The Garden: Commune or Cult (2023) s01e05 Episode Script

The Garden Fractures

[Julia] Six or seven people
that reached out online
that wanna come help us
with this new land project.
They need all the help
that they can get
to build another commune.
[Patrick] Someone could come
and visit for 10 days.
Then after 10 days,
they could propose
to stay longer.
As a prepper, sign me up.
[Tisheila] The primary reason
that I'm going to The Garden,
-I am preparing for society
going down.
-[gun fires]
I envision having
my own community.
My girlfriend, my boyfriend.
[Jessica] This is
my eyelash bag.
I should probably stay
more minimal for The Garden
because it's less upkeep.
I called this council,
Narayah, because
I'm asking you to leave.
You've got to go.
We just had seven tornadoes
at the same time.
And we should, like, focus
on building a root cellar,
like, ASAP.
I don't know about bringing
more equipment on the land.
[Tyler] One person is
all it takes to say no.
And then we all got
to abide by those rules.
It's so frustrating.
My version of this community
is my wife and I are
in charge.
[Tree] You said a community
where you and your wife
are the leaders.
That's a cult.
Yeah.
[birds chirping]
[interviewer]
From the communities
that you have been visiting,
what do you see
as the most common issues
they are running into?
Hundreds, if not thousands
of intentional communities
fail.
People living
in close proximity will
end up creating
there will be tension.
It's It implodes.
Intentional communities work
if the people that are trying
to make it work
are doing it
in an altruistic way
and not in a selfish way.
You have to mean it.
You can't fake it.
You can't be like,
"Let's all live together
and share, but this is mine."
[interviewer] What kind
of obstacles have y'all
had to overcome
or that you didn't expect
that stood in the way
of the vision that's finding
its way to fruition out here?
There's like some,
like, really deep
psychological stuff
that we have to, like,
break through.
[woman 1] We're open
to anybody at any time.
[man 1] It's not a safe place.
[man 2] We're here creating
something new.
We're gonna burn it.
[man 3] If I don't conform,
I am outcasted.
[woman 2] There's a reason
they're off the grid.
[woman 3] For the love
of all humanity.
[woman 4] The Garden
is a cult.
You are putting us all
in danger.
Stop filming.
[woman 5] We're going
to tell our true story.
[birds chirping]
Coming to a land like this,
learning skills from people
like you is invaluable
because you can teach
your children, you can teach
your friends.
And that is gonna serve you
a lot better than,
-you know, a savings account.
-Sure.
[Patrick] People spend
so much time
making money.
And if they just, like, tried
to not spend so much,
that'd be way easier
than working so hard
[chuckles] to make so much.
-[Tyler] Yes.
-[Patrick laughing]
[Patrick] A lot of our actions
are based on, like, rewards.
You get, like, a trophy
or something.
You know,
it's a reward system.
And the whole society
is structured like that.
Graduate high school,
you get to go to college.
You know, like, you get
to play the next level.
The more you go down
that route, the more invested
you are.
In this way, they've hijacked
our reward system
to serve the machine.
Would you say this is
the vision of this place
is coming out the way
that you expected?
Not exactly, but yeah.
Like, very similar.
Where it goes
from here though,
I don't know so much.
Everybody kind of needs
to be on board
-[Patrick] Uh-huh.
-with how to move forward.
I was talking with Tree.
He has a vision for, like
He didn't say Burning Man,
but something like it.
I definitely like over here.
Right? For a party because,
like, we're far enough away
from them.
Right, 'cause I've been
wanting to have, like,
a time where we can,
like, drink some wine
and play music and dance.
But I hadn't wanted to keep
the kids up.
RIght over here, maybe.
I'm guessing
that doesn't really line up
with your vision.
It's a fun thought,
but not realistic.
[Tree] Music and dancing,
that's my medicine
and sometimes with this group,
it's hard to invoke
that energy.
