Countdown (2025) s01e05 Episode Script
Blurred Edges
1
[grunts, groans]
[Oliveras] Oh. Look at that, Meachum.
What?
That's not mine.
And you wanna talk to me
about what is dangerous.
I can't help but think this is
a failure at the leadership level.
You have no idea what you're disrupting.
This man, Volchek, he told me
he was planning something patriotic.
But I didn't know what he's doing.
[suspenseful music plays]
[in Belarusian] Hello, wonderful.
[in English] Hmm. [chuckles]
Try it in English.
[in Belarusian] You say it first.
[in English] Hello, wonderful.
Hello, wonderful.
- [laughs]
- Hello.
- Hello.
- Hello, wonder…
- Hello.
- Hello.
[both chuckle]
- [in Belarusian] I wish you luck today.
- Hmm.
I have preparation
which is more valuable than luck.
Well, I can't say I wish you preparation.
[laughs, sighs]
If I land this partnership
we will write our own ticket from now on.
- We will live like Tsars of old.
- Hmm.
And if you don't?
Have you checked the weather in Siberia?
[both chuckle]
As you can see,
Belarus feeds most of Eastern Europe
and we at Blue Lion feed Belarus.
Our yield marks over 52%
of the entire country's exports.
We are the leader in potatoes,
in sugar beets,
in barley, in wheat, in rye, in corn.
For Poland, for Hungary,
for Slovenia, for Slovakia.
And we are looking to expand.
And how would this benefit our company?
We do not have the NFU.
[board members laugh]
Seriously.
As such, we'll produce a higher yield
at one-half the cost.
Blue Lion will keep production up
while realizing minimal overhead.
Excuse me. Can you go back a slide?
- Please.
- [clears throat]
Yeah, there it is.
So your overall output for potatoes
is 22,000 pounds per acre.
- Yes.
- Okay, well,
what Blue Lion lacks in technology
and modern farming techniques,
Casper Richert Danvers makes up
for with superior yield per acre.
We're currently achieving
over 40,000 pounds in potatoes
and 32 tons of sugar beets per acre.
Yes. But at what cost?
Competitive cost.
No, that's…
…with easier access to a greater
swath of the world for distribution.
Nonsense.
And we don't have any
uncomfortable ties with our government.
Gentleman, gentleman.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
I thank both our American friends
and our Belarusian friends
for coming here today
to make their presentations
and to answer our questions.
We will conduct due diligence
and will make our decision
with whom we will seek a partnership
by the end of the week.
[board members chattering]
[sighs] Sir.
[in Belarusian] Danill.
You look like you are organized well here.
Opportunity does not waste time on those
who are unprepared.
When Mikhail Durko's dance hall
burned to the ground,
nothing was recoverable from the scene.
However, the security camera data
was hosted off-site
by a company named Delphi Security.
We visited Delphi,
took possession of the footage
from the last twenty-one days
and destroyed it.
Okay. Good.
We also found the person
you're looking for.
I want you to discover who this man is
and where I can find him.
Yes, sir.
[in English] All right.
Here's what we know.
A Belarusian national named Volchek
was using the Reyes Nuevos cartel's
drug smuggling operation
to bring fissile material into the US
through the Port of Los Angeles.
We believe he's been operating
out of the Kryzhak Dance Hall in Burbank
owned by Mikhail Durko,
which was subsequently burned down
when we were drawing close.
Mikhail Durko is in custody,
his nephew Timur Novikov is dead.
So far, we've been
unable to identify Volchek.
I would like to do so today.
Since we have multiple oars in the water,
let's make sure we are all
pulling in the same direction.
- Shepherd?
- Yeah.
Deep diving the name Meachum saw
on the wall at the dance hall.
Gallagher. Running it
through NCIC, NGI, N-Dex.
And I'm on NICS and LEEP.
There's a lot of Gallaghers.
But we're getting through it, boss.
Great. Keep at it. Oliveras?
With Meachum, combing through the
ERT reports from Durko's wife's house,
his mistress's house,
and the remains of the dance hall.
Any fingerprints, any fibers
or any forensics
that can be actionable against Volchek.
Finau?
I reached out to LAPD,
as well as Burbank gang units
that specialize in Eastern European
criminal organizations.
Just gathering intel now.
I feel like the noose on this guy
is tightening.
Let's not lose our grip.
All right. Let's go.
[sighs]
[exhales deeply]
Uh, boss,
so I heard from a friend at Westwood…
apparently District Attorney Valwell
is setting a meeting with the ADIC.
Your name and the words
"head on a platter" were invoked.
Thank you.
For what it's worth,
I-I think you're doing a hell of a job.
Have you looked at the front door
fingerprints from Tatsiana's house?
There are about 40 unidentifiable.
Yeah, I'm on it.
I got a question for you
that you so conveniently
didn't answer earlier
that I think we need to discuss.
Javi Lopez's brick?
I'm just saying that it showed up again.
Some of it did.
So is that your answer?
That you just, uh, kept a little to
the side in case you might need it?
I do what I have to do
to get the information we need
to save innocent lives.
Well, that's bullshit.
The cartel doesn't play by a rule book.
Why the fuck should we?
So, yeah, you know what,
sometimes the lines,
they're gonna get a little blurry.
If you can't stomach that, that's fine.
- Are you using?
- So, tell me…
'Cause I'll ride or die
with blurred edges all day long,
but I need to know
exactly where that edge is.
We're routinely tested. You know that.
Fail once and that's it.
That doesn't answer my question.
[sighs]
Okay.
I'll say this.
You'll do a lot of shit
you never thought you would do
when there's a line of coke
on a table in front of you
and a gun pointed at your head.
What about you, huh? Los Angeles kid.
You saying you never used?
You never dabbled?
- This isn't about me.
- Well, I'm making it about you.
Well, for one, I'm not a LA kid.
Oh, no?
No, Victorville actually.
A desert rat.
And I did what every kid
from Victorville does.
I-I drove cars too fast on the 15.
I spray-painted
graffiti on the Rock-A-Hoola.
Talked shit to my parents.
And swore I'd leave the desert
and never come back.
'Cause you end up working at a Citgo or a…
a rubber factory and you never leave town.
So I turned 17.
Hadn't been to high school
in over a month,
because I didn't give a shit.
So when the school, Victor Valley,
came looking for me
they found my old man instead.
And when he caught up with my ass,
he gave me four choices.
Army, navy, air force or marines.
And I flipped a coin.
[Bell] Hey.
Company in Burbank, Delphi Security,
just reported two data service workers
murdered last night.
They hosted digital video capture
from the dance hall.
Wha… Why didn't we have that information?
I think the assumption
was the security camera data
was hosted on-site,
so it would've been destroyed in the fire.
