The Garden: Commune or Cult (2023) s01e06 Episode Script

Commune or Cult

[Tyler] Living off grid
is definitely not
for the faint of heart.
[woman] Get out, get out!
[Tyler] A weak man
or weak woman
in the apocalypse,
you're useless.
Tyler will lead these people,
I see that.
[Tree] You just said,
a community where you
and your wife are the leaders.
-That's a cult.
-Yeah.
I called this council
on the right 'cause
I'm asking you to leave.
Tree fully instigated
an all-out situation.
There's just some things
that are not really adding up.
Would you be willing to share
your side of the story
in person?
[Narayah]
[Tisheila] There is a whole
lot that I like about
this place.
But there's just one thing
that I'm uneasy about
and that's security.
[machine whirring]
[Patrick] The Garden,
it had humble beginnings.
People really
wanted to hang out
and they really
wanted to drink.
So, we're gonna throw
a sexy party.
[Patrick] We got a lot to do
and I don't know the party
is in the creation process
of an intentional
community space.
[Tree] Patrick, he's not
the leader of anything.
You are putting us
all in danger.
Stop filming!
[Tree] I see that things
can't coexist.
[dramatic music playing]
I want to host events,
parties and, like,
space where artists
can feel that they
can express themselves.
[Tree] Okay.
Well, yes, it can be.
I'm coming into a lot
of conflict with individuals
because I wanna create
a space that can host parties.
[Timber] We'll see.
[Tree] Okay, I will see.
[dramatic music playing]
To be able to really
create my dream,
I think I need some separation
from some of the people here.
[Tree] I'm not trying to.
I was pushed out
by this community for who I am
and I'm not accepted.
I am being told all the time
that I need to change.
Well, no, but you're, like,
you're attacking me.
You sound like a cult, bro.
I don't wanna sit here
and fight with people.
That just means
I need to move on.
[opening theme music playing]
[woman] We're open
to anybody at any time.
[Hunter] It's not
a safe place.
[Tree] We're here creating
something new.
We're gonna burn it.
[man] If I don't conform,
I am outcasted.
[woman] There's a reason
they're off the grid.
[woman 2] For the love
of all humanity.
[woman 3] The Garden
is a cult.
You are putting us
all in danger.
Stop filming!
[woman] We're going
to tell our true story.
[theme music fades]
[Tree] Why are you target
Why are you speaking
to me like that?
Party caused extreme ripples
in the community.
And possibly damage
our relationship with our
neighboring community
who have kids.
Remember, we spoke
to them about that?
And they said,
"Oh, it's fine, you know,
just don't every night."
They superseded
the consensus process
that this community
operates by
and ignored
people's concerns--
This is a democracy
unless you're upset about it.
It caused great rifts
in the community.
Yeah, conflict in communities
is inevitable.
Um
There's extra turmoil,
because certain individuals
that this party
is gonna happen
regardless of what you think
and what you say,
just kind of railroading it
through the community,
which is like, not a practice
that we practice normally.
Tree is been empowered to go
directly against the heart
of this community,
which is putting the community
over a personal interest
which Tree has gone
extremely against.
Team Tree is like
the fun cool,
let's reward ourselves side.
And Team Patrick
is the annoying parent side.
I am on Tree side
in this. [laughs]
I'm tired of having
to justify my needs.
And so, I need to move on.
It isn't working for me
with this group of people.
[kid]
[all laughing]
[Julia] We haven't
started yet.
-[kid]
-[Julia] It has started.
[woman] Yes, we have.
I think this can get worse,
we're such different people.
Uh you know?
And that's fine.
You know,
I appreciate what he brings,
as far as his high energy
and laughter and fun,
and maybe,
I don't bring so much of that.
I mean, I feel animosity
towards every single person
I probably
ever meet sometimes.
[laughing] You know, like,
what do you mean?
Like, I feel animosity
between you guys,
towards you guys.
Like what the [bleep]
I'm a nutcase, you know?
I get angry at everyone.
I don't think
he understands me.
And there's parts of him
that I'm pretty
critical of, too,
especially, when it comes
to disrespecting others.
