Frances: We're starting to see
some small variations
in Alexander's signal.
-[groans]
And once the nanites achieve
symbiosis in the brain,
the fatality rate
is a hundred percent.
Alexander: I think
we should call this off.
-Let's just talk about this.
-We didn't tell him
to do that.
Please don't run.
The only way I know
how to connect
to him is through you.
Moira: Lone wolf
thinks Mosaic's drive
identifies them as the one
who placed the mole
in The Orphanage.
-You don't want the target
to know exactly where it is yet.
-Our enemy
can't be ahead of us.
You will lead them to it.
-It's a Faraday cage
for the drive.
In case it's being tracked.
[grunts]
-How'd you know
he didn't have the drive, huh?
-Because I was watching
through your eyes,
Alexander.
-I still believe
in the mission.
But I'm not doing it
The Orphanage's way.
I know you'll understand,
my friend.
-If you were gonna shoot me,
you'd've done it already.
But you know
I'm the only one
that can answer
your questions.
So, let's talk.
[siren wailing]
[blowing whistle]
[running footsteps]
[♪♪♪]
[soldiers panting]
[speaking German]
[gasps]
-Did you get it?
-The file was unguarded
for thirty minutes.
I, uh, copied it.
-Are you sure it's real?
-I'm sure.
The address for every
KGB agent in West Berlin.
[sighs]
-When can I have it?
-Did
the Americans
agree?
-Yes, yes, they've been
very impressed with
what you've provided so far.
-So then they will
get me Visa?
-Yes. Someone is coming
to extract you,
first to the UK
and then after that,
yes, she will send you
to the States
with a new identity.
You'll be an American.
-Okay, when?
-Tomorrow.
-Who-- Who should I
expect to come?
-Never say it out loud.
[♪♪♪]
[speaking German]
[♪♪♪]
-Wis-con-sin.
Wiscon-sin.
Wisconsin.
[crowd chanting indistinctly]
[chanting continues]
[reporter speaking German]
[crowd cheering]
[man speaking German]
[banging on door]
[pants]
[door opens]
[speaking German]
[screams]
[grunts]
[screaming]
[theme music playing]
-Who are you?
-Oh, dear.
Down to business already.
-Answer.
[sighs]
-My name is Schiff.
-And who do you
work for, Schiff?
-I work alone.
I've had my fill
of governments and agencies.
Now I just play them against
each other whenever possible.
-Were you the one
that hacked me?
-When did you figure it out?
Slovakia? Bookstore?
-Really bothers you
that you don't know, doesn't it?
-[chuckles] Hmm.
-How do I get it out
of my head?
-There's no way to remove it.
No cure. No antidote.
And it never stops
broadcasting.
Ever.
-[sighs]
-We've already established
you're not gonna kill me.
-Yeah, you're right.
But I'm happy to shoot you
somewhere it hurts.
-You can't risk me
passing out from the pain
or losing too much blood.
Answers are
too important to you.
-Tell me why you chose me!
-Now, there's a good question.
The question, really.
We'll circle back
to that later.
-You're gonna tell me
what I wanna know
or I'm gonna make you suffer
and then you're gonna
tell me anyway.
-Did they give you
the un-redacted file
about the Cassandra tech
in your head?
The full story?
The Orphanage
never told you
about the tech destroying
your mind, did they?
No one has ever made it
past six months
without complete and total
mental collapse or death.
-You're lying.
-Am I?
Have the side effects
started yet?
The pillowing lights,
ringing in your ears,
little blips of losing time?
Once that starts,
you're in the end game.
Your brain
will start seizing.
The un-redacted file
is over there.
Read it.
See if I can be believed.
[♪♪♪]
-You just happened
to have this with you?
-You were hoping to talk to me,
I was hoping to talk to you.
[indistinct radio chatter]
[suspenseful music playing]
[door opens]
-Forty-two minutes
since he went dark.
If we haven't caught sight
of him now, he's probably--
-Underground.
We're scanning.
-There's miles and miles
of catacombs.
He could be anywhere.
-[laughs]
-Agreed.
-These are the six
most likely scenarios.
These first four are
if Alexander was able
to make contact
with our lone wolf,
and these two are
if he hasn't located him yet.
I'm drawing up
a decision matrix--
-We all missed it.
Our target outplayed us.
It's not your fault.
-[sighs] Wanna bet?
I knew he was going
off mission.
He broke up with Michelle
right before he left.
I think he figured out
that we were
manipulating him through her.
I didn't give you
all the information.
[sighing]
-You took a risk.
It blew up.
