A New Beginning

- (SOFT PIANO MUSIC)
- Dear Grace,
soon, I will set off
to see you in London.
Ever since we were young and separated
in different orphanages,
I wanted to be there for you.
Now I know exactly where you are,
and no ocean will keep me
from being by your side
in your hour of need.
As I prepare to leave,
I do worry about the children here.
Especially Charlotte,
who as I wrote to you before,
lost her eyesight
after her parents died.
But I am certain the children
will be in good hands
when Eleanor arrives.
You asked about your friends
and family here in Brookfield.
Maggie continues to be an
important part of the community.
And she and Sam have
grown closer as friends.
But, of course, Sam's prospecting
takes him away for months at a time.
Tess is still hurt that
Chuck followed you to London.
She won't admit it,
but she's worried about you
and her soon-to-be grandchild.
Ronnie hasn't changed.
Lovable despite his poor
judgement and inflated ego.
And Gabriel, the love of my life,
remains away on a Mountie mission.
I fear for his safety.
I sent word letting him know
that I'm leaving for London.
I have not heard back.
I dearly hope to see him
before my journey to you.
All my love, Lillian.
O'Leary's gang took the high
ground the last couple of times,
so I'm gonna have
Mounties stationed along
this pass here and here.
The thing about O'Leary
is that he changes
his gunrunning routes.
So, you might wanna station some
Mounties right here, as well.
The other side of the river?
Water's shallow there,
so he'd have no problem
getting his wagons across.
I see why you were originally
assigned to lead this operation.
Still wish I was part of it.
You might be if you weren't
always living up to your nickname.
I appreciate you taking over
when I was put on medical leave.
I appreciate you taking
over my post in Brookfield.
(GENTLE MUSIC)
I need you to give Lilian this letter.
Consider it done.
Take care of the town.
I will.
You take care of yourself.
You're the one going head-to-head
with the O'Leary gang.
Wish it was me.
You'll be back leading
the charge in no time.

So what takes you all to Brookfield?
We're visiting my daughter, Maggie.
Maggie, she's lovely.
- Do you live there?
- I'm going back.
I used to work for a young
woman who runs an orphanage.
Now I just go back and
work whenever she needs me.
- Is that Lillian?
- Lillian Walsh?
You've both heard about her?
She's good friends with our daughter.
Oh, well, how do you know about her?
I don't. I have some
personal business with her.
Oh.
(CHUCKLING)
(HORSES WHINNY)
- Is London far?
- It is.
How are you going to get there?
On a big boat.
- (TOWN DIN)
- I'm gonna miss you
I'm gonna miss all of you,
but I don't leave for about a week
and you are going to be very
well taken care of while I'm gone.
- (JOYFUL MUSIC)

(HORSES SNORT)
There they are.
(LAUGHING): Oh. Oh, Lillian!
(LAUGHING)
Oh!
You remember Ruby and Charlotte?
I most certainly do.
I've been praying for
Charlotte to recover her sight.
(SQUEALING): Mom, so great to see you!
You're looking well.
And, hi, Dad!
How's my pumpkin?
Oh, there was a woman on the stagecoach
who says she has some
personal business with you?
Oh? Uh, who?
I don't see her now
Did she say what personal business?
No.
That's odd.
(SIGHING)
(MYSTERIOUS MUSIC)
(WOMAN): She's a beauty.
(WOMAN #2): She sure is.
Still a little skittish though.
Yeah. I think I'm gonna
take her into town tomorrow.
It'll be good for her to
start getting used to people.
Mm-hmm.
Let's make sure they're in
the barn before nightfall, huh?
- It can get nippy.
- Of course.
Oh, baby. Aw.
Where's Miss Eleanor staying?
- In grace's old room.
- Okay!
I can't thank you enough for coming.
Oh, I'm happy to help.
Is there any more news about Grace?
Uh, she's been ordered to remain in bed.
Pregnancy complications can be tricky.
(MUTTERING): Yeah
What did Gabriel say
when you told him you
were going to London?
He's away on Mountie business.
When will he be back?
Not for a while.
His temporary replacement's
due any day now.
So, he doesn't know you're going?
Well, I sent him a telegram,
but I haven't heard back.
I'm sure he'll understand.
Grace needs you.
- The children need me too.
- I'll take good care of them.
I know.

- Hi, everyone.
- Oh, who's this?
- My name's Wally.
Hi, Wally!

