The Ansan at Place Pasteur
just got a bomb threat, boss.
We're following a young woman,
blonde hair, denim jacket,
pink backpack.
- How can you be so cruel?
- [Maigret] Whoa, whoa.
[people yelling]
Now you'll know
what it feels like.
[gun shot]
You know why she did it?
Because I took her backpack.
- [Kernavel] What was in it?
- [Janvier] A man's suit.
Extensive staining,
which I suspect is blood.
[Lucas] The victim had no ID.
She threw
her phone into the Seine.
You know the young woman
who was on the news?
She is my daughter, Adeline.
[Louise] Claude Van Damme.
[Claude]
Just like the movie star.
What's this for? Why did you--
Because I think he knew her.
[Lucas] We found a connection
between Adeline and the bank,
a Genevieve Belvoir.
[Genevieve]
I may have met Adeline,
but if I did,
I don't remember her.
[Genevieve] And that's the line,
Claude. We know nothing.
[Lucas] Adeline had nearly
a quarter of a million euros
under a mattress.
[Kernavel] Director Guichard.
- Maigret.
- Sir.
You do know
he's being investigated
by the Inspection Generale
des Services
for his role
in yesterday's debacle.
You're too close to him.
It can affect your judgment.
- [Maigret] What's this?
- [LaPointe] It's a church.
Thank you. Find out. What is it?
Where is it? Why is it?
What did you do?
- Whose blood is on that suit?
- Get out!
[intense music playing]
[Janvier] Boss?
[dramatic music playing]
[thunder]
How is he?
A couple of cracked ribs
and a concussion,
but he's awake and talking.
Louise.
I'm sorry about this.
What on earth happened?
An accident.
I wasn't paying attention.
Stepped out into the road.
[groans]
Mmm. Yeah, cracked ribs.
They will hurt.
[groans]
Sooner I can come home,
the better.
Andrea said
you were concussed, so,
you're staying here tonight
at least.
[exhales]
- You should send them home.
- Mm-mm.
It's after midnight.
I need two minutes with them, please.
I'll talk to the doctors,
get them to
keep you here all week.
[laughs]
Two minutes, no more.
Okay.
Janvier, LaPointe,
you were talking to me
about the Hangman.
No, no, no.
First, tell us what happened.
It wasn't an accident, was it?
It was Claude Van Damme.
Check his car.
I fired two rounds.
- Maybe I hit him.
- He ran you over.
Right, we'll arrest the bastard.
No, leave him.
Keep him under pressure.
Check his car,
but the official story is
it was a hit-and-run.
Okay?
Uh, speaking of rounds,
where's my gun?
Paramedics recovered it.
- I've got it.
- Okay. LaPointe.
Tell me again what you found.
Ten years ago,
a 21-year-old man named
Emile Klein hanged himself
from the Church of Saint-Pholien
in Louven.
He worked in the science
department at the university
where Adeline Jeunet
studied biology.
And where Genevieve Belvoir
studied astronomy.
Good work. [chuckles]
Really good.
In the morning,
deep background on Klein
and see if he fits the suit
that was in Adeline's backpack.
And Adeline's phone.
Keep looking for her phone.
Night, boss.
Night, Louise.
Hey, Andrea.
Thanks for coming to get me.
Any time. Good night.
- [Louise] Bye, Karim.
- [LaPointe] Good night, Louise.
Dr. Masson is going to give you
something for the pain, my love.
And I'll sit here
so you can't escape.
[exhales] Mm.
[doctor] All set.
Thank you.
I know it wasn't an accident.
You went looking for trouble,
and you found it.
[soft music playing]
I'm sorry.
Every time you don't
come home when you say you will,
I worry.
Not just worry.
It's like, it's like
there's this knot in my chest,
because this might be the day
that you don't come home.
So when I opened the door
and I saw Janvier
there looking scared, I,
[crying] I thought
you were dead.
