Guided by Toad, we animals of farthing wood had travelled far on the long journey to the safety of
White deer park sworn to protect one another. We had struggled bravely in the face of fire
and flood, but then we came to the river.
Once Toad has crossed, we'll all go into the water together, right? Good luck Toad.
Here we go! Let's go! The rabbit's panicked.
Stop it! We must save them!
Fox and I were swept away.
Wait!
Look!
Is that Badger?
It is! Badger! Badger!
Excuse me, but shouldn't somebody help him?
As I'll second that. Come on! What are we waiting for?
Oh, God the way though!
Come on! He's caught in the reeds! Is he alive?
Wait for me. Hold on, Badger! Hold on!
Oh, no, you don't!
Do what I do, Badger! Treadwater, see? It's easy! I can't!
He's not a toe, stupid!
Troy, Badger! You can do it! Watch me!
It's no good! I'm done for!
Save your breath for swimming if you please.
Swim? I couldn't swim now to save my life.
That's just what you will have to do, Badger.
Badger, come on! Come on! Don't give up!
You can do it! Is it free yet?
Not quite. Keep chewing. I'll help you, Badger.
That won't cure me!
Troy, get now!
Now, Hitcho, you push! Don't order me about.
Get on with it!
Hooray, he's a fly-teaser! Hooray!
Oh dear, oh dear!
Please don't give up on me now, Badger!
I know what he needs!
Oh, congratulations!
Oh, Badger, you're going to be all right!
You're going to be all right!
Hooray!
What are you crying for now?
You stupid, undersized seal.
What am I crying for?
Why, I'm happy, of course!
Ah, a silly question.
How's it, Fox?
Who knows?
Drowned, I should think!
Oh no.
I'm just trying to find a way to see what she can see.
But I wouldn't hold out any hopes if I were you.
It's all rabbits, Fult.
Oh, I swallowed so much water.
I think I
I know what he needs!
Serves you right.
Oh, sorry for what happened, I'm sure.
But we can all panic you know here, even you.
You're not perfect, although you seem to think so.
Oh, do be quiet.
Isn't there enough to trouble us without
qualleting amongst ourselves?
Come and rest, Badger.
Kestrel will be back with news of Fox very soon, I'm sure.
I hope you're right.
Thank you.
Try and sleep, Badger.
If Fox has drowned
Wait till Kestrel comes back then we'll know.
Is he asleep?
If he isn't, he's doing a very good impression of me.
Why are we going to do if Fox really is?
Lost.
Elect another leader, of course.
Fox, never named a successor.
Badger will lead us.
Who else?
I doubt if Badger's up to it after his latest experience.
I let the rescue party.
No, you didn't. I did.
Seems we have several pretenders to the throne.
A-O.
Pretenders?
They may be pretending.
I am not.
If I am required, I shall be occupied in a little discreet hunting.
Goodbye.
Come on, Mole.
Let's go back to the riverbank and cheer ourselves up with a few nice juicy worms.
What do you say?
Oh, I don't think I could eat.
Go on, matey, but you can.
Nice sketch, Owl.
I like your style.
Thank you, Adda.
I must say, your own technique is extremely efficient.
I get lots of practice.
Shame about Fox.
Badger as leader.
Too slow and stupid.
A bird would be a more sensible choice.
You meankiss-troll?
Kiss-troll? Oh, no, no.
She hasn't the common touch.
Whereasyou have.
What are you getting at, Adda?
Just raising you out.
Well, yes, you're right, of course.
All the animals trust you.
That's true, too.
And you're wise enough to know and someone's winding you up.
What? Are you saying?
I'm just saying.
How wise you are.
Kiss-troll?
Kiss-troll?
Kiss-troll?
Well, that's filled me up.
Now for some fun, matey, eh?
Why don't you try it?
Is it safe?
We'll be all right just so long as we stay near the riverbank.
I wish I could do that.
I'll show you how me eat. Watch me.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, no.
Oh, stop it.
You want to eat?
No, no, no.
Over here, matey.
Oh, I hope so.
Where does it come, matey?
What was it?
It's matey.
Nasty things, Pike.
Swole you all I could.
Thanks, matey.
Nasty things, Pike.
Don't mind if I snuggle down beside you, do you?
Who needs friends?
Kiss-troll?
Is that you?
Kiss-troll!
Did you find Fox?
Yes.
After a while I saw him clinging to some driftwood.
I kept sight of him for a long way.
There was a weird, but Fox came through it.
And then as the river broadened he floated on through pleasure boats and steamers until he reached a bridge.
What happened?
He floated underneath it, but when the driftwood came out the other side Fox was no longer on it.
Oh, no.
But surely, he can't just do, he's appeared.
I waited and waited. I even flew under the bridge and called for him. He wasn't there.
We've lost him forever.
I see.
But in that case, there's no point in waiting here any longer.
We must move on.
But what if Fox came back and we weren't here?
If Fox is alive.
Not very likely.
He'll find us.
Meanwhile I'm quite sure he would want us to continue on our journey.
Yes, your right I suppose. It's what he'd want.
If everyone ready?
Yes, Badger.
Good. Then let's be on our way.
Of course, Badger.
The teams we're all going to play at Follow My Leader, Owl.
Only Badger's the one that's leading.
Come on, my ears.
Heeey, grass is nice and springy here. Just like I remembered.
