Realizing he's strong enough
to challenge great beasts,
Helck joins Alicia and
her mercenaries.
Meanwhile, Cless is severely
injured during a campaign
to eliminate the Demon Lord.
The populace believes that
peace has finally returned,
but word of yet another attack
reaches the royal capital.
Wait, hold on,
don't do anything crazy.
I'm gonna kill him,
that son of a bitch.
[opening theme]
[THE POWER OF HEROES]
[dramatic fanfare]
[wind blowing]
[Helck] That must be
the Demon Lord's castle.
[ominous music]
[footsteps]
Is the place empty?
[tense music]
[Helck gasps]
Huh?
They're just mannequins
made to look like
soldiers from the kingdom.
What's that for?
Someone's here,
someone very strong.
Must be the Demon Lord.
Whoever it is,
no doubt they know I'm here.
[Azudra] Hmm
[Azudra gasping]
[Helck] He has to be the one.
Whoa there, I highly suggest
you keep your distance.
No, no, wait.
I tried to warn him.
I may not be in top shape,
but the traps I set are
still pretty effective.
[Helck grunts]
[dramatic music]
[Azudra screams]
Surrender now, you have
no hope of defeating me.
[loud crashing]
Why are you sending
monsters to our realm?
What did we ever do to you?
What are you trying
to accomplish?
[Azudra] That's a
strange question.
We are not responsible
for spawning the monsters.
They come from the land.
What?
[Azudra] Um, Demon Lord Thor
should have already told you
all this, Hero of the humans.
Huh?
Hold on, so you're
not the Demon Lord?
And likewise,
you're not the Hero
who defeated the
Demon Lord Thor.
I'm Helck, the mercenary.
The one who fought
the Demon Lord
was my younger
brother, Cless,
Cless the Hero!

I'm an elite lord
of the empire, Azudra.
There's an empire, really?
That's right,
the castle we're in now,
it's just one fraction
of a much larger empire.
I'm one of the four elite
lords who help rule it.

authority than Thor.

Our people have no intention
of waging war with the humans.
What does that mean?
Our kingdom is
under constant attack
by overwhelming
numbers right now.
[Azudra] Now, I can explain
why there's been an uptick
in monsters in your realm.
You see, it's mostly fallout
after you people attacked
this castle.
[Helck gasps]
This is an outpost
meant to curb their spread.
It used to have the power
to stop the monsters
from spawning.
That can't be!
You're lying to me!
[Azudra] I'm not surprised
you find it hard to believe.
Humans have regarded us as a
threat for hundreds of years.
You've constantly been fed
the idea that we're evil.
[Helck] If that's true,
then what exactly
are you doing here?
Well, come and let me show you.
[soft music]
What's all this?
It's a burial site
for my comrades who fell
after your kingdom attacked.
They're not the
best-looking graves,
but I felt they
deserved something.
You did all
this by yourself?
[Azudra] With a little
help from some tree roots.
Don't you despise us though,
for taking the lives
of your comrades?
Of course I am upset.
What happened is
heartbreaking and infuriating.
However, everyone here
was aware of the risk
when they took the post.
[Helck] I don't understand.
The people of your
empire must have
more than enough power
to crush us.
Why haven't you done it?
Well, I could give you
a few reasons,
but the most important one
is because one day, we hope
to reforge the friendship
that we once had with humankind.
[Helck gasps]
[Helck] It came as a shock.
I felt like I'd been
struck by lightning.
We talked for
a while after that.
He told me about the
distant past when demonkin,
or rather the people
of the empire,
lived side by side
in harmony with us,
but as the human realm
went through the fall
and rebirth of various reigns,
the existence of that
empire was slowly forgotten.
Over time, demonkin were blamed
for all of human problems,
which led to numerous attacks.
They tried to reestablish
peace several times,
but they all failed.
[Helck] Do you think Thor
tried to offer my brother
an end to the fighting?
I'm sure of it.
He was the biggest pacifist
among everyone
stationed out here.
They even called him
"Thor the Peacemaker."
Okay.
Cless is an incredibly
powerful warrior,
but he doesn't actually
like to fight.
I have no idea why
he would keep going
after hearing that
peace was an option.
It's not something
he would do.
[Azudra] Have you not
spoken to your brother?
The battle with the
Demon Lord left him a mess
and unconscious.
He still hasn't come to.
[Azudra] Ah, that's unfortunate.
[Helck] Azudra.
[Azudra] Hmm?
Is there a chance
that we could still bring
peace to our people?
A truce?
Of course.
All right,
then I'm gonna head back
and let my people know the
truth as soon as possible.

While I was down in the castle,
I made a little magic barrier.
It should limit the number
of monsters spawning for now,
but be careful out there.
And remember, once a new Demon
Lord takes over this castle
and it's restored,
things will start to improve.

we'll be holding a competition
to decide a new one.

