.
I ain't gonna lie to you.
[Hardey] Boys, I forgot to close
the cell doors during mealtimes.
We gotta do that.
[Eldridge] That's what I was saying.
What I can't deal with is somebody
who has been nothing but disrespectful
from the moment we got here being a guard.
Brendan, you was just
wilding the fuck out a day ago.
You got a badge on you or whatever,
now you're gonna try to make rules on us?
-It's crazy, bro.
-You know they've been causing problems.
-[Padilla] We out. Come on.
-[Eldridge] We out of this.
[Padilla] I'm out with you. We was
in this together. We leave together.
[Terry] Oh, cell six out, bro.
-You good, man?
-[Eldridge] Bro, it's fruit for me, boss.
[Terry] Cell six just called it.
-Who?
-Cell six, both of them.
-[Correra] They said it?
-They're not dealing with it.
Are you sure?
Can I convince you otherwise?
-Let me tell you, this is what I feel…
-Talk to me about it. I want to hear it.
This is… I look at this as real life, bro.
I can't continue to do that. You know why?
In real life, shit like this won't happen.
It won't be the fact…
And I'm not trying to make a big scene.
Fellas, make your own decisions.
Let me break… For sure.
Let me tell you where I'm coming from.
This was real life.
I didn't look at this as no joke, no game.
I genuinely fucked with y'all
and valued being with every one of y'all.
I can't sit here and act like
I'm gonna be okay with that.
I won't, because in my everyday life,
I'm not awarding shit like that.
I have to stand on who I am as a person,
and I know me, as a person,
ain't gonna rock with this.
They're really leaving
'cause they don't like who's in charge?
Derrick and JP,
the whole time we were in there,
their mindsets was, "We wanna show people
we are able to take command,
take order, give up our power."
And one thing doesn't go their way,
and they leave?
I think that's super hypocritical.
Let me say this. I gotta get out of here.
My week has been great with y'all.
Like, I genuinely want to continue
the relationship that we built in here.
But for right now,
I'm getting up out of here.
So, I love each and every one
of y'all, man, straight up.
[man] Take it from the jump, bro.
[Paramore] Hug your boy for me.
Hug your boy for me.
Love on your mom.
[Padilla] I'm not about to represent
people who made us look like fools.
Let's take suggestions for cell changes.
We're open to suggestions.
First and foremost, I'm gonna give them
the respect to do their time
and say their piece.
[Pierce, emotionally] Appreciate you.
[voice breaking] I came here
to be a better leader,
better person, and better father.
In this journey, everything I shared
about myself was 100% real.
I put my life out there for people to see.
[sniffs] And, uh…
I just hope it's received well.
[sniffs, sighs]
-030, you out of here?
-Yes, sir.
-Can I shake your hand real quick?
-I can't do that for you, man.
-That's not me being me, bro.
-What? Why is that?
I respect your decision, 030.
It's good meeting you, brother.
Good meeting you.
Wow.
A lot of those guys
do not want me in there.
I'm curious to know how you feel
being in the opposite position.
Like, you're a walking contradiction
a little bit.
No, I totally get that.
You know, challenging my morals
and my beliefs and my reasonings and…
Like, for us,
if, for whatever reason,
we wanted to take the position
of not listening, not obeying…
I guess, if you wanna push that,
then you can see what happens, I guess.
I'm a guard now.
So, it's like, look,
I know you probably aren't so happy
that we are the new guards.
-But you're still in the experiment.
-I'm saying…
Hey, take care, brother.
[Padilla] Nice to meet you.
-[man] See you on the outside.
-[Padilla] Yes, sir.
It is what it is,
and let's just finish out this last week.
[Cook] It frustrated me a little bit
when they showed their character
that they didn't at least shake our hands.
Two guys that I care about,
that I'm really cool with.
Two gone.
Tough luck.
I just spent seven days in the pod
with you in a jail environment.
Funny how things change.
Can't handle the heat.
Yeah, that shift was, I think,
too much for them to handle.
Guards, it's hard for people
to respect the ones
that didn't want to respect
the process themselves.
-Our actions shouldn't change your morals.
-This is… Hold on.
