The F Ward (2026) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

1
[Gloria] Lights and power
are not guaranteed,
so you work with what you've got
and you'll survive.
- Do you mind?
- [Gloria] Why is Friedman here?
- Where are you supposed to be?
- Uh, Dr. Wall's post-ops.
[Gloria]
And since when is he working at
what I clearly remember him
referring to
as a beachside cadaver factory?
Since today.
[Gloria] I've been having
sexual relations
with an intern.
I'm willing to face
any consequence
that comes my way
for what I've done.
I'm asking both of you,
can you work together?
Yeah, of course we can.
Turns out screwing the boss
still has its perks.
- [Distant siren]
- [Percussive music]
- [Curtis] Morning, mate.
- Hey. Hey.
How was the surf?
Ah, it was all right.
Six out of ten.
It's good to get wet.
One of those for me?
- Uh, no, not for you, sorry.
- Oh.
- How's the ticker going?
- Yep, it's all good.
- Hey, Ellie.
- [Curtis] You get the defib?
- Uh, don't need it.
- What are you talking about?
Jeez, Jimmy. You're a doctor.
Chill, all right?
I'm on the meds.
Defib implant is in a few weeks.
[Curtis] Very good.
- Hello.
- [Ellie] Hey.
[Jimmy] I bought you a KeepCup.
'Cause I know you don't like
single-use plastics.
- Uh, that's true. I don't.
- [Jimmy] Yeah.
Um, is that colour-coded?
Yeah, I figure we can get
a couple more hours in
before the first test if
we study from now until lunch.
Sounds like fun.
[Knocks on door]
[Gloria] Hey, have you got
a minute?
- Sure.
- [Gloria] Thanks.
- Can I
- [Anita] Mm.
Just so we avoid any appearance
of a conflict of interest,
I was thinking that I should
probably recuse myself
from assessing Dr. Seufale
in the mid-terms.
What, you don't think I need to?
Oh, no. II do.
The Medical Board felt the same,
actually, only more so.
Obviously you triggered
an ethical review
when you disclosed you were
having a sexual relationship
with an intern
you were training.
[Gloria] Mm-hm.
The board has suspended
your accreditation
as a training supervisor.
They're bringing an external in.
You won't be assessing
any of them.
[Percussive music]
- [Heart monitor beeps]
- [Thudding]
[Lisa] They're so good. I make
them all the time for my kids.
- Do you guys all eat gluten?
- [Yosef] ..renal function.
Wait, so "nephrotic" is
No, no, no, wait. "Nephritic"
is inflammation? Nephritic?
Yeah, nephritic is the one
with the haematuria.
Okay, so they just changed
one letter.
- Nephritic. Nephro
- [Ellie] Yeah, that's right.
- Just try and think of like
- [Jimmy] Anyone want a drink?
- No, I'm fine.
- [Microwave beeps]
Try and think of it
like a mnemonic.
So, nephrotic - nephro - frothy.
Nephritic - itic - inflammation.
- [Others laugh]
- [Jimmy] I'm sorry.
I'm sorry. Come on, El.
All right, we'll be fine.
Don't stress.
[Milk frother hisses]
Excuse me,
are the crepes gluten-free?
[Server] Uh, don't think so.
Sorry.
Stay away from the Danishes.
They're 95% horse glue.
- [Chuckles] Geoffrey.
- Dennis.
- What brings you up here?
- Ah, VMO. For my sins.
Ah. They could use all the help
they could get around here.
You'll find out where the bodies
are buried in the Fuck-Up Ward?
They're actually quite
a competent group this year.
Really?
Not what I've heard.
- What have you heard?
- Oh, look. I
I don't want
to talk out of turn.
I mean, ask around.
Nurses. HR maybe.
I'd just be more comfortable if
you did your own investigation.
The friands are edible.
[Intriguing music]
[Dennis] So you might think
that this is just
a box-check exercise,
a rubber stamp,
and for regular interns,
uh, yeah, it would be.
But with you guys,
that is not the case.
A fail on a single one
of your mid-term
assessment modules
means you fail
to qualify as doctors.
