Task (2025) s01e07 Episode Script

A Still Small Voice

1
- Grasso?
- [Tom Brandis] Yeah.
All that says is a complaint was filed
when he was a member
of another Task Force.
Come on, there's a pattern.
But there's no evidence.
Even if Grasso led Cliff there
and and I believe he did,
no Snapchat exchanges
between the two of 'em.
- They're not recoverable.
- No. Fuck that.
No, Aleah, I'm sorry, but this
- We he can't just keep getting away with.
- This investigation
is now in the hands of OPS.
No, but he outplayed them once,
maybe more than once.
Yeah.
Let's at least go to Wissahickon
Park and take a look around.
We owe that much to Lizzie.
[Sam] Tom?
Will you stay with me
until I fall asleep?
Sure.
It's just temporary.
Look, we we can't do
anything in the middle of the night.
First thing tomorrow morning,
we'll go to the park,
see what turns up, alright?
[soft, dramatic music playing]
[train horn blowing in distance]
[car door closes]
[Vincent Hawkes]
You're late.
Mother Club met this morning.
We got a dead federal agent.
We need to cut ties with
anyone and everyone
who can connect us
to this fuckin' disaster.
Feds came by yesterday
asking about Grasso,
and I told 'em he'd been
acting strange lately, and erratic.
So, when it happens,
it won't be a surprise.
And another thing
came through this morning.
There's a runner named Lee Whitehead,
operates outta Reading.
He moved 11 kilos last night
to a Colombian DTO.
My sources say the drugs
came from a young woman.
Forget the money.
We're way past the fuckin' money.
We need to clean house right now.
That's a lot of money
to forget, Vincent.
[lighter flicking]
Look, all I'm saying is that
you got sources in Reading.
At least worth calling down
and asking around
about the young woman, right?
Right.
I'll do that.
[phone buzzing]
Hey.
This is who I think it is?
Where do I stand, Vincent?
[Vincent]
Jayson still with you?
- Yeah.
- Well, here's my offer.
You take care of that kid
for your brothers
before he brings us all to our knees.
If he's dead by the morning,
I won't come looking for you.
Per?
Perry?
[phone flips closed]
[sighs]
[sniffling]
[breathing deeply]
[water running]
[water turning off]
[door opens]
- [door closes]
- [footsteps approaching]
[Jayson Wilkes]
Hey. Shower's broke.
Had to wash in the
fucking sink. [chuckles]
What's the matter with you?
Nothing.
I'll fix the shower.
- [knife drops]
- [drawer closes]
[soft music playing]
[insects chirring]
[water lapping softly]
[soft music continues playing]
[birdsong]
[Emily] Okay.
Um, what do you think?
Should we do, um,
socks in this drawer, or
- [drawer opens]
- I don't know.
[drawer closes]
[Emily] Alright, we've
got underwear, socks,
pajamas, t-shirts.
- What are we missing?
- [Tom] Toothbrush.
A bathing suit, in case we decide
to take him swimming at the Y.
And, um, uh, let him
let him pick out a couple things
for his bedroom.
What kind of things for his bedroom?
Posters, uh, stickers.
I don't know, whatever he wants.
When Ethan and Em
came home for the first time,
the social worker encouraged us
to let 'em decorate their own bedrooms,
so they felt like they had
a place that was their own.
[pencil scribbling]
How long do you, uh,
plan on keeping him here?
Well, the conservator said they'd call
as soon as they had
a permanent home for him.
Could be three weeks.
Could be six months.
We don't know.
- [Sara sighs]
- [Tom] Hm.
I have to ask, 'cause,
uh, it's been on my mind,
and, uh, I'm not good
at letting things fester.
Mm, I'm aware of that.
- You hate festering.
- Is this bringing Sam here
your way of making up
for what happened with Ethan?
What? No.
- Well, like trying to rebalance the universe, or
- No.
No, it's got nothing
to do with your brother.
Nothing at all.
- Good.
- [door opens]
- [Aleah Clinton] It's just me again.
- [door closes]
Uh, morning. We're in the kitchen.
- Morning.
- Let me guess.
You two, uh
[sighs]
aren't heading out to the career fair.