There'll be plenty of time
for me to yell at you
after we find him.
-I'm sorry.
[sniffles]
I knew that you would
abort the mission
and I couldn't stop.
I made the wrong call.
[♪♪♪]
-Samantha.
I need you to put it aside.
Just for now.
Focus on what comes next.
Be ready for this one.
The longer he's dark,
the more of a certainty
it becomes.
[♪♪♪]
-You could've edited this.
-Does make you wonder, though.
Why did
the Department of Defense
shut the program down?
Why not keep trying?
Why mothball it?
You've always known
deep down, haven't you?
They kept the truth from you.
-However flawed
The Orphanage might be,
I would still
never work for you.
You stole my life!
So, unless you have any other
documents for me to read,
we're taking
the long way home.
-Your mother's.
I didn't want you
to read the file
so that I could flip you.
I already have all the leverage
I need for that.
I just wanted to remind you
how little The Orphanage cares
about individual lives
like yours.
Or like Helen
and Preston Hale.
[grunts]
[groans]
-What did you do?
Answer me!
[pants]
-I've placed people
in their everyday life.
People very close to them
that I control.
If I give the order,
your parents are dead.
If I don't check in regularly,
the kill order
becomes automatic.
You really don't want anything
to happen to me.
[grunts]
[Schiff sighs]
From now on,
you're gonna do
exactly what I say.
Let's start with the gun.
[pants]
You're gonna
walk out of here,
tell them you lost me
in the catacombs,
and then go home.
And then you're gonna
help me find the ghost
that I've been hunting for
a long time.
St. George:
Frederick Schiff.
An American citizen
by birthright,
but without any papers.
No connection to his family.
We used his desire
to meet his American father
to manipulate him.
I was going
to retrieve him myself.
In exchange for intel
about KGB agents.
But then the world
turned upside down.
The KGB was pulling out.
He was no longer
valuable to us.
-Do you know
what he might want?
-Yes.
Schiff: I wanna know
who St. George is.
And you can lead me
right to her.
-And how am I
supposed to do that?
-You're their most
important operative,
you can find a way.
-Why her?
-She promised me
something.
But it was all lies.
She stole my life.
So, I wanna be looking
in her eyes
when she realizes that
I'm the one
who's gonna kill her.
Afterwards,
I'll simply disappear.
Your parents will be safe,
you'll have the chance to run.
You'll never see me again.
-They're gonna think
that I've been flipped.
-Then you better be
a very good spy, Alexander.
The Orphanage
will try to convince you
that you belong.
But you never will.
Do you really think
they would hesitate
to let your parents die
if it meant catching me?
I'll give you a day.
But by 10 p.m. tomorrow,
you will go through with it.
Clock is ticking.
[air hissing]
Just so they can find you!
It really is
a maze down here.
You know how to reach me.
[grunting]
ground agent:
Over here! Over here!
Where's the target?
We followed
the heat signature
from the steam vent
to Osiris.
Target is not here.
Target is loose.
[tense music playing]
-Ellie?
We have eight hours
until he's home.
Have Frances wire
his apartment.
I wanna know everything
that's going on in there.
-I thought
we can't bug his place?
Because if the enemy finds out,
it means we're onto the hack.
-We have to take
that risk now.
[line ringing]
[♪♪♪]
[line continues ringing]
[line beeps]
[♪♪♪]
Marlowe:
We now have an answer.
We were looking
for one person.
We should've
been looking for three.
This is Frederick Schiff.
Born 1964
in Salzwedel, Germany.
His mother, Ukrainian.
Died in childbirth.
His father,
an American serviceman
stationed in West Germany
who never met his son.
Schiff grew up
in East Berlin
and served three years
in a Stasi listening post.
At some point, he began
spying on his own country
and passing intel
to American intelligence.
Records show he applied
for asylum in the US.
It was declined.
He was then discovered
and shipped to a Soviet gulag
where he apparently
died of exposure.
He didn't stay dead long.
This is Eric Khomyuck.
A more grown-up
Frederick Schiff
using his grandmother's
maiden name.
Khomyuck emerged
seemingly without a past.
A ruthless GRU officer
rising through the ranks
of post-Soviet Russia.
Using a proxy
paramilitary group,
the Brits eliminated him.
Or so they thought.
He was reborn
with a new identity,
carefully crafted.
Schiff became Henry Goldman.
He has been working
as a contractor
for various countries
since 2002.
Including ours.
He has clearance
with the CIA and the NSA.
And he currently consults
for the Director
of National Intelligence.
He's very well-connected.
-How'd he get his hands
on the Cassandra technology?