To be continued.
Heather, set a meeting with
the Belarusian Consul General.
- Yes, sir.
- Why? Time to bring 'em in?
I'm gonna float the name Volchek
and see what reaction I get.
[in Belarusian] He is a top chef
but he yells at people on television…
- [both laugh]
- …and this has made him very famous.
Kira, I need a moment.
I'll meet you in the car.
[patrons chattering]
I understand you want to
speak with me, Mr. Vusovich?
Find out everything you can
about an American.
Matt Woodley.
Every man has a vice…
prostitutes, alcohol, drinking, pills,
bribes, gambling.
Whatever it is, whatever he's hiding…
I want to know it
before the sun goes down tomorrow.
Do you understand me?
Perfectly.
Find something.
[sighs]
Mr. Vus… Volchek.
I located the prisoner profile for the man
in the photo.
His name is Jack Walker…
he was posted on the same cell block
as Timur Novikov,
the nephew of Mikhail Durko,
for nine months.
Where is he now?
His prisoner profile says he bounced from
Palmdale Corrections to Central
to High Desert
following a rioting incident.
I attempted to backtrack the prisoner…
why would he be with the nephew
when he escaped?
Except I could find no records
of the court cases for Jack Walker.
This man…
…does not exist.
I saw him with my own eyes.
I mean he is no prisoner.
So who is he?
Come back to me with answers.
[manager, in English] We're still
freaking out, to be honest with you.
Rob and Mary were the kindest,
the hardest working people.
We're so sorry for your loss.
What did the thief take?
Nothing, as far as I can tell.
They did smash
one of our servers all to bits though.
And this server hosted video
from the dance hall?
Yeah.
Um, we keep the security video
for up to seven days
or till the system resets itself.
We could host longer, but most
of our clients say seven days.
A second ago you said "they".
Was there more than one perpetrator?
We got two different size boot prints
in the blood.
Think this was a two-person job.
- Okay. Thank you, guys.
- Thanks.
[sighs]
He's got an accomplice.
Maybe more than one.
We could be looking at a team here.
Yeah, I'll phone it in to Blythe.
We're looking for a box of needles now.
Hello, friend.
Special Agent in Charge, Nathan Blythe,
with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Iosif Astapov. I am the Consul General.
And my understanding is you
would like to talk to me perhaps.
I must apologize for you
driving all this way,
but I only have a minute to spare.
Oh. I was told
you had time in your schedule.
[speaks Belarusian]
Again, I apologize.
I'm afraid time is a luxury
I often find slipping through my fingers.
Well, then, I'll get right to it.
We're looking for a Belarusian citizen
who is a person of interest
in an active investigation.
Last name Volchek.
Volchek.
Volchek.
Hmm, no, no.
- I am unfamiliar with this name.
- You are?
I don't know it. But if you'll…
The investigation is into the death
of a federal officer.
Oy-oy-oy.
It is my wish I could help you.
But I cannot help
if I don't know this name.
Well, perhaps you can think harder.
V-O-L-C-H-E-K.
I do not know the name Volchek.
I am late for appointment.
If you would like
to speak further, Mr. Blythe,
I will ask you to make new appointment.
[Nathan] I mentioned the name Volchek
and he couldn't have hightailed it
out of there faster.
- Cold shoulder?
- Frigid.
He was planning for some event.
I guess he couldn't be bothered.
Bell, check with
Counterintelligence Division
in the LA field office.
See if we recruited any assets
with the Belarusian Consulate,
or if we're monitoring any lines.
Yeah, I can check NSA, NRO. CIA too.
Worth a shot.
[Nathan] Mmm.
Shepherd, how hard would it be to get
inside the consulate's computer system
and see if the name Volchek pops anywhere?
Yeah. I can poke it. See what kind
of swarm we're dealing with. You got it.
Sir, you mentioned an event.
My wife works for a caterer.
They cover a lot of big events in LA.
If they don't have the consulate job,
she'll know who does. I'll ask.
Perfect. Any information would be great.
[grunts]
Tim, how are you, buddy?
Yeah, it's great to hear your voice.
[laughs] Listen, I need a favor.
Uh, but I don't wanna ask you
over the phone.
[chattering]
Thank you, everyone.
If I could have your attention.
We have analyzed both proposals
- and we have a consens…
- [Matt] Mr. Clarke.
I apologize for the interruption.
But I'm gonna save you some time.
I am withdrawing Casper Richert Danvers'
bid for this partnership.
We have some issues
to take care of stateside.
And, uh, I apologize for
the late course correction,
but I believe it is in the best interests
of myself and my company that I do so.
[clears throat] Well,
in light of this news,
I must say we will waste no time
in extending our partnership offer
- to Blue Lion.
- [applauding]
Well done.
Bravo.
I don't know where you
got those photos or how,
but there is a price to be paid.
It won't just be paid by me.
All you Serbs and Belarusians
and Croatians
with your silk ties, your knockoff suits,
you're all the same.
You're just wannabe oligarchs
from shithole countries.
What, you think
you're gonna get your piece?
You're gonna get wealthy
from this personally?
Let me tell you something,
you don't know
what it looks like to play dirty.
You're about to find out.
So, the consulate, as can be expected,
is running
advanced cybersecurity platforms.
[Bell] Probably advised
and supplied by the Kremlin.
And every way we've tried
to start an attack,
malware, spoofing,
we've been rebuffed and shot down.
Yeah, the servers are impregnable
from the outside, so, we're blind.
What if we reach them from the inside?
The company with the catering contract
is Pascal's out of Culver City.
The event is 300 plus.
There's gonna be
a lot of bodies on-site tomorrow.
If we could get near
one of their hard drives,
I could install a rootkit.
I mean, we'd have to wait
until one of their staffers logs in
with a password, but then we'd be in.
All right. Talk to the owners of Pascal's,
see if we can get their logistics.
How many waiters, where the tables are,
where they're setting up,
inside, outside, all of it.
Okay.
What's this about?
We're trying to get inside one
of the Belarusian Consulate's servers
to see if they know the name Volchek.
I'm gonna take the stairs.
[breathing heavily, grunts]
[groans, inhales sharply]
[exhales deeply]
[suspenseful music plays]
All right, where the hell's Meachum?
You all right?
Yeah, I was just…
Left my phone at my desk.
Let's go.
How's it going?
FBI. Is there an owner
- or a manager we could talk to?
- For real?
Amy? There are some FBI agents here.
Well, close enough.
[clicks tongue] I figure
my badge is bigger than yours.
- Is that what you figured?
- Mmm.
Hello? Um, I'm Amy Moreno.
You're FBI?
Conducting a federal investigation,
yes, ma'am.
Well, you should know that
my son is a US Army officer.
