The Buccaneers (2023) s02e05 Episode Script

A Whole Love

1
[pop music playing]
[chuckles]
[chuckles]
Did you eat it?
Your skirt? Possibly.
Well,
then I guess I'll just have to wear these.
[Theo chuckles]
[both chuckle]
[Lizzy sighs]
Stay another night.
Another week.
- Forever.
- I can't.
Don't go.
To my own wedding?
[Theo sighs]
I don't think you can go.
You're wearing my trousers.
Well, then I'll just take them off.
Is this, um… [chuckles] …dignified?
- Is it elegant? [chuckling]
- [chuckles]
I think I'm falling in love with you.
Sorry.
[sighs]
Don't marry him.
[Nan] Hello?
Hello?
[gasps]
[Lizzy] Nan.
[Nan] Hello?
Theo?
[Lizzy] Get my shoes…
Where do I go? Where do I go?
[whispers] Lizzy, hide.
[Nan] Theo?
[pants]
[clears throat]
Nan, what are you doing here?
I'm sorry. Um, no one was home.
Where is your mother and all the servants?
I gave them a few days off.
I've been camping out.
I just wanted to say I'm sorry
and I'm hoping…
If we're having this conversation,
I'd prefer to be dressed for it. Please.
I'm going to ask you to wait for me
at the castle.
You didn't send word. I'd prefer the
dignity of at least buttoning my shirt.
Of course.
[sniffling]
[sighs]
Lizzy.
Lizzy?
It's okay.
Lizzy.
Lizzy, wait.
["North American Scum" playing]
Do they not have sea in Italy?
I never should have married you.
We can agree on that.
And I am so sorry about everything.
About Guy.
I should never have come to that church.
You shouldn't have had to pay the price.
Also my mother gave you no choice.
She told you.
And now she's gone.
[inhales sharply]
I have a proposal.
You and I can never get divorced,
but Hector thinks
the bill will be passed this fall.
And so, until then I'd…
I'd like to stay here.
For us to publicly be a united front
so nothing can jeopardize Jinny's return.
And then when Jinny comes home,
legitimately,
I'll leave the castle for good.
I'll always be the duchess
for appearances,
but you and I can live our own lives.
I owe you that.
I never feel better
than I do in this dress.
My husband bought it for me
on our honeymoon.
I always feel beautiful
and important when I wear it.
Listen, the other day, uh, I saw Guy.
And then…
I hadn't always felt like it fit me,
the dress, but I'm trying harder.
And… [sighs]
…I'm starting to feel more m-myself.
Well, yourself, it suits you.
[sighs]
["Daydream" playing]
Oh! [chuckles, gasps]
[speaking indistinctly]
Mabel, I'm so sorry.
I should have told you about your mother
and the money…
The desperate scheme
to stop me being a shameful spinster?
If I wanted to marry a lord of any kind,
I'd come straight to you.
But not to my mother,
whose only aim since I was this high
has been to fix me.
I just don't want what other girls do.
I'm not even sure if I want marriage.
That's fine. That's completely fine.
Conchita…
thank you, for understanding.
Of course.
Who knows? Maybe you'll meet a man
who can change your mind.
You know, I used to think that Honoria
would never want to meet anyone,
but have you seen
how different she is now?
Her eyes used to never leave the ground
and now she's practically screaming
to spread her wings.
What can I do to win back your trust?
[sighs] I'm not sure. I-I…
I couldn't come back. I-I can't.
You're right. Of course. Small steps.
I just want you and Freddie
to live somewhere more worthy of you both.
This isn't home.
It's close.
Home is wherever Freddie is. And Nan.
This has been so hard on you, Jinny.
And I'm forever grateful to Guy
giving up his life for you.
Though I-I-I can't imagine
how you feel about that.
It isn't in your nature to be selfish.
["Tired" playing]
But I am glad you're learning
to put your own happiness first.
Oh. [speaks indistinctly]
- [chuckles] Aw.
- [cooing]
[chuckles]
[Seadown] Baba.
Lizzy, it's been days.
Are you finally beautified?
Lizzy, what is it?
[Lizzy sighs]
Is it Theo?
[sighs] What?
I've known your flirting face
since you were 12.
And your guilty face a lot longer.
Was it once?
