Blood Sacrifice (2026) s01e05 Episode Script

Episode 5

["Brother" by First Aid Kit plays]
TWO YEARS EARLIER
-[man] Thank you so much. I love you.
-[woman] Of course, sweetie. Love you.
-Later.
-See you later.
[engine starts]
[chuckles]
[door opens]
-Finally.
-Hey.
Her specialty, salmon on rye bread.
From Alma.
-Wow, she's incredible.
-[chuckles]
-Yeah, she has her moments.
-[both chuckle]
You should hold on to that one.
[partner] Look, I was thinking…
-Alma's friend, Margot.
-Mm hm.
She's looking for a guy.
I feel like you should ask her out.
-Hm. This Alma's idea?
-How'd you guess?
No, I don't think we'd be a good fit.
She kinda ignored me last time.
I won't push.
-Hm.
-[chuckles]
Well, the museum…
I guess it wasn't the most
romantic setting for a double date.
You know, hanging around Alma's workplace.
-A museum's a bad date spot?
-Nothing wrong with meeting at a museum.
It's just looking at the same painting
for 20 minutes is a little boring.
I mean, it's not like having a nice
Italian dinner with white wine, you know.
I totally get what you're saying.
Next time, then.
Uh, there won't be a next time.
Of course there'll be a next time.
We'll go to a bar and get drinks.
Don't put any pressure on it.
Just have fun.
Just drop it, okay?
Next time. We'll do that.
[phone ringing]
[tense music plays]
-[man] 112. What's your emergency?
-[woman, quietly] Help! He won't leave.
He's going to hit me.
I've never seen him like this.
You have to help me! [breathing shakily]
-[distortion on line]
-[clock ticking]
[radio beeps]
[man on radio] Calling all units.
We have an incident in Järfälla.
39-719. What's going on? Over.
[man] Disturbance in an apartment.
That's all I've got. Over.
Step on it! Go, go!
[siren wailing]
[suspenseful music plays]
[clattering coming from inside]
This one.
-[partner] Hi.
-[Peter] Good evening.
[partner] We got a report
of a disturbance at this address.
[sighs] Sorry, officers.
She shouldn't have called.
We're having a bit of an argument
but we're okay now.
Okay. Both of you? Are you okay?
-[partner] Can we come in?
-That won't be necessary.
-We'll just come talk for a minute.
-Sorry you came out here for no reason.
-[Peter] Wait! What are you doing?
-[man] Let go of the door!
-[grunts]
-[woman] Help me.
Back up! Back up! [yells]
Open the door.
Open the door. Police!
Open the fucking door! Fuck! Hugo?
I need reinforcements.
My partner was pulled into an apartment.
Copy?
[man on radio] Stand by.
-Open the door! Police!
-[cocks gun]
Hugo?
You hear me?
[tense music plays]
[man] Hey, get away from the door
or I'm gonna stab her too!
Get back!
Send medics here, uh…
[frustratedly] Do you copy?
Officer down, he's losing blood.
Have them send an ambulance
and backup immediately.
-[man on radio] Hold on, please.
-Are you there? Copy.
[man] Standby.
[quietly] Come on.
What's going on? Do you hear me or not?
[man on radio]
Nearest backup is 20 minutes away. Over.
Police! Open the door right now!
[door unlocks]
[Peter breathing heavily]
[man] Uh-uh. Put the gun… on the ground.
[woman breathing shakily]
Run next door now!
[panting]
[woman] It could have been you, Peter.
You were lucky.
-As far as your request for, uh…
-Compensation.
[woman] I don't think management
will approve that, to be honest.
You claim you called
for backup that night, but…
We have no such calls logged on our end.
Can you please inform me
of the person responsible
for dispatching officers on that night?
[woman] It's not an individual
who sets our guidelines…
-I have to know the person's name.
-…these are countrywide…
Tell me the person responsible
specifically on that evening.
-I have to know.
-[woman] Why?
-[keypad beeps]
-[indistinct chatter]
[somber music plays]
[colleague] Fucking coward.
What you gonna do, Johansson?
Same thing you did
when you left Branković for dead?