And I am one proud, patriotic mama.
Whatever you need,
I'd be happy to provide.
- What's his MOS?
- [chuckles] 11 Bravo.
He's a staff sergeant
in the 82nd Airborne.
Oh, well, you know what they say,
God loves the infantry.
- [chuckles]
- And a paratrooper to boot and an NCO.
- Sounds like he was raised right.
- [sighs]
I myself was lucky enough to serve in
the Ranger Regiment in my younger days.
That's amazing.
[chuckles] Thank you for your service.
It was an honor to
have served our military.
Well, let me know
how I can be of assistance
and I'll help you anyway I can.
We understand you have
an event tomorrow night
at the Belarusian Consulate?
Yes, sir. Uh, follow me.
An honor. Wow.
Um…
This is the event grid.
Uh, we have about 300 plates coming.
- Is this the staff list?
- Yes, ma'am.
- Bussers, waiters, servers and support.
- It's a gold mine.
- Can we get a copy of that please?
- Of course.
Is this job safe? Should I be concerned?
No, it's perfectly fine.
We might just need additional help.
Name it.
[patrons chattering]
[Nathan] Tim Carmichael.
Nathan Blythe.
- How are you, pal?
- I'm good.
[chuckles] I was so delighted
when your name lit up my phone.
[Nathan] Yeah, it's great to see you.
- How's Elizabeth?
- Ah, ornery as ever.
She asked if you'd come with us
to Lanai this Fall.
Unless the Bureau's got your hands tied?
Well, somebody's got to
save the world for democracy.
- Well, you look well.
- Oh, I don't know about that, but, uh…
Thank you for taking the time
out of your busy day.
Anytime.
Truth is, I may need some help
in the saving the world
for democracy department.
Oh?
[Volchek chuckles]
- [in Belarusian] Cheers.
- [chuckles]
Mmm.
[Volchek sighs] As I said…
just like the Tsars of old.
[Kira speaks Belarusian]
One second.
Sir. I have disturbing news.
Say it.
I was alerted by a friend
in the Ministry of Finance…
they have discovered your embezzlements.
What are you talking about?
Who told you this?
I have a connection
with a senior official.
You took 100 million rubles.
I made that company!
It's pennies compared to
the profits the government has.
[sighs] My God.
When are they coming?
Tonight.
[sighs]
I've done everything for this country!
I know.
You better leave, sir. Leave Belarus, now.
[sighs]
[breathes heavily]
Yes. [inhales sharply]
Yes.
Thank you…
friend.
[sighs]
[sighs]
- Kira.
- Hmm?
We have to leave.
Now. Come on.
[speaks Belarusian]
[in English] No. No, no.
What I need, Doc, is-is… I need…
I need something stronger, okay?
That's what I'm trying to tell you.
'Cause the headaches are worse.
Yes. Yes. My vision, my bal…
I fucking blacked out on the stairs today.
No, I can't come in to see you,
because I-I-I…
There are literally lives at stake here.
Okay? Do you understand that?
So what I need from you,
is I need you to write me a goddamn
prescription for my fucking headaches.
That's what I need! Can you do that?
[line clicks, beeps]
[whispers] Fuck.
Fuck!
[pants]
[whispers] Fuck.
[exhales deeply]
[doorbell rings]
Oh. Jesus.
Why aren't you dressed?
I've been texting you.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Uh, just give me a minute.
[sighs]
["Trouble's Coming" playing]
[music continues]
- What's up?
- Hey.
Let's do this.
[music ends]
Hi there.
Tim and Tina Murphy.
[clicks tongue]
I'm sorry, what's the name again?
Uh, Tim Murphy.
Yeah, you're not on the list.
- That's odd.
- Uh, we are. We're on the list.
Why don't you just check it one more time?
It's M-U-R-P-H-Y.
[clears throat]
Okay, let's see.
Oh, here it is.
It was entered incorrectly.
[Mark] Okay.
Apologies for the delay. Enjoy the party.
- Okay. [grunts]
- Thank you.
[guests chattering]
[laughing]
You see what I'm talking about?
Great. There he is.
Come on.
That is beautiful.
That is beautiful. I love it.
What are you doing here, Agent Blythe?
We need to talk.
Now? Here?
In case you haven't noticed…
Either here or in private,
but it's gonna happen now.
If you'll excuse me, it seems like
a consul's time is never his own, huh?
Please. Please.
Agent Blythe, you know full well that
you're standing on consulate property,
which makes this
the sovereign territory of Belarus.
As a full-credentialed diplomat
to your country,
I have full immunity
and not subject to your orders.
This is quite a public party.
And I'm sure you wouldn't
want to be embarrassed
when this diplomatic incident plays out.
These things tend to make it
into the papers.
And you wouldn't want your masters
in Minsk questioning your judgment,
would you?
Maybe we go somewhere private
and talk quickly
about something in both our interests.
Come with me.
On the move.
They're heading up to the consul's office.
[Bell] Copy that.
Okay. Showtime.
[beeps]
[beeping]
Shit.
Boss, I need him
to do it again, but closer.
- Closer.
- Just a second.
You should know I went around
my own ADIC to bring you this proposal.
Proposal?
Yes. I need to know
you're not gonna screw me,
otherwise I turn around
and leave right now.
That depends on the proposal,
wouldn't you say?
[scanner beeps]
Come on.
We got it.
Shut the door.
[computer beeping]
Okay…
Please sit.
Astapov's in his office.
I counted four PCs in the bull pen
about 30 feet away.
[typing]
[beeps]
[sighs] Look at that.
- Get this to Oliveras fast.
- [Finau] You got it.
- Let's go.
- I see you are all alone over here.
Such lovely people.
And I said "Francine,
you must find out who they are
and make them feel welcome
right this instant."
I do hate coming to these things,
but I'm with the Dovhal Foundation.
We support charities
all throughout Eastern Europe.
Francine, it is such a pleasure
to meet you.
You know, we're actually interested
in donating to the, uh…
- Dovhal Foundation. Yes. Yes.
- The Dovhal Foundation, that's right.
And we're gonna come and find you,
we've just gotta take care
of a little something first.
We have to call our beautiful daughter
Frida before she goes to bed.
- [Francine] Oh.
- That's right.
Yeah, we, uh… we like to tuck her in
with a bedtime song.
And she hates it
when we don't sing to her.
She hates it.
Oh, here's our driver
with your phone right now, honey.
- [Finau] Here you go, ma'am.
- Thank you, Jerry, so much.
So we'll… we will be right back
with you, okay?
- Okay.
- Okay.
[sighs]
[sucks teeth]
- [beeps]
- [guard] Hey!
Oh, hey.
Hi, uh, we're just, uh,
looking for the bathroom.