It seems this attitude of,
like, "That's just how I am,"
and that's not really
accountability to my end
as far as I'm concerned,
you know?
[soft music playing]
So, number one,
above all else, is safety.
And a storm shelter
is my number one priority.
And to be quite honest,
this is a way for me
to kind of leave my mark
on this community.
And what I do, what I teach,
what I build,
we're gonna make it happen.
Patrick, Robert is here,
and we got to figure out
if everyone's okay with us
moving forward
about where the shipping
container is gonna go.
But he's only
gonna be here for,
like, an hour and a half.
I think we just need to make
an executive decision
based on, you know,
what's the best
for the community?
Yeah, I don't know.
You know, most time
decisions are made
through consensus.
You can call council,
you know,
two-three times on the horn
or you can run around
just check with people
and see if there's opposition.
All right, so everybody
in the kitchen right now,
do you think we should
have a counseling
about where the shipping
container is gonna go?
He's here right now.
So, I think we decided
against this side
because we have
the perennial garden.
Just for the sake of like,
our time and effort
and energy that we've
already put in there.
We should probably
do that side.
All right, so you'd be
the voice of the reasons
why we're doing it over here.
-[woman] Yeah.
-Okay, cool.
Yeah, 'cause it's
for a limited time,
limited amount of money.
Yeah, I know, I get that.
I get that.
Yeah, this is cool.
All right, cool,
let's get to work.
-It's just happening. [laughs]
-[Tyler] Yeah.
Okay, thanks.
So, after the crazy weather,
people are feeling like,
it's a good idea for us
to have some kind of
tornado shelter.
And the thought of, like,
rushing to do that
and, like,
"Before this weekend
in case there's tornadoes,"
feels like,
it might be a little, like,
just reckless.
You didn't have any idea
that this was happening?
Okay.
Yeah, I did not know that
they were just gonna
call Robert today.
Do we need a council to
[Julia] It's hard 'cause
he's right there right now.
[machine beeping]
[Tyler] Go!
Go!
[gunshot]
-[Tyler] There you go.
-[Tisheila] Nice.
Oh, kill shot.
Good job!
-I hit it.
-Look at that!
Yeah, now, it's leaking.
Oh, wow.
Tyler and Sheila told me
that they are gonna go
off the land
and let's just
shoot some guns.
And I was down to try,
like, I'll try anything once.
Now, you wanna look down this.
-It might be easy
without your glasses on.
-Oh, yeah.
-Here, I'll hold on to them.
-Thank you.
And slowly squeeze it
when you're ready.
I'm ready.
[Tyler] All right, now.
-Boom!
-[all applauding]
-[Tisheila] Good job!
-[Tyler] Got it.
-Good job.
-Did I hit it?
-Yeah.
-All right!
-Good job!
-Okay!
[all laughing]
[Jessica] That was fun.
How long
have you been shooting?
I got my first firearm
in 2016.
And I just wanted to protect
myself and my family.
-Okay.
-Oh.
Safety is on.
Yeah, I couldn't imagine
you pulling this out
on The Garden property.
People will be
losing their mind.
One thing that I just,
I'm really struggling with
is the security measures.
There should at least be
a security team
or a plan in the event
that somebody,
you know,
comes on the property
and means no good.
Hopefully, if any of them
have any sense in them
that they would at least
have a weapon.
Everyone has a knife,
but you can't bring a knife
to a gunfight.
Like, not everyone is always
gonna agree on every
single thing.
So, I feel like,
there needs to be, like,
a majority system
-or something like that.
-[Tisheila] I agree.
Like, we can't just let
three people who don't
like guns,
like, you know,
jeopardize the safety
of everyone,
like that just isn't--
Again, this is a community
where everything has to be
agreed upon
in order for things
to be put into place.
And that's where the problem
lies within their system
and that's where I think
this whole thing is flawed.
That's why in my property,
it's my way or the highway.
And I get it,
this is
an intentional community,
but on my property,
my wife and I
are the king and queen
and if you're on my property,
you do what I say.
