[Kenta groaning]
[breathing heavily]
[gasps]

Ah!
It's an angel.
AMEKU M.D.:
DOCTOR DETECTIVE
TENIKAI GENERAL HOSPITAL
[door slides opens]
Taka.
- Hey.
- Ah?
Tell me what you want, Kuma.
Getting straight to the point,
as usual, huh?
It's rare to receive a visit
from you, Dr. Kumakawa.
Is something wrong?
There's actually something
I'd like Investigative
Pathology to look into.
[gasps]
[sighs]
POST-OP PROGRESS GOOD.
THEN, SUDDEN VOMITING.
[KUMAKAWA] Last week,
a number of boys fell sick
one after another.
And they all happen
to stay in the same room.
The cause is unknown,
and it was right before
they were due to be discharged.
The first of the patients
was Katsuji Sekihara,
ten years old.
He was admitted
with acute appendicitis.

However, about a week ago,
a little after 9:00 p.m.,
he started vomiting
uncontrollably.
Seemingly out of nowhere.
The next patient was
eleven-year-old Yuichi Sakuta.
He was admitted
with mycoplasma pneumonia.
His symptoms had improved,
and we were considering
discharging him.
But four days ago,
around 11:00 p.m.,
he suddenly suffered
an asthma attack.
[Yuichi coughs]
[KUMAKAWA]
The most recent patient
is twelve-year-old
Atsushi Fuyumoto.
He has WPW syndrome.
He was admitted after having
frequent arrhythmia attacks.
We had given him
sufficient treatment
and planned to discharge him,
until something happened
eight days ago.
[Atsushi groaning]
[KUMAKAWA]
In the middle of the night,
he collapsed in the hallway
complaining of pain.
We checked his pulse,
and it was slow and irregular.
But the symptoms
subsided quickly.

Taka, I was hoping
you could try talking to them
and give them an examination.

[TAKAO]
I'll pass.
Wait, I didn't think you would
turn down his request.
There's actually another thing
I wanted to talk to you about.
There have been
sightings of an angel
in the pediatric ward.
Huh?
An angel?
[KUMAKAWA] Things have been
a bit more chaotic
over in the pediatric ward
because of it.
[YU]
Wait, what do you mean by that?
Ten days ago,
a patient saw something.
He claimed an angel had
visited him late at night.
A light woke him up
and he saw someone
standing there, glowing.
[YU] So, he saw somebody
bathed in light?
What made him think
it was an angel?
The child said the figure
looked exactly like the angel
from one of his picture books.
It's possible
he was imagining things.
[KUMAKAWA] I thought the same
until five days ago.
A nurse passed by
the child's room
and looked inside.
She also saw a shining
angel-like figure.
And after its
reported appearance,
all three of the previously
mentioned cases occurred.
You think this angel sighting
is connected somehow?
Taka.
Don't worry about
the boy with the book.
He isn't going to be
on the ward tonight.
So, at the very least,
could you please come by
and examine
the three other kids?
We need you.
TENIKAI GENERAL
HOSPITAL INVESTIGATIVE
PATHOLOGY DIRECTOR
AMEKU TAKAO
All right, fine.
[elevator dinging]
[footfall]
Um, Dr. Takao?
What's wrong?
Nothing.
Don't worry about it.
- Hmm.
- [NURSE] Kazuya in Room 708
[MAI] Dr. Kumakawa
is currently occupied
with outpatients.
But fear not, I've been asked
to accompany you.
[NURSE 8A]
Understood.
[MAI] All three of the affected
patients he mentioned
are currently staying
in Room 703.
I should probably let you know.
These kids
we've been having a little bit
of a problem with them.
[YU]
How so?
[MAI] They're currently
the oldest kids in the ward,
and unfortunately,
they've developed
quite the attitude.
Things have gotten
so bad lately,
they've been stealing stuff
from the other kids here
and making fun of everybody
for how they look.
That sounds pretty bad.
[MAI]
Because of their behavior,
most people aren't
huge fans of them.
There are kids, parents,
and even members of the staff
who hold grudges
against those three.
I don't wanna cast
any suspicion,
but it's possible one of them
could be behind this.
Are you implying that
somebody would try to harm
those three on purpose?
How would they even do it?
Don't ask me!
That's why we called
the Investigative
Pathology Department.