[both sigh]
[sighs] It's like a sickness.
It's just like this beautiful sickness
and I just… I can't stop.
Like a fever?
Yes.
And after Seadown,
I thought I would never feel alive.
That alive was somehow this bad thing.
But Theo makes me feel free.
I'm not even ashamed, actually.
I feel wretched now.
Hector's everything you've wanted…
When we're together, it's inevitable.
[sighs] But it's like sleepwalking.
I'm just… I'm numb.
[grunting]
[sighs]
Mabel, what if I wake up in 20 years
with an aching chest
because the wrong man is next to me?
Listen, I've had my share of
creeping around and it's thrilling,
but it's make-believe. And fevers pass.
Yeah. And anyway, Theo's married…
to Nan.
She'd never forgive me. Why should she?
I can't even forgive myself.
Nan's in Italy.
And Lizzy,
she chose to go so you mustn't feel…
She's back. Nan's back.
And yes, she told me
that she didn't love him anymore.
That she was gone for good or, of course,
I would have never gone there.
Oh, Lizzy.
Theo, I'll be leaving early tomorrow,
then I'll be heading to London.
Conchita's hosting a party
for the eve of Lizzy's wedding,
- so we're all gonna gather and, uh…
- Well, I should come.
Good for us to appear united.
I'll see you there.
I'm sure the girls will be glad
to hear your news.
[sighs]
Hello, thank you for coming.
Thank you for coming.
Don't do it.
Sorry, what?
Don't take this heavenly man
off the market.
[both chuckle]
How is it fair on the rest of us
if you get this face?
If this is the face you get to see
morning till night your whole life.
[Hector chuckles]
[stammers] Hello. Welcome. Welcome.
Welcome.
- Heavenly.
- It's official.
- It's official. [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
You know tomorrow's just a day.
The wedding is for everyone else.
It's the marriage that's for us.
There is a member of the Cabinet there
that I'm keen to put myself in front of.
- Sure.
- Yes? Okay.
[Hector clears throat]
["With the Lights On" playing]
Hello.
[children laughing]
You look beautiful.
[chuckles]
[Freddie cooing]
[Jinny] There, there.
[Seadown] Please.
[Seadown clears throat, sighs]
I've thought about what you said…
and I'm willing to do it.
You coming back to England
to stay with Nan.
The boat leaves on Thursday.
Oh.
I'm not sure that I said…
I think Freddie should
get to know his family.
Do you… Do you feel
a tightness in your chest, my love?
I do, yes.
So do I. I've had it since you left.
It's worry. Fear.
We both feel it,
but we can make it go away.
The boat won't wait for us.
But what will people say?
They'll say that we haven't failed.
I chose you, Virginia. Remember?
[stammers]
I could have chosen other girls.
Like Lizzy?
It was always you.
[Freddie cooing]
Thank you for not giving up on me.
- Freddie hasn't slept.
- Jinny…
- I should, you know…
- Um, but…
[sighs, chuckles]
Let's get you home.
Wow, what a party.
I'm in the middle of something.
Yes, you look very busy.
Listen, I brought these for Jinny.
Is she in her room?
I thought she was with you.
I thought she was with you.
Jinny!
Guy, it's fine. I'll just leave them here.
- Jinny!
- Guy! Guy.
Well, didn't she say where she'd be?
Jinny!
Why are you so interested
in where she is all the time?
- What?
- You do what you want.
What are you talking about?
I saw you with the girl with the big eyes.
You were holding hands.
And I was going to tell Jinny,
but I did not want to break her heart.
Right, it is none of your business,
but since you're so interested,
Paloma, Jinny is not my wife.
We're not together.
We never have been, okay?
Her husband is the reason we're here.
We left England,
we left our entire lives behind
because of him.
That's why we have to be careful.
That's why I'm so interested
in where she is.
He is a dangerous brute of a man
and now I don't know where she is.
So thank you for your observation,
- but you…
- [Jinny] Hello?
I'm back.
I was worried about where you were.
I went for a walk. Is that allowed?
[sighs] Of course.
I should have said.
Uh, I'm not feeling so well.
I'm gonna go lay down for a while.
There's a stream. A château.
The sun shines.
[sighs, speaks French]
[speaks French]
[stammers, in English] The school there
is always looking for English teachers.