And if you don't,
you're probably gonna
have hands put on you
or gun shoved in your face.
And that's how it goes.
I definitely think that
he could be
one of the leaders of this,
if not "the" leader.
Now, I'm noticing
more cliques in the group.
[Tyler] Definitely.
What I see is a lot
of the old members
of The Garden
sticking together
and you're an outsider
until you can prove
yourself otherwise.
And who knows how long
that process takes.
It was really nice
that we were able
to just have, like,
a newcomers' moment.
I was able to get some things
off my chest
that I had been keeping in.
It's nice to know
that they validated me
and they had been experiencing
some of the same things
and the same frustrations
and struggles,
so I'm just very conflicted.
Like, is this a cult,
is it not?
I would love to get to know
an outsider's perspective,
like, another person
who was fully in the group
and left.
Narayah.
I messaged her
and she's ready to talk.
[engine whirring]
[Narayah] I got a phone call.
They're wanting to speak.
And I feel called to be
a protector of sorts.
Yeah, I mean, it's just,
it's not okay what they did,
it's not okay.
There are some very corrupt,
misconstrued hurt people.
You know, "Hurt people
hurt people," that saying?
Their energy is just
dark and heavy.
I really don't see how they
think that getting me
off the land
is going to end my journey.
I think that
it's just beginning.
[woman]
We need to center ourselves
and we can't just have a bunch
of lawyers.
One of the concerns currently
is that people wouldn't
really be able to be
their authentic selves
and kind of hash out
these kinds of
harsh feelings, maybe,
tensions between each other
with the cameras here.
And so please, if you would,
don't mind,
like, don't record us,
so that we can actually
have this real meeting.
Thank you.
So, everyone right now
is in a council meeting,
not doing a thing.
They're hashing out
their feelings
and their visions and futures,
whatever they wanna
talk about.
I'm better utilized
here in this moment,
and that's what I'm doing.
It will probably cool
to throw a party.
That's what I wanna create,
you know, get the hype going.
[Tree] I said I would not
wanna be weird--
[Tree] Okay, but, like,
it's just so--
[Tempo] You had your turn
to speak truth.
They usually do
a lot of talking
and it usually takes
a few days to think
of a project,
then they start on it,
you know,
two or three days later,
and this is what it's about.
It's about
getting things done,
not just talking about it.
[Patrick] Julia came down
and said,
"Hey, Tree has told me,
he put on a"
I think the words were,
"Sexy party"
and that the new land being
kind of a more free space.
And my first question
to Tree was like,
"Don't you think
that would kind of exclude
some of the people that were
a part of this project?"
And his response to that was,
"Yes, I don't want them being
part of the next project."
That basically, they're gonna
have a sexy party.
Me, Mia, Shine,
Bobby, Swoop, and Goat
were not welcomed
to be part of that.
[Tree] He's putting words
in my mouth.
[Patrick] Listen to my words,
please, Tree.
The style of how they
make decisions
and the style of how they
get things done,
it takes way too long.
If you wanna be a part
of this project and help,
that'd be great.
The tornadoes, they don't give
a [bleep] about your feelings,
and neither do I.
So, now, there's
a storm shelter being built.
[Tree] I got to be
away from people
who I'm constantly
having these conflicts with.
I need to remove myself
from this community.
And me saying,
I wanted to do something else
and create a space
that hosted parties
was laughed at, mocked at.
And it's like, "Well, yeah,
that's why I don't wanna
do it with you all
because you don't
believe in it."
And I see individuals
being a roadblock to that.
Like, this is kind of who I am
and I really
chopped my legs off
being at The Garden
for so long
and I'm done, I'm tired
and I've hit a breaking point.
If the shipping container guy
can get here today,
this is gonna be done
in two days
to do a gigantic project.
[Patrick] This was hurtful.
I don't wanna talk
about this anymore.
[Jessica] Patrick just wants
to make Tree out
to seem like this
irresponsible young kid.
It's causing like a major rift
and one of them needs to go
and the person
who should probably go
is the person that's
not having a ton of fun.
[laughs]
[Tisheila] So, what was your
exact issue that people wanted
you to leave?
