You know she's working really hard
to get you outta here early.
Once we wrap up our latest project,
we'll be set for life. You. Me. Ricky.
I can't wait.
We'll leave everything
and everyone behind.
Because I know who killed your brother.
[MALE VOICE RECORDING] Kid was in
the wrong place at the wrong time.
Tough luck for him, but
I had to take him out.
I've been waiting for over a
year for a break in this case.
- You can't be involved.
- What do you got, Ricky?
[RICKY] Ellis, I found him.
His name's Billy
O'Brien. Nicknamed Zippo.
- [RICKY] He's a mob enforcer.
- [SIMMONS] We missed him.
He had a police scanner in there.
He must've known we were coming.
Damn it.
[GEORGE] So, this parole
board walks into a bar.
Bartender says, "Hey, guys."
"How about a round on the house?"
And they say, "Sure!"
"As long as no one's expecting
any good behavior from us tonight."
[LAUGHS]
[CLEARS THROAT] Wow. Tough room.
[WOMAN] George Graham, this parole board
has been convened to
determine your potential,
or lack thereof,
for reintegration and
risk to the community.
As you're aware,
the initial term of your incarceration
has been truncated
due to your daughter's
cooperation with the police.
And I want you to know how
grateful I am for this opportunity.
We need more than gratitude.
We need assurance that you understand
the impact of your
crimes on your victims.
Genuine insight can be a strong
indicator of personal growth.
Absolutely.
The time I've had inside these walls
has given me a lot of
opportunity to reflect and
understand how I came to be here.
I've been doing this a
long time, Mr. Graham.
But this situation is
unusual, to say the least.
So, this is your time to
tell us what you've learned
and why we should believe
that you are now ready
to become a law-abiding citizen.
[EXHALES]
Like most life stories
you've probably heard,
mine begins with a mixed up childhood.
I won't bore you with
the whole soap opera,
but the bottom line is,
by the time I was 16,
I was out and on my own.
Go on.
[GEORGE] With no parents,
no family and no money,
the streets will chew
you up and spit you out
unless you figure out how to survive.
I was at my lowest,
most desperate moment
when I met someone who
taught me how to do just that.
Survive.
He became my mentor,
teaching me the craft
of the con artist trade.
I knew it was wrong.
But when you don't know where
your next meal is coming from,
you do what you have to do just to eat.
Anyway, in time,
he became like a father to me.
So, I worked really hard
at everything he taught me.
And the harder I worked,
the better I did
the more proud of me he became.
Having this time in here to think
I've come to realize
I wasn't seeking money all these years.
I was seeking approval.
Affirmation that I mattered to someone.
To anyone.
So, where did all that get me?
In here.
There's so much I wanna do with
the time I have left on Earth.
I wanna give back to
people, not take from them.
I wanna be a contribution
to society, not a detriment.
But most importantly
I wanna be a proper

I wanna be the kind
of father I never had.

All right, so we have some

He'd be in his 20's by now.
He aged outta the
system and fell back in
with a rough crowd, so
Daniel started playing
basketball with him
on Tuesdays to help
him get back on track.
Including the Tuesday
that Daniel was murdered?
Tyson said he was playing
basketball with Daniel
the night he was killed, but
that can't be true if Zippo killed him

Why would Tyson lie?
That's what we gotta find out.
Tyson? Hey.
I'm Daniel's brother.
Appreciate you talking with me.
I was hoping to ask you a few questions.

