-[Eun-sik] Looking forward to more.
Guys, tell us about yourselves.
Why did you decide to come on this trip?
Yeah, yeah. I'm curious.
We thought once we entered our thirties
and got jobs and stuff,
it would be hard to take time out
to travel together like this.
-[Kian] It only gets harder.
-We're practically unemployed.
So we all thought,
"This might be our last memory together."
You plan on working after this then?
-How old are you now?
-I'm 27.
-Twenty-seven years old.
-[Jin] If you're 27, then
When I was 27
That year was the hardest one I remember.
[Eun-sik] Oh.
I kept applying to Naver,
but they kept rejecting me.
I tried four times.
I was doing everything,
but things weren't working out.
Back then, I thought I'd go crazy 'cause
If I failed at this,
all my hard work would mean nothing.
I still needed to make a living
in the meantime.
So I helped students
get into a private art academy.
And during the day,
I taught at a kids' art academy
and even used their shuttle bus.
[all] Wow.
"Kids, hurry. Get on the bus."
You've worked hard then.
No, but everyone's got a story like that.
[Jin] How long have you lived
in South Korea?
-Fifteen years.
-Ah.
With North Korea, you think the regime
NORTH KOREA?
is gonna continue for a while?
I think it will, for Jong Un's lifetime.
And what's your major?

I'm a defector from North Korea.
-Wow.
-[Ye-eun] Really?
-[Jin] No way. A defector?
-[Eun-sik] Oh wow.
[Ye-eun] Really?
But I was caught once,
before I actually managed to come here.
It's just been me and my sister
since I was 12.
I'm not the type
to really dote on my sister,
but if I had defected back then,
she would have been left all alone.
I'm not exactly the world's best brother,
but at least with me around,
she was somewhat safe from people
who might want to do her harm.
So I persuaded my sister to come with me,
and we left at dawn on February 28th
and crossed the border on March 1st.
You said you were caught once
while you were crossing.
-What happened? Were you taken to a camp?
-[John] Aoji coal mine?
I was sent to the inspection division
of my county's department of safety
and beaten a lot.
[winces]
When it was over,
just seeing people in military fatigues
made a chill run down my spine.
I also tattooed these letters
on my back recently.
They read "The Great Escape."
In a way,
I made a great escape from there.
And I attribute a lot of meaning
to the date as well.
