Project Runway: All Stars (2012) s01e12 Episode Script

Finale, Part 2

Previously, on Project Runway: All Stars You've all made it to the final challenge.
I feel like this is my time.
We want to see five different looks.
You have four days.
Uh-oh.
Welcome to my world.
The next four days are going to be very intense for you.
Are these pants? He's such a.
I need therapy.
Hello? Designers? We decided we wanted just one more look.
All of our old fabric.
And there's more.
We've invited some familiar faces to join us back in the work room.
Look what the cat dragged in.
I'm going to pick Mila.
Princess Antoinetta.
I'm going to choose that Silver Fox Johnston.
Ooh! So--so you don't like it? He said it looks like dead white lady.
It looks like crap.
How are you feeling about tomorrow? Oh, God, I want to win.
This is all I've ever wanted.
And it's so close.
I know I have what it takes.
13 of the best designers from Project Runway are back.
And this time competition is tougher than ever.
Each week, their skills are tested to the limit as they compete for the biggest prize in Runway history.
Who will be cut, and who will have it all sewn up? This is Project Runway: All Stars.
The winner of Project Runway: All Stars will sell their merchandise within an exclusive boutique at select Neiman-Marcus stores and on Neimanmarcus.
com.
The winner will also get a spread in Marie Claire magazine and a position as guest editor for one year, $100,000 in technology and office space from HP and Intel, a sewing and embroidery studio provided by Brother International, and a cash prize of $100,000, courtesy of L'Oreal Paris.
It's the morning of finale, and today is judgment day.
Just think, minutes away.
Oh, my goodness.
I'm, like, nervous.
I think I'm gonna throw up.
I am a rock star.
This is my chance to just, like, deliver my message about who Austin Scarlett is and just rock it like an all-star.
I just get so excited to see all the models.
I'm really confident with the way that everything looks.
I feel really good about the collection, and there's nothing more that I can do to it.
I'm done.
I absolutely adore Michael, and he deserves to be here, and I know he wants it more than anybody, but I have wanted it so much.
I deserve this.
I feel like I deserve this.
I've worked so hard.
Does Liza Minnelli know you went through her wardrobe, girl? Let's go do this.
Well, may the best designer win.
This is the big moment.
It's now or never.
Hi, there.
I am super, super excited about this.
Wow.
But, you know, there's still work to be done.
I'm, like, getting a fashion orgasm right now.
So we arrive at Gotham Hall for the finale, which is a glorious event space in the heart of Manhattan.
This is a special location for the All-Stars and definitely fitting for the All Stars finale.
Gorgeous.
Look.
Oh.
Heaven.
Wow.
This is beautiful.
It's so beautiful that you feel so blessed to be in there.
I have always imagined how wonderful and beautiful it would be to actually have a fashion show there, and here it is, coming true.
And not just any fashion show.
The Project Runway: All star Finale.
We've made it, boys.
Hug.
If you visualize something and you're honest with yourself, it's that much more real.
Let's go, like, get to work.
So all I'm doing is focusing on visualizing myself on the runway and winning.
We head backstage.
Each of us has our own dressing area with all of our Neiman Marcus accessories, our irons, our steamers.
Last night, I got the work in that I wanted to get in, so I'm feeling good.
It's just a matter of focusing and keeping on track.
As soon as I throw my bag down, I immediately go for this red carpet dress, which still has a lot of work to be done.
I feel like Austin might have bit off a little bit more than he can chew, so now he's choking.
me now.
I'm about to freak right now.
So I'm frantic backstage, running, trying to get everything ready.
But that's just the type of designer and person I am.
Hi.
How are you? Good to see you.
So the models come in now, I'm excited, I want to do last-minute fittings, make sure everything's good, 'cause, the night before, I made sure everything was fine.
It's really tight.
Really tight.
And looser on this side.
The sleeve is too tight.
The other sleeve is a little bit loose.
I'm like, oh, my God.
The zipper is terrible.
Michael's kind of in a predicament.
Yesterday he felt like he was in such a good place, he was completely finished.
But then today things aren't fitting as well as he'd like them to.
Good.
All right.
So, look number one, I have these--they're supposed to be opaque tights, but they're not at all.
