Something Undone (2023) s01e10 Episode Script

The Devil You Know

(crickets chirping)
(frying pan rattling)
(frying pan rattling)
(water sloshing)
I'm sorry.
(utensils clanking)
Yeah. Same here.
Smells good.
(chuckling)
Shakshuka.
That's nice.
Are you going to genesis today?
No.
Should we do something together?
Um, yeah.
Yeah, we could, um
We could rent mopeds,
We could explore
the island a bit?
I'd like that.
Yeah?
It's delicious.
Good!
Any package yet?
No.
Hey, what did you
find on christina?
What do you mean?
Come on. You expect me to
believe that you didn't look
Into her after that
gong show the other night?
She's pretty boring.
Just a really annoying
social media presence
And a ten-year old dui.
Dui?
Yeah, she got into
a nasty car accident.
It's how she got the scar.
What's the matter?
Nothing.
Where are you going?
Out.
Didn't we just make plans?
Can't.
Jo!
What, farid?! What?!
Your pills.
(glass slamming)
Ah!
(papers rustling)

(clattering)
(sniffing)
(clattering)

(sighing)
You're a liar.
Where did you get this?
You're a fraud.
Are you okay?
Fuck you.
Okay, this is really unlike you.
How would you know?
Because I'm your friend.
No, you're not.
I'm trying to help you, jo.
By getting me off my meds?
That was your decision.
You asked me to trust you.
You asked beth to trust you.
Beth was deeply troubled.
She was addicted to drugs.
You knew that
when you checked her in.
We get a lot of clients
with histories of addiction.
For many of them,
the program is enough.
And you promised
her it would be.
She got better!
She was a completely
different person. I hired her.
You convinced a depressed drug
addict to go off her meds.
- No.
- And then,
When her depression came back
and she started using again,
You gave up on her.
We have a strict policy
and she knew that, okay?
You kicked her
out of the only community
That could have helped her!
Why? Because it looked bad?
She was your friend,
and you care more about
Protecting your fucking money
than a person's life!
Was I next?
Make good on beth by fixing me?
Are you done?
She's dead.
She's had od'd somewhere,
all alone.
- It is your fault.
- Stop!
I am not responsible
for her decisions!
I am not!
What do you want me to do?
Let genesis burn to
the ground overnight?
We are a lifeline for people.
I'm not a bad person.
She just couldn't stop.
Please--
I'm--
Hey, hey, hey.
(crying)

You forgot to take your pills.
You saw me take them.
No. Your real pills, jo.
What are you doing?
The last time you did this
you tried to kill yourself.
Do you understand that?
Yeah.
The only outcome is to end up
Back where we were
six months ago,
Or god forbid worse!
It's my decision. Not yours.
No.
We agreed on this.
Things have changed.
You didn't think
I deserved to know that?
You don't know how bad it was.
So tell me.
You weren't listening!
So, tell me now!
(scoffing)
I put my life on hold for you.
I spent six fucking months
holding your hand
And telling you I would
never give up on you.
I know.
But we had one rule.
You take the pills, jo.
We agreed on it.
Or what?
What if I decide I no longer
want to be medicated?
Then you can do it on your own.
Okay.
(sniffling)
(sighing)
Okay.
We're here for you.
To help you!
We had an agreement!
You said that.
Jesus christ,
I'm such a fucking idiot.
Why am I trying
so hard to save this?
All you care about is yourself!
Where's the box?
What box?
You opened it.
You know I was right!
You know about rose, don't you?
Jo, you are
making things up again.
I haven't seen this box.
(phone vibrating)
Hello?
(beeping)
(sighing)
(clattering)
(door closing)
(crying)
(hyperventilating)

(hyperventilating)
(hyperventilating)

(hyperventilating)
- (twig snapping)
- (gasping)
Man:
Hey. Do you need any help?

