Ángeles

[phone ringing]
- This is the police. How may I help you?
- [chuckling]
[distorted voice]
I wanna talk to a police officer.
Go ahead. I'm listening.
You're police?
Shouldn't you be at home with your family?
Who is this?
[caller exhales deeply]
They call me
The Undresser.
- [The Undresser breathing heavily]
- [María sighs]
Oh, shit! I didn't see you there, Herrera.
[Emilio sighs]
You got something on your mind, I'm sure?
It seems there's been another victim.
Alma Álvarez.
He tried to strangle her,
but she survived.
We think it was The Undresser.
[The Undresser]
One shouldn't be left all alone.
I'm not alone.
No, not you.
I'm referring to Alma Álvarez.
No matter.
I've already solved that problem.
What did you do to her?
You think I'm just some lowlife thug.
You can't see me.
You simply don't take me seriously.
You think because you arrested some fool
and gave him my name,
that I'll stop killing?
Please, just tell me, what did you do?
I did what I always do.
And I'll keep right on doing it
until you take me seriously.
We already arrested Margarito Flores.
And we had evidence.
It appears we were wrong about him.
What do you mean, "we," asshole?
My hypothesis was we had a copycat killer,
but new information suggests
that it really was
Hold on, Herrera.
So you mean I was in a press conference,
lying to the whole country, in real time,
like the world's biggest asshole?
Is that it?
[sighs]
[nurse] Hello. Juárez Hospital.
This is the police station.
In room number 503,
there's a female patient in danger.
She needs to be checked.
Get to her room immediately. I mean it.
[The Undresser] You there? Don't leave me
talking to myself, you bitch!
Yes, I'm listening. Sorry.
I'm sorry.
I don't like to raise my voice.
I wanna know if you think Tito Flores
could really have done those things.
Well, he confessed to it.
And tell me,
how did you get that confession?
Did you beat him?
[Gerardo] No, sir.
When Margarito Flores saw the photos,
his reaction indicated he was the killer.
And besides
he had signed his confession
of his own volition.
But there will be more dead women.
[Gerardo clicks tongue]
And that's not the only problem.
A journalist for The Independent
has been briefed
on details from the case file.
At any moment, he could publish
a bombshell piece in that paper.
I need to be left alone
to conduct this investigation.
And what I really need is for you
to catch The Undresser. Am I clear?
[The Undresser]
Everything is right in front of you,
but you only see what you want to see.
- What is right in front of us?
- [chuckles] No.
I won't do your job for you.
You do your job, and I'll do mine.
Let's not mix things up.
I know that Tito Flores
couldn't have killed those women.
Why?
Because he wasn't meticulous.
He had no eye for detail.
The Undresser does.
Thank you.
The details are my trademark.
Why'd you go to Paola's funeral?
[The Undresser breathes loudly, hangs up]
[dial tone beeping]
[breathing shakily]
[nurse] Officer? Officer.
Go ahead.
The nurses tried to resuscitate her,
but Alma Álvarez is deceased.
WOMEN IN BLUE
[Octavio] It was probably some moron
just screwing around.
But he knew about Alma Álvarez.
I told you to keep away from this case,
as you recall.
Yes, and you also told me
to answer the phones, which I did.
Neglecting both my husband
and my children.
I was doing exactly what you ordered me to
when that man called,
and now you wanna say that he's
I told you to answer the telephones,
not to indulge
the first fucking asshole who calls!
- How are things at home?
- How is that any of your business?
It's not my business,
but you're hysterical.
What do you expect?
Some man called me and said
he's The Undresser, that he killed Alma.
And then at the hospital
they told me that she'd just passed away.
Look, I'll investigate,
but keep your nose clean.
Can you do that?
Play it smart,
because there's a lot at stake here.
I understand that passion
that draws you to the truth, but
And I can't believe
I'm fucking saying this right now.
But we have rules for a reason.
As your boss,
I'm ordering you to back off.
Drink up.
And what's that?
It's just a little bit of medicine
to ease whatever's going on at home.
[thunder rumbling]
[clock ticking]
[door opening]
[footsteps creaking]
Did you have fun tonight?
No, not really.
So you went, then?
Yes, of course I did.
I also went. You weren't there.
I didn't stay for long.
Where'd you go after that?
Where'd I What do you mean?
It's 3:30 in the morning.
Where'd you go?
To the club, with some clients.
Why?
Nothing.
María, what I'm saying is the truth.
I get it. Close the door.
[thunder rumbling]
[sighing]
I was starting to think you went
with the competition for this year.
- [giggles]
- Happy birthday, dear.
Thank you so much, Isma.
How will you celebrate?
Um, with my family.
With all of my brothers and my parents.
This year, I have a surprise.
- Really?
- Uh-huh.
Oh!
- Hmm.
- It's made with fresh peaches.
[coroner] The doctor on staff
said she died early in the morning.
- Respiratory failure.
- [Gerardo] Jesus.
How the fuck did that happen
while she's in a hospital?
How the hell would I know?
There was a tumor in her neck.
Could have suffocated her.
No.