Seven years of medical school,
they're just straight
down the tube.
Yeah, Dennis, we've already
been through all of this.
Sudden death, as it were.
That normally goes down a bit
better around here. [Chuckles]
Um, okay.
So there are two oral tests,
then there is a practical module
where I will be observing you
as you treat patients
and you're gonna be tested
in teams
so we can assess
your clinical communication
and coordination as well.
Uh, Jimmy "Seafail"?
- Seufale.
- Yep.
You will be with Ellie O'Neill.
Here.
[Dennis] And Lisa "Jurassic".
- Ju
- Juracek.
You are going to be
with Josh Wilson.
[Gloria] He's
[Dennis] You're looking like
you're not Josh Wilson?
No, Josh isn't here.
He's suspended without pay.
That's not, uh, reflected
in the in the board records.
I don't know what
you want me to say.
Does that mean he can
still sit the assessment?
- [Gloria] No.
- Technically, yes.
That's a no.
But we will just go
with Lisa Juracek with
Uh Oh, right. Yosef Perera.
- That's you. Okay.
- That's me.
You two together. Okay.
Let us start with you two.
- You guys can scram.
- Yes, let's. [Clears throat]
They're not regulation.
[Dennis exhales]
- [Phones ring]
- [Sighs]
Trish. Trish. Trish.
Um, I can't seem to find
my 6am bloods on the system
and there's, like, no one here.
Tubes are stuffed. Possum
nesting in there or something.
A what?
- A possum.
- Jesus. Um
Well, that's gonna completely
mess up my morning list.
Talk to Pathology.
Uh, well, yeah, II would,
but there's nobody here.
What is going on in this place?
32-year-old woman,
28 weeks pregnant.
Presents to Emergency with
sudden onset severe headache,
blurred vision, epigastric pain.
Blood pressure, 170 over 110.
Severe pre-eclampsia.
Uh, got to get her BP down
and prepare for a potential,
uh, emergency delivery.
[Scoffs] No, we need
to follow guidelines
for hypertensive disorders
in pregnancy.
First, establish
exact onset times,
check previous BP readings
We don't have time
for history, all right?
IV access. Magnesium sulfate
for seizure risk.
We cannot just start magnesium
without first checking
contraindications.
- Renal function, reflexes
- Can be done simultaneously.
Okay, the priority is to
prevent an eclamptic fit.
Yeah, and what if she has,
you know, myasthenia gravis?
Oh, what if she has a stroke
because you're too busy
checking every box on your list?
People die when doctors
think they know better
than evidence-based rules.
People die when doctors are
too paralysed by rules to act.
That's what got you
sent here, right?
What?
You didn't follow proper
treatment protocols?
I saved someone's life, actually.
I performed pericardiocentesis
on a patient who would have died
if it wasn't for my help.
You might have heard
of the case.
[Dennis] I'm aware of the case.
Didn't know it was you.
You know it?
It was reckless and
an insane overreach for a JMO.
It is a complete miracle
that your patient survived.
Still saved their life.
[Jimmy exhales]
Man, I know
clinical pathologists
who are more fun than that guy.
[Ellie] Jimmy.
[Jimmy] What?
Why aren't you taking
this seriously?
We'll pass. It's not a big deal.
This is the biggest deal.
- This is our last chance.
- Mm-hm.
You don't think about
consequences.
Not true. I just
I just take a much more
philosophical approach.
Just not uptight,
Ellie, that's all.
Right.
Well, I am uptight.
That's who I am.
- Mm-hm.
- I'm here to be a doctor, Jimmy.
- So am I.
- Not to muck around.
I think this was a mistake.
What are you saying?
[Sober music]
Maybe
Maybe we're a mistake.
- [Electricity fizzles]
- [Medical staff exclaim]
[Staff member] Why?!
[Gloria] All right, everyone.
Let's hold.
- [Switch thuds]
- [Instrument clatters]
[Gloria] Oh, God, sorry.
- That was the last Harrison.
- [Gloria] Hmm?
Yeah, in the whole hospital?
Can you please go and get one?
Uh, that that was it.
