Hyde and Woe Seek

1
[Morticia, faintly]
"Double, double, toil and trouble."
[echoes] "Fire burn, and cauldron bubble."
"Cool it with a baboon's blood."
"By the pricking of my thumbs,
something wicked this way comes."
[somber music playing]
How's our little cadaver?
[Morticia] The doctor suggested
I read to her.
I chose Macbeth.
Nothing like death, despair,
and dismemberment
to try and snap her out of her coma.
[Gomez] Tish, come on.
Denmark will still be rotten tomorrow.
Wrong tragedy, mon chéri.
[Gomez] Come on.
[jolting stinger]
[Wednesday gasps]
[shocking stinger]
Rise and shine, sleepy head.
Principal Weems?
Ready for your sponge bath?
What ring of Hell is this?
[gleeful titter]
[disorienting music playing]
[Weems whispering] Miss Addams
This isn't Hell.
But I understand the confusion.
If I'm not dead, then why are you here?
Because I am your new spirit guide.
Surprise!
That's impossible.
A spirit guide must be a relative.
Turns out we're 13th cousins.
Twice removed.
There has to be another option.
Your last spirit guide
literally gave up her ghost to save you.
Believe me, nobody was putting up
their hand for this assignment.
Yet here you are.
The tantalizing prospect
of tormenting you from beyond the grave
was just too delicious to pass up.
Now, you've certainly been a busy bee.
Just a recap
You lost your psychic ability.
Only after I mastered it.
You lied to your one and only friend,
Enid Sinclair, about her impending doom.
I was protecting her.
And the coup de grâce,
freeing Tyler Galpin, a homicidal Hyde,
from a high-security
psychiatric institution.
Congratulations, Miss Addams.
Your hubris has yet again made you
the architect of your own demise.
I didn't think death
could make you any more condescending.
And your arrogance
has only made you more insufferable.
Why don't you restore my ability,
so we can go our separate ways?
Your ability
is inextricably tied to who you are.
You abused it.
You sound like my mother.
Sticks and stones.
Except,
I have no bones.
I'm done being lectured.
Then wake up!
[snaps twice]
[jauntily macabre music playing]
[music trails off]
Good afternoon. I'm Judi Stonehurst,
interim director of Willow Hill.
Two weeks ago, our facility
suffered a catastrophic power failure.
As a result, 46 of our residents escaped.
Sadly, there were several deaths,
including our beloved director,
Dr. Rachael Fairburn.
But, with the heroic help
of the sheriff's department,
we have apprehended 43 of those fugitives.
[voice quavering]
They'll be reassigned to other facilities,
since Willow Hill is
closed for the foreseeable future.
Thank you.
- [reporters clamoring]
- [reporter] Sheriff Santiago!
The three fugitives still at large
are Fester Addams,
a patient known as "John Doe,"
and Tyler Galpin.
I need to reiterate that they are
considered extremely dangerous.
If you see any of them,
contact the sheriff's department
immediately.
Yes.
Do you think they're still in the area?
We believe Fester Addams is long gone.
It's hard to say with John Doe.
We do know that Tyler suffered
multiple gunshot wounds.
[reporters clamoring]
- No more questions at this time.
- [phone chimes]
Ms. Stonehurst,
Wednesday Addams just woke up.
I'm curious to hear
about her part in all of this.
As I told you, Sheriff, it was
a simple case of wrong place, wrong time.
She snuck in to pay
her uncle an unauthorized visit.
Sure she wasn't trying to free him?
It's hardly credible
that an ordinary teenage girl
could be capable of circumventing
Willow Hill security.
"Ordinary" is the last word I'd use
to describe Wednesday Addams.
Hmm.
Well, if you'll excuse me,
an interim director's work is never done.
[chuckling]
[phone ringing]
[line trilling]
[man] I've eliminated all the escapees
from the LOIS lab, except one.
Patient 1938.
By the looks of her,
this one ain't gonna put up a fight.
[Stonehurst] The sheriff's still blind
about LOIS and I want to keep it that way.
