Transcript Emily Beynon.
Mr. Peter Gunn, please, I have a taxi.
Mr. Gunn, Mr. Gunn, as you can see, I am a punctual man.
Also, I am a man of few words, and I
For you brought a new kind of love to me
Cause you brought a new kind of love to me.
I'll make it brief.
I have been authorized by the Richardson
Quine Insurance Company and several others
to hire you to investigate a series of robberies.
In the past two years, there have been
several robberies all along the riverfront.
And the total amount that my company has
been liable for is $267,000.
Mr. Quine is not happy about this.
No one knows how the gang has been operating.
And amazingly, not one of the stolen items
has ever turned up.
Exactly four hours and 32
minutes ago, a Mr. Moffat was found
dead, pierced by a steel shaft
from an underwater spear gun.
We insure the deceased's place of business,
the Moffat and Garvin warehouse on the riverfront.
Will you accept the assignment?
My price is high.
Well, as Mr. Quine says, when one wishes
the best, one must be prepared to pay.
If I accept the assignments on these terms, a
percentage of the items recovered plus an expense account.
Call me by noon tomorrow.
Expenses will be repaid.
Paid only upon receipt of accurate records.
Please be careful of the carbons.
Oh, dear, dear, dear.
The taxi meter.
Sorry, no business today.
I didn't want to talk business.
Just wanted to talk.
My pleasure.
Daily destroys the mood.
I'll set the scene.
We're on the terrace of your villa
overlooking the Mediterranean.
We just finished dinner.
Peacocks, tongue, and champagne.
The muted sound of gypsy violins drifts up
through the pines.
The candles flicker in the warm breeze.
You've dismissed the servants for the
night and we're alone.
Oh.
And you were saying?
Who put a steel spear through Charlie Moffat?
Bad line.
Doesn't fit at all.
Did you tell the gentleman we're closed?
He just wanted to ask some questions.
For instance?
Who put a steel spear through Charlie Moffat?
Police?
Insurance.
The police I gotta talk to.
You I don't.
Better start walking out of here while you still can.
I'd be happy to, after a few questions.
The recent death of my partner has left me
too upset to talk to anybody.
Now run away.
When I'm ready, I'll walk.
Slowly.
Trouble?
Ask him.
Who are you?
Lieutenant Jacoby.
Police.
He was bothering my wife.
You're slipping.
Don't know how I missed it.
I'd like to hear some answers.
The recent death of my partner has left me
too upset to talk to anybody.
Warrant.
Without my lawyer.
At least you spelled the name right.
The story has it that you were trying to
break up partnership with Moffat.
And you were quarreling with him.
Well, any comment?
My lawyer.
Come on, you'll call him from headquarters.
Now, where were we?
I don't think we were.
Don't you?
Little dark to see your wedding ring.
There you are.
Baby, my, my, you're getting cuter every day.
Come on, now, eat it.
Now, how are you going to be a big,
strong boy if you don't eat?
Come on, now.
You've got to get all those arms and legs
going strong as can be.
That's my baby.
Come on.
Captain Jones?
I ain't Captain Jones, son.
That's him.
Always takes a nap after breakfast.
Well, what's in your mind, son?
Come on, baby.
Come on.
I understand if you need any information
about the waterfront, you, uh, you can get it here.
Well, it ain't that I'm no gossip.
Just keep my ear to the ground.
For instance, you're probably Pete Gunn,
the man who's looking for information.
That's right.
You on my side?
Yep.
Think I'll go along with you.
I need some information about a group of men.
Stole over a quarter of a million dollars'
worth of articles during the past two years.
Yep, been reading the papers.
Last night they killed a Mr. Moffat when
he surprised them at work.
Yep, read that too.
Now, if you're gonna ask me if I got some
people in my books who've been buying
equipment and who might be them, the answer's no.
Thanks.
Now, I need some technical information.
Suppose I wanted to float something on the
river, not a boat.
Float anything?
Anywhere.
Fine.
Second, the best place to hide something.
Sink it in a quiet place.
Mark it so you can find it again.
Third, someone to search the bottom.
Who's the best diver on the waterfront?
Muffet's part in the garden.
Guess you wouldn't want him.
Then there's young Jeff Jefferson.
Used to be underwater demolition in the Navy.
You can't miss him right down the street.
