A Prison of Love

[upbeat theme music playing]
[funky music playing]
How we doing, Bill?
This gas is like kissing Buddha,
and he's slipping me some tongue.
Pull a couple teeth,
make yourself some earrings.
You sound a little too happy.
Maybe I should adjust your dose.
-Not if you want to keep your fingers.
-[Faye laughs]
[Leanne] Okey-dokey.
Now open wide for me.
Leanne?
[inhales]
[exhaling] I love you.
[Faye's voice] What did you just say?
I said, "I love you, Leanne."
You son of a bitch.
-What?
-Pack your shit and get out of my life.
Me?
[inhaling]
Leanne ♪
[upbeat music playing]
How far did you run?
Oh, who knows?
I do. One block.
Then I watched you eat a muffin
in the driveway.
Well, I also ate one in the closet
while I was changing.
Who are you, the muffin police?
[Mama Margaret sighs]
-What's that about?
-What?
[Leanne sighs]
[scoffs] She also farts when she stands.
I just ignore all of it.
Well, you continue to sit and do nothing,
and I'll go see what's wrong.
-You wanted them here.
-You did, too.
Oh, we both know that's a lie.
[Mama Margaret continues sighing]
Do I detect a heavy heart?
Oh, no, no. I am blessed.
What are you doing with your purse?
Are you going somewhere?
I don't know.
Your bathroom is a broken hip
waiting to happen.
High pile rug, no toilet extender.
What am I, Superman?
-If you need a booster seat, we'll get it.
-Don't bother. We're quitting this place.
That's why I have my purse.
What on earth are y'all talking about?
You're not going anywhere.
Hey, we gave it a shot.
It ain't working out.
It's been three days.
You don't have a stick of lard
in your kitchen.
And your mailman's a woman.
Gary's not a woman.
He just has a very luxurious ponytail.
Well, we don't care for it.
Okay, so we've got some bumps
to smooth out. I can fix those.
We really want y'all to be happy here.
Don't we, Carol?
Yes, desperately.
And your sister seems to think
it's our fault that she has an empty life.
That's not new since you moved in.
You know, if your mailman's so proud
of her legs, why doesn't she shave them?
He's a man, Daddy.
[lilting music playing]
Okay. This is good. Good.
Good, good. Clean slate.
You know what this is?
-Good?
-Ah.
You sure you don't want to have a seat?
Maybe take the bib off.
I have never felt more free, huh?
Faye dumping me
has made me see my life from 30,000 feet.
The string has been snipped,
and my balloon is flying high.
Got to be honest, Dad.
I don't think selling the dealership
is a great move.
Because you're afraid to be free?
Because I'm afraid of my wife
leaving me for a guy with a job.
Oh, Tyler.
The American dream
has sunk its claws deep into your sack.
You're brainwashed, just like I was.
Playing everything by the book, huh?
Climbing that invisible ladder. To where?
To paying off the minivan
you told me to buy.
I got the one
with the vacuum cleaner in it.
How old are you?
-My God, and you're still humping a desk?
You should be in New York playing jazz.
I don't like jazz.
Well, nobody does, except the players.
Be a player, huh?
Hey, what do you say
we grab a couple Bloody Marys,
go down to the dump,
and shoot some rats, huh?
It's 9:00 a.m.
That's why I said Bloody Marys.
[funky music playing]
You're wasting your time, old man.
We've got your car keys.
[Papa John] That's how they do it.
First, they take your car keys.
The next thing you know,
you're keistering raisins for toilet wine.
You act like you're
in some sort of prison.
Well, you have our keys.
We can't go anywhere.
What does it sound like to you?
A prison of love?
[cell phone rings]
Tyler, I'll have to get back to you.
I've got a bit of a crisis on my hands.
Mine's worse.
Dad just laid everyone off, and now
he's arguing with his cardboard cutout.
[yelling indistinctly]
Well, make him stop.
I think we're past that, Mom.
What happened to us?
We're not trying to punish you.
We want you safe.
We love you.
We can be safe in our own home.
You burnt down your kitchen.
We don't need a kitchen.
We're from pioneer stock.
My grandma cooked beaver on a spit.
Yes, that's right. I forgot.
You two rode west in a covered wagon.
Carol, I got to go. Bill is having
a nervous breakdown at the dealership.
What? You don't deserve that. I'll go.
-You just want to get out of here.
-We all want to get out of this hellhole.
Carol's in charge.
Of Leanne's problem.
-[stomps her foot]
-Everything's my problem.
Just like that, you're outnumbered.