Nothing, right?
[Peter] Hugo?
Wait! What are you doing?
Police! Open the door right now!
Have them send an ambulance
and backup immediately.
Are you there? Copy.
[man on radio]
Nearest backup is 20 minutes away. Over.
[woman] If we're going to have
any success in helping you,
you're going to need
to talk to a psychologist.
Hm.
It could be too difficult
for me to talk about.
[woman] Sometimes police officers are
exposed to situations like this, Peter.
Unfortunately, that's part of the job.
[music fades out]
[woman screaming on TV]
-[crying, whimpering] Please, no!
-[man] Go ahead…
[woman] Don't do this to me!
[screaming] No!
Please don't kill me! Please!
[screaming continues]
[reporter] You have quickly become
one of the country's
most successful homicide detectives.
And with that being said,
you haven't followed a traditional path.
When you started,
you barely spent any time patrolling.
I believe all of us are a team.
And I'm sure everyone would agree
that our patrolling officers
are the backbone of the force.
[reporter] And every team
needs a leader, right?
Someone who makes the decisions
and sees the bigger picture.
[Thomas] Yeah, you could say that.
[reporter] And every team
needs a leader, right?
Someone who makes the decisions
and sees the bigger picture.
Yeah, you could say that.
[woman] Peter, the internal complaint
that you filed against management
has been closed.
I understand your frustration,
but the investigation just
doesn't support your claim.
And of course, there's the uncertainties
surrounding your actions.
You need to accept what happened
and try to move on.
If not, it will be very difficult for you
to continue working for the police.
[Peter] I need to know who's responsible
for not sending backup that night.
I need a name!
[woman] I'm sorry,
that information is confidential, Peter.
I believe all of us are a team.
And I'm sure everyone would agree
that our patrolling officers--
[somber music plays]
[indistinct background chatter]
[man] Morning, Alma.
[Alma] We move from the light
in "Gustav Vasa enters Stockholm"
on Midsummer's Eve
to the darkness in "Midwinter Sacrifice,"
which is actually the same artist's work.
Uh, and despite the brutality
you might notice here,
underneath all of the pain and suffering,
this painting represents courage.
That's my personal view on it.
As you can see, this tableau shows
the legend of King Domalde
of the House of Ynglings.
The king, in the middle,
is ready to be sacrificed
after years of failed crop harvests.
It so happens to be
my late husband's favorite painting.
[somber chanting]
[Alma speaking inaudibly]
[chanting fades out]
The painting depicts a scene in Uppsala
after many years of…
severe, uh… crop failure.
Um… In order to appease the gods,
first they sacrificed oxen.
And then when that didn't work,
they started to give, uh…
Um…
I'm sorry.
Uh… continue on, I'll be in shortly.
Hey, Alma.
[Alma] You need to stop coming here.
I came because I need you to know
I would never abandon your husband.
And I didn't.
I swear to you.
[footsteps leaving]
[Alma] First, they sacrificed oxen.
And when that didn't work…
[dark music with chanting vocals]
[woman on recording]
Help! He's going to kill me! [rewinding]
[clock ticking]
-[guard] Did you hear someone scream?
-[Peter] Yeah.
You check over there
and I'll check this way. Run!
-[Falk] No, no, no, no…
-[man] What's going on? What did you do?
Rolander, what's happening? You copy me?
[Rolander gasping for breath] Help…
Help me. Help… Help me!
[TV reporter speaking indistinctly]
[woman crying] Help me!
[indistinct police radio chatter]
[computer chimes]
NEW E-MAIL FROM BRITTA SKÖLD
ALL POLICE OFFICERS ON PATROL
ARE SUMMONED TO A MEETING
ON THE EVENING OF JUNE 13
[indistinct chatter]
[Lucas] You all have your orders.
Stand by for when I deploy you.
Follow the instructions
from your superiors.
-Don't hesitate to call for backup.
-Don't you think it's funny?
[Lucas continues indistinctly]
Sometimes they call everyone in…
Sometimes no one.
[Lucas] We've never had this many officers
assembled in one place.
And on such short notice.