She had surgery and was recovering.
[sighs] Does she have any family?
Not in the city.
- We haven't contacted them.
- Don't contact them.
Keep it quiet.
Not a word to anyone. Understood?
I was all alone.
There was no one else at the station.
[Valentina] You still seem shocked.
I didn't sleep well.
[Valentina] So, we've gotta do something,
because if the police
won't reopen the case,
The Undresser won't stop killing.
I spoke with Romandía,
and he's agreed to help us.
[Valentina] Careful with Romandía.
Yeah, he's our lieutenant,
but is he one of us?
[in German] Do you speak German?
[in English] Where is entrance to museum?
Where is "the" entrance to "the" museum.
- [in German] Thank you.
- [English] That's how you say it.
I know where it is. I'll take you there.
[Valentina] All right, what do we know?
That The Undresser drives a car
with a white roof.
Ah, okay, then.
Do you know how many white-roofed cars
are scattered across this city?
We don't have the plates
or access to the case files.
So how do we ID it?
There might be a way.
What? Spill.
Our job at the station
is basically filing documents,
so if we request vehicle records,
it won't look suspicious.
And then it's a matter
of cleaning up the data,
and filtering by year of production,
where they were first registered,
then sort drivers
by criminal records, sex and age.
That'll take forever to get any results.
- But it's an idea. So what's yours?
- Hmm
We all know the only way
to put pressure on the police
is by using the media.
Ah, so you're gonna go see Lucas again.
Don't look at me like that.
- Didn't you say he's finished with you?
- Maybe I'm finished with him.
But this isn't about Lucas or me.
- So, what do you tell him?
- The truth.
That the police covered up Alma's murder.
You can't say that. You're not a doctor.
That's only going to make us all
look bad, as cops.
No, the police do that well enough
on their own.
- Hey, boss.
- Come on in.
Have a seat, Lucas.
[sighs] Lucas, Emilio Escobedo called me,
and he asked
to hold your piece for a few days.
Everyone should know
that The Undresser's still out there.
Of course, but, Lucas
- No, there's no excuse.
- Lucas, please.
We have to let them do their work. Hmm?
Before you get upset,
I do have something for you.
Right now all anyone's talking about
are killers.
Gregorio Cadenas is publishing a book
he's written from his jail cell.
Who's Gregorio Cadenas?
- [coroner] You took your sweet time.
- Yeah. [chuckles]
I came as quickly as I could.
You're not my only friend here.
[chuckles] We know that's not true.
[both laugh]
You're looking good, huh?
[chuckles]
And you look like fucking dog shit.
What's with the mop on your head anyway?
And the mustache? [chuckles]
You look like a bulldog, man.
Come on, now.
You think the women will pay you any mind
looking like a bum?
Okay, enough. That's not why I'm here.
I know. Just forget it.
I'm not telling you anything.
You don't even know what case it is.
Makes no difference.
You're not a detective anymore.
[sighs] Alma Álvarez.
The way that she died, was it similar
to the victims of The Undresser?
No. Because Alma Álvarez died of hypoxia.
I mean when they found her.
Listen, I shouldn't be
telling you this, but
The Undresser
called the station last night.
What are you saying?
Don't fuck with me, Uriel. I know you.
So you're saying you're sure,
beyond a reasonable doubt,
that we caught The Undresser?
So let's be sure.
Jane Doe, unknown.
Pilar Valdéz.
Arantza Ruiz.
Lucía Martínez.
Nora Menéndez.
Paola Machado.
Alma.
- [María] Good afternoon.
- Excuse me.
Ronaldo, please move those.
They're breakable.
[Ronald] Yes, yes, yes.
I'll be right back.
- Yes, hi.
- How are you?
- I'm well. You?
- Good, thanks.
Uh, my boss was here last night,
and he forgot his coat.
- Nothing was left behind.
- Could you check, please?
He gets distracted,
and, um, maybe he just got confused.
Um, he's a distinguished member
of the club.
He's Alejandro de la Torre.
I can't give you any information.
Maybe just check the sign-in sheet.
If his name were in there, at least then
we'd know if he were even here last night.
Good afternoon, ma'am.
- Well, thanks anyway.
- Goodbye.
Ronaldo. Ronaldo!
Didn't I just tell you to move those?
I told you, Ronaldo.
You can explain this
to the general manager.
- [Ronaldo] Sorry.
- You're impossible.
Hey. What's all this?
You did this yourself in two hours?
One hour 54.
[Valentina chuckles]
What do you have there?
Is that Mom's will
where she leaves everything to you?
It's nothing. What's going on?
Okay, then. We all have secrets.
I got more important information
from Ángeles.
She found a suspect
in the vehicle registrations.
Let's tell Romandía.
Why tell Romandía? Why tell him?
Because he'll talk to Gerardo
and get him to reopen the case.
Romandía only cares about Romandía.
He nearly resigned on our behalf.
[scoffs] You really think so?
If we screw up and go down,
he goes down with us.
It's all or nothing.
That's precisely why I trust him.
I'm not sure we should rely
on your sense of which men to trust.
[door opens]
- [knocking]
- [sighs] Coming!
- [spouse] Open the door.
- [Gerardo] Just give me a sec!
[spouse] I wanna lie down, honey.
I'm wiped out.