I haven't decided if I want to send her down in, like, boy shorts, 'cause it's kind of, like, see-through Or if I want to take that risk, you know.
Like, it's--I don't know.
For me, it's kind of risky.
I think we need to go ahead to makeup, so why don't we go to the land of L'Oreal? So here are my beauties.
We know what to do.
Rouge cheeks.
Should have, like, a doll face.
Mwah.
Good to see you.
I want, like, a natural cheek and ruby, ruby lip.
Yeah.
Hey, Scott.
I thought to do, like, a cat eye, some falsie lashes, and then just a little color on the cheek.
Sort of all sweeping over the face.
Really, like, sculpted, large, fat curls.
'70s kind of hair.
Like, if the part's here, then brushed out, then sprayed.
They're supposed to be, like, unkempt.
And then a little bit Shock therapy.
All right, have fun, girls.
Austin.
Joanna.
How--how's it going? I'm creating right now.
Why are you doing it now? Because I didn't have time to finish everything last night.
Now she's done.
I just need to, like, sash her.
Okay, 'cause I don't want this showing.
What are these, staples? These are pins.
Okay-- But it's gonna have a sash around it.
Okay.
All right.
Phew.
I know, Joanna.
It's crazy.
I guess really the only thing I hope they don't notice are any pins on the red carpet dress.
This thing is huge on you.
It's six inches too big.
This much bigger.
I'm like, what the hell? I'm gonna have to redo the snap.
'Cause it's, like, too huge.
It needs to be, like, way smaller.
I wasn't prepared for this.
Yeah, what's the matter? I had to cut the lining out and readjust it six inches.
We never really got a full fitting with Noelle.
Right.
So it was difficult.
You know what, that's one of those things you're just gonna have to let go and let God.
Yeah, but that was my little setback when I thought I was, like, so prepared.
No matter how confident you are, you're always gonna have something go wrong before a runway show.
Be prepared.
Is this all done? Um, yeah.
Everything is pretty much done.
I'm just, you know, pressing everything, making it runway ready.
Okay, good.
What are you doing in here? I'm just deciding to add some This is good.
Do you need--do you need lint rollering? I probably do.
Oh, you do.
You know what, can I use this on your back? Yes, you can.
I feel like I should.
I don't want you going out there with bits of fluff and cotton on your back.
Being lint-rolled down by Joanna Coles was never in my game plan.
It's a little uncomfortable.
It's like your aunt rolling you down.
Where's the other model? Excuse me.
Hey, can I just see everybody together really quick? Those last few minutes, it's not adrenaline.
It's fear.
You're working in fear.
It's time to start lining up.
It's time for Show time.
Coming up on Project Runway: All Stars Only three designers remain.
And it all comes down to tonight.
It's time to start lining up.
It's time for Show time.
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
And welcome to a very exciting night.
Three months ago, 13 All-Star designers returned to Project Runway to showcase their talents.
Only three designers remain.
And it all comes down to tonight.
Let's meet the judges.
First, the designer and cofounder of Marchesa, the beautiful Georgina Chapman.
Next one of the most famous names in fashion Isaac Mizrahi.
And we have the first of two guest judges.
His fashion empire is one of the most internationally recognized brands around the world.
He is a true American success story.
Fashion icon Tommy Hilfiger.
And helping us make this major decision tonight is our final judge.
He is the SVP and Fashion Director of Neiman Marcus.
Ken Downing.
Our designers were given just four days to put their collections together.
So please give them a lot of support and enjoy the show.
Hello, everyone.
Thank you for coming to view my collection.
It's called Austin Scarlett, and it's a story of a vampire from the 18th century who has lived many hundreds of years and now resides in Williamsburg and occasionally borrows clothes from her Hasidic dandy friends.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed creating it.
Thank you.
It's really--it's great.
It's really great.
It's very emotional.
It's completely This is your moment, sweetie.
It really is.
It looks amazing.
I feel like I'm watching some gorgeous Paris haute couture show.
To me, it looks I love it.
I really, I mean, this is happy now.
Like, I think it looks great.
I think it's like an other, out-of-body experience.
This is my life.
This is who I am as an artist.
This is everything I believe in.
I feel like an All-Star winner right now.
Hi, everybody.
I'm Mondo.
