I'm the biggest
and I have the smallest car.
Everyone drives on gas and I'm EV.
Fully electric.

The thing about an electric motor
is that an electric motor is perfectly
designed to drive a car.
It's easier, cleaner,
simpler.
In a few years, our children
and grandchildren will say:
Did you guys use
ground-up dinosaurs as fuel?
We need to let technology
choose the best path.
I'm always trying to do something
I love
to do something
that's better for the environment.
To make season 2 even better,
I wanted to go off-grid.
See how long we could stay off-grid
by generating our own power.
And discover even more cool things.
I'm inspired
by many different companies.
Self-sufficient EVs
are very possible.
What's holding EV back is battery technology.
The money and investments
are now going into battery technology.
So the future is going to be a lot of fun.
I am fascinated by technology
and how we move through the world.
That was the motivation
behind this episode.
Made from recycled water bottles.

I lead a self-sufficient life
and I love being outside.
I want to keep it that way and try
to do something more sustainable.

I learned from season one
and the build of the Phantom
that I really enjoy
teasing Steve and Electrogenics
and making things extremely difficult
for them.
We had the first, the oldest,
one of the most difficult
and most complex e-cars
in the first season.
What we did in the first season with
Steve and Electrogenics was a wild idea.
To turn a 1920s Rolls-Royce
into an e-car.
The relationship with Jason developed.
We built the Phantom for him.
That was quite something.
No one in the world,
as far as we know
has ever brought about
such a complex transformation.
I wanted to push boundaries. What I had
learned and what the possibilities were
because it was a dream to make something like
that and go one step further each time.
You keep thinking: What can we do now?
And then he came back to us
with the idea
Why don't we take
100-year-old Harley-Davidsons
and turn them into hybrid vehicles?
He thinks: That would be great,
because it's a Harley.
That's his culture, his social
relations and that sort of thing.
And I'm sitting on the other side
of the conversation thinking:
Geez, that technology doesn't exist.
How do we do that?

It's a crazy idea.
What can we do and what can't we do?
Look at that wheel.

Yeah, good, right? This is the most
difficult project we've ever done.

You can't hide anything on a motorcycle.

start with the whole vehicle

of the EV system

How do we make this vehicle,

a military vehicle
or an old vehicle like this
and how do we bring out
the best in it?

We started with EV very early.
The big challenge was
how to get parts.

car manufacturers had only just started.

Because the demand for EVs
is increasing enormously
many manufacturers are producing
increasingly cool components.
Better motors, better batteries,
all kinds of other technologies
that we can integrate
into our systems.
Any engine can be electric now.
That's a crazy thought
and you guys
are working super hard to make it happen.

A team member spent 112 hours
on a copper skull
to replace the gear shift.
It is gorgeous.

For some products, we went back
to the original suppliers.
It's fun to tap into that heritage.
We respect the way
these cars were built.
The body is handcrafted.
The tires and wheels are original.
But they're also electric, so we
have to use modern technology.
It's tough to do both and keep
both the traditionalists
and the modern ambassadors happy.

While filming Chief of War,
I grew attached to the catamaran.
I first learned to sail
with the wind on a double-hull canoe.
On Instagram I saw solar panels
on the side of a catamaran.
I reached out
and started digging deeper.
That catamaran runs on solar power.
Sunreef created Solar Skin.
Oh, man.
Good, right? Oh, man. Look at that.
This shower is roomy, huh?
For big guys.
It's brand new, huh?

We're all just going
to live on a boat.

Sailing is wonderful.

Yeah, racing yachts in Poland.
I had never sailed
until I was in Hawaii.
There I was allowed to sail
with a double-hull canoe.
I'm 46 and I want to learn that.
I'm going to learn to sail.
Being able to travel from island to island.
That would be an amazing dream.
And if not,
I'll just keep daydreaming about it.
It would be amazing
to experience that.
The idea of exploring the world
with my kids or family.
Experiencing nature.
When you step onto it, everything falls away.
Away from everything.
I think it's really, really special.
That's why I'm here.
An electric motor, so it's quiet.
They invented those solar panels.
We're going to learn more about that.
They're even on the mast.

but to ride such an old motorcycle,
I had never experienced that.
The technology is there, but what holds you back is in your head.

of physics and engineering.
If you have an electric motor
how can you redefine
how you build a vehicle?
What actually is a vehicle?
These motorcycles have a hub motor.
That's very special.
A hub motor doesn't
need an engine compartment.
If you're open to it and can think:
A vehicle isn't something
with a big engine in the middle.
Just like with these motorcycles,
you can put the motor in the wheels
and then you can do all kinds of things.

You have an idea.
It takes two years. It's impossible.
And then you arrive and you think:
I've never ridden anything like this.
It's such a cool feeling. I've done so
much already and it's such a simple idea.
I think people think:
wow, it's accessible.
You take something that didn't work
or that is dear to you
and you just step on the gas.
It's that simple.
It's just so beautiful.
And it just has to ride smoothly.
That's how a Rolls-Royce should be.

Francis had a clear vision
of what he wanted to achieve and create.

He lives where the company builds everything.

One evening I was thinking
about the solar panel.
It was a dream in the night.
- Wow.
I said: I don't want a solar panel,
I just want to buy a small cell.
I started myself with one employee
to make the first prototype.
This is it. Wow.
My challenge is often
to come up with something new.
That's special about you and me.
I have to create, I have to do,
I have ideas, a vision.
And you live here,
that goes for me too.
I live at my work. I can work more,
so you have to find people like that
who follow you and make art.

All those things I'm curious about,
but also things I love.
I love those old motorcycles.
I don't always ride them,
but they all work.

The rest of the episode was about
testing four-wheel drive
in electric mode.
But we have to keep driving.
A self-sufficient EV
is very possible.
Jason said: Why don't you make a trailer
with a big EV battery in it?
That's really cool, because you can
charge the trailer with solar energy.
Then you tow the trailer's battery
to wherever it's needed.
Then you have mobile power supply.
We're collaborating
with a company here in the UK
that wants to bring power to parts of Ukraine
where the power grid is down.
This is now your gas station.
You can do so much with it.
Everything has to be self-sufficient.
And all based
on that charging station.
The idea was to build a base camp
and then see
how long we can stay.
A family vacation. You go
away for a weekend and take this with you.
Then you can do everything, have fun,
charge things, whatever you need.
And we need
a couple of heavy-duty DJ decks.
Then you've got everything, yeah.
And then the gas

and stay for a while,

We can stay charged
and keep playing.

and put it back in.
You unscrew and screw some parts.

It's very different to drive through the woods quietly with my daughter.
It is so beautiful.
It's a nice thought that we have contributed to this legacy.

And reintroduce the next generation
to these wonderful pieces of art.

instead of tearing right through it, which is also fun, but this is so different.