and feel your baby kicking.
Put your hand here.
- You see? [giggles]
- [gasps]
Oh, wow.
[Gerardo chuckles]
Gerardo, what is all of this, huh?
It's I was just trying
to organize some files.
Don't worry. This case has been closed.
[spouse] Hey, how about
we take a walk together?
Forget all of that.
What?
- Gerardo? What is it?
- Why don't you lie down?
Just relax and go for a walk with me.
Gerardo.
Sorry. I have to run.
What's going on now? Gerardo!
This is what we've been working on
down here.
We know you're trustworthy.
So you've got yourselves
a little war room here, is that it?
I'm very impressed.
Impressed as in, like, "job well done",
or impressed as in,
"Go pack up your things, you're fired"?
Impressed as in, "The bosses can never
find out about any of this shit."
What do you have?
Right, well, The Undresser
drives one of these vehicles here.
[Ángeles clears throat]
There are 3,452 of these types of cars
in the country with a white roof.
In the city, there are 1,826.
[Octavio] Still way too many.
I scraped the files we had
on possible owners
by model of car and year.
Then I filtered out cars registered
to women, or the handicapped,
and kept any names
attached to criminal records.
Primarily by those who committed
violence against women.
That left 26,
but only one name caught my attention.
Andrés López.
He mainly has citations
for illegal parking,
speeding violations, and reckless driving.
I think it'd be better to consider those
with histories of domestic violence.
No.
With all due respect,
Andrés López accumulated tickets
steadily up until seven weeks ago.
Right before all the killings started up.
If you're killing, you get more cautious.
You don't wanna be pulled over
for anything.
- So, where exactly is this model citizen?
- [Ángeles] That's the problem.
We only have a PO box, and we need
a judge to issue a search warrant.
I'll take care of it.
MEXICO POSTAL SERVICE
[postal worker] And here you go.
- Hey there, darling.
- [postal worker] Hello.
I'm Captain Octavio Romandía.
Well, then,
what can I do for you, Captain?
- I could think of some things.
- [chuckles]
But for now, I need access to box B-403.
It's under Andrés López.
Without a warrant, I can't help you with
I could tell you know what you're doing.
Can I tell you a secret?
You can trust me.
I think he's The Undresser.
That's why I'm here.
Oh, my God.
Yes, indeed.
- López, was it?
- López.
Be right back.
His mail hasn't been checked
in seven weeks.
Holy schnikes.
Thanks for all the help, darling.
Perfect.
- [gasps] Oh, honey.
- [chuckles]
Happy birthday to you, Gabina.
Thanks, Mom. Am I too early?