Now, I emptied out
my rainy day fund hiring you,
so do your job and find her.
[footsteps approaching]
Leaving so soon?
I brought you some lilies.
Mmm.
It's a sign of renewal and fresh starts.
The sheriff will be getting an anonymous
tip to check out your secret lab.
I'm afraid all she'll find
are boxes of dusty files.
My secrets are dead and buried
in places no one will ever find them.
- If you've come to gloat--
- Who's gloating?
You destroyed my father's life's work.
I'm here to make sure that
you don't scorch the earth any further.
Scorched earth is just a warm-up.
I aim for total incineration.
I would keep that trigger finger
off your flamethrower, missy.
Unless you'd like me
to tell Sheriff Santiago
how you illegally broke into Willow Hill.
Who's patient 1938?
Why didn't she get a fake obituary?
What makes her so special?
I don't know who you're talking about.
Seems like all your secrets
aren't dead and buried.
[candy striper] Wednesday Addams?
Never delivered dead flowers before.
[ominous music playing]
Who gave you this?
[horrifying music trilling]
[suspenseful music building]
[woman] Buenos días, sickly children.
We are here spreading Day of the Dead joy.
It's you! I recognize
that fudge-curdling glare.
A pox on thee!
Direct from Pilgrim World,
meet our Mayflower Mariachis.
[pensive, mysterious music playing]
[Bianca] Don't worry, Mom.
Nobody's going to find you here.
After the fire last semester,
this part of the school is off-limits.
As long as you're here, you'll be safe
from Gideon and Morning Song.
[relieved sigh]
So I Googled this Gideon guy.
Someone reported seeing him
at a motel in Boston last week.
- He's getting closer.
- Please don't tell my mom.
It'll freak her out even more.
Oh, man. I still can't believe
you guys are involved
in this whole Morning Song scandal.
My mother was one of its first members.
Gideon used her siren song
to recruit people.
She told me that when it started,
they were actually
trying to help Outcasts.
It was a real community.
So what changed?
Cults often set out with good intentions.
Growing up, Gideon was my hero.
Of all the kids, I was his favorite.
But then his mask slipped,
and I realized he was grooming me
to take over for my mom.
Everything spiraled so quickly.
Look, as long as no one knows
your mom's at Nevermore,
Gideon can't touch her or you.
Wednesday! I didn't think
you were gonna be back for days.
What are you doing here?
I've come to observe you
in your natural habitat.
[cheeky, eccentric music playing]
[Enid] Uh
I live here, remember?
You're probably still sore
from your injuries.
Pain reminds me that I'm still alive.
Your mom said you were
staying at the cottage to recuperate.
There's no time for that.
Tyler's still out there.
Sheriff Santiago said he's either dead
from the gunshot wounds or long gone.
He's alive.
He's in Jericho.
You saw him?
I need you to pack up and go home.
Leave? Why?
He has plans to kill both of us.
I'm going to fix it.
Fix it? You're the reason he escaped.
She's got a point.
I'm not scared of Tyler.
I already took him down once.
There's not a full moon for another week.
You got lucky last time.
What do you mean lucky?
I still have the scars from that fight.
Tyler had you pinned against a tree
and was going to rip your throat out
until Galpin shot him.
I read the police statement.
Then I guess it was lucky
I showed up and saved your life.
Tyler was going to gut you as well.
[Weems] She's got you there too.
- Tell her the truth about the premonition.
- Stay out of this.
Who are you talking to?
No one.
Okay, I'm going to blame
this conversation on your head trauma.
Enid, I'm trying to save you.
I don't need you to save me.
Is that why you stuck me
on lookout duty at Willow Hill?
Do you think I'm that helpless?
[scoffs softly] Your silence is deafening.
- Where are you going?
- To be with my pack.
You might think
you're the only capable one here,
but you can't do everything on your own.