If your morals
are to follow rules, then follow.
Now what you're doing is
not respecting me when I'm speaking.
-[Zaremba] I am, but--
-[Cook] This is a prison experiment.
I'm just letting you know.
Like, it's hard to make adjustments
to follow the rules with people
that weren't following the rules
when we've been trying
to pull you to be where we're at.
Everyone can make their own decision.
The feeling that we have
right now is confusion,
anger, frustration.
That has a lot to do with respect.
I'm gonna give you guys some grace.
Let you guys talk for a while, all right?
I understand this is a crazy change.
I appreciate you guys.
Hey, guys, can we just
all talk for a second?
Uh, this was a brilliant chess move.
They put people
that we really do not respect in charge
so to see to how we treat those people.
Until they disrespect us,
we won't disrespect them.
That's been the biggest thing.
We give respect. They give respect back.
If they don't,
then we don't give them respect.
I think that is
a really dangerous thought,
and I think it's counterproductive.
I joined this experiment
to learn about me.
It's not about an exchange of power, okay?
It's about what you personally
have control over.
It's not power. It's control.
I would like us to hold on
to that control and stay together.
Not a lot of people know who they are
when they're stripped of everything,
but there is nothing a person can do
that will benefit their lives more
than knowing as much
about yourself as possible.
My dad and my mom separated
when I was about 6 years old.
So I moved around a lot.
I was perpetually the new guy.
Ten different schools in 12 years.
I just learned to be quiet
and read my surroundings.
I'm not a normal person.
Like, I'm not fit to see the world.
[audience laughs]
I'm a stand-up comedian.
If you like deep tissue massages,
that is a cry for help.
Giving people a break from real life,
being able to cut your brain off
and laugh at the stuff
that sometimes makes us cry,
I derive great purpose from that.
I'm a quiet dude, but I'm finding out
I need to be a voice for the inmates.
This is just the first step.
It's going to be more,
and if we're together, it's going to work.
Authority is authority.
It doesn't matter who has it.
Authority is authority.
If you don't listen to them,
how does that end?
So just put your head down
and go forward and get it done,
because your integrity is all you have.
That's the only thing
no one can take from you,
so take good care of it.
What's everyone's point
that they're gonna leave?
-I personally don't have one.
-[Nazarov] Does anybody have a hard limit?
[man] Nobody's sticking anything
up my butt.
[all laughing]
I change my answer.
I did not know that was an option.
I change my answer.
[camera whirring]
[Correra] You have no idea
when the others are coming, correct?
[Hublitz] I missed all that.
I feel like vomiting right now because
we don't know what is happening next.
Officer Lee has…
He's… He can…
-[Hublitz] He's a lot.
-He's a lot.
-Hudson is also a tough cookie.
-Yeah, he's a wild card.
[dramatic music playing]
Hudson and Lee, they like their power.
Hudson, as a guard, he was stern.
But as an inmate,
I think he is going to go apeshit.
He's not mentally okay.
That's why I'm scared.
I have a lot of anxiety right now.
-He's a lot.
-[alarm sounds]
[inmates clamoring]
Fresh meat, boys!
[Washington] We back, bitches!
-[whistling]
-Fresh meat!
¿Qué pasa pinche putos?
[whistling and cheering]
-Good to see you, boys.
-[man] Good to see you.
Yeah, it's good. Good to be on this side.
This side of the fence.
Good.
[McDaniel] They got 878 in a girls' shirt!
[man] Are you serious?
[McDaniel laughing]
Give me the play-by-play. When did, uh…
When did they bring in the new guards?
It actually was a huge surprise
seeing those three as guards.
We struggled with them as inmates.
-Welcome to the dark side.
-[Chris Lee] Good to be here.
I always feel like the best leaders
also make good followers.
If they act anything
like they did as prisoners,
it's gonna be what I would refer to
as a shizz show.
What's up?
What's up? What's up?
[Hudson] This is just crazy to me.
These three guards shouldn't be there.
-What up, Mississippi?
-What up?
When we walked in there,
I don't think that the new guards
had control of the pod.
The attention was no longer even
on the guards or what they had to say.