- [Herrera] Who's at the door, Tomasa?
- [gasps] It's nothing.
- May I come in?
- Not yet, honey.
Let the dust settle a bit, okay?
What are you doing here?
Don't ask dumb questions.
You know why I'm here.
- You're not welcome here. Bye. Leave.
- Hey, don't treat your sister like that.
You wanna eat cake?
Go find your friends and have a tea party.

I said inside now!

-"Yes, ma'am" is right.

- Fuck you, asshole!
[honking continues]
- Careful, Curly.
- Sorry.
[Gabriel scoffs]
Happy birthday. [chuckles]

I got you something.
It's nothing, really.
It's just a little token.
[Gabina chuckles] Oh.
Well, it means a lot to me.
[both chuckle]
It's too bad I threw the cake
in the trash. [chuckles]
Hey. They're wrong about you.
You keep doing what you're doing.
It's very important.
Were you listening to that?
You overheard them forbid me to come
inside, and you didn't say anything?
And what could I possibly have said?
Nobody listens to me.
You should have tried at least.
Gabina!
Hi, María.
I wanted to talk to you about Gabina.
Maybe now's not good.
I think my husband's cheating on me.
Again.
That's common.
In Mexico, the relapse rate
of adultery's 27%,
so it's very probable that
he has cheated on you more than once.
This isn't a case, Ángeles.
It's my life.
I know.
Sorry.
[sighs] I'm sorry for mentioning it.
It isn't your problem.
How would I know for sure?
In the time since his first infraction,
did he change his behavior at all?
A little, at first, but then
I guess he didn't, really.
And did he ever express remorse to you for
committing the infraction to begin with?
No.
Did he at least admit
to committing the offense?
No.
Then, with that information, I'd say
he's very likely to have cheated again.
But if you want to be sure, just ask him.
[sighs]
So what's going on with Gabina?

You said it your first day at the Academy.
I'd forgotten that.
Well, she sure didn't.
The 6th of April, 1945.
That is your birth date. I heard it.

[Ángeles] Sure. No problem.
[María] Happy birthday.

[Díaz] We've checked it all.
[Gerardo] Then we've missed something.
What does "169" mean?
[Díaz] Look, Gerardo,
it could be inconsequential.

There's no reason to suspect
it's significant at all.