(car door closing)
Thank you.
How's your chest feeling?
Better.
You know what?
There's a clinic nearby.
Why don't you let me
take you there?
Just to be safe.
I think I'm fine.
Really. It's okay, you can go.
Oh, I don't know
how I feel about that.
You have somebody at home?
No.
Tell you what.
Church services don't start
For the next hour and a bit,
And something tells me
you could use a listening ear.
I'm not religious.
Oh, no. That's not a--
I won't try to convert you.
I work with all kinds of folks.
People dealing with
addiction, grief, or
Simple matters of the heart.
Matters of the heart?
Yeah. Like this one guy
I've been counselling for
The last week who's been hiding
an affair from his partner.
Heavy stuff.
You'll leave lighter.
Thank you.
Watch your step.
(knocking)
taylor? It's farid.
(knocking)
taylor! Taylor!
Taylor. Hey, taylor.
- (groaning)
- hey, hey.
- The fuck?
- No, no. It's okay. It's okay.
Look, that missing woman,
beth danvers, did you know her?
Who?
She was addicted to fentanyl.
Did she ever come here
looking for it?
Yeah, fuck. Beth, sure.
She spent time here?
Yeah. She lived here for
a few weeks at least.
And then what?
I don't know. She was gone.
Well, what happened to her?
I dunno.
Probably od'd. Happens.
Hey, man.
Look at me. Look at me.
What?!
Did beth know pastor cape?
Yeah.
She spend time with him?
Yeah, man. He really liked her.
Hey, why?!

Hello.
Farid?
What are you doing here?
Jo had a panic attack.
She's fine now, don't worry.
Was I expecting you, farid?
What, you've met?
Farid and I have been
getting to know each other.
I've been counselling him
for the last week.
Matters of the heart.
Is something wrong, jo?
Would you excuse me?
You said no secrets.
Uh-oh.
What did you say to her?
I was--
I was only being friendly.
She's a lovely woman, jo.
If a bit troubled.
We were making great
progress until you interrupted.
I think she enjoyed
speaking with me.
Just like beth did?
(sighing)
For the last week I have been
waiting for you to slip up.
Nothing.
I even started to believe
that you had changed.
But you did make a mistake.
Is that so?
You chose the one addict
whose family still cared.
And then you showed up, farid.
What are the odds of that?
I would go after her
if I were you.
You wouldn't want
the wrong man picking her up.
My reach is
as far as god's, farid.
Wherever you go,
whatever you do,
We will be watching.
Go to the police,
make your little podcast?
And one day jo
Just will not come home.
And then you'll
receive parts of her.
Her tongue.
Her eyes.
Her sweet little cunt.
I will see she suffers.
The next ferry is
off the island at noon.
I would be on it if I were you.
Farid: Just pack up
and we'll talk on the ferry.
Jo: Tell me. Tell me what--
what is going on?
Farid:
I'll tell you when we get home.
(chattering indistinctly)

(sighing)
We came here for me, huh?
(horn blowing)
(horn blowing)
(people chattering)
Hi, mom.
Hi, sweetie.
(child speaking indistinctly)

(pinging)
(sighing)
(people chattering)
(chatter continuing)

Pastor cape: What do we do
when we see our neighbours fail?
We take pity on them.
We look deep in our hearts
when we see them sin,
And we forgive,
And we implore them to ask god
to give them the strength
That they might
forgive themselves.
So why?
Why is it that
when we make a mistake,
When we fail, when we sin,
Why is it then that we struggle
so deeply to forgive ourselves?
Are we not also children of god?
If we can forgive those we love,
Are we not deserving
of the same forgiveness?
Jesus said,
"your sins are forgiven.
Your faith has saved you.
Go in peace."
When we live by faith
in god's forgiveness,
We are freed of the shame
we deserve to feel!
And that is
the meaning of forgiveness.
"no more shall every man
teach his neighbour, saying,
'know the lord,'
for they all shall know me,
From the least of them
to the greatest of them,
Says the lord.
For I will forgive
their iniquities,
And their sin
I will remember no more."