-One of his close associates
is Werner Comstock,
who first pioneered
the nanite technology
Cassandra is built on.
Werner Comstock died
five months ago.
Terrible accident.
Drowning.
-Is there a connection
between Werner Comstock,
Schiff, and the chemist?
Marlowe: We'll never know.
The chemist also just died
of a terrible accident.
Overdose.
But Schiff's listening station
that processes the intel
from the hack
is located
in the former USSR.
But he lives here in DC.
Thirteen miles away.
He cleaned his place out
before he left for Paris.
Wasn't planning to return.
-Thirteen miles.
-Oh, it gets worse.
"Goldman"
is his father's name.
The American side
of his family.
One of his half-siblings
is a woman named Ellen,
who, forty years ago,
married a man
with the last name "Cobb."
They had one son.
Edmund.
-Cobb is his nephew.
Marlowe: They've been
in regular contact.
There's a chance Cobb
was either working with him
or being manipulated by him.
Could be why Cobb
went to the CIA.
-We have confirmation
it was him?
Marlowe: He's at Langley
under their protection.
It was him.
-Except Schiff didn't want
the CIA to be there.
He wanted the drive.
Cobb did that on his own.
And if Cobb
was working with Schiff,
he wouldn't have hidden
that intel to save Poseidon.
Cobb didn't know about
the ambush in Slovakia
before it happened.
-So, Cobb goes rogue
and brings the CIA in
on his own. Why?
-Because he was right
about the mole.
How do we wanna play it?
-We keep the show going.
We don't let on
we know about Schiff.
Instead, we consider
the mission a failure
because we didn't
find the drive
and we follow the procedures
after a failed op.
Hale arrives in one hour.
And then I'll need to know
what he's really thinking.
Marlowe: Why did you
pursue the target
despite the order to abort?
Alexander: Because I knew
where he was going
and I didn't want him
to get away.
Marlowe:
Where's the drive?
-I gave it to another agent.
Edmund Cobb.
Marlowe: What happened next?
Alexander: I was able to track
the assailant down
into a network of tunnels.
[cell phone buzzing]
I searched
for about 45 minutes.
At one point, I saw
a figure running ahead of me
and I assumed it was him.
I chased after him
and I fired my gun,
but he got away.
Ellie: You received this
from Director Moira's office
ten minutes ago.
I guess they're doing
an internal review.
All of our security clearances
are being held
until it's completed.
They must think we have a leak
somewhere in the chain.
Secure briefing in ten.
Moira: What does
our enemy know?
-He only knows
that I realized
he wasn't
the extraction agent.
He doesn't have the drive,
so he doesn't have any reason
to suspect that
we set a trap for him.
And he doesn't know
that we know about the hack.
Claymore's safe.
Did you find out who he is?
-Yes. Why did you knock out
The Orphanage agents?
-Lone wolf
was getting away
and I couldn't
let that happen.
Moira:
What happened to Remy?
Alexander: Lone wolf had
a paralytic agent.
Like us.
He must've gotten close enough
to Remy to use it.
I assumed
you'd all be able to see it.
-Our shot
was partially occluded.
-Hmm.
-You know what part
I don't get?
You and Remy
were the only people
that got a good look at him.
And then you followed him down
into a dark tunnel system.
He could've ambushed you
at any time.
Why let you live?
-I assumed it was
because he wanted
to keep the hack open.
Keep seeing through my eyes.
-Why'd you break up
with Michelle?
[chuckles]
-Um--
Couples fight.
It's unrealistic to assume
that we'd be any different.
-On-again,
off-again sorta thing?
-Yeah.
-Did you make contact
with Schiff?
-Is that his name?
The target?
-Did you make contact?
-No, sir. I didn't.
-I wanna be clear about
something, Alexander Hale.
This is the one room
in the world
where I can help you.
If you have anything
to say to us, now's the time.
-I didn't make contact.
And I'm not lying to you.
[♪♪♪]
-Did he threaten you?
Someone close to you?
We can help.
-I couldn't find him.
He got away. That's all.
-Shit.
Alexander: What do you
want me to do now?
-Go home.
Get some rest.
-He's lying.
[♪♪♪]
[sighs]
[sniffles]
[sighs]
-Hey.
-Hi.
They need your keys back.
Standard operating procedure.
Sorry.
-Of course.
[♪♪♪]
[♪♪♪]
Moira: Watch him.
He might still
lead us to Schiff.
Parker: It doesn't make sense
that he would flip.
It doesn't sound like
the person he is at all.
Moira:
And at the end of the day,
it doesn't really matter
why he flipped,
all that matters is
what Schiff told him to do.
