How's Ms. Peterson doing?
Not good.
Her kidney function is getting worse.
Mmm… You look tense.
Let me help you loosen up those deltoids.
[chime dings]

you got right?
I'm literally waiting for you

Still offering me attending.
Danny, what did Cruz say?
There's a chance I might get dropped
from the program.
- It's not 'cause of the fight, though.
- What is it for?
The HR claim.
Xander's parents want me gone,
and… now Cruz has cause.
- [Elijah] Why'd she change her mind?
- Um…
I don't really want to speak for her,
but… we met with HR,
and… yeah, it's over.
Sorry, I… I don't understand.
Why did you drop your complaint?
It's…
For the last year, it's like I've had
this huge weight on my chest.
And after the residents' retreat,
I really just needed somebody
unbiased to tell me that
what was going on wasn't right.
And… I'm glad I went,
because it felt so good
to hear that I wasn't overreacting,
that I wasn't crazy, that this…
this weight… wasn't something
that I had made up in my head,
because that's how he made me feel
every time I talked to him about it.
But I didn't drop it
because it wasn't true.
I dropped it because I realized that…
what they can offer me
isn't what I need anymore.
What I need is…
acknowledgement, from him.
What I need is…
is for him to apologize.
You still get to be her boss,
and everybody's happy?
Well… [grunts]
[Harper] And if he doesn't apologize,
you're okay working with him?
Yeah. In spite of everything, I loved him.
I… I still do love him.
And I know that that might be hard
to understand… [inhales] …but it is true.
I never wanted him to lose his job.
[Harper] Yeah.

Okay.
[Fiona] What?
What?

Oh my God.
I know. We're monsters.
What's the first thing
you're gonna do when you get home?
Go out?
Very funny.
[both laughing]
I told Ria she can come over
and see me later.
She can.
Is there anything else, Mom?
No.
No.
I have paperwork to do.
[in Spanish] I love you, Mommy.
And I love you, my love.
[in English] What's happening?
Why can't I see?
It's called orbital compartment syndrome.
The pressure in your eye
is preventing the flow of blood
to your optic nerve and retina,
and we have to relieve the pressure.
How are you gonna do that?
She's gonna do something
called a lateral canthotomy.
It'll relieve the pressure behind the eye
and save your vision.
- Penny.
- I'm here. I'm right here.
[Fiona] Thank you.
Okay.
Let's get you fixed up.
That was dope. I've never seen
one of those done before.
Thank you, Harper.
So, uh, did you talk to Phillips?
Yeah.
I did. His, uh…
He has no idea
his parents are trying to fire me.
Did you tell him?
No.
I didn't.
Why not?
If his parents want me gone,
he's not gonna be able to stop them.
- Maybe that's what he wants you to think.
- Harper.
I know him. I know his parents.
They’re doing all this shit
on some higher level,
and he would be devastated
if he found out.
So, you're just giving up?
You don't care if you lose your job?
Of course I care.
- Then what are you gonna do?
- I don't know.
I don't… I don't know what I'm gonna do.
I don't know if I can fix this.
[light music plays]
[Harper sighs]
[music fades out]
[dispenser whirring]
- More serious than we thought.
- Yeah.
Why don’t you come with me?
We'll go talk to the family.
[unsettled music playing]
- [Soriano] Mr. and Mrs. Washington?
- [woman] Yeah.
[music fades]
How is she, Doctor?
Well, she's out of surgery.
Yeah, she's in critical condition,
but she's stable at the moment.
She had a deep infection in her abdomen.
She had some issues with bleeding
that we were able to control.
Is she going to be okay?
[Soriano] We're hopeful that she will be.
We're doing everything we can for her.
How soon will you know
if she's gonna be okay?
We're keeping her closely monitored.
We really should know a lot more
in the next day or two. Okay?
In the meantime I'm sorry.
This is Dr. Cole.
He's my surgical resident.
And Dr. Cole is gonna be running point
on Nia's post-surgical care.
- Tom Cole?
- [Soriano] Yes.
Oh, you've already met.
Nia's told us a lot about you.
Yeah, well, um… I'm her doctor.
I like to think that we've become friends.
You're a lot more than friends.
Can we call you, Doctor?
Yes, absolutely.
Of course. I'm here for you.
And like I said, we should know
a lot more very soon, okay?
- Thank you so much.
- You're very welcome. Okay.
[tense music builds]
- Dr. Soriano. I--
- Shh… Shut up.
You're gonna tell me
exactly what the hell that was.
Honestly, I don't know.
Was she implying
you're romantically involved
with a patient you just operated on?
No. Well, um, what she said
was not completely accurate.