And my collection is called Therapy.
It was really hard for me to find inspiration, and really struggling through these last few challenges.
I needed some therapy, so I put all my passion into my work.
I hope you enjoy it.
Good night.
That's such a strong opening look.
I can just see my vision unfolding in front of my eyes and tell my story.
This is amazing.
This is such a flattering look for the model too, which is so important, something some designers overlook.
Well--oh, look.
Now there's Tommy Hilfiger, guest judge, and Ken Downing from Neiman Marcus, Fashion Director.
They're looking inscrutable.
I can't tell what they're thinking.
I really tried to play with new silhouettes, things that I don't really necessarily do, you know.
Mm-hmm.
Therapy.
Yes.
Therapy.
You're cured.
I'm cured.
Very high level of applause.
Good.
That's good.
Okay, listen, well done.
Thank you.
Good job, girls.
Great job, girls.
Good job.
Wow.
Hi, everybody.
My name is Michael.
My collection is inspired by the Serengeti, and I want to take you on a wonderful adventure.
Enjoy the show.
Thank you.
Well, that feels very luxurious and very comfortable.
Yeah.
Doesn't it? Yeah.
Very flattering.
That's a really nice little vest.
Isn't that a great little vest? I feel like those layering pieces are terribly useful, and they're bread and butter for designers.
They really are.
My heart's pounding because my collection is me stepping away from my comfort zone.
I'm an evening wear designer at heart.
Love these prints.
They're fun, right? Mm-hmm.
She also looks great.
I love the flats with this.
Those little shorts--I love your shorts.
Yeah, right? This is my favorite piece, and it's separates, and it looks like it's one piece.
And I just love it.
Now those in the know, this is the moment when they'll know it's you.
Yup.
The signature Michael dress.
Signature Michael dress.
It wouldn't be a Michael Costello collection without a drapey, beautiful, elegant, flowy dress.
Yes, I'm trying to show you what I can do, but still have to keep me in it.
Lots of applause.
Good for you.
Oh, that's good.
Savor these moments.
Well done.
Well done.
Thank you.
Hi, guys.
Hi.
Congratulations.
Amazing clothes.
Hi.
It's nice to see them again and see how they've evolved, what they've been doing.
I was pretty surprised what they can get out of four days.
So, if you give them four months like an average designer gets, I think--I think you have some great talent there.
My highlight from the show was that amazing pantsuit that, like, walked down and walked back.
Like, the model was amazing, the pantsuit was amazing, and they nailed it, and I loved it.
I'm really worried to see who the winner is, 'cause I have one I'm rooting for.
I loved seeing the All-Stars.
I think it's so exciting to see the best of the best sort of outperform each other.
It's still all rushing through my head.
I don't think I've fully processed what has just happened.
Just to be here and have the chance to show again on Project Runway is--it really is a dream come true, as much as I bitch and moan about it.
I promised myself I wouldn't cry, but I just feel so good about everything.
I just really do.
I'm really happy at this time.
Really.
Austin, Michael, Mondo, you guys did an amazing job, and you just made our night much more difficult.
Now, as you know, we're gonna critique all three of you.
So, Michael and Mondo, you can leave the runway and go to the designers' lounge.
Okay.
Thank you.
And, Austin, you can bring out your models.
Girls.
Austin, congratulations.
I don't know how you put all these pieces together in such a short amount of time.
I think that's masterful.
I think you've got some really special pieces here.
I think you've got some really good ideas.
I think you did a really good job, Austin.
Congratulations, man.
I would not view that as a collection.
I would view it as the best of someone's work over a number of years or something.
I loved the Rock 'n' Roll statement, and I think, if you do take the jumpsuit, the leatherette skirt, the lacquered lace, and even the first jacket, then you have sort of, like, a rock star feeling.
But then you lose me when you show me a wedding gown that belongs in a different collection.
But don't you love the wedding dress? I can see a million women actually wanting to get married in that dress.
That, to me, was a really phenomenal piece.
I question that ball gown, just how flattering it is.
I think you need to be careful where you're adding volume and then where you're cinching, and the length isn't quite perfect.
I adore the lacquered lace dress.
Absolutely the lacquered lace.
Which is the piece made with leftover fabric? It was the jumpsuit.