Hey.
I'm not.
I'm here.
Stupid.
I'm not dead.
[theme music plays]
[music ends]
So I hear Maigret had a fight
with a car, and the car won?
That's funny.
What about the suit?
Yes, it could've been
worn by Emile Klein
or any other man in Europe
who's 1.72 meters tall.
Know anything
more about the blood?
It is blood.
- That's not helpful.
- Let me be even more unhelpful.
Klein was O-positive.
The blood
on the suit is A-negative.
You've identified one dead man.
You need to find another one.
How'd you know he's dead?
I also analyzed the sleeves
where the blood is thickest
and found bone fragments
and brain tissue.
So the other man
was shot in the head.
And the man in the suit,
who could be Emile Klein,
he was right there.
Like trying to stop
the bleeding.
- So someone was murdered.
- [Moers] Yes.
Now you just need
to find out who.
No, you're not going in there.
- Maigret, it's the rules.
- My legs are fine.
It's ridiculous.
Ah, the wounded hero.
And the lovely Louise.
How are you, my dear?
Very well, Director.
Please tell Maigret
he has to use the wheelchair.
I will not.
Can't have one of my officers
looking like an invalid.
What if there
are news cameras outside?
Would you give us a moment, please?
So, hit-and-run, I hear.
- Any idea who?
- No, sir.
But you were on police business.
I was talking to
Claude Van Damme.
- Did you learn anything?
- No, sir.
Well, that ought
to tell you something.
Time to drop the case.
We have a new lead.
A new lead to what?
Like I said before,
suicide is not a crime.
[soft music playing]
I was looking
at the paramedic's report.
Hmm?
Paramedics from last night.
"Strong smell of alcohol,"
they said.
"Lying in the middle
of the street," they said.
So this narrative
can go one of two ways:
brave officer run down
in the course of his duty,
or,
something else entirely.
I won't tell you again.
Drop the case.
Take a break.
Let Louise look after you
at home for a few days. Hmm?
Better still, get out of Paris.
Huh?
Saint-Fiacre.
Oh, the country air.
Nice to see you, Louise.
So the blood on the suit
isn't Emile Klein's?
Nope.
Then we're looking
for another man.
Another dead man or woman.
If the suit is Emile Klein's,
then he was at the shooting.
Maybe he even did it.
Well, come over.
I've found a connection
between Emile Klein,
Adeline Jeunet,
and the other two.
The in-house paper of
University Paris-Champigny
was very helpful.
[LaPointe] "Ten years later:
where are they now?"
[Lucas] Mm-hmm.
There's Claude Van Damme,
and Adeline.
And Genevieve.
- Is that
- Yep.
Emile Klein.
Genevieve was lying.
They all knew each other.
Madame Prosecutor, good morning.
Morning.
- Have you heard from Maigret?
- Not since last night.
He's still in hospital.
Well, since he
hasn't told you, I will.
Director Guichard has decided
not to pursue the case.
But this is crazy.
Last night, he--
[Kernavel] Last night, what?
Is Maigret's accident
connected to the case?
Uh, no. We think
it was a hit-and-run.
Right.
Anyway, as I say,
the Adeline Jeunet case
is closed.
But the Brigade Fluviale
are still searching
the Seine for her phone.
It could be the key
to the whole thing.
Call them off.
My IGDS interview,
can I call that off, too?
That's not up to me.
Good morning.
[mysterious music plays]
[phone ringing]
- Louise?
- Hey, it's Maigret.
Have you been shut down?
Uh
Yes. Kernavel just left.
Bring everything
to my apartment.
Maigret, no.
That's not happening.
You've been ordered to rest.
Which is it, boss?
Bring the stuff or not?
- Fine.
- Bring it.
And the rest?
The divers looking
for Adeline's phone,
the bullet in Van Damme's car.
Close all that down, too?
Yes, but slowly.
Sometimes people
don't answer their phones,
messages don't get through.
