didn't know what they meant at first.
About a month ago, Teddy started holding
a pen in his hand all the time.
Now, people who develop
a tremor sometimes do that
to help stop the hand from shaking.

Tonight's Lyme.
Next month, pediatrics,
cancer and the wetlands.
Each cause fighting for…
every dollar.
- None of which is why I'm here.
- Mmm.
Right, why are you here again?
To look into Roman Sinquerra's abduction.
Don't mistake my silence for guilt,
Lieutenant.
Silence is a language for people who
can afford not to explain themselves.
Well, I got 25 years on the force
that says otherwise.
I have zero to offer you,
but I'm sure you didn't come all this way
without doing your homework.
Well, let's see, I know that you grew up
in North Jersey,
oldest child of Meredith,
a public-school teacher, and Ray, who
worked for an industrial
laundry service.
Cute.
Did you get that online?
Did it also say that my dad believed
in the value of labor
and his word
- and the American Dream?
- Not you?
He was on the job for 30 years.
They cut back his hours.
He lost his insurance.
Then his union slow-walked him
to the grave.
He died at 51 from a heart attack,
shoveling snow in front of the house
we were about to lose.
My mom taught public school for 40 years.
And she was devout.
Never missed a mass.
She prayed… [INHALES]
…through my brother's leukemia,
then she prayed through her own cancer,
lighting candles for a God
that never answered.
Why are you telling me this?
Because my parents believed
in rules that don't exist.
And systems that failed them.
Justice doesn't show up
because you deserve it, hmm?
It's doled out by people
in rooms like this.
Well, if you've done this…
to impress me or scare me,
then you didn't do your homework.
I didn't come all this way
to leave empty-handed.
- I will call Marvin…
- Mmm.
…and get some time on your schedule.
Enjoy your party.
And this is a flashlight from Apollo 13.
Teddy said that it kept him humble.
The biggest emergency he faced
on the ISS was some broken plumbing,
which isn't nothing,
but those guys nearly died.
Well, he certainly sounds
like a wonderful man.
Thank you. And you're right, he was.
Do you have any idea
who could have done this?
Not yet, but we wanted
to ask you some questions about Teddy.
Sure, go ahead.
It's early days,
and we're just following leads,
but the toxin that killed Teddy
is a highly restricted nerve agent,
the kind of thing
that spies use on other spies.
And you've heard about the suspicions
from a few years ago?
Yeah, that he was having secret meetings
with the Russians. Is it true?
I had the same worry,
so I asked him about it.
He told me that all
he did was have dinner
with some of his Russian counterparts.
You think that's why he got killed?
It could explain why things happened
the way they did
and how whoever killed him
had access to the nerve agent.
Is this the speech
he was planning on giving?
Uh, I forgot I even had it.
Who is AstraMollis?
They're an aerospace contractor.
- Why? Did he mention them?
- Yeah, did you not read that?
[KARADEC] Oh, he does
more than mention them.
This speech basically endorses them to
build the first
commercial space station.
How much do you think
that contract would have been worth?
- Billions, I'm sure.
- And Teddy had Washington's ear, right?
Weren't there some people floating him
for Congress?
They definitely listened
to anything he had to say on space.
So coming from him, this could highly
influence whoever gets that contract.
And who didn't. I don't think the timing
of this attack was a coincidence at all.
Someone did not want
Teddy giving that speech.
[KARADEC] It's called
the low Earth orbit economy.
They're saying it's the next gold rush.
The ISS is going to be retired
in a few years
and private companies are falling
over each other to build replacements.
Zero-G manufacturing,
it's the new frontier.
Everything from drugs to computers.
It's a trillion-dollar industry.
So you think somebody killed Teddy
Barrow to stop him
from backing one player?
That's our current theory, yeah.
Hmm. But who was on the losing end
of that speech?
Daphne and Oz are putting together a list.
I'll keep you posted.
Detective Karadec.
Before you go,
I told Gillory I want to help
with the Roman case.
Hmm. I'm sorry I missed that.