Francine from the Dovhal Foundation,
she said that somewhere up here…
[grunts]
[beeps]
[sighs]
Oh, shit.
[grunting]
- [grunts]
- Yes! Come on.
[grunting]
[grunting]
[grunting]
What the US proposes,
is a substantial payment
if you hand over everything
you know about Volchek.
[scoffs]
I told you I don't…
The payment would be made
to you personally.
[grunting, groaning]
[grunts, groans]
[in Belarusian] Szolt? Kirill? Report.
[in English]
Your government can keep its money.
I appreciate how sensitive it was for you
to bring this directly to me, but…
as I told you before,
I don't know anyone named Volchek.
That's a shame.
Because I also know
you should have been ambassador to the US
instead of stuck here.
[clicks tongue] And I have friends in
Minsk who can whisper in the right ears,
maybe help your future prospects…
If you help me now.
[grunting, groaning]
[groans]
[grunts]
[guard] Szolt? Kirill?
[in Belarusian]
Where are you bastards? Report.
[grunting]
[grunts]
[grunting]
[whispers, in English] Come on.
[grunting]
[panting]
D-Do you know where the bathroom is?
- [grunts]
- [pants]
And I have a party to return to.
If you'll forgive me.
Well, I appreciate you taking the time.
And if you do come across that name,
the offer stands.
Thank you.
Please. Enjoy the party.
[mouthing words] Come on.
- [beeps]
- Got it.
["Trouble's Coming" playing]
[music continues]
[no audible dialogue]
[music ends]
Ah, Mr. Carmichael. To what do I owe the…
Special Agent Blythe.
- What's this ab…
- Grayson,
how's my favorite
LA District Attorney doing?
Uh, I'm doing great actually.
- I was gonna come…
- Good, good.
It's my understanding your name
is on the fast track
of a strong train to Sacramento.
Lot of people in Silicon Valley
are talking about it.
[chuckles] Well, I wouldn't say that…
Now, I don't like to get involved in
the day-to-day politics of my state.
That is not what I'm about.
Sure, I'm the party fundraising chairman
and I get my calls from my good friends
Adam and Nancy and Gavin,
but I say to them,
"Politics is your domain.
I'm just the ATM you need to withdraw from
every couple of years."
[chuckles]
Anyway, I thought you'd like to know
that Nathan Blythe here
is a close friend of mine.
I've known him most of my life.
And one thing I do know,
as surely as the sun comes up in the east,
is that Nathan Blythe is protecting
the citizens of this country.
- I'm sure he is. I was…
- So what I would like to propose
is that you leave Nathan Blythe alone
to do his job as he sees fit.
Stay out of his way.
What was it, uh, Teddy Roosevelt said?
"Have sense enough to pick good people
to do what needs to get done,
but self-restraint enough not to meddle
with them while they do it."
Show some self-restraint.
And then your train can keep rolling
right on down those tracks.
Yes.
Of course, I agree with you.
I was only trying to offer my support
to assist him anyway I can.
[sighs] Good.
- I am sure glad to hear that. [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
Good?
Good.
Grayson, always a pleasure.
You too.
All right, catch me up.
Well, uh, Bell and I have been working
to sort through the files
from the Belarus Consulate server.
We had to wait for a secretary
to arrive and fire up her computer…
But we have full access now.
[Shepherd] And you're gonna be happy.
We found an encrypted file
titled "Volchek."
Which Shepherd immediately hacked.
[Shepherd] And it contained
the following dossier.
The name Volchek is an alias for this man.
Borys Vusovich.
Born in Minsk 1979.
An alias?
Yeah, he was an ordinance expert
in the BGF army.
- That's explosives.
- [Shepherd] Uh-huh.
Fought in Chechnya. Discharged in '06.
He then found work as a middle manager
in the defense ministry until '08,
when his brother died by suicide.
In '09, he went
into the food service industry,
where he became wealthy, as agriculture
was one of Belarus's biggest exports.
Yeah, but maybe a little too wealthy.
He married Kira Budny in 2018.
Was a beauty queen,
ten years his junior, no kids.
In 2019, he was sought after
for embezzlement.
Apparently it was a US businessman
named Matt Woodley
who was working with the Belarusian
government to expose his corruption.
And a warrant was issued
for Vusovich's arrest.
[in Belarusian]
I have one thing to take care of.
I'm scared.
Everything will be okay.
I'll meet you on the plane.
[engine starts]
[in English] The Militsiya in Minsk
discovered a plan of Volchek
trying to flee the country
by private plane.
[tires screech]
[in Belarusian] So, everyone's here?
No, my husband is not here yet.
You aren't Mr. Vusovich?
I was told to wait here for Mr. Vusovich.
[sirens wailing]
[in English] But the jet that
Borys Vusovich and his wife were on
suddenly exploded
as the police were closing in.
Now, a officer testified
that he saw both of them onboard
before the plane caught fire.
But who knows.
[Bell] The Belarusian government believes
that Vusovich staged the incident
and he has shown up inside
the United States using the alias Volchek.
So this guy embezzles a fuck-ton of money,
he's a demolitions expert,
clearly knows how to make a bomb,
and he has the resources
to fake his own death?
And killed his wife in the process
to help sell it?
That is exactly what we're saying, yeah.
Well, whatever he is, whoever he is,
we're close to him.
I can feel it.
He's somewhere nearby.
Sir, you have an 11:00 a.m. briefing
at Westwood.
Right. This is good work. Let's find him.
[Mark] Yeah, agreed. Nice work, you guys.
Thanks, man. Well, you know, we wouldn't
have had any of that information
if you hadn't kicked some ass
in there so, thank you.
Team effort.
That does get me thinking though,
if somebody does a deep dive on us,
that could backtrack
to our actual profiles.
[in Belarusian] Anything?
[in English]
I handled that the first week I was here.
["The Couch Incident" playing]
Good.
That's, uh… That's good.
I accept all major credit cards.
Or Venmo if that's easier for you.
- Ah.
- [chuckles]
You wanna see yours?
She's cute.
Show them Finau.
Wait. That's me?
Well, yeah, a version of you.
- He's white.
- [chuckles]
[in Belarusian] Continue as planned.
[music continues]
[music ends]
[in English] I'm sure you'll find
everything's in order in the contract.
When could I expect delivery?
[in Belarusian] Vusovich?
Or should I call you "Volchek?"
[in English]
The Americans are closing in on you.
[in Belarusian] He will not spoil my plans
to bring this country to its knees!
[Shepherd, in English]
We have been drilling down on the name
that Meachum saw on the map
in the basement of the dance hall.
We were able to find this man,
Shawn Killian Gallagher.
- How about an LKA?
- House in Highland Park.