This is one of the biggest deployments…
[reporter] The police officer who lost
his life in the line of duty's family
will hold a memorial service…
[man] Hey, Alfred.
[indistinct background chatter]
[reporter] Chief Lind, do you have
the name of the suspect?
[Lucas] We can confirm
that we have the name
of the suspect who is connected
to the 112 murders.
-[knocking at door]
-[man] Open up. Police.
Open up.
[Lucas] …and is being treated
after he suffered a gunshot wound
by the police on the subway.
[reporter]
Is this individual under arrest?
[Lucas] We'll make a formal arrest
when our suspect becomes conscious.
[reporter 2] Is there anything
you can tell us about the suspect?
[Lucas] We will not be sharing…
-[Max] Peter Johansson?
-That's right.
[TV chatters continues in background]
Come in.
[Lucas] …on behalf of Stockholm Police,
as well as the victims' families…
[ominous music plays]
Oh, what a fucking cliché.
[Peter] Alfred!
It's been a while.
Remember me?
Peter Johansson.
[Alfred] Yeah. Hey.
[Peter] Hey.
The whole thing's become
a bureaucracy run by guys in suits.
No one even realizes
what the job entails now.
So I…
I gave up on it.
As far as that goes,
we're in total agreement.
-It's good to see you, Alfred.
-Likewise, Peter. Really.
Do you need a ride?
Yeah.
Why not?
I'd take a ride. If you have time.
I do.
[suspenseful music plays]
[door lock beeps]
BLOOD SACRIFICE
He, um…
He could come back
so we should post officers here.
And we need to release
the information that he's a cop.
Get Peter Johansson's name
and photo out there.
[Lucas] Thomas,
don't take this the wrong way,
but you're finished
working on this investigation.
[music fades out]
-What?
-[Rebecca] We have to follow protocol.
-If Johansson is the murderer…
-Johansson is our murderer.
…then you shot an innocent man.
Not to mention, he was a fellow officer.
You need to distance yourself
from the investigation.
-We're so close to catching him.
-[Lucas] Thomas, listen to Rebecca.
Go home, all right?
You're relieved of your duty
pending investigation.
You're making a mistake.
We have evidence that proves
that the bullet fired at Anders
didn't come from your firearm after all.
We'll find out what actually happened
as soon as Anders regains consciousness.
Rebecca, you'll lead the investigation.
Natalie will be reporting directly to you.
Do it, Natalie.
Do it for Max.
Not for these two.
[door closes]
[sighs deeply]
[Thomas] Hey, sweetheart.
STRESS, ALCOHOL, NIGHT SHIFTS
-What is that?
-That's a notepad we found.
It was in the observation room next to
where we had the police therapy sessions.
Someone was listening.
And based on the handwriting,
I'd say that it's the exact same low life
who made a belated birthday card
for Bonnie just the other day.
-Okay.
-What hurts the most…
is that I've done everything
I possibly could've done lately
to make sure you could function.
So you and I wouldn't end up
falling into the same pattern.
But you… you just keep going.
And now this…
Aren't you embarrassed?
A normal person would
know how unethical this is.
How could you betray me like that?
Not to mention what it says about…
About your view of both me
and what I do for work.
These are their lives. And mine.
And you just… You just don't care at all.
-Sweetie…
-Don't. Don't.
Get out of here. You have to go.
-To go?
-I can't even look at you right now.
-Alfred…
-Don't you dare bring Alfred into this.
We don't often say this in psychology,
but your father's not
to blame this time, Thomas.
You're not like Alfred.
You are far worse.
-I'm trying…
-[footsteps approaching]
Dad, we didn't finish the book yet.
Hey, honey.
Um…
Look…
I need to go, okay?
I promise we'll finish it soon.
Okay?
See you soon.
[door opens, closes]
Hey.
Got diapers in the front,
bottles in the back, and…
-Say hi to your sister.
-I will. Thanks.
I know how much you would've
loved going with us today.
But I'm… I'm so happy
you handed your badge in.
-[chuckles]
-Okay.
-I'll see you later.
-Great. See you.
-All right.
-Okay.