Got it.
Janvier will bring
what we've got to you.
LePointe will check
on Van Damme's car,
and I will be interviewed
by IGDS.
IGDS already know that what
happened was my responsibility,
so don't answer
any questions you don't like.
Understood?
Understood.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
You're incorrigible.
Ah, I think you mean
incorrigible.
Would you like
another cracked rib?
[music continues]
What we're trying to understand
is the progression of events.
Okay.
Starts with
Chief Inspector Maigret
responding to a call
for assistance.
A call which, by the way,
was answered
by a dozen other units.
You mean
we shouldn't have responded?
It continues with an entire
section on a drone
following a young woman
across Paris
because Maigret thinks her
behavior is suspicious.
It was suspicious.
And it ends with him
confronting the woman,
who then kills herself.
This is filmed on
a dozen iPhones,
to the great embarrassment
of the Judiciaire.
- Is there a question?
- [Cavre] Yes. Why?
Why do any of it?
There was a bomb threat.
We neutralized the threat.
But there actually
wasn't a threat,
and a woman ended up dead.
From what we know,
a completely innocent woman.
She made bomb threats,
ran from the police,
possessed an unlicensed firearm.
You know what I mean.
No one could've
anticipated the gun.
[Cavre] Well, Maigret
thought she had a bomb.
He should've anticipated
that she would have a gun.
He said so himself.
He trusted his usual
wild intuitions,
and this time, finally,
his luck ran out.
His case closure rate's
over 90%. That's not luck.
You want to damage him because
you weren't up to the mark.
Just because you grow a beard
doesn't make you Maigret.
I have work to do.
[door opens]
Wow, she's loyal.
[sighs] She's in love with him.
She'd follow him over a cliff.
I like your beard.
Shut up.
[Janvier] It's from
the university newspaper.
It's about the science students
from Adeline's year
and what they've done
with their lives
since they left university.
So Genevieve Belvoir
works at the Bank de Vincent
and is the proud mother
of two children.
Claude Van Damme
owns a medical supply business.
His wife runs a restaurant,
and they have one daughter,
Lucille.
But all poor Adeline gets is,
"Adeline Jeunet
works in public health."
There's even less
about Emile Klein.
Hmm.
"Unidentified."
How come the university
couldn't identify him?
Maybe because he was just
a humble lab assistant,
and no one remembered him.
Also, he only worked there
for two years.
He was fired
for substance abuse.
The bloodstained suit,
was it his?
Size-wise, it could be,
but Morse says
the blood type isn't Klein's.
And it's not just blood
on the suit.
There's brain tissue
and bone fragments, too.
So someone was shot in the head,
and Klein was there.
That's the theory, yeah.
"Now you'll know
what it feels like."
That's what Adeline
said before she shot herself.
So she was there when this
other someone was killed?
You know he shouldn't
be doing this, don't you?
He should be resting.
Yeah, but he's our boss.
If he says, "Jump,"
we say, "How high?"
Oh, another comedian.
[phone ringing]
Janvier.
[knocking]
Yeah.
Is it a purple case?
Fantastic.
I will be right there.
- [Louise] Police Judiciaire.
- Louise.
Brigade Fluviale just called.
They found Adeline's phone.
Brilliant. Go get it.
Take it to Mes.
Bye, Louise,
and sorry about the joke.
This was in a brake-light case
in Van Damme's car.
Good shooting, boss.
[soft music plays]
Right.
I intend to keep going,
but since we're officially
shut down, if anyone asks--
We've now got three
unexplained deaths.
We're staying.
Don't look at me.
I just live here.
I have to get changed.
[Maigret] Okay.
Next step, we use
the ammunition as ammunition.
This was in the rear brake light
of your car.
It was fired by the cop
you ran down.
We don't like people
who try to murder police,
but my boss is a very nice man.
What does he want?
He wants to know why
Emile Klein hanged himself.