[Mark] Police, open up.
Well, look at that.
[grunts, groans]
[Oliveras] Oh. Look at that, Meachum.
What?
That's not mine.
And you wanna talk to me
about what is dangerous.
I can't help but think this is
a failure at the leadership level.
You have no idea what you're disrupting.
This man, Volchek, he told me
he was planning something patriotic.
But I didn't know what he's doing.
[suspenseful music plays]
[in Belarusian] Hello, wonderful.
[in English] Hmm. [chuckles]
Try it in English.
[in Belarusian] You say it first.
[in English] Hello, wonderful.
Hello, wonderful.
- [laughs]
- Hello.
- Hello.
- Hello, wonder…
- Hello.
- Hello.
[both chuckle]
- [in Belarusian] I wish you luck today.
- Hmm.
I have preparation
which is more valuable than luck.
Well, I can't say I wish you preparation.
[laughs, sighs]
If I land this partnership
we will write our own ticket from now on.
- We will live like Tsars of old.
- Hmm.
And if you don't?
Have you checked the weather in Siberia?
[both chuckle]
As you can see,
Belarus feeds most of Eastern Europe
and we at Blue Lion feed Belarus.
Our yield marks over 52%
of the entire country's exports.
We are the leader in potatoes,
in sugar beets,
in barley, in wheat, in rye, in corn.
For Poland, for Hungary,
for Slovenia, for Slovakia.
And we are looking to expand.
And how would this benefit our company?
We do not have the NFU.
[board members laugh]
Seriously.
As such, we'll produce a higher yield
at one-half the cost.
Blue Lion will keep production up
while realizing minimal overhead.
Excuse me. Can you go back a slide?
- Please.
- [clears throat]
Yeah, there it is.
So your overall output for potatoes
is 22,000 pounds per acre.
- Yes.
- Okay, well,
what Blue Lion lacks in technology
and modern farming techniques,
Casper Richert Danvers makes up
for with superior yield per acre.
We're currently achieving
over 40,000 pounds in potatoes
and 32 tons of sugar beets per acre.
Yes. But at what cost?
Competitive cost.
No, that's…
…with easier access to a greater
swath of the world for distribution.
Nonsense.
And we don't have any
uncomfortable ties with our government.
Gentleman, gentleman.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
I thank both our American friends
and our Belarusian friends
for coming here today
to make their presentations
and to answer our questions.
We will conduct due diligence
and will make our decision
with whom we will seek a partnership
by the end of the week.
[board members chattering]
[sighs] Sir.
[in Belarusian] Danill.
You look like you are organized well here.
Opportunity does not waste time on those
who are unprepared.
When Mikhail Durko's dance hall
burned to the ground,
nothing was recoverable from the scene.
However, the security camera data
was hosted off-site
by a company named Delphi Security.
We visited Delphi,
took possession of the footage
from the last twenty-one days
and destroyed it.
Okay. Good.
We also found the person
you're looking for.
I want you to discover who this man is
and where I can find him.
Yes, sir.
[in English] All right.
Here's what we know.
A Belarusian national named Volchek
was using the Reyes Nuevos cartel's
drug smuggling operation
to bring fissile material into the US
through the Port of Los Angeles.
We believe he's been operating
out of the Kryzhak Dance Hall in Burbank
owned by Mikhail Durko,
which was subsequently burned down
when we were drawing close.
Mikhail Durko is in custody,
his nephew Timur Novikov is dead.
So far, we've been
unable to identify Volchek.
I would like to do so today.
Since we have multiple oars in the water,
let's make sure we are all
pulling in the same direction.
- Shepherd?
- Yeah.
Deep diving the name Meachum saw
on the wall at the dance hall.
Gallagher. Running it
through NCIC, NGI, N-Dex.
And I'm on NICS and LEEP.
There's a lot of Gallaghers.
But we're getting through it, boss.
Great. Keep at it. Oliveras?
With Meachum, combing through the
ERT reports from Durko's wife's house,
his mistress's house,
and the remains of the dance hall.
Any fingerprints, any fibers
or any forensics
that can be actionable against Volchek.
Finau?
I reached out to LAPD,
as well as Burbank gang units
that specialize in Eastern European
criminal organizations.
Just gathering intel now.
I feel like the noose on this guy
is tightening.
Let's not lose our grip.
All right. Let's go.
[sighs]
[exhales deeply]
Uh, boss,
so I heard from a friend at Westwood…
apparently District Attorney Valwell
is setting a meeting with the ADIC.
Your name and the words
"head on a platter" were invoked.
Thank you.
For what it's worth,
I-I think you're doing a hell of a job.
Have you looked at the front door
fingerprints from Tatsiana's house?
There are about 40 unidentifiable.
Yeah, I'm on it.
I got a question for you
that you so conveniently
didn't answer earlier
that I think we need to discuss.
Javi Lopez's brick?
I'm just saying that it showed up again.
Some of it did.
So is that your answer?
That you just, uh, kept a little to
the side in case you might need it?
I do what I have to do
to get the information we need
to save innocent lives.
Well, that's bullshit.
The cartel doesn't play by a rule book.
Why the fuck should we?
So, yeah, you know what,
sometimes the lines,
they're gonna get a little blurry.
If you can't stomach that, that's fine.
- Are you using?
- So, tell me…
'Cause I'll ride or die
with blurred edges all day long,
but I need to know
exactly where that edge is.
We're routinely tested. You know that.
Fail once and that's it.
That doesn't answer my question.
[sighs]
Okay.
I'll say this.
You'll do a lot of shit
you never thought you would do
when there's a line of coke
on a table in front of you
and a gun pointed at your head.
What about you, huh? Los Angeles kid.
You saying you never used?
You never dabbled?
- This isn't about me.
- Well, I'm making it about you.
Well, for one, I'm not a LA kid.
Oh, no?
No, Victorville actually.
A desert rat.
And I did what every kid
from Victorville does.
I-I drove cars too fast on the 15.
I spray-painted
graffiti on the Rock-A-Hoola.
Talked shit to my parents.
And swore I'd leave the desert
and never come back.
'Cause you end up working at a Citgo or a…
a rubber factory and you never leave town.
So I turned 17.
Hadn't been to high school
in over a month,
because I didn't give a shit.
So when the school, Victor Valley,
came looking for me
they found my old man instead.
And when he caught up with my ass,
he gave me four choices.
Army, navy, air force or marines.
And I flipped a coin.
[Bell] Hey.
Company in Burbank, Delphi Security,
just reported two data service workers
murdered last night.
They hosted digital video capture
from the dance hall.
Wha… Why didn't we have that information?
I think the assumption
was the security camera data
was hosted on-site,
so it would've been destroyed in the fire.
To be continued.