That was the jumpsuit.
It's leatherette from the streetwear challenge.
The pink's from the Miss Piggy challenge, and the black is from the Broadway challenge.
What was so great about your collection was that it was such a woman coming out.
I love that too, and it's so glamorous.
And you do have a youth to your glamour, which is so important.
We all thank you.
We'll bring out our next designer.
Thank you all.
Thank you.
Thanks.
I think the judges love the collection.
They love that I brought a definite youthfulness to a couture collection.
And that really is a wonderful critique that is important to me.
I'm done.
I think you're up next, darling.
All right.
Can't even think at this point.
Honestly, my--every emotion, every thought is just racing through my mind, like a crazy pinwheel kaleidoscope.
Hi, Mondo.
Hi.
Congratulations, Mondo.
I mean, as always, you were so masterful with your use of print and your use of color and your graphics.
Of the three collections we saw, I think this is definitely the most cohesive in the wit of it, in the mixing of the fabrics together.
The first outfit was a wow.
The second she walked on the runway, I thought, "this designer really, really gets it.
" Dress number two: I just think you have too much detail on that particular dress.
I have to tell you, I am absolutely taken aback by the Rorschach print.
The fact that you created it, it looks so professional.
It looks like it came from a fabric house.
I love this pant.
I think that the pockets are a bit too large.
I think smaller would be more appealing.
The dress at the end I think is so beautiful.
That textile's beautiful.
I'm mad for the appliques.
I'm personally not crazy about the lame.
I feel like this dress doesn't fit into the rest of the collection.
Is that your leftover fabric, the last one? No.
No, no, no.
That wasn't.
This one is.
This is the net lacquer.
I got some from the light challenge, and I got some from the flags.
I love your attention to detail.
And you thought throughout each piece of it in the best way that you had in a short period of time.
Did a great job.
Thank you, Mondo, for sharing your collection.
All righty.
You can go back to the designers' lounge, and we will speak to you soon.
Thanks.
Bye, guys.
Bye.
And gals.
I think it's really cool that the judges all picked something different that they liked.
That means, as a collection, it makes sense.
Michael.
This is the big moment.
I'm excited to get it done.
It's been a long, long process.
Michael.
Congratulations.
Georgina, what did you think of the collection? It's exceptional.
It really is.
I think these clothes, you've made them so well.
I think you could put these in the stores tomorrow and sell them.
There's a cohesive attitude to the collection.
It's not all the same print, and I like how they kind of play off one another.
I understand why you're using all the prints because of the African theme, but you have to be very careful when you're buying a print, because it looks a little too commercial.
For this particular challenge, you know, it's supposed to be, like, this fabulous, like, fantasy thing.
And you went to this place with the Serengeti.
You know, and we get that with the prints, and, for me, some of it looks like you mixed it in not the most interesting way.
Do you know what I mean? I love the second dress because I like that whole building of the bra cup.
It's amazing.
I call that piecing.
I like how there's a little bit of a warrior princess in the way that dress is cut.
I think this dress is also great if you take the vest off.
This is the sixth look.
I don't know if you recognize the fabrics.
The dress is from the Greek flag challenge that we had.
The patent leather belt is from the Miss Piggy challenge.
The elastic is from the face-off challenge.
And then the light challenge that we had with Pharrell as the judge is what the vest is made from.
The thing that you do again and again which is so wonderful is that you do this kind of thing that exalts, like, flesh.
I always feel the flesh in the clothes, which is, to me, the greatest thing in the world.
But you have to be careful because that can go very inexpensive-feeling.
I think that there's a big clientele for that kind of sex appeal, but I feel also a sophistication in there.
Also, you know where you've been so great here, Michael, is this white grecian dress, it's gorgeous, it's sensual, and yet it's not overly sexy.
You really got the balance there, and I really congratulate you for that.
It was just divine.
Well, thank you, Michael.
You did a wonderful job.
Thank you.
Thank you, guys.
You can go back to the designers' lounge, and we'll see you soon.
Thank you.
I felt like it was a really positive critique.
This is the main guy for Neiman Marcus and this is Tommy Hilfiger talking about how my pieces can sell.
This is great.
Congratulations, gentlemen.