How do I get her to let me in?
To the case?
You don't get Morgan Gillory
to do anything.
Surprised you didn't know that by now.
Lieutenant, you are persistent.
Sit. Thank you, Cleo.
I like you.
You don't wait for permission.
You get what you want. You get results.
You are unapologetic, decisive.
And you know how this city works
under the surface
and not a lot of people do these days.
I could use someone like you.
Triple the pay, no red tape, no politics.
You work fast, things move with you.
More reach, more change.
I'm not here to be recruited.
I'm here because 16 years ago,
an FBI agent was murdered.
Days later, a father disappeared,
and a little girl grew up without him.
And every step I've taken has led me
here to you.
Well…
I'm afraid you're on the wrong trail.
We found this in Roman's backpack.
Our techs have been working
overtime extracting the data,
but the day Roman was abducted,
Hayworth was carrying this phone.
And I'm guessing,
the information we extract from it
will prove I'm on the right trail.
Have you been carrying that thing
around with you this whole time?
I have something to offer you.
- Ooh.
- Come clean.
Before we extract the data,
the courts will see it as cooperation.
Might treat you differently.
And you think that would matter to me?
It should.
[OZ] Got to be honest, I don't know
anything about space stations,
Mr. Bashayan,
but these designs look very impressive.
Thank you. I mean, I know I'm biased,
but I think
they're the best in the business.
How did it make you feel
knowing Teddy Barrow disagreed?
Did he? I didn't know.
Yeah, he was about to endorse AstraMollis.
You're not AstraMollis, you're Galaxy Arc.
That would have given them a leg up
on building the next space station.
And driven investments away from you.
[CHUCKLES]
So when you asked me to come in
saying you had questions about Teddy,
you meant you think I had him killed?
The trouble with your theory is,
until just now,
I didn't know Teddy was
planning to endorse anyone.
Well, the speech he was about to give
was publicly promoted.
True. But did anyone see
the content of his speech?
As far as I know, no one did.
And I promise you I would have heard.
Speaking as someone
who knows how bad this can be, detectives,
I think your theory has a hole in it.
How we doing?
I'm fine. I don't know how you're doing.
I just got off the phone
with the organizers
from the symposium Teddy Barrow
was supposed to speak at.
They backed what the guy
at Galaxy Arc said.
Teddy didn't share his speech
ahead of time with them
and, as far as they know, not anyone else.
When you spoke to Heidi,
she said she didn't know Teddy planned
that endorsement either,
- right?
- Mmm.
Any chance she was lying?
Maybe she's in a rival bidder's pocket.
- If anyone knew, it had to be her.
- We considered that,
checked her financials,
but weren't able to find any connections
between her and those companies.
Also, I just got a call from Heidi.
She wanted us to know that tomorrow
she's going to be giving Teddy's speech.
Why? What, she wants to continue his work,
tell the world
who he planned on endorsing?
That's the idea.
Well, that probably rules her out as
a suspect, at least on financial motive.
Why kill him only to deliver it herself?
Yeah, but hold on a second.
Teddy got killed because he was
planning on giving this speech.
If she wants to tell the world she's going
to deliver it too,
that paints a target on her back.
[HEIDI] You think that if I give
this speech, it'll put me in danger.
We certainly think it's possible,
which is why we'd like you to hold off.
At least until we find Teddy's killer.
But you don't want to do that?
No.
I wanna honor Teddy's memory and
share with the world
what he believed in.
It's my decision, right?
Then we'll do everything we can to
protect you, but you
understand the risks?
Neither of you ever met Teddy, did you?
I didn't, but I do have to admit
my son might be his biggest fan,
so I kind of feel like I knew him.
I told you that he finally proposed
to me, but I don't think I told you how.
He drove us all night
to find my favorite constellation.
You can only see it a few times a year
and there are really only a few places
that you can see it.
He, of course, had a million things
that he should have been doing,
but that was Teddy.
Once he set his mind to something,
there was no stopping him.