He wants the truth,
or this and your car
will go to the lab,
and you'll be charged
with attempted murder.
[music continues]
[LaPointe]
Prison visiting rooms.
Not a great place for a kid.
[music ends]
[door opens]
You okay?
[Louise] I'm okay.
I'm worried about you.
Sweetheart--
Someone tried to kill you,
and you know who it is,
but you don't arrest him.
You just use it as leverage.
Is that normal police procedure?
Not exactly, but--
And if it comes out,
which it could,
would you be in trouble?
Probably.
Especially with Inspector Cavre,
who is not your friend,
sniffing around.
Yes.
So you could lose your job.
- I--
- And you know what?
I wouldn't mind.
[soft music plays]
When Guichard said I should
take you to the country,
to Saint-Fiacre,
it was like a new world
opened up,
a new life.
- You're serious?
- Why not?
You could ask Maurice
for your father's old job,
live in your old house.
I just know that out there,
away from all this madness
and noise,
we stand a much better chance
of having what
we both want so badly.
- Children.
- A child.
Even one.
[knocking]
Sorry to interrupt.
LaPointe called.
Genevieve and Van Damme will
meet you at her office
in 20 minutes.
- Will you drive me?
- Of course.
[music fades]
[door shuts]
- Moers.
- Oh.
Adeline Jeunet's phone
just recovered from the Seine.
Your manners
are as bad as Maigret's.
Anyway, dozens of TikTokers
drop their phones
into the Seine every day.
- How do you know it's hers?
- Same color case.
We need her call log,
photos, search history.
You do know the chances
of getting data off a phone
that's been in nearly ten meters
of water for 48 hours--
Are slim, yes,
but it has been done.
I know you weren't
much help with the suit.
I hope you can do better
with this.
Maigret likes working with you.
[dramatic music playing]
[Lucas] Boss.
[music fades]
Madame Belvoir,
this is Chief Inspector Maigret.
Is Claude Van Damme on his way?
You just got me, I'm afraid.
That's not what we agreed.
I phoned
the public prosecutor's office
and found there
is no investigation.
So in what capacity
are you actually here?
There will be an investigation
if we arrest Van Damme
for attempted murder.
But you haven't arrested him,
so in what capacity
are you here?
Honestly,
I don't know in what capacity.
We just want to know
about Emile Klein.
If I tell you,
will you leave us alone?
Will it explain
why Adeline died?
It will.
[Moers]
So, I've removed the cover,
battery, lenses,
leaving just the logic board.
[groans] It's only been
in water 48 hours,
but there's already corrosion.
It's an old phone.
The seals were weak.
[Janvier]
What does all that mean?
Can you get her data off it?
Corrosion is caused
by electrochemical migration.
Metal ions on the anode
combine with hydroxide ions
produced by water electrolysis
and spread towards the cathode.
When they get there,
they cause a short circuit,
or multiple short circuits,
which stop the board
from working.
Can you fix it?
Wonderful. Another scientist.
- Can you fix it?
- No.
Then why are we here?
I can't fix the phone,
but I can try
a chip-off analysis.
You mean remove the memory chip?
Correct.
[Genevieve] We were friends,
Claude, Adeline, and I.
We were all scientists.
Adeline was a biologist.
I was studying astronomy,
Claude medicine.
Emile worked
in the same lab as Adeline.
He was charming, funny, fun.
They became lovers.
She brought him into the group.
Did you join Adeline
on her environmental protests?
We did some marches,
a sit-in or two,
but it was more parties
than protests.
In our final year,
we pulled back.
We had exams to worry about,
and that was hard for Emile.
The group was everything to him.
He and Adeline broke up.
That sent him over the edge.
She dumped him,
so he hanged himself.
Not just that.
He was high all the time,
not coming into work.
Eventually,
the university fired him.
He was lost.
After he killed himself,
what happened?
We fell apart.
Claude failed his exams.