For me, like,
I'm a big party guy, you know?
This is This is everything
I've been working towards.
People go to festivals.
Burning Man and Rainbow.
And they have
these experiences
that are similar to this.
-Everybody's so happy
and everybody's dancing.
-[Tyler] A natural high.
-[Patrick] It's really high,
you know.
-[Tyler] Yeah.
But that's not
It's not sustainable.
You can't have
a perpetual party.
Living in the woods means
that you can live however
you can imagine
because you're here
on rural land
where you can actually
do pretty much whatever
you want.
I want to create spaces
that are safe.
[Tyler] Yeah.
Safe for children,
safe for recovering
alcoholics.
Patrick has a strong vision
on lifestyle.
But at a certain point,
people have different ideas
of what they want to create.
So we're gonna throw
a sexy party?
-[man] Oh, yeah!
-Yeah!
-Let's go do it!
-[woman howls]
-[all laughing]
-[man] Tree party
for the people.
[Tree laughing] Yeah.
[soft music playing]
[man sighs]
This place is unlike
anywhere else in the world.
-Hey.
-Hi, Tisheila.
-Hi.
-Hello.
-Heard there was heat here.
-[man] There is.
Mind if I join you all?
You know, it's just like
this little secret safe space
for, like, misfits.
-This is your guys' bus?
-[Patrick] Mm-hm.
Us and our daughter.
We live full-time in here.
Do any of you other guys
have families here?
I have a 14-year-old here.
But then there are
other couples and singles
and every variety.
Yeah. Got a, um, boyfriend
back at home.
And, kind of
another situation.
Um
I guess I can open
with you all since you are.
I'm, um, poly.
Well, that sounds fun.
[all laughing]
Interesting.
-It is interesting.
-[Vibe] Yeah.
Was that your decision
or was that you
and your partner's
decision collectively?
-[Tisheila] It was mine.
-It was yours. Yeah.
-I introduced it.
-[Patrick] Mm-hm.
Um, I desired it.
-So there's you and multiple
other partners.
-[Tisheila] No.
-[Patrick] Okay.
-Well, multiple as in two.
-[Patrick] Okay, two
-[laughs] That's it.
Two partners.
Uh, two male partners?
-No, a male and a female.
-[Patrick] A male
and a female. Okay.
Uh, a lot of times,
couples in communities
don't really work so well.
-[Tisheila] Mm-hm.
-And the reason that I see
is because they give
-too much of their energy
to each other.
-Mm-hm.
-In a community with,
you know, 20 or more people
-[Tisheila] Mm-hm.
Uh, people need to be able
to give their energy
to the community.
-Exactly.
-You know, yeah, I think
polyamory kind of, like, gives
people a taste of that
a little bit, you know.
I see us as like somewhat,
like, maybe a branch
of polyamory where, like,
we just live
very intimately together.
[Tisheila] There's such
a loving community.
It's easy to be here.
And they're open to sharing
and helping you
and teaching you things
that you've never known.
I so love this.
-Yeah, yeah.
-Like I'm in the Garden
of Eden or something. [laughs]
Tisheila, when I hear
she wants to be part
of the movement,
like, I believe that.
You know, uh
Yeah. The way she talks
and carries herself,
it doesn't seem
it seems authentic
and, like, genuine.
[birds chirping]
[Heather laughs]
[Heather muttering]
-[both laughing]
-[Heather] Push!
[Heather laughs]
[Tyler] Oh.
-[Heather] Hey, girl.
-Hi. Sorry.
[chuckles] I was just gonna,
like, get a tan.
-Like, maybe use my floatie.
-[Heather] Yeah.
Did you all not
bring bathing suits?
[Heather] I did,
but I didn't feel
like putting it on.
-[Heather laughs]
-Cool, do you do this,
like, a lot, like, skinny-dip,
-I don't know.
-[Tyler] We have a hot tub
at our house
that we usually get naked in.
