Odwilz (2022) s02e04 Episode Script

Season 2, Episode 4

[boat horn blaring]
[tense music playing]
So, what I found out so far
is that there were a few
points of origin of the fire,
and after the first exam, we know
that it was arson, not an accident.
Five boats were on fire.
We don't know about the CCTV yet.
It could have gotten destroyed.
-Maybe it was the Lanskis.
-And the Galewskis?
They're inside right now.
They're both in shock.
[sighs]
Hey, Kasia, have you slept at all?
[melancholy music playing]
[Elzbieta] Stanislaw, just stop.
There she is.
Kasia, leave us alone.
Tell me, how is it that,
when you show up,
everything goes to shit?
Huh?
You talk to my son, and what happens?
You were here, then it burns.
Yes, I know.
Maybe you can help, Ela.
How'd this happen?
Well, don't you see?
He's obviously toying with us.
I'm sorry.
You're sorry?
-My boy died, and it's your fault.
-All right, enough.
Look, I didn't come here
to make a social call.
I'm a police officer investigating
the murder of your son,
who also happened to be involved
in human trafficking, okay?
Stanislaw, come on.
We're leaving. Stanislaw!
-Enough, Ela. Stop it!
-Say something for once!
Why do I have to be alone in this?
The little fucks dragged him into it.
Sorry?
The little fucks probably dragged
him into it and then killed him.
-And they burned us down now too.
-Okay, listen.
I don't wanna hear
any more of your stories.
Proof against the Lanskis
is what I need.
If you have it, you better show it.
And if you don't,
then you need to keep
that theory to yourself.
[tense music playing]
-[theme music playing]

THE THAW
[door opens]
[Zawieja] Thankfully,
the hard drive survived the fire.
This is the footage
that we recovered from last night.
Unfortunately, the way the cameras
are set up
made it impossible to identify
the arsonist.
From what we can see,
the person looks like
a shipyard worker
or they're faking it.
Trepa, rewind to the beginning.
[Zawieja]
This person knows the area well.
For example, they knew exactly
where the flammable materials
are kept.
All right, so, we know that Galewskis
owed money to the Lanskis, right?
Maybe it's part of the ongoing
turf war between the two families?
But why would Lanski
set himself up like that?
He knows that we've been
watching him this whole time.
Maybe it was Galewski.
I mean, he could have started
the fire for the insurance money.
Yeah, we're on it, and we're also
obtaining the phone records
for the Lanskis and Galewskis.
Maybe it will shed some light
on both cases,
because so far, Zawieja,
you've been chasing your tail.
Thanks, everyone. Get to work.
Trepa, can we talk for a moment?
You can go.
-You two have been working a lot.
-Yeah.
How's she doing?
-With her daughter and father-in-law?
-The father-in-law's better.
Her mother's been around.
We've been making it work.
[Pietrzak]
After the whole club thing,
she has to pass a psych evaluation.
-She can't fucking fall apart again.
-What can I do?
She does whatever she wants.
Tell me if you notice anything
worrying, and I'll talk to her.
[melancholy music playing]
Just keep an eye on her.
Yeah, I will.
I always keep an eye on her.
-May I?
-Yeah.
I've gone through
Stanislaw Galewski's phone records.
And I've marked
all the recurring numbers.
Mm-hm
Thank you.
[sighs]
What did he want?
He's just worried about you.
I'm worried too.
Especially when you're driving around
a roundabout instead of coming home.
[sighs]
Here, look.
The number Galewski called
seven times the night of the murder.
And not just then. There's some more.
All right, I'll call the number then.
[line ringing]
[line beeps]
[on recording]
You've reached Maria Lanski.
-[whispers] Maria Lanski.
-I'm not able to come to the phone.
Call back later or leave a message.
[voicemail beeps]
[whistles]
Come on, then, Trepa.
[solemn music playing]
-[man] And this?
-You can put it wherever.
-[Zawieja] Hello.
-Hello.
Sorry about the mess here.
It was my husband's decision,
so it is what it is.
Hello again. How can we help you?
Uh, we were trying to get in touch
with your son, Pawel,
but he isn't answering his phone.
This is his registered address.
Yes, that's right, though
he isn't here right now.
Where is he?