Oh, I I'm staying out of this one.
No career fair, no Task.
We're just tying up some loose ends.
Alright. While you're
tying up loose ends,
you let me know if he falls down again
or can't remember his own name.
- Will do.
- [Tom chuckles]
Have a good day.
- Eagles-Cowboys, 20-20.
- Come on! For Christ's sake,
- get upstairs and get packed.
- Jake Elliott, 60 yards for the win.
- We're gonna be late.
- [imitating explosion]
- Hey.
- Hey!
- It's a tie. Wow.
- Mom!
You know what your father's like.
Drops you off whenever he likes,
but I'm a second late,
- and he's crucifying me.
- [door opens]
- Hey, Uncle Ant.
- Hey, hey!
- Hi, buddy.
- Hey, Uncle Ant.
- [kisses smacking]
- Hey, don't mess with my hair.
- What are you doin' here?
- [grunting]
I got some work in the area,
I thought I'd pop in.
Boys, upstairs, get packed.
- Come on.
- No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- You good?
- Yeah.
- Staying out of trouble?
- Trying my best, you know.
[Frankie] Get in here.
Let me see your face.
Uh, what's good?
Oh, you know, counting the
seconds till happy hour commences.
Where you been at?
I called you Wednesday.
Yeah, I know, I'm sorry.
I, um, I've been stuck
on this fucking Task assignment.
Ooh, are you seeing anybody?
I met this girl at the gym, Chloe.
- She's, uh, she's
- Frankie, never again.
- You remember the last time you set me up?
- What?
Cat lady? What cat lady?
You know. You know.
Well, Chloe hates cats.
It's the first question
I asked her, "Do you like cats?"
- Mm.
- "Mm."
What are you making that sound for?
You wanna be alone
the rest of your life?
I'm not alone.
I got you, I got the boys.
You're the only guy I know
who's actively trying not to get laid.
Yeah.
What's going on?
Listen, some, um
Some things are gonna come out.
About me.
After all these years,
they found out it was you
stealing from the collection
basket at Immaculate Heart?
[whispering] No.
Jesus, Ant, what is it?
You remember when Mom got sick?
And we wanted to move her
out of that home,
that that, uh,
shitty place in Crum Lynne?
And we found that spot in Radnor
with the view of the garden.
Yeah, your, uh, your friend
knew somebody?
Yeah, I didn't
I didn't have a friend.
I I paid the money.
Just like when this house
came on the market,
and you and the boys
needed to get away from Chris.
It wasn't some, uh, some
colleague giving us a deal.
I I paid the money.
Uh, money I got doing things for people
I shouldn't have been involved with.
And, uh, and now, 'cause of me
this girl got killed.
[whispering]
Oh, my God.
Uh, and and
you're saying you're saying
the police say they know?
Nah, they don't know that.
I'm gonna I'm gonna tell 'em.
Yeah, you just just
if you wait just a second.
[whispering]
I can't, Frankie.
I can't live with it no more.
I'm suffocating, you know.
[nephew]
Mom, you ready?
Uh, just get in the car,
I'll be right out.
[nephew]
You just said that we're late.
Get in the car! [softly] Christ.
Go, fuckin' be with the boys.
I'll catch up with you later.
[whispering]
Anthony
I know who you are.
Alright? No matter
what they say, I know.
[footsteps receding]
[Tom] Is anyone here ever after hours?
[ranger] No.
We roll out about sunset,
about eight or nine o'clock.
I sent a few of my guys out scouring
- after you called this morning.
- [Tom] Mm-hmm?
Casey's the one who found it.
And how are we
just discovering this now?
We've got over 50 miles
of trails out here.
If you're not looking for
something, you're not gonna find it.
Did you run the plates?
Yeah, it came back to a car
reported stolen that night.
[Tom] Mm.
[Aleah grunting]
- [car creaking]
- [Aleah] Okay.
- Tom?
- Mm?
[sighs] Looks shot.
Doubtful we're pulling anything off it.
[sighs]
Hey, how many acres you say
you have up here?
[ranger]
Thirty-five hundred.
That time of night all the way out here?
How many phones you think
pinged off these cell towers?
Not many.
[Tom] Let's pull the records,
see what we find.