Like, what was the drama
based on?
They don't trust me.
They don't trust me
because I wasn't scared
to speak up.
The excommunication of someone
-who has questions
-[Tisheila] Yeah.
Yeah, it does kind of raise
some red flags.
The jury is still out on
what I think about her.
But that does not
take away from,
you know, what she's saying
about them.
[Jessica] So, now that you're
removed from everything,
would you say
that it's a cult?
I definitely feel like it has
a lot of cult like tendencies.
You know, it's like,
if you're gonna have
a hierarchy,
just say that you have
a hierarchy,
like, tell people the truth
of what they're walking into.
And that actually is one
of the cult like tendencies,
is not telling the people
what the group really is.
Yeah.
[Narayah] There's a lot more
happening here.
If you're paying attention
and you're aware
and you're using your tools.
[Tisheila] Sometimes
I can hear, you know,
people, like,
walk past my tent.
[Ricky] I know
I wasn't tripping
because somebody
came up to my tent
and was about to unzip it,
and then, they walked away.
I don't know
if they're spying,
but I do know that I can hear
people, like, right there.
There was something
that was told to me
on more than one basis around,
like, being cautious
with the food in the kitchen.
[Ricky] Oh.
Ah, my stomach has been
kind of churning.
-I don't know
if it's from the food
-Hm.
from the weather,
from the elements,
from my body trying
to adjust to the germs.
If your stomach
is kind of getting upset,
there was something
that was told to me
from, like, people that have
had bad experiences, I guess,
and like being worried about
people putting stuff
in their food.
[Tisheila] Oh.
[Narayah] I've heard of some
people being poisoned even,
and, like, having, like,
boogers and spit be put
into their food.
What the hell?
[Narayah] Ah, yeah,
I didn't know what I was
getting myself into
either, honestly.
Oh, I 100 percent know
that it's real,
that people put things
in the food,
whether it be physically
or energetically
to affect people.
To know that people
with vendettas,
personal vendettas
will actually do something
to the food,
that actually pisses me off.
I'm looking at people
a little differently.
Some people are, like,
willing to overlook things
because they just want to be
accepted and be a part of,
and, like, whatever security
that they think that they're
getting from it,
one way or another, like,
just know that
you have options.
Like, you don't have to stay
with people that you don't
feel in alignment with.
Right.
[Jessica] Talking
to Narayah
She seems very level headed.
I trust what she says.
This place actually
might be a cult.
[Heather] Like, living simply,
really appeals to me,
but like dealing with council
and rules and consensus,
is just like
Ugh!
-Yeah, I know, but--
-It's the only part
I don't really like.
[Tyler] We would have
our own rules.
You got to, you know,
obey the rules.
[laughs] Okay, okay.
And I call that kind of,
like, a dictatorship
and I was like--
[laughing] Those
are strong words.
[Tyler] But that's what it is.
Like, at our house,
we're the Alpha
and the Omega there.
Like, we you come in
our property,
you're gonna do what we say.
And if I tell you to leave,
there's not a consensus on it,
you're just gonna leave.
If you don't want to,
I'm just gonna pick you up
and throw you.
[Heather laughs]
There's nothing there
that's gonna
Yeah, this is
that's the difference.
If we're gonna do
off grid things,
this is like the ultimate
[Heather] Me, I feel like
I've got a lot of time
and energy in
into this place already.
Then, it will be stupid
to just like walk away
and never see where it goes
in the future.
All right, give me your face.
[laughs]
[Heather grunts]
[insects trilling]
I wanted to really
tell you guys in person,
we're completely grateful
about this experience
and what it's done for us.
The world desperately
needs communities
like this because
the American way of life
is coming to an end.
And communities like this
that live sustainably,
have the best chances
of survival.
But I'm used to being the king
of the my domain.
And that might be
the hardest part
is we all have to collectively
agree on everything.
There is a better way.
[Tree] He wants to create
a community where
he's a dictator.
That's not my vibe.
Like what the [bleep]
How It's so wild,
it's so wild.
Y'all are fighting
a [bleep] war.