[sighs]
I feel like good police officers
deserve more respect.
Absolutely, man.
And nobody's willing
to make sacrifices for it these days.
[scoffs]
You're right.
You take a left up there.
But you're not gonna take a left.
No.
Gonna tell me where we're going?
[tense music plays]
[sighs]
I know what you're wondering.
"Did he take the ride because
he didn't think I was the 112 murderer?"
"Or did he come with me because he knew?"
[suspenseful music plays]
[scoffs] Everyone'll notice I'm gone.
No, nobody will.
Thomas knows I was
visiting the museum today.
-No, you're lying.
-He's coming to find me.
Sure.
That's what I'm counting on.
-[music fades out]
-[Rebecca] His name is Peter Johansson.
Fifty-two years old, a police officer
from Hemfosa on sick leave.
We have no idea where he is,
so our job is to go out and find him.
We can issue a national alert,
get the media to help…
We also know he lost his partner,
Hugo Branković, after a call-out in 2024.
-Most of you may remember this.
-What about his cell phone?
If Peter has a phone,
then it's under a different name now.
Remember, he worked
as a police officer for 25 years.
Whatever you've thought of,
he's already one step ahead. Okay?
-[woman clears throat]
-[man] Yeah…
I wanna check Max's place.
He identified Johansson.
I wanna see what's there.
So it won't be for nothing.
Yeah.
Smart.
-[dog barking]
-[birds chirping]
[sighs in frustration]
Hey, Pop.
[fly buzzing]
Anybody there?
[sighs]
[faucet dripping]
[scoffs]
[fizzing]
-[ominous music plays]
-[clock ticking]
[knife clinks against window]
So, I've already checked into the room.
We'll just head up there
like two old friends on a road trip.
After you.
[car lock beeps]
[Peter] Don't do anything stupid.
Stop.
[keypad beeps]
[music fades out]
[zipper opens]
This is a little on the nose, right?
You know that.
All of this
"Midwinter Sacrifice" nonsense.
I mean, regardless of what
you're trying to say, Peter…
Your credibility's gone out the window.
-Because of this crap.
-You're trying to provoke me?
-No, no.
-Yeah, you are.
You want a reaction,
but it's not going to work.
Lock yourself up to that.
Now what?
[sighs deeply]
[Peter] The model trains,
what's that all about?
You were in charge
of half the Stockholm police force,
and now you're at home playing with toys?
-I wouldn't say they're toys.
-[Peter] Yes, they are.
They're a hobby.
Why toy trains?
Because when Tommy was little,
we'd get together and go train spotting.
[Peter] You and Thomas?
That's sweet of you.
We used to go down to the train station,
stand by the tracks,
watching the trains go past.
[melancholic music plays]
We used to go there most nights.
He probably doesn't remember it
all that well, but…
But for me, it was… [sighs]
Then this damn job got in the way.
I was always gone at night because of it.
I think that's when I lost sight
of Thomas and his mother.
I'm sure you know what that's like too.
I don't know, actually.
Get some sleep, Alfred.
It's been a long day.
But tomorrow will be much shorter.
More like midwinter.
[reporter] Rumors are growing about
the body found in the woods
close to Hemfosa,
allegedly connected to the 112 murderer.
As Friday approaches,
the search for the 112 murderer
is quickly becoming
Sweden's biggest police investigation…
FRIDAY
[Petra] This is the stuff
Max was working on.
Take it.
All of it.
Or else it's going in the trash.
PETER JOHANSSON
COMPLAINTS TO THE POLICE AUTHORITY
FORM FOR COMMENTS AND COMPLAINTS
WHO WAS IN CHARGE THAT NIGHT?
WHY DID NO ONE SHOW UP?
[suspenseful music plays]
[cellphone ringing]
[groans]
Thomas Berg.
Hello?
[Alfred] Thomas… [breathing heavily]
Dad, I'm here.
[Alfred] Thomas… Help me…
Please… Hurry.
What's your location?
-Tell me.
-[call ends]
[suspenseful music continues]
[music fades out]
Excuse me.
Did this man check in here?
Have you seen him?
-[receptionist] No, I'm sorry.
