Welcome Back, Audition

at measure twenty-three.

who bombed our auditions
to prepare a different piece
to perform for him.
So I've been practicing.
Also, since I'm the only tuba,
the entire bass section
is just me and Natsuki!
That sounds super fun!

we're kinda having a blast.
I have to make sure
I'm supporting
the entire band, you know?
-[blowing raspberries]
-[chuckles]
[HAZUKI]

really want Kaori to be able
to play the trumpet solo.

that I threatened you

if you tell them I bullied you.

You don't have to do
any of this.
All that Kaori has to do,
is perform better than me
in the audition today.
[YUUKO]
Yeah, I understand that.
Last year,
Kaori was the best
trumpet player in our band.
But parts were given
by seniority,
so all of the solos went
to an upperclassman,
even though Kaori was better
and more experienced.
And even after
that whole let-down,
Kaori still tried to resign
from the competition
thinking she could stop
the first-years from quitting
if they could play
instead of her.
But they all dropped
out of band anyway.
So our performance
at the competition
ended up being
a total disaster.
None of that matters here,
though.
None of that drama
from last year affects me.
You're right, it doesn't.
Not even a little bit.
But, look, you have next year
to play still.
And the year after that.
Mister Taki will make the band
even better next year.
But this is
Kaori's last chance.
[sobs]
This is her last year to play.

[REINA]
You've gotta stop that.

[Kumiko whimpers]

[HAZUKI] [gasps]

The competition will be
at an even larger hall.
So if this place
is overwhelming,
just wait for the performance.

[KAORI]

[Kaori grunts]

As Miss Nakaseko has declined.
You'll represent us
in the competition.
