Sheriff Country (2025) s01e19 Episode Script
Compromised
1
Previously on Sheriff Country
You need to step away and
just take some time off.
Just a little.
Our three million will be leaving
the sheriff's office tomorrow.
Rocky and I plan on stealing it back
from those DEA sons of bitches.
MICKEY: There is this
company called Emerald Eden.
They have been snatching up the best
cannabis-producing land in Edgewater,
and they're using hardball
tactics to get it.
It's either me or the case.
You can't have both.
I'm coming back, Mick.
People think I killed Brandon.
We can't control what people think.
- What is your problem
- I'm asking you, please
- with Alec?
- I'm-I'm crazy about you, Mick.
- I think I'm in love with you.
- Wesley Fox,
you have the right to remain silent.
Deputy Director Eva Santos.
The Department of Justice
has asked me to conduct
a comprehensive review to
determine if you are corrupt.
I suggest you get a good lawyer.
You're gonna need one.
RICK (muffled): You know, we were
waiting for you, but you never came.
Yeah, man, it didn't feel
the same without you there.
Yeah, everybody was asking about you.
They were like, "Why isn't she here?"
and I was like, "I don't know."
I mean, you never miss a meeting.
Hello?
Skye?
(normal volume):
Are you even listening to me?
Uh, sorry. What?
(sighs) I said you never miss a meeting.
Where were you last night?
(door opens)
(door closes)
- You called Hazel?
- She's your sponsor.
I thought I was doing the right thing.
Sit.
Don't be mad at Rick.
He's worried about you.
And so am I.
Why don't I get us some coffee?
What's going on?
What, I'm not allowed to miss a meeting?
Not when it's a milestone.
(scoffs)
Nine months is a big deal.
I can take you to a meeting now.
I've got work.
- Work will understand.
- Yeah, of course they will,
'cause everyone knows who I am.
They know who my mom is.
They know that she arrested
my grandpa last week.
You know, even at N.A.,
I'm not really anonymous.
There's a closed meeting
at Saint Joseph's later today.
(scoffs)
At the end, you'll get
your nine-month chip
- I don't want the chip.
- Skye, what is going on?
- You earned that chip.
- I don't want it, okay?
(sighs)
You know, in the past, um
when life got too much,
I'd turn to drugs.
Uh, fail a test? Use.
Um, fight with my mom? Use.
And now my grandfather
is going to prison.
And I watched my mom arrest
him like it was nothing.
So, I don't know,
I guess what happens next
just feels inevitable.
Skye, no. It is not.
Skye.
I'll go.
(door opens)
(door closes)
MICKEY: I don't know how else to say it.
I had no involvement with
my father's criminal activity.
So, walk me through it once more.
- (sighs): Look, Agent Santos
- Deputy Director.
Deputy Director.
I've done these
interrogations many times.
I know you're looking
for inconsistencies.
You're not gonna find any
because I have nothing to hide.
I'm telling you the truth.
Just so I understand, the truth is,
you invited your father into your home,
at which point he not only started
an illegal cannabis trafficking ring
but stole $3 million of the DEA's money.
$3 million which had
conveniently just left your office.
And then I arrested him,
as soon as I found out.
- What do you want from me?
- It's very simple, Sheriff.
I want to know if you're compromised.
Compromised?
Look, I invited my father to
move in for a family matter.
Your daughter.
Skye. Correct?
Skye was in recovery.
She'd been addicted to stimulants
and she recently had a relapse.
I thought it would be
a fresh start for her.
I-I thought it'd be a
fresh start for all of us.
So, your daughter was a
recovering drug addict,
and you invited a drug
dealer into your home?
With all due respect,
this is about the $3 million.
This line of questioning
is completely irrelevant.
It's extremely relevant.
And might I remind you, you could
have brought a lawyer, but you declined.
Because I have nothing to hide.
I asked my father to live with us
because he told me he was going legal,
and I believed him.
Perhaps because you
wanted to believe him,
which, with all due respect,
suggests you're not a very
good judge of character.
So, I will ask you once again.
Are you compromised?