You are fighting a war
for our species
as human beings,
the war that you guys
are fighting
to make this world better.
[Tree] Tyler trying
to create some [bleep]
Adam and Eve story
It's [bleep] wack, dude.
It's wack.
[Tyler] We just want
to let you know that
this is our intention.
[Patrick] In the back
of my mind, I'm thinking,
somebody has to lead,
the actions, the emotions,
you know?
Me and Tyler share that drive
to do something proactive.
[birds chirping]
[Julia] Hey.
-[Jessica laughing] Hi.
-How's it going?
Good, how are you?
[Julia] I'm good.
-Cute outfit.
-[Julia] Thank you.
Were you all right
last night in the rain?
Shockingly, I was.
Yeah, the tent,
like, really held up.
It worked really well.
[Julia] You didn't
get wet at all?
-No, not at all.
Knock on wood.
-[Julia] That's amazing.
-[Julia] Yeah.
-Yeah.
And you've just, like,
made this experience
so much easier.
So, you've just been someone
like, I can relate to this
whole time, so.
[Julia] I'm so happy
to hear that.
-I appreciate you.
-[Julia] And I'm so happy
you stuck it out.
Like, it's really
not that easy for, you know,
people that have
never done this before
to handle all the, like,
how out of your comfort zone
you are, you know?
So, I'm really, like,
proud of you.
-Aw.
-How well you've adjusted,
it's, like, really,
really impressive.
Oh, thank you.
That means a lot
coming from you.
-Yeah.
-[both laugh]
So, I just want
to let you know
-in full transparency
-Mm-hmm.
I came here for two reasons
to, like, challenge myself
and because
I saw on social media,
people thought it was a cult,
-and I wanted to see
for myself if it was a cult.
-Mm-hmm.
And I just wanted
to let you know, like,
I came here for those reasons.
And I have had
a great experience
and I'm just really
thankful to be here.
I'm a little thrown off
to hear that
Jessica came in to see
if it was a cult or not.
To hear that, like,
somebody that I have been
making a really, like,
good connection with and stuff
had, like,
this other intention.
That feels weird.
And so, you've determined
that it's not a cult
or that it is a cult,
what? [laughs]
I did speak to Narayah
outside of here,
and she did open my eyes
to a lot of things.
And I definitely am taking
what she says seriously
as well as my experiences
here seriously.
And my friendship
and admiration for you
is genuine.
And that's not gonna change
regardless of what I think
about this place as a whole.
It has, like,
changed some thoughts,
but everything
that I've experienced
is genuine
and I wanna let you know that
our friendship is genuine
and that will not change.
I don't know.
I just know how it, like,
affected you,
like the hate on social media
-and the death threats
and so
-Mm-hmm, yes.
I really appreciate
you sharing your perspective
in that way.
And I admire you for just,
like, being so strong
through it all,
and, like,
standing your ground.
And yeah,
you're just such like a
badass, I don't know. [laughs]
Yeah, I hope that
this whole thing
can show people, like,
you know,
people can share land
in lots of different ways,
-you know?
-Totally.
And yeah, I hope that
that's a takeaway.
Mm-hmm.
Maybe, a lot of the times
that we were talking,
she was like, you know,
looking for clues
or you know, that feels weird.
And so, I'm thrown off
when she says that to me.
[Jessica] Thank you
for everything.
[music playing]
Hearing if someone gets
pissed off at someone else,
they'll do something
crazy to the food that
that's just like
my worst nightmare.
I can't imagine that.
That really got to my head.
I don't know why somebody
would do that.
This morning, when I heard
the food bell ring,
I'm like, "I'm good."
[dramatic music playing]
I didn't do anything to you,
why would you mess up my food?
We're supposed to be all of,
like, people do that here.
That really threw me off.
And so, today I'm leaving.
And I don't want
anybody to know.
I do feel like I'm leaving
with a greater ability
to start my own community.
I know what I want.
And I know what I don't want,
that's for sure.
[dramatic music swells]
[dramatic music fades]
[birds chirping]
[machine whirring]
[Tyler] So,
I get up this morning
to find Swoop nailing together
some two by fours.
