Women in Blue (2024) s01e10 Episode Script

Valentina

[water dripping]
[breathes shakily]
[screaming]
[screaming continues]
WOMEN IN BLUE
The moment he drew and decided
to point a firearm at my forehead,
well, then, I I defended myself
by firing at the accused with a pistol.
The bullet wounds proved to be mortal.
[reporter] Commander.
And Miss Valentina Camacho?
- Uh, her whereabouts are still unknown.
- Is she still alive?
Don't you think that having women police
has posed a risk to Camacho's life?
All right, all right, all right.
Okay, thank you, Commander Herrera.
Come on. Give us all a break, huh?
It's a tough day for all of us, right?
We're on it.
All of us are moving heaven and earth.
No skimping on any power or resources.
I promise you, I will not rest
until we have managed
to bring our colleague back home.
- No more questions. Thank you.
- [reporters clamoring]
We've got to find her
while she's still alive.
Officer Valentina Camacho.
Pay special attention to areas
such as parks, rivers, reservoirs,
or bodies of water that are similar
to where we found the other victims.
If anything turns up,
talk to Lozano, Díaz, or myself.
Okay, then, get the hell out of here.
[Gerardo] Don't worry, María.
We won't rest until we find her.
Is this his biological mother?
Yeah, Benito's mom.
And this is the investigation
that led you to the foster home?
Part of it. The rest is downstairs.
The rest?
It's
This is incredible.
Incredible.
The Undresser used Article 169
and weaponized it
to threaten women who wanted to work.
So, then, the places they work
must be important.
We think so.
[Gerardo] That's why
he took their uniforms, right?
[Díaz] Like a punishment.
[Ángeles] That's right.
Your name is?
My name is Ángeles Cruz.
Great job here, Ángeles.
Good morning, ma'am.
- Did you find her?
- Well, we're working on it.
If we don't quickly find your young lady,
it's your career and open season.
Do you understand
that everyone who doubted
and said this program was an error
would be right?
The Undresser said she was alive, so I
Heroines, not victims.
That was your objective, Emilio.
Let me tell you something.
The failure of this program
won't be my legacy.
No, it won't,
because I'm personally planning to
Listen carefully.
If Valentina Camacho ends up dead,
your hands end up bloody.
And I'm going to personally make sure
that all of Mexico knows about it.
[Gabina] He seemed so normal.
Gabina, listen to me.
That fucker fooled people
before he got to you.
That bastard had a pattern
that he followed to perfection.
The water.
The rope.
The uniforms.
When I saw him on the trolley,
my thought was,
"A coincidence.
How romantic."
But the whole thing was planned out.
That was also in the pattern.
I saw him three times in the trolley.
He didn't have to take it.
He could simply steal a car if needed,
like when he took the one
with the white roof, and the van.
But he rode the trolley
to talk to me and the others.
The station is here,
very close to the stop.
This might be the pattern.
Well, yeah, maybe there's a pattern, but
I still don't see it.
Too much information. We have to refine.
[María] Victims' addresses, out.
[Ángeles] Places they frequented, out.
[María] Family and friends, out.
[Gabina] The addresses
where the victims worked
are located near each one
of the trolley stops.
The Undresser left each body close
to the workplace of his following victim.
Specifically, Lucy was left
near the pool where Nora worked.
Then Nora was left
near the café where Paola worked.
And Paola's the next link,
on the shoe store place.
And Alma was close to the station.
And he had twelve stations left.
Twelve victims.
[Gerardo] The next one would be
on Tacuba Road.
Díaz, Lozano. We'll set up an operation
near Tacuba Road.
- On my way.
- Let's go.
All right, listen up, gentlemen!
From now on, every single bit
of information you have,
every incoming telephone call you get,
any pertinent information that can help,
I want you to bring it straight to them.
Captain Romandía and his officers
are in charge.
- You got that?
- [officers] Yes, sir!