Absolutely not.
This concludes my interview
with Sheriff Michaela Frances Fox,
9:53 a.m., Eva Santos, deputy director.
(beeps)
I'll be here a few days,
conducting further
interviews and audits.
All right, I'll make
sure you're comfortable.
RICK: You don't need
to be working today.
- My mom will understand.
- I'm fine, Rick.
(elevator bell dings)
Did your mom have a
meeting in the calendar?
Not that I know of.
MIRANDA: Rick, honey.
And Skye. How you doing, sweetie?
How are you holding up?
I know how close you
and your grandpa are.
I'm good, thanks. Honestly,
I could use the distraction of work.
I get that. And I could
definitely use you.
I'm holding a press event today.
Fraley Horizons is launching
an exciting new project.
I've been dying to tell you,
but you know lawyers and their NDAs.
Finally, I can finally loop you in,
if you're up for it.
- Of course.
- I knew I could count on you.
(phone ringing)
Oh, Skye, let Rick get that.
Do you mind, hon?
Just tell whoever it is that
I'm in an important meeting.
Hmm?
Hey.
How'd your interview with Santos go?
It wasn't an interview,
it was a personal attack.
I'm so sorry, Mickey. I had no idea.
Look, you don't have
anything to worry about
Stop. Stop, stop.
Does she know about us?
Of course not. Why would she?
I don't feel comfortable lying to her.
We're not lying. We're under no oblig
We're taking too big of a risk, Alec.
I don't think we should do this anymore.
EVA: Agent Kane?
I need your files on JoAnne Henshaw.
I'll pull those for you, ma'am.
I can't win. I arrested Wes,
yet somehow, I'm still too close to him.
Sorry you have to deal with all that.
I do have something
that'll cheer you up.
Ta-da.
(chuckles)
(gasps) Cassidy.
(laughs)
You're back.
Reporting for duty.
And ready to give any obnoxious
DEA agents a piece of my mind.
How was your time away?
After road-tripping with my mom,
which was cathartic
- Mm-hmm.
- but a lot,
I rented a cabin down the coast.
Just me, the ocean, the quiet.
- You needed that.
- Yeah, I did.
I expected a lot more resistance
when I asked her to come back early.
Wait, you called her?
Right after your dad got arrested.
He said you needed your people close.
He was worried about you.
Thank you.
BOONE: Come on.
Let me catch you up
on the land grab case.
MICKEY: So glad to have you back.
CASSIDY: Wow.
And I thought I was obsessed
with catching the Blood Moon Killer.
This land grab case has me beat.
I'm not obsessed.
So, where are we?
When I left, all we
knew was that someone
was trying to buy up land in Edgewater.
Not just any land, prime weed-growing
land, and if you refused to sell
that's the red spaces
they would intimidate
the hell out of you,
and sometimes worse.
- "They"?
- An LLC.
Emerald Eden. Set up in Nevada.
To remain anonymous. Smart.
These are the people
who we've confirmed
worked for Emerald Eden.
Liman Ford, a lawyer, he handled
all of the real estate deals.
Then we got Frank
Stokes and Mack Maguire,
they were bikers in the Death
Merchants Motorcycle Club,
and they carried out the
intimidation campaign.
- Mack Maguire is who shot Hank?
- When we went to arrest him.
We returned fire and, uh,
Maguire cashed out.
How's Hank?
He's still in the hospital,
but h-he'll be okay.
Little hint of concern
I hear in your voice?
(scoffs) Only for myself.
You know he's not gonna shut
up about it when he comes back.
You thought he was insufferable before.
Okay.
We also believe that Maguire
killed the lawyer Liman Ford,
made it look like he hanged himself.
But that doesn't tell us who
is bankrolling Emerald Eden.
I'm calling that person "The Money."
CASSIDY: So, when we find The Money,
we find who's behind Emerald Eden?
- Mm-hmm.
- GINA: Has anyone seen Mickey?
- She was in the break room. Why?
- Did she tell you
that Skye was gonna be on TV today?
MIRANDA: Today, I am proud to announce
that we are making history.