Thanks.
And, uh, listen for that crazy beat.

© BF-WATCH TV 2021 Good job.
For you.
Pass me.
Who needs it?
Kick off your shoes, throw away that tie.
This is our own little island.
Our own little pink world.
Oh, the swim was just wonderful.
Aloha.
No flowers?
Just a moment.
That's better.
What's wrong?
You don't like Olga?
I almost forgot why I came here.
All right, friend.
What's your trouble?
In two words, Mike Garvin.
I'd like to have a look at his warehouse.
I need your help to get there underwater.
Up through the trap door?
Doesn't sound very legal.
It isn't.
Okay.
Let's go.
Pardon me.
Now, this mouthpiece leads to demand air.
If you want air, just breathe.
Try it.
Don't hold your breath when you come to the surface.
Your lungs will explode.
Try it.
Okay.
Stick close to me.
Tap me if there's any trouble.
Got it?
I'll let you know when we get back, if we do.
Is this it?
I'll go first.
You keep an eye on the window.
If you hear anything, whistle.
How about one of these spear guns?
Oh, no, be careful of those.
Those things are more dangerous than regular guns.
Look, um
Spoke to me about this.
Suppose I want to hide something on the
bottom of the river.
Anything.
How do I go about it?
Waterproof wrappings.
Plastic spray to make a film around it.
Last as long as you live.
On this river, where do I go?
I'll show you.
There are only two or three good spots
where the current don't touch.
Here, here, and here.
Think you can remember them?
Well, I can try.
Now, now, wait a minute.
Don't you go off without your receipt.
That's the boy.
There you are.
Take it easy now.
Hello, baby.
Are you hungry again?
Come on, baby.
Come on, honey.
Come on, baby.
Come on, honey.
Come on, honey.
Come on, honey.
Come on, honey.
Come on, honey.
There it is.
It's part of the sole Romar art shipment.
It's been missing over a year and a half.
There's plenty more where that came from.
Look, Pete, we got a diver checking the
bottom where Moffitt was killed.
Now, when he gets back, you tell him where the loot is.
It'll be picked up and turned over to the
insurance company.
End of assignment.
All right.
Where are you going?
Out.
I've got the commissioner to face.
So?
So you recover the loot as well, but I don't
even know who stole it, let alone murdered Moffat.
Look, don't tell me your problems.
I've got my own.
Name one.
You.
Look, Peter.
Jacoby.
Yeah.
My diver's on his way in.
Hi, friend.
Well, aloha.
This is it.
All there was.
Anything unusual about the gun?
No, it's a commercial deal.
Make them by the thousands.
I'll let the lab take a look at this.
Would it leave any identifying marks like a rifle barrel?
It's possible.
Get you for breaking and entering?
I'll deny the whole thing.
It won't be necessary.
Breaking and entering?
Reckon Olga would dig him?
We could make it a jolly trio.
Olga?
Olga's a big girl.
She's about this tall.
All right, come on, come on.
This isn't important.
Pete found all the stuff that the gang had
stolen these last two years.
Underwater.
Well, looks like my pupil's been studying his scuba.
I'm certain it isn't a gang.
It's more like a neat, efficient one-man operation.
All right, tell Jeff where the stuff is.
I'll work much faster if you show me the spot.
Right.
I'll work much faster if you show me the spot.
Oh, Jacoby's holding him for murder as well as theft.
Funny thing.
Everything with Jefferson was always the best.
A gold-plated besides.
Twice I found wet flipper prints in the warehouse,
and both times they were the newest Italian kind.
Perfect marks.
I figured he'd be the only one who's good
at the trouble and expense of importing them.
Then when I saw you going to his place,
I knew something was going to pop.
Pop is the word.
Edie, meet the man who saved my life.
Mike Garvin, Edie Hart.
What's hard?
Thank you for Pete.
Ah, nothing at all.
Look, I'm going to have to be shoving off.
Don't, Mike.
Please.
Okay, Pete.
I'll be seeing you around.
Sure.
Miss Hart?
Bye.
What's that?
This?
Hmm?
Those are carbon copies of my expense account.
Mr. Leach paid carefully, cautiously, but in full.
Any plans later?
Well, I will have, since you make them.
You've got plans.
You've got plans.
Well,
I will have, since you make them.