Get going!
[footsteps approach]
María.
Visitors. They say it's urgent.
Come on. Who is it?
Why did you sign up for the police?
Why didn't you listen?
You should not blame them.
A normal A normal life. A quiet life.
C Can't you manage it?
Is that so difficult for you?
Enough, Luz.
What are you doing to find your sister?
The whole station's looking for her.
And before he was
killed, he said
Valentina's still alive.
And he convinced you?
No other option.
We are going to find her.
Promise?
[sobs] You're the
responsible one.
Promise.
I swear to you.
To the east, there's a fountain,
and a park with a drain.
And west there's a hotel. Over.
Perfect. Copy. You heard her.
- Díaz, off to the fountain.
- Got it. Let's go.
The park. I've got the hotel.
Meet up soon. Let's go!
[Díaz] You all search on the west side.
We'll head to the south side of the pond.
Every area with water is key
to finding our colleague. Let's go.
- [search team] Valentina!
- Valentina!
- Valentina!
- [search team] Valentina!
[Díaz] Anything?
Nothing, sir.
Keep looking.
- Keep looking!
- [officer] Let's go.
Tacuba isn't the only place.
Plenty other stops to check out.
It's logical to think that Valentina
would be at the next trolley stop,
because he always stuck to a pattern
and never changed.
But we were an interruption.
And he improvised
when we changed the game around.
He began doing things
a little differently.
He bought the blue rope
instead of making it.
[Octavio] They've combed
almost the whole area
and there's no sign of Valentina.
Perhaps we could look in other places.
It's logical to execute a thoroughly
exhaustive search on one stop
before we go to the next one.
Tacuba Road, Girasol,
Chinampas, José María Mata,
Melchor Ocampo, De la Viga,
Virginia, Azcapotzalco.
Azcapotzalco?
I know that trolley stop.
That's where Benito found
his mother's body.
That's where the water treatment plant is.
[Gabina] What are you talking about?
Jacinta was killed there,
and that's where Morales found him too.
This can't be a coincidence.
We interrupted him
when he felt us closing in.
Maybe he changed the pattern?
But even if he felt pressure,
why change up his known pattern?
He didn't need to.
Because his response
is emotional, Ángeles.
He must have been desperate.
It's almost giving his father an homage
to maybe follow his footsteps.
To kill his mother in the same place
and finish his work.
[sobbing] Help! Help me!
Help!
[sobbing] Help me!
[buzzer sounds]
[machinery clanking]
[creaking, clanking]
[screams]
Help me!
[screaming]
Hang on. Hang on.
[grunts] Ah, fuck.
Valentina has to be here.
[María] Valentina?
- [María] Valentina!
- [Octavio] Valentina!
- Valentina! Valentina!
- [María] Valentina!
[María] Valentina!
[Ángeles] If The Undresser
broke his pattern
and was trying to recreate
his mother's murder,
Valentina might be found
in the tank where she was killed.
How the fuck do we know which tank it is?
Thirty-seven.
Tank 37!
[gasps]
- [Octavio] Here she is!
- [María] Yeah?
[Octavio] Yeah, she's tied up!
Find a tool or something
to drain the tank!
Here.
[Octavio grunts]
Valentina. Hey! Wake up!
- [María] Valentina! Valentina!
- Hey!
Hey, wake up! Valentina!
- [María] Valentina, answer me!
- Come on!
Get out of the way.
I know CPR, María. María, move!
[María sobbing]
[Valentina coughing, spluttering]
["Needle and the Damage Done"
by Neil Young playing]
[song continues]
[song continues]
[reporters clamoring]
[no audible dialogue]
[song continues]
Are you sure?
I'm very sure. I need to be alone.
But
if you need anything, I'm very close.
Tell me and I'll be here.
Thank you.
[song continues]
[song ends]
[breathes shakily]
[no audible dialogue]
Don't worry, because if she needs you,
she'll call you.