Stumbling upon Heather
and Tyler in the woods
completely naked
was shocking.
So have you ever
been naked in public?
-I like clothes, personally.
-[Heather chuckles]
And I would just feel odd.
-How old are you?
-Twenty-five.
-I think as you get older,
you care less.
-Probably.
-Like, the older you get,
the less filter you have.
-Yeah, I stopped caring
-a long time ago.
-[Jessica chuckles]
You got a flea on your nipple.
[Heather laughs]
-[Heather] A flea?
-[Tyler] Got it.
It was definitely interesting
to see, like, how open
they are with their bodies
and how expressive they are.
How much they've really, like,
gotten into this whole thing.
How has this experience
changed you as a person?
I feel like I realized, like,
material things matter
not at all.
All these people here
are so happy and they choose
to not have much,
like, physical things.
They have experiences.
I've also, like, been
on my phone way less.
-[Heather] That's a big deal.
-I've had a lot less anxiety.
-I think.
-[Heather] Mm-hm.
You kind of start to realize
that a lot of it
is in your head
-[Jessica] Mm-hm.
-more so than
in the real world.
And you can make
the world anything
that you want it to be.
Here, we're like we don't
really have a job, but to
like build this society.
Like, we don't have anything
really tying us down.
You know, I can work less
and make more of my life.
-Yeah.
-[Heather] Like, we're talking
about doing this community,
kind of living in our future.
-Our very, very soon future.
-[Jessica] Yeah.
So you gotta find a balance.
-Yes.
-[Heather] So
Whatever you decide
with the 10 days,
make the decision
for yourself.
-[Jessica] Mm-hm.
-We'll support ya.
-And know that even the
community will support you.
-[Jessica] Thank you.
At this point, I'm just
very conflicted.
Like, is this a cult?
Is it not?
And talking to her,
someone who's
very well-rounded and smart,
and having her speak
very highly of this
and saying, "No,
it's not a cult,"
I trust what she says.
-Do you have a boyfriend?
-No, I don't.
[Heather] Mm.
[Tyler] So Heather's bisexual
and I can't provide
what a woman can.
[Heather and Jessica laugh]
'Cause I just don't have
those working parts.
-And I don't have that type
of feminine
-Darn!
[all laughing]
But, seriously, if she ever
wants to bring in
another female, she can.
But the rule is, you know,
everybody gets to participate.
Including myself.
-I was gonna ask that.
-[both chuckle]
-What about you?
-I'm straight.
[chuckles] Yes.
Um
Yeah. [chuckles]
That's pretty much it.
And if you wanted
to experiment with it,
you can.
We're open for you
to try it out.
[Heather] Just be comfortable.
-Oh, okay. [chuckles]
-[Heather] You do
what's comfortable for you.
Well, no, I'm not saying,
like, if you feel
comfortable enough
Is this my initiation?
Thank you, I appreciate
your openness.
I'm not there yet
-[Heather] Fair.
-in my life.
[Heather speaking]
-I think so. I'm getting
kind of hot.
-[Heather] It's hot.
[both grunting]
[Heather] Shut up.
-[Tyler grunting]
-[Heather laughing]
[Heather squeals]
This whole conversation
is pretty uncomfortable.
I mean, being next
to two naked people
is never, like, great.
Yeah, I don't feel like
I need to know them
in the naked sense.
[upbeat music playing]
[Xans] All right, y'all.
We're gonna need
some help today
on this resource run.
It's a little different.
-[Jessica] Okay.
-[Ricky] Resource run?
We're gonna get food
for the community today
hopefully.
-Okay.
-Yeah?
-Pick up some food.
-Back to the dumpsters.
[Xans] Not back
to the dumpsters.
It'll be a little different.
In this instance,
it's gonna be roadkill.
Okay.
I'm not fully invested
in this.
It's just kind of gross.
-[Tom] See anything
-[thumping]
slap on the side.