It was kinda like
we can joke and bullshit now.
What up?
Hanging out. You know the rules.
You ain't supposed to lean on that.
You delivered it. [laughs]
-I ain't about that life no more.
-"I ain't about that life no more."
[Hudson] We're about to make
their fucking life hell.
First time they say
some stupid shit tomorrow,
we're going to surround them all and say,
"Fucking make us."
At this point, I'm in here with the guys.
Why not stir up shit?
I want to show them,
that, because you were a pain in the ass,
now you get to see what it's like.
You gotta help pass this along.
Tomorrow, when these three
fuckers come in,
we're gonna come in behind the door.
Block the door in,
and everybody's just gonna
slowly circle around them.
When they tell us to do something,
we're gonna be like, "Make us."
[McDaniel] The pod isn't very happy
about the night guards.
They were trying to stir shit up
with us when we were guards,
and now it's flipped, and they want
to enforce rules and tell us what to do,
which it seems hypocritical
and very aggravating
to the people who were guards
and are now inmates.
Yeah, isn't that funny how that works?
Everybody's in on this. So…
I don't know, bro. [laughs]
They've been against it the whole time.
I'm down, but you're not gonna have
the majority support for this.
[Hudson] Oh, no. Like, there's already
like 12 people already for sure in.
If you show me 12 people with this plan
right now, I'll kiss your foot.
But it's hard because I think
there's already an established
sort of hierarchy within the cellmates.
You can't just come in halfway through
and just take over, I guess.
But we'll see what happens
and who stands up,
because I'm ready to just,
I don't know, stir shit up.
What happens
when the warden comes down here?
They get their badge taken.
Hudson, I'm questionable about.
You can look it in his eyes
and you can tell he's not built like this.
I don't like the new guards either,
but I'm not trying
to be in a 23 and 1 hold
because somebody just wants to push back.
And if that happens,
there will be problems,
and I'm not trying to have problems
with no one.
[Chris Lee] But why are we coming at them
like they were coming at us?
[Hudson] I am the problem,
and I'm not the bigger person,
and that's what the fuck
is going to happen.
Everybody's in on it already.
You know, like,
you don't want to be a bitch.
-First day.
-Don't be odd man out.
Yeah.
It's like, "Dude, whoa, chill out."
These guys throw on a different uniform,
and they act like animals
and completely out of line
with what they had been acting as
as leaders.
What is this game plan?
Because you know how I am.
I'm respectful and whatnot.
But if this… If we're just
going to blow it up in flames,
then let's blow it up in flames, but…
I'm all about respect to respect.
There's no reason
we need to treat them differently
because they were prisoners before,
and we didn't like them.
We need to treat them
as if they're brand-new guards,
give them a complete, clean slate
as if we don't know them or their history.
Frankly, I'd rather develop relationships
and have a good time.
If they respect me, I'll respect them.
If they disrespect me,
then we'll see how daddy reacts.
-Daddy.
-[man laughs]
-So…
-I'll talk to you in the morning.
Bro, this is gonna be fun.
[Lee] Chris Lee and Chet have had
a lot of power and influence
that they're seeing slip away from them.
But now that Chris and Chet
are among the inmate population,
how do they engage with each other?
For someone like Chris,
who has built up the status and influence,
will he still maintain?
Will that stick with him even though
he's shifting formal power roles?
And will he prove to be a more influential
voice than Chet among the inmates?
[Lee] That's right,
because Chet seems determined
to take down those night shift guards.
So can he spur some sort of uprising?
Does he respect
any other authority but himself?
Yeah.
Last call for anything you guys need.
Water? We all good?
All right, I really appreciate
you guys this evening.
Have a wonderful sleep.
[tense music playing]
[buzzer sounds]
[tense music continues]
[Cook] I'll be honest. Um…
We were the three
that you probably would worry about.
Good job.
[Cook] Hey, I really…
I'm proud of you guys.
Yeah, you too, man.
But I'd say it's a success.
[Hudson] It's on tomorrow.
It's going down
like a fat kid on a seesaw.
Hudson's already got evil in his eyes.
-You think? Yeah?