She'll call you. You'll see.
Hmm?
[María sighs]
Thank you. Leave it there.
Uh, how are you?
I got fired.
- Oh, what?
- Mmm.
Last night, Cabos fired me
from the company.
Why?
Why doesn't matter. It's not important.
What matters is what he told me.
That night when we had dinner
at his place,
his wife told him nothing.
Not a word about you being a cop.
- Huh?
- That's right.
It means that it was my own fault
I wasn't promoted.
That so?
I'm sorry.
I blamed you, honey.
I don't for a minute regret
what I told him.
Because when he told me that I was fired,
I felt so free, once again.
I felt like like I could make
a new beginning.
Just like you're doing.
Don't you see?
What's What's wrong?
You were so sure it was me,
so so sure of my
I know what I said was horrible.
No, no, not just what you said.
You'd better go away. It's late.
[Alejandro sighs]
[sighs]
[doorbell rings]
Val.
[Emilio] Illegal acquisition
of official documents.
Usurping official functions.
Improper use of the badge.
Obstruction of justice.
Conducting interrogations
without authorization.
False certification
of a member of the press.
Breaking and entering.
Disobeying a direct order from a superior.
Robbery.
Telling lies.
Manipulation.
Abuse of authority.
We didn't mean to go behind anyone's back.
But we were threatened with suspension
when they weren't doing anything.
And how were we going to do our job?
What job?
What the fuck are you talking about?
What job?
Your job couldn't be any simpler!
It wasn't to investigate!
Your job was to smile.
Pose for some photos, and greet tourists.
Fuck! What part of that
did you not understand?
I have to admit
that you got results, though,
albeit illegally.
But how do we get the people
to have any faith in what we do
if not even the first group of women
in the police
can operate without breaking the law?
I had a chat with the District Attorney,
and he wants to use you as an example.
- Four years in prison.
- [María] What?
However, I'm a man known to be delighted
in giving second chances,
and I convinced him
not to press charges against you all.
There's just one small detail.
I need you to sign this document,
and by doing so
you all agree you had nothing to do
with the investigation
or the capture of The Undresser.
If any one of you decides to say anything
that may go against this document,
all four of you
will go to prison.
Fuck this bullshit!
They can go and fuck off!
The people have to know what we did.
Maybe we can beat them.
Uh, maybe, I don't know,
we can go to the media.
No.
What do you mean, no, Valentina?
It's like you told us,
the police are corrupt! They're assholes!
They'll mislead and lie to everybody!
We have to punish them.
They have to tell the truth.
My nephew and niece
won't lose their mother.
They won a long time ago, Gabina.
Why not go sign the form?
[Octavio] And we're not gonna do anything?
Why'd you put yourselves out there?
So no one would find out?
We did it
so The Undresser would stop murdering.
We're successful.
It all began in Santiago Park
on our very first day out,
when while we were looking
for a lost puppy,
we came upon the body of Paola Machado,
victim number six
of The Undresser of Tlalpan.
[Díaz] I think what they're doing to them
is total bullshit.
And you were thinking
nothing would happen to them?
No. But you saw the same thing as me.
Had you ever seen
an investigation board as good?
- Hmm. No, I have not.
- So, then?
Let's call it what it is.
If not for them,
that bastard would still be loose.
[Gerardo] And that's why
it's not worse for them, Díaz.
That prick Escobedo knows what they did.
That's why he's giving 'em an out
and not pressing charges.
- Well, I don't accept it.
- [Gerardo] Me neither, Díaz.
But what the hell do you want me to do?
Are you going to stare at the elevator,
or get on?
- Father.
- Hmm?
I want to quit the police.
Don't make another
of those stupid fucking jokes.
I never should have joined the police.
You know full well.
I never said anything.
I came to work and figured
that in time it would get better.
But it didn't.
And now these past few weeks,
I've been watching Gabina
trying to win over the family.