-Okay.
-I'll pull over
and we'll check it out.
I'm scared.
[Tom] Let's go find us
some food.
We're looking for small game
or deer,
um, that has been,
like, recently, uh, hit.
We only have a few hours
before the meat turns bad.
[thumping]
What do we got?
Oh. Yeah. No.
You can already see
it's decomposed.
But that's a coyote.
RIP to you, fella.
-[chuckles] RIP.
-Rest in peace.
[Tom] Damn.
The search continues.
[Xans] You're so much more
down to earth
than I had expected.
-Really?
-Yeah.
-You think so?
-Mm-hm.
Thank you.
-Um, Ricky?
-Yeah?
Did you do any research
about The Garden beforehand?
I did a little bit,
but I didn't
thoroughly read through
the whole entire thing.
So I'm just winging it.
[Jessica] Like, a lot of it
on social media,
made it seem
like it was a cult.
I don't know if you saw
any of that too?
I kind of had
that little feeling about it.
What do you think, Xans?
Um
I don't know.
There was a lot of drama
when we first got here.
Someone who was part
of our seed group
named Narayah,
she just wasn't vibing
really well with the rest
of the group.
And Tree had fully instigated
an all-out situation.
She was on her phone
and, like, taking a selfie
or something.
-Uh-huh.
-And Tree went
and stole her phone
and, like, snatched it
out of her hand.
He started trucking it
down the driveway
with her phone.
That is a lot of drama.
[chuckles]
-Yeah.
-I had no idea.
[Xans] I think Tree's behavior
went unchecked.
And it was
totally irresponsible
and childish.
Yeah.
Like, totally amped up
the whole situation
for no reason.
That just kind of raised
some red flags for me
about Tree.
I always thought of him being
like one of the leaders here
and someone
that everyone respected
at least.
And this is the first time
that I've heard a bad word
be said about him.
It's raising
a lot of questions
and if anything,
it just makes me want answers
and it makes me want
to reach out
to certain people involved.
One of the things
that I've seen
is these communities,
uh, pop up and then die
and it's because people
give up too soon.
It's very important to not
give up, you know.
Uh, five years
into this project,
it was still very difficult.
The Garden,
it was humble beginnings.
I was very optimistic
about, like, we were just
gonna hit the ground running.
We were gonna plant
all this stuff.
We were gonna build
all this infrastructure
and it was gonna be awesome.
All these people
from all over were gonna come
and be a part of it.
And that's not really
what happened.
What happened is people
really wanted to hang out
and they really wanted
to drink.
I tried to encourage people
for a little while to, like,
do other things like,
"Let's get
some chickens together.
Let's plant some stuff."
And people were really
not so much into it.
At times,
it was like discouraging.
And at times, I left
because it was
so discouraging.
Then I'd come back
and clean up the trash
basically
and start over. [laughs]
The sixth year,
things started moving,
you know,
really in a nice way.
I think that
there's definitely a time
and place for partying.
But we're trying to accomplish
something that's not
the easiest thing to do.
In my opinion, it's not really
the time or place to be
drinking a lot of alcohol.
But also we're inviting people
into the space
that we don't know
and some of those people
might have problems
with alcohol.
Maybe later,
after we've built up
some infrastructure.
I believe that five years
was absolutely necessary
and there was no other way
to go about it
-because there's
a learning process.
-[interviewer] Mm-hm.
Um, and you can't read
these things in a book,
you have to experience them.
[soft music playing]
[Tisheila] So today
is my 10th day.
[Jessica] It's my 10th day.
So that means the council
is going to vote
on whether or not I can stay.
I really, really would like
to stay here.
But if one person decides
they're not comfortable
with that decision,
then I will be packing.
[Jessica] Even though
I'm pretty sure I'm cool
with everyone here,
my fate is, ultimately,
in their hands.
I mean, I've seen
some crazy things happen
in councils,
so I'm just gonna
see what happens.