Hmm.
I don't want this to stop the work
that he believed in either.
Then you're delivering
his speech verbatim?
Yeah, I did a little cleanup and added
a statement of my own at the end.
You mind if we get a copy
of your latest draft?
It'll help us plan your protection,
follow along.
Sure, wait here. There's something else
I want to give you too.
You want to see if she changed his speech?
Well, if she's really reading his words,
then she's not the one
who wanted to stop it.
I don't have a full take on this lady yet,
but she does seem like
she really loved the guy.
Hmm.
Here's the speech.
And this is for your son.
Thank you.
That toy shares Teddy's record number
of hours in space.
- He brought it with him on every mission.
- No way.
Yeah, he called it
his zero-gravity indicator.
The second he saw that lion floating
around in front of him,
he knew that the launch was a success.
He'd want your son to have it.
This is…
This is really incredible. Thank you.
- Oh, my God, it's Ziggi.
- Ziggi?
Z-G-I, Teddy Barrow's

[CHUCKLING] This thing's been in space.

[EXHALES]
What's with the pen?
- What pen?
- He's holding a pen in his hand.
In the same hand in every picture
for, like, a month.
And he was holding it on the day he died.
Maybe it was
his back-to-gravity indicator?
Or maybe it was an indicator
of something else.
I didn't expect to see you back.
I heard Elliot got a special gift.
How's he like it?
It's his new favorite thing,
and I think he got a present for us.
Can I see both versions of Teddy's speech?
Uh, sure.
This is the one
that Teddy was going to give
and, uh, this is Heidi's edited draft.
Okay and Heidi said she wanted
to make a couple of corrections, right?
Yeah, odd words here and there.
"Spear" where it
should say "spacecraft,"
"cabinet" where it should say "capsule."
We circled them.
[DAPHNE] But everything
that matters is the same.
What do we think those were?
Autocorrect errors?
Or a coded message?
Maybe Teddy was a spy after all.
No, I think it was something else.
See, there's a pattern
to the swapped words.
[OPERATOR 1] Three, two, one.
[OPERATOR 2] Lift off! We have lift off!
[MORGAN] "Spacecraft" becoming "spear."
"Capsule" becoming "cabinet."
"Helmet" becoming "hard hat."
They all sound familiar,
but it's more than that.
They're objects
with similar shapes and functions
like someone playing some sort of
word association
without even knowing it.
And if I'm right, Heidi is perfectly safe
to give this speech.
[DISTORTED] I swear I didn't know.
[DISTORTED] I wanna honor Teddy's memory
and share with the world
what he believed in.
Why? What makes you think that?
Because I know what this murder was about.
We just want to go over the security plan
before heading over
so you know what to expect.
Of course. And again, I appreciate it.
- Please have a seat.
- Okay.
We read your added statement at the end.
How Teddy dedicated his life
to exploration
and how not even death should be able
to stop his mission.

- It was beautiful.
Thanks.
I mean, you can really
feel how important
it is to you to continue Teddy's legacy.
- It is.
- Yep.
Important enough
that you killed him to protect it.
As soon as you left to come here, we
executed a search warrant at your home.
We found a different speech
on Teddy's computer
than the one you were about to read,
the speech he'd
actually decided to give.
Teddy was going to tell the world
that he'd recently been diagnosed
with brain cancer,
most likely from radiation
he was exposed to in space.
Obviously, he couldn't be sure
if that was the cause,
but regardless, he felt a responsibility
to reverse his position publicly,
put a freeze on private development
and stop sending people into space
without greater safety measures.
Yeah, the clues were all there. I just
didn't know what they meant at first.
About a month ago, Teddy started holding
a pen in his hand all the time.
Now, people who develop
a tremor sometimes do that
to help stop the hand from shaking.
And all those wrong words in his speech?
That's a symptom of anomic aphasia,
an erosion of his language skills.
It took us a minute to understand
why you chose to kill him
the way you did
and how you got the VX nerve agent.
Then those two questions
answered each other.