A family that's hostile
because she can find joy with the police.
You're not worthy of this honor.
It's shameful
how your badge has been wasted.
And, yes, Gabina's balls
have always been bigger than yours.
[engine starts]
[chuckles]
[sighs]
[Emilio] It's not easy for me
to tell you this.
The women police experiment
is now canceled officially speaking.
What?
Why?
I have my orders.
Well, no, forget it. No.
Because we handled
everything you asked for and more.
So we'll explain it all to the First Lady
and see what she wants to do.
She's the one who gave the order.
Tomorrow at noon,
we're going to announce it to the press.
I'm truly sorry.
["The Wind" by Laura Nyro playing]
Back to work, guys. Let's go.
[song continues]
Val.
- What time is it?
- It's early.
[sighs]
[exhales]
I could have saved her.
Saved who?
Natalia.
What do you think they'll say about Mom?
About Dad?
- What will they say about me?
- This has nothing to do with any of you.
Think of Valentina. She's 12.
What example are you setting?
No, no. You don't speak for Valentina.
Valentina is much more intelligent
than what you credit.
I only want what's best for you.
Although right now
you can't see things clearly.
But you're not having a child
out of wedlock.
No.
It's that there's no way
I'll have a child, period.
Are you crazy?
I'm free to decide for myself
what I want and don't wanna do!
If you misunderstand,
that's all your problem.
Here's your freedom.
Go.
Get out of my car.
Get out.
- I hate you.
- I said get out.
[thunder rumbles]
- [tires screeching]
- [crash]
[sobbing] I couldn't see her.
I mean really see her.
[sobbing]
And I don't wanna do the same with you.
[sobbing]
And I don't want you to change a bit.
You're perfect.
And I love you, Valentina.
I love you.
[sobbing]
[María] I love you.
[María] So that's why we went
to Lecumberri, to speak with Goyo Cadenas.
What insight might a murderer have
into the mind of another murderer?
[button clicks]
And?
Suffice it to say
that not only will the previous image
of the police change, Mr. President,
but the whole system of justice in Mexico.
It's a new day for the federal district,
because The Tlalpan Undresser is dead,
and Valentina Camacho
is back with her family.
[applause]
And who do we thank?
We thank all the brave men who wear blue,
who, under my leadership,
carried out an investigation
taken from the pages of a detective novel
of the highest possible level.
I'd like to express my undying gratitude
to one person
without whom The Tlalpan Undresser
would still be mercilessly killing women.
This person is citizen Goyo Cadenas,
who from his cell in the Black Palace
of Lecumberri provided assistance
that would prove crucial
to saving Valentina Camacho.
He, while incarcerated,
graduated as a lawyer.
He became a husband, father of three,
and, more recently,
an honorary police officer.
[reporters clamoring]
And in thanks for all this,
the President has granted him a pardon.
Thirty years ago today,
he entered Lecumberri as a criminal.
Today he exits as a hero.
My freedom speaks volumes
of the country in which I live.
It says that people like me deserve
the opportunity to change.
And finally
finally I cannot, uh, sit down
without giving thanks
to a key person who helped
who made this path, this deep,
fundamental change in my life possible.
And I'm referring to
the President of the Mexican Republic,
Mr. Luis Echeverría Álvarez.
They'd rather applaud a murderer
than a woman.
Well, it could be worse.
We could be occupying
the cell he left empty.
[knocks on door]
- Alejandro.
- Hi.
We agreed you wouldn't come over
without telling us.
Sorry. Sorry. I know I have to call first.
- Uh, just two minutes here, please.
- [Mar] Dad!
Hello. Hello. Hi. Mar, how are you?
- [chuckling] Dad.
- Hi. Hello!
This is for you.
- [María] Thank you.
- I'll open it.
[paper ripping]
[María gasps]
THE ADVENTURES OF
DETECTIVE MURRIETA
[Alejandro chuckles]
Look at the first page.