-Oh my God. [scoffs]
You shoulda seen him.
-I've been running all of this.
-[Nazarov] Right on.
I was the head guard,
doing all of this shit.
I feel like I can hear Hudson from here.
[laughs]
He ain't gonna shut up.
[Nazarov] You're coming in from a guard.
You might be able to politic better.
[Hudson] Yeah, and now
that I'm not in that position no more,
fuck that shit.
It's about to get chaotic in here,
and I know Hudson is all about the chaos.
[laughs]
He has… He has menace in his eyes, bro.
We're gonna totally make them look
like a bunch of fucking idiots.
[Nazarov laughs]
[dramatic musical sting]
[tense music plays]
[indistinct chatter]
Um, new shift here in the daytime.
I don't think there's any notes
we need to leave, yo.
Yeah.
It's a new day. The night shift transfer
is about to happen.
The day shift is about to find out
who took over for night shift.
[Brooks] That's right.
This is another component
of our role reversal phase.
-We now have an all-female day shift.
-Yes.
These ladies have
a real opportunity to shine here.
[Brooks] Before, these women were working
alongside some very loud male voices.
Now that those voices are gone,
and they're working as an all-female team,
how will they communicate with the inmates
to gain and maintain respect?
[buzzer sounds]
-[exclaims] Oh, my God.
-Well, well, well!
What the helly?
Huh? What just happened here?
Oh, my God!
The three troublemakers are now guards.
Come on.
Immediately, I think back
to Hardey shooting the finger,
and so I'm not expecting them
to be respected,
and I'm just curious
as to how they're gonna be as guards.
[Zaremba] A little all-women shift today?
-Uh, yeah.
-Yeah, rock and roll.
[Berens] Guys, got anything
to report from the night shift?
-[Zaremba] We lost two last night.
-Really?
-[Hardey] 030 and 608.
-[Gaona] You're lying.
-[Berens] JP left?
-[Jefferson] Wait.
[Zaremba] They had a meltdown
when we walked
through those doors in our uniforms.
[Berens] Are you serious?
[Hardey] The cells are changed around
as well.
-[Berens] The cells did change.
-[Hardey] Yeah.
Did not think that 030 would leave.
He seemed like he was in it till the end.
I definitely feel like
there's still some people in the mix
that are not happy with the night guards.
It's super hard
for these inmates to respect them
given the fact that they felt
they were disrespected.
I was gonna ask,
how was that when they came in?
[Hardey] They were all very welcoming.
[Cook] Maybe Chet was a little…
I don't know if he was fully ready for it.
-I'm a little worried about him.
-You are?
-He's gonna try to bend some rules.
-[Berens] Yes.
And the reason I'm saying that
is because I know his personality, so…
I'm a little concerned
about the former guards.
They need to respect me, too.
Gonna be an issue.
Especially former Officer Hudson
because I didn't fully get that from him
when we were on day shift together.
"A trustee is an inmate who is chosen
to perform jobs
in exchange for privileges. These--"
Y'all will have y'all's own trustee,
and we'll have our own trustee.
"Select one trustee--"
[Hudson] But if they do something,
you can strip that right from them
and appoint somebody else.
Correct. It says,
"Select one trustee before--"
[Hudson] Let me say something real quick.
So, moving forward with the female shift,
uh, now I can step into being the leader,
'cause I definitely like having power.
Being a mom and then a business owner,
I've always been, you know,
kinda like a boss, right?
-How was your day?
-[child] Wait, Mom, I…
Get your bags. Let's go.
You have to have authority.
I'm type A, organized,
and a little controlling.
I don't know if you guys noticed,
but we took the microwave.
So, do not give them
the microwave back, please, tonight.
I don't think I'm scared to speak up.
You cannot be touching the podium.
-Oh, man!
-[Berens] Thank you.
But depending on
where your stance is, you know,
some people might not take power
from a woman versus a man.
I don't think it should be that way,
but I'd be dumb
if I said it wasn't sometimes. [chuckles]
I know that I'm a leader,
and I'm definitely gonna stand up
and I'm definitely gonna speak up.
You guys have more experience than us,
so do whatever you guys wanna do.