They tend to take notice of old academics
so if you would like me to recommend you…
[glass clinking]
Hector's about to speak.
What are you recommending her for?
It's all arranged.
Lady Honoria is off to Provence to teach,
drink black coffee and dance the cancan
in the village square.
[scoffs] Well, I can't imagine
what black coffee does
to a person's digestion.
[sighs]
Ladies and gentlemen,
thank you all for coming today.
- Esteemed guests, unesteemed guests.
- [partygoers chuckling]
- [chuckles] And also…
- [Lizzy chuckling]
…I'd like to toast a woman about to become
desperately important in my life.
- Mrs. Elmsworth.
- [gasps]
And finally, to Lizzy.
I am the luckiest man in the world.
- [Nan] Hear! Hear!
- [partygoers gasping]
- Nan! Oh, my goodness.
- Hi!
- Oh! Your Grace. [chuckles]
- [partygoers clamoring]
Excuse me. Sorry.
- [Lizzy laughs]
- Lizzy!
- [Hector chuckles]
- [Nan exclaims]
Aw, I'm so sorry to make a fuss.
No, not at all.
I couldn't be happier you're here.
Your Grace, well, lots to tell you.
Mmm. I'll be right back.
We have the Home Secretary
tentatively on side…
I have news.
Meet me in the park at 4:00.
I can't. I mustn't.
[Honoria] Conchita's letting us know when.
[Mabel] This is not the kind of thing
you'd have said yes to in the past.
You saying I've changed?
Yes. And I'm happy for you.
It's not that I used to resist fun,
I just don't think that I understood it.
When I got engaged to Miles,
you were horrified.
But now Conchita dangles lords
in front of me,
- and you just laugh. [chuckles]
- [chuckles]
[sighs]
The conversation with Hector's father…
That was a silly pipe dream.
I was rude.
Just because I'm not
interested in villages,
and I can't speak French
and I don't like pâté…
I don't even know if I like pâté.
But that's the point.
I have had adventures. I've seen places.
And, uh, I've met people.
And I've kissed girls.
- [stammers, sighs] And you…
- I've met you.
But I'm one person. I'm one girl.
And you're working out who you are.
So maybe you do want to go to France
and dance the cancan.
Ready?
[door closes]
Is that what you want? Do you think?
[glass clinks]
[Conchita] The bride's sister
would like to say a few words.
[stammers] Ma…
[sighs]
Mabel.
- [door closes]
- [sighs]
[chuckles] I have never bothered
to compete with Lizzy because,
- well, who could? [chuckles]
- [partygoers laughing]
[Mabel] Though, Hector, it's worth saying,
first thing in the morning, she is perky.
[chuckles] She's been known to sing.
It's awful.
[chuckles]
[Mabel] On Lizzy's sixth birthday
she had three wishes.
Number one, to have ten children
- to run races with her.
- Ten?
[Mabel] Number two, to have a husband
to bring her sweets every day.
Sweets? Noted.
And number three,
to have a sky blue kitten that can juggle.
[chuckles]
Now, Hector,
on the eve of Lizzy finally growing up,
the ten children and the sweets
I'm going to leave to you.
[Hector] Mmm.
[Mabel] But I'm sure we all agree,
my infuriatingly lovely big sister
deserves everything she ever wanted.
- Hmm.
- [door opens]
[partygoers cheering]
[Hector chuckles]
[chuckles]
[cheers]
Lizzy, you deserve it all.
Choose what's right for you.
Now, hardly anyone can say
they've had a sky blue kitten
that can juggle in their life. [chuckles]
So I guess it's like
having an older sister.
The trick is to try not to be sad
they're moving on,
but to be so glad you had them.
Even briefly.
To my sister.
May she have everything she wants.
- [partygoers] Hear! Hear!
- Hear! Hear!
[Hector chuckles]
[Paloma] I'm very sorry.
I don't know what I thought.
It's just I saw you with that girl
and saw the way you looked at her.
And I've met a lot of men,
and they pretend to care
but really only want a woman in their life
in the way you would want a…
furniture or a painting…
Is this meant to be an apology?
So, now I need to know.
Who's the girl? Hmm? Is she yours?
No. Not mine.