Ah!
[MAI]
Here we are.
We're coming in!
[knocking]
Hey!
- [gasps]
- What the--
[all laughing]
[KATSUJI]
Did you see how he jumped?
Cut it out, that isn't
very nice, you know?
Yeah, whatever
you gyaru doctor.
[MAI] And what about me
makes me a gyaru, exactly?
I mean, you totally
have the look.
You been
to the tanning salon lately?
Nope.
And never have!
- Wait, really?
- [MAI] What was that?
[YU] [chuckles]
Oh, uh, nothing.
Who's this?
Your boyfriend or something?
Absolutely not.
He happens to be a doctor
from the Department
of Investigative Pathology.
[YU]
I am.
And we'd like to perform
an examination.
Um, hey, Dr. Takao?
Why'd you open the window?
It's cold, ya know.
What are you looking at?
[footfall]
Hey, uh
are you just gonna leave?
Yeah, so what?
What about the examination?
What about it?
I already looked through
their results beforehand.
[YU] Then why did we bother
coming down here?
There was something
I wanted to confirm.
- And that was?
- Hm? Dr. Yamada.
What's Investigative Pathology
doing here?
We asked them to examine
the patients in Room 702.
[YAMADA]
That so?
Well, I'm about to go
discuss it with Dr. Kumakawa.
But Atsushi Fuyumoto
- will likely be discharged
in two days. -Huh?
But we still
don't why he fell ill.
And you're okay
with discharging him?
Listen, I'm his attending
physician, okay?
We've monitored him
with an ECG machine
and there haven't been
any recurrences lately.
[YU] But what if
something happens
after he's discharged?
[YAMADA] We'll put a Holter
ECG monitor on him
tomorrow afternoon.
Once we confirm
he has no issues,
we'll proceed
with discharging him.
Anyway, if you'll excuse me.
[Mai and Yu sighs]
Dr. Takao, you won't
be able to examine him
if he isn't a patient anymore.
[TAKAO]
If there aren't any issues,
then that should be fine.
- [Yu gasps]
- [MAI] Huh?
- [MAI] Umm.
- [Yu] Ah?
I know.
We probably should try taking
a look at the room next door
where the angel appeared.
It should be quick,
and there's no one
in there right now.
[footfall]
[door opens]
So it's a private room?
Yeah, the kid's mother
specifically requested it
so she can stay overnight.
The patient is Kenta Miki.
He's only eight years old.
He's currently undergoing
palliative care
for terminal leukemia.
Kenta said
that an angel came to visit him
to take him
all the way up to heaven
when it was time.
Apparently, that's what it says
in the picture book he likes.
So, an angel appeared in here?
Where was it?
It showed up around
where I'm standing right now.
There was this bright light,
and then he saw a shadow
of a person with wings, see?
I see.
Hm.
- [YU] Ah?
- [MAI] Hm?
[YU]
You're done?
[TAKAO]
Yeah, sure am.
Please hold on a minute,
Dr. Takao!
Surely you've figured out
something by now.
Do you have some idea
about what's going on here?
[footfall]
- [Kenta gasps]
- [TAKAO] Ah!
- [Kumakawa gasps]
- Dr. Kid, you're back!
Hang on, why are you
[laughs]
You came to visit me!
I I just
Dr. Kid, let's go read
picture books again.
Ah!
[KENTA]
Come on, doc, promise?
[chuckles]

[sighs]
Huh?
[deep breath]
- [Yu gasps]
- [MAI] Huh?
[KUMAKAWA]
Taka!
[Takao trembling]
[Kenta sighs]

AMEKU M.D.:
DOCTOR DETECTIVE
[all gasp]
Why did Dr. Kid leave?
Did she forget me?
Is that the reason she left?
Being a doctor means
that she's probably super busy
with work all the time,
so why don't we ask her again
when she comes back?
'Kay.
[MAI] Hey, Kenta,
I wanna see your book.
Can you show me?
Please?
Yeah, sure.
You really like this book,
don't you?
[KENTA]
Uh-huh.
I lost it once,
but then I got another one.
[MAI]
Angels.
[KENTA] And guess what?
I saw it!
It came to visit me,
so it's real!
An angel showed up
in my room one night!
One day, the angel's
gonna take me up to heaven!
- Ah?
- Kenta.
[KENTA]
Mom?
[KEIKO]
Angels don't exist.
You were probably
just seeing things.