Heather, set a meeting with
the Belarusian Consul General.
- Yes, sir.
- Why? Time to bring 'em in?
I'm gonna float the name Volchek
and see what reaction I get.
[in Belarusian] He is a top chef
but he yells at people on television…
- [both laugh]
- …and this has made him very famous.
Kira, I need a moment.
I'll meet you in the car.
[patrons chattering]
I understand you want to
speak with me, Mr. Vusovich?
Find out everything you can
about an American.
Matt Woodley.
Every man has a vice…
prostitutes, alcohol, drinking, pills,
bribes, gambling.
Whatever it is, whatever he's hiding…
I want to know it
before the sun goes down tomorrow.
Do you understand me?
Perfectly.
Find something.
[sighs]
Mr. Vus… Volchek.
I located the prisoner profile for the man
in the photo.
His name is Jack Walker…
he was posted on the same cell block
as Timur Novikov,
the nephew of Mikhail Durko,
for nine months.
Where is he now?
His prisoner profile says he bounced from
Palmdale Corrections to Central
to High Desert
following a rioting incident.
I attempted to backtrack the prisoner…
why would he be with the nephew
when he escaped?
Except I could find no records
of the court cases for Jack Walker.
This man…
…does not exist.
I saw him with my own eyes.
I mean he is no prisoner.
So who is he?
Come back to me with answers.
[manager, in English] We're still
freaking out, to be honest with you.
Rob and Mary were the kindest,
the hardest working people.
We're so sorry for your loss.
What did the thief take?
Nothing, as far as I can tell.
They did smash
one of our servers all to bits though.
And this server hosted video
from the dance hall?
Yeah.
Um, we keep the security video
for up to seven days
or till the system resets itself.
We could host longer, but most
of our clients say seven days.
A second ago you said "they".
Was there more than one perpetrator?
We got two different size boot prints
in the blood.
Think this was a two-person job.
- Okay. Thank you, guys.
- Thanks.
[sighs]
He's got an accomplice.
Maybe more than one.
We could be looking at a team here.
Yeah, I'll phone it in to Blythe.
We're looking for a box of needles now.
Hello, friend.
Special Agent in Charge, Nathan Blythe,
with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Iosif Astapov. I am the Consul General.
And my understanding is you
would like to talk to me perhaps.
I must apologize for you
driving all this way,
but I only have a minute to spare.
Oh. I was told
you had time in your schedule.
[speaks Belarusian]
Again, I apologize.
I'm afraid time is a luxury
I often find slipping through my fingers.
Well, then, I'll get right to it.
We're looking for a Belarusian citizen
who is a person of interest
in an active investigation.
Last name Volchek.
Volchek.
Volchek.
Hmm, no, no.
- I am unfamiliar with this name.
- You are?
I don't know it. But if you'll…
The investigation is into the death
of a federal officer.
Oy-oy-oy.
It is my wish I could help you.
But I cannot help
if I don't know this name.
Well, perhaps you can think harder.
V-O-L-C-H-E-K.
I do not know the name Volchek.
I am late for appointment.
If you would like
to speak further, Mr. Blythe,
I will ask you to make new appointment.
[Nathan] I mentioned the name Volchek
and he couldn't have hightailed it
out of there faster.
- Cold shoulder?
- Frigid.
He was planning for some event.
I guess he couldn't be bothered.
Bell, check with
Counterintelligence Division
in the LA field office.
See if we recruited any assets
with the Belarusian Consulate,
or if we're monitoring any lines.
Yeah, I can check NSA, NRO. CIA too.
Worth a shot.
[Nathan] Mmm.
Shepherd, how hard would it be to get
inside the consulate's computer system
and see if the name Volchek pops anywhere?
Yeah. I can poke it. See what kind
of swarm we're dealing with. You got it.
Sir, you mentioned an event.
My wife works for a caterer.
They cover a lot of big events in LA.
If they don't have the consulate job,
she'll know who does. I'll ask.
Perfect. Any information would be great.
[grunts]
Tim, how are you, buddy?
Yeah, it's great to hear your voice.
[laughs] Listen, I need a favor.
Uh, but I don't wanna ask you
over the phone.
[chattering]
Thank you, everyone.
If I could have your attention.
We have analyzed both proposals
- and we have a consens…
- [Matt] Mr. Clarke.
I apologize for the interruption.
But I'm gonna save you some time.
I am withdrawing Casper Richert Danvers'
bid for this partnership.
We have some issues
to take care of stateside.
And, uh, I apologize for
the late course correction,
but I believe it is in the best interests
of myself and my company that I do so.
[clears throat] Well,
in light of this news,
I must say we will waste no time
in extending our partnership offer
- to Blue Lion.
- [applauding]
Well done.
Bravo.
I don't know where you
got those photos or how,
but there is a price to be paid.
It won't just be paid by me.
All you Serbs and Belarusians
and Croatians
with your silk ties, your knockoff suits,
you're all the same.
You're just wannabe oligarchs
from shithole countries.
What, you think
you're gonna get your piece?
You're gonna get wealthy
from this personally?
Let me tell you something,
you don't know
what it looks like to play dirty.
You're about to find out.
So, the consulate, as can be expected,
is running
advanced cybersecurity platforms.
[Bell] Probably advised
and supplied by the Kremlin.
And every way we've tried
to start an attack,
malware, spoofing,
we've been rebuffed and shot down.
Yeah, the servers are impregnable
from the outside, so, we're blind.
What if we reach them from the inside?
The company with the catering contract
is Pascal's out of Culver City.
The event is 300 plus.
There's gonna be
a lot of bodies on-site tomorrow.
If we could get near
one of their hard drives,
I could install a rootkit.
I mean, we'd have to wait
until one of their staffers logs in
with a password, but then we'd be in.
All right. Talk to the owners of Pascal's,
see if we can get their logistics.
How many waiters, where the tables are,
where they're setting up,
inside, outside, all of it.
Okay.
What's this about?
We're trying to get inside one
of the Belarusian Consulate's servers
to see if they know the name Volchek.
I'm gonna take the stairs.
[breathing heavily, grunts]
[groans, inhales sharply]
[exhales deeply]
[suspenseful music plays]
All right, where the hell's Meachum?
You all right?
Yeah, I was just…
Left my phone at my desk.
Let's go.
How's it going?
FBI. Is there an owner
- or a manager we could talk to?
- For real?
Amy? There are some FBI agents here.
Well, close enough.
[clicks tongue] I figure
my badge is bigger than yours.
- Is that what you figured?
- Mmm.
Hello? Um, I'm Amy Moreno.
You're FBI?
Conducting a federal investigation,
yes, ma'am.
Well, you should know that
my son is a US Army officer.
And I am one proud, patriotic mama.