Uh, it's complicated.
[sighs]
She's a duchess.
Duchess, huh?
[clicks tongue, speaks Italian]
I didn't show her my curtsy.
- What happened?
- Paloma, do you mind?
All right? It's over. She's gone.
And it is the last thing in the world
I wanna think about.
We'll do something else then.
It's not fair of you to come.
Now that Nan's back
you have to go be with her.
But she's not back.
Only for appearances
till she can bring Jinny home.
Then she's leaving the castle.
We can be together. Everything's changed.
Don't marry him.
You know, I spent forever believing
I needed a woman
who didn't know who I was,
when what I really needed
was a woman who knows exactly who I am.
I can't hear this. I'm sorry.
I think it's the only real thing
I've felt my entire life.
Lizzy, everything until now, until you,
has been pretending.
I feel released.
I love you.
You will always be married.
What will I be?
Your mistress, forever hiding?
But with Hector you'll be hiding the fact
that you feel nothing.
Hector's offering me a life
that will be open and easy and safe.
I have had my fill of shameful secrets.
[sighs]
We would go out sailing
with my father's boat
and every time, I would fall in the water.
But on purpose because I wanted to
see the boat from a distance.
- ["Lover To Lover" playing]
- "Paloma!"
I would say, "Papa, don't worry.
I will swim around the world,
and I will meet you here."
[both laugh]
[laughs]
- [laughing]
- No!
[both laughing]
- That's not me. No.
- [chuckles]
Ooh. [laughs]
Okay. You're up.
[chuckles]
No. Paloma.
[both chuckling]
You're going to fight.
- Do it. Just once. Just once.
- [chuckles] No, Guy,
- I will hurt you because I'm strong.
- Just here. You won't.
- All right. Put that down. Put that down.
- [laughing]
- Are you sure?
- [stammers] Yes. Yes.
- Guy. No, I… I really will.
- Come on.
Prove it! [grunts]
- [squeals, chuckling]
- [grunting, chuckles]
- I think you broke my nose. [groans]
- Don't be a baby.
- [laughs, panting]
- [panting]
Why haven't we done this before?
Boxing?
[Guy chuckling, moans]
[Guy, Paloma laughing]
[sighs]
[sighs]
[Mabel] So, tell us, how is Jinny?
Where is she living?
In a perfect house
on a path that goes directly to the water.
- Are you serious?
- Mm-hmm.
- And she has learned how to cook.
- [chuckles]
- [Mabel] Really?
- Yep.
[Mabel] Are they living on toast?
[Conchita, Nan chuckle]
- Did you tell her how much we miss her?
- Endlessly.
And she misses you all so much,
desperately.
But I will bring her back home.
- And should we not ask about…
- Mm-mmm.
I'll ask. What happened with Guy?
Did you just change your mind?
No, some of the moments
with Guy were perfect.
But it… it wasn't real.
It was just, um… It just felt like
I was living somebody else's life.
Just blissful foolishness.
And I think he hates me now.
But he and Jinny are doing their part
and I'm doing my part here.
And I'm just trying not to make a mess
out of every decision I make.
Hey. Aren't we allowed a few wrong turns?
- I think I lost the map.
- [chuckles]
- [Conchita chuckles] Gosh.
- [speaks indistinctly]
- [all chuckle]
- [Mabel sighs]
Are you excited?
Yes.
Scared.
Marriage is enormous.
But Hector is so wonderful.
I'm sorry.
For the letter
and letting you go to Italy.
For all of it.
No, no, no.
You have nothing to apologize for.
I'm so happy you're here.
Me too.
- Sweet dreams, little one. Mmm.
- Good night.
[Guy grunts]
[both chuckling]
[grunts] Is it late?
[grunts] I think it's tomorrow.
- [chuckling]
- [chuckles]
[grunting]
[sighs]
Did we get in the
town square fountain last night?
[both chuckling]
- Oh, gosh.
- You said you wanted fun.
- [Guy chuckles, sighs]
- [chuckles]
The whole night felt like
being young. [sighs]
I'm glad.
I'm also glad it wasn't you.
Who Jinny said was
disappointing under the sheets.
Thought it made no sense.
[mumbling]
[chuckles]
I will go. Thank you.
What are you doing?