Ali, how can you let
this happen?
I was told we'd maxxed out
on our budget for the quarter.
[Gloria] For fuck's sake!
For fuck
How am I supposed to do
my fucking job
if I can't even get
the tools I need?
[Ali] I've got a mosquito
or a Sawtell?
[Gloria] Well, neither, really.
Okay, come on.
We've not got the time for this.
I don't know what
I'm supposed to do about that.
Anyway, talk to you later.
- Oh, this fucking place.
- [Curtis] What's it done now?
It's just the bureaucracy
is killing me.
The response to my application
to extend the JMO program,
um, is three months overdue.
The hospital budget
can barely stretch to,
like, more than basic tools
and my pre-op bloods
are coagulating in the chutes
because of a possum
or some shit.
And then halfway
through training them,
I'm not even allowed
to assess my own trainees.
[Curtis] You know what?
It's gonna be okay.
I'm sure they're gonna
renew your program.
You've worked so long and
and so hard for it
and you've prevented
so many doctors
from dropping out of the system.
- It's gonna be okay.
- [Sniffles] Yeah. And Josh?
- I'm sure you had your reasons.
- [Gloria sighs]
Thank you.
I honestly don't know
what I'd do without you.
It's gonna be all right.
It's gonna be all right.
Hello Trish.
I'm the board assessor on
the provisional JMOs program.
What are your thoughts
on this group of interns?
Keep walking, Dennis.
I don't snitch to the board.
[Dennis] Um
[Nicola] Mm, it's buggered.
A possum got into it.
- Oh.
- [Nicola] Yeah.
So I haven't seen you
since the party.
Yeah, we've had the mid-terms,
so it's been stressy.
Mm, yeah, Dr. Juracek.
[Chuckles]
- I guess I was wondering.
- Mm?
Why'd Josh say that
you wanted to kiss me?
I don't know. Josh says
all kinds of silly things.
- So you don't?
- What?
Wanna kiss me?
Well, I didn't say that.
Oh! Oh, my God. Like, love this.
Love you two. Love, love.
But after work, please.
[Playful percussive music]
[Dennis] And these
all involve F Ward staff?
Oh, we don't use that term.
It's quite derogatory.
- And so we
- They seem to like it.
Explain to me
how all this works.
So when a complaint
or incident is lodged,
it automatically generates
a new incident ticket here.
We then meet with the staff
members or members involved,
decide on an appropriate
course of action,
and then my office reviews it.
And then what happens?
Well, each report is flagged
for Anita's approval.
She has to press a button,
which authorises it to publish
from the local Pending column
across to the statewide system.
[Dennis] And so
Oh, she hasn't pushed
the button.
[Softly] Right.
[Gloria] Dennis.
How did they go?
[Dennis] Uh, you should know,
I have found a series
of disturbing breaches
in the HR records,
which Anita then
never actually submitted.
Oh. Doesn't sound right.
[Dennis] Uh, let's see.
Uh, a privacy invasion.
JMOs sharing a photograph
of a patient's genitals.
Uh, illegal drug taking.
Participation in a sexual
relationship at the workplace.
Not you. Another one.
And I have quite
serious questions
around why the GM didn't share
those reports with the board.
Okay, well, granted,
we're not perfect,
but here in the real world,
in a training hospital,
it is not uncommon to have
basically a string
[Dennis] Of breaches?
No, of innocent mistakes.
And that should not
disqualify them
or have any effect on
their assessment whatsoever.
That's not really fair.
Except, uh, for the fact that
as their accredited assessor,
I have full discretion to take
into account their broad conduct
and to fail them
on their suitability
to be a medical practitioner.
[Grim music]
[Waves crash]
[Screams]
Arghh!
[Exhales]
[Jimmy] That bad, huh?
[Pops open drink can]
Thanks.
[Jimmy sighs]
You know sometimes
when you just feel
like the system's
working completely against you
and it's literally impossible
to take care of people?
It's like that.
[Drink can opens]
You okay?
I don't wanna talk about it.
So what are you doing here?
Don't wanna talk
about it either.
[Gloria] Oh.