I have no idea
what he's doing.
But by the afternoon,
Patrick and Bobby
are joining in
and it ends up being
some type of tower.
Come to find out,
it's a "Fear" tower
that we're gonna be burning
to the ground later.
[Patrick] Fear is
the number one
controlling factor
in the world.
People operate
a lot of their decisions
are based off of fear.
People sometimes
work a [bleep] job
and they're afraid to quit it.
They are afraid to travel
because they don't know
what might happen.
They're afraid
of different things
and it pushes them
in different directions.
And we wanted to burn fear.
We're about to light this up!
[Tyler] So,
the plan for tonight,
we're going to write
all of our fears on this tower
and when we burn it,
all the turmoil that's been
going on in the community
is going to disappear.
I'm just not so sure
this is the correct way
to be dealing
with our problems
and to make sure
that this community
survives here.
[Julia] Are we ready for this?
[man]
[Julia] They're lighting it!
They're lighting it!
-[man] Hey.
-[woman] Oh, my God.
[Julia exclaims] Oh, oh, oh!
[all exclaiming, screaming]
[dog barking]
[somber music playing]
[dog barking]
[all exclaiming, screaming]
[dog barking]
[playing conga drums]
[screams]
[man] There it goes,
watch out!
[all exclaiming, screaming]
[Jessica] I came here
to challenge myself
and to see if it's a cult.
The challenge myself part
I definitely accomplished,
like, check.
And after
speaking to Narayah,
and upon reflection,
the way that
this thing is run
I do think it's a cult.
[sinister instrumental
music playing]
[Jessica] There is
the same ideology.
They're excommunicating
people,
they're not really
open to questioning.
I think the people
are great
except for one.
Honestly, I think
if Patrick just leaves,
they'd be fine.
He's causing a lot
of the issues.
He's manipulative,
omitting information
and being secretive.
[Patrick] Most people,
they're afraid of other
people's judgments.
We could die at any moment,
I have no control over that.
And so, that's my thinking
of why there's no reason
to be afraid.
It's out of my hands,
why would I be afraid?
[playing banjo]
[people singing]
[both laugh]
[Julia]
[Tree laughs]
[Julia]
[Tree] Huh?
[Julia]
[Tree] Spin you or what?
[Tree] Me and Julia,
we're just dirty travelers.
And I know that we can create
a different culture,
that we can create something
new together.
Yeah, it's hard.
I just, you know
He's my partner.
I'm gonna support him in that.
[Tree]
[Julia]
It's just, like, hard
because I get so attached
to everybody,
and, like, the kids
and like Yeah.
So, it's just like yeah.
[sighs softly]
[somber music intensifies]
[Julia] Van life moment.
So, this is, like, couch mode.
It pulls out like this.
And then,
it goes into bed mode.
And we have a little
pullout kitchen and stuff.
We don't really use it.
We did it, like,
before we found The Garden,
we were like,
"We're gonna live in a van."
I've been helping
these guys for years now
create this network of spaces.
And the people
on this land right now,
need a place to be
able to raise their children.
And what better place
than here?
And so, I'm just coming
to terms with that.
And, you know,
this is not the space for me.
Yeah, it is hard when
you can see both sides, too,
you know, and I'm like talking
to Tree and I'm like,
"Yeah, I get that."
And then I'm like talking
to these other people,
I'm like, "Yeah, I get that."
But you, like, can't make them
see each other sides,
and then, it's like,
nothing you can do,
you know? [sniffles]
[Tyler] It's the day
that I have been waiting for
for a very long time.
We are finally getting
the storm shelter,
the shipping container
in the ground.
[Patrick] I think
that's plenty big enough.
[Tyler] It's gonna be plenty.
We can get this whole entire
community into it.
Sure.
[Tyler] Yeah, so, by the time
this is all said and done,
there should be very little
showing it, it's just a mount.
And then, he's gonna
reshape the whole hillside,
so it doesn't look like
anything's there.
Cool.
I think, me and Tree
worked really good together.