May the force be with you.
And also with you.
Well, guys, what an impressive evening.
I mean, I was really blown away by these collections.
To do this in four days, I mean, it's amazing.
Shall we start with Austin? He's one of the more talented ones in that he can think big, long, epic thoughts.
I agree with you.
I think Austin, out of all of them, is probably the most artistic.
He is an ideas machine.
And that's what makes him so wonderful, and you get carried away in his dream.
There was a lot of messages in that collection.
I wish he could have zeroed in on only a couple of ideas.
If you were to decipher what he showed, you could probably pick out a couple of Rock 'n' Roll pieces, more current, and then a couple of pieces that may have looked more period.
I thought the last dress was phenomenal.
I just don't think it fit into the collection.
The lacquered lace dress was phenomenal.
That was cool.
One of the best pieces that came down the runway.
He has a really good eye.
I think that final dress was beautiful, and I'm sure you could sell a lot of those in bridal.
Oh, absolutely.
You know, I think that something he does bring is a femininity.
And I think that is something that women who are going to buy his kind of clothes are looking for.
Could Austin pull off an exclusive boutique at Neiman Marcus? Yes.
Yes.
I think that, if Austin got his hands on a really good stylist, there's no telling how far he could go.
The main thing was they thought it was, like, too full of ideas.
I just wanted to make it as powerful as possible.
Of course, it's insanely nerve-racking, but there's a sort of eerie sense of calm I feel that has come over the three of us.
You know, the thing about it Austin is that you've done the work, you shouldn't regret anything.
I don't.
I respect the judges' opinion, but I have to do what I need to do as an artist.
And I know that there's women out there who would love to wear all of those things, so I'm happy.
So let's move on to Mondo.
I was amazed at the workmanship with all the detail.
I loved the fact that he carried the dots all the way through.
He is a master at mixing fabrics and mixing ideas, Mondo.
He can take a bunch of fabrics and create his own textile out of it, which is what I love about him.
Well, it's '60s meets '80s, I think.
It's very modern.
I think it's younger, and I think that even with the lame dress at the end, which was a totally different palette, I thought it was very consistent.
What he does with fabrics really is smart and shows wit In the craft of making clothes.
Sometimes restraint, I think, is probably the best quality for a great fashion designer.
And, when he's restrained, I actually think there's some really strong pieces.
But when it gets too applied, it starts to lose its way.
The buttons that sometimes feel a little too big.
The pockets, which I thought were cartoonish on the pant.
I felt like I saw more of Mondo the last 12 weeks than I did tonight.
I felt like it fell short of what he's actually capable of.
I think Mondo has had such a strong point of view throughout this competition, and I think tonight he did an incredible job.
I think we expect a lot from Mondo, and I think he set his own bar very, very high.
I saw him as a true artist with a lot of passion, and I think, again, with the right focus, muse/stylist/direction, he would be great.
Can you tell me what--how your critique went? It went really well.
I'm feeling good.
I don't feel like I have to talk about it anymore.
This is my final collection, and I have to own not only who I am, but what I provide, which is my art.
I feel good.
I mean, I'm happy with what I showed.
At the end of the day, that's the most important thing.
So let's talk about Michael.
I think that it was more commercial, but it was very cohesive.
You looked at the whole collection, and you got it.
The fact that Michael's collection was a little bit more relaxed of shape and it was all jersey, when the other designers, we were looking at leatherette and lacquered laces and tweeds, it certainly stood out.
Those clothes did not come together in a sophisticated way enough for me.
I mean, there was one print that was okay in five prints.
Do you know what I mean? But I think, you know, Michael is a masterful draper.
We have seen this throughout all the weeks.
He really does make clothes well.
That's why they look like they could have--many of them could have gone to the store tomorrow.
Yes.
I could see those clothes going into the store and out the door.
I don't think I'm nervous.
I think it's more like Anxious? Yeah, anxious.
My heart's pounding because I have this feeling that it is me because I feel like I've shown them looks that can be sellable, looks that are wearable, and that's part of what fashion is.
I want to know.
I want--I want to get it done.
I want to know where I stand.