Whatever you need,
I'd be happy to provide.
- What's his MOS?
- [chuckles] 11 Bravo.
He's a staff sergeant
in the 82nd Airborne.
Oh, well, you know what they say,
God loves the infantry.
- [chuckles]
- And a paratrooper to boot and an NCO.
- Sounds like he was raised right.
- [sighs]
I myself was lucky enough to serve in
the Ranger Regiment in my younger days.
That's amazing.
[chuckles] Thank you for your service.
It was an honor to
have served our military.
Well, let me know
how I can be of assistance
and I'll help you anyway I can.
We understand you have
an event tomorrow night
at the Belarusian Consulate?
Yes, sir. Uh, follow me.
An honor. Wow.
Um…
This is the event grid.
Uh, we have about 300 plates coming.
- Is this the staff list?
- Yes, ma'am.
- Bussers, waiters, servers and support.
- It's a gold mine.
- Can we get a copy of that please?
- Of course.
Is this job safe? Should I be concerned?
No, it's perfectly fine.
We might just need additional help.
Name it.
[patrons chattering]
[Nathan] Tim Carmichael.
Nathan Blythe.
- How are you, pal?
- I'm good.
[chuckles] I was so delighted
when your name lit up my phone.
[Nathan] Yeah, it's great to see you.
- How's Elizabeth?
- Ah, ornery as ever.
She asked if you'd come with us
to Lanai this Fall.
Unless the Bureau's got your hands tied?
Well, somebody's got to
save the world for democracy.
- Well, you look well.
- Oh, I don't know about that, but, uh…
Thank you for taking the time
out of your busy day.
Anytime.
Truth is, I may need some help
in the saving the world
for democracy department.
Oh?
[Volchek chuckles]
- [in Belarusian] Cheers.
- [chuckles]
Mmm.
[Volchek sighs] As I said…
just like the Tsars of old.
[Kira speaks Belarusian]
One second.
Sir. I have disturbing news.
Say it.
I was alerted by a friend
in the Ministry of Finance…
they have discovered your embezzlements.
What are you talking about?
Who told you this?
I have a connection
with a senior official.
You took 100 million rubles.
I made that company!
It's pennies compared to
the profits the government has.
[sighs] My God.
When are they coming?
Tonight.
[sighs]
I've done everything for this country!
I know.
You better leave, sir. Leave Belarus, now.
[sighs]
[breathes heavily]
Yes. [inhales sharply]
Yes.
Thank you…
friend.
[sighs]
[sighs]
- Kira.
- Hmm?
We have to leave.
Now. Come on.
[speaks Belarusian]
[in English] No. No, no.
What I need, Doc, is-is… I need…
I need something stronger, okay?
That's what I'm trying to tell you.
'Cause the headaches are worse.
Yes. Yes. My vision, my bal…
I fucking blacked out on the stairs today.
No, I can't come in to see you,
because I-I-I…
There are literally lives at stake here.
Okay? Do you understand that?
So what I need from you,
is I need you to write me a goddamn
prescription for my fucking headaches.
That's what I need! Can you do that?
[line clicks, beeps]
[whispers] Fuck.
Fuck!
[pants]
[whispers] Fuck.
[exhales deeply]
[doorbell rings]
Oh. Jesus.
Why aren't you dressed?
I've been texting you.
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Uh, just give me a minute.
[sighs]
["Trouble's Coming" playing]
[music continues]
- What's up?
- Hey.
Let's do this.
[music ends]
Hi there.
Tim and Tina Murphy.
[clicks tongue]
I'm sorry, what's the name again?
Uh, Tim Murphy.
Yeah, you're not on the list.
- That's odd.
- Uh, we are. We're on the list.
Why don't you just check it one more time?
It's M-U-R-P-H-Y.
[clears throat]
Okay, let's see.
Oh, here it is.
It was entered incorrectly.
[Mark] Okay.
Apologies for the delay. Enjoy the party.
- Okay. [grunts]
- Thank you.
[guests chattering]
[laughing]
You see what I'm talking about?
Great. There he is.
Come on.
That is beautiful.
That is beautiful. I love it.
What are you doing here, Agent Blythe?
We need to talk.
Now? Here?
In case you haven't noticed…
Either here or in private,
but it's gonna happen now.
If you'll excuse me, it seems like
a consul's time is never his own, huh?
Please. Please.
Agent Blythe, you know full well that
you're standing on consulate property,
which makes this
the sovereign territory of Belarus.
As a full-credentialed diplomat
to your country,
I have full immunity
and not subject to your orders.
This is quite a public party.
And I'm sure you wouldn't
want to be embarrassed
when this diplomatic incident plays out.
These things tend to make it
into the papers.
And you wouldn't want your masters
in Minsk questioning your judgment,
would you?
Maybe we go somewhere private
and talk quickly
about something in both our interests.
Come with me.
On the move.
They're heading up to the consul's office.
[Bell] Copy that.
Okay. Showtime.
[beeps]
[beeping]
Shit.
Boss, I need him
to do it again, but closer.
- Closer.
- Just a second.
You should know I went around
my own ADIC to bring you this proposal.
Proposal?
Yes. I need to know
you're not gonna screw me,
otherwise I turn around
and leave right now.
That depends on the proposal,
wouldn't you say?
[scanner beeps]
Come on.
We got it.
Shut the door.
[computer beeping]
Okay…
Please sit.
Astapov's in his office.
I counted four PCs in the bull pen
about 30 feet away.
[typing]
[beeps]
[sighs] Look at that.
- Get this to Oliveras fast.
- [Finau] You got it.
- Let's go.
- I see you are all alone over here.
Such lovely people.
And I said "Francine,
you must find out who they are
and make them feel welcome
right this instant."
I do hate coming to these things,
but I'm with the Dovhal Foundation.
We support charities
all throughout Eastern Europe.
Francine, it is such a pleasure
to meet you.
You know, we're actually interested
in donating to the, uh…
- Dovhal Foundation. Yes. Yes.
- The Dovhal Foundation, that's right.
And we're gonna come and find you,
we've just gotta take care
of a little something first.
We have to call our beautiful daughter
Frida before she goes to bed.
- [Francine] Oh.
- That's right.
Yeah, we, uh… we like to tuck her in
with a bedtime song.
And she hates it
when we don't sing to her.
She hates it.
Oh, here's our driver
with your phone right now, honey.
- [Finau] Here you go, ma'am.
- Thank you, Jerry, so much.
So we'll… we will be right back
with you, okay?
- Okay.
- Okay.
[sighs]
[sucks teeth]
- [beeps]
- [guard] Hey!
Oh, hey.
Hi, uh, we're just, uh,
looking for the bathroom.