Sorry I'm so slow.
Not at all, Tody. The hairs are just enjoying themselves at all.
I don't know how they can.
Now don't take on Moliol thing.
We don't know Fox is dead.
Perhaps even now he's making his way back to us.
What? Sweet Mina, Rafa.
No harm in hoping we's all.
If I knew the rabbits hadn't panicked, that's enough, though.
It's the rabbit's fault. The rabbit's fault.
Oh dear, we're never going to live this down.
No, what's the matter with you?
I think I may have stepped on a thorn.
My poor will be so spurring up in less than an hour
that I won't be able to walk at all.
Will I, can't carry you?
Oh dear, I do feel tired.
Suppose I beat you.
Then everyone would be sorry for you.
No, thanks. I'm all right. Really?
Look at the hairs, enjoy themselves.
That isn't a hair, that's rabbit.
Good heaven, so it is.
What ever's got into him.
Shall I get down better?
No, no, no, no.
Cheer up, things aren't so bad.
We've come a long way, you know.
Yes, a long way from Farthingwood.
And a long way from Farthingwood to Farthingwood.
Only two bear up. Foxwood wanted to be like this, you know.
What's happened, Toady? I don't know.
Halt! Halt! Halt!
Halt! Something wrong?
No, no. We're all right so far.
It's just ajust a
Hold dear, oh dear, I don't know where it'll go next.
Have we taken a wrong turning?
No, no. I remembered everything. Clear as day.
As we came along.
Oh dear, I knew things would go wrong with our fox.
No, don't worry, Moly. I'll get us all there, safe and sound.
Toes just a bit. Confused, that's all.
Hmm, I don't know.
I feel sure we should go straight ahead.
Something keeps pulling me left.
Oh well.
All right, everyone. Moving on.
Moving on.
Moving on. Moving on. Moving on.
It's no good.
Halt! Halt! Halt!
It feels all wrong somehow.
I'm just not comfortable, mate, is.
The guide's lost!
Shall we try the other direction?
I don't know.
I'm not sure.
Shall we try the other direction?
I don't know, mate.
If you say so.
Moving on. Moving on.
Kestrel, can you scout ahead for us?
Willingly.
I don't know. Oh dear.
Done all right so far. I don't know.
Don't take on so total chat.
If you've made a mistake, no one's going to blame you.
Mrs. Bow, Mrs. Bow, I really don't think I can go on.
Seeing you as soon.
She says she can't go on.
It's terribly inconvenient, but I rather think I'm due for a happy event.
Stop mumbling, dear, and do get on.
Badger! Badger!
What is it, Owl?
You're going round in a circle.
Oh dear, mate, is I'm sorry? I'm sorry.
You're heading back to the river.
Oh dear, what could have happened?
No, let me think.
Oh, toad. You mustn't blame yourself.
Sorry, Owl. I forgot you were an
Thinking.
Typical. It's very simple, really.
Toads, homing instinct has come into play. That's all.
My homing instinct?
That's correct. Just as it did when you were captured and taken far away.
It led you back to your birthplace in Farthingwood then, and it's doing so now.
Oh dear, I am sorry.
So, what do you suggest we do now, Owl?
Retrace our steps, of course.
Retrace our steps?
Oh, I don't think I can.
But how will Toad be able to lead us to wipe to their park?
He has his memory just so long as he ignores his instinct and goes by what he sees and remembers along the way.
Kestrel and I will help.
Thank you, Owl. I don't know where we'd be without you.
Back in Farthingwood, I expect.
Seems we've been led astray.
BEE BEE!
Or did you see Kestrel?
The other way is Scrubland and a few birch trees.
That's right. I remember it now.
There was a lot of Scrubland.
Good. Well, shall we move on?
Excuse me?
What is it here?
There's been a happy event.
A happy event?
Don't you even know what that means?
You lead us around in a circle wearing us all out?
I'll second that.
And you don't even know what a happy event is.
The Field Mice had had babies, of course.
Babies! How lovely!
Delicious, Ayada!
Weasel, the Oath!
She wouldn't have dared say that if Fox were still here.
True. True.
So, what do we do now, Badger?
Perhaps it's time we all had a rest.
It is growing near nightfall, after all.
And what are we supposed to use for cover?
Oh, we just have to find what cover we can.
It's so difficult travelling with babies.
I know just what you mean.
If only they'd stop crying.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could find a home here,
instead of going on to White Deir Park?
None of this would have happened in Fox's time.
It's not Badger's fault he's doing his best.
And how are we supposed to travel with a lot of baby mice?
We go slowly enough as it is.
Oath as it is, Oath shall advise Badger to leave the mice behind.
Seems a pity.
I love little babies.
I bet you do!
The Oath, Adder.
The Oath.
I'm sorry, matey. It's all my fault.
Not a tall old thing.
It was your instinct.
And now, babies.
If we were to White Deir Park, I'd be pleased.
But on the journey, what shall we do?
I think the mice might want to stay behind.
Well, I'm not going to let them.
Look what happens on the nutes.
And yet how can we go on with the matey?
By oldeness up, they'd endanger the rest of us.
I wonder what Fox would do.
Do you think we'll ever see him again, Badger?
He'll make his way back to us if he can, Moly.
Meanwhile, we'll have to make the best of it.
If only I knew what to do.
Look, a fox.
Hey, you! Give her a Fox on board.