You know, for what it's worth,
I totally stand by
how I've treated you
and the other interns.
I do. I really believe
in the F Ward.
You call it that too, huh?
I do. It makes the best doctors.
'Cause you make mistakes
and that's humbling.
You know, contrary to what
they teach you at med school
[Sighs]
you're not God
and you shouldn't be expected
to act like it.
I've learned a lot from you.
We'll see.
It's been fun.
- Maybe in another lifetime, hm?
- [Jimmy chuckles]
[Pensive music]
Well, look who it is.
- Oh, fuck off, Geoffrey.
- [Chuckles]
No, no, that stunt you pulled
getting Josh arrested.
I mean, what are you
trying to do?
Are you trying to ruin
your son's life?
Says the woman who threw him
out of his internship, sorry?
No, I gave him a second chance
and he fucked it up.
- That's on him.
- Well, just so we're clear.
It's because of you he hates me.
- What?
- Yeah.
No, your misgivings as a father,
that's on that's on you.
Don't even try with
that one, Geoffrey.
[Geoffrey] I had
a good chat with Dennis.
Huh?
I think he's getting
a pretty clear picture
of your program.
- What are you talking about?
- [Geoffrey] Mm-hm.
Seriously, you'd go
after the interns?
It's nothing to do with them.
Oh, but they had
their second chance
and they fucked up
all on their own,
just like you did, Gloria.
[Indistinct P.A. announcement]
Oh, God. What the hell
is going on today?
It's like feeding time
at the zoo.
- Full moon.
- That's an urban myth.
- Yeah, well, and yet
- [Mia groans]
- Jimmy. Jimmy. Come on.
- Mm-hm. Yep.
- Coming.
- [Mia] Come on.
[Phone rings]
- [Jimmy] Ahh, there she is.
- [Mia] Again.
- Yep. Hello.
- Oh, it's Boy Wonder.
So this time,
Shirley is reporting
shortness of breath
and chronic insomnia.
I see. All right.
Let's have a look at you.
- How's home?
- Habitually shit.
- [Jimmy] Nothing's changed.
- I'll leave you guys to it.
Okay, who's next?
Okay, JMO meeting, all of you.
Sorry, what? No.
Um, yes. It'll take
P.A.: ..incoming 18-year-old
male with stab wounds
I get it.
It'll take two minutes.
Now. Please, all of you.
We'll be done by the time
he's in theatre.
[Intriguing music]
[Jimmy] Yo. Right now, though?
[Gloria] Basically,
they're setting you up to fail.
- [Jimmy] Who's "they"?
- The system.
- And it is not a fair fight.
- [Ellie] Why not?
Mm [Scoffs] In short,
the big boys' club strikes back.
- Was that a Star Wars reference?
- [Gloria] No.
But if that makes it easier
for you to comprehend, Yosef,
then you can go with that.
You're the Rebel Alliance team
or whatever.
Anyway, seriously, you've got
six hours to get out there
and show the assessor
that you can do this.
- That's all we had before.
- [Gloria] I know.
But this time it's terminal.
He has got a hold of all
of the HR incident reports.
- All of them?
- What? All of them?
[Gloria] Yeah. All of them.
Look, none of you
are bad doctors.
You all just might be a little
bit fucked in the head, but
- [Others chuckle]
- you've gotta back yourselves.
'Cause this really
is your last shot.
Is this your idea of a pep talk?
Um, okay,
let me be clear, Yosef.
I think you're
all quite good enough
to go out there
and become real doctors.
That's what I want you to do.
Get the fuck out there
and show him that you can do it.
- Is that better?
- [Knock at door]
No way!
Hello, bitches.
- What are you doing here?
- The boss called me.
She gave me another shot, so
[Clicks tongue] Phew!
Okay. Back to work.
- Oh! Fuck.
- [Lisa giggles]
Come on, princess.
Hey, you're still here, huh?
Hey, hey. My man.
- [Patients whimper]
- Just sit.
That's it. Okay. Okay.
[Male patient]
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
That's fine. I won't touch you.
That's it.
- [Liam] All yours.