If he wanted to hurt us,
Hale is the best way to do that.
He is walking evidence
of a decision that we made
to compromise national security.
No one can ever find out.
-And if we're wrong about him?
-Do you think we're wrong?
-[Parker sighs]
-I mean-- I-- I-- I-- I--
I can’t tell.
-Watch him
very, very closely,
and if you see evidence that
he is colluding with the enemy,
be prepared
to give the kill order.
Verbal confirmation
of the conditions
of the kill order, please.
-Conditions understood.
[suspenseful music playing]
[feedback buzzing]
[groans]
[horn honking]
-Sorry.
I thought you were--
I found a few things of yours.
I wanted to drop them off
in the most dramatic way
possible.
This works.
Trip good?
-Yeah.
-There's a few things
of mine in there.
Do you mind if I grab them?
Unless you're afraid
I'm gonna do something crazy.
[keys jingling]
Thanks.
Aren't you going
to shut the door?
-So, where's the stuff
you need?
-Bedroom.
-Let me just pick up
a bit first.
-An unkept bedroom.
You've changed.
[suspenseful music playing]
[♪♪♪]
[machine whirring]
Sorry.
I figured instead of
taking my coffee back
like a petty person,
we could just drink it.
Maybe sit and talk?
-Maybe some other time.
I think I'm comin' down
with something.
-Yeah. Yeah. Sure.
Whenever.
I mean, no rush.
I'm gonna go grab my stuff.
[cell phone buzzing]
Take it.
I'll be in there.
-Hey, everything okay?
Helen [over phone]:
So, you're alive!
Preston, he's alive.
Preston: Great!
-Mom, now's not really
a good time.
Helen: I know, I know,
it's a bad time.
It's always a bad time.
So, we're just coming
because it's never
a good time anyway.
-No, Mom,
you cannot come here.
-Well, we're already here.
How far away are we?
Preston:
Uh, fifteen minutes.
Yeah, Victor
invited us for lunch.
I was gonna call
and tell you but--
Helen: But it was a bad time
for you to answer.
-Sorry, I'm just not
feeling well right now.
Helen: Oh, well, that's okay.
Uh, I'll come make food
for you there--
-Uh, I-- [sighs]
Helen: We'll stay in.
-No, you know what?
We'll go to Victor's, okay?
I'll see you there.
-If you're not feeling well,
I can--
-Mom! I'm not asking.
-[sighs]
Don't be so touchy--
-I'll see you there
soon, okay?
-Okay, Alexander,
I hear you.
[sighs]
-Sounds like I almost
got to meet the family.
[sighs] I got my stuff.
I'll get out of your way.
-Yeah.
-That book you gave me
I started reading it.
It was surprising.
In a good way.
-I'm glad you liked it.
-Yeah.
Sorry you're not feeling well.
If you need soup
or anything
I make good soup.
And I watch out
for the people
that I care about.
-Thank you.
[♪♪♪]
[door closes]
[sighs]
-You called the meeting,
you should probably speak first.
-I'm meditating.
To help control my temper.
-We received
high-level intelligence
that an operative of yours
was compromised,
which is ironic given
the nature of your organization.
Alexander Hale entered
the CIA sphere,
so we moved to collect him.
It's regrettable that it affects
an operation of yours.
Perhaps in the future,
you could warn us
what you're up to
so we can be
on the same page.
Be better partners to you.
-What a generous offer.
-Well, thank you
for considering it.
As for this unfortunate event,
it is my understanding
that the only fire
that was traded
was between Hale and our guys.
And no one
was seriously hurt,
so it seems like something
that we could all move past.
After all, we were just trying
to help you with your problem.
-And it's so appreciated.
But there's no problem
to be solved.
We looked into it.
You got bad intel.
-So, it's not true?
You're not protecting
the leak in your house?
-Why on earth
would we do that?
-I'm relieved to hear it.
-Let's hope
this never happens again.
-Let's hope.
[indistinct chatter]
[soft jazz music playing]
-Hi. I'd like to sit
at the bar, please.
-I can take that.
-Little to the left.
I wanna be able
to see his face.
Helen: That doesn't look like
very much food.
Preston:
No, it doesn't, does it?
Gotta talk to Victor
about that.
-Are you okay?
-Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine.
-I'm just worried about you.
You work too much.
-I'm fine, really.
I'm gonna pop in
and say hi to Victor.
-Really? I--
-Yeah.
-You didn't even
touch your food--
-Your food's gonna get cold--
-It's okay.
-It's three bites!