[María] "To Detective María.
Never stop searching for the truth.
Sincerely, Daniel Jacobos."
[gasps]
[Alex] Is it just books?
No, honey. They're much more than that.
- May I read one?
- Of course, Mar. You can read them all.
Okay. Would you two give me a moment
alone with your dad? Say bye to him.
- I love you. Bye.
- [Alex] Bye, Dad.
[Alex chuckles]
[sighs]
They canceled
the program with policewomen.
After all that you did?
Precisely because of all we did.
[sighs] I really don't
don't know what to do.
What I do know is that I want to be alone.
Thank you for this.
It's the most beautiful sentiment.
But I don't need any gifts from you,
Alejandro, and I
don't need you to win me back.
What I need is time for
time for me to figure out what comes next.
But alone.
I understand.
And
I respect that.
Take all the time you want.
I I won't bother you.
At all.
And now I'm leaving.
Thanks, Bina.
Your meal.
Thanks.
Prepared by Gabriel.
Well, then, I bet it's delicious.
Yep.
[man] Ángeles, dear, is your friend here?
Don Lule, this is Gabriel,
who I mentioned.
- I came to eat with him a few days ago.
- I remember. Hi, Gabriel.
- Hello. How are you?
- Nice to meet you.
Why not grab an apron from the back
and let's get going.
- What?
- You didn't tell him?
It was a surprise, and I didn't know
when I had to tell him.
What What surprise?
I spoke with Don Lule
about giving you a job in the kitchen.
There's the surprise.
Surprise!
[laughs] Are you serious?
Well, I'll let you two figure it all out.
- See you in the kitchen?
- Yes, sir.
You did this for me?
That's what girlfriends do
for their boyfriends. They help them.
Maybe we could also kiss each other.
[Don Lule] Gabriel, are you ready?
Don Lule is waiting.
- [Don Lule] Ah. This is your station.
- [Gabriel] Yes, chef.
[Don Lule] Let's start over here.
Aunt Val, did you all get to bust
any criminals?
Matter of fact, we only busted one.
- And was he very bad?
- Very.
But there were four of you
and just one of him. Isn't that correct?
Exactly right.
So, if the guy was very bad
and you all busted him,
why won't they let you be cops anymore?
Because the government doesn't need us.
But that isn't fair.
[Valentina] No, it's not.
So why not organize one of your marches?
Because there's
so much more to it than that.
The government only cares
about having a good image.
It never mattered to them
what's fair or unfair.
All they ever wanted was
for people to take pictures of them
and say that they're absolutely amazing.
[gasps]
[Mar] Aunt Val?
[sighs]
[applause]
Thank you very much, Commissioner
Castellanos, for your kind words.
It is true that The Undresser is dead
and finally our country
can sleep in peace.
But what about tomorrow?
Are we prepared, as a government,
to make our sisters, daughters
and mothers go to the streets
and face a horrible monster
like The Undresser?
In moments like this one,
we must think about what's best
for our citizens, and act accordingly.
Therefore I want to announce that
[doors open]
[camera shutters click]
Don't forget you signed a document.
I'll keep that in mind.
Comrades
it's a profound honor to present you
Valentina Camacho.
[audience applauding]
[applause ends]
Thank you very much, Mrs. Echeverría.
I'd like to begin acknowledging everyone
who helped out with my rescue.
I owe you my life.
And And now I'd like to speak precisely
to all to all the people
who think that
because I was in such danger,
the women police program should disappear.
My What happened to me
could have happened to anyone here.
But we must not use that to chase women
away from being police officers.
We've sacrificed so much
to be able to be here today before you all
and have this opportunity.
There are so many of us who no longer have
the support of our families.
If we ever even had it. [sniffles]
We have sacrificed precious moments
with our loved ones,
with with our partners, with children.
And you know what?
All of it was worth it,
because that's what it cost
to have the honor to put on a badge
and serve our country.