Which is fitting,
because Edgewater is my history.
My family's timber company
took this undeveloped land
and built it into a thriving town.
A community.
But the timber industry is dying.
Mill closures have hit Edgewater hard.
But this is not the end of Edgewater.
This is a new beginning.
Today, Fraley Horizons
is entering the legal cannabis business.
The Fraleys will be bringing scale
and modern farming
technology to the industry.
This is our chance to build
a new future for Edgewater.
Many more exciting updates are to come,
and those will all be handled
by our new assistant
head of communications
and the next generation of
Fraley leadership, Skye Fraley.
(applause)
My ancestors saw enormous
promise in this town.
A promise I still see, as we expand
our growing operations across Edgewater.
(applause)
Wait.
Miranda Fraley is Emerald Eden?
She's The Money.
She's the one behind the
land grab, the murders, all of it.
- Why would she come forward now?
- Because she can.
Because everybody that did
her dirty work is dead
and they can't tie her to the crimes.
And now, neither can we.
That's what she thinks.
(speaking indistinctly)
citizens of Edgewater
have been threatened,
beaten, forced to sell their land.
And now there are bodies.
Liman Ford, Frank
Stokes, Mack Maguire.
One killed in jail,
one in a shoot-out with my deputies,
and it all leads back to Emerald Eden.
It all leads back to you, Miranda.
If you're asking if I am
behind Emerald Eden, yes, I am.
But solely as a legal means
to purchase real estate.
- Don't play innocent with me.
- I am innocent.
I hired a lawyer to execute those deals,
contracts that are legally binding.
If he used questionable means,
only he can answer to that.
From where?
The morgue?
I am not responsible for the actions
of one rogue employee, Mickey.
And since your handcuffs
aren't out, I assume
you can't prove that
I personally ordered
- any of this violence.
- Not yet.
(laughs): I get it, Mickey.
You're frustrated your father
is a criminal and you missed it,
so now you're seeing
criminals everywhere.
Gaslighting me? That's
how you're gonna play it?
My "play" is to bring
hundreds of jobs to Edgewater.
Because if I don't pivot to cannabis,
some outside company will,
and unlike me,
they won't give a damn about this town.
Save it for your next press conference,
which by the way,
Skye won't be a part of.
I think that's up to Skye, isn't it?
Come on, Skye, we're leaving.
You've heard what Miranda's done.
I heard what you say she did.
But what I've seen is her
trying to save our family.
Skye, I need you to
come with me right now.
I'm sorry, Mom
but I'm a Fraley.
I'm staying.
I thought I raised you better.
Travis, what are you doing here?
I heard the DEA set up shop here,
so I came to talk to
Deputy Director Santos
to make a deal, but she wouldn't see me.
Wait, a deal? For who?
Oh. Right.
Your new client.
You sure know how to pick 'em.
Your dad wants to plead guilty,
take responsibility for everything.
He should.
You think, after I arrest
Miranda, she'll do the same?
Does this have something to
do with the press conference?
Where she gave our daughter
who's in recovery a shout-out?
Please tell me you're not involved.
You know me, I don't even
go to the board meetings.
No, Mick, I this is the
first I've heard of it,
but I have to say,
I think the pivot's kind of genius.
(phone ringing)
- Hello?
- OPERATOR: This is a collect call
- from
- WES: Wes Fox.
OPERATOR:an inmate of
the Edgewater County Jail.
Will you
You're gonna have to talk
to him at some point.
Uh, you couldn't be more wrong.
About that and your family.
Miranda is dirty.
All this real estate that she bought?
She got it through murder.
What'd she do, beat someone
to death with her Fendi bag?
I will not let you gaslight me, too.
Your family always looked down on me.
I was the drug dealer's kid,
and now she wants to make Edgewater
into the Napa Valley of weed.
- She's a hypocrite.
- Yes, she is,
but Mickey, that doesn't
make her a criminal.
What is going on? Are you okay?
I asked Skye to come with me, and she
She what?
Mick, what happened?
Forget it.
Mick.
(lock buzzes)
(door opens)
Boone.