That's not how the world works,
even for Wednesday Addams.
[Weems] Miss Sinclair for the win.
Stay out of my room and my head.
[Wednesday] Tyler declared
that Enid and I will die today.
He may be a deranged psychopath,
but his timing is poetic.
If I could choose my last day,
El Día de los Muertos
would top my wish list.
The Day of the Dead has
always been my favorite holiday.
Macabre decor, graveyard gatherings,
and the chance to commune
with dead relatives.
What's not to like?
Unfortunately, this year
an unwelcome ghost
from my past has turned up uninvited.
I was curious to see
where the Weems memorial was placed.
I did sacrifice my life
for the school, after all.
I preferred Goody's cryptic pronouncements
to your spectral stalking.
I wasn't expecting anything ostentatious.
My portrait joining those on the wall
of illustrious past principals.
Perhaps a bronze bust,
maybe even a small
memorial shrine with candles.
Even a cuddly toy or two.
If you're not gonna give me
my psychic ability back, you're dismissed.
I'm not a genie.
I don't grant wishes.
If you want your ability back, that starts
with an honest self-assessment.
[students whooping]
Nice catch, Mr. Ottinger!
Who's next?
- Who on Earth is that?
- Principal Dort.
[Weems] Dort? Never heard of him.
And he certainly wasn't on my list
of pre-approved successors.
Happy Día de los Muertos!
Anything for a t-shirt, am I right?
All right.
This is also
our Outcast Day of Remembrance.
Following annual tradition,
at midnight the remembrance procession
will head to the Nevermore cemetery,
and pay our respects
to all those who have gone before us.
Don't worry,
it won't be a complete downer
because there will also be food trucks!
[students cheering]
Food trucks!
Yeah! [laughs]
He's a carnival barker
masquerading as an educator.
[Wednesday] Principal Dort.
Wednesday. It is good to see you back
among the living on this Day of the Dead.
The day is young.
If there's anything I can do
to help your recovery
Cancel tonight's festivities.
Tyler's still out there.
According to Sheriff Santiago,
he fled town.
He hasn't. His threat is real.
I appreciate your concern,
and your trauma,
but we aren't canceling tonight.
I've invited several prominent donors,
and they will be here
to see our community in action.
The only thing they'll see is
a Hyde ripping them limb from limb.
In the remote off-chance
Tyler Galpin breaches our wall,
we have a school full of Outcasts
ready to take him on.
Especially Professor Capri.
What does she know about taking on a Hyde?
She has a history with them.
You aren't alone in this anymore,
Wednesday.
One more question.
How do you plan on honoring
the late Principal Weems tonight?
[Dort] Honor?
I've spent months trying to expunge
that woman's memory
from every student and every donor's mind.
She lingers like the smell of rancid Brie.
[Dort] Blech.
After everything I've done
to burnish this school's reputation
There's your honest assessment.
[sardonic, eccentric music playing]
[music trails off]
[creature chirring, growling]
There you are, mijo.
I realize your mother and I
have been so focused on your sister,
we haven't been around for you.
It's not just that.
[pensive music playing]
I'm worried about Slurp.
I know he's done some bad things,
but it's not his fault he's hungry.
[flytrap gurgling]
Losing your first pet can be hard.
Your Uncle Fester had a chupacabra
when he was about your age.
No matter how much
of his blood he gave it to drink,
it wasn't meant to be a pet.
I raised Slurp from the dead.
He's my responsibility.
And
I know if they find him,
they'll put him down for good.
What about this? What about
if I help you track your zombie?
We'll make it a father-son adventure.
- Hmm?
- Yeah.
Yeah.
[bird cawing]
[taut, suspenseful music playing]
[branches snapping]
[Galpin] This is
what your life has come to?
Cowering in a sewer, all alone.
You're not real.
Thank God your mother