What's the plan, Per?
[Perry Dorazo]
Hey.
I don't think it's smart for us
to stay here much longer.
I've been thinkin' about that bag.
Robbie sold those drugs
before he ever got up there.
It makes sense, right?
We think they're missin',
we don't go lookin'.
If he sold 'em, then where's the money?
Could only be one place.
Maeve's.
Call Breaker.
Tell him to meet us in Allentown
off the turnpike.
We'll pay her a visit.
[Breaker]
Whoa, whoa, wait.
Where'd you find the bag?
What do you mean, nothing was in it?
[sighs]
What's at Maeve's house?
- Alright, I'll grab Donna's car.
- [phone flips closed]
- Holy shit.
- [Maeve] I know. I'm freaking out.
[sighs]
[sniffling]
So, this woman just
showed up at your door
and was like,
"Here's a million dollars"?
Yeah. Never met her before in my life.
So, what are you gonna do with it?
I don't know.
[sighs deeply]
Part of me wants to hand it
over to the cops
and just be done with it all, you know?
But the other part of me
knows that Robbie died
so we could have it.
Maybe I shouldn't fuck that up.
So, keep it.
Yeah, but somebody has to know
this money's out there.
Somebody has to be lookin' for it.
Hide it.
Somewhere close to the house
where you can keep watch over it.
Put it there, and wait.
Six months. A year.
And if the cops
come looking and find it
well, you didn't know it
was there. Robbie hid it.
[chickens clucking]

[sighs]
then you go
and make a new life with the kids.
[Tom] [muttering]

[Kathleen McGinty] W-Why am
I looking at cell tower records?
We pulled that from a tower
in Wissahickon Park.
[Aleah] That number pinged at 11:03 p.m.
The phone belongs to Ray Lyman.
Wait. Ray Lyman?
How'd his phone get down there?
Weren't we using it
to communicate with Cliff
- at Bailey Park?
- No. We thought we were.
[groaning] Oh, God.
Whatever you two are gettin' at,
I wish to fuck you'd

The phone was swapped by Grasso.
That's why Cliff
never showed that night.
- Oh, my God.
- [Tom] And the only way to prove it is to get
into that evidence locker,
which we no longer have access to
because of the pending
OPS investigation.
Come on, Kath,
you know how these cases go.
Without that, Grasso's gonna walk.
I know. I'm just fuckin' annoyed

Uh, Breaker's been hiding out here.
I heard him talking on the phone
this morning to Jayson.
About Maeve.
Maeve. Who's Maeve?
Billy Prendergrast's daughter.
Just a young girl, she's got
nothing to do with any of this.
Oh, okay.
He said they were gonna

Does your brother like animals?
- Ethan? Yeah.

He was the neighborhood
dog walker for years.
One time, Mrs. Heinrich's dog
went missing.
- You remember that?
- Yeah.
Eventually, we all sort of
gave up looking,
but not Ethan.
He stayed out all night
with his backpack
and his headlamp.
And he found that dog in Chatham Park.
Oh! I am starving.
Should we have lunch?
Uh, yeah. Uh, we have
peanut butter and jelly.
- And we have
- Could we maybe go to Dairy Queen?
Oh, my God.
- [Emily] What?
- [Sam] What?
I have not had DQ in so long.
- [Emily and Sam laughing]
- And why not?
Well, I had a baby.
And, um, when you have a baby
like, weird things happen to your body,
and all you want is for it
to go back to the way it was
before you had a baby.
And the way to do that
is to not eat sundaes.
And I don't know why
why I'm telling you all this.
[Emily and Sam laughing] -

In 2009, my wife Susan and I
became foster parents
to Ethan and his younger sister, Emily.
Two years after that, we filed

Ethan was an energetic boy,

One teacher said we should consider

Visual processing disorder.
Dyslexia. Fine motor deficits.