(door closes)
Yeah.
Is that the evidence
on the lawyer's suicide?
Yeah, if you put "suicide" in air quotes.
Look, now that we know that
Miranda is behind Emerald Eden,
I'm looking for anything that
connects her to these murders.
Thank you, Boone.
I've got Travis making
me question my eyes
and Santos making me
question my judgment
and Skye making me question everything.
You, I can always count on.
Well, I can remember a few
times you didn't think
you could count on me,
like the last time we were here.
Yeah, you were investigating
Skye for Brandon's murder.
But you still had my back.
- We should talk about
- No, we don't have to.
I want to. I want to.
I know how hard it was
for you to tell me.
I'm the same way. I don't let people in.
Still, that was selfish of me,
to burden you with
feelings that only I feel.
I'd be lying if I said that,
back when we were partners,
I never
But I'm your boss now.
Thanks.
I know how hard that was for you to say.
Not as hard as being
flat-out rejected
(chuckles)
but still, pretty hard.
(phone vibrates)
The medical examiner said
there's something odd
about Mack Maguire's death.
- She wants me to stop by the morgue.
- Take Cassidy, fill me in after.
Good talk, Lieutenant.
You, too, Sheriff.
You okay?
Yeah, great, just
Crazy to think I was strolling
on a beach yesterday.
Come on, this is so much better.
EMMY: I agree. No crowds, no sunburn,
no sand getting into places you
never want sand getting into.
Thanks for coming, Nathan.
Thank you so much for having us, Emmy.
What's this, uh, odd thing you found?
I extracted the bullets which
hit your vic here, Mack Maguire.
Every bullet was the
same caliber, a 5.56.
All of them picked up
traces of metal and glass
after passing through his truck.
Except this one. This bullet's clean.
No glass, no metal.
It might be nothing, or
Something dressed up as nothing.
I'm glad you flagged that,
Emmy, thank you.
Now, Mack shot one of our deputies,
so I assume there was some
gunpowder residue on his hand?
I will go grab the report.
(sighs)
- What?
- You stood her up on a date?
Oh, my God.
Hank told me. She's clearly into you.
What she just told you about the bullet,
- she could've texted you that.
- Okay. Shh. Thank you.
EMMY: Yeah. Your vic had
gunpowder residue on his right hand.
On his right hand?
- Yes.
- When he came into the morgue,
the knuckle-duster was on his left hand.
- Is that correct?
- Correct.
He landed several blows on the
dead lawyer with his left.
So, he punched with his left hand,
his dominant hand,
but then he shot at us
with his right hand?
We got to go back to that
cabin where he was shot.
Something's not adding up.
Emmy, thank you. Seriously.
My pleasure.
MICKEY: Good work, Boone.
Let me know what you find.
I'm going home to grab
a change of clothes.
It's gonna be a late one.
(car door opens)
(car door closes)
You're not returning my calls.
So, you show up at my house?
We just learned that you lived
with JoAnne Henshaw's family
- while your father was in prison.
- That's right.
(sighs)
Did she ever take you anywhere?
Like, another home, say,
where she might be hiding?
No, just her house up in Deadwater.
Okay.
I just, I had to ask.
I'm sorry I was ignoring your calls.
I thought you wanted to talk about
How you think we shouldn't
do this anymore?
Yeah, I'd like to discuss that, too.
Alec, look
Santos already thinks I'm compromised.
I-If she finds out about us
She's not going to.
And if she does, I don't care.
Alec, you should care. I'm radioactive.
I'm just trying to protect your career.
Mickey,
I walked away from us once and
I hated myself for doing it.
I'm not gonna make that mistake again.
I heard about your
sister-in-law's press conference.
Ex-sister-in-law.
When you were undercover
with that biker gang,
did you ever see Miranda
and Mack Maguire together?
If the biggest business
owner in Edgewater
walked into a biker bar,
I think I'd remember.
Yeah.
Sheriff's office! Show yourself!
Oh, my God. She OD'd.
Skye.
She's barely breathing.
Uh, the Narcan. Right
there in the drawer there.
- Let's turn her.