[horn blowing]
[laughing]
[bleep] It's becoming
real now. [laughs]
They blew the horn again,
so that means we have
to get over there and, uh
[clicks tongue]
I'm a little nervous.
[chuckles]
But we'll see how it goes.
All right, let's do it.
I really do feel like I found
a new purpose.
And I've connected
with these people
on a deep level.
It's chilly out here.
I don't want that journey
to end here.
I feel like this is
the beginning
of a new journey for me.
Council, the first topic
is Tisheila, 10 days.
In my world,
I'm like kind of the misfit.
You know, I'm kind of
like that outsider.
And I feel like maybe
everybody here kind of
feels that way
in their own world as well.
And so, being here,
I just feel like
I found my people.
And so, my desire is
to stay here longer
and continue to build
a relationship with each
and every one of you.
I do want to put in a request
to stay longer.
-[all cheering]
-[Tisheila laughs]
[group clapping]
[laughter]
[whistling]
Next point is
Jessica's 10 day.
[light laughter]
-[Jessica] I'll stand too.
-[chuckles]
Um, this is my first council
that I've spoken at,
so I'm kind of nervous.
Um [chuckles]
But I came here
really only knowing
what I saw on social media.
Um, which was
completely different
than what it actually is.
I never thought
in a million years
I'd be able to live in a tent
for 10 days.
Learn And eating things
off the ground.
-Like actual plants and stuff.
-[all laughing]
[Tisheila] When Jessica first
got here, I thought that
she wasn't gonna handle it.
But she actually got in
and dug her heels in.
Like, everything that we do,
she's like, "Okay, let's go."
I've made so many
amazing memories.
So, if you'll let me,
I would love to stay
and just keep
experiencing this
will all of you.
-Thank you.
-It would be an honor, truly.
Yeah, I feel the same as Joy.
I'm, like, honored
that you actually wanna stay.
It shows a lot
for your growth.
-I'm like, "Wow!
She likes it?"
-Yeah, of course.
So can we do
10 seconds of silence
while the train goes by?
[thunder rumbling]
[all cheering]
-[Mai] All right.
-Thank you.
I get accepted
with open arms, thankfully.
Then I hear sirens going off.
-[thunder rumbling]
-Is that the tornado siren?
[Mai] Yeah, there's a siren.
-[woman] It's swirling.
-[man] I know, look at that.
[Jessica] There's
swirling clouds. Like,
there's a tornado coming.
So we need to get out of here.
Council just got cutoff
right then. We just got
the warning.
We heard the sirens
right behind us,
so we're getting
the [bleep] outta here.
We're gonna
go head over to our neighbors,
check out their root cellar.
-[man] Over here.
-[thunder rumbling]
[Tyler] Are we ready to rock?
Do you know
what I find really ironic?
Here we are
as a self-sufficient community
running for safety
during a crisis.
Ask her
if there's an actual cellar.
What if we had
a storm shelter,
and not have to run
to a random lady's basement?
So we came to our neighbors
and we're in their basement
right now.
This feels very hectic to have
to evacuate the land, uh,
when there's a
tornado warning.
Love you.
Oh, my God.
We're literally gonna be
right in the middle of it.
We could be losing service,
cellphone towers
could be going down
around our area.
[Jessica] We're
losing service?
There's still people
at The Garden
thinking that they're
gonna be okay in their bus.
People are not
taking it seriously.
They obviously
have no idea
what they're talking about,
they've obviously never been
through a tornado.
And hopefully,
by the end of the night
they'll understand
why I was taking it
so serious.
Things gotta change.
And I think that change
starts tomorrow.
[Jessica] It was pretty scary.
At the camp
there's zero protection,
there's no inside.
There's just trees
and ditches, so.
Yeah, I was just,
like, frustrated.
Sorry.
I haven't been inside
in so long.
I feel like I'm just
constantly outside, [chuckles]
which is a struggle.