We agreed we're gonna run the day shift
like we've been running the day shift.
So, I would say women have a certain gift
that we can kind of bring to the table.
Jefferson is like, she kind of has
a little bit of a, you know,
'I'm gonna give it right to you.'"
Excuse me,
why are our stickers not up here?
Officer Gaona, she really, like, observes,
being aware of everything that's going on.
-So you guys don't have a shift lead.
-Have a nice shift.
It's gonna be him.
My kind of, like, organization.
I tend to speak out.
All right, get some sleep.
[Zaremba] Yeah.
-[Berens] Thank you.
-[Cook] Bye.
They were completely different.
[laughing]
-[Gaona] What the heck?
-[Jefferson giggles]
We gotta get downstairs.
-[Gaona] Yep.
-Go.
I think all of us combined
make a good team.
Good morning!
Good morning.
[Jefferson] Ladies, it's time to wake up!
[Berens speaking indistinctly]
[cell door clacking]
[Gaona] Oh.
Hello.
You gotta pull it really hard.
[door clacking]
You gotta snatch it.
-[Gaona] What?
-Snatch it.
[tense music playing]
-[Gaona] There you go.
-Good morning.
Good morning.
[Hudson] The women on one shift… Um…
I didn't really know what to expect.
Officer Berens and I have already
worked together as a team in a great way,
and we had mutual respect for each other.
Well… here we are.
[Hudson] But where I'm at now in this,
I hope that she knows
that I'm not listening to you.
I don't mean that like in a rude way, but…
[Gaona] Good morning, gentlemen.
It is what it is.
Good morning.
[Chris Lee] Good morning, Gaona!
[laughing] Good morning.
-Good morning.
-Morning, ladies!
-Oh, God.
-Good morning, ladies!
[Chris Lee] Hey!
Oh, my gosh!
-[Chris Lee, indistinct]
-Is this… Is this normal?
-[Jefferson] Sir!
-[Berens] Oh, shoot.
Inmate 733,
there will be no yelling in my jail.
-[Chris Lee] Not even "good morning"?
-No.
If you don't like happiness, that's okay.
-A little bit.
-This is my voice.
Want me to throw your ass in the hole?
Hey, don't want to be friendly,
I won't be friendly then.
Don't let it affect you negatively.
You can choose how you want to be.
Man, seeing Officer Lee as an inmate,
it's intimidating.
[tense music playing]
And to be honest with you,
I'm really nervous,
because I don't know what to expect.
Like, will he listen
to what we have to say?
Tai Chi. You gotta wake up the organs.
[laughs]
I've got my eye on him, but I just don't…
I don't like conflict, so…
We know there's been some changes.
Um, we wanna let you guys know
that we are still gonna run the day shift
like we've always run it.
I feel like it was going well.
You guys were respecting us,
and we were respecting you.
Can we all agree to that?
-[Jefferson] Excuse me.
-If she's talking, listen.
When she is talking,
nobody else is talking.
[Berens clears throat]
We're gonna run the day shift
like we've always been running it.
As long as you guys respect us,
we will respect you.
Some things have gotten a little lax.
Like making sure you guys are calling
each other by your inmate number,
no swearing, no spitting, no fighting.
Any questions?
All right, let's eat.
Uh, 768, you want to come pass out?
What's the best diet here?
Should I jump on gluten-free? [laughs]
Yes. Your thing is to eat breakfast
and lunch and suffer through dinner.
-[man] Y'all done?
-[Hudson] Yeah.
Thank you, sir.
[Berens] If you guys are done,
we're gonna do cleanup,
and we'll start the showers, okay?
Can we shower after rec as well?
[Berens] You don't wanna shower right now?
Not really.
Just following
all of our typical protocols.
It's your protocols now, baby.
Whatever you want.
As far as adjusting to being an inmate,
the only way that I would want to stay
in this project any longer
is to throw a wrench in the whole thing.
-From out here, it's just a prison.
-[Hudson] Yeah.
I wonder what they're talking about.
[Hudson] They told us
at the beginning of this when we came in,
-"If you lose order of the pod…"
-[McDaniel] You lose your badge.
"…we take your badge."