Adeline dropped out completely
and just disappeared.
We heard nothing
from her for ten years.
[Lucas]
Till the blackmail started.
Why did she wait ten years?
I have no idea.
Perhaps because she saw this.
[soft music plays]
Where are they now?
They must've interviewed you
to find out about your good job
at the Banque de Vincent,
your husband,
and two lovely children.
Emile Klein's in the photo, too.
You didn't identify him.
None of you did.
Your friend, Emile.
Because we didn't want to remind
ourselves of that terrible time.
It was a mistake, I know.
But because it made
Adeline angry.
She saw the nice lives you had,
and that you denied
Emile's existence.
That's why she came after you.
She wanted us to suffer,
and she did that by taking
all the money we'd made.
She said it was money
that Emile would never earn.
She ruined our lives.
Claude's medical business
is basically bankrupt.
You seem to be doing all right.
[chuckles]
Am I?
Yesterday was my last day here.
I've been let go
for borrowing money
from a client account
just to pay Adeline.
Do you know why she made
that stupid bomb threat?
Because we said enough.
We wouldn't pay any more.
[Adeline] Don't hang up.
Don't you dare.
Her last call was to you.
She was raging.
She said she'd tell
everyone everything.
I said I didn't care.
I told her to do her worst,
and she did.
And now the last image
I'll have of my friend
is of her putting a gun
to her head.
I did that.
So did you.
My family.
I've told you everything I know,
so if you'll excuse me.
Hi, boys.
You been good for Daddy?
The NAND chip is soldered
to the board,
so I need to melt
the solder with the heat gun.
[soft music continues]
[Moers] And once
the solder is melted,
I can lift the chip,
turn it, and clean off
the old solder.
[Lucas] Why didn't you ask
about the suit
and the blood on the suit?
Oh, because I didn't want to
hear another lie.
They let themselves
be blackmailed
for a quarter of a million
because Klein hanged himself,
an event which was investigated
and reported on at the time.
No.
There's something else.
Blood on the suit.
Find out if their protests
were as innocent as she claims.
Check on suicides
and suspicious deaths
connected to protests,
sit-ins,
break-ins at oil companies,
chemical companies,
government labs
in the Paris area.
Boss, those parameters
are a bit wide.
Yeah, in the six months
leading up to Klein's death.
[sighs] Okay, got it.
What are you going to do?
Go home,
pray that Moers gets
something off Adeline's phone.
At least the phone won't lie.
Lift the clean chip
and place it
in the chip reader.
Now to see if this has been
a complete waste of time.
[soft music plays]
Here goes.
A directory.
Nope, you're out of luck.
No call or internet history,
just a lot of video files.
So let's see them.
[beeping]
[Moers] Nothing there.
Data's corrupted, which,
as I told you, was most--
Try the next one.
[beeping]
[beeping]
[music intensifies]
[Adeline]
How can you be so cruel?
[gun shot]
[beeping]
[beeping]
[beeping]
[beeping]
[beeping]
- [beeping]
- [Janvier sighs]
[beeping]
[Moers] Well, well, well.
[Janvier] That's all
we could get, 51 seconds.
- That's Claude Van Damme.
- [Genevieve] Hey, Claude.
[Janvier]
And Genevieve Belvoir.
And Emile Klein, in his suit.
Guys, we have a job to do.
Come on.
Who's filming this?
My God, that's Adeline.
[laughs]
[Lucas] Is that it?
Just 20 more seconds.
[Emile] Louis, my man.
- Christ, how many are you?
- [Emile] Just us.
Hope you turned the CCTV off.
Yeah.
Hey, don't bloody film me.
[Janvier] That's it.
Maybe there are more films
that can be rebuilt,
but for now
Uh, what was that logo
in the foyer again?
Uh, BSI,
Berlinger Systems International.
Moers says it's
a government testing company.
That lab was closed down
eight years ago.