[KENTA]
But, I really
- [door opens]
- Uh?

- Hm?
- Ah?
Hm!
Um?
[sighs]

Doctor, is there
any possible way
we could change rooms?
[KUMAKAWA]
No, I'm sorry.
Nothing else is available.
[KEIKO] Having those kids
next door isn't good for him.
They make him uncomfortable.
[weeping]
And his picture book.
Hmm.
[KUMAKAWA]
I understand.
Why don't you take a break?
I'm sure Kenta is tired, too.

[YU]
Tell me.
What did those three
do to Kenta, anyway?
It happened back when Kenta
was in the playroom one day.
Atsushi came up behind him
and took his cap off his head.
Then they made fun of him.
[ATSUSHI]
Check it out!
Look at how shiny his head is!
[laughs]
[ATSUSHI]
What's wrong with him?
[MAI] Kenta lost his hair
because of the chemotherapy
treatments he's been
going through.
Unfortunately, the trio thought
that was funny
and caused a scene.
[Yu sighs]
What happened to the first
copy of his book?
Good question.
I believe that was about
three days afterwards.
Kenta left his room,
and when he came back,
his favorite picture book
was missing.
But the next day,
we found it in the playroom.
It was torn to shreds
and tossed into the trash.
ANGEL'S NIGH
And those three kids
were behind it?
We don't have any proof,
but yeah, we suspect
that it was them.
Understandably,
after that incident,
Kenta's mother began
to get really anxious.
[Yu sighs]
[KUMAKAWA] [sighs]
Excuse me.
- [YU] Ah?
- [MAI] Hm?
[KUMAKAWA]
Got a minute?
[sighs]
This is all my fault.
I honestly didn't expect
Taka and Kenta
to run into each other.
Doctor do Dr. Takao
and Kenta have some sort
of history together?
[KUMAKAWA]
He's Taka's friend.
Wait, they're friends?
Yeah, they are.
Two years ago,
when Taka worked as a resident
in the pediatric ward
she argued with the attending
physicians all the time
and she struggled
to interact with patients.
It was tough for her back then.
In the middle of all that,
Kenta came for
an emergency examination
because a late-night
nosebleed wouldn't stop.
Looks like it's finally done.
[KENTA]
Hm.
[KEIKO]
Thank you very much.
[KUMAKAWA] Of course,
And that should do it--
- [TAKAO] Hold on a second.
- [TOGETHER] Huh?
[KUMAKAWA] Taka was also
on duty with me that night
and she noticed Kenta had
a light patch of purpura
on his left leg.

So, we ran more tests.
He was diagnosed with acute
lymphoblastic leukemia.
He was hospitalized
and underwent chemotherapy.
And what happened
between Dr. Takao and Kenta
after that?
He took a liking to her.
- Huh?
- What?
Dr. Kid!
[KUMAKAWA] Naturally, Taka
was pretty hesitant at first.
But she slowly opened up.
They grew closer over time.
She started visiting Kenta
in his room
and even had
some chats with him.
[MAI] And that's how
they became friends, huh?
[KUMAKAWA] During Taka's
stressful residency
you could say Kenta was
a source of comfort for her.

[TAKAO]
Here, I got you a present.
[KENTA]
Wow! Cool!
[sighs]
How do I look?
[TAKAO]
Great.
Huh?
[chuckles]
[KUMAKAWA] He still treasures
the cap Taka gave him.
It's the same one
you saw him wearing today.