And that's my whole deal.
Fuck them three.
Really.
Playing that role as a guard,
it was our job to not have chaos.
And I was able to do that.
We want to show
that we can have the power.
But as a inmate, we need to rebel.
We need to do something
for the greater good of this experiment.
Let's experiment what happens
when we take over the power.
I'm down to have an experiment.
I think 90% of everyone else is not.
[tense, dramatic music playing]
I think Chet's idea
is actually not bad at all.
I think it's what the experiment should be
at some point in the experiment.
But he just came in as an inmate,
he's on a completely different level
and playing field,
and if you've only been here for 24 hours,
you're not gonna have
the majority's support for this.
It's not the right time.
When is?
I'll stand on it.
[Nazarov] You're not a guard anymore.
You are the lowest level.
And you gotta fall in line to the politics
for some time,
and then you can move your way up.
I just don't think right now
is the right time just yet.
Let us get commissary first. [laughs]
[laughter, chatter]
[Lee] Looks like Chet
will be standing alone on this one.
-He's a man on his own mission.
-He sees himself as a leader.
But now that he's been stripped
of his badge,
I think it's becoming
abundantly clear to him,
"Oh, shoot, I'm not as strong a leader
as I thought I was."
[Lee] Exactly. He just cannot take
the idea of being powerless.
Before, whether that power was real
or perceived, because of his attitude,
because his power hasn't been challenged,
will he wither
under the weight of being stripped,
or will he meet the moment in some way?
[Hudson] I really don't care
to sit in here and play kumbaya.
I just wanna prove in this experiment
that, when people unite,
no matter what,
they're in the control of the power.
[Chris Lee] There's different ways
to unite.
I ain't asking nobody to change nothing.
If you don't want to do it,
don't fuckin' do it. It's that simple.
But I'm not sitting in here
playing kumbaya
to prove something to any-fucking-body.
Hey, dude, you don't have to be here.
Those that get swayed by their emotion,
they're not powerful.
-This ain't emotion. I'm not--
-It is. It's emotion.
I think the easy thing is
to crack and be an idiot.
Crack and be an idiot.
Leading up to breakfast, I knew
Hudson was potentially going to instigate,
"Hey, let's create some action going on
in this experiment," stirring up the pod.
He wants to take this place down.
For me, like, I'm the same dude
on either side of the fence.
I'm gonna be one that speaks with reason
and tries to understand, really,
the end game of staying a full 14 days.
These guys are getting a new opportunity
to put on the guard uniform.
I'm gonna see how this plays out.
This is just me regardless.
You put a yellow uniform on me,
put a gray uniform,
I'm not gonna be a different human.
You fight against them,
then they're gonna really…
they're gonna really come up,
and be idiots, and do all their stuff.
He's wanting to play defense, not offense,
is what he's saying.
No, I just want to play
like a grown… a grown adult.
[Hudson] Chris might feel some type of way
about what I'm doing.
Me and him definitely had
two different leadership styles.
I do this every day for a living.
I live in miserable-ass fucking conditions
thousands of miles away from home.
The only reason that I would stay
is to try to get
this message across to people that,
because those three
have been a problem as inmates…
-I'm about to have some fun.
-[laughs]
…I want them to learn what it was like
having to deal with a problem
when you're in a situation
where you have authority.
-The majority is not gonna be with you.
-[man] Yeah.
It's like we can all sit here as grown men
and play arts and crafts
for another seven days for no reason.
Then you should leave.
[dramatic music playing]
[Hudson] For Chris,
this is very stimulating.
I feel like he might not see it
from my perspective.
[laughing]
They didn't even wanna try
to flip the power dynamic.
[Hudson grunts]
And so… screw it.
I'm going to do something
that is disruptive to the system.
While y'all two are in here…
Yeah.
…I want to make an announcement.
To us or the group?
Everybody.
[music intensifies]
[clicking tongue]
Officer G, are you okay
with him making an announcement?
Sure.
All right, everyone,
we have a small announcement,
if you guys could listen up a little bit.
All right, guys.
Something's about to happen around here.
[music swells, crescendoes]
[dramatic music playing]