- ALEC: Get her on her side.
Where's my phone? I need my phone.
I've got to call 911.
There's not enough time. I'll drive.
ALEC: Mickey, she's gonna be okay.
You don't know that.
What if she isn't?
What if, what if she
Hey, look at me.
Don't go there, okay?
(door opens)
TRAVIS: Excuse me.
Hi, I'm looking for Skye Fraley.
I'm gonna give you guys some privacy.
Hey, h-how is she doing?
MICKEY: She's in the ER,
they're pumping her stomach.
Um, the pills that-that she took,
they tested positive for fentanyl.
This is my fault.
- Hey.
- She was in such a good place,
- and then I left, again.
- No.
No, I had words with her
this morning, about Miranda.
Oh, God, if that's the
last thing I say to her
It won't be.
Okay?
(sighs)
Did I see that guy in the ECSO today?
Is he DEA?
MICKEY: Yeah.
His name is Alec.
We came up this way.
Mack's truck was over there,
he opened fire.
- As soon as he did, we lit up his truck.
- Hold fire!
Yet somehow, one of the
bullets that hit him
didn't have a scratch.
What if, somehow,
the shot that killed Maguire
didn't come from us? What if
before we ever got here,
Mack was already dead?
Who would've shot him?
Think about it.
Mack Maguire tied up
loose ends for Miranda.
He knew all about her operation.
But what if he knew too much?
Then she'd need to get rid of him
or have someone else do it for her.
Like the sheriffs.
But you just said someone
else killed Maguire.
The same someone that shot Hank
(gunshot)
causing us to open fire
on Maguire's truck, making it look like
suicide by cop, when actually
It was murder.
BOONE: Maybe the shooter hid over there.
Watch your head.
He was here when he shot Hank.
CASSIDY: Those stones.
That looks intentional.
The shooter may have been smart enough
to take the shell casing,
but he forgot these.
If we're lucky, we can pull touch DNA,
figure out who else Miranda
has working for her.
(phone vibrating)
What's up?
Something happened to Skye.
(indistinct P.A. announcement)
HAZEL: May I pray with you?
Thanks for coming, Hazel.
I wasn't really praying.
I don't know what I was doing,
but I'm not very religious.
You spoke some real spiritual words
when you gave Skye her six-month chip.
I know that what she shares in N.A.
is supposed to remain anonymous,
but did she give any hint
that she was spiraling?
The last few months,
she was doing really good.
But today
I'm sorry, Mickey.
I should've called you.
She talked about using again.
And last night, she didn't show
up for her nine-month chip.
Oh, God.
When I gave her her six-month chip,
she told me she wanted my dad
to give her the next one.
I kept that from happening.
- (crying): It's my fault.
- Hey. Hey.
I'm Skye's sponsor. I failed her, too.
It is a helpless feeling
when someone we love slips.
I know it doesn't feel like enough,
but all we can do now is pray.
(sniffles)
Or whatever your version is.
(siren wailing)
(indistinct P.A. announcement)
Is Skye gonna be okay?
Hey, Rick. We, uh, we don't know.
Thank you for coming.
My mom's downstairs. She'd love
to come up, too, if that's
Just thank her for the flowers.
I'm sorry, Mickey. If I knew she was gonna
buy fentanyl, I would have stopped her
- or called you.
- Yeah.
You know what, Rick? Uh
no one's allowed to see Skye yet,
so why don't I walk you downstairs,
and I can say hi to your mom? Yeah?
My mom was always shocked
whenever I relapsed.
But addicts fool the
people that love them.
Don't blame yourself, Aunt Mickey.
MICKEY: Skye
was struggling, I
think I pushed her over the edge.
Sheriff Fox?
Skye is still unconscious, but stable.
We pumped fentanyl from her system,
but we won't know the extent
of any possible brain
injury until she wakes up.
Doctor, I noticed Skye had a
purple froth around her mouth.
I've never seen fentanyl do that before.
That was from the smoothie
we found in her stomach.
She must have washed
the pills down with it.
I'll be sure to keep you updated.
Where was the cup?