We're adults. No regrets. No guilt.
Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
- Wait. Wait.
- [sighs]
Paloma, what's happening here?
I really did have a good time.
And I would like to see you again.
Well, maybe we do it again.
[grunts]
[door opens]
[Lavinia] Lizzy. Wake up. Today's the day.
[Conchita] Mmm.
[sighs] Come on, girls.
[Conchita sighs]
Today's the day.
Ha. I tell you,
he has shot himself in the foot
with this new budget speech.
Ah.
[Hector sighs]
Can you not at least allow me
a proud father of the groom moment?
She's a remarkable woman.
- And lucky.
- [chuckles]
- I'm very proud.
- [chuckles]
And we'll be sure to
look out for one another.
That's what it's all about, isn't it?
[stammers]
It's some of what it's all about, yes.
[doorbell rings]
[chuckles]
- [sighs]
- [knocks on door]
Visitor.
You'll be in the midst of things.
I've had an entire carriage ride
to come up with an excuse
for disturbing you, and drawn a blank.
Well, might you have come to see me?
[chuckles]
That's the only thing I'm certain of.
Nan's back. She's back.
And she'll take care of things.
I'm sure of it.
So does this mean…
it can be your time?
I think, perhaps, it could be ours.
If you can look beyond
my youthful foolishness.
I was rather hoping
for some elderly foolishness.
With your knees?
[chuckles]
[both laugh]
[Lavinia sighs]
Lizzy will not decide about her hair.
Mabel?
Lizzy's the last one. Isn't she?
Only me left unmarried. So…
I think I might come home to New York.
And just give up?
I think it might be easier.
Montreal.
What?
I went to Montreal when I was small.
And I thought,
"Well, it doesn't get better than this."
I mean, the buildings, the people.
I thought, "I could stay here till I die.
[stammers] Until I'm old and can't speak."
[Mabel chuckles]
Because that's what you do
when you're young.
You find a home in these places
like Montreal.
And it feels like you won't fit in
anywhere else.
Then someone says,
"You there with the plain brown hair
and the thick ankles,
you wanna come to New York with me?"
- [chuckles]
- "Or Coney Island? Or London?"
And you think,
"No. I only want to go back to Montreal."
Until you discover
that the world is beautiful,
wild and gloriously huge.
And Montreal's not the only place in it.
It's just the first one
you fell in love with.
[sighs] Disappointment
mustn't stop you living, Mabel.
[inhales shakily] Don't give up.
Life is tough. And wonderful.
- Like you. [sighs]
- [chuckles]
[cries]
- Also I have a lot of plans for July so…
- [chuckles]
- I can't be running around after you.
- [sniffles]
Bringing you food and having you
moping around the house.
[chuckles]
- [footsteps departing]
- [door opens]
- Lizzy! [chuckles]
- You look beautiful.
[Mabel chuckles]
- Lizzy, you look amazing.
- [giggles]
You look so beautiful.
[chuckling, chattering]
["Fly Too Close" playing]
[no audible dialogue]
[pants]
["Fly Too Close" continues]
Lizzy?
I just need a moment.
Theo, what is going on?
- [Theo] I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I know.
- The wedding is right now.
It's happening now.
Don't get married.
- This isn't fair.
- I know and I'm so sorry. I just…
You look extraordinary by the way.
I just had to say don't get married
unless you're certain
Hector gives you the kind of love
you and I have.
If he does, go in there and marry him.
And I will stand in that church
with sweaty hair, and I will cheer.
But if you decide he doesn't
give you that fever…
You should absolutely not be with me.
What?
Because you're right.
We can only ever exist in secret.
And you deserve someone
who can make you feel,
but who can also make you feel safe.
A whole love.
With all the passion and laughter,
but also legitimacy
and standing side-by-side.
So hold out for that, Lizzy.
Because you deserve both.
A great love. It's out there. It exists.
You deserve your own love story.
So don't choose me.
But also don't just choose
the first nice man who comes along
and offers you half of it.
You should have it all.
So choose you.
I mean, who wouldn't?
[sighs]
[sniffles]
[breathes shakily]
[Conchita] Is everything all right?
[breathing shakily]
- Oh, there she is.
- Lizzy, what's wrong?
[breathes shakily]
Lizzy?