BSI came up
in my search earlier.
21st of October, 2016,
a security guard,
name of Louis Mortier,
killed himself
at a BSI lab in Barbizon.
[LaPointe] Same guy.
What'd you know about him?
[Lucas] Uh, he was 42,
lived alone,
had a serious gambling problem,
lots of debts.
[Janvier]
How did he kill himself?
[Lucas] Gunshot to the head.
His own gun.
Suicide, just like Klein
and Adeline.
[knocking]
What we don't know is
how or even if Adeline
and her friends
witnessed Mortier's death.
First thing tomorrow, get hold
of the crime scene report.
- Is there a date on the film?
- [Janvier] Boss.
[dramatic music plays]
Can I have a word,
Chief Inspector?
[Maigret clears throat]
I was worried about you.
I wanted to see how you were.
Thank you.
I'm okay.
Cracked ribs, I heard. Painful.
Perhaps you better say
what you want to say.
I know you don't work for me,
but you do work
for Director Guichard.
He told you to drop this case.
Why haven't you?
I don't like
an incomplete picture.
Really?
An incomplete picture?
You know,
I was told something recently,
that I've been
too supportive of you,
giving you too much rope.
Yeah? Who told you that?
That I've encouraged you
to believe
that you can do
whatever you want.
- But I don't believe that.
- Look at what you're doing.
Ignoring a direct order,
compromising your entire team.
You might not
care about your career;
don't you care about theirs?
- I didn't force them to be here.
- No?
You knew you just had to ask
Did you ever wonder
why Torrance left?
Was it because he
was an older man with a family,
and he was afraid that one day
he might disappoint you?
[soft music playing]
You always mean well, Maigret,
but you--
No.
No, I now know about
not one, but three deaths.
Three ugly, violent,
self-inflicted deaths.
Now,
if I can't investigate them,
then the law is a joke.
And as I've said to you
once before in this apartment,
how can you, as a prosecutor,
tell me not to?
I can't.
But be careful.
You cross too many lines.
People are waiting
for you to fail.
[music continues]
[exhales deeply]
We heard.
So, before you tell us again
that we are risking our careers
and we don't have to stay
There is a date
on Adeline's phone,
21st October 2016,
the night Mortier died.
They were all there.
[Lucas] We're staying.
Okay.
This is what we do.
[music fades]
[dramatic music playing]
[grunts]
[music intensifies]
[Maigret]
I'm sorry about the usher.
We'll go inside.
Ten years ago,
on the night
of the 21st of October 2016,
the two of you,
together with Adeline Jeunet
and Emile Klein,
broke into this laboratory.
I've never
seen this place before.
[Janvier]
Before you say anything else,
watch the film we got
off Adeline's phone.
- [Janvier] That's you, Claude.
- [Genevieve] Hey, Claude.
[Janvier]
And that's you, Genevieve.
And that is Emile Klein.
Okay. Yes, that's Emile.
I already told you
we're friends with Emile.
[Maigret]
We're not here for Emile.
[Emile] Louis, my man.
[Louis] Christ.
How many are you?
[Emile] Just us.
Hope you turned the CCTV off.
[Louis] Yeah.
Hey, don't bloody film--
[dramatic music plays]
Louis Mortier.
He's why we're here.
This is where you met
the security guard,
Louis Mortier.
Then you went into this room.
[music continues]
The animal lab was your target.
You were going to open the cages
and release the animals.
[music intensifies]
[Adeline] There's so many.
You don't know any of this.
You can't even prove
we came in here.
- If you had film, you'd show it.
- We don't have film.
We have photos.
This is the lab on the morning
of the 22nd of October, 2016.
You can see the cages
and the animals still in them.
And then there's this.
[Maigret] Louis Mortier.
One minute he's alive,
next minute he's dead.
How?
You're right, we don't know.
This is your last chance
to tell us.
Or what?