Think of all the hopes
and dreams she had for you.
Her only child.
Her beloved son.
She'd be so disappointed.
You don't get to talk about her!
She deserved better than you.
Yeah, on that we are in agreement.
You always looked at me with fear.
You knew this would happen.

By crawling into a bottle and ignoring me?

You killed your master.
That's a bold move, son.
I didn't need her.
I don't need anyone.
Turn yourself in.
Leave me alone!

Leave me alone!
Leave me alone! Leave me alone!

[Capri] Wednesday.
Good to see you on your feet.
Not many people can say
they survived a Hyde attack.
Well, you're one of them.
Principal Dort told me.
Alfie Penn. Name ring a bell?
Seems your ex-boyfriend
was shot dead after attacking you.
How dare you snoop in my desk?
You met Alfie
at an artist colony in Woodstock.
He was at the forefront of something
titled "violent expressionism,"
otherwise known as "splatter art."
Until his life began to imitate his work.
What drove him to try and kill you?
Tyler Galpin is coming.
I need to learn
everything I can about Hydes.
I never knew Alfie's true nature.
Only that we were happy together.
You fell in love with a monster.
His master was in love with him too.
She ordered him to kill me.
Luckily it was a full moon
so I was able to fight him off.
But Alfie accidentally
killed her in the process.
It was horrible.
I heard a Hyde
can't survive without a master.
Males can't. They go crazy without one.
Psychosis, paranoia,
rapid physical decline,
ultimately premature death.
But the females are
stronger than the males.
More dominant.
Has a Hyde ever taken on a new master?
I mean, not that I know of.
[chuckles] Who would be
reckless enough to try?
I I strongly recommend
that you don't entertain the idea.
Of course not.
That would be insane.
[portentous music playing]
[Capri] Wednesday?
Wednesday!
[wet slurping, munching]
[strained gasp]
I gave my life to save that school.
And now my entire legacy
is being denigrated
because I made one bad normie hire.
Marilyn Thornhill.
I don't do whining,
especially from dead people.
And it was a monumentally bad hire.
She murdered you, remember?
Speaking of Thornhill, what are you up to?
None of your business.
[Morticia] Who are you
talking to, sweetheart?
No one, Mother.
What are you doing
with these boxes from the garage?
I was going to have Lurch
burn all of Thornhill's things.
Your preferred method of destroying
vital information that I need?
We never really got a chance
to talk since you woke up.
I'm most comfortable
with uncomfortable silence.
On the Day of the Dead,
we focus so much on those we lost.
I just want to make sure
that those who are still here
know how much they mean to me.
Your mother is still
as hideously sentimental as she was at 16.
[Morticia] Hmm.
What is it, Mother?
I sense another presence here.
[gasps softly] Strange.
It's the same feeling I used to have when
Larissa Weems walked into the room.
Is it the cloying need to be liked,
with the sickly scent of superiority?
Yes. She was lonely, Wednesday.
I was not lonely.
I had a very robust social life.
It died years before you did.
[Morticia] Hmm.
This is an organic chemistry formula.
And if it's in Thornhill's notes,
I presume this is about Tyler Galpin.
I need to be prepared
in case he comes back.
She doesn't believe you, and neither do I.
Wednesday, I know
your thirst for revenge is unquenchable,
but please don't court this monster.
You need to stay out of this.
[Bruno] You're right.
Wednesday can't take down a Hyde alone.
And Wednesday's right too.
You did get lucky.
Okay, not exactly
the kind of support I was looking for.
You're being hunted by an apex predator
outside of our lunar cycle.
[Enid scoffs]
Perhaps going home
for a few weeks isn't a bad idea.
You can't take on Tyler alone.
[spry, plucky music playing]
Enid!
[breathless] Thing! Oh, thank God.
Wednesday and I cannot
take on Tyler by ourselves.
I need your help
to reactivate the Nightshades.

Not to mention Dr. Fairburn
and the others at Willow Hill.
Look at these lacerations.
Remind you of anything?
Do you think Tyler Galpin's
working with the zombie?
The fact that you and I are having
a serious conversation about this
tells you everything
you need to know about Jericho.
We're only a few miles from Nevermore.
I want squad cars
sitting on those gates around the clock.
My bet,
that's where Tyler's going.

my whole life."
I've always believed
that to be haunted is a choice.
What we are really haunted by is our past.
No matter how hard we try
to shake it free,
it has us by the teeth.
Pugsley's zombie,
it's Isaac.
Francoise is alive too.
[music swells]
[Wednesday] If this past haunts us
Oh, fiddlesticks!
[Wednesday] the present is a graveyard
that requires payment for transgressions.
[jittery, uneasy music playing]
- [gasps]
- [Isaac] Hello, Judi.
Do you remember me?
[Wednesday] Tyler and his mother
are now reunited.
Will Francoise keep her word
and go quietly into the night?
Or is she set on a darker purpose?
I've kept Enid safe until now.
But my investigation is stymied,
and I can feel time slipping away
like sand through an hourglass.
[Enid panting raggedly]
[keening howls echo]
[music trails off]
[jauntily macabre outro music playing]