You kind of have to ask yourself, do you go for someone who's got too many ideas coming together all over the place or someone who is at a loss for ideas, and from their loss of ideas, something emerged, and someone who had such a straight idea of where they were headed, it almost lost its excitement along the way? They're all so different, but whose dream do we buy? And are we basing this just on tonight or as an overall aspect of a designer? Because that's where this decision is so hard.
They're all capable.
I'm gonna start the bidding.
I narrow it down to the thing that I relate to the most, and I agree with all of you.
Like, there wasn't one perfect collection.
That is why I think the consistency and the cohesiveness of the collection has to be paramount.
And I think Michael did that.
Michael tonight, I think he had too much of a commercial hat on.
I didn't see ideas.
I didn't see a fantasy and a dream.
But if you go into a store and you see a section of a store and you see clothes in the section and they look like they all belong there, you get it.
Otherwise, it looks very disparate.
Who can take all their ideas and translate them into something that would be successful at retail? But that's exactly the point.
Ideas.
Who has the best ideas? Yes, more than anything in the world, I want that prize.
I need that prize.
Yeah.
But I have, like, a very happy glow just being satisfied in my heart with what I did.
We're just all so relieved to be finished.
There's nothing I can do but just sit and await the verdict.
At this point, I am so done with the bad Just relieved.
That I'm just going to be good right now.
So we've all made our decision? Yes.
Then let's bring out the designers.
Okay, guys, let's go do this.
Austin, Michael, and Mondo Three months ago, you joined us as All-Stars.
You created outfits made out of lights, inspired by flags, and out of materials from the You designed for Miranda Kerr, Miss Piggy, the opera, and Broadway.
And you even persuaded people to trade with you the clothes off their backs.
But now it's down to business.
One of you will win the biggest prize in Project Runway history.
Austin, Michael, and Mondo, one of you will win the biggest prize in Project Runway history.
The winner will sell their merchandise within an exclusive boutique at select Neiman Marcus stores and neimanmarcus.
Com, a spread in Marie Claire magazine and a position as guest editor for a year, $100,000 in technology and office space from HP and Intel, a sewing and embroidery studio provided by Brother International, and a cash prize of $100,000, courtesy of L'Oreal Paris.
That sounds like a life-changing package to me.
You're all so talented.
But there can only be one winner.
There are no losers on All Stars.
So both runners-up will receive an incredible getaway, courtesy of Openskies Airlines and the Dorchester Collection hotels, to Paris.
Oh, my gosh.
Each designer and a guest will get the royal treatment flying in the exclusive premium transatlantic airlines Openskies for a weekend stay at one of Paris's five-star hotels--one at Le Meurice and one at Plaza Athenee.
Michael, you have achieved so much in the short space of time this season.
We're thrilled with the work that you've done, and we all know that you have a fantastic future ahead of you.
Michael I'm sorry, but you are out.
Here are your tickets to Paris.
Well done.
I do feel really hurt at this point.
This is all I've ever wanted.
But this experience has definitely changed my life.
It opens up my eyes to be more creative, think outside of the box.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
I'm looking in my hand, and I'm walking away with two tickets to Paris.
I'm going to Paris.
And now the moment we've all been waiting for.
Austin, you've come such a long way since appearing on the first-ever Project Runway.
We are so proud of your success, and we know you will go on to even greater things.
Mondo, you have an incredible talent complete with all the high and lows that come with being a creative person.
We love the way you channel that energy and use it to create work.
Mondo, Austin, one of you is the winner of Project Runway: All Stars.
The winner of Project Runway: All Stars is Mondo! Congratulations, Mondo.
I'm sorry to say, Austin, but you're out.
You did an amazing job.
Congratulations.
Here are your tickets to Paris.
Thank you.
This is a wonderful consolation.
Thank you, Austin.
You can leave the runway.
Project Runway: All Stars has been an incredible gift.
Of course, I believe that I should have won.
I believe that I've shown that I have everything that it takes to be the star of stars.
Farewell.
Ohh, I can't believe it.
Whoa.
Being on Project Runway: All Stars has been the hardest thing I've done.
I thought Project Runway season eight was hard, but this was leaps and bounds, like, beyond difficult.
You're a brilliant designer, and you create beautiful clothes, and I'm so excited we're now gonna have a chance to buy them.
Thank you.
I'm very excited for you.