[Lucas] Or Adeline's film goes
to the detective
investigating Mortier's death,
and the coroner
who said it was a suicide.
Okay. Yes!
Yes. That was the plan.
We were going to release
the animals.
Emile had worked at BSI.
He knew Mortier,
and he bribed him to let us in.
But when we got here,
Mortier suddenly demanded
ten times the money.
[music intensifies]
I don't like this.
I want more money.
We already paid you 500.
Now I want 5,000.
I didn't know
there'd be so many of you.
Pay up, or I'll call the police.
No, we had a deal.
It changed.
You let us in here, man.
If you call the cops,
we'll drop you in it, too.
Don't you threaten me.
[Genevieve]
He pulled his gun on us.
That was bad,
and then it got worse.
Emile was coked out of his head.
Okay. Okay.
We're going.
- We're going.
- We're leaving.
Take it easy.
- No. No, no.
- I hate you.
We had a deal.
What are you doing?
[indistinct arguing]
Do you understand me?
[arguing continues]
[gun shot]
[gasps]
[groaning]
[Genevieve] The gun went off.
Emile tried
to stop the bleeding,
but there was nothing
he could do.
Mortier was already dead.
And that was it.
So you decided to leave
and just what?
Pretend nothing had happened?
That was on me.
I said that it was an accident,
and, yes,
we had to pretend nothing
had happened.
We're sorry.
We've been sorry for ten years.
So because of this accident,
both Adeline and Klein
killed themselves.
Look, I said we're sorry.
You know everything.
Please, just tell us
what you're going to do.
But I don't know everything.
Before Adeline shot herself,
she said,
"Now you'll know
what it feels like."
It's like she was handing me
her guilt,
but also her responsibility.
It was an accident.
If anyone was responsible,
it was poor Emile.
He's paid his debt.
The gun went off.
The bullet entered
Mortier's head here,
and exited here.
So he wasn't dead.
Mortally wounded, but not dead.
[soft music playing]
You've been very quiet,
Claude Van Damme.
You were studying
to be a doctor.
Emile tried to help Mortier.
He had his blood
and brains all over his suit.
What did you do?
Did you try and save his life?
- Did you?
- Claude, don't say anything.
Did you?
There was no point.
He was dying.
An ambulance wouldn't
have arrived in time.
[Louis gasping, groaning]
[Adeline] He's still alive.
We have to help him.
I'll call an ambulance.
No, don't.
Claude, please, do something.
I did the opposite
of trying to save his life.
I helped him die.
[music continues]
There's nothing we can do.
[groaning, moaning]
[Claude] I told myself
I was putting him
out of his agony.
But really,
I was protecting my friends.
I was protecting myself.
That's why I sell
medical equipment.
I knew I would never
become a doctor.
[exhales]
Now you know what it feels like.
I've lived with that
for ten years.
Not anymore.
Do what you want.
[music fades]
Shall I take you home?
You wait here a minute.
- Good detective work.
- Yep.
- You arrest them?
- No.
Why on earth not?
I know all about Louis Mortier.
You must have found some proof
that they were there
when he died.
At the very least,
they conspired
to conceal the crime.
You have to arrest them.
Klein paid the price
for Mortier,
and Adeline paid it for Klein.
Those two will pay
the price forever.
Do you want to
destroy their lives, too?
You're not a judge, Maigret.
You don't get to decide
a case like this.
There is no case, remember.
Just me and my team
following up a few leads.
And your team,
they just accept this, do they?
Well, they came to their own
conclusions.
You want to come
to a different conclusion,
that's up to you.
Do you want me to arrest them?
Doesn't matter what I want.
Just do what you think is right,
Justin.
It's what I try to do.
What you do
is not right.
[soft music plays]
- [door shuts]
- [music fades]
Good timing.
Chicken with tarragon
and asparagus tips.
Nice. Starving.
- Did you get your confession?
- Yes.
And did you absolve them?