Thank you. [crying]
There's no
tornado shelter here.
So it's like, "Um
What am I doing?"
So I'm rethinking things
at this point. [chuckles]
I'm like, "Girl,
what are you doing?"
-[Ahbee] Are the poles
coming down?
-Careful.
[man] You guys want
the rope in there?
I look over
and I see the teepee
about to collapse.
And I know that there's people
in the teepee, like,
trying to fix it.
[Ahbee] Maybe people
should just get outta there.
Get out! Get out! Get out!
-Everyone okay?
-[Julia] Yeah.
-[Ahbee] You okay?
-[woman] You okay?
[man] We're okay. All of us.
[Ahbee] Holy [bleep]!
I was like
I was like, "People
should get outta there."
Then it literally fell.
We'll all in there
trying to fix it and then
Ahbee comes in she's like,
"I think you guys
should just get out."
And then at that moment
the pole snaps.
Oh! They snapped.
-[Julia] One snapped.
-Oh, wow.
We all missed it
beside Wolfgang
got hit in the arm.
-Oh, [bleep]. Is he all right?
-I think he's all right.
-[Patrick] That's good.
-He's gonna go ice it.
-Yeah, could've been so bad.
-[man] Yes.
Everybody's okay.
We are SOL
when it comes
to safety from tornados.
And a storm shelter
is my number one priority.
[soft music playing]
So this is a good spot
you think?
[Patrick] I think
there's a nice hill,
and I think we could
enter through here.
You know,
when the brush is gone
this would be
a good access point.
Storm shelter,
I'm in big support of it.
It's really the ability
to store things, uh,
through the winter
without them freezing,
and we can, uh, stay safe
in case of a tornado.
Yeah, the hill
is nice and steep,
so that means
we don't have to dig out
as much.
And you can take the dirt
that you dig out and mound it
around the sides,
around the top.
And also, when we set it,
if we put it at a slight angle
any water
that does get down there
will drain out.
[Tyler] But we can still
go check out that other spot
Swoop and I
-[Patrick] Consider
our options, all right.
-[Tyler] Let's go.
Right here
has a pretty good slope.
And we were thinking
right through here.
Now that we decided
that we need to have
a storm shelter,
there's a lot of good ideas
being passed around.
Like, there's this old bus
on the property
that we could reinforce
and bury that in the ground.
Or, my personal favorite,
we could reinforce
a shipping container
and put that in the ground.
That bus, like, it's free,
which is a giant bonus,
and a shipping container's
gonna cost money.
They cost about as much
to get delivered as they do
to purchase.
So that is the biggest con
about the shipping container.
But the bus
needs a lot of work.
[Swoop] You gotta take
the motor out of it.
[Patrick] I know, that's what
I was thinking too.
Get out all the fluids.
Also, a shipping container,
like, the whole size of it is,
like, it's maximum space
for the size of it.
Where a bus,
you're dealing with, like,
the axle, and the tires,
-and, you know,
the height of it.
-Right.
Not all space
that you can utilize.
As a prepper, like,
this is something
I've been wanting to do
for a very, very long time.
-Yeah, this is gonna be fun.
-[Patrick] Cool.
[soft music playing]
Narayah, she just
wasn't vibing really well
with the rest of the group
and I think Tree's behavior
went unchecked.
[Jessica] I've been hearing
Narayah this, Narayah that,
and I was able
to look up her name
via mutual people
on social media.
And I messaged her
and got her number,
and she's ready to talk.
So I just wanna make sure
that I really have
the full story.
Hi. Thank you so much
for being willing to call.
I really appreciate it.
There's just some things
that are, um, not really
adding up.
I was just wondering
if you'd be willing to meet
with myself
and two other people
who are new here.
Um, I think we're all just
a little bit curious as to
what really happened.
Um, would you be willing
to share your side
of the story in person?