-Can you tell me if you've seen him?
-[man] Uh, yeah. Yesterday.
-Yesterday?
-[man] Uh-huh.
-Okay…
This man booked a room here,
I need to know the number.
-[cocks gun]
-[breathing shakily]
Housekeeping.
[keypad beeps]
[phone ringing]
Hello?
[Alfred] Thomas, it's almost over.
-Is Peter there?
-You need to come.
-Where's he keeping you?
-You need to find me.
-Answer my question.
-Come alone. No backup.
-Come where?
-It's important. Only you.
-What's happening?
-[call ends]
Say, "Come by yourself."
And he'll definitely have backup there.
I'm hoping he does, at least.
Reverse psychology.
You don't think
that's too obvious, do you?
[takes a deep breath]
It's different than it used to be
on the force, Alfred.
These days you don't need
to work as hard to climb the ladder.
As long as your teeth are white
and your shirt is ironed,
that's enough for you to climb the ranks.
To be a murder investigator,
with no experience whatsoever.
I mean…
Like your little Thomas.
He climbed the ladder that way, didn't he?
If he's actually smarter
than everybody thinks,
and if he's really braver
than we believe him to be,
then I guess that…
He could… head into the line of fire.
Show who he really is.
For dear old dad.
-[enigmatic music plays]
-Hm.
Alfred!
Dad!
[Alfred] You've reached Alfred Berg.
Please leave a message.
You've reached Alfred Berg…
[quietly] Fuck. Fuck.
Alfred!
Alfred!
Dad!
[music fades out]
I get if you're
still upset with me, but, um…
[Charlotte]
We don't have to talk about that.
-I don't know if…
-Just focus on finding Alfred.
-Look…
-What are the police doing?
-Are you in touch with Natalie or Max?
-Um…
-What did they say?
-I'm not really sure how to tell you this.
What?
[shakily] Uh, Max went off on his own.
Yesterday we found him, and…
Thomas, what… Did something happen?
Max is dead, Charlotte.
He, uh…
-He went to see Johansson, and he…
-[sobbing] Wait, he's…
He went and tried bringing him in…
And now, uh…
-We lost Max.
-[Charlotte continues sobbing]
[melancholic music plays]
-[Charlotte] I don't know…
-So, uh…
I wish you wouldn't have had
to hear about it this way, but, uh…
He's gone.
Oh my God, Thomas.
-That's terrible.
-[sighs deeply]
You've got to get him, Thomas.
We're going to fucking get him.
-[music fades out]
-[Alma] He would come to the museum often.
-[Rebecca] After your husband died?
-[Alma] Yeah, a lot.
I was uncomfortable with it.
But, um… on his last visit,
I wasn't exactly friendly.
-Was he angry?
-Yeah, I imagine.
I suppose we were both still reeling
after what happened to my husband.
-[Rebecca] Thank you.
-[Alma] Yeah, of course.
I was talking to a woman in admissions
who told me he came in last night.
Apparently he left with an older man.
[keyboard clacking]
[John] Look, there's Johansson.
He walks through the foyer.
Then we move to another camera
that's above the exhibit.
He meets another man.
-[Rebecca] Wait. Pause.
-[John] Okay.
Alfred Berg.
-Motherfucker
-What?
-Is he behind it?
-[Natalie] No, not a chance.
[John] Uh… They're shaking hands,
they seem to know each other.
And then they leave the museum together.
[Natalie] Shit.
Alfred's gotta be the next target.
We believe our perpetrator
has taken a hostage.
Alfred Berg.
It's the most high-profile officer
he's taken so far.
Today is Friday.
And right now, it's already… 9:15.
-Natalie?
-Yeah.
[sighs]
Max found a place in the forest
close to Johansson's house in Hemfosa.
It's where he took the heads.
That detail hasn't
been leaked to the media.
And I'm pretty sure
this guy's not finished yet.
He'll want to complete his little
art project he set up in the woods.
Most likely he'll go
back to that location,
so we'll set up a team there
and they'll be prepared to act if he does.
-Okay?
-[cellphone chimes]
[Natalie] Good.