- Oh.
Miss Lillian, I just
asked Ruby and Charlotte
to wash their hands upstairs.
And I got the boys to clean their room.
Annie, you are almost a young woman!
Annie's so responsible now,
I leave her in charge when I go out.
But guess what?
The kitchen pump's leaking again.
Oh, I'll take a look at it.
I learned a new chord. (STRUMMING)

Okay, I'll help.
Can you please read us
a story after dinner?
Please, Miss Lillian.

Probably just a day.
Alright, just put your Jane
Hancock right there for me,
if you would. Thank you.
We'll have you in room two.
Can you tell me how to
get to the orphanage?
Oh, absolutely. Just make a right
outside the hotel and keep walking.
You cannot miss it.

new Mountie is coming?
Yeah, yeah. He arrived this morning.

time to learn the name
of every Mountie who rolls through town.

before you crossing the street?
- Do you know who that is?
- I told you, I didn't get his name!
(MAN): They call him Fearless Fletcher.
- (GRUNTING)
- Are you alright?
I'll be fine.
I'm a nurse. Let
me let me have a look.
What's he doing here?
Well, obviously, he's filling
in 'till Gabriel gets back.
Well, he's not normally a Constable.
He's known for hunting down
people who've evaded the law.
(GULPING): You don't say?
(CALMING MUSIC)
Let me see you bend it?
Just a little sore
from an injury I suffered.
Yeah, I can see the scars.
Those are from different injuries.

(GENTLE PIANO MUSIC)
(LILLIAN): Fear and
uncertainty can be paralyzing.
And on this night, the family
was in the middle of the ocean,
clinging onto what
was left of their boat.
The stars were twinkling,
but the water was ice cold.
Becky and Timmy could tell
that even Dad was scared.
And he was the bravest
person that they knew.
But Mom refused to lose hope.
She asked everyone to
hold hands and to pray
as hard as they could for a miracle.
So they closed their eyes
and they prayed for a long while.
The only sound they heard
was the water lapping up against them.
Finally, the family opened
their eyes and their hearts sank.
Timmy whimpered and Becky cried.
They're not saved?
What kind of story is that?
Do you want me to stop reading?
No! Please, don't stop.
Yeah, keep going.
Okay.
All they could see
were the twinkling stars
in the night sky.
Suddenly, Dad shouted,
"Look!" And he pointed to the horizon.
One of the starts twinkled
more brightly than the rest
and it was moving in their direction.
It turns out, it was another boat
and it was coming to save them.
(CHILDREN): Yay!
It was a miracle just like
their mom had promised.
And from that day forward,
Becky and Timmy never
stopped believing in miracles.

Whoa, that was close.
I believe in miracles.

What's going on?
I I knew your mother.
Ethel Bennett from Culpepper.
My birth mother?
That's me. She was my sister.
Lillian you're my niece.
I I didn't know I had an aunt.
Or an uncle.
And I never knew I had any nieces.
How could you not know?
My parents forbid your mother
from marrying your father.
After she did,
I'd never seen my father
more angry and hurt.
We moved to San Francisco.
I'm 11 years younger than her.
She would write to us.
Asking us to write back,
but my parents refused.
I was afraid to go against their wishes,
but I sneak in a few letters.
After a while, the
letters were less frequent
and then they stopped.
My parents found out a few years later
that Ethel and her husband
died of Tuberculosis.
(SIGHING)
How is it possible
that they didn't know
they had grandchildren?
My parents found out about
Ethel's passing second hand.
And they never went back to Culpepper.
And I found out by chance.
How did you?
I'm a lawyer.
A month ago, I left my practice
in San Francisco and
I moved to Clearwater.
I wanted to know where Ethel was buried,
so I hired a private investigator.
And he found out about you and Grace.
Is she in London?
Yeah I'm headed to
see her in a few days.
Um, to help her.
She's
she's having a difficult pregnancy.
You're a good sister.

what are you plans?

to real civilization.
Are you planning to
return to England soon?
No immediate plans.
I thought you'd outgrow
your wanderlust by now.
(CHUCKLES)
Still growing, I guess.
You've been in this town a while now.
What makes it so special?
I feel like I'm a

They've even appointed
me to the town council.
People always seem to gravitate to you.
What's going on, Miss Lillian?
Um
I just learned something I'd
like to share with you all.
(ELEANOR): What is it?
Nora is my aunt.
Your aunt?
Her birth mother was my older sister.
My mother's family apparently
didn't know about Grace and me.
To my great shame.
So you weren't an orphan
like the rest of us?
No, I still was.
Then why didn't they come and get you?
Yeah, that was mean of them.
We didn't know
I just recently found out.
What are the chances,
after all these years?
- It's a miracle.
- It is.
Just like the story you read.
I think we need to give
Miss Lillian some space.