He went to see Galewski's
burned-down place, right, Maria?
Oh, I'm not sure.
I'd actually like
to talk to you, Maria,
without your husband present,
if that's possible.
Remember, Maria,
you're allowed to say no to them.
[scoffs]
Especially on your birthday, no less.
[Trepa] How about this?
The women will go
and have a discussion in private.
And while they do,
I'm gonna ask you a few questions.
-I'm sorry about my husband.
-No, it's okay.
As you know, I'm trying to solve
the murder of Oliwier Galewski.
And it turns out the Galewskis
are blaming your family.
For their son's death,
as well as their whole store burning.
That's just not true, though.
For argument's sake,
I'll buy that for now.
However, I have a question.
When it comes to that family,
how close were you?
We weren't very close, uh
Well, except for once, Oliwier.
When my husband was in prison,
he had told me that his father
had a gift for fixing boats.
So that was when I decided I was
going to lend Galewski some money.
I handled it the way I would
my other business deals. That's it.
So he borrowed money
from you one time,
and now
your husband's angry about it?
No, I had to get my husband's
approval for that loan.
He approved it, and I gave it away.
[Lanski]
I can't say I excel at cooking,
but steaks are my specialty.
[clears throat] Like I said, Pawel
was supposed to go to the docks
to check up on our company
after that terrible fire.
[tense music playing]
I feel bad for Stanislaw.
He lost almost everything.
Just like Job, in a way.
Galewski owes you money, doesn't he?
Yeah, and?
You prick, you think because of that,
I went and burned down his business?
Hasn't the poor guy
suffered enough already?
-Really no need for such words.
-Who do you think we are?
Oh, your family's honest
and decent, right?
We have the phone records
of both companies,
and this number right here,
Stanislaw would call it pretty often.
It's your number, right?
Yes.
The night his son died,
there were a dozen or so calls.
So, what did you two discuss?
He had called me, drunk.
He wanted us to get back together.
-That's what it was.
-Yeah.
When Andrzej got out,
everything was different.
And now, as my beloved husband
would say, I must apologize,
but I'm not saying anything more
without a lawyer.
I'm sorry.
[dramatic music playing]
[sirens wailing in distance]
[phone ringing]
-Not gonna answer?
-No, not right now.
Fucking hell.
[phone ringing]
Hello.
Yes. She's right here.
[sighs]
Hello, Mom.
Yes, I know.
Hm
Yeah, all right.
Hm
Yes, I gotta go now.
All right. Bye.
-What did you do that for?
-One needs to talk to one's family.
-What's she want?
-Nothing.
She doesn't understand anything.
And she won't leave me alone.
[dramatic music continues playing]
[tools clanking]
-[Zawieja] Where's the shift manager?
-He's at Station 5.
[seagulls squawking]
[tools hammering
and whirring nearby]
All right, thanks.
[knocking]
Hi. Are we able to speak with you,
inside?
It's a little loud out here.
Uh They're police. Do you mind?
We came here after
speaking with the Lanskis.
So we've got a few questions.
Let's start with
Pawel and Oliwier's relationship.
Could you tell us
about it again, please?
[sighs] Well, they were Oliwier's
whole world, basically.
They were friends since grade school.
Pawel and Marek were always spoiled.
Always had money, new cars.
Recently, they bought Marek the club.
And what was your relationship
with the Lanskis?
Mine? There was none.
Besides the fact
that they lent me money.
We've looked at the phone records,
though, didn't we?
It turns out you talk
to one person often, Maria Lanski.
[tense music playing]
[Trepa] It's a bit strange.
Maria Lanski.
She admitted--
My wife can't find out about this.
[scoffs softly]
It was a stupid mistake,
and it's long over now.
You made a lot of calls to her
the night your son died.
I was drunk, okay?
I was drunk because I was upset.
I knew Oliwier
was getting into bad shit.
I called Maria because I wanted her
to help me maybe sort it all out.
[sighs] My problem here is
that both your families
are preventing the case
from being solved.
No one's telling the whole truth,
and Pawel is avoiding us.
You're not telling the truth
about Maria Lanski.
[Zawieja] And you're blaming
the fire on the Lanskis,
but you're unable
to provide any proof.
So then, what do we do about that?
Ela cannot find out about my affair,
all right?