- What?
You'll probably
just give them a diazepam
and park them in the corridor.
[Patients whimper and moan]
[Lisa] Oh, let me guess -
magic mushrooms?
Looks like a heroic dose.
A couple of squares of
mushroom chocolate, apparently.
Uh, they're both tachycardic
but other observations
seem within normal limits.
- A lot of crying.
- [Female patient whimpers]
[Lisa] Hi, sweetheart.
What's your name?
- Are you a princess?
- [Chuckles]
Okay, come come with me
and we'll find you
somewhere nice and quiet.
[Whimpers]
That is so cool.
I actually wanted to be a chef.
Yeah. I would have been
a doctor if I failed at cooking.
Right.
No, I'm kidding, Doc.
No, sorry, of course.
That's funny.
Um, so how long have you had
these symptoms for?
Um
- Uh excuse me.
- I'm Yosef. I'm a doctor here.
He landed on a broken bottle
in the sand dunes.
- Jeez, okay. I see.
- Does he need surgery?
- Can I play soccer tomorrow?
- Uh, well
Are you right-footed
or left-footed?
Um, either way, it's a no.
Where is my patient,
the hypoxic asthmatic?
- [Man mumbles nearby]
- Are you kidding me?
- [Man wheezes]
- Marcus?
- Mia.
- [Mia] Yeah?
- Can I get a wheelchair, please?
- [Mia] Yes.
- [Jimmy] As fast as you can.
- [Mia] Yep.
Marcus, we'll get you
on some oxygen, all right?
If you could just stand up,
we'll get you on a wheelchair.
- Thanks, buddy. Come on.
- [Mia] Yep.
- Thank you. Take a seat.
- [Marcus wheezes weakly]
- [Alarms blare]
- [Jimmy] What is that?
- [Mia] Where are we heading to?
- [Jimmy] Just bed 2.
- [Alarm continues blaring]
- [Patients murmur]
[Josh] Everyone, calm down.
Everyone, sit down.
It's probably just a drill.
I'll be right back, okay?
[Josh] Mate,
your alarm's going off.
Mate, turn your phone off, please.
[Curtis] Where's Omar?
[Liam] Suspected gas leak
in the ED services annex.
Omar's there.
Fire brigade's here.
Rightio. What have you got?
18-year-old male.
Single knife wound to the chest.
Stabbed approximately
In here, please.
Bleeding's controlled
with an occlusive dressing.
Okay, can we get a call in
to Gloria, please, urgently?
[Staff member]
She's prepping for surgery.
- You in charge, mate?
- Talk to me, mate. Yep.
We need everyone out
of the north building
till we test for gases
and clear it.
- Really?
- Afraid so.
- Rightio.
- Righto.
Team.
Yeah, yeah.
Sorry, I need Dr. Wall, please.
We'll transfer any stable,
critical patients
to the South Building.
[Liam] Can we do
any external transfers,
Northern Beaches, the Mater?
- We can give it a go.
- What about the stabbing victim?
He's too unstable to transfer.
My theatre's down.
I've cancelled
all elective surgery.
You can use the ortho theatre
in the South Building.
- Thanks.
- [Curtis] What about the ICU?
[Anita] Offline
till this is over.
[Curtis] Rightio, my JMOs.
You heard all that.
We've got an evacuation
and a shutdown.
I want you to take personal
and practical care
with your acute patients.
I want you to get
to them immediately
and I want you to make 'em calm
and I want you
to get 'em outta here.
All of my nursing staff
and my porters,
I want you to corral up
all the walking wounded
and get them
to the assembly area.
We need to maintain any
IV inputs, any oxygen support,
any monitoring equipment.
That's gonna all get transferred
to the assembly area.
Liam, he's our point person.
Any questions,
you go straight to him.
All right? All hands on deck.
Let's go.
[Energetic music]
- [Curtis] You too, champ.
- [Mouths word]
[Energetic music continues]
Omar. How are we going
with the tents?
We've only got
about three tents.
- We've only got three?
- Yeah.
Let's get them over here
for the acutes.
- Trish.
- Yep?