Early intervention was

She wasn't the type

We started him in occupational therapy

When Ethan was 12,

The pediatrician

The diagnosis was
disruptive mood dysregulation.
He threw chairs at teachers.

from our neighbor's swing set.
Lashed out at Susan,
and me, and his sisters.
Why?
Voices told him to, he explained.
Teachers filed troubling reports.
I I'm ashamed to say
I refused to wear a name tag
at Back to School night
in fear of someone
identifying me as Ethan's father.
And weekends were the hardest.
Two full days where
we'd have him all on our own.
We held our heads in our hands,
desperately trying to figure him out.
But Susan, Ethan's tireless champion,
found new doctors. Patient, kind ones.
And Risperdal was the great calmer.
It stilled the voices
inside Ethan's head.
He got a job at the YMCA.
Met friends there.
Kenny. Doyle. Evans.
For a time
we allowed ourselves
to, uh, to see a future.
But the pandemic hit hard.
There was a Risperdal shortage.
The voices returned angrier than before.
And on May 15th, those poisonous voices
told him to kill Susan.
And that incident now threatens
to define his entire life.
There was also joy.
There was so much joy.
When he first called me Dad.
Our trip to New York City,
when he bought 25 hamburgers
and he handed 'em out
to homeless people.
And when Mrs. O'Keefe,
that lovely, understanding art teacher,
pulled me aside
and told me what a bright light
a bright light of a child he was.
Ethan
I don't want you to live
with the shame anymore.
Ethan, look at me.
Ethan, please.
Son, please look at me.
I forgive you.
I love you.
I'm not here today to tell the court
when my son should be released.
That's not up to me.
I'm here today to let you know, Ethan,
that when that day comes, I'll be ready.
Come straight home.
I'll be there waiting for you.
Thank you, Your Honor.
[gentle music playing]
[metal squeaking lightly]
[birdsong]
[Tom laughing]
Oh, my God, look at that one.
[Sam] How do you know they're ready?
[Tom] Okay, well, see this one?
See how it has a, uh, root
sticking out of the ground?
That's what we're looking for.
- Make a fist, let's see.
- This right?
So, that's about
the perfect size for a beet.
Measure it against there.
What do you think?
- [Sam] It's good.
- [Tom] Yeah.
Now, give it a little wiggle
by the greens and then pull it.
There we go. Nice, huh?
People eat these?
[chuckles]
That's what you said about cucumbers.
Now, look at you.
Okay, now take all this in.
I'm gonna grab a couple more,
and then we'll make that
for dinner tonight.
- [Sam] Okay.
- Alright?
[footsteps approaching]
[guardian] Hello again.
Knocked up front, no answer.
Hope you don't mind.
Ah, no. Just just a second.
[guardian] Good news.
We finally found a family for the boy.
I don't know what to do, Daniel.
Do you wanna know what I'm thinking?
[Tom chuckles]
If I say no, are we gonna
talk about it anyway?
- If you don't want to talk about it, we don't talk about it.
- No. No, no, no.
No, no, no, let's talk about it.
You want to talk about it?
I'm not sure you are in a place
where you can meet the needs
of a young boy as he grows and matures.
Especially when Ethan comes home,
and knowing how much
he's going to need you.
- Hm.
- What?
Here I was thinking
I'd done a good thing.
You have done a good thing.
But have you done that good thing
for the boy or for yourself?
[sighs softly]
I know how close you two have become,
and I know what I'm asking is hard.
[Tom] I I don't even know what
it is that you're you're asking me.
[Daniel] To be unselfish
with your love, Tom.
To recognize that what's best for you
may not be what's best for the boy.
[Tom] And how do I know
what's best for him?
[gentle music playing]
[faint footsteps]
[car door closes]
[soft, uplifting music playing]
[softly] Come on.
[Tom] [softly] Ready?
- Yeah.
- Okay, here we go.
[door opens]
[Wyatt] How long is it
gonna take to get there?
GPS says six hours, seven minutes.
Six hours?!
Chicken butthole!
Wyatt, grow up, will ya?
[camera clicking]
[Harper] What'd you do that for?
To remember.
I'm afraid I'm not gonna
remember any of it.
Yeah, I used to think that way too.
About my dad.
It's not true.
[kiss smacking]

[engine starting]
Everyone ready?

[birdsong]
[birdsong continues]
[gentle music playing]
[sighs]

[birdsong continues]
[birdsong continues]
[uplifting music playing]
[birdsong continues]
[uplifting music playing]
[birdsong continues]
[birdsong continues]