Thomas.
THOMAS BERG:
WE HAVE TO MEET UP
I think you have to tell him.
[tense music plays]
-[crickets chirping]
-[dog barking in distance]
[Peter] Soon it will be
the exact same time as that night
when Hugo was murdered.
1:15 a.m.
Listen.
You hear that?
Exactly the same sound
as the night Hugo was murdered.
Silence.
No sirens, nothing.
Total silence. It's bizarre, right?
Do you know the story
behind "Midwinter Sacrifice"?
Everybody surrounds the king,
who's ready to sacrifice himself
after years of the crops dying.
[tailgate opens]
[tailgate closes]
[reporter] Police have warned the public
to be on the lookout for Peter Johansson,
who is the primary suspect
in the 112 murders.
Johansson is said to be
extremely dangerous
and should not be approached if found.
Contact the authorities immediately
if you see this man.
He may be traveling with an older man.
[music fades out]
I heard a recording. Of my dad.
And I noticed this.
He left this behind.
It's identical to the ones
at the other crime scenes.
But I was too late.
Look here.
He's recreating elements of the painting.
The skulls in the trees and the bodies…
The only thing that's missing is the king.
It shows that king's about
to be sacrificed but is still alive.
That should give us hope.
And we still have time.
It's not 01:15 yet.
I'm sure that
Peter's keeping Alfred alive.
Fuck.
[Lucas] So this is where
the real police work happens?
[indistinct background chatter]
[sighs deeply]
Peter Johansson's problems
with the police force
are more serious than people are aware of.
His fellow officers accused him
of his partner's death.
He was obsessed with the question
of why backup never showed up that night.
He claimed he called
for reinforcements over the radio.
So you're saying Johansson's a liar?
The investigation proved
no backup call was made.
[Thomas] Hm.
If there was, it was logged.
-And especially on a call to dispatch.
-He filed multiple complaints.
-Every one of them was rejected.
-'Cause he never made the call?
[Thomas] Why are you telling us this?
[sighs]
Johansson said that incident
in Järfälla ruined his life.
He wouldn't stop. He wanted to know
who was in charge of dispatch that night.
Then he demanded to know
what happened to his calls.
[Thomas] You just said there weren't any.
-You made those calls disappear?
-[sighs]
[Thomas] Why?
[dark music plays]
What can I say?
It was one of those shifts.
You have to understand.
[stumbles]
My mind was in a hundred places at once.
[Thomas] And?
Branković was already dead.
Johansson was your scapegoat.
Well, honestly… He was dead in the water.
He didn't follow protocol.
It wasn't hard to focus our efforts
on that part of the investigation instead.
Do you know who was in charge
of dispatch with me that evening?
The name that was given
to Johansson from that night…
was Alfred Berg.
[Natalie] But ultimately,
he wasn't the one responsible.
This is what it's all about.
That night in Järfälla.
He wants revenge.
He's not going to Hemfosa.
-[Natalie] I'm coming with you.
-No. That's exactly what he wants.
[somber music with chanting vocals]
[music fades out]
[Alfred grunts, groans]
[Peter] It's in places like this
that police officers tend to die.
Places you'll never think about.
[Alfred straining, groaning]
-[grunts]
-[knife stabs]
[Alfred groaning]
-[Peter] Shh, shh, shh…
-[Alfred groaning]
[grunts]
[Peter] Now you'll know
what it's like to lose your partner.
[Alfred groans]
[metal clanging]
[Alfred groans]
[coughs]
Keep screaming for me.
Screaming's good.
Screaming means the police will come.
[wheezes, coughs]
[Peter] Scream for me.
Scream!
Let me hear you.
[Alfred grunts]
[straining] No!
[grunts]
-[panting]
-[woman] Hello?
Mister, are you okay?
-[Alfred coughs]
-[man] You all right?
[Alfred coughing]
Leave me here. Stay over there!
[groans]
-[man] I'm calling 112.
-No. Don't call the police either!
Don't…
[Alfred gasps]
[wearily] Don't call the police.
[phone ringing]
[indistinct emergency calls]
112. What's your emergency?