Now, I understand why Azudra
placed such a surprising
amount of trust in Helck.
While walking away

I heard him shout to me
from within the castle.
I couldn't make it out exactly,
but I know for sure that
it was Azudra's voice.
I take it with me today.
He was encouraging me to keep
up the good fight for peace.
[Vermilio] No, he was
just being a clumsy jackass!
[Azudra screams]
[Helck] Even though
the monster problem
wasn't completely solved,
it felt better to know
that demons that we
had feared so much
we're not actually after us.
That said,
I hesitated whether or not
I should tell the citizens
of the kingdom this news.
How can I convince them?
A person with influence should
really be the one to do it.
In which case,
he's my only option.
[Helck gasps]
[ominous music]
My God, how did things get
so bad at the defensive line?
What happened to my friends?

For a split second,
I was overcome by something
I'd never felt before,
it was an awful chill,
foreboding.
[Helck] Open the gates!
[guard] A survivor!

When things started to go
south, they all chickened out
and shut the gates on our asses.

and couldn't really retreat.

and by some miracle,
we pulled through.
But well, the other soldiers
and mercenaries didn't
turn out so great.
Why the hell would you
close the gates on us?
You were obviously
at a disadvantage
and we nobles have a duty
to keep the capital safe.
Your incompetence is
what led to this disaster!
Remember your place, woman!
The nobles hold far more value
than mercenaries for hire.
Nobody gives a shit about you!
Alicia, remember, helping
the survivors comes first!

here comes trouble.

watching over the captain.
And of course, that

When Edil heard about
everything,
he got super pissed off.
He saw how badly it was
hurting the people's morale
so he went up the chain
to demand the commander
face some serious consequences.

Let's just forget all
these selfish assholes
and go back to the outskirts.
The kingdom will fall apart
if the capital gets overrun.
Well, we can't really fight
with all these injuries anyway.
[Borgen] Hey, Helck,
would you mind going
to check on those two?
- They're at the castle.

has been pretty hard on them,

Seeing how ugly and vile
everyone was acting,

The demonkin are
crafty and devious.
They obviously took
advantage of your kind nature,
attempting to turn
us against each other.
Look closely at these three.
[demon grunting]

[substance spurting]

What you're witnessing is
the true form of the demonkin.
[bodies crunching]

[citizens screaming]
Look, Helck, you
must never forget.
[demon growling]

They are purveyors of
death and destruction,
beings of pure evil who
serve only to spread chaos.
[demon roaring]
That is what the
demonkin truly are.
[Helck] Azudra, was everything
you said to me a lie?
[Helck gasps]
[energetic music]
I didn't know that there are
others as strong as Cless.
Those men were blessed
with the power of heroes
just as your little brother was.
- [citizen] Oh, my God.
- Thank God for them.
That was terrifying.
There are more heroes.
[Alicia] Helck!
Alicia, Edil.
We heard monsters
were on a rampage.
Although, it seems
we showed up too late.
No, actually.
How'd it go? I'm glad you
made it back in one piece.

Raphaed, about the demonkin.
[Raphaed] They are not
just our problem.
They're a menace
to the entire world.
Listen, Helck, do not
let them lead you astray.
Have faith in me.
[Helck] The following day,
the kingdom made
an announcement
that brought both despair
and a ray of hope.
[Raphaed] Though we
defeated the Demon Lord,
we have learned he was only a
small part of a greater evil
that commands the Demon Realm.
However, we have
a powerful secret weapon
known as the "awakening."
All human beings have
an innate power
that previously could
not be tapped into,
but we have successfully
developed a technique
that allows us to
finally reach that power.
[citizen 1] I've seen
these guys in action.
They were able to crush
a whole hoard of demons.
[citizen 2]
It's true, I saw it too!
[Raphaed]
I solemnly swear to you,
we shall use this newfound power
to wipe every last demon
off the face of this Earth
and then usher in an
era of true peace!
[citizens cheering]
[Helck] The kingdom made
it clear they would wage war
on the demonkin.
In the days that followed,
a countless number of demons
assaulted the capital.
But now, we had awakened
warriors on our side
who had no trouble
annihilating them.
They managed to hold
the defensive line
without a single casualty.
The number of victims
dropped both in the capital
and the kingdom at large,
and everyone could see
that the situation was
definitely improving.
I'm still not sure
if the demonkin
are really our enemies.
I just can't bring
myself to believe
that everything Azudra
told me was a lie.
[Alicia] Helck,
I made some coffee.
[Helck] I still hadn't
told my friends
about the conversation
I had with Azudra.
I was afraid to
because I had no idea
how they'd react to it.
[Lantos groans] You know,
I start getting antsy
when I'm not out
there kicking ass.
It feels weird,
just chilling like this.
After those new
soldiers showed up,
we suddenly got ourselves
some free time.
Everybody's feeling it.
The place is hopping.
Oh, yeah, that reminds me, I
heard that restaurant opened.
[Aksune] Everybody says
that place has the best pasta
you'll ever eat and it's a
pretty nice place at night.
Makes it perfect for
couples out on a date.