I really appreciate
you being willing
to meet up with us.
[Jessica] Meeting up
with Narayah
is extremely risky
because people
would think like,
okay, I'm just, like,
an outside person
trying to catch them.
Um, I just feel like
there's two sides
to every story
and I want
to get to the bottom of it.
[Tisheila] This is not
for the weak.
And it's damn sure
not for the lazy.
They labor,
and it's a labor of love.
And I respect it.
[group oming]
[Tisheila] There is
a whole lot that I like
about this place.
But there's just one thing
that I'm uneasy about,
and that's, like,
security and safety.
[group singing]
And, um, there's such
a open-door policy
you don't know
who might come in and out.
If a random individual
walks up on the property,
who's to say
they might not, you know
do something crazy.
I just think that in America
you should always have
some kind of security measures
in place.
No matter where you are.
I keep my machete close.
This baton is a flashlight,
but it's also a stun gun.
[chuckles]
Martial art knife,
this will do some damage.
This
is my newest toy.
This is an AK-47
BB gun.
It's just a BB gun.
But as far
as intimidation goes,
it'll definitely make someone
backup off you.
If not [bleep] their pants.
[chuckles]
If someone comes on this land,
this might be the only defense
that people may have.
If I need to pull it out
and let somebody know
that you need to get the hell
up outta here, then that's
what's gonna happen.
[soft music playing]
[Tree] So we moved
all the buses over to here.
We're gonna have a sexy party.
We're gonna grab the hot tub,
making it steamy,
we're gonna dance,
we're gonna celebrate,
we're gonna party.
-Here's good.
-Yeah, sure.
We'll figure it out.
Nice, guys.
Oh, my gosh, it's so sick.
I'm super excited.
I need to dance so badly.
It's my form of therapy,
it's how I heal,
is through my body.
I'm moving it,
shaking my ass, you know?
There's all, like,
little sitting areas, ya know.
And we can move 'em
closer to the fire,
if we want.
For me, we're like
a working group,
we're like a team,
and we're going off
to build a new space.
You know, we got a lot to do.
And I don't know if the party
is really
in the creation process
of an intentional
community space.
Especially when
there's children,
and recovering alcoholics,
and people that have problems
with maintaining
their composure when drunk.
Joy, let's go.
[Joy] Wolfgang. Wolfgang.
This is what all the parents
are, you know,
trying to avoid.
-I'm just gonna go do some--
-Well, let's--
[Wolfgang] No, no, no.
This is just not, like,
it's not a talk,
it's, Joy, let's go.
[Patrick] In my mind,
this space is gonna have
some kid focus.
And for me, the party
doesn't represent me.
[Tree] We're been here
for a whole month
being dirty ass hippies.
And it's about time
that we get sweaty and down
for some party and celebrate.
Because we've been working
so damn hard
to create this space,
to build a kitchen,
to build a complex,
to build community.
But for me, this is how
you build community,
it's on the dance floor.
[all cheering]
Let's see if this
turns into an orgy, huh?
About this new adventure,
right now I'm pretty
optimistic about it.
The pooping situation,
I'm not feeling it.
This morning there was, like,
five chickens behind me
so I feel kinda violated,
I wasn't cool with that.
It's my first time
setting up a tent.
[laughing]
Part of the reason
why I came here is to prepare
if there was
a zombie apocalypse,
I feel like I could learn
a lot from this community.
So learning these techniques
from them and just learning
their ways,
I'll be able to bring it back
to my wife and daughter
and help them.
Almost good.
I'm not a big fan of bugs,
so this was a good purchase.
Viola.
[dance music playing]
'Cause I got everything♪
Ooh, that is definitely
way better.
That looks way better.
Here you go.
[all laughing]
Look, my ass cheeks
are hanging out, okay.
-Like [squealing]
-[indistinct conversation]
-[Tyler]
-[Mai]
[Tyler] I do agree
with Patrick
that a perpetual party
is not sustainable
and it shouldn't happen.