If Skye washed her pills
down with a smoothie,
then where is the cup?
And these pills, they're
just scattered everywhere.
What did she, take a handful
and then scatter the rest for fun?
Come to think of it,
- this whole thing looks
- It looks staged, right?
- Did you take the trash out today?
- No.
And Skye doesn't unless I
ask her a hundred times.
(phone ringing)
- Hello?
- OPERATOR: This is a collect call from
- WES: Wes Fox!
- OPERATOR: an inmate
There's no smoothie cup.
Somebody did not want us to find this.
I got to retrace Skye's steps
from the moment she left the Fraleys'
to when she got here.
Travis, do not leave Skye's side.
I don't think she overdosed,
I think she was poisoned.
I'll work my sources and find
out who deals in those pills.
- And who they sold them to.
- Thank you.
Gina.
GINA: Mickey.
I need a rush on prints and toxicology.
This is about Skye, isn't it?
You think someone did this to her?
I do, but how do you know that?
I just got a call.
I know where Skye was before
she went to your house today.
Where?
(lock buzzes)
About damn time.
Why did Skye come see you?
Answer the question, Dad.
Why did Skye come see you?
I've been trying to answer the question.
I've been calling you
the whole damn day.
All right, Skye came to see me
to ask if I really did
steal the DEA's $3 million.
- Uh-huh, which you did.
- Course I did.
I told her the truth.
First time for everything.
See, I was, um, prepared
to face her disappointment,
but Skye didn't get mad at me.
No, Skye wanted to ask
- Ask you what?
- She asked
how we picked the lock on
the DEA's armored truck.
Why would she want to know that?
'Cause she thinks Miranda
Fraley's hiding something.
She said that you confronted
her about it this morning.
Something to do with a "Emerald Eden"?
I don't know, couldn't make
heads or tails of it, but
she wanted to break into the
safe in Miranda's office.
She said there's-there's documents
in there, she wants to give them to you.
She only pretended to side with Miranda.
Your girl is a Fox through and through.
Yeah, and she got hurt
trying to carry out a plan
inspired by your crimes.
Yet another great example you've set.
Oh, no, what do you mean she got hurt?
No, no, no, no.
No, you no!
What happened?
Gina didn't want to tell you because
she didn't want to hurt your feelings,
but Skye overdosed.
But she's okay, though, right?
- I have to go.
- No.
No, no, no, no, no. She's okay?
- Our girl's okay?
- All we can do is wait and pray.
Mickey!
You got to let me know!
(lock buzzes)
(door opens)
Mickey. We're so sorry about Skye.
If you want to go back to
the hospital, we got you.
No, I want to be here.
I want to find who did this.
- How can we help?
- I need a gut check.
If Skye was digging into Emerald Eden,
and she found something
threatening to Miranda,
am I crazy to think that Miranda
would try to kill her own niece?
BOONE: You know Miranda
better than we do,
but based off of what we found,
you're not crazy.
There's compelling evidence that
Mack Maguire was already dead
when Hank and I got to that cabin,
and I think Miranda had him killed.
If Skye did dig something
up on Miranda
CASSIDY: Maybe Miranda decided
that she posed too much of a risk.
I asked for a toxicology
report on the smoothie.
It just came in.
No prints were found on the cup,
but it did test positive for fentanyl.
That's the other thing.
Skye wouldn't just take a
smoothie from a stranger,
but she trusts Miranda.
- Where are you going?
- To talk to Miranda.
Just talk?
EVA: Sheriff Fox.
I've already given you
two hours of my time.
If you need more,
just schedule it with Gina.
I just got a call from the
Edgewater County Jail.
You went to see your father today?
Those conversations are recorded,
as I'm sure you know,
and for your sake, I hope you
didn't discuss your case.
I was talking about my daughter.
She's in the hospital
for a drug overdose.
I'm-I'm sorry, I didn't know.
(lock buzzes)
Is she okay?
We don't know yet.
For what it's worth,
I've been after the DEA
to tighten up on
prescription stimulants.
They're far too easily available.
Thank you, but it wasn't a