Make your move, Stretch.
You are a devil child.
[lilting music playing]
What were you thinking,
firing all those people?
I was thinking of Moses in the desert.
I set my people free.
You scared them half to death.
We're all scared
when the cage door first opens.
Why does everybody in my life
feel like they're a prisoner?
Oh. Keep asking yourself hard questions.
That's where the growth is.
Tyler, your daddy's going to take
a step back from the business.
You can't fire me. I quit.
Nope, you're fired.
Okay, I need you to be the boss now.
Now? Like, right now?
I know there's greatness in you.
You just got to find it.
Allow me to translate.
"Blah, blah, blah, blah."
You've got recreational vehicles
in your blood, son.
And now's your chance to show
all of Knoxville and parts of Arkansas.
See? This is what she does, huh?
She builds you up,
and then you… you cheat on her,
and she doesn't want you anymore.
Bill Murphy, get in the car!
Greatness.
[lively music playing]
[Leanne] Now you listen to me, mister.
You've already had your midlife crisis.
You don't get two.
I'm not going to lie.
Today did get away from me.
What were you thinking,
taking gas at the dentist?
You know every drug hits you too hard.
I didn't hear you complaining
when I took that Viagra.
That wasn't me. That was Faye.
Why does this keep happening to me?
Because you're spinning out, Bill.
I really am.
You know what? That's why this works.
What?
Us.
Faye doesn't know me.
Hell, I don't know me,
but you, Leanne, you know me.
There's not a wronger tree
you could be barking up.
[scoffs] Come on. We make sense.
We've always made sense.
Let's roll it back.
I tell you what we're going to do,
and by we, I mean you.
You're going to gather your marbles,
put them back in your head,
and apologize to that woman.
I think we're beyond that.
Faye told me to get out of her life.
She's just pregnant.
Trust me, she'll forgive you.
She threw a tongue scraper at me.
Hard.
Well, just tell her she's glowing,
admit you're a gigantic butthole,
rub her feet, and bing, bang, boom,
back to raising a baby out of wedlock.
What are you doing?
Pulling over. You're home.
I don't have a home.
Yes, you do. Off you go.
I don't want to go out there.
There's bad things out there.
Responsibilities, angry hormonal women.
There's an angry hormonal woman
in this car right now,
and she's going to have
to double patch tonight.
This is the first time
I've felt safe all day, sitting here.
Bill, I'm not your safe place anymore,
and that extends to all my vehicles.
[sobbing]
Nope, that's not going to work.
Off you go. Skedaddle.
Please don't make me.
I'm so sick of all of y'all!
Steal my keys, I steal yours. Tit for tat.
Please don't curse, John.
Well, Carol must be doing
pretty well for herself.
This is a spaceship.
There's no key on this thing.
Well, that's curious.
Maybe it's like the Alexa.
Car start.
This button's red.
That's got to mean something.
And away we go.
-[car alarm blaring]
-Oh, no.
Run for it.
[nervous chuckle]
Hey, Carol, uh, we were…
We were headed to the store.
You need anything?
You guys aren't coming inside?
Why, so I can surrender my sword
to the other general?
Your daddy's a proud man.
Why do you see living here as a defeat?
Because we have no independence.
We're being babysat like children.
You're always trying
to make us drink water.
When did people get so thirsty?
Hey, when I was a kid,
you stuck your tongue out on a rainy day,
got the job done.
[sighs] Okay.
[sighs] Look, I get it.
I, too, am a citizen
of the People's Republic of Leanneistan.
No, but you chose to live here.
Doesn't mean I didn't lose
a little freedom.
But the key is to think
about what you've gained.
Leanne pays the bills.
She cooks the meals.
She lays your clothes out for you
like they're a flat person on your bed.
I would have never put this together.
But I used to take care of everyone.
And aren't you tired of it?
Of course I am, but that's my lot in life.
And I wasn't raised to be a freeloader.
[exhales] It makes your daughter happy.
That's not freeloading.
That's good parenting.
-[car approaching]
-Oh, crap, it's her.
I'm glad we talked. Now smile, wave.
Maybe she'll make us some meatloaf.
[lilting music playing]
I told Leanne you wanted meatloaf.
Not hungry, Judas.
Think it'll get Bill out of the car?
I don't want that nut in here.
He's like a stray dog.
Once you feed him, he's yours forever.
[Carol] Mm.
We could drop him at the pound.
They'd neuter him for free.
Why is everyone insane today?
I hate to say it, but you bring
a lot of the stress on yourself.
How so?
You try to solve everyone's problems.