When When we graduated,
you said that we were
the best that there are in this city.
And you weren't wrong.
I could never say that about myself,
but I absolutely can say that
about these 15 women here.
So, on behalf of all 16 of us,
I want to thank you
for never turning your back on us,
and I assure you that history will never
forget how much you fought for us.
We will never let you down.
Thank you very much.
I won't let you down either.
Officer Camacho.
Thank you, ma'am.
[audience cheering]
I hadn't checked out the other door,
which was unlocked,
and the suspect slid, opened up the door
and ran out, just like that.
- [all laughing]
- Well, uh
I have I have to go, but
before saying goodbye, I'd like to ask
all of you for a moment of silence.
- María, can you stand up?
- Holy schnikes.
[all laughing]
[Gabina] Stop it.
[Octavio] María de la Torre,
for having learned to show leadership,
honor and valor in your duty,
- I present you with this.
- [gasps]
Congratulations,
Lieutenant María de la Torre.
[Ángeles, Valentina] Bravo!
Thank you so much.
- Thank you, Captain.
- Congratulations.
- Excuse me, and good night.
- [Valentina] Good night.
- [Octavio] Good night.
- [María] Good night.
You two were acting very weird again,
but now I think I know how come.
I think that we all know why, hmm?
I spoke with him. He's a great man.
But I'm not ready to be with anyone.
Well, who needs to be dating
when you have all of us?
[all chuckle]
Thanks to you.
[Valentina] For what?
What do you mean, what?
Everything you did for us.
And how you did it, Val.
I've never heard you talk that way,
with so much
I don't know, with such purpose.
- I get goose bumps when I think about it.
- Me as well.
I have a boyfriend.
- Excuse me?
- Huh?
Sorry. I didn't wanna
derail the conversation.
I was looking for a moment to tell you,
but I couldn't find one.
[laughs] Look at that.
She's shy, and then
she gets herself a boyfriend.
I got a boyfriend.
And friends.
I got friends.
Good morning.
[people chattering]
It's nice to look at the sky, isn't it?
I had grown accustomed to imagining it
on the ceiling in my cell.
One gets acclimated to nearly anything.
It's incredible.
Now I've got to accustom myself
to being a family man.
My wife snores as if she were an animal
with a fever. [laughs]
What are you doing here?
I came to congratulate you this way
in person.
You caught him.
Well, you killed him.
Same thing.
The police never, not a single time,
mentioned any of you.
We know what we accomplished.
And that'll suffice.
The police in this country
are never going to let you all
get to your true potential, María.
I should know.
They've taken 30 years of my life.
It would have been more
if it weren't for you.
No, no. No, I No, no.
- Yes.
- No, no, I did nothing.
Now the question to pose is
what's next for you
and me?
You see
all of those years I was there
locked away in Lecumberri,
oh, man, I read stories.
Many, many, many stories.
There is one story in particular
that keeps showing up
as a constant visitor now that I am free.
And it's a story that says
that a boy or a youngster
is filled with rage
because a terrible injustice befell him.
And so he visits his grandfather for
basically to ask what to do,
how he should react to that.
And so Grandfather tells him,
"You see, my boy,
there are two wolves living in all of us.
One wolf represents all of the malice,
the horror, the jealousy, wrath and hate.
And the other wolf represents
peace, love, generosity.
And they're constantly fighting
a truly ferocious war against each other."
Then the grandson asks the grandfather,
"Who will win?"
Do you know what he answered?
No.
"The one that you feed."
You should know
that I feel the same as that boy.
On one hand, it gives me enormous
satisfaction to have helped you out.
But at the same time I feel a hatred,
a darkness, an obscurity that
that calls to me,
that drags me around.
Which one should I be feeding, María?
[thunderclap]
It's the one that gave you freedom,
that caught a murderer
and saved my sister.
[thunder rumbling]
Would that be my best version?
Only time will tell.
[thunder continues]