I'm begging.
I'm not going to tell her about it.
We'll go to my place.
I'll show you something.
[dramatic music playing]
Uh, this footage was given
to us by Stanislaw Galewski.
He said that it was captured
a couple days ago
before his store
got burned to the ground.
They had a fight,
and Galewski gave us a statement.
He said Pawel was threatening him,
saying that if he tells anyone
about Lanski's business,
he'll end up like his son.
As far as we know, Pawel Lanski
recruited Oliwier Galewski
to put the container onto the ship.
The night Oliwier died, he called me
and confirmed the shipment.
A few hours later,
he was killed for revealing that.
You're saying he was killed
by Pawel Lanski?
[Zawieja]
Play the kebab footage again.
Pawel Lanski.
We haven't questioned him.
This footage shows he was one of
the last people to see Oliwier alive.
And he lied about that.
[Trepa]
When trying to reach Pawel Lanski,
we determined that tonight
there will be a birthday party
at their house for Maria Lanski.
And the whole family
is going to be there.
I want you to detain them
for 48 hours.
Question them at the station
so they aren't able to obstruct.
If we want to finally get them,
we need to have something solid.
If I may, I think we might
be acting prematurely.
I would advise
a bit more surveillance
of the Lanskis and Galewskis.
There's no more time.
The container with the women
hasn't been traced as of yet.
-And this is about people's lives.
-I completely agree with her.
We'll move forward as we agreed then.
[seagulls squawking]
I'm glad that you're here.
We have to go downstairs.
Here.
When I first saw this, I thought
that maybe I should call your father.
What else would I do? This way.
Hardly anybody ever comes in here.
I figured I would go and check up
on how things were, though.
Not expecting
Over on the left there.
[suspenseful music playing]
It's so damp that I certainly
wouldn't store anything down here.
-Which way?
-A bit further.
Over there.
Boss, what do we do?
[in frantic voice]
Let us out, please! You have to.
[woman breathing shakily
and continues knocking rapidly]
All right, Stan.
[exhales sharply]
You're gonna take your family
on vacation.
Your wife and kids.
Take some time off, okay?
[women sobbing]
I was never here.
[dramatic music playing]
[line ringing]
[Trepa] Everyone, listen up.
-[phone ringing and buzzing]
-We've got an arrest to make
at the Lanskis' house.
I'll see you downstairs
in 10 minutes.
[Zawieja] Fuck me.
She's going to drive me insane.
-Who is?
-My mom. She keeps calling.
Hania's final rehearsal
for the play is today.
-I can't do everything.
-So then leave.
Listen. To Hania,
this is important. Go.
-[sighs]
-Look, Kasia.
I promise you we'll be fine.
We'll make the arrest later.
We'll write out the receipts.
You won't miss anything important.
You'll come back when it's done.
You can do the questioning.
It's cool. Go.
Because family is?
At home. [scoffs]
[dramatic music playing]
[car engine starts]
[siren whooping]
[sirens wailing]
[Janek sighs]
How are you feeling?
[grunts]
A lot better. A lot better.
As soon as this case is done,
I'll renovate this room
and you'll move in.
No, I've decided that
[sighs]
A care home.
Come on. What care home?
-We can handle everything ourselves.
-Yeah, I know you can.
It's just that you, uh
You need, uh, to have
your own life as well. Really.
You should try to take better care
of Hania.
[sighs]
Don't make the same mistake I did.
I never spent enough time with him,
with Wojtek.
Nothing but cases, cases, cases.
-The child is what's important.
-Mm
-Remember that.
-Mm I know.
-Yeah.
-[Hania] Mom, I'm packed.
-Are we going?
-Yeah.
-Put your shoes on.
-Remember.
-Bye, Hania.
-[Hania] Bye.
The case is not important.
The child is, though.
Janek, I know.
Hania is all that matters.
-And, uh, about the old folks home--
-Care home, not old folks.
Uh-- Um
The care home, then.
We'll get back to that.
Bye.
Be honest, Mom.
Whose idea was the old folks home?
It was his. He's right, you know.
Everyone will be better off.
We'll see you later.
[door opens]
[melancholy music playing]
[woman] And one, two, three.
Turn. Good. Now one by one.
And one, two, three. And position.