Well, that's my lot in life.
Oh my God, you're Mama, and I'm Daddy.
Take that back.
I can't. I'm Daddy.
So, you want to walk me
through why you're sitting out here
alone in the car like some kind of weirdo?
I've lost my way, John.
Everything I do seems
to ruin the life of someone I care about.
Hmm. Look, someday you're gonna get old.
And the world's gonna keep progressing,
and you won't be able to keep up.
And you'll feel useless.
What's that got to do with me?
Does everything have to be about you?
Well, right now, yes.
I'm looking back at my life,
and I'm filled with regret.
Regret is a real man's co-pilot.
I-I appreciate the tough love,
but I'm feeling a little tender.
Are you, precious?
Again, tender, John.
Well, tough love's all I got.
You want me to tap out
and get Margaret in here?
Don't think less of me, but yes.
I couldn't possibly think less of you.
Dear Heavenly Father,
please watch over our beloved Bill.
This past year, he's played fast and loose
with your sacred commandments.
But he sees the error of his ways,
and he asks for your mercy.
I-I think he's done with me.
Oh, no, he's always listening.
He's always watching over you.
I was hoping there was
a couple times he'd looked away.
Well, it's all right.
Love makes people crazy.
But the Bill I know is gonna
stand by the woman carrying his baby.
[scoffs] One pesky little catch,
that woman hates my guts.
Too bad.
Pull your head out of your mud maker
and play the hand you're dealt.
Well, John, I think I know two people
who could use that advice,
minus the gutter talk.
[Papa John grunts]
I really don't want to.
-Well, no one does.
-[Bill exhales]
That's the lesson
we have to relearn every day.
Does it ever get any easier?
[both] No.
What do I tell her?
You'll think of it on the way.
Now, everybody buckle up.
My peripheral vision
isn't what it used to be.
[lilting music playing]
I could report it as a stolen vehicle.
Give them time to sit in the pokey
and think about what they've done.
Wow, that is uncharacteristically mean.
I'm tired, Carol.
Well, well, well.
Look who's finally back.
Where on earth
have y'all been with my car?
Well, we talked a little sense into Bill,
and ourselves while we were at it.
We're staying here,
and he went to fix things with Faye.
And how'd that go?
She changed the locks.
And these were strewn across the lawn.
So, uh,
pillow and a blanket?
Absolutely not.
-What?
-You heard me.
Carol, take Bill
to the furthest Denny's and await my call.
Hey, I could use a Grand Slam.
No, you two are staying put.
And I know that may wound your pride,
but all of our egos
are taking a hit today, including mine.
Give me my keys.
Where are you going?
To beg the woman
who stole my husband to take him back.
Oh my, that is humbling.
[lilting music playing]
Your receptionist tried to stop me.
This is not her fault.
Leanne, wh-- What are you doing here?
Bill Murphy is no longer my nightmare.
He's yours. You broke it, you buy it.
I am through with that man.
It doesn't work that way, sister.
You got half of him inside of you.
Worst decision of my life.
Not the baby, just the father.
Baby's a blessing.
Always.
But you should have thought of that
when you did unbiblical things with him.
Who still loves you.
He doesn't love me. He loves what we were.
And if it were so fantastic,
you and I would have never met.
And I have to carry that
along with this baby.
[sobs]
Well, here we are, sister.
I don't know why I keep calling you that,
but I'm not gonna stop.
[cries]
And I am not upset
that a pregnant woman is crying,
because you are not my problem.
Bill is not my problem.
Your baby is not my problem.
Well, don't just stand there.
Say something.
My water just broke.
Say something else!
[lilting music playing]
[grunting]
-[panting]
-Come on, push. This is the big one.
You said that 14 big ones ago!
You're a liar.
-[panting]
-Push harder, sister!
I hate Bill right now.
I hated him first.
[both grunt]
[lilting music playing]
How's the baby?
Perfect.
How's Faye?
Eh, still full of rage and hatred.
For me. Not for you.
Your stock went way up today.
Well, I did just cut
your love child's umbilical cord.
I promise you that's the last time
you'll ever have to do that.
So, we're not hearing any wedding bells?
[sighs] We reached a tentative agreement.
I can be part of the baby's life
as long as I'm not part of hers
in any way, shape, or form.
Sorry about that.
Yeah, me too.
So, uh…
pillow and a blanket?
Absolutely.
Thank you.
At the Hampton Inn.
I guess I deserve that.
What you really deserve
is a sleeping bag behind the dumpster.
But the miracle of life
has made me generous.