But at times,
it was, like, discouraging.
Yeah, Tyler has been
nice getting to know him
and his wife, Heather,
is easy to get along with.
And we share a lot of the same
opinions about society
and it being in a state
of collapse.
And putting actions
behind those realizations.
Before I was a little
aggravated that
I was the only one
that really appreciated
that this was happening.
But in the end,
when they finally saw
what was happening,
everyone got really excited.
We came together
as a community
and we're getting it done
as we speak.
[Patrick] Leadership roles
are needed.
But then, there's like,
backlash from that, of course,
like, where people
are kind of trying
to put me on a pedestal, like,
or knock me off
my perceived pedestal.
What's really been helpful
and made things
a lot easier over time
is more people learning
how to fill those roles
and allowing me to, like,
not fill them.
All I truly care about
is actually making
this community safer.
This is just the first
of many, many larger projects
that can be done
on this property.
When it comes
to leadership roles,
if you have a project,
you need things to get done,
who's the leader here?
[dramatic music swells, fades]
[phone ringing]
[Narayah] I get to connect
with someone
that has had similar
experiences like mine.
How long were you
at The Garden?
[Hunter] About a year.
Always some kind of [bleep]
drama going on.
-What?
-[Hunter] Kidnappings.
Like, yeah, it's not
a safe place by any means.
I appreciate you Hunter
and I will talk
to you soon, then.
[Hunter] Have a good night.
The more people I talk to,
the deeper the hole gets.
[dramatic music playing]
[Tyler] This should work.
I am gonna make
a fishing spear.
So, here I'm just gonna
equally split
down the shaft.
We're gonna do
our first switch.
See
How it's spread
open a lot more?
Yeah.
Better chance
of catching a fish.
I don't know exactly
what I was seeking
when I came out here.
I don't know.
All I know is I'm learning
a lot about myself.
More is actually
more meaningful
than I thought
it was gonna be.
I thought this was just
gonna be
another, like, weird adventure
and it is, but
on a very deep level
for myself.
Like, my past,
my childhood
was just full of sorrow.
I was 15 years old and, like,
there's a whole situation
where I was being forced
to mule drugs for someone
that was much older than me
and they threatened my
threatened my mom.
They threatened that my mom
would be, like, killed
and burned alive
and raped in the house
if I didn't keep on doing
what they asked of me.
And they forced me
to smoke crack at 15,
it was [bleep] bad.
And then,
it got to the point
Yeah, sure, I'll share that.
Um It got to the point
where the bullying was so bad
and what was happening
in my life was so [bleep] bad
that I just, I was at a point
where I wanted to kill myself.
And you know what saved me?
My grandmother being murdered.
My
Give me a second.
My father called me
and said, "Son, like
somebody killed
Grandma Shirley."
And that was devastating.
And it ended up being
my cousin Travis.
It was his own grandmother,
stabbed her 67 times.
He was one of my
good friends growing up.
Not anymore
because he got life in prison.
Didn't realize how much
I was still holding in
about that.
And I realized,
I knew there was a better way.
You can either be a victim,
or you can be
a resilient mother [bleep]
I'm the latter.
There's no reason for anybody
to be killing themselves.
They just need the tools
to survive it.
And I found out as someone
with these problems,
that nature was a good way
to decompress,
and get back to your, like,
primal roots
of how we should be
living anyway.
Taking your clothes off
and just
get wild with it.
You can use nature in a way
that heals you
from the inside out.
At The Garden,
someone needs to be
able to take charge
for certain situations.
When [bleep] hits the fan,
this may not work long-term,
and they may
need to restructure
how they run things.
They're all about
non-violence,
and if you choose
a non-violent way of life,
what happens
is that people come
and try to loot all your food?
You can go non-violent, then
or is someone gonna
take charge and say,
"Hey, we got to protect this.
You may not like it."
It's either that
or you are gonna die,
your kids are gonna die.
There's children in here.
There's kids
that were born here.
You can't be a good man
unless you're capable
of violence.
[dramatic music playing]
You're hunted or you hunt.
And I choose the hunt.
[dramatic music fades]