And
One, two, three.
Start, start. And good.
[pensive music playing]
[dramatic music playing]
[Molski] You're lucky
the package turned up.
I'm sending my men there.
This doesn't concern you any longer.
-Then I'm assuming we're even.
-Yeah, fine.
I'm pleased with the way it all
turned out, to tell you the truth.
Yes, I agree.
Good.
[dial tone]
And I was about
to cut you down, Lanski.
-[cracking]
-[door opens]
[jazz music playing over speakers]
[indistinct chatter]
-[Pawel] Hi, how are you?
-Hi.
[Marek] Bro, hey.
Will you tell me
what the fuck is happening?
Stop. The cops are looking for you.
Mom's stressed out.
Galewski's store burned down.
Just calm down. We'll talk about it
later, because I need you.
Ah!
He's finally here. My eldest is here.
We can start.
Would you answer
your phone sometimes?
Gather around, everyone.
It's time for my speech.
I'm happy to see you all.
-[clinking]
-[music stops]
I just wanted to say a few words
about the lady of the hour.
My wonderful wife.
I know this is a difficult time,
but you only turn 50 once
in your lifetime, isn't that right?
My beautiful wife, everyone.
You've always been there for me.
Even in my darkest moments,
you didn't leave me
and you were faithful.
I'd like to drink to that
with all of you.
[guests singing]
Õ Happy birthday to you Õ
Õ Happy birthday to you Õ
-No.
-Õ Happy birthday, dear Maria Õ
Õ Happy birthday to you Õ
To the next 50 years
we'll spend together.
Maria, thank you.
-Thank you, honey.
-[Marek] Excuse me.
I'd like to make another toast
to our wonderful father.
You taught us how to manage
when you couldn't be there for us,
and you showed us
that the most important thing
in life is money, of course,
and that we shouldn't be afraid
to do shady things,
'cause sooner or later,
we'll all go to prison.
-Marek, watch it.
-Fuck, no.
Since you got out,
everything is fucked.
You're throwing Mom a party
as if everything is okay, though.
You didn't ask if it's something
she even wanted.
-Get out.
-Oliwier is dead.
It wasn't an accident.
Someone killed him. And now what?
Leave.
[glass shatters]
[sighs]
[Lanski] Sometimes I have to bear
the consequences of my mistakes.
I'm very sorry for that, everyone.
And I'd like to thank all of you
for accepting an invitation,
even if I haven't done great
at being a dad.
Oh, I don't think you
were all that bad, dear.
[Lanski chuckles]
[dramatic music playing]
[Maria] Let's serve
the champagne now.
-I wanted to say happy birthday.
-Thank you, sweetie.
How are you doing? Are you okay?
Looks like we have guests.
Fucking pigs.
Remember, you don't say
anything without a lawyer.
Good evening. Police.
Pardon the intrusion.
Sorry, everyone.
Andrzej Lanski, you're under arrest
on suspicion of human trafficking,
witness intimidation, and murder.
And the rest of you
are under arrest for collusion.
[Zawieja] Hania, go upstairs.
I'll park the car.
[inaudible dialogue]
I don't know if Molski's testing me
or he's just setting me up.
But I'm screwed.
The damage is done.
I need to risk it.
[sighs] Here's what we'll do.
If you're able to extract the girls,
you have to send us your location.
We'll put a police patrol en route.
As you pass by, we'll stop you.
It's only gonna look like
a routine stop.
Before that,
I'll get you protection
and state witness status
for Zofia and the kids.
-Uh-huh.
-You'll be able to testify safely.
So I'm gonna be locked up and this
fucker Molski is gonna walk free?
Who said that?
I won't drop this case.
The issue is that we've got nothing
on him.
What's important is the lives
of those women, yes or no?
Kasia, you're not gonna get
a state witness in three hours.
Screw it, though.
I'm ready to go when you are.
I won't authorize this operation
if I don't get one, all right?
[chuckles softly]
Well
-What?
-That wasn't the plan.
[groans softly]
Yeah, well, now it is.
[tense music playing]
-[officer 1] Hello, commissioner.
-Hello.
-What's your name?
-Andrzej Lanski.
[officer 2] Come with me.
Pietrzak,
I was just talking to Radwan.