Victor: Oh.
Lunch okay?
How was your trip?
-Got in late last night.
-Oh, you must be exhausted.
-Yeah.
-Come, help me
with the flour.
[indistinct chatter]
-I have to talk to you
about something.
Maybe we go for a walk?
Chef: Order up.
-Okay. [chuckles]
Health inspectors.
Yeah, they came here
yesterday, unscheduled.
So, we swept the place
this morning.
They had bugged it,
but we disabled them.
It's clean, but,
I mean, I assume
this was Orphanage.
What's going on?
[sighs]
-I think they're looking
into me again.
Paris trip
didn't go as planned.
Victor, I've never asked you
for anything like this,
but I need to speak
to St. George.
Directly.
-[sighs]
-I know you used
to work with her.
I need to speak to her.
Out of the office.
And I need you to trust
that I have to do this.
-[chuckles]
-Can you find her?
-No.
She's impossible to find.
A ghost.
Unless
you're one of a handful
of people in the world
who knows she was married
and who she was married to.
How long do you have?
-Only until ten tonight.
[sighs]
-Well-- Pff.
Okay, I'll-- I'll-- I mean,
I-- I'll make a few calls
and when I know something
I'll get in touch.
-Thank you.
-Yeah.
-I have to go home
in case I run out of time.
-Yeah.
-I don't want my parents
to s-see anything.
-N-No-- No, no, no,
I'll keep them here.
-Thank you.
-Always.
-Hey, I'm sorry, guys,
but something
just came up at work.
I have to go.
-What?
-What?
-Oh, come on.
Finish a meal with us.
-Honey
-Come on, what're you doing?
-No, I--
I wish could, really.
Just enjoy yourselves.
Victor will be here soon.
-[sighs] We drove
all this way to see you.
-I know. And I will
make it up to you.
[speaking Hakka Chinese]
[♪♪♪]
-What'd he just say?
-Hold on.
That wasn't Mandarin.
Preston:
Come on, Alexander.
We speak English here.
-Just say it back.
One time.
-Say it, Preston.
[speaking Hakka Chinese]
[speaking Hakka Chinese]
-[in English]
I know, Mom.
I know.
Just stay here, okay?
-Okay.
-I'll see you soon.
Helen: Right.
-Okay. It's Hakka.
A southern dialect.
He said, "I love you."
They said,
"I love you" back.
[♪♪♪]
-Thank you for coming.
-I assume you reached out
because you want
a way back in.
-No.
I fucked up.
The man Alexander's
been pursuing is my uncle.
Henry Goldman. He's a
security consultant.
Although,
I'm starting to think
everything I know
about him is a lie.
-And?
-And
I told him I suspected
a leak in The Orphanage.
I didn't say who,
but, occasionally,
over the last few years,
he would ask me questions
about who runs The Orphanage.
He asked me about
the name St. George.
I confirmed that the name
was still active,
even though I didn't know
anyone who'd ever met her.
I think he was fishing
for information.
Anyway, I wanted
to tell you this
in case it could help
with whatever he's after.
-Thank you, Cobb.
-I never handed it over
to the CIA.
I have a friend at the NSA.
Called in one last favor.
He decrypted it.
It's completely full
of dummy data.
Why would The Orphanage
carry out
a high-risk
international operation
for a worthless hard drive?
-We probably should've
just brought you in
from the beginning.
But we didn't.
And now you're on
the other side of the street.
I'd stay there if I was you.
-You're not gonna kill me?
Why Cassandra
RU-two-five-eight?
You can see the file structure
without decrypting it.
It's like an index.
Part of the bait,
I assume?
There's a folder in there,
"Cassandra RU-two-five-eight."
An old DOD hacking program.
-I think
the better question is:
why did Alexander,
someone you thought
was betraying his country,
jump in front of a bullet
to save your life?
[suspenseful music playing]
[♪♪♪]
-Hey.
-Don't freak out.
I forgot I still had
your spare key.
Now it's there
on the table.
But like I said earlier,
I make a mean
chicken noodle.
-You didn't have to do that.
-I know.
Look, just to clarify
it's over.
No lingering feelings.
Everybody moves on.
And I'm just
someone in your kitchen
making good soup.
I'm only here
to watch out for you.
Anything you need.
-Thanks.
-Soup in twenty!
[♪♪♪]
[sighs]
-I'm ready.
I'll do what you asked.
As soon as Victor
comes through,
I'll lead you to St. George.
-Did he say he'd lead them
to St. George?
[♪♪♪]
-Get Director Moira, please.
Ellie: We need you
down here, sir.