The chemotherapy was effective,
and he was discharged
after he was evaluated
as being in complete remission.
I'M ALL BETTER NOW.
THANK YOU, DR. KID
[YU]
But the cancer came back?
[KUMAKAWA]
Yeah.
We found leukemia cells during
a routine bone marrow exam
in January of this year,
and despite everything,
he was diagnosed
with a recurrence of leukemia.
We tried everything we could,
but it was no use.
And we don't know
when Kenta's health
will take a turn for the worse.
I get it now.
That's why Dr. Takao
has been behaving so strangely.
Kenta was supposed
to be gone for the night,
so I thought she could come by
and do some examinations.
But he suddenly
came down with a fever
and had to return
to the hospital.
Will you please apologize
to Taka for me?
[YU]
Of course, sir.
[door opens]
[door closes]
[footfall]
Ah?
[sighs]
Huh?
What are you doing?
You just gonna stay
curled up there
for the whole night?
[sighs]
I really messed up.
Uh-huh, you sure did.
[TAKAO] I didn't mean
to do that to him.
My mind just went
blank back there.
[YU] Dr. Kumakawa felt bad
about what happened
when he asked for your help
and wanted to apologize.
[TAKAO]
He doesn't have to.
I already knew
what was going on,
so I tried
to brace myself for it.
I tried, but I still hurt
Kenta's feelings.
[YU]
Try to relax.
And once you do,
why don't you try
to go see Kenta again?
[Takao sighs]
- [TAKAO] Kotori.
- Yeah?
What is it?
[TAKAO]
Have you ever had a patient
who was younger than you
die under your care?
[YU]
I have.
I worked in surgery
for five years.
[TAKAO]
Well I haven't.
[YU]
Is that so?
[TAKAO]
Hey, Kotori?
Yes?
[TAKAO]
Any day now,
Kenta is going to die.
Yeah, I was
informed about that.
[TAKAO] He's only been
alive for eight years.
He's just a kid,
and his life is already over.
I've tried, but I
I can't do anything
to help him.
Even though
I've crammed my brain
full of medical knowledge
from all over the world,
there's nothing I can do!
That isn't true at all,
and you know it.
At this point,
you can still go see him
and talk with him.
We need to listen
to our patients,
discuss their illnesses
openly and honestly.
And be flexible.
What we do from there,
it just depends.
[TAKAO]
Be flexible, huh?

I don't think
I'm capable of doing that.
I can't read
what the other person wants.
So, what do I do?

If I went to visit Kenta now,
I'd just end up hurting
his feelings even more.

Before I even realize
I'm doing it,
I might make someone
who's already suffering enough
go through even more
unnecessary pain.
That's why
I should just stay here.

It's better if I don't see
Kenta anymore.

That's it, then?
You're just gonna run away?
- [TAKAO] No, I--
- [YU] You are.
[YU] If you stay here, that's
exactly what you're doing.
You're running away
and leaving Kenta alone
and those mystery cases
in the pediatric ward unsolved.
I'm telling you,
I'm not running--
No, I'm telling you.
Stop giving me excuses
just because
this is a painful situation.
That might be acceptable
if you were a normal person,
but you're not.
You're a doctor.
Which means you have
to be able to handle that pain
and shoulder these burdens
no matter what.

And like it or not,
you have to accept the reality
that there are people
you just can't save.
So, get up.
You can't leave
things unresolved.
Do it for Kenta
and those other three kids
in pediatrics.

[TAKAO]
Those other kids will be fine.
They're not in any danger.
[gasps]
Do you know what's been
happening in the ward?
You do, don't you?

[TAKAO]
Leave me alone.
[breathing heavily]
Huh?
[gasps]
[KENTA]
It came to visit me again.
[trembling]
[sighs]
[MAI] Please make sure
to confirm it
on your next round.
Yes, understood.
- About the patient in Room 701.
- [phone ringing]
ROOM 703:
FUYUMOTO ATSUSHI
[NURSE 8C]
Uh, Dr. Konoike, here, I can--
[MAI]
What's wrong, Atsushi?
[NURSE 8C]
It's Atsushi again.
What's happened this time?
[ATSUSHI] [groaning]
I-It hurts.
- [gasps]
- [ATSUSHI] Please, help me.
[panting]
Atsushi!
[grunting]
It hurts.
- [MAI] Atsushi!
- [Atsushi grunting]
[gasps]

[gasps]
There's no pulse.
Go call a code blue
immediately.
- [NURSE 8C] Right.
- [MAI] And get the AED!
[NURSE 8D]
Understood!
[MAI]
Atsushi, hang in there!
[panting]