- You just found out.
- Still
It's to be expected. You
have to let it sink in.
(SIGHING)
From what I remember of my mom,
Nora does remind me of her.
Isn't that something?
My mother wanted to
be close to her family
and they rejected her.
Even Nora.
Nora must've been a child at the time.
She's not to blame.
I suppose.
Marrying my father made my
mother an orphan, of sorts.
Your mother had her husband.
Imagined how much she loved him.
And then she had you and Grace,
so when she passed,
she had her closest family around her.

Sugar!
What happened?
She's gone. Saddle up.
(PEACEFUL MUSIC)
Oh, you're busy. I'll come back later.
No, no. Just the man I
wanna see. Have a seat.
Oh. Already? This one?
Mm-hmm.
(GRUNTING)
Tidying up?
I'm a big believer in order.
Both in town and in my jail cells.
Yeah, order is good.
Glad we're of like mind.
You know, without order, there's chaos.
Chaos is like snowball
going down a hill.
Just gets bigger and
bigger until it crushes
everything in it's path.
That's why, when there's
any hint of disorder,
I have to stomp it out. Understand?
Okay! I confess.
Confess to what, exactly?
I've learned the hard way
that there's two kinds
of women in this world.
The kind that'd ask you
to steal a Mountie's hat
and the kind that wouldn't.
Unfortunately, I fell
in love with the former.
You stole a Mountie's hat?
But I did it for love.
Love?
I thought it was mutual.
Turns out, all she was
interested in was the hat.
(EXHALES)
The statute of limitations
has run out on all hat crimes.
- Really?
- Mm-hmm.
In fact, I think you can
be a real asset to me.
Huh, how so?
People congregate in your restaurant
and you seem to have a
good grasp on the townsfolk.
Right. Yeah, nothing happens around here
without me knowing about it.
If you ever hear of
anything I should know
I'd appreciate you telling me.
Woah, I'd be like a deputy?
More like a concerned citizen.
Good. Yeah, we'll work
together to make this town safe.
- Sounds like a plan.
- Alrighty.
- Mm-hmm.
- I'll just yeah. Partner.
- Keep up the good work.
- (LAUGHING)
Hey, hey, I heard the
Mountie was looking for you.
- Oh.
- What'd he want?
Well, let's just say that
Fearless Fletcher has
a new sidekick in town.
(SIGHING)
(HORSE SNORTING)
(MYSTERIOUS MUSIC)
Do you see anything?
Wolf tracks.
One?
No. A whole pack.
Ah, you look a little more relaxed.
Yeah, doesn't take
long to get reacquainted
with creature comforts.
I bet.
Sam cleans up rather
well, don't you think?
I'm thinking that
that prospector is no prospect
for our wonderful daughter.
So how have you been
off in those mountains?
Cold.
I bet.
I wanna talk to you about something.
Okay.
Maggie. Hey Sam.
I got an order of tinctures for you.
- Oh, right, um
We'll talk later, okay?
Sure.
Sam.
You needn't worry.
Maggie says that Sam
isn't interested in her.
That's not what I see.
What are you thinking, Nigel?
We need to get Maggie out of this town.
And I know just how to do it.
(SLURPS TEA)
(PEACEFUL MUSIC)
Let me give you a hand.
Oh, I don't want to trouble you.
No trouble.
I, uh actually like folding.
It clears my mind.
You have so much going on. (SIGHING)
The last thing you need
is someone showing up
on your doorstep.
Sometimes you don't know
what you need until it
shows up on your doorstep.
What do you mean?
You're my aunt.
I have family.
Coming from where I've been, that is
it's pretty special.
Can I tell you something about
your mother and my sister?
Please.
I remember her talking
about wanting two girls.
Girls that would grow up
and look out for each other.
She said that?
You and Grace were her dream come true.
And I know that she's
looking down from heaven,
so proud of what you're
doing and how you turned out.
(SIGHS)
I I wish you were
staying a little longer.
Just until I left for London.
Do you mean that?
Absolutely.
But, um
I know you have to go meet
with your prospective clients.
Clients come and go.
Family is forever.
(SENTIMENTAL MUSIC)
What are you saying?
I'm saying that I
would love nothing more
than to spend more time with you.
(LILLIAN CHUCKLES)
I have an aunt.
And I have two nieces.