Francine from the Dovhal Foundation,
she said that somewhere up here…
[grunts]
[beeps]
[sighs]
Oh, shit.
[grunting]
- [grunts]
- Yes! Come on.
[grunting]
[grunting]
[grunting]
What the US proposes,
is a substantial payment
if you hand over everything
you know about Volchek.
[scoffs]
I told you I don't…
The payment would be made
to you personally.
[grunting, groaning]
[grunts, groans]
[in Belarusian] Szolt? Kirill? Report.
[in English]
Your government can keep its money.
I appreciate how sensitive it was for you
to bring this directly to me, but…
as I told you before,
I don't know anyone named Volchek.
That's a shame.
Because I also know
you should have been ambassador to the US
instead of stuck here.
[clicks tongue] And I have friends in
Minsk who can whisper in the right ears,
maybe help your future prospects…
If you help me now.
[grunting, groaning]
[groans]
[grunts]
[guard] Szolt? Kirill?
[in Belarusian]
Where are you bastards? Report.
[grunting]
[grunts]
[grunting]
[whispers, in English] Come on.
[grunting]
[panting]
D-Do you know where the bathroom is?
- [grunts]
- [pants]
And I have a party to return to.
If you'll forgive me.
Well, I appreciate you taking the time.
And if you do come across that name,
the offer stands.
Thank you.
Please. Enjoy the party.
[mouthing words] Come on.
- [beeps]
- Got it.
["Trouble's Coming" playing]
[music continues]
[no audible dialogue]
[music ends]
Ah, Mr. Carmichael. To what do I owe the…
Special Agent Blythe.
- What's this ab…
- Grayson,
how's my favorite
LA District Attorney doing?
Uh, I'm doing great actually.
- I was gonna come…
- Good, good.
It's my understanding your name
is on the fast track
of a strong train to Sacramento.
Lot of people in Silicon Valley
are talking about it.
[chuckles] Well, I wouldn't say that…
Now, I don't like to get involved in
the day-to-day politics of my state.
That is not what I'm about.
Sure, I'm the party fundraising chairman
and I get my calls from my good friends
Adam and Nancy and Gavin,
but I say to them,
"Politics is your domain.
I'm just the ATM you need to withdraw from
every couple of years."
[chuckles]
Anyway, I thought you'd like to know
that Nathan Blythe here
is a close friend of mine.
I've known him most of my life.
And one thing I do know,
as surely as the sun comes up in the east,
is that Nathan Blythe is protecting
the citizens of this country.
- I'm sure he is. I was…
- So what I would like to propose
is that you leave Nathan Blythe alone
to do his job as he sees fit.
Stay out of his way.
What was it, uh, Teddy Roosevelt said?
"Have sense enough to pick good people
to do what needs to get done,
but self-restraint enough not to meddle
with them while they do it."
Show some self-restraint.
And then your train can keep rolling
right on down those tracks.
Yes.
Of course, I agree with you.
I was only trying to offer my support
to assist him anyway I can.
[sighs] Good.
- I am sure glad to hear that. [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
Good?
Good.
Grayson, always a pleasure.
You too.
All right, catch me up.
Well, uh, Bell and I have been working
to sort through the files
from the Belarus Consulate server.
We had to wait for a secretary
to arrive and fire up her computer…
But we have full access now.
[Shepherd] And you're gonna be happy.
We found an encrypted file
titled "Volchek."
Which Shepherd immediately hacked.
[Shepherd] And it contained
the following dossier.
The name Volchek is an alias for this man.
Borys Vusovich.
Born in Minsk 1979.
An alias?
Yeah, he was an ordinance expert
in the BGF army.
- That's explosives.
- [Shepherd] Uh-huh.
Fought in Chechnya. Discharged in '06.
He then found work as a middle manager
in the defense ministry until '08,
when his brother died by suicide.
In '09, he went
into the food service industry,
where he became wealthy, as agriculture
was one of Belarus's biggest exports.
Yeah, but maybe a little too wealthy.
He married Kira Budny in 2018.
Was a beauty queen,
ten years his junior, no kids.
In 2019, he was sought after
for embezzlement.
Apparently it was a US businessman
named Matt Woodley
who was working with the Belarusian
government to expose his corruption.
And a warrant was issued
for Vusovich's arrest.
[in Belarusian]
I have one thing to take care of.
I'm scared.
Everything will be okay.
I'll meet you on the plane.
[engine starts]
[in English] The Militsiya in Minsk
discovered a plan of Volchek
trying to flee the country
by private plane.
[tires screech]
[in Belarusian] So, everyone's here?
No, my husband is not here yet.
You aren't Mr. Vusovich?
I was told to wait here for Mr. Vusovich.
[sirens wailing]
[in English] But the jet that
Borys Vusovich and his wife were on
suddenly exploded
as the police were closing in.
Now, a officer testified
that he saw both of them onboard
before the plane caught fire.
But who knows.
[Bell] The Belarusian government believes
that Vusovich staged the incident
and he has shown up inside
the United States using the alias Volchek.
So this guy embezzles a fuck-ton of money,
he's a demolitions expert,
clearly knows how to make a bomb,
and he has the resources
to fake his own death?
And killed his wife in the process
to help sell it?
That is exactly what we're saying, yeah.
Well, whatever he is, whoever he is,
we're close to him.
I can feel it.
He's somewhere nearby.
Sir, you have an 11:00 a.m. briefing
at Westwood.
Right. This is good work. Let's find him.
[Mark] Yeah, agreed. Nice work, you guys.
Thanks, man. Well, you know, we wouldn't
have had any of that information
if you hadn't kicked some ass
in there so, thank you.
Team effort.
That does get me thinking though,
if somebody does a deep dive on us,
that could backtrack
to our actual profiles.
[in Belarusian] Anything?
[in English]
I handled that the first week I was here.
["The Couch Incident" playing]
Good.
That's, uh… That's good.
I accept all major credit cards.
Or Venmo if that's easier for you.
- Ah.
- [chuckles]
You wanna see yours?
She's cute.
Show them Finau.
Wait. That's me?
Well, yeah, a version of you.
- He's white.
- [chuckles]
[in Belarusian] Continue as planned.
[music continues]
[music ends]
[in English] I'm sure you'll find
everything's in order in the contract.
When could I expect delivery?
[in Belarusian] Vusovich?
Or should I call you "Volchek?"
[in English]
The Americans are closing in on you.
[in Belarusian] He will not spoil my plans
to bring this country to its knees!
[Shepherd, in English]
We have been drilling down on the name
that Meachum saw on the map
in the basement of the dance hall.
We were able to find this man,
Shawn Killian Gallagher.
- How about an LKA?
- House in Highland Park.
[Mark] Police, open up.
Well, look at that.