Can we get monitors
over to them?
- [Trish] Yep. You want IV pumps?
- Yes, please.
- And the battery packs.
- [Trish] Yep.
Excellent. Thank you, ma'am.
Stop. You have to turn around.
[Energetic music]
Rightio. Are we all good?
Everyone out?
Yep. So this list
is top priority.
This lot's gonna need treatment
within the next couple of hours.
This lot, we're telling to go
home and have a good lie-down.
- Rightio. Very good.
- How long is this gonna take?
Well, the fireys are worried
about this gas leak,
so we've gotta consider we're
here for the rest of the night.
- [Liam] How fun!
- Copy that.
- Happy days.
- [Liam] Great.
[P.A.] This is
an emergency notification.
A gas leak has been detected
in the building.
- Evacuate immediately using
- Hello?
- Hello? Anyone here?
- Do not use elevators.
[Josh] Hello? Anyone here?
[Knocks]
- [Alarms blare]
- Hello Sir?
Do you hear the alarms?
What's your name?
- Terry.
- Terry, okay. Come on. Let's go.
[Energetic music]
[Firefighters converse
indistinctly]
[Terry whimpers and gasps]
Whoa, whoa, where's the pain?
Terry?
Stomach and back. [Groans]
Hey, hey. I need oxygen
and monitoring now.
Theo, wheelchair. Curtis.
[Terry gasps]
Okay, pulse is thready.
What's his story?
Reported lower-back pain.
Now sudden severe abdo pain.
Blood pressure in his boots
and a pulsatile abdominal mass.
- Might be triple A, yeah.
- Triple A.
All right, let's find
this gentleman a bed.
Let's get some lines into him
and hang fluids.
Haemoglobin, group and hold.
Get a CT scan
as soon as possible
and give Gloria the heads-up.
Well, no, she's with
that stabbing victim.
Yeah, we're very busy.
Hey, can you guys stay
nice and close, please?
Guys, can you please stay
- Oh, my God, that's bad.
- I need you to come back over
Oh, that's bad.
That's freaking me out.
[Mother] Can you get away
from my kid, please?
- Yes, please do.
- Come over this way, please.
- I need you to stay with me.
- Ohhh. Why would you do that?
[Mother] Do you want some water?
[Lisa] I'm gonna show you
guys something, okay?
- Come on, come with me.
- [Indistinct radio chatter]
Is that your girlfriend?
[Scoffs] No.
Why, did it look like that or
Anyway, look, I think you're
gonna need stitches, Jordy.
No. No. Please, no.
[Mother] He's really
scared of stitches.
Uh, well,
I'll tell you a secret.
I'm pretty scared of stitches
as well.
- But you're a doctor.
- I know.
People keep making fun of me
for it.
I'm not surprised.
All right, mate. Settle down.
Look, I'm gonna
give you something
that you won't feel
a thing, okay?
All right, we can do this, yeah?
[Ellie] Yeah,
I once had a patient
who had a baby cockroach
stuck in her ear.
Oh, that's so gross.
What's the grossest thing
you've seen in a kitchen?
- [Maria] Definitely customers.
- [Laughs]
Rotting squid after a power cut.
That was s [Groans]
[Moans quietly]
[Ellie] Maria?
[Heart monitor beeps]
Maria, are you okay?
I just feel dizzy.
- Mia.
- [Mia] Yeah.
Uh, she's tachycardic
and hypertensive.
Okay.
Yeah, she's hot.
- Is everything okay?
- Can we get Curtis?
Uh, Josh has called a triple A.
He's over there.
- [Softly] Shit.
- What's wrong?
Uh, temp's 38.6,
heart rate is 140,
BP is 78 over 50.
She came in with flu-like
illness and malaise.
Sepsis?
Fluid resus, antibiotics.
- Might need pressors.
- Mm.
But we don't have
a definitive source.
What about sepsis mimics?
Autoimmune flare? Drug reaction.
She might not have time
to do any of those tests.
Okay, I'll get a cannula in.

She could die!
Come on, you guys are in there.
Yeah, with breathing apparatus.
Can't you talk to