- [RICKY] Elena Ramos.
- [CAMERA CLICKS]
She's owned the Granville Jazz

Come with me.
I'll tell you what I can. For Daniel.
Thank you.
- What was this boy's name?
- Samson Ramos.
Oh, wow.
Samson. [CHUCKLES]
When he first came to us,
he had already fallen
in with some bad people.
He was a tough case. I couldn't
even get through to him.
But Daniel
he saw a sweetness in him.
A sort of, uh, thoughtfulness.
Daniel could see the good
in just about anybody.
Well, one day
I caught the kid with
drugs here at the center.
So, what happened, did you kick him out?
Nope. Daniel made it
his personal mission
to make sure he got through to Samson.
So, with Daniel's help,
he turned things around?
Oh, yeah. 180 degrees. Before long,
Samson was mentoring other
kids here at the center.
Daniel saved that kid's life.
- Do you know where he is now?
- No idea.
He came by here looking for
Daniel the day after he got killed.
[INHALES SHARPLY]
I had to deliver the news to him.
- I'm sure that was difficult.
- Yeah.
How did he take it?
Like every other kid I had to tell.
Devastated.
He'd become a fixture around here.
A real dedicated mentor.
So a couple of days later,
I wondered where he went.
Did you reach out to him?
Well, I end up talking to his mother.
And she said Samson was
so broken up about
Daniel's death that, um,
he didn't wanna come back here.
I thought that was kinda odd.
So, I called again the next day.
And that's when she said he was gone.
Do you know where he went?
Well, his mother said
that she sent him outta
town to live with his aunt.
And then she told me
never to call again.
I remember her being
very terse about it.
Did that strike you as
suspicious at the time?
Yes and no.
Daniel was a flame,
who burned bright for
a whole lotta people.
With that extinguished?
[EXHALES SHARPLY]
Even I wanted to run away.
No, trust me, I did too.
And I did, in a lotta ways.
You don't think he had anything to do
- with Daniel's death, do you?
- I don't know.
I hope not.
There's one more thing.
Do you remember a kid named Tyson?
Yes.
Did Tyson and Samson know each other?
No. Tyson's older.
They never would've crossed paths.
All right.
Well, I appreciate you
taking the time to talk to me,
and I know you didn't have to.
- Thank you.
- Anything for Daniel.
You're welcome.
Detective.
Yeah.
I once asked Daniel
why he stuck it out
with the difficult cases.
He said because life wasn't easy.
But anything could be accomplished
with a little tough love
and a lotta hard work.
That sounds like Daniel.
He said he learned that from you.
I still can't find
anything on Samson Ramos.
It's it's like he just disappeared.
Okay, this is what we know.
Daniel was killed right here
in the alley behind Mill Street,
and his body was moved to
the jogging path across town,
to make it look like a
mugging near his house.
Okay, so Tyson lied about
seeing Daniel, twice.
The second time, after talking to Ellis,
he went straight to the Granville.
Where he was let in by Elena
Ramos, owner and operator.
Whose son Samson was mentored by Daniel
and disappeared days
after Daniel's murder.
- We're good at this.
- Yeah, we should start
- our own police department.
- No, there's no money in it.
If I could just talk to Samson,
he could tell us what happened.
Well, I just found him.
- What? How?
- Well, I wasn't getting anywhere
using the name Samson Ramos.
But of course, he's not gonna use
his real name if he's in hiding.
So, I tried his mother's maiden name.
And voilà.
He's in his first year
at college out east.
Someone moves away
and changes their name,
they don't wanna be found.
But why wouldn't Samson wanna be found?
What does he know? What did he see?
Well, his mom sent him away
right after Daniel's murder,
so that couldn't have
been a coincidence.
- [GEORGE] No.
- Maybe he's guilty of something.
Or he saw something and he's scared.
I need to talk to him.
Now that I know who he is
I can get you his number pronto.
No, it's gotta be face to face.
If I call him, he'll just hang up on me.
The woman at the center was very clear.
Him and Daniel were really close.
Okay, Ricky will get you a flight,
and we'll figure out what's
really going on inside that club.
- I'm gonna need a new outfit.
- On it.
- No.
- Hey! You may be a good detective.
But wardrobe
- that's my department.
- Yeah.
You guys have done enough
already, and I appreciate it, okay?
But Daniel was my brother.
I'm willing to take this risk, but
I can't ask you guys to do the same.
When's he gonna get it?

[ELLIS] Yeah, the perfect

All right, so we have some

- Who's Tyson?
He's a kid Daniel used to work with.
He'd be in his 20's by now.
He aged outta the
system and fell back in
with a rough crowd, so
Daniel started playing
basketball with him
on Tuesdays to help
him get back on track.
Including the Tuesday
that Daniel was murdered?
Tyson said he was playing
basketball with Daniel
the night he was killed, but
that can't be true if Zippo killed him
across town at the same time.
Why would Tyson lie?
That's what we gotta find out.
Tyson? Hey.
I'm Daniel's brother.
Appreciate you talking with me.
I was hoping to ask you a few questions.

I just got off work.

Nope. Daniel made it

Oh, yeah. 180 degrees. Before long,