but we do have the location
of his citations.
We discarded the farthest ones.
These 12 are all from the same violation.
He blocked the entrance
to a private residence.
The same woman called it in each time.
So I guess he either works or lives
around here.
Let's go have a talk with this woman.
- We can interview her after our shift.
- [María] No.
I can't stay out late today.
We can interview her now.
In case Romandía needs us,
it's better if you two stayed.
María and I will go.
- Sure.
- [Valentina] Okay?
- Let's go.
- [footsteps departing]
[Emilio] The press are thirsty for blood,
and I won't give it to them.
Sir, I have no excuses
to account for my failures.
The best thing for this case
and for the country
is to replace me
as lead detective immediately.
So now you're a fucking martyr.
Bravely stepping aside
so some other asshole
can mop up the shit you created.
Blood, Herrera. Blood.
Sir, I'll tender my resignation
I don't want you
to fucking resign, you asshole!
[Emilio sighing]
Herrera.
What I need is information.
I need some answers, goddammit.
I got something.
I think the crimes are linked
with a Bible verse.
I wish I never knew him.
He's my neighbor across the street.
And you filed all the reports
on Mr. López?
I really didn't have much of a choice,
because otherwise he'd leave his vehicle
in front of my garage.
- Did you ever try to talk to him about it?
- No way. He was an asshole.
I filed my complaints with the police
as a decent citizen.
I was relieved the day
he finally up and left.
So he moved away? When was this?
Well, I'm not exactly sure when.
I think he just took his car and left.
If there's a God,
he'll keep him far away from here.
Well, thank you very much
for your time and help, miss.
[Valentina] Thanks.
[María] Take care. Goodbye.
Do we call Romandía?
Or do we just take a little look around?
- No.
- [chuckles]
No.
- You can stay here.
- Val.
- What? I'll just be a few minutes.
- No. Look
She just said that no one's there.
- So what's the harm? Let's go in.
- Valentina.
You stay there.
Keep an eye out and just watch.
Or you can come with
and be a real cop.
Ugh. Valentina, you're crazy.
[Emilio] Ladies and gentlemen,
friends of the press, and all those
who are viewing at home.
You're probably wondering
why we called you to this press conference
with such urgent timing.
Detective Herrera.
Thank you, Mr. Escobedo.
The Central Police Department
and the Transit Bureau
would like to inform you that,
unfortunately for all of us,
the case of The Undresser of Tlalpan
is not totally closed.
- [reporter] What do you mean? He's dead.
- [reporter 2] Explain yourself.
Valentina, be careful.
Careful.
[Gerardo] We'd like to announce
that we have entered
into what we are calling
phase two of the investigation.
[reporters clamoring]
Now, as you're all aware,
phase one concluded
with the capture and confession
of Margarito Flores
as the sole perpetrator
of six of the seven murders.
After analyzing
new evidence and information,
we have come to the conclusion that
Margarito Flores did not act on his own.
What is he saying?
[Gerardo] Margarito Flores
was the unwitting pawn
of a true criminal mastermind.
The real Undresser of Tlalpan
is still out there somewhere.
He is ruthless,
he's intelligent,
and capable of manipulating
just about anyone,
as he did with the now deceased
Margarito Flores.
- He's lying to them.
- Calm down. Everybody, calm down.
For God's sake,
we arrested one of them already.
It's just a question of time
until we have the other one
locked behind bars too.
[flies buzzing]
[gasps]
[Emilio] This was Alma Álvarez,
the most recent victim
of The Undresser of Tlalpan,
born in Oaxaca.
And today her parents are in attendance.
[sighs]
- [flies buzzing]
- Oh, my God!
[both whimpering]
Oh, my God.
- Is that Andrés López?
- Yes.
[both panting]
- [María] And that's The Undresser's rope.
- Yeah.
[Emilio] The Undresser of Tlalpan is,
we believe, a religious vigilante.
At every single one of his crime scenes
were the same numbers.
One, six, nine, always in that sequence.
We hid this information from the public
in order to protect
the integrity of the investigation.
Did you know any of this?
[Emilio] The significance of
the numerical inscription is as follows.
In the first Book of Corinthians,
chapter 6, the ninth verse,
you'll find these words:
"Do you not know that evildoers
will not inherit the kingdom of God?
Do not be deceived, my dear brothers.
Neither the unclean,
nor the idolaters, nor the adulterers,
nor those who are greedy,
nor the drunkards, nor the slanderers,
will inherit the kingdom of God."
We know who you are,
and we know what you intend.
And we're going to catch you.
There are statements indicating that
Alma Álvarez was initially found alive
but died later at the hospital.
Who's that yelling back there?
Please, have a little respect,
for God's sake!
Friends of the press, please, we ask you
to calm down and remain in your seats.
[explosion]
- [people screaming]
- [alarm blaring]
[María] In the next episode
There's someone out there
who knows something.
And you're up by his side there,
doing nothing.
Goyo Cadenas is right.
The 169 isn't religious.
[Valentina] Goyo killed and then buried
four women in his garden, María.
What if he can help us find The Undresser?