He's got solid information about
the shipment of the girls, okay?
We need to call Budka.
I'm on my way to the station.
[door opens, then closes]
[Budka] So?
What's this urgent matter that I had
to come here late at night for?
we spoke with Andrzej Radwan.
[sighs] And what is it now?
[Pietrzak] He claims
that the container with the girls
has been found and he's the one
charged with handling it.
So, Radwan is still out there
working for Molski?
Radwan is acting on his own,
out of his own initiative.
I'm assuming I don't have to say
why he's doing it.
-Do you trust him?
-[Zawieja] Yes, I do.
He's a friend. I wouldn't lie to you.
Radwan will give us the route
if he gets state witness status.
Only then is he willing to testify.
The women
are to be transported tonight.
All right.
But I'll need more for the report.
Please.
Walk me through everything again.
[tense music playing]
[sighs]
[suspenseful music playing]
[man 1] Come on, move it.
Come on, let's go.
-[phone chimes]
-Come on, move it.
-[man 2] Radwan.
-[Radwan] Yeah?
There's a problem.
One of the girls might be gone.
-It's not my problem. Call Molski.
-[man 1] Hurry up.
-Let's go, let's go.
-All right, close it. I gotta go.
Get inside. Go.
[Zawieja] Trepa.
I got Radwan
the state witness status.
He found where the girls are,
and he wants to lead us to them.
You weren't there for Hania,
were you?
Come on. I was there for her, okay?
And afterwards, I met up with Radwan.
Well, congratulations.
Maybe we should drink.
To your fucking future partner.
Come on, what do you say?
What are you doing?
-Are you going through my stuff?
-Yes.
And what gives you the right?
I really thought we were a team.
But if we are,
what's your role in this team anyway?
Being constantly present in my life?
Or in my home, taking care of Hania.
Hania who just loves you,
almost like a father.
Are you a fucking saint? Always
cleaning up my goddamn mess for me?
You wanna be together?
You really wanna date me?
All right, then be my guest.
I mean, you haven't even
tried to fuck me yet.
-To fuck you? Wow
-Yeah, fuck me.
You've never thought about it, Trepa?
Am I interrupting?
No.
Okay, it's time to begin.
We'll question the Lanskis tomorrow.
Trepa, you'll watch the techs.
The evidence has to be conclusive.
-Zawieja, you're with Szymanski.
-Yeah.
The calvary's just arrived.
Tried to fuck you.
[line ringing]
Hello? Hi there.
Hania wants to talk to you.
Hold on a sec. Here you go.
[Janek moans]
Hi, Hania.
I'm guessing
you wanted to talk to Mom,
but she's busy at the moment.
She can't talk right now.
And I thought that by now,
you were already asleep in bed.
I will as soon as I finish
eating dinner.
We're having pancakes.
[Trepa] Okay, well, I hope they're
at least as good as Mom's.
Good evening.
Oh, yeah? That's awesome.
I'll talk to you later, okay?
Good night. I love you.
[chuckles]
-Yeah, all right. I love you too.
-[car engine starts]
[suspenseful music playing]
[siren wailing]
[phone ringing]
Radwan's calling.
[clears throat]
-[Radwan] Zawieja?
-Yeah. You good?
There's a problem.
The shipment left early.
I've got an escort, though.
A single car.
Radwan, stick with the plan.
Turn into Regional Road
number 111 in Goleniow.
At kilometer 10,
traffic police is gonna stop you.
-When can you be there?
-In 30 minutes.
We're about 40 kilometers away.
[Zawieja]
Okay, we should make it in time.
Radwan, don't worry. It's gonna work.
[suspenseful music continues playing]
I hope your friend is able to tell us
something that'll break my case open.
Otherwise, I'm starting the op
from scratch.
You'll be in a lot of trouble for it.
You won't have to.
Radwan has been working Molski
for long enough now.
He'll be able to help you out.
[sirens wailing]
[suspenseful music continues playing]
[tires screech]
What he fuck is he doing?
Open it, please.
[sirens wailing]
Call an ambulance.
Radwan. [breathing shakily]
No.
[whimpering softly]
Can you hear me? Stay with me.
Look at me. Look at me.
It's gonna be all right.
[soft dramatic music playing]
[sobbing softly]
[theme music playing]