But just one party,
I'm sick and tired
of good ideas being shot down
just because a couple people
don't want it to happen.
So I'm glad that Tree
put his foot down
and made this party happen.
[Jessica]
[Julia] Yeah. I'm like
a big leopard, you know.
Like, I'm, like,
out in the woods,
I'm on the prowl,
I get what I [bleep] want.
And I look good doing it.
-[music continues]
-[cheering]
[Jessica] This is such
a cool vibe.
The lights are fun.
[Tree] Partying allows us
to be more vulnerable
with each other.
And it puts us in a space
where we're doing something
together for fun.
And that allows us to be more
of our authentic self.
[Jessica]
-[Tyler] Yeah?
-[Jessica] Yeah.
-[Jessica]
-[Ricky] Yeah, yeah.
[Tyler]
[Jessica] Even though Tyler
is a newcomer, he kind of
ascended the ranks.
I feel like he is in charge
and leads a bunch
of new projects.
If he has a suggestion
people will listen to him
and take it into action
a lot of times.
[Ricky] Like, hats off to you,
like, you taught me a lot
within this time range.
Out of Tree, Tyler,
Julia, and Patrick
I would choose Tyler
to be the leader
because he has the background
of how to survive.
Like, the man used to be
in the army.
So I'm with him all the way
because if things hit the fan,
Tyler would know
how to protect us.
[singing]
La luna hoo♪
[Ricky] Oh. [chuckles] Oh! Oh!
-[Jessica] Are you okay?
-[Tyler] You're burning.
[Patrick]
What happened is,
new people coming in,
drinking a lot of alcohol,
and Tree kinda encouraged it.
[Tree] Well, there's a lot
of [bleep] that's been
going on here.
Patrick says, "Why do you
have to turn everything
into a party?"
And I'm really I'm--
[Tree] That's not
That's not what I'm
talking about.
I wanna host parties
and, like, a place
where artists feel like
they can express themselves.
[Tree] I've been working
very hard, thank you
very much.
And I'm being pushed out for,
like, the past six months,
mainly by Patrick.
[Tree] It's happening
all across the world
without Patrick,
why does Patrick
have to be the one who is--
[Tree] Okay. I will see.
You sound like a cult, bro.
I cannot, as an artist,
express myself here.
Because I'm being limited
by the fact that people
wanna have kids.
-And--
-[Timber] That seems
ridiculous to me.
[Tree] Like, you can
have this for families.
[Timber] Yeah.
Forever and forever.
Unless it gets destroyed
by some individuals ideals.
[indistinct conversations]
[Tree] You're funny.
Oh, it's working?
I don't know. No, it's not.
Like, this guys is, like,
[bleep] getting down at me.
[Tree] This is ridiculous.
Y'all are just ridiculous.
Patrick, he's not he leader
of anything.
He's just a guy
who's upholding a vision,
an idea.
I don't know.
I just think he has a partner
maybe that, you know,
wants a dictatorship.
[upbeat music playing]
[Tree] I feel judged
from this community
for wanting to throw parties.
I wanna space where I can
express myself completely
and other can too.
[producer] Tree.
[Tree] Stop filming.
[Tree] If you were
documenting that,
that could put us
-[producer] No, no.
-[Tree] [bleep].
You are putting us
all in danger we need
Like, how
How dare you say that.
"You signed up for this."
[Tree screaming]
You just [bleep] destroyed us!
Now that you're removed,
would you say
that it's a cult?
Definitely.
That party caused
extreme ripples
in the community.
This is a duocracy
unless you're upset about it.
[Tisheila] To know
the people with vendettas
would actually
do something to the food,
that actually pisses me off.
[Tyler] There's prey
and there's predators.
Someone needs to be able
to take charge.
I did speak to Narayah.
Y'all are fighting
a [bleep] war.
[dramatic music playing]