Not my job,
but I did let them go.
- Why?
- Well, they've paid.
They'll go on paying.
[groans] God, my ribs.
Oh, dear. You'll go on paying,
too, for a while.
Have you absolved yourself?
[exhales] Not quite.
Perhaps as I get older,
I won't care as much
or resist authority.
Experience will deaden reality.
I will become stolid, inured.
And if you don't?
There's what you said.
Country air, Saint-Fiacre.
[knocking]
Mm, who is it now?
[door opens]
[Maigret] Oh, God.
Not quite.
[door shuts]
- Moers.
- Louise.
I apologize for interrupting
what smells like a really--
No, you cannot stay for dinner.
What do you want?
For the sake of completeness,
I checked every single one
of Adeline's files.
I found absolutely nothing
except one more
fragment of film.
Rather sad,
if you're the sentimental type,
which of course I'm not.
I'll leave it here.
Something to watch
after your dinner.
Just play it.
[Adeline] Birthday tomorrow.
But instead of just sending you
a card, I thought,
I know I have disappointed you
with the choices I've made,
but I want you to know
that I have done
some good things
to make up for the bad.
[soft music plays]
I know you only wanted
the best for me.
[laughs] When I think of you,
I have so many happy memories,
like waiting at the school gates
when I was five.
The joy in your face
when you saw me,
and the explosion
of love I felt in my heart.
I miss you.
Happy birthday, Mama.
You could give it to her mother.
[Moers] Would her mother
want to see this?
[crying] It's fine.
It's nothing.
Moers, please stay for dinner.
No, but thank you.
Good night.
[music fades]
Did you know
that Maigret continued
to investigate
the Adeline Jeunet case?
Really?
Well, he works for you, not me.
He continued to work
the case but made no arrests,
which either means there
was no case to answer,
or he decided to become judge,
jury, and executioner.
What do you think about that?
If it happened,
it's not correct.
Not correct? [laughs]
I thought you would
say positively dangerous.
A detective who
thinks he's beyond the law.
The IDDS were investigating him.
What do they say?
They were only investigating
the events lea
ding up to the suicide.
And what did they find?
That in the circumstances,
Maigret's decisions
and actions were
reasonable.
Well, that's good, isn't it?
Given that you promoted him.
Inspector George Bonfils did,
however,
note the extreme loyalty
that Maigret inspires in people.
What do you think about that,
Maigret inspiring
extreme loyalty?
I don't think anything.
He works for you, not me.
I'm thinking about
breaking up his team.
I think he needs to be
taken down a peg.
What do you think?
As I keep saying,
he works for you, not me.
Yes. That's right.
So stop enabling him.
Bye, Mathilde.
[door opens]
[door shuts]
[Lucas] Madame Jeunet.
We have something to show you,
part of a film
your daughter made.
[Adeline] Birthday tomorrow,
but instead of just
sending you a card, I thought
I know I have disappointed
you with the choices I've made,
but I want you to know
that I have done some good
things to make up for the bad.
I know you only wanted
the best for me.
When I think of you,
I have so many happy memories,
like waiting at the school gates
when I was five.
The joy in your face
when you saw me,
and the explosion
of love I felt in my heart.
I miss you.
Happy birthday, Mama.
[Lucas] I'm afraid
that's all there is.
We have to talk too about some
money Adeline had.
It's quite a lot of money.
[crying] Can I watch it again?
[Adeline] Birthday tomorrow,
but instead of just
sending you a card, I thought
So her mother
did want to see it.
I wondered if the pain
of losing a child
would outweigh
the joy of having them.
Now I don't think so.
[Adeline] I know you
only wanted the best for me.
We will try again, won't we?
We will.
[soft music playing]
You did good, all of you.
You gave her back her daughter.
I'm proud of you, Maigret.
[Adeline] I miss you.
[Adeline] Happy birthday, Mama.
[theme music playing]
[music fades]
